Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Ultimate Buying Guide

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 buying guide

First released at Baselworld 2019, the Yacht-Master 42 is the newest and largest addition to the Rolex Yacht-Master lineup. Historically, the Yacht Master collection has been the only Rolex sports model available in multiple sizes; however, until the release of the Yacht-Master 42 ref. 226659, 40mm was the largest case size available. Despite the fact that the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 introduced a new and larger 42mm case to the collection, at the time of writing, the model is only offered in a single configuration: a 42mm white gold case fitted with a black dial, black ceramic bezel, and matching black Oysterflex bracelet.

At first glance, the Rolex Yacht Master 42 reference 226659 appears very similar to the 40mm Everose gold model that is also fitted with an Oysterflex bracelet. Both watches feature black dials, matte black ceramic bezels with raised polished numerals, black Oysterflex bracelets, and Rolex’s in-house Caliber 3235 movement. However, while the core design of the Yacht-Master 42 is shared with the other Oysterflex Yacht-Master watches, the larger case paired with its toned-down monochromatic color profile makes it immediately distinct, and these small changes come together to make the Yacht-Master 42 ref. 226659 the perfect poster child for the modern Rolex brand.

The History of the Rolex Yacht Master 42

Compared to many of Rolex’s other lines of watches, the Yacht-Master is a fairly young collection, having only just joined the brand’s catalog in 1992. While Rolex originally built much of its reputation by producing tough-as-nails tool watches, the brand had already started to make its transition towards becoming an all-out luxury manufacturer by the 1980s, and the Yacht-Master was created as an unapologetically luxurious take on the brand’s classic sports watch.

The Rolex Yacht-Master largely follows the same overall design as the Submariner, but leans more towards the opulent and luxurious side of things, rather than being a purpose-built underwater timing tool. Both the Submariner and the Yacht-Master feature rotating timing bezels, but while the Submariner’s bezel rotates unidirectionally and features a luminous dot at the zero-marker, the Yacht-Master’s moves bi-directionally and omits the luminous dot in favor of an insert crafted from either solid gold, platinum, or black ceramic. Similarly, all Rolex Yacht-Master watches feature precious metals somewhere in their construction. Even the most humble models that are largely crafted from stainless steel feature solid platinum bezels, and while the bezel insert on the reference 226659 is built from black ceramic, the watch itself is crafted from solid 18k white gold.

Initially, the Rolex Yacht-Master was exclusively offered in solid yellow gold and with a 40mm case. However, over the years, the collection expanded to include other case sizes and materials including both two-tone and Rolesium (a combination of stainless steel and platinum) references. Both a 29mm Lady Yacht-Master and 35mm Midsize Yacht-Master were previously offered alongside the standard 40mm model, but these two smaller versions were ultimately discontinued in favor of the Midsize Yacht-Master 37.

With that in mind, Baselworld 2019 marked the arrival of both an all-new Yacht-Master size and a new material option for the collection. With the launch of the reference 226659, not only was the Rolex Yacht-Master now available with a 42mm case diameter for the first time in its history but it was also offered with a solid 18k white gold case – something that was previously not an option within the standard Yacht-Master collection. While the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 marked a major step forward for the collection, the new 42mm case size is exclusively available for the ref. 226659, and the watch is only available in one single configuration. Given that the Yacht-Master 42 has only been on the market for a couple of years, many collectors speculate that the solid 18k white gold ref. 226659 is just the first of many 42mm Rolex Yacht-Master watches.

Rolex Yacht Master 42 Defining Elements

For the most part, the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 reference 226659 is a larger, white gold version of the Everose Yacht-Master 40 that is also on an Oysterflex bracelet. However, the ref. 226659 does possess a number of unique traits that make it immediately identifiable and separate it from all other Rolex watches.

42mm White Gold Case

Probably the single most defining feature of the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 reference 226659 is its 42mm case crafted from solid 18k white gold. Not only is this unique because the ref. 226659 is the only 42mm Yacht-Master model, but it also holds the distinction of being the only one that has ever been constructed from white gold. Over the course of the Yacht-Master’s history, it has been created in full 18k yellow gold, Yellow Rolesor (stainless steel and yellow gold), Rolesium (stainless steel and platinum), full 18k Everose gold, and Everose Rolesor (stainless steel and Everose gold). Additionally, there is even a version of the 44mm Yacht-Master II regatta timer that is built from white gold with a platinum bezel, but the reference 226659 is the only iteration of the classic Yacht-Master to be offered in full 18k white gold.

Black Cerachrom Bezel

Just like the 37mm and 40mm Everose gold Rolex Yacht-Master models that are also fitted with Oysterflex bracelets, the Yacht-Master 42 ref. 226659 receives a bidirectional timing bezel with an insert that is crafted from Rolex’s proprietary Cerachrom ceramic material. The black ceramic insert is given a matte-sandblasted texture, with raised graduations that feature a high-polish finish for improved contrast. Despite having both a different case size and being made from different materials, the matte black ceramic insert on the Yacht-Master 42 instantly unites it with the rest of the Oysterflex bracelets Yacht-Master watches in Rolex’s portfolio.

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Oysterflex 42mm White Gold 226659

Oysterflex Bracelet

The Rolex Oysterflex bracelet is quite possibly the most over-engineered rubber strap in the world – however, to call it a “rubber strap” is a bit misleading. Rolex specifically refers to it as a bracelet within its catalog because the elastomer strap features a flexible metal core for optimum durability and longevity. Additionally, the underside of the strap features a comfort pad that elevates the strap slightly off the wrist, better distributing the weight of the watch and promoting airflow and breathability.

One of the more interesting details about how Rolex has chosen to structure its catalog is that the Oysterflex bracelet (seemingly the most sporty and least formal option) is exclusively equipped to the brand’s solid gold models. Whether fitted to a Daytona, Sky-Dweller, or Yacht-Master watch, all of the Oysterflex-equipped models are crafted from solid 18k gold (either yellow, white, or Everose). At the time of writing, the Oysterflex bracelet is only found on the full 18k Everose gold Yachtmaster 40 and Yacht-Master 37 watches, along with the 18k white gold Yacht-Master 42.

Rolex Caliber 3235 Movement

Despite being 2mm larger than the current Yacht-Master 40, the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 is powered by the exact same Caliber 3235 movement. Designed and manufactured entirely in-house by Rolex, the Cal. 3235 represents the brand’s latest generation of date-displaying mechanical movements and can be found in a number of other date-displaying Rolex watches, including all-time classics like the Datejust and the Submariner.

The Caliber 3235 movement is based around Rolex’s new Chronergy escapement, which features a skeletonized structure for improved efficiency. When combined with Rolex’s proprietary blue Parachrom hairspring and a redesigned gear train and mainspring barrel, the Caliber 3235 offers users an increased power reserve of 70 hours, which represents a significant step up from the 48-hour reserve offered by its predecessor. Additionally, despite its improved efficiency, the Rolex Cal. 3235 movement adheres to the same incredibly stringent ‘Superlative Chronometer’ precision standards, which permit a maximum timekeeping deviation of -2/+2 seconds per day.

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Price and Availability

The Rolex Yacht-Master 42 reference 226659 has only been around for a couple of years, so it is still in production and available for purchase from retailers and boutiques. However, as anyone who is familiar with Rolex watches will tell you, finding the model you want brand-new and available for immediate sale is virtually impossible and for many highly popular references, there is no way to buy a brand-new Rolex without spending a significant amount of time on a waiting list. As a result of this lack of availability on a retail level, many buyers turn to the secondary market, where they can add a Rolex Yachtmaster 42 ref. 226659 to their collections without the wait.

How Much is a Rolex Yacht-Master 42?

As of 2021, the retail price for a brand-new Rolex Yacht-Master 42 reference 226659 is $28,900, which represents a $1,600 premium compared to its 40mm Everose gold counterpart. However, due to the fact that the white gold Yacht-Master 42 cannot be purchased at a retail level without being on a waiting list, pre-owned prices exceed their brand-new values and you can expect to pay a premium of several thousand dollars if you wish to skip the line and add one to your collection today.

