Elsea: Inside Cerri Cantieri Navali’s 30-knot superyacht

If she were a car, Elsea would be the love child of a Porsche 911 Carrera and a Bentley Mulsanne — streamlined in appearance and regal in her dimensions and depth of luxury. From water misters on the upper deck and a refrigerator for cooling sunscreen, to heated marble floors and soft silk and wool carpets, Elsea is 50 metres of unabashed hedonism. And the team behind her would not have it any other way.

Cerri Cantieri Navali was founded in 1997 by entrepreneur Carlo Cerri of Milan, and the boutique yard has built its reputation on semi-custom yachts that combine sleek looks, large exterior spaces and speed. In 2011, CCN became part of the Gavio Group, which now encompasses Baglietto and Bertram .

The all-aluminum Elsea is the first of the Fuoriserie line, which translates as “off series”, or bespoke. It is a new venture for the yard, which is located within sight of the marble hills above Carrara, but one that is likely to continue.

“Our capability at the moment is to deliver three, four boats a year in the range between 30 and 50 meters in length,” CCN’s CEO, Diego Deprati, says. “Now our focus is to follow strictly the wishes of clients who are more and more trying to match their own personality with their lifestyle at sea; a very small production and very high quality products.”

Elsea builds upon the yard’s history but takes it further. Naval architecture and styling is by Studio Bacigalupo with input from Giorgio Vafiadis , the firm that created the interior design. The yacht’s fluid lines are a bit of visual trickery: Elsea is a big yacht, just shy of 500 gross tonnes, but making it look like a lean, mean machine was not the only task.

“The owner wanted speed, open space and luxurious materials,” says Alessandro Balzi, the yard’s project manager. “The weight is a very big element. He wanted a lot of onyx and marble inside, decorative elements, so we had to counterbalance with a lot of weight saving measures.” Herein lay the main challenge for the yard, to achieve the contractual speed of 28 knots. CNN hit the target: Elsea exceeded 30 knots lightship in sea trials.

Cruising comfortably at 23 knots with engines at 80 per cent, Elsea handles like a giant Jet Ski, thanks to triple jets, triple 2000 series MTUs and an optional joystick. “It is fast and it’s great fun,” the captain says. “This is my first jet craft. Now I can see the merit; it is very responsive and very manoeuvrable,” he says. “It is also an extremely comfortable ride. We have not been in very big seas yet, but when we left the Monaco Yacht Show , we must have had two to three foot chop, and it all just disappears in front of us.”

Lacking no gizmo, Elsea has an auto-positioning feature, which works in conjunction with the bow thruster and two gyrostabilisers. “It is not an actual dynamic positioning system, but it is very similar to it,” the captain says. Several modes (sea, harbour, auto and manual) allow the captain to manoeuvre the boat with the joystick or hold a specific heading, and proves handy for holding position at a bridge or harbour entrance.

Where most open-style yachts have a flybridge, Elsea has in effect an extra deck, with commanding headroom. In addition to the bridge and a movie theatre, it combines open air and private enclosed spaces. “The wonderful thing about that aft deck is that it’s extremely private, even when you are in port, because the bulwarks are quite high and the sunpad at the back is raised. Even the boats next door can’t see into the enclosed space. So you can relax there without the prying eyes of the world,” the captain says.

From cushy sunpads aft, guests can cool off in a 3,600 litre superyacht spa pool  that is fed by a waterfall. Forward is an open-air saloon under a skylight in photochromatic glass. “Now it is fading the light for better comfort but it can be transparent,” Balzi says as we tour Elsea on a sunny day. “There is a curtain of water misters to cool the area and it can also be refreshed with a fan coil.”

Here there are also two bars and two of the 26 television screens on board. A DJ station and karaoke machine are part of the entertainment system designed by Videoworks. Special jacks in all external areas allow the party to move. “The exact amount of wattage, I am not sure, but it is an incredible amount,” the captain says. “The music and the audiovisual set-up, it is absolutely top of the line.”

When alone at anchor in a pristine bay, or among friends, the 44.5 square metre lounge on the bow is another inviting spot. “Sun awnings give it a nice atmosphere. They are removable manually. The poles are in carbon painted white from Multiplex,” Balzi says.

