Newport-based American Magic to again represent New York Yacht Club at America's Cup

NEW YORK — Earlier this week, the trustees of the New York Yacht Club approved a challenge for the 37th edition of the America’s Cup, sailing’s most prestigious trophy.

“We are extremely excited to continue our quest to regain the America’s Cup with American Magic,” Paul M. Zabetakis, commodore of the New York Yacht Club, said in a prepared statement. “Upon receiving the Protocol for the 37th match, we were pleased to find that it contains elements advocated for by the club last spring.

"In addition, the executive committee recently received a new proposal from Doug DeVos and Hap Fauth, American Magic principals and Club members, that warranted reconsidering our earlier decision to pause our pursuit of AC37."

Previously: New York Yacht Club pulls out of 37th America's Cup

The New York Yacht Club created the America’s Cup and successfully defended it 25 times before losing the Cup to Australia II and the Royal Perth Yacht Club in Newport in 1983. In the years since, the New York Yacht Club has challenged for the trophy four times. The most recent challenge, represented by American Magic, ended prematurely when the team was knocked out of the Prada Cup Challenger Selection Series in Auckland in January of 2021.

Discussions regarding the club’s next challenge started shortly after Emirates Team New Zealand successfully defended the Cup last March. However, due to a lack of clarity regarding the rules, timing and venue for the next Match, the club decided in October to pause its America’s Cup efforts.

36th Cup: Portsmouth-based American Magic eliminated from America's Cup competition

A renewed mutual desire to have American Magic sail on behalf of the club and commit to a campaign for at least two consecutive America’s Cup cycles prompted the club and team to join forces for the 37th America’s Cup.

“While the result in Auckland was not what we had hoped for, skipper Terry Hutchinson and the entire team were tremendous ambassadors for the Club and displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the campaign,” Zabetakis said. “The America’s Cup remains the highest peak in sailing and one of the most difficult challenges in the world of sport. The lessons learned during our previous campaign, combined with American Magic’s physical and intellectual assets and a commitment to multiple cycles, will ensure this challenge a strong chance to claim sailing’s ultimate prize.”

While winning remains the primary goal, it’s not the only focal point of the campaign.

“The club’s involvement in AC37 must advance our foundational initiatives, including the development of America’s youth sailing talent and a commitment to increasing diversity within our sport,” Zabetakis said. “We will also continue to push for changes to the structure of the competition that can make the event more accessible to challengers, fans and corporate partners.”

The team and the club eagerly await the announcement within the next few months of the venue and schedule for the 37th America’s Cup.

“We intend to compete in AC37 and are hungry and highly motivated to be the most innovative team on and off the water,” Fauth said in a prepared statement. “We are proud of how our team rebounded during AC36, but we have unfinished business and are committed to investing in technology, design, innovation, and talent so we are best positioned to bring the America’s Cup home!”

New York Yacht Club to Challenge with American Magic

  • By Dave Reed
  • January 11, 2022

They were in. They were out. And today the New York YC is—almost—back into the America’s Cup . Last week, the club formally announced its intent to return to America’s Cup competition for the 37th edition—wherever it may be—and is once again aligned with the American Magic sailing team. While it is a requirement of the sponsoring club to submit a challenge on behalf of the team, the timing of this “is a team decision,” says a Club spokesperson. It is understood that an official challenge has not yet been submitted, but the deadline is July 31.

“We are extremely excited to continue our quest to regain the America’s Cup with American Magic,” said Commodore Paul M. Zabetakis, who is new on the helm at 44th Street and Harbour Court. “Upon receiving the Protocol for the 37th Match, we were pleased to find that it contains elements advocated for by the Club last spring. In addition, the Executive Committee recently received a new proposal from Doug DeVos and Hap Fauth, American Magic principals and Club members, that warranted reconsidering our earlier decision to pause our pursuit of AC37…The lessons learned during our previous campaign, combined with American Magic’s physical and intellectual assets and a commitment to multiple cycles, will ensure this challenge a strong chance to claim sailing’s ultimate prize.”