Where to Buy a Rolex Yacht-Master 42

Since the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 ref. 226659 is still in production, you can technically still buy it brand-new from Rolex retailers and boutiques – just as long as you are willing to wait out the cue. A similar story exists for most of the popular modern Rolex models; however, compared to the steep premiums that many of the brand’s stainless steel sports watches trade hands for on the open market (which can frequently reach values in excess of 100% above their brand-new retail prices), the comparatively reasonable premium of a few thousand dollars to skip the line for a reference 226659 Yachtmaster 42 means that buyers often opt for a pre-owned example, where availability is immediate and guaranteed.

Rolex Yacht-Master 42: A Modern Luxury Sports Watch

Rolex may have originally built much of its legendary reputation by building tough and reliable sport and tool watches, but the brand’s days as a manufacturer of utilitarian timekeeping devices have long since passed. These days, Rolex is an all-out luxury brand and it is arguably the single most famous luxury label in the entire world. The thought of a military branch supplying its troops with Rolex Submariner watches has become almost comical given that countless people all around the globe are unable to buy a Submariner, despite being more than willing to pay full retail price for one. In fact, the Rolex Submariner is so in-demand that most people are willing to pay far more than the brand-new retail price, just to skip the multi-year waiting list and add one to their collections.

Despite Rolex’s transition towards becoming a luxury manufacturer, it has never stopped producing reliable and finely crafted sports watches. However, the nature of its sports watches has certainly evolved to take on a more luxury-oriented approach, just like the brand’s positioning within the greater watch market. Rolex was producing sports watches back in the 1950s and 1960s and although its products were always considered to be premium timepieces, they were hardly regarded as luxury items, let alone status symbols.

These days, Rolex sports watches are some of the most iconic and desirable luxury timepieces in existence, and wearing one has become a universally recognized symbol of success and personal accomplishment. As a result of the implicit connotations that they carry, modern Rolex sports watches need to do more than just be tough and reliable; they also need to offer a bit of flash and match the opulent and exclusive image of Rolex itself.

The Yacht-Master 42 reference 226659 is the perfect poster-child for the modern Rolex brand. Its monochromatic color profile paired with its matte black ceramic bezel and black Oysterflex bracelet makes the watch inherently casual and sporty, and at first glance, you’d be forgiven for thinking that this was a humble stainless steel model. However, at its core, the Yacht-Master 42 ref. 226659 is a $30k solid gold Rolex. Wearing a Rolex watch has become a universally recognized status symbol, but Rolex is not a brand known for making over-the-top, statement pieces. The white gold Yacht-Master 42 is the perfect statement piece for those that do not want to make a statement, and that is precisely why the reference 226659 is the perfect poster-child for the modern Rolex brand.

Could The Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Yellow Gold 226658 Be the Best of the Collection?

The luxurious high-end nautical spirit of the 42mm yacht-master shines through in solid yellow gold and sleek black matte touches..

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Yellow Gold 226658

Any Rolex fan worth his or her salt knows that the Submariner is the champion of the dive watch category , a lifelong companion for underwater adventures and your go-to model if you want to hint at a sporty, active lifestyle. However, what if you are looking for a Rolex that can handle more than a splash but hint at the luxury sailing yacht you’ve got docked in the marina? In this case, the Yacht-Master has got you covered, a tooled-down and dressed-up nautical sports watch that has finally detached itself from the sporty Submariner. Marking a first for the 42mm edition of the Yacht-Master, the latest reference introduced at Watches and Wonders 2022 now comes in a yellow gold case. Combined with the black Oysterflex bracelet and the sleek black ceramic insert on the bezel, the elegant Yacht-Master 42 reference 226658 is more in line with the high-end nautical spirit of the collection.

A “Class A” Yacht

Since Hans Wilsdorf introduced the Oyster in 1926, Rolex and waterproof watches have been synonymous. From the iconic Submariner  to professional deep-sea divers like the  Sea-Dweller , the sea and all things maritime are a natural habitat for Rolex’s robust tool watches. Rolex also enjoys a long-standing relationship with the world of sailing and has partnered with select yacht clubs around the world since the early 1950s. As the sponsor of prestigious regattas like the exciting Rolex Fastnet Race, the Crown even developed a watch, the Yacht-Master II, with a specific regatta countdown function for competitive sailors.

Rolex yacht-Master 16628 Yellow Gold 1992

The introduction of the Yacht-Master in 1992 surprised and then failed to engage Rolex fans. It certainly looked like a Submariner, but it had been tooled down and dressed up in a solid gold case, characteristics that seemed at odds with the professional dive watch vocation of the Submariner. Although the similarities with the Submariner were evident, the water-resistance of the Yacht-Master was reduced from 300 to 100 metres and the luminous dot was removed from the bezel.

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 White Gold 226659

Without the useful regatta countdown function of the Yacht-Master II and its lower water-resistance, the Yacht-Master was positioned as a luxurious nautical watch – and the lifestyle associated with high-end nautical sports – designed to catch the eye of yacht owners, not deckhands or divers.

what’s in a name?

Obviously, the name chosen for the Yacht-Master wasn’t a random choice – nothing is random at Rolex – and clearly speaks to the potential profile of a yacht owner, not a deckhand.

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Yellow Gold 226658

Over the years the Yacht-Master has appeared in a mid-size 35mm men’s version and even a 29mm ladies’ model (1994). Today it exists in three sizes: 42, 40 and 37mm. However, it wasn’t until 1999 that the Yacht-Master really got the wind in its sails with a more contemporary monochrome colour scheme provided by a steel case and platinum Rolesium bezel (ref. 16622) and Oyster bracelet. Then in 2015, the Everose (ref.116655) introduced two major aesthetic updates: the bezel featuring a black ceramic insert and an unexpected black rubber Oysterflex strap introduced on board the Yacht-Master and now used on the Sky-Dweller and Cosmograph Daytona.

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Yellow Gold 226658

The contemporary black rubber strap and the matte ceramic insert were a winning move and clearly demarcated the Yacht-Master as a separate collection. Overnight, the 2015 Yacht-Master looked radically different from its full-metal counterparts, imparting a sleeker, more stylish and more modern vibe. In 2019, the standard 40mm case size for men was joined by a larger 42mm case in white gold , a diameter that differentiated it one step more from the 41mm Submariner Date. The handsome black-tie combination of white gold and matte black Yacht-Master worked well but we think that the latest mix of yellow gold and matte black details works even better.

The reason is simple: white gold can be confused with stainless steel and although the crisp contrast of the white and black is handsome, the yellow gold case broadcasts ‘luxury nautical watch’ with even more conviction.

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Yellow Gold 226658

Yellow gold case

Sharing the same specifications as the white gold model, the latest ref. 226658 differs in just one aspect: its solid 18k yellow gold case. Crafted from a solid block of 18k gold, the middle case is polished and the overall impression is one of elegance. Despite being the largest Yacht-Master, its tapered lugs and relatively slim height mean the watch sits broad and flat on the wrist and works well on smaller wrists (photographed here on Brice’s 16.5mm wrist).

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Yellow Gold 226658

The hallmark bidirectional rotating bezel has a matte black Cerachrom insert with raised and mirror-polished graduations and numerals. Cerachrom, a proprietary material developed and patented by Rolex, is a hard ceramic material that is virtually scratch-proof, corrosion-resistant and impervious to ultraviolet rays meaning it won’t fade over time. The ceramic is sandblasted to give it an attractive grainy texture and a more technical, contemporary finish.

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Yellow Gold 226658

The knurled yellow gold edge means the bezel has a good grip, and the hermetically screwed-down caseback with its fine fluting ensures that only Rolex watchmakers can access the movement. Like all Yacht-Masters, the case is endowed with a Triplock winding crown and the dial protected by a sapphire crystal with a Cyclops lens at 3 o’clock to consult the date.

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Yellow Gold 226658

The black lacquered dial, which reinforces the slick aesthetics of this Rolex Yacht-Master 42, features applied yellow gold hour markers (triangular, round and rectangular) that are treated with Rolex’s own luminescent material known as Chromalight that emits a long-lasting blue glow in the dark. The hallmark Mercedes hour hand, the minute and the central seconds hand with its round counterweight are also crafted in gold with the same luminescent treatment as the hour markers.