The sails protect a banquette, large sunpads and tables from direct sunlight. They are rated up to 40 knots of wind, so they are useful even when the yacht is in motion. The awning over the teak and onyx dining table on the main deck aft has been left up when Elsea is cruising. “I have served meals with the glasses on here and they’ve been fine,” the head stewardess says.

Access to and from shore as well as around the yacht has been well planned. “The client wanted guests and himself to have a complete walkaround of the upper deck,” Balzi says.

Inside on this level, opulence was the watchword. “From the first meetings the owner asked for a very luxurious ambiance,” says Stefano Inglese Vafiadis, who worked with his father Giorgio on the project. “That’s why we designed a décor very rich in details and very pleasant thanks to the combination of many materials that, besides showing the ability of our fine craftsmen, creates a unique style and identity unifying the richness of the interiors. The entire construction was managed and supervised by Imperial Yachts . They have an extremely efficient construction management system and excellent supervisors.”

The upper saloon/movie theatre is organized around a semi-circular couch that faces an 88-inch curved screen. The soft ceiling material follows a circular pattern and is pierced with tiny light inserts. “The idea behind the upper deck lounge ceiling was to recreate the beauty of a spectacular en-plein-air summer sky full of stars, something that recalls the primitive charm of being under the light of thousands of stars,” Vafiadis says.

Constants throughout the interior are shimmering fabrics from the likes of Sahco, Dedar and Hermès in light hues, leather from Foglizzo, Lalique crystal accents, Cantalupi and Lalique lighting and furniture by Visionnaire, Fendi, Lalique and Arreda Italia, but each area has a slightly different feel.

“On a yacht we have four main areas: saloon and public areas, owner, guest and crew. So we decided to use different woods and colours in each,” Vafiadis says. “In the saloon and common spaces we used the dark palm wood and white onyx to create a dramatic contrast between the coldness of the dark wood and the warmness of the marble. We used this effect also with the lights, using the contrast between the Lalique crystal chandeliers, with cold light and then the warmness of the spotlights.”

An important guiding principle in Elsea ’s design is privacy. Hence the full-beam owner's suite is off limits to photography. It’s a superb light-filled space with details including a heated mirror to avoid condensation, heated shower seats and a vanity with motion-sensitive light. A Swarovski panel shimmers as if lit by sunlight.

“We used a very warm plane wood with white onyx and mother of pearl in the bathrooms, creating a very elegant, fine and cozy environment,” Vafiadis says.

A rare blue onyx in two of the guest bathrooms on the lower deck provides the illusion of showering in the clouds. Delicate mother of pearl decorates cabinets in all en suites, aglow with subtle lights, and basins in backlit onyx.

The crew accommodation on Elsea is situated aft, separating the five lower guest cabins from the vast engine room and the tender garage . Access to the crew area from the main deck is via a large pantry, which rivals in size some yacht galleys. “For a sports boat it’s amazing,” says the head stewardess, who has worked on large displacement yachts. The crew space accommodates nine in six cabins, a good crew mess, a galley and a laundry with professional Miele machines.

Compensating for the very full interior pushed the yard to find weight solutions that don’t distract from the luxurious finishes. The stone, wherever possible, is thinly cut and backed by lightweight and insulating materials, but the technique could not be used for backlit elements, Balzi says. “Outdoor furnishings and cabinetry were built in advanced composite materials, including carbon fibre,” he adds.

But even traditional materials hide innovation. High gloss wood panels conceal the technology within. A sophisticated light system by Videoworks based on a Lutron system is controlled by iPads, as are curtains, temperature and sound. A substantial IT backbone supports audio video on-demand, a Crestron management system, extensive communication capabilities and a security system. “Whatever [the client asked for], we tried to make him happy and we worked very hard to make it happen,” Deprati says.

Now that this challenge is behind them, CCN is looking to do more special projects. “We have found the right balance between style, performance and luxury.” The yard has more custom projects under way: a 40 metre explorer built to light ice class in co-operation with brokers Floating Life for an American owner, a 26.8 metre triple jet yacht for Italian fashion innovator Roberto Cavalli and a 31 metre hybrid project designed by Guido de Groot for a European yachtsman. The goal is for each of these projects to expand CCN’s reputation as a custom yard ready to tackle any challenge.