RELATED: American Magic’s Defiant Unveiled

The club’s “pause” in October 2021 followed past commodore Christopher Culver’s intent to challenge with the Stars+Stripes syndicate, as well as their uncertainty and concerns about not having a confirmed venue or regatta dates.

Culver’s appointment was not renewed, Zabetakis ascended, and committee members regained control of the club’s Cup future, welcoming American Magic team principles Hap Fauth and Doug DeVos back to the table (although, technically, one could say they never left). According to the announcement, Fauth and DeVos “have committed to a campaign for at least two consecutive America’s Cup cycles.”

American Magic

With American Magic’s assets lying in wait in Auckland, its president of sailing operations and skipper Terry Hutchinson is eager to get the team building, sailing and avoiding further personnel losses—the Alinghi Red Bull Racing challenge has reportedly scooped up key boat builders and shore crew from the American Magic camp.

Patriot , the team’s rebuilt AC75, remains a useful asset, says Hutchinson, and soon enough they’ll be sailing it and developing newer and better control systems. They’ll essentially be able to modify the deck configuration to accommodate the now-allowed self-tacking jib and likely cyclors. “Relative to the last cycle, we’re well along the curve,” Hutchinson said two months ago. “We’re night and day further ahead. We’re talking now about a third-generation AC75, which is awesome, and between Defiant, Patriot and the Mule, that’s roughly 180,000 manhours of boatbuilding and knowledge.”

According to the Protocol, the 37th edition of the America’s Cup will utilize the AC40, which teams will use as development platforms and for pre-Cup scrimmages. They are a big and critical piece in every team’s planning matrix. According to Hutchinson, the delivery of these boats is by order of entry. The New Zealand and British teams are expected to get the first two by late 2022. With Alinghi Red Bull Racing taking the third build slot, American Magic’s AC40 development window is now defined and more limited. However, club and team principals alike, while they await a venue announcement by the end of March, the campaign is well in motion and the intent is clear: to win the darn thing.

New York Yacht Club American Magic took victory in the first Preliminary Regatta of the 37th America's Cup in Vilanova i La Geltru, with helmsman Tom Slingsby leading the way. Despite an anticipated showdown with Emirates Team New Zealand in the Match Race Grand Final, unfavourable wind conditions forced the cancellation of that race, securing the win for NYYC American Magic.

BARCELONA WELCOMES NEW YORK YACHT CLUB AMERICAN MAGIC

Representing the prestigious New York Yacht Club, the NYYC American Magic Team today became the second team to sail at the 37th America’s Cup venue with the successful launch of their new AC40 that was delivered ahead of the arrival of the team’s full complement of boats that is making its way across the Atlantic from their winter training base in Pensacola, Florida.

Chrissy Lamond, the wife of NYYC American Magic’s Chief Operating Officer, Tyson Lamond, officially christened the eighth AC40 in the fleet ‘Magic’ at a dockside ceremony and once some inclement weather cleared from the day before, the sailors took to the water for their first official sail.

Tom Burnham, the Team Coach summed up this significant milestone in the NYYC American Magic campaign saying: “It's great to be here in Barcelona, and it was really nice to get out on the water with our AC40 Boat2 ‘Magic’…and it was really great good day today…There was a decent sea state, it was really big yesterday, and it was definitely still pretty big today and it was different, it's definitely a new challenge and something that we're all going to have to get used to, so it's definitely worth being here to check it out.”

All around the Port Vell in Barcelona, the six teams competing for the 37 th America’s Cup have been busy constructing their bases and readying themselves for what promises to be an intense sailing and training schedule ahead of the first Preliminary Regatta in Vilanova i La Geltrú in September. Boats and teams will be arriving in Barcelona in the coming weeks and spectators will see multiple foiling yachts sailing on the crystal waters just off the busy Barcelona beachfront throughout the summer months.