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Yellow Gold 226658

Calibre 3235

First introduced in 2015 to replace the long-serving calibre 3135, calibre 3235 is now Rolex’s flagship date-function movement and is protected by no fewer than 14 patents. The most significant innovation is the new Chronergy escapement. Made from anti-magnetic nickel-phosphorous, about half of the robust 70-hour power reserve can be attributed to the newly designed escapement. A Parachrom hairspring fitted on Paraflex shock absorbers, also insensitive to magnetic fields and temperature variations, offers ten times more precision than a traditional hairspring in case of shocks. Calibre 3235 was the first movement to receive Rolex’s own certification as a Superlative Chronometer with a tolerance of just -2/+2 seconds a day (more stringent than COSC).

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Yellow Gold 226658

ThE Great Oysterflex Bracelet

The matte black elastomer strap that has become a distinctive feature of the Yacht-Master replicates the robustness and reliability of a metal bracelet with its hidden infrastructure of flexible and curved metal blades. It is, in our opinion, one of the most comfortable straps on the market today. The Oysterlock folding clasp in 18k yellow gold is fitted with a Glidelock extension system allowing for adjustments of 15mm without tools.

Some identities take longer to forge than others and Rolex is not exactly known for overnight makeovers. After thirty years, the Yacht-Master has finally consolidated its identity and is practically impossible to confuse with a Submariner today. Without a doubt, the black bezel and Oysterflex models create a slicker, smoother and more sophisticated character than the opulent two-tone Oystersteel and Everose gold . And although many will be attracted to the understated black-tie appeal of the white gold ref. 226659, the more dynamic combination of yellow gold and black captures the luxurious nautical spirit of the Yacht-Master perfectly. While I doubt that Rolex is a slave to fashion trends, the rise of yellow gold is undeniable along with the return of the hedonistic fashion and style that ruled the 1980s and 1990s. However, combined with the sandblasted black matte ceramic and the rubber bracelet, the potential for bling is contained and this 226658 conveys a sexy, contemporary attitude.

Availability & Price

The Rolex Yacht-Master 42 reference 226658 in yellow gold retails for  EUR 26,700 . Availability is, as always with the brand, limited. More information at Rolex.com .

Thanks for the great in depth article. When it was first released in 2015 I loved it and if I had the funds back then would have bought it. There was a wait list of about 6-12 months which I put my name down and was offered one but still just couldn’t justify the expenditure. It’s still my favourite sports Rolex. I agree with you that if your spending that much the yellow or rose gold version is my preference and prefer 40mm size but to be fair haven’t tried on the 42mm. However It wouldn’t be my daily wear as it’s a bit bold but not as bling as other gold Rolexes due to the matt bezel and rubber strap. Now if only they released a steel version 🙂 but that would be more impossible to get on a wait list. Regards alternatives as all gold Yatchmasters are not obtainable from your AD. These are available and arguably much better made. First the Blancpain Bathyscape at 43mm a tad larger and thicker though. Then there is the superb Glashautte Original SeaQ. I have admired them for sometime but hesitated between the 39.5mm with the not great 40 hr power reserve and a solid back or the larger 43.2 mm which has an exhibition case back and 100 hour power reserve but quite thick. One day a preowned steel 39.5 mm SeaQ became available for a great savings. It took me 5 mins to pull the trigger. I currently own and have owned a lot of sports dive/skin watches and this is my favourite daily wear for som time now. The 39.5 x 12.15 thickness is perfect on my wrist and the finish is just superb. The power reserve is no big deal as it’s worn continuously. PS they have just released a 39.5 mm rose gold version with an exhibition case back. Glashutte also offer excellent strap options.

When I bought a Yacht-Master (40 mm, with a platinum white dial) around 2009, I was still trying out the Daytona and Submariner with a green bezel. Finally, the choice fell on a watch with platinum. Those were beautiful times!

I really like the look, but I can’t mentally justify the increased price over other rolex watches, like the 126622 at $12k. Over $14k more for a more expensive gold case, but cheaper rubber strap and ceramic bezel?

I think people should stop reviewing Rolex watches since these are available for public anymore.

My grandpa would like it.

Yacht-Master 42

The Yacht-Master’s new Oysterflex bracelet, developed and patented by Rolex, offers a sporty alternative to metal bracelets. The bracelet attaches to the watch case and the Oysterlock safety clasp by a flexible titanium and nickel alloy metal blade. The blade is overmoulded with high-performance black elastomer which is particularly resistant to environmental effects, very durable and perfectly inert for the wearer of the watch. For enhanced comfort, the inside of the Oysterflex bracelet is equipped with a patented longitudinal cushion system that stabilizes the watch on the wrist and fitted with an 18 kt yellow gold Oysterlock safety clasp. It also features the Rolex Glidelock extension system, designed and patented by the brand. This inventive toothed mechanism, integrated beneath the clasp, allows fine adjustment of the bracelet length by some 15 mm in increments of approximately 2.5 mm, without the use of tools.

By operating its own exclusive foundry, Rolex has the unrivalled ability to cast the highest quality 18 kt gold alloys. According to the proportion of silver, copper, platinum or palladium added, different types of 18 kt gold are obtained: yellow, pink or white. They are made with only the purest metals and meticulously inspected in an in-house laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment, before the gold is formed and shaped with the same painstaking attention to quality. Rolex's commitment to excellence begins at the source.

The Yacht-Master’s bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel is made entirely from precious metals or fitted with a Cerachrom insert in high-tech ceramic. The raised polished numerals and graduations stand out clearly against a matt, sand-blasted background. This functional bezel – which allows the wearer to calculate, for example, the sailing time between two buoys – is also a key component in the model’s distinctive visual identity.

All Rolex watches are assembled by hand with the utmost care to ensure exceptional quality. Such high standards naturally restrict Rolex production capacity and, at times, the demand for Rolex watches outpaces this capacity.

Therefore, the availability of certain models may be limited. New Rolex watches are exclusively sold by Official Rolex Jewelers, who receive regular deliveries and independently manage the allocation and sales of watches to customers.

Tourneau I Bucherer is proud to be part of the worldwide network of Official Rolex Jewelers and can provide information on the availability of Rolex watches.

Light and robust, the new Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42 in RLX titanium is the ally of those seeking freedom of movement. Especially suited to the demands and pressures of competitive sailing, it puts watchmaking excellence at the service of sporting performance.

The Yacht-Master 42 is the second watch in RLX titanium released by Rolex after the Oyster Per-petual Deepsea Challenge, confirming that light-ness is a quality to be taken seriously.

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Ultimate Guide

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Ultimate Guide

Rolex has always stood out as a symbol of unmatched craftsmanship and timeless elegance. Introduced in 1992, the Rolex Yacht-Master is no exception to this legacy. It epitomizes the brand’s ability to seamlessly blend luxury with utility. The timepiece, originally conceived to be the mariner’s companion, has since then sailed its way into the collections of both professional sailors and horological enthusiasts alike. Its conception was a tribute to the maritime world, marrying aesthetics and function in a manner only Rolex could achieve. Over the years, the Yacht-Master has seen numerous evolutions in design and size, reinforcing its status as one of Rolex’s most versatile collections.

From the dainty 29mm to the more robust 40mm, there was always a Yacht-Master to fit every wrist and taste. And then, at Baselworld 2019, Rolex made waves in the horological world by unveiling the most majestic of them all – the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 . This new addition signaled Rolex’s intent to push boundaries while staying true to the collection’s seafaring roots.

<> Rolex Yacht-Master 42 History

When Rolex first unveiled the Yacht-Master back in 1992, it wasn’t just a new timepiece. It was a statement—a nod to the maritime world, embodying a perfect blend of aesthetics and function. This luxury sports watch, with its distinguishing features and design, was tailored to echo the spirit of the sea, making it an instant favorite among yachting enthusiasts and the crème de la crème of the maritime community.

Over the years, as the watch landscape ebbed and flowed with trends and technological advancements, the Yacht-Master effortlessly sailed through, adapting and evolving. The collection, which began with a singular vision, expanded its horizons to include various case sizes, ensuring there was a Yacht-Master for every wrist. These adaptations were not merely cosmetic; they were a reflection of Rolex’s commitment to cater to diverse preferences while maintaining the core essence of the Yacht-Master line.