The Need for Speed: Exploring the World’s Fastest Superyachts

In the realm of luxury yachts, where luxury knows no bounds, there exists a class of vessels that stands apart – vessels that blend luxurious living with exhilarating speed. Welcome to our exploration of “The Need for Speed: Exploring the World’s Fastest Superyachts.” In this exhilarating journey across the high seas, we unveil the marvels of modern engineering and design, showcasing a selected group of superyachts that defy convention with their remarkable velocity. From cutting-edge propulsion systems to breathtaking top speeds, join us as we delve into the world of high-performance yachting, where luxury knows how to pick up the pace.

Cutting-Edge Propulsion Technologies in World’s Fastest Superyachts

Conventional diesel engines.

Many superyachts, even the fastest ones, are powered by conventional diesel engines. These engines typically run on marine-grade diesel fuel. They use a system of pistons and crankshafts to convert the energy from diesel combustion into mechanical power, which turns the yacht’s propellers. These engines are reliable and fuel-efficient, providing the necessary power for cruising.

Gas Turbine Engines

Some high-performance yachts, especially military and custom-built vessels, use gas turbine engines. These engines are known for their exceptional power-to-weight ratio. They have the ability to provide a high amount of thrust, which results in impressive speeds. Gas turbine engines are often used in combination with other propulsion systems or in hybrid setups for improved efficiency.

Hybrid Propulsion Systems in Fastest Superyachts

In recent years, there has been a trend towards hybrid propulsion systems. They combine traditional diesel engines with electric motors and batteries. These systems offer greater flexibility, allowing yachts to operate in all-electric mode for silent and emission-free cruising at lower speeds, and then switch to diesel power for high-speed operation. Hybrid systems are more environmentally friendly and can improve fuel efficiency.

Waterjet propulsion is a technology commonly used in high-speed yachts. Waterjets draw water into the yacht and expel it at high velocity through a nozzle at the stern. This system provides excellent maneuverability, shallow draft capabilities, and reduced vibration, making it suitable for fast and agile yachts.

Pod propulsion systems, such as those manufactured by companies like Volvo Penta and Caterpillar, involve the use of pods (outdrive units) that are mounted below the yacht’s hull. These pods can rotate, providing thrust in various directions, resulting in increased maneuverability and efficiency. They are often used in combination with diesel engines for both power and control.

Advanced Hull Designs

Beyond propulsion systems, the hull design of a yacht plays a crucial role in achieving high speeds. Yachts with planing hulls are designed to lift out of the water at higher speeds, reducing hydrodynamic drag and allowing for increased velocity.

Crafting the Perfect Propulsion Strategy for Fastest Superyachts

The selection of a propulsion system for a superyacht is a multifaceted decision that hinges on several critical factors, including the vessel’s size, intended purpose, and the preferences of its owner. Each propulsion method comes with its unique set of advantages and trade-offs, making it crucial to tailor the choice to suit the yacht’s specific requirements. Moreover, it’s not uncommon to witness a synergy of multiple propulsion systems within a single yacht, a testament to the industry’s dedication to optimizing both performance and efficiency. The pursuit of the perfect balance between speed, range, maneuverability, and environmental impact underscores the meticulous craftsmanship and innovation inherent in the design and engineering of these high-speed marvels.

Ten of the world’s biggest superyachts

These ocean beasts are large enough to contain everything a billionaire may want, from concert halls and mediterranean gardens to golf courses and beach clubs.

Azzam, the world’s longest yacht

E very January in Boat International magazine a list of the 101 largest superyachts in the world is published. These are mind-blowing behemoths, but it’s the prosaic detail, rather than the big-ticket opulence, that speaks loudest. On the 156m Dilbar, the fifth largest yacht in the world, there are 1,000 sofa cushions and 1,100km of cabling, about the distance from London to Avignon. It took 4,000 people six million man hours to build Azzam, the longest yacht in the world at more than 180. It’s also worth noting that an owner will typically spend 10 per cent of a yacht’s original price on running costs each year. When you apply that to a $500 million boat, it affords a glimpse of the wealth and passion behind these creations, as well as the miniature economies of boatbuilding they support. To inject the new year with a dose of waterborne glitz, here are the 10 biggest yachts in the world today.