The NYYC American Magic team are based at the MB92 dockyard on the southern side of the port within easy reach of the La Barcelonetta beachfront, near the promontory of the W-Hotel and directly opposite the World Trade Centre. Two large, dockside hangars have been erected to house the team’s equipment as their base now for the rest of the campaign through to the start of the Challenger Selection Series in August & September 2024.

Tom Burnham praised the huge team effort that has gone into creating the base saying: “The team has been working super hard for the last few months. There’s been a big group of people over here for a while, and they've been working really hard, and the base is really coming together. It's taken a while, it's definitely a lot of work but the nice thing is, now we're here, it's our home for the next 16 months so it's pretty exciting to be here and start operating out of our permanent base for the rest of the way through the Cup. It’s going to be really good.”

And speaking about how the team are settling into their new life in Barcelona, Tom Burnham added: “Everybody is really loving it. It's been great.  It's a good atmosphere, a lot of nice people in Barcelona super friendly, helpful…it's been a good experience so far.”

ny yacht club american magic

The NYYC American Magic team will shortly be fully operational with two AC40s plus their much-modified AC75 ‘Patriot’ that is on its way across the Atlantic Ocean. Tom Burnham was certainly speaking for the team when he commented: “There's going to be a bunch of two-boat sailing with the AC40s through into the Fall when we're leading up into the first World Series event in Villanova i La Geltr ú and then, later in the year, we'll get into sailing ‘Patriot’ in Barcelona which will be really exciting to have a big boat out sailing here. But we’ll be focusing on the two boat AC40 programme for a couple of months to really get into some racing practice and it's the fun part of the programme where we get to do a bunch of race practise with two boats against each other - it's going to be exciting; we're looking forward to it.”

Barcelona is ready to welcome the world at the 37 th America’s Cup and Grant Dalton, CEO of America’s Cup Events commented: “Seeing the NYYC American Magic team on the water and operational is another great milestone for the America’s Cup. All credit to the team, the Port Authority and the event management in getting the bases operational so quickly – they have literally sprung up all around the Port Vell area in double-quick time. We expect all teams to be onsite and fully operational by August and it’s terrific to see another team out on the water training and testing for what promises to be a defining period in all the teams’ training schedules.”

Spectators around the beachfront will be able to see the boats training and testing just metres off the shoreline where the actual racecourse for the 37 th America’s Cup, the Challenger Selection Series plus the Youth and the inaugural PUIG Women’s America’s Cup, will be contested.

Barcelona, Catalonia and Spain welcome the NYYC American Magic team to what is rapidly becoming the centre of the sailing world’s apex event – the America’s Cup.

American Magic seeks to regain its sea legs in America’s Cup preliminary regatta

  • Copy Link copied

The shock of being the first team eliminated from the last America’s Cup has been motivating for the New York Yacht Club’s American Magic.

American Magic was the second challenger to begin training in Barcelona for the 37th America’s Cup; bought two AC40s, the half-size version of the foiling monohulls that will compete next fall for sailing’s biggest prize; and hired helmsman Tom Slingsby, an Australian who is one of the world’s most competitive and decorated sailors.

The American-flagged crew will find out how it compares to two-time defending champion Emirates Team New Zealand and four other challengers when the first of three preliminary regattas is sailed this weekend in Vilanova i La Geltrú, Spain, a short distance down the coast from Barcelona. Practice racing is set for Thursday, and a total of eight fleet races on Friday, Saturday and Sunday will determine the top two teams that will meet in the match-race final.

American Magic’s exit from the 36th America’s Cup in 2021 was hastened when its yacht, Patriot, capsized and nearly sank during a race against Italy’s Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team in the challenger round-robins. The team left New Zealand without having won a race, a deflating result for the New York Yacht Club, which once enjoyed a 132-year winning streak in the competition for the oldest trophy in international sports.

“I think there’s a lot of lessons learned. We worked hard to address those lessons,” Terry Hutchinson, American Magic’s president of sailing operations/skipper, said recently. “Our racing skills were not what they needed to be, so we purchased two AC40s. First and foremost we need to improve our racing skills and we identified that as a weakness. That’s a good step forward.”