2019 became a landmark year for the collection. At Baselworld, the world bore witness to the grandeur of the Yacht-Master 42, the largest in its series. Launched in 18k white gold, it resonated with luxury, precision, and a renewed sense of purpose. This was not just an extension of the Yacht-Master line; it was a reinvention, showcasing Rolex’s prowess in pushing boundaries while staying rooted in tradition.

Yet, Rolex’s voyage with the Yacht-Master 42 didn’t stop at its monumental launch. The subsequent years saw a burst of creativity and innovation from the brand. In 2022, they presented two spectacular variations: a radiant yellow gold edition and a unique white gold version adorned with a Falcon’s eye dial. And as if to prove that they were still at the pinnacle of horological innovation, 2023 marked the arrival of the RLX titanium edition, once again solidifying the Yacht-Master’s iconic status in the watchmaking realm.

Delving deeper into the anatomy of the Yacht-Master 42 reveals the meticulous craftsmanship and unparalleled innovation Rolex is renowned for:

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Models White Gold, Yellow Gold, and RLX Titanium

Case Variations

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 models (as of 2023):

Ref 226659 – 18k white gold with Oysterflex Strap

Ref 226658 – 18k yellow gold with Oysterflex Strap

Ref 226559 – 18k white gold with Falcon’s Eye dial and Oysterflex Strap

Ref 226627 – RLX titanium

Crown – Triplock case

Water resistance – 100 meters / 330 feet

The iconic 42mm case of the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 represents an intersection of tradition and innovation, each variant bringing with it a unique story and a distinct identity.

Introduced in 2019, the 18k White Gold ref 226659 was a trailblazing model that set the tone for the Yacht-Master 42’s subsequent evolutions. The decision to cast this magnificent watch in white gold wasn’t just about aesthetics, but also about creating a lasting legacy. White gold, known for its muted elegance and timeless appeal, turned this inaugural model into an immediate classic, suitable for both the adventurous mariner and the discerning horologist.

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 18k White Gold

The subsequent year witnessed another milestone with the release of the 18k Yellow Gold ref 226658. Yellow gold has always been associated with opulence, and with this release, Rolex infused the Yacht-Master 42 with a touch of regal luxury. The gleaming hue of yellow gold underlines the watch’s stature, making it a centerpiece in any collection and a conversation starter in any gathering.

Yet, Rolex’s penchant for marrying beauty with uniqueness found its pinnacle in the 18k White Gold ref 226559 Falcon released in 2022. The Falcon’s eye dial, reminiscent of the majestic bird’s keen gaze, features an organic texture with blue-green gradients, adding a layer of depth and intrigue to the watch. This model isn’t just a timepiece; it’s an artwork, reflecting Rolex’s commitment to pushing the envelope in watch design.

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 in Yellow Gold and RLX Titanium

And then there was the RLX Titanium edition of 2023. Titanium, known for its unmatched strength-to-weight ratio, signaled a new direction for the Yacht-Master 42. RLX titanium is a grade 5 titanium material especially selected by Rolex. With its high mechanical strength and corrosion resistance, it was used in the inaugural titanium watch of Rolex – the Deepsea Challenge. By embracing this material, Rolex not only made a statement about the watch’s resilience but also its modernity.

Together, these variations of the 42mm case symbolize Rolex’s journey with the Yacht-Master 42 — a journey of exploration, innovation, and timeless elegance. <> <>

Black Matte Cerachrom Bezel

At the forefront of Rolex’s Yacht-Master 42 design lies the Black Matte Cerachrom Bezel, a testament to the brand’s commitment to both beauty and brawn. While at first glance, it might seem like a mere aesthetic feature, its true genius lies beneath. Crafted from Rolex’s proprietary Cerachrom ceramic material, this bezel boasts resistance to scratches and fading, ensuring it remains untarnished by the tests of time and nature. This resilience makes it particularly suitable for those navigating the challenging marine environment, where watches are frequently subjected to abrasive elements.

Yet, its robust nature doesn’t deter from its elegance. The bezel features raised and polished markers that contrast brilliantly against the matte background. These markers are not just about style; they are practical design elements that ensure clarity. Whether you’re steering through a storm or basking in bright sunlight, the Yacht-Master 42’s bezel promises readability, an essential trait for professional yachtsmen and enthusiasts alike. <> <>

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Black Dial and Falcon's Eye Dial

Matte Black and Falcon’s Eye Dial

Crystal – Flat sapphire with Cyclops lens

Luminescence – Chromalight

Functions – Time with running seconds, instantaneous date

Diving deeper into the face of the Yacht-Master 42 reveals its classic black dial, a canvas on which Rolex’s craftsmanship shines brightly. This choice of color not only provides a sleek and timeless backdrop but also enhances the legibility of the timepiece. At sea, where lighting conditions can change rapidly, clarity becomes paramount.

But Rolex takes it a step further. Nestled within this dark expanse are Chromalight hour markers, a luminescent material known for its long-lasting glow. These markers are enveloped in exquisite gold surrounds, adding a touch of opulence to the dial. The combination ensures that regardless of the environment—be it the darkness of a moonless night or the blinding glare of midday sun—the Yacht-Master 42’s dial remains impeccably visible. This blend of aesthetics and functionality captures Rolex’s philosophy perfectly: crafting timepieces that look stunning and perform flawlessly. <> <>

Oysterflex Bracelet (on gold models)

Clasp – Oysterlock safety clasp in gold, with Glidelock extension system

Rolex’s innovative Oysterflex bracelet is a testament to the brand’s commitment to harmonizing robustness with comfort. It may appear like a simple rubber strap at a cursory glance, but delve deeper and you’ll discover a meticulously engineered marvel. At its core lies a titanium nickel alloy blade that gives it stability, overmoulded with high-performance black Elastomer, a flexible material that conforms around the wrist.

What truly sets the Oysterflex bracelet apart is its patented cushion system on the underside. These cushions not only act as a buffer between the wrist and the watch, ensuring optimal comfort, but they also facilitate air circulation, mitigating sweat and potential wear. This sophisticated design ensures the watch sits ergonomically on the wrist, providing wearers with the luxury of both a sporty appearance and a supple embrace.

Coupled with the gold Oysterlock clasp, the Oysterflex bracelet is more than just a strap. It embodies the Yacht-Master 42’s nautical spirit — strong, reliable, and yet exceedingly elegant. Whether you’re at a formal event or navigating the high seas, the Oysterflex guarantees both a secure fit and a statement of sophistication. <> <>

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 in RLX Titanium

Titanium Bracelet (on RLX Titanium model)

Clasp – Oysterlock safety clasp in titanium, with Easylink extension

With the RLX Titanium edition of the Yacht-Master 42, Rolex embarked on a new journey, one that explored the unparalleled properties of titanium. This metal, renowned in various industries for its impressive strength-to-weight ratio, presented Rolex with an opportunity to craft a bracelet that was both robust and surprisingly light on the wrist.

Titanium’s inherent qualities extend beyond just its strength and lightness. As a hypoallergenic metal, it ensures minimal reactivity with the skin, making the bracelet particularly well-suited for those with sensitive skin or for wearers who are frequently in aquatic or challenging environments. The subtle matte finish of the titanium bracelet further complements the Yacht-Master 42’s aesthetics, offering a modern, industrial appeal while maintaining the watch’s luxury quotient. <> <>

Rolex Caliber 3235

Rolex Caliber 3235 Movement

Power Reserve –  70 hours

Precision – -2 / +2 seconds per day, after casing

Beneath the exterior elegance of the Yacht-Master 42 lies an intricate world of horological mastery: the Caliber 3235 movement. This movement, representing the zenith of Rolex’s watchmaking expertise, stands as an embodiment of precision, power, and reliability.

The Caliber 3235 is equipped with a Chronergy escapement, a significant innovation developed and patented by Rolex. Made of nickel-phosphorus, this escapement offers not only heightened efficiency but also resistance to magnetic interference. This ensures that the Yacht-Master 42 consistently delivers precise timekeeping, even in environments with potential magnetic disturbances.

Adding to its impressive credentials is the movement’s high-capacity mainspring barrel, providing a power reserve of approximately 70 hours. This means wearers can rest easy, knowing their timepiece will continue its precise ticking even when left unworn for an extended period. Furthermore, the inclusion of Rolex’s patented blue Parachrom hairspring reinforces the movement’s resilience, offering up to ten times more precision in case of shocks compared to traditional hairsprings.

