What a lovely spot to sit and enjoy some nice food while looking out over the marina. A great menu plus some interesting options on the specials board. Our dishes of hake and chips, beef curry and short ribs were very tasty, cooked to perfection... and delivered with a smile. One of the attractions is that you are left to sit and chat, with a drink or two, for as long as you like before placing your food order. It's a very casual and relaxed place to dine. I will return. World class views . Exceptional food. Excellent service . I had my b day party and invited 18 people. Everything went of perfectly . Sitting with a view of the yachts is spectacular .

My wife and I decided to try out the Royal Yacht club before using it more widely. Their internal survey indicated that fish and chips was the favourite of the members - thus we ordered being assured that it was the catch of the day.... The result mushy fish (must have been defrozen) and indifferent chips. Service was patchy and the only redeeming feature was the view of multiple yachts in the marina from a not very atmospheric deck. Thus food 1, Service 2 and atmosphere 3. Parking in the street must be a nightmare on a busy day. More

I took my Mother to the Yacht Club with a couple of friends on Mothers day and the service was excellent but the food was terrible for a mothers day lunch,they didn't know if they were eating chicken or fish with the pasta,Mothers day supposed... to be special day for our mothers and that is why we treat them on such days to make there day very special but i was very disappointed in the chef on duty that day,got a nice view of the yachts and the mountain but for me that is a no go again. I visited the Royal Yacht Club a few weeks ago for a business meeting and we ended up the evening at the restaurant with a selection of dishes with my partners. Friendly and swift service. Great view and atmosphere. I didn't feel very hungry and... I decided to try a classic no risk dish: Natchos with Guacamole; I was great and much better than most I had lately. I am going to return as soon as possible to try other bistrot style dishes from the menu. More

We had a spur of the moment decision to visit the Yacht club and have lunch there on Saturday afternoon. Good food, good service and great view and atmosphere. They even had a market going on the day.they do have facilities for functions as well.

I could go on - but simply put the best food, the best staff and the best service and setting in miles! And the best part of it all? Its consistent! Well done Royal Cape ~ always such a pleasure to visit. Axxx

This time for a gathering o& long-standing friend from the rowing fraternity. Lunch inside th3 clubhouse( because of th3 reliable Cape Town. Wind) . A very clubby place with good food and an attentiv3 staff. I think you have to. Be invited so probably no... “walk ins”. But if you do get the chance it is well worth the effort. To get to the Club, if nay to fuel. A dream of sailing off to foreign places. More

Wherever you go in the world, to be able to eat at a yacht club is a very special treat and so it is at the Royal Cape. If the the south Easter winds have not forced you in doors the setting over looking the... marina is very special. The staff are always friendly and attentive. Not an expansive menu but certainly fits the ambiance of the yachting scene. Well presented food and very good value for the rand. More

We waited an extremely long time between starters, mains and dessert. The service is very slow with waitresses having no urgency whatsoever. The food is very bland with a hefty price tag attached to each meal. Not worth your money, spend it somewhere else.

Twenty of us arrived after 31 long days at sea in a crippled ship. Cape Town friends organized a reception for us at the Yacht Club. We were treated to a great buffet, a semi-private room, and good service. The outdoor space merged into the... interior and made for a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The harbor setting is great. There is not shortage of all types of crafts to look at. This was a great place for some good food, fellowship, and a few drinks. I hope to return someday. More

We visited for after-lunch drinks on a Sunday and was received very friendly by the doorman. Signed in and was escorted to table overlooking the harbour with its moored yachts. Beautiful!.

Tavern of the seas – the royal cape yacht club.

T T he Royal Cape Yacht Club, based in Cape Town, is closely associated with the city’s seafaring culture and has been a home from home for visiting sailors since 1905.  

Look down on Table Bay from Signal Hill on a Wednesday evening between October and March and you’ll see a scattering of sails fluttering out in the bay.  

This is the regular Wednesday night regatta, hosted by the Royal Cape Yacht Club, and an event that is as much part of the Cape summer scene as the south- easter that sends white clouds pouring over Table Mountain.  

The club, based in the Table Bay Harbour , is closely associated with the city’s seafaring culture, harking back to the days when the city was known as the Tavern of the Seas, a place where sailors could unwind after many days at sea on the route between Europe and the East.  

The Royal Cape Yacht Club continues this tradition by offering around-the-world sailors a place to moor their yachts and to meet members of the local yachting community.  

The club started out life in a humble boat shed at the foot of Loop Street back in 1905 , before a landfill project extended the city centre into an area now known as the Foreshore. It received the Royal Charter shortly after 1914 and moved into its present premises at the Small Craft Basin inside the harbour a decade after World War II.  

However, it was only after the inaugural Trans-Atlantic Cape to Rio yacht race in 1971 that yachting in the city really took off. Today, the club’s membership hovers around the 1   700-mark, the adjacent marina offers moorings for over 4 00 yachts, and the club is the centre of the city’s amateur yachting community and the base for a sailing academy.  