1. Azzam, 180.6m

knots superyacht times

Rather surprisingly, the colossal steel hull of the longest yacht in the world was built for pace — its owner wanted to zip to his private island near Abu Dhabi quick (and very smart). At 31.5 knots, Azzam delivers a top speed similar to a Royal Navy destroyer. That’s thanks to the German yard Lürssen’s powerful combo of gas turbine and diesel engines driving water jets, together churning out 97,000hp. The exterior designer Mario Pedol, of the Milan studio Nauta Design, instilled the appearance of speed in the exterior of this 2013 launch too, with elegant proportions and pared-back lines. The interior decor by the French designer Christophe Leoni remains a closely guarded secret even a decade after delivery but is known to feature a lavish 19th-century Empire style, with a quantity of marquetry rumoured to have cleaned out global supply of mother-of-pearl for a year. The 36 guests (attended by up to 80 crew) can puff it out in the gym, pool or golf-training facility, or socialise in the 29m x 18 main saloon, where open-plan, pillarless architecture and full-height windows necessitated 7cm-thick glass.

2. Eclipse, 162.5m

knots superyacht times

The jewel of Roman Abramovich’s superyacht fleet has made star turns from St Barth’s to New York, but the political climate has turned many jet-set hotspots into hot water for prominent Russian owners. On its 13th birthday in December Eclipse was sitting in the cooler port of Marmaris, Turkey. This nine-decker is a thoroughbred, built at the German yard Blohm+Voss, now part of Lürssen — a name that pops up repeatedly in the Top 10 list, along with Eclipse’s designer, Terence Disdale, whose laid-back interior adheres to his signature “beach house not penthouse” style. Show-off size was never the goal, it just had to be big to accommodate the owner’s wish list of facilities, including space for three helicopters and a huge pool. The latter has a retractable glass roof and a blue granite bottom that rises to become a dancefloor. The beach club (a social space at water level) is served by its own pantry, pizza oven and barbecue. The lower-deck wellness area, meanwhile, comprises a 77 m gym, beauty salon, massage room, sauna and plunge pool, while portholes give an underwater view of the main pool.

3. Dubai, 162m

knots superyacht times

Originally commissioned by Prince Jefri Bolkiah, the Sultan of Brunei’s brother, this yacht was sold to the Dubai government partway through its build and moved from Germany to Turkey for completion in 2006. The vivid interior includes a pool clad in tiles that are imbedded with fibre-optic lights. There’s a cinema, a disco and a water-toy arsenal including a submarine.

4. Blue, 160.6m

knots superyacht times

Terence Disdale aimed to imbue the lines of this 2022 yacht with feminine elegance. Inside, Blue is divided into VIP, entertainment and wellness decks — and, crowning it all, an owner’s deck where the vast master suite is flanked by balconies. Lürssen focused on green tech for the project, incorporating a bespoke diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system and exhaust treatment system and using a cutting-edge membrane to ensure wastewater is disposed of in “drinking-water quality”

5. dilbar, 156m.

knots superyacht times

Many reasonably say that judging a yacht’s size by its length is a little unfair — if you go by gross tonnage (interior volume), Dilbar tops the charts at a staggering 15,917 tonnes for just 24 guests. Packed into that 3,800 sq m space is the largest pool installed on a yacht, at 25m two helipads and a garden planted with Mediterranean greenery that will thrive in the yacht’s regular Côte d’Azur haunts. Lürssen delivered Dilbar to a company held in a trust settled by Uzbek-Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov.

6. Al Said, 155m

knots superyacht times

This 2008 Lürssen giant was designed with a nod to classic cruise liners by the ultra-cool Norwegian superyacht designer Espen Oino for the former Sultan of Oman, Qaboos bin Said al Said. It is believed to accommodate 200 crew and 70 guests, who can choose between entertainment in the concert hall or cinema.

7. A+, 147.2m

A+ Yacht, previously named Topaz

With graceful lines by Tim Heywood and interiors by his fellow Brit Terence Disdale, this mammoth 2012 Lürssen yacht is owned by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan, owner of Manchester City FC. With two pools and a treasure trove of water toys, it’s a hit on the celebrity circuit — Leonardo DiCaprio has reportedly chartered it twice.