At its core, the Caliber 3235 movement is a testament to Rolex’s relentless pursuit of perfection. It boasts a Superlative Chronometer certification, underscoring its impeccable precision. The design and layout of this movement also ensure ease of servicing, emphasizing longevity and sustained performance over the years. This masterpiece of engineering encapsulates the brand’s unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of timekeeping, crafting watches that not only mark time but stand as shining examples of mechanical excellence.

The Oysterflex Bracelet

18 kt yellow gold

By operating its own exclusive foundry, Rolex has the unrivalled ability to cast the highest quality 18 kt gold alloys. According to the proportion of silver, copper, platinum or palladium added, different types of 18 kt gold are obtained: yellow, pink or white. They are made with only the purest metals and meticulously inspected in an in-house laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment, before the gold is formed and shaped with the same painstaking attention to quality. Rolex's commitment to excellence begins at the source.

18 kt Yellow Gold Bar

Bidirectional Rotatable Bezel

The Yacht-Master’s bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel is made entirely from precious metals or fitted with a Cerachrom insert in high-tech ceramic. The raised polished numerals and graduations stand out clearly against a matt, sand-blasted background. This functional bezel – which allows the wearer to calculate, for example, the sailing time between two buoys – is also a key component in the model’s distinctive visual identity.

The Rolex Crown

All Rolex watches are assembled by hand with the utmost care to ensure exceptional quality. Such high standards naturally restrict Rolex production capacity and, at times, the demand for Rolex watches outpaces this capacity.

Therefore, the availability of certain models may be limited. New Rolex watches are exclusively sold by Official Rolex Jewelers, who receive regular deliveries and independently manage the allocation and sales of watches to customers.

Fink's Jewelers is proud to be part of the worldwide network of Official Rolex Jewelers and can provide information on the availability of Rolex watches.

Light and robust, the new Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42 in RLX titanium is the ally of those seeking freedom of movement. Especially suited to the demands and pressures of competitive sailing, it puts watchmaking excellence at the service of sporting performance. The Yacht-Master 42 is the second watch in RLX titanium released by Rolex after the Oyster Perpetual Deepsea Challenge, confirming that lightness is a quality to be taken seriously.

New Release: 2024 Rolex Deepsea Is A 322g Dive Watch In Yellow Gold

rolex yacht master 42 yellow

After exploring the sensible lightness of titanium in dive watches with the Yacht-Master 42 in RLX Titanium , Rolex does the unexpected and presents the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Deepsea 136668LB in 18k yellow gold. It is unexpected for a number of reasons, so let’s dig right in.

rolex yacht master 42 yellow

First, Rolex watches, especially those from recent years, have positively drifted from the showy approach the brand, and the larger watch industry, presented in the ’90s and ’00s, and refocused on inherent functionality and conceptual integrity. Yes, all that happened well within the realms of poseur luxury products, so do take that statement with a pinch of salt — but it was a positive and tasteful development, nevertheless. We started seeing new watches in RLX Titanium, or when in gold, they were fitted with comfy and durable Oysterflex elastomer straps, and we discovered impressive advancements in movement technologies and durability, too. It felt like Rolex was on its track back to its roots, which would be beautifully made, functional, robust tool watches — albeit without removing the thick veneer of luxury it has put on over the last seven decades.

rolex yacht master 42 yellow

The new-for-2024 Rolex Deepsea in yellow is unexpected because it flies in the face of that approach by being a 3,900m (12,800ft), 44mm wide dive watch wrapped in 18k yellow gold, with an absolutely massive 18k yellow gold bracelet attached to it. For those who are yet to wear a solid gold watch on a gold bracelet: These things are shockingly heavy. Ridiculously so. Uselessly so  That’s a utilitarian approach, and there is a more subjective one: Taste. A simple description, I’m sure, would suffice, but looking at the new 136668LB will convince you that this well and truly is what Stallone would have worn in 2004 — but, thankfully, we are in 2024, not 2004, and watch collectors seem to have changed their reference point since then.

rolex yacht master 42 yellow

Meeting Rolex during our presence here at Watches & Wonders Geneva 2024 we learned that the Yacht-Master II — the entire collection — has been discontinued from 2024. It goes without saying that there still is a strong market for large gold watches, and this highly unlikely configuration would be it for Rolex. Yes, the Submariner has been around for over 50 years in gold, but it has always been a lot narrower and thinner than the Deepsea, making it that much more wearable.

rolex yacht master 42 yellow

In other news, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Deepsea is called just that, gone is the Sea-Dweller designation. The inner Ringlock high-performance compression ring system is now crafted from Cerachrom ceramic — it is basically that flange ring that frames the dial and lies under the crystal. As such, it perfectly matches the blue Cerachrom bezel, which is reserved exclusively for gold and two-tone Rolesor watches, it’s never on an Oystersteel piece.

rolex yacht master 42 yellow

The massive Oyster bracelet in 18k yellow gold also relies on ceramic, ceramic inserts to be specific, which isn’t new from Rolex — it debuted in 2015 on the Day-Date — and makes the bracelet that much more supple and yet resistant to stretching. The bracelet is equipped with the Oysterlock safety clasp which, in turn, features a Rolex Glidelock tool-free 20mm extension system crafted from solid 18k gold — probably the coolest, most covetable component of the new Rolex Deepsea in yellow gold.

rolex yacht master 42 yellow

The movement that enjoys the 3,900m (12,800ft) water resistance is The Rolex Caliber 3235 which will be familiar to those with a date-equipped, larger Rolex watch. It runs at 4Hz over the course of its 70-hour power reserve and is equipped with the highly efficient Chronergy escapement, Parachrom hairspring, and Paraflex shock absorbers. The caseback is in RLX Titanium, which is not something one would expect to see paired with 18k yellow gold from Rolex’s own gold foundry.

A bonkers watch front to back, the new Rolex Oyster Perpetual Deepsea 136668LB in 18k yellow gold is priced at CHF 49,900 Swiss francs . You can learn more at the brand’s website.

OYSTER PERPETUAL DAY-DATE 36

rolex yacht master 42 yellow

TIME STAMPED WITH EMOTION

With these versions of the Day-Date 36, Rolex brings an unexpected creative twist to one of its iconic models. By displaying a new emotion each day, the watch brings an element of spontaneity into the wearers’ daily life and allows them to invest the reading of time with their changing mood.

Rolex unveils three new variants of its Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 36, full of joy and energy. Crafted from 18 ct yellow, white or Everose gold, these watches have adopted an original face. Rather than showing the day of the week, the arc-shaped aperture at 12 o’clock displays an inspirational keyword in English – ‘Happy’, ‘Eternity’, ‘Gratitude’, ‘Peace’, ‘Faith’, ‘Love’ and ‘Hope’. The window at 3 o’clock reveals daily one of 31 exclusive emojis in place of the date. Entirely created using champlevé enamelling, the dial is striking for the depth and intensity of its gleaming colours and decoration. The motif is inspired by a jigsaw puzzle. Turquoise blue, red, fuchsia, orange, green and yellow pieces fit together on a single-colour background, each representing one of the key moments in life. The hours are marked by 10 baguette-cut sapphires in six different hues set according to the main colour of the dial, which is turquoise blue on the 18 ct yellow gold and 18 ct white gold versions, and orange on the watch in 18 ct Everose gold. The new versions of the Day-Date 36 are equipped with calibre 3255, a movement at the forefront of watchmaking technology, enabling them to display a special keyword each day of the week and an individual emoji each day of the month, as well as the hours, minutes and seconds. Like all Rolex watches, the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 36 carries the Superlative Chronometer certification, which ensures excellent performance on the wrist.

Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 36 — ©Rolex/Ulysse Fréchelin

EXCLUSIVITY ACCORDING TO ROLEX   At its launch in 1956, the Day-Date was a major innovation: it was the first calendar wristwatch to indicate, in addition to the date, the day of the week spelt out in full in an arc-shaped window at 12 o’clock on the dial – a technical feat at the time. The day of the week is available in a choice of 26 languages. Watches in the Day-Date range are made only of precious metals – 18 ct yellow, white or Everose gold, or 950 platinum. Worn by many of the world’s political figures, directors and visionaries, the Day-Date is instantly recognizable, in particular thanks to its emblematic President bracelet, whose evocative name, together with the eminent figures who have worn it, ensured the Day-Date became known as the ‘presidents’ watch’.

Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 36 — ©Rolex/JVA Studios

THE OYSTER CASE, SYMBOL OF WATERPROOFNESS A paragon of robustness and elegance, the 36 mm Oyster case of the new versions of the Day-Date 36 is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet). The middle case of these versions is crafted from a solid block of 18 ct yellow, white or Everose gold. Its case back, edged with fine fluting, is hermetically screwed down with a special tool that allows only Rolex watchmakers to access the movement. The Twinlock winding crown, fitted with a double waterproofness system, screws down securely against the case. The crystal, which features a Cyclops lens at 3 o’clock, is made of virtually scratchproof sapphire and benefits from an anti-reflective coating. The waterproof Oyster case provides optimal protection for the movement it houses.

PERPETUAL CALIBRE 3255 The new versions of the Day-Date 36 are equipped with calibre 3255, a movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex that was released in 2015 and fitted on this model in 2019. A distillation of technology, this self-winding mechanical movement delivers outstanding performance in terms of precision, power reserve, convenience and reliability. Calibre 3255 incorporates the patented Chronergy escapement, which combines high energy efficiency with great dependability. Made of nickel-phosphorus, this escapement is resistant to strong magnetic fields. The movement is fitted with a blue Parachrom hairspring, manufactured by Rolex in a paramagnetic alloy. The hairspring offers great stability in the face of temperature variations as well as high resistance to shocks. It is equipped with a Rolex overcoil, ensuring the calibre’s regularity in any position. The oscillator is mounted on the Rolex-designed, patented high-performance Paraflex shock absorbers, increasing the movement’s shock resistance. The oscillating weight is now fitted with an optimized ball bearing. Calibre 3255 is equipped with a self-winding system via a Perpetual rotor. Thanks to its barrel architecture and the escapement’s superior efficiency, the power reserve of calibre 3255 extends to approximately 70 hours.

PRESIDENT BRACELET The new variants of the Day-Date 36 are fitted on a President bracelet in 18 ct yellow or white gold for those with a turquoise blue puzzle-motif dial, or in 18 ct Everose gold for the orange puzzle-motif dial. Created specially for the launch of the prestigious Oyster Perpetual Day-Date in 1956, this three-piece link bracelet, made only from 18 ct gold or 950 platinum, is still reserved exclusively for the Day-Date and precious metal versions of the Datejust. The President bracelet is equipped with an elegant concealed folding Crownclasp and includes patented ceramic inserts – designed by Rolex – inside the links to enhance its flexibility on the wrist and its longevity.

SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER CERTIFICATION Like all Rolex watches, the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 36 is covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification redefined by Rolex in 2015. This designation testifies that every watch leaving the brand’s workshops has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria, following the official certification of the movements by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC). The in-house certification tests apply to the fully assembled watch, after casing the movement, guaranteeing superlative performance on the wrist in terms of precision, power reserve, waterproofness and self-winding. The precision of a Rolex Superlative Chronometer is of the order of −2 /+2 seconds per day – the rate deviation tolerated by the brand for a finished watch is significantly smaller than that accepted by COSC for official certification of the movement alone. The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolized by the green seal that comes with every Rolex watch and is coupled with an international five-year guarantee.

All of Rolex’s New Watches From Watches & Wonders 2024

Rolex just announced their novelties at the world's largest watch show in geneva..

Rolex Catalog 2024

Rolex just announced its novelties for 2024, and these releases are confirming our take on Watches & Wonders as a moment of iterative updates of classic watches. The 2024 collection is decidedly nothing like the wild puzzle pieces and emoticons we saw from The Crown last year. The exception here may be the Daytona, which is studded with diamonds and sports what one could call a “Pearl Panda” dial (and, of course, its reverse).  The much anticipated GMT-Master II Coke (known for its red and black bezel) didn’t happen this year, but instead we get a lovely gray and black bezel (as seen on last year’s two-tone GMT-Master II) with a pop of Rolex’s signature green for the GMT hand and the option of an Oyster or a Jubilee bracelet—very classy.

If anyone was complaining last year that Rolex had strayed too far into the circus of color–that The Crown was just having too much fun flitting about—then this year proves that Rolex was always going to return to its quiet place at the center of the horological galaxy. Will this return to normalcy make any of these watches easier to get at retail? We will assume a resounding “hell no” to be the obvious answer. For many, including some of our own staff, these more conservative models will be the ones to own over the long haul, because they’ll remain timeless, versatile, and rugged companions—which, looking back over the past 100 years, is exactly what a Rolex was always meant to be.

Ladies and gentlemen, friends and family, please welcome the Rolex 2024 lineup to the stage.

GMT-Master II in Steel on Gray and Black Ceramic Bezel

rolex yacht master 42 yellow

Two new Oystersteel versions of the Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II—one with an Oyster bracelet, the other with a Jubilee bracelet, both with a 24-hour graduated Cerachrom bezel insert in gray and black ceramic—will delight travelers with a sentimental streak for the understated steel GMTs of last century. As well as an alternative time zone, the green 24-hour hand points to a location that carries emotional significance for the wearer, which we simply call home. (Whether, for die-hard fans, that’ll be the manufacture’s HQ in the Acacias district of the city in which the piece has been unveiled remains to be seen!)

The same green hue is used for the GMT-Master II inscription upon the black lacquer dial, offering a second subtle flash of color on arguably the most elegantly muted iterations yet of a navigation tool watch first unveiled in 1982. But that’s not just any green; it’s Rolex green, so you’re assured a splash of quiety luxury every time you check the time—at home or wherever you may roam.

Rolex Deepsea in Yellow Gold and Cerachrom Bezel

rolex yacht master 42 yellow

It’s the first ever Oyster Perpetual Rolex Deepsea to be presented in 18-karat yellow gold. It’s also the first time the Deepsea has worn a Cerachrom bezel, and this is the first time that Rolex has separated the Deepsea from the Sea-Dweller lineup. That’s a lot of firsts.

That gold’s striking juxtaposition to the rich blue of the lacquer dial and ceramic bezel is not being lost on the crowds mingling in the Geneva Palexpo convention center at the time of writing. But serious dive watch geeks right now are busy marveling at a new technical masterstroke: the compression ring within the Ringlock system in this new piece—the part of the watch’s architecture that equips it to withstand depths of up to 3,900 meters—is now crafted from ceramic.

Technical diving innovation is an ongoing mission for Rolex, and the Deepsea has always been renown for its compression resistance. The Crown isn’t quoting any new depth figures, however—which is fine, because the 3,900 meters on offer since the Deepsea’s launch in 2008 imposes roughly 65 times the pressure the human body can endure. Ceramic also offers anti-deformation properties, though, and there’s no doubt that this piece’s waterproofness will be more robust than previous models, to be tested only should you drop it overboard in the middle of the ocean.

Tool watches being fit for purpose whatever they’ll end up (not) being used for is one of the industry’s core underlying tenets: and, as well as offering a strikingly aquatic vibe, the deep blue dial admirably complements legibility features such as the Chromalight display, the contrasting shapes of the hour markers, and differentiated hands which, like the triangular ‘zero’ marker on the bezel, are also filled with Chromalite, Rolex’s proprietary luminescent material.

Cosmograph Daytona With Diamond Bezel and Mother-of-Pearl Dials

rolex yacht master 42 yellow

Can a reinterpretation of a classic be simultaneously faithful and bold? Yes. Beyoncé’s take on The Beatles’ Blackbird proved it when new album Cowboy Carter hit streaming platforms two weeks ago, and Rolex are proving it today with these two new iterations of the Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona.

Both are in 18-karat white gold; both have mother-of-pearl dials whose boundaries are graced with eight diamonds and three Chromalight hour markers; both are graced with a bezel set with 36 brilliant-cut diamonds. The differences? The one whose dial is white with dark chronograph counters comes with an Oysterflex bracelet; the inverted version of that color scheme comes with Oyster bracelet. Notably, this is the first time we’ve seen a mixing of mother-of-pearl colors from Rolex, and we’re already calling these the the “Pearl Pandas.”