Visit on any given day and you’ll more than likely find a few 'yachties' messing about on their boats, a couple of international visitors passing through and some local folk catching up with each other over a beer.  

The club is housed in an unassuming, low-slung building featuring a restaurant and sunny outdoor terrace overlooking the marina, a bar, visitors' lounge, offices and several venues, like the Galley, Chartroom and Regatta Centre, which are rented out for parties and conferences.  

Although it’s members’ only, you may enter as a guest of a member, or you can take out a short-term membership for the duration of your stay in Cape Town. (And, no, you don’t have to own a yacht.)  

Over the years, the club has played host to several international yachting events, among them the Whitbread, Volvo and Hong Kong Challenge.

The Royal Cape Yacht Club is on Duncan Road in Table Bay Harbour , Cape Town .   

Things to do 

The V&A Waterfront is a retail and restaurant hub. You can also catch a ferry to Robben Island from here.

You can drive yourself to the club or get a taxi.  

What to pack 

If you go out yachting, take a waterproof jacket and comfortable shoes.

Just down the road from the club on Quay 500 is an old seafood restaurant called Panama Jack ’ s which is popular with the locals. The club also has a restaurant.

Welcome to the RCYC Sailing Academy

The RCYC Sailing Academy was formally established in 2012 at the Royal Cape Yacht Club, Cape Town Elliot basin, Table Bay, Duncan Road. The Academy was initially created as the Royal Cape Yacht Club’s CSI program, which was aimed at addressing the lack of access to our sport, for marginalized communities.

The Academy was formed with the aim to create opportunities for previously disadvantaged youth and address the imbalance of representation of people of colour within the Club.  We often work with The homestead foundation for street children and the Emagqabini education foundation , tutoring kids in Khayelitsha. The Academy found a pool for new students, who represented the most under-resourced communities in our society and aim to empower the kids through sailing and hopefully someday they will become a strong constituency of our sport and redress our diversity challenge.

In 2018 we registered as an NPO with our primary focus being skills development through sailing. The Academy has a standing committee which reports to the Executives of the Club.  In 2019 the Academy registered as a PBO and was approved in 2020 with qualifying criteria being skills development and welfare.

RCYC Sailing Academy runs its sailing programs mostly on weekends and we participate in big regattas and other races. The Academy has a variety of boats including 6 L26 boats  and 1 Lavranos 36  and undertakes sailing training during weekends and regattas. The L26 design is believed to be conducive for beginners, as the nature of it forces individual to be hands on all the times and enforces team work in many occasions. The Academy has more than 6 skippers, one Offshore Skipper and one senior instructor, who are fully qualified and experienced.

Our training program takes place between 10h00 to 15h00 weekend days, unless otherwise indicated. The program has been very instrumental in developing and nurturing raw sailing talent and the development of new skills, team work and sportsmanship amongst our students.

Previous success stories include Yonela Mkaza who was invited to Spain in 2018 to experience keelboat sailing. Two students, Yonela Tenela and Daniel Agulhas have coached sailing programmes in the American Summer Camps, in 2019.  Lebogang January took part in a Youth Regatta in New Zealand in 2020. One of our instructors, Athi Vena, is now  instructing at Milnerton Aquatic Club. Academy instructor Sibu Sizato has his Offshore Skippers ticket and has represented South Africa at World Championships.

The Academy crew has competed in the 2023 Cape2Rio race on board of “Alexforbes Archangel” a Lavranos 36. The Alexforbes ArchAngel crew comprised of skipper Sibusiso Sizatu (30), first mate Daniel Agulhas (29), Renaldo Tshepo Mohale (29), Azile Arosi (22) and Justin Peters (21).  The Academy are very proud of their 3 rd place result, winning the Punte Del Este trophy and the Telescope Trophy for Offshore Youth.

Royal Cape Yacht Club

The Club was founded as the Table Bay Yacht Club in 1905 and commenced operation as such in a waterside boatshed located some 50 to 60 metres northward of the foot of Loop Street. Surviving early vicissitudes, the club’s name was changed in 1914 to the Cape Yacht Club which incorporated the Alfred Rowing Club and shortly after we received the Royal Charter to become the Royal Cape Yacht Club.

Buffeted by change we moved from clubhouse to clubhouse, and it was not until the decade after the 2nd World War (1939 – 1945) that the shell of the present clubhouse came to be erected. It was added to when the local yachting boom – started by the first Trans-Atlantic Race from Cape Town to Rio de Janeiro in 1971 – took off and changed the Club from a small membership of around 300 to the present figure of some 3000.

Boat accommodation was forced to progress from swing moorings to the marina’s of today. Likewise control had to pass from amateur committees to the professional staff which you will find today. The Royal Cape Yacht Club sits at the foot of Africa, a quiet enclave tucked away in the bustle of Cape Town’s docks. It is a prime location for sailors looking for respite from stormy weather and the club has hosted thousands of weary sailors over the years.