American Magic has been two-boat testing since July 1. “The learning curve is completely vertical,” Hutchinson said. “Things that we thought we knew with one boat, we completely dismissed once we got two boats next to each other. That’s a massive win.”

The AC40s are sailed with a crew of just four, including two helmsmen and two trimmers.

The three challengers from 2021 are back: American Magic, INEOS Britannia and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team, which lost to Emirates Team New Zealand in the match. Switzerland’s Alinghi returns after a decade-long absence, this time as Alinghi Red Bull Racing, with the backing of Formula One powerhouse Red Bull Racing. France Orient Express Racing Team will make its debut.

“It has been a very busy couple of months for the team here in Barcelona, but when you stop to think about the milestone of finally getting racing again, it’s a pretty significant occasion.” Emirates Team New Zealand skipper Peter Burling said.

Australian Nathan Outteridge, who has extensive America’s Cup experience as well as Olympic gold and silver medals, makes his competitive debut as a helmsman with the Kiwis.

“Looking across the fleet, I think it has to be the strongest lineup of sailors we have seen in a very long time,” Burling said. “We get such limited time to race one another, making every race critical for development of the sailing team. And the effort every team has been putting in to be ready for this event has shown that.”

Alinghi also has been training in two AC40s.

“Like every time we compete, the goal is to win,” trimmer Bryan Mettraux said. “But for the first regatta of this America’s Cup cycle, the objective is also to gain experience. My personal goal is to be comfortable putting my head out of the boat as much as possible and being good at communicating. This is what will make the difference.”

New York Yacht Club American Magic, the U.S. sailing team challenging for the 36th America’s Cup has announced an initial roster of 17 sailors who will train and compete with the team. The accomplished group includes nine Americans and sailors from four other nations. The 36th America’s Cup will take place in March 2021 off Auckland, New Zealand.

“We’re excited to announce the names on our current sailing team, and continue the process of building a focused and successful program,” said Terry Hutchinson (Annapolis, Md.) Skipper and Executive Director of American Magic. “Every personnel decision we make in this campaign will be with a single goal in mind, and that is to win the America’s Cup in 2021. With the support of our 90-strong collection of world-class designers, boatbuilders and staff, our sailors will be capable of accomplishing that goal.”

The AC75 class, a new type of 75-foot hydro-foiling boat designed specifically for the next edition of the America’s Cup, the world’s oldest international sporting event, is expected to race with a crew of 11 sailors.

“A major consequence of the decision to return the regatta to cutting-edge mono-hulled boats of this size is that America’s Cup racing has been refocused on sailing skills and teamwork,” said Hutchinson, a 14-time world champion and veteran of four Cup campaigns. “It will take a high level of performance from everyone onboard to get these boats around the racecourse.”

American Magic’s team roster includes the combined experience of 31 America’s Cup campaigns, and three team members are previous Cup winners. Eight American Magic sailors are Olympians, with two medals won, and the roster has earned over 60 world championship victories in various classes. American Magic sailors who are also Olympic hopefuls on the US Sailing Team will be given the flexibility to pursue their campaigns for Tokyo 2020 while operating as part of the America’s Cup team.

“This team roster includes a great balance of proven experience and youth, and will help establish the next generation of America’s Cup talent in the United States,” said Hap Fauth (Naples, Fla.), Team Principal and CEO of American Magic.

“Thanks to the efforts of our partners at US Sailing, Oakcliff and other organizations that have supported high-performance sailing, we have capable athletes coming out of Olympic, foiling and development classes here at home. They will help our team win on the water, and also help reengage the American audience with sailing’s pinnacle event.”

American Magic continues to make steady progress on the path towards Auckland, and the team recently opened a dedicated boatbuilding facility in Bristol, R.I. Under the rules governing the 36th America’s Cup, the earliest an AC75 can be launched by any team is March 31, 2019. American Magic is expected to begin sailing their first boat soon after this date, and conduct initial testing on the waters of Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island Sound.