This is not the first iteration of a piece originally created for hardcore racing drivers, back in 1963, to forego the useful tachymetric scale for jewels, but we’ve never heard anyone complain about that. It’s arguably the most eye-catching bejeweled Daytona to date, however.

Case Size: 40 mm  Movement: Calibre 4131 Power Reserve: 72 Hours Movement:  caliber 4131 auto-winding chronograph Price:  Oysterflex $61,400, Oyster bracelet $70,100

Day-Date 40 & 36 in Precious Metals

rolex yacht master 42 yellow

Nearly seven decades after the Day-Date became the first wristwatch to display the day of the week spelt out in full, Rolex has used new iterations of the model to demonstrate its dedication to incredmentally nudging small details toward perfection.

One new Day-Date 40 in 18-karat Everose gold introduces, for the first time, a slate ombré dial around whose deep black edge are found faceted, deconstructed Roman numerals and faceted index hour markers in 18-karat pink gold. (Some fans may remember this one from the ad during The Oscars.) Another, in 18-karat white gold, features a dial whose white mother-of-pearl surface calls to mind overlapping clouds: an effect which interacts seductively with the ten baguette-cut diamonds set onto the dial as hour markers.

In a new variant of the Day-Date 36, in 18-karat yellow gold, we see the deconstructed Roman numerals and faceted index hour markers previously reserved for the piece’s larger sibling set around a white lacquer dial; in another, in 18-karat Everose gold, the blue-green dial hue introduced on the Sky-Dweller last year has been adorned with ten baguette-cut diamonds as hour markers.

President bracelets—a moniker coined when Lyndon B Johnson wore a yellow-gold Day-Date in 1965—are a given for all of these sophisticated iterations.

Case Size: 40 mm/36 mm  Movement: Calibre 3225 Power Reserve: 70 Hours Price: Day-Date 40 Ombré dial $41,500, Mother of Pearl $47,050, Day-Date 36 White Roman dial $35,000, Blue with trapeze cut diamonds $80,000

Sky-Dweller in Rose and Yellow Gold

rolex yacht master 42 yellow

Arriving two whole decades after the last entirely new model Rolex added to its repertoire (the Yacht-Master), the Sky-Dweller, when it was unveiled to the world in 2012, was interpreted as being The Crown’s contribution to the gargantuan watch trend then riding the crest of the zeitgeist.

Subtle mutations since then have demonstrated far longer-term aims for the line: the latest example being these two new 18-karat gold versions—in 18-karat Everose gold with a slate dial, and 18 ct yellow gold with white dial—each, for the first time, sporting a Jubilee bracelet.

Displaying the time in two time zones simultaneously (local time with conventional center hands, reference time in 24-hour format on an off-center disc) as well as offering an annual calendar (‘Saros’) which automatically differentiates between 30- and 31-day months, Rolex’s most complicated wristwatch also features a Ring Command system using the bezel that allows the wearer to select functions with ease.

Case Size: 42 mm Movement: Calibre 9002 Power Reserve: 72 Hours Movement: caliber 9002 auto-winding annual calendar with second time zone Price: Everose $52,900, Yellowgold $49,000

1908 in Platinum with Ice Blue Dial

rolex yacht master 42 yellow

Rolex are calling this update on a piece launched only last year a “visual masterpiece”—and calling them out for hyperbole here would be churlish. Crafted in 950 platinum (which essentially refers to 95 percent purity), the new version’s ice blue dial, with its rice-grain guilloché texture, combines to stunning effect with the otherwise smooth minute track’s crimped pattern filet sauté—not to mention the piece’s brown alligator leather strap.

Named as a doff of the cap to the year Hans Wilsdorf registered what remains the only genuine household name in fine watchmaking, the piece packs other details that fall into the “ultra-subtle, but impossible to ignore once you know they’re there” category: not least the chamfering on the top edges of the middle case lugs and a bezel whose smooth, domed effect gives way to fluting lower down.

It’is great to see The Crown leaning into the 1908 series, as the previous Cellini models that this replaces somehow lacked that  je ne sais quoi that this watch appears to have heaps of. Also, this is Rolex’s slimmest watch, just as a dress watch should be.

Case Size: 39 mm Case material: Platinum Movement: Calibre 7140 Power Reserve: 66 Hours Price: $30,900

Why were so many metro stations in Moscow renamed?

Okhotny Ryad station in Soviet times and today.

Okhotny Ryad station in Soviet times and today.

The Moscow metro system has 275 stations, and 28 of them have been renamed at some point or other—and several times in some cases. Most of these are the oldest stations, which opened in 1935.

The politics of place names

The first station to change its name was Ulitsa Kominterna (Comintern Street). The Comintern was an international communist organization that ceased to exist in 1943, and after the war Moscow authorities decided to call the street named after it something else. In 1946, the station was renamed Kalininskaya. Then for several days in 1990, the station was called Vozdvizhenka, before eventually settling on Aleksandrovsky Sad, which is what it is called today.

The banner on the entraince reads:

The banner on the entraince reads: "Kalininskaya station." Now it's Alexandrovsky Sad.

Until 1957, Kropotkinskaya station was called Dvorets Sovetov ( Palace of Soviets ). There were plans to build a monumental Stalinist high-rise on the site of the nearby Cathedral of Christ the Saviour , which had been demolished. However, the project never got off the ground, and after Stalin's death the station was named after Kropotkinskaya Street, which passes above it.

Dvorets Sovetov station, 1935. Letters on the entrance:

Dvorets Sovetov station, 1935. Letters on the entrance: "Metro after Kaganovich."

Of course, politics was the main reason for changing station names. Initially, the Moscow Metro itself was named after Lazar Kaganovich, Joseph Stalin’s right-hand man. Kaganovich supervised the construction of the first metro line and was in charge of drawing up a master plan for reconstructing Moscow as the "capital of the proletariat."

In 1955, under Nikita Khrushchev's rule and during the denunciation of Stalin's personality cult, the Moscow Metro was named in honor of Vladimir Lenin.

New Metro stations that have been opened since the collapse of the Soviet Union simply say "Moscow Metro," although the metro's affiliation with Vladimir Lenin has never officially been dropped.

Zyablikovo station. On the entrance, there are no more signs that the metro is named after Lenin.

Stations that bore the names of Stalin's associates were also renamed under Khrushchev. Additionally, some stations were named after a neighborhood or street and if these underwent name changes, the stations themselves had to be renamed as well.

Until 1961 the Moscow Metro had a Stalinskaya station that was adorned by a five-meter statue of the supreme leader. It is now called Semyonovskaya station.

Left: Stalinskaya station. Right: Now it's Semyonovskaya.

Left: Stalinskaya station. Right: Now it's Semyonovskaya.

The biggest wholesale renaming of stations took place in 1990, when Moscow’s government decided to get rid of Soviet names. Overnight, 11 metro stations named after revolutionaries were given new names. Shcherbakovskaya became Alekseyevskaya, Gorkovskaya became Tverskaya, Ploshchad Nogina became Kitay-Gorod and Kirovskaya turned into Chistye Prudy. This seriously confused passengers, to put it mildly, and some older Muscovites still call Lubyanka station Dzerzhinskaya for old times' sake.

At the same time, certain stations have held onto their Soviet names. Marksistskaya and Kropotkinskaya, for instance, although there were plans to rename them too at one point.

"I still sometimes mix up Teatralnaya and Tverskaya stations,” one Moscow resident recalls .

“Both have been renamed and both start with a ‘T.’ Vykhino still grates on the ear and, when in 1991 on the last day of my final year at school, we went to Kitay-Gorod to go on the river cruise boats, my classmates couldn’t believe that a station with that name existed."

The city government submitted a station name change for public discussion for the first time in 2015. The station in question was Voykovskaya, whose name derives from the revolutionary figure Pyotr Voykov. In the end, city residents voted against the name change, evidently not out of any affection for Voykov personally, but mainly because that was the name they were used to.

What stations changed their name most frequently?

