Ku-Kai Izakaya – Hidden Izakaya in Admiralty!

Looking to enjoy the sunset by the waters while tucking into an icy cold beer and some bites? Ku-Kai Izakaya is the place to be! Despite being slightly inaccessible via public transport, it’s definitely worth a visit.

Most diners here opt for the al fresco dining option for the feels but indoor seating is always available for those who would rather be in the comfort of air-conditioning.

They boast a wide variety of food items and after spending some time flipping through the menu, I decided to start my meal off with the Kani Tama Gratin ($13). This Japanese gratin was made with straight cut macaroni that was firm yet chewy, unlike your typical potato gratin.

The slight sweetness from the bits of snow crab and fish, and saltiness of the bacon bits made for a right balance that hit the spot. The Béchamel sauce and cheese also gave the gratin the creaminess it needed. The layer of aburi mentaiko added a hint of spice and fishiness.

Even with this being a side, the portion was on the smaller side. That said, it was just enough to whet my appetite without being too jelak.

You can’t go to an Izakaya and not have skewers! The Kushiyaki Omakase 5 piece Skewer Set ($22) had the usual suspects – Chicken Thigh, Chicken Balls, Chicken Thigh with Leek, Pork Belly and Shiitake Mushroom. They also have a 7 piece set ($30).

I just have to put it out there that even as I’m writing this all I can think about is the perfectly grilled skewers.

The chicken was moist and tender, the pork belly extremely flavourful and the lightly salted mushroom still slightly juicy. Since they were grilled over a charcoal fire, there was a tinge of smoky flavour in the skewers that complemented the sauce slathered all over.

Finally, I had their Seafood Okonomiyaki ($19) which seemed to be rather popular. You can opt for the Chicken ($16) or Pork ($18) option if you haven’t had enough of their meat dishes. Unfortunately, their rendition of this Japanese pancake missed the mark for me.

The Okonomiyaki was slightly too cakey for my liking and the exterior wasn’t as crispy as I would’ve hoped for it to be. The seafood ingredients were also slightly lacking in terms of quantity, with only little bits of Tako and Prawn scattered around. The only saving grace would be the mountain of Bonito Flakes that topped the cabbage pancake.

I would just go straight for the skewers and other bites they offer and skip their Okonomiyaki.

This hidden gem is perfect for any occasion – a post-work chill session, a family meal or even a romantic evening date. Due to their limited seating, I would recommend making a reservation before heading down!

Ku-Kai Izakaya is a hidden izakaya by the sea that looks straight out of a Japanese anime

Travel may be picking up, but we’re always on the lookout for hidden finds and exciting eats in Singapore. If you’re craving a little slice of Japan (which has sadly yet to open its borders for leisure travel), look no further than Ku-Kai Izakaya at SAF Yacht Club in Admiralty .

Scenic views & cosy ambience

Don’t be put off by the far-flung location — you’ll get to enjoy scenic views of the Northern coast at this hidden izakaya by the sea. The alfresco dining area is adorned with akachōchin (Japanese red lanterns) and even a torii gate, the perfect setting for a Japanese anime series.

If not for the surrounding yachts, this place would give off major “idyllic fishing village” vibes.

I may have watched one too many Netflix series centred around izakaya , like Midnight Diner , Izakaya Bottakuri , and Restaurant to Another World , but doesn’t the cosy-looking interior remind you of Restaurant Yukihara from Food Wars! (Shokugeki no Soma) ?

Hearty izakaya grub

Moving on to the food and alcohol, Ku-Kai Izakaya doles out comfort classics like Crispy Fried Chicken (S$12) , Kani Tama Gratin (S$11) , and Jaga Mentaiko (S$11) , all of which are making my mouth water.

Don’t miss out on the popular Omakase Skewer Set (S$19 for 5pcs, S$26 for 7pcs) , a platter of assorted kushiyaki skewers like tsukune , negima , and shiitake .

For a taste of the sea, the Aburi Shimesaba (S$15) and Kawa Eib-age (S$11) , or mini deep-fried river shrimps, are best washed down with pints of ice-cold Sapporo beer. Bliss .

Catch the sunset with your partner over a romantic dinner, or round up your makan kakis for a chill drinking session. One thing to note: you are highly encouraged to make reservations by calling 8304 3028 due to limited seating.

I never thought I’d ever say this, but date night in Admiralty sounds like a great idea.

Service was pretty bad / non-existent, food is average at best and totally not worth the price. It is the only place we've been where green tea is priced at $3 and non-refillable (only found out when we asked for a refill). The only saving grace is their ambience by the jetty. Chill vibes to hang out for a night drink but other than that, save your money for better service and food elsewhere.

They just opened 9 weeks ago, the food is good, they served sake, draft beer and High ball, the staff very friendly and service is 👌. Feature my favourite dish, Ika Ichiyaboshi. Grilled Dry Squid served with Sichimi Mayonnaise.The texture was very good, tender, springy but not chewy. Take a step back in time when you dine at  1036 Seafood by the bay , a vintage & nostalgic looking zi char restaurant. Experience at Ku-Kai Izakaya

My new year eve saw me visit Ku-Kai for the first time. I was instantly drawn to the red hanging lantern off the Trii gate, a glow by the oceanfront.

A small 20 seats are available under a shelter should the rain arrive. Otherwise, enjoy the cool sea breeze as you partake in your meal.

Food & Drinks

As an izakaya, the place offers up an assortment of dishes, with the majority of them suitable as sides for drinks. Overall, the dishes were certainly tasty, but much more expensive than places elsewhere. You are certainly paying a premium for the ambiance and view.