8. Prince Abdulaziz, 147m

(Premium Pricing – DOUBLE RATES APPLY)

The Danish shipyard Helsingor Vaerft (better known for building Saddam Hussein’s 82m Basrah Breeze) delivered this yacht to Fahd, then the Saudi king, in 1984. Its interior was designed by David Hicks, the great English decorator known for bold pattern and fantastical colour combinations. Features include a mosque, hospital and cinema, as well as a lobby modelled after the one on the Titanic.

9. Opera, 146.3m

knots superyacht times

The newest entry to the Top 10, the Lürssen-built Opera was designed by Disdale and launched in March last year for a member of Emirati royalty. The interior is top secret, but we know it has two helipads, a 10m pool, a vast spa and a cinema.

10. OK, 146m

knots superyacht times

When the owner of the vessel now known as OK saw the 1982 Japanese-built transport ship Super Servant 3, he decided it was ripe for conversion into a world-roaming explorer yacht. It’s easy to see what inspired him: the whole aft part of the vessel — 100m — can be submerged, leaving just the forward 46m of superstructure above water. This feature, in conjunction with a 40-tonne crane, means the owner’s 46m ketch and a host of water toys can be easily stored and then floated in situ following the boat’s 2022 relaunch at the Turkish yard Karmarine. Revamped accommodation by the young designer Timur Bozca includes cabins for 20 guests, a sundeck spa pool and a botanical garden.

AK Royalty Superyacht

When the horizon is awash with a sea of white yachts, the AK Royalty’s glittering gold exterior more than stands out. Built in 2009 and originally named Plus Too , the 136-foot shallow draft, go-fast Palmer Johnson pairs an onboard party scene with the “blingiest” of paint jobs.

Australian-born Aaron Fidler, former chief engineer-turned-superyacht owner, had clocked enough sea miles to circumnavigate the world three times before he bought AK Royalty in 2022. “I’d long dreamed of owning a fast and sporty Palmer Johnson, so when AK Royalty came to market I knew it was the one,” Fidler tells Robb Report . Painted gold to match his Lamborghini, the yacht home ports in Dubai where demand for day sails in the Arabian Gulf, as well as longer charters to Oman and beyond, is on the rise.

Fidler shipped the yacht from France to Dubai, where he now lives with his wife, Kseniya, and spent a year remodeling it. While the exterior is all about catching attention, the interior focus is on guest entertainment. All the action happens on one deck “so guests aren’t socializing between different levels,” Fidler says. When the main salon’s sliding glass doors are left open, guests have a clear view from the aft deck all the way through to the wheelhouse. It creates a cozy ambiance where dining, dancing, and relaxation take place on one level, separated by smart zoning.

Here are nine cool facts you didn’t know about the world’s only 24-karat gold yacht, available to charter with Burgess.

The Ultimate Bling Boat

AK ROYALTY 00000661

A large part of AK Royalty ’s multi-million dollar refit focused on revamping the exterior from white to gold, inspired by Fidler’s gold Lamborghini. The marine paint is mixed with 24-karat gold dust to ensure it glitters under the sun. The paint technique “took months to perfect,” says Fidler. It’s matched with a pair of gold jet skis and gold sea bobs, not to mention gold furniture, champagne flutes, and bathroom fittings.

Personalized Art

AK ROYALTY 00000661

Most owners tailor their yacht’s interior to their lifestyle and preferences, but there’s more to the wildlife theme aboard AK Royalty than meets the eye. On the wall behind the dining table, a commissioned painting by a prestigious Californian artist features a large white lion with a blue butterfly—the owners’ personal monikers. “The animals symbolize our personalities, I’m the lion and my wife is the butterfly,” says Fidler. There are also three large silver mirror-tiled panther sculptures—one that sits pride of place in the center of the main salon, and two that feature in the master—as panthers are Kseniya’s spirit animal.

Eight Onboard Captains

PLUS TOO 00000661

Led by Chilean-born Captain Pedro Argote, the AK Royalty crew of eight possess professional training that goes beyond your average yachtie. Alongside a qualified lawyer and doctor, there are two diving instructors, free divers, IT engineers, professional fishermen and a pilot. Even more extraordinary is that every member of the crew, from the deckhand to the chief engineer, is a qualified captain. “Should anything happen to me when we’re at sea, any one of my crew can safely bring the boat home,” says Argote.