Some stations have changed names three times. Apart from the above-mentioned Aleksandrovsky Sad (Ulitsa Kominterna->Kalininskaya->Vozdvizhenka->Aleksandrovsky Sad), a similar fate befell Partizanskaya station in the east of Moscow. Opened in 1944, it initially bore the ridiculously long name Izmaylovsky PKiO im. Stalina (Izmaylovsky Park of Culture and Rest Named After Stalin). In 1947, the station was renamed and simplified for convenience to Izmaylovskaya. Then in 1963 it was renamed yet again—this time to Izmaylovsky Park, having "donated" its previous name to the next station on the line. And in 2005 it was rechristened Partizanskaya to mark the 60th anniversary of victory in World War II.

Partizanskaya metro station, nowadays.

Another interesting story involves Alekseyevskaya metro station. This name was originally proposed for the station, which opened in 1958, since a village with this name had been located here. It was then decided to call the station Shcherbakovskaya in honor of Aleksandr Shcherbakov, a politician who had been an associate of Stalin. Nikita Khrushchev had strained relations with Shcherbakov, however, and when he got word of it literally a few days before the station opening the builders had to hastily change all the signs. It ended up with the concise and politically correct name of Mir (Peace).

The name Shcherbakovskaya was restored in 1966 after Khrushchev's fall from power. It then became Alekseyevskaya in 1990.

But the station that holds the record for the most name changes is Okhotny Ryad, which opened in 1935 on the site of a cluster of market shops. When the metro system was renamed in honor of Lenin in 1955, this station was renamed after Kaganovich by way of compensation. The name lasted just two years though because in 1957 Kaganovich fell out of favor with Khrushchev, and the previous name was returned. But in 1961 it was rechristened yet again, this time in honor of Prospekt Marksa, which had just been built nearby.

In 1990, two historical street names—Teatralny Proyezd and Mokhovaya Street—were revived to replace Prospekt Marksa, and the station once again became Okhotny Ryad.

pershing 115 yacht

yachting/images/magazine/2005/122005/fea_pershing_525x350.jpg

It takes something very special to impress the jilted residents of the exclusive French town of St. Tropez. Years ago we brought this depot for the rich and famous to a standstill arriving with Virgin Atlantic Challenger II, but we had just set a record across the Atlantic. Sprinting into the port with the striking new, 40-knot Pershing 115 did not quite have the same impact, but this beautiful yacht did stop onlookers in their tracks as they stood and stared.

With the 115, Pershing joins a select band of boatbuilders who are going over the 100-foot mark, taking a quantum leap from the 88-foot former flagship design. This yacht has twice the volume of anything Pershing has ever built. Moreover I was on the first hull and for a prototype design they have done a really superb job of meeting their design and perfomance goals.

Pershing boss Till Antonelli is justifiably proud of the 115. “We knew there was a market out there for a larger Pershing and I think we took a bold step in making the jump straight from 88 to 115 feet. The result is there for all to see and it is a tribute to our new factory and the people who work there, Antonelli says.

The power behind this monster is a pair of 16 cylinder MTU diesels from the 4000 range that produce 3,700 hp each. These engines are huge and they seem to stretch forever along the engine compartment. They are coupled to ZF gearboxes and then the drive goes to KaMeWa water jets in what proved to be a very smooth power train. The water jets are unique in that the inlet ducts of the jets are an integral part of the hull molding which gives a better water flow to the impellers and improves their efficiency.

The two diesels have ample space between them and you see the reason for this when you look aft and see the molding in place for a third water jet. This gives the option to install a centerline TF50 gas turbine to bring the total power up to 13,000 hp. Now you are talking real excitement, and this installation is planned for the next unit that is already under construction. Look for speeds of over 55 knots from this second yacht, speeds that are squarely situated in the Pershing performance territory.

Access to the engine compartment is via a door in the cockpit which leads first to an auxiliary room with the switchboard, watermaker and air conditioning. Forward of this are the crew’s quarters and galley. Stairs lead up from the galley directly into the saloon, close by the dining table, and there is also a dumbwaiter for larger trays. The galley is fitted with all you need for sophisticated meal preparation and the styling, even in these working areas of the yacht, is a close match to the stunning guest areas.

Back aft, the swim platform that protects the water jets is bigger than the average sportsboat. Stairs lead up on both sides to the cockpit, and between them is the garage for the Zodiac tender together with its launching crane. You don’t need to skimp on the water toys on this yacht because there is a second garage that is revealed by raising part of the forward coach roof, housing two jet skis with another launching crane.

The 115 is full of more surprises and one of them comes from opening the door on the right of the saloon entrance. Here there is a stairway winding up to a very private sun deck sitting above the pilothouse. I was trying to determine why there was no sunroof on this yacht similar to those found on other Pershings-this sun deck was the reason. There is another, more public sunpad in the cockpit together with settees and a table, but the upper area is going to be everybody’s favorite.

The sliding saloon doors make an impressive entrance and walking into the saloon takes your breath away. There is none of the rich wood panelling so often found on superyachts, but here the designers have created a beautiful and light, almost minimalistic area with only the dining chairs and the blue leather locker fronts providing color. The settees are white leather, the woodwork a very pale gray-tinted ash, and the sides and overhead a very pale cream.

Quality is enhanced by integral modern artwork above the entrance door and on two of the side window pillars. The relaxing lounge area is aft and a dining table for 10 is forward in a open plan arrangement. Forward at the helm there are three imposing adjustable seats that create what looks like an altar to high performance.

The captain sits in the center chair, which is flanked by the engine and jet controls fitted into the armrests. Here he is master of all he surveys and he really can play tunes with the sensitive machinery controls. In front of him there are seven screens that provide all the information needed for high speed navigation and control, plus sophisticated monitoring systems. The latter have been specially developed by Pershing to control and monitor everything on board except the main engines. The engines have their own MTU dedicated displays and there is a separate display for monitoring the water jet. Large Simrad radar and chart displays provide a full picture of the navigation scene.

A couple of steps down from saloon level takes you into what is virtually a private cinema. Wide lounging settees and chairs face a big flat screen that can be fed from video, DVD or cable or satellite TV. This will be a popular evening relaxing area. Another stairway takes you to the staterooms where the layout is about the only conventional thing on this yacht: a master, a VIP and two twin cabins.

These are all decorated in a similar minimalistic style but with strong colors added through the leather bed bases, the mirror trims and the bright silk bed covers. The result is both modern and restful, with the spacious master stateroom occupying the full beam and featuring an angled bed and deep side windows to give natural light. The VIP stateroom in the bow is almost semi-circular in shape and large enough to have its own settee.

The heads have the same pale gray wood and modern fittings, including hemispherical glass basins. The soles here are wood but have metal strip inserts to give good grip when wet. The extravagant quality of the master stateroom can be seen in the fitting of his-and-her heads for the use of the owners.

The interior of this yacht may be stunning but it is the exterior styling that really sets the scene. The hull has the navy blue and silver combination that was pioneered by Pershing and has since been copied by many. This color scheme complements the series of rising curves that forms the superstructure and, like so much about this design, everything looks well integrated. The practical aspects of the design have been well thought out in most areas, but you only really appreciate the true quality of this yacht out on the water at speed.

We ran the 115 from Cannes to St.Tropez, which is a well-worn path for fast motoryachts. You appreciate one of the qualities of water jet drive with the very delicate maneuvering that is possible with this big yacht. Despite her size you can inch her forward or sideways delicately close to the dock, yet she will spin like a top when you need a quick response. It takes some skill and familiarity with the controls to get to this level of control but the effort is well worthwhile.

Out at sea the response is immediate and thrilling. The thrust from the jets powers the yacht onto plane and keeps it accelerating right up to its terminal velocity. The lack of vibration is impressive, and steering control is delicate and precise when you switch from the steerable joystick controls to the wheel steering. For trim adjustment, the 115 uses the latest interceptor system rather than trim tabs and these give an immediate response that reduces the adjustment period.

On our run down to St.Tropez we had a race with the TGV high-speed train along the coast. The train won that one, but there was no doubt we were fastest on the water that day. Pershing has found just the right balance in this yacht. This design has all the style you want to impress others, both inside and out, yet this is combined with very comfortable living on board. As for performance, 40 knots will meet most requirements but if you want to outrun everything on the water then you can always invest in the gas turbine option. Then maybe, you might even beat that train.