Every Toy Imaginable

AK ROYALTY 00000661

Fidler outfitted his yacht to catch the attention of Dubai day charterers, and he backed it up with “every toy imaginable.” It includes a dive compressor center, a 32-foot inflatable slide, a fly board, and a 12-person floating trampoline. Seabobs and jetskis bring the speed. Paddle boards and a giant inflatable flamingo bring the post-adrenaline fun. For fitness enthusiasts, the sun deck transforms into an outdoor gym with an onboard personal trainer.

Can Power Other Boats

AK ROYALTY 00000661

Following the 2023 refit, which included an overhaul of the boat’s engineering systems and an upgrade of the generators, AK Royalty can mothership smaller boats, transferring fuel and power. “It’s down to the capability of our crew and the boat’s engineering systems,” says Argote.

The Mother of All Party Boats

AK ROYALTY 00000661

AK Royalty is arguably the mother of all party boats. There is a six-person Jacuzzi on the sun deck, a state-of-the-art AV sound system with iPad controls and DJ decks that sit center of the aft deck “in the heart of the action”. When floor space is required for dancing, the DJ booth moves to the sun deck aft overlooking the crowd below for that outdoor nightclub feel. There’s even a dedicated DJ who flies in on request. “It’s all about creating that party atmosphere,” says Fidler.

Master of Dreams

AK ROYALTY 00000661

The entirely refurbished monochromatic Fendi-themed interior enjoys marble surfaces, Fendi carpets, and gold-tinted mirrors. But it’s in the full-beam master suite where the real magic shines. Mirrored ceilings feature above the king-size bed and private lounge area. A large gold-piece games board invites guests to while away the hours. And the original his-and-hers bathroom in the master suite was ripped out and remodeled into one shared ensuite with a transparent acrylic full-sized bathtub and a steam shower with sauna.

AK ROYALTY 00000661

For Fidler, who likes to travel everywhere at “warp speed,” AK Royalty ’s top speed of 35 knots delivers performance in spades. At that speed, the boat can reach Oman in one to two hours. For fuel efficiency, Argote recommends the yacht’s cruising speed of 13 to 15 knots, which is still 3 to 4 knots faster than most boats in this category. Powerful zero-speed stabilizers keep the boat steady and guests comfortable.

Starlit Movies

AK ROYALTY 00000661

Rather than store tenders and jet skis on the bow, AK Royalty ’s foredeck is a dedicated outdoor movie theatre, with a 16 by 10-foot cinema screen for watching films under the light of the stars. Oversized sun pads comfortably seat all 12 guests, while the projector can be placed behind the screen, meaning when guests get up and move around they don’t cast a shadow and ruin the experience for everyone else.

Ten Of The Fastest Super Yachts On The Water In 2020

knots superyacht times

While most yachts are known for their luxurious features, large size, and even their famous owners, most people don’t equate these mega machines with speed on the water.

Mamimo II

Top Speed: 52 knots

The first yacht on our list is the Mamimo II which clocks in at a blazing 52 knots. This ship was launched in 2007 and is the first model in the Magnum 80 series.

Built by Florida-based Magnum Marine, this yacht’s exterior was designed by automotive design house Pininfarina. Capable of reaching speeds as fast as 52 knots thanks to a powerful pair of MTU diesel engines, this yacht is no slouch on the open water.

Measuring in at 24 meters, this stunning open yacht can accommodate up to six guests in luxury.

Swift

Top Speed: 53 knots

Built by Italian shipbuilder AB Yachts in 2014, Swift is one of the world’s fastest superyachts clocking in with a top speed of 53 knots.  This ship was built as part of the AB116 series designed by Marco Arnaboldi and is the largest of four models.

The Swift has three 2,400hp MTU 16V 2000 M94 diesel engines and a maximum horsepower of 7200hp. Measuring in at 36 meters, you can comfortably cruise the ocean in luxury with guests.

What we know about the Baltimore bridge collapse

Two people were rescued, but officials say six others are presumed dead. they were in a construction crew filling potholes on the bridge. ship traffic has been suspended at the port of baltimore, which handles tens of billions of dollars in cargo each year..

A Coast Guard cutter passes a cargo ship that is stuck under the part of the structure of the Francis Scott Key Bridge after the ship his the bridge Tuesday, March 26, 2024, in Baltimore, Md.

Steve Helber/AP

A cargo ship rammed into Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge early Tuesday, causing the span to collapse and the presumed deaths of six people.

Here's what we know so far about the collapse:

What exactly happened?

The operators of the Dali cargo ship issued a mayday call that the vessel had lost power moments before the crash, but the ship still headed toward the span at “a very, very rapid speed," Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said.

The 985-foot-long vessel struck one of the 1.6-mile bridge’s supports, causing the span to break and fall into the water within seconds.

Six construction workers who were filling potholes on the bridge are presumed dead. Jeffrey Pritzker, executive vice president of Brawner Builders, said they were working in the middle of the span when it came apart.

An inspection of the Dali last June at a port in Chile identified a problem with the ship’s “propulsion and auxiliary machinery,” according to Equasis, a shipping information system. The deficiency involved gauges and thermometers, but the website’s online records didn’t elaborate.

The most recent inspection listed for the Dali was conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard in New York in September. The “standard examination” didn’t identify any deficiencies, according to the Equasis data.

The ship was moving at 8 knots, which is roughly 9 mph (15 kph).

Given the vessel’s massive weight, it struck the bridge support with significant force, said Roberto Leon, a Virginia Tech engineering professor.

“The only way the post can resist it is by bending,” Leon said. “But it cannot absorb anywhere near the energy that this humongous ship is bringing. So it’s going to break.”

Last June, federal inspectors rated the 47-year-old bridge in fair condition. But the structure did not appear to have pier protection to withstand the crash, experts said.

“If a bridge pier without adequate protection is hit by a ship of this size, there is very little that the bridge could do,” Leon said.

How many people are missing?

Two people were rescued, and six others are missing and presumed dead. They all were part of a construction crew that was repairing potholes on the bridge.

Some vehicles on the span seemed to escape with seconds to spare, and police believe the construction workers were the only people who went into the water.

The ship is owned by Singapore-based Grace Ocean Private Ltd., which said all crew members, including the two pilots, were accounted for and there were no reports of injuries.

The ship's warning enabled authorities to limit vehicle traffic on the span. Plus, the accident occurred at 1:30 a.m., long before the busy morning rush. The bridge carried an estimated 30,800 vehicles a day on average in 2019.

What impact could this have?

The collapse will almost surely create a logistical nightmare for months, if not years, in the region, shutting down ship traffic at the Port of Baltimore, a major shipping hub. The accident will also snarl cargo and commuter traffic.

The port is a major East Coast hub for shipping. The bridge spans the Patapsco River, which massive cargo ships use to reach the Chesapeake Bay and then the Atlantic Ocean.

The Dali was headed from Baltimore to Colombo, Sri Lanka, and flying under a Singapore flag, according to data from Marine Traffic.

President Joe Biden said he plans to travel to Baltimore “as quickly as I can” and that he expects the federal government to pick up the entire cost of rebuilding the bridge.

The collapse, however, is not likely to have a big effect on worldwide trade because Baltimore is not a major port for container vessels, but the port’s facilities are more important when it comes to goods such as farm equipment and autos, said Judah Levine, head of research for global freight booking platform Freightos.

Leon, the Virginia Tech professor, said lessons can be learned and improvements can be made following this disaster. For example, bridge cameras and sensors can be used to track when a cargo ship heads off course and communicate with traffic lights and gates at bridge entrances.

“I think that our mission now is to learn from this failure and learn at all levels,” Leon said.

How often does this happen?

From 1960 to 2015, there were 35 major bridge collapses worldwide due to ship or barge collisions, with a total of 342 people killed, according to a 2018 report from the World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure.

Eighteen of those collapses happened in the United States.

Among them was a 2002 incident in which a barge struck the Interstate 40 bridge over the Arkansas River at Webbers Falls, Oklahoma, sending vehicles plunging into the water. Fourteen people died and 11 were injured.

And in 2001, a tugboat and barge struck the Queen Isabella Causeway in Port Isabel, Texas, causing a section of the bridge to tumble 80 feet (24 meters) into the bay below. Eight people were killed.