For starters, we ordered the group favourite, Octopus Wasabi. It certainly whets your appetite with the sharp spicy notes with the fresh seafood.

Continuing the seafood selection, we got a large grilled squid. The squid had a light char to it, imparting a mild smoky flavor while being tender to the bite.

A grilled Mackerel had a firm juicy flesh, with each segment having a blend of a slightly burnt skin and the sweetness of the meat juxtaposing nicely. Lemon on the side provided a measure of freshness lightening it up the whole dish.

The two prawns were a pleasant surprise. Even from afar the fragrant dish made its presence known. A slice of tamagoyaki and some pickled radish with greens wraps up the dish.

Getting grilled meat on sticks at an izakaya is a must-try, so we went into the deep end with Ku-Kai’s 7 stick omakase. At $30 for 7 sticks, that comes to around $4 per stick, consisting of mushroom and various parts of the chicken. Yakitori itself allows one to appreciate each part of the chicken separately to its fullest potential on the grill.

While Karaage is conspicuously absent from the menu, in its place is the Crispy Fried Chicken. I’ll have to admit that despite not being the round juicy fried golden goodness that is the Karaage, this dish is a worthy contender.

Overall the dishes offered are certainly tasty and well-prepared, albeit on the pricier side. A party of five raked up a $300 bill, including a sashimi platter and a number of additional sides. I would recommend paying a visit to the place just for the view and the experience of having a chill seaside drinking session (barring the designated driver) and have a good time there.

Food not bad, quiet place. We book this place to avoid the crowds in shopping malls (where it is unlikely to accomodate big group at weekends)

Was near by woodlands so decided to drop by ocean sooon for a visit. The dining area set up for dinner by the waters was good and the fan was good! We didn’t feel hot and sticky as can be after the sun sets the... hot air tends to creep in. Service was very good and food was good. Fried rice and beef cubes in black pepper goes great with tiger beer! More

Yes. It is in the outback of Singapore but Singaporeans are known to travel distances for good food. This was worth the effort. If you want to have crabs, please do call them in advance and make sure they are available and reserve them before... you make the trip. My family and I enjoyed every bit of our experience. And the bill was at least half of what I would pay in the city. And the ambience evoked a sense of nostalgia having seafood beside the sea in the night. Priceless More

I took my whole family to celebrate Mother's day with my mum and regretted it. The dish named crispy chicken but its not chicken meat, its made of fish cake covered with chicken skin. It cost 32.90 more expensive than a real whole chicken. The... chilli crab is not the usual chilli crab sauce. Its too sweet and we dont like the taste they cooked it. But the crab is fresh. The waitress took wrong order for the same veg twice! And when I feedback to manager she said the waitress is new doesn't know how to order. But the menu also labelled with code so I think shouldn't have missed. Total dinner cost $176 for 5 dishes with drinks. Will not go again! More

That's how good it is. An outback and laid back place (a bit of a travel but worth it) with beautiful view of the Straits of Johore. Simple and unpretentious. Service was surprisingly good despite it being busy and only 3 service staff. Food were... served promptly using an iPad. Food...wow wow wow. This was our first visit to Moscow so I choose the Lodgepole from other reviews. It was a great choice for an interesting dinner. We had a reservation and got there a little early. Were seated right away and had a lovely conversation about the... area and restaurant Michael. They eventually got pretty busy even on a Wednesday night. The kitchen is open and at the back of the dining room. My understanding is it's a family business. They really have a great menu. We decided to just get entrees and they gave us the Fried Palouse Garbanzos snack on the house. They have a nice wine list. No hard liquor, just beer and wine. It was recommended that the pan chicken was a specialty so I got that and it was really nice. They use chilies in the cooking but not so it overwhelms the flavors of everything else. My husband got the lamb chops and they were cooked perfectly. The food is locally sourced (when possible). Good food, good menu, great service and a friendly vibe. More

Due to COVID limitations, there are only a few tables inside for fining so make a reservation. Everything from the deviled eggs starter and baguette to the wagyu beef, gnocchi and pan roasted chicken was outstanding. We even went in for dessert-apple cake and ice... cream pie. Pricey, poor service, disappointing food. The service was questionable and we had to wait an hour for the food and it was below average. Crostini was burnt, duck overcooked, kale was charred. The beef rigatoni had good flavor but at its price point, a focus... on pasta and minimal beef. Would not return. More

Securing a reservation at this restaurant requires planning weeks in advance. After multiple trips to Pullman/Moscow where I forgot to book far enough in advance, I finally remembered to snag a reservation. Only the 4:30p and 8:30p slots were available, and at the time they... claimed an 8:30p closing time online. I called and received assurances that booking at 8:30p would be fine and would not imperil our ability to order the tasting menu. Upon our arrival, we were greeted warmly and seated promptly, and we placed our order for the tasting menu, with the intention of pairing wines. Moments later the waitress returned and informed us that the kitchen said it was too late and that they would not be serving any more tasting menus that night. When I objected and told her that I'd called in advance to ask about that issue SPECIFICALLY, she just shrugged and gave us back the menus. Due to the hour and nowhere else nice being open by then, we decided to proceed with ordering entrees, but we were so upset that we didn't order anything else. Our entrees were not particularly memorable, and when our party left, about the only positive comment we had to share was that at least we saved a lot of money. I will never return. More

In the interest of full disclosure, we ate here on opening night so please read this review with that in mind. However, our experience left us a bit disappointed. We ordered a few beers without getting carded (we're young) and waited 1.5 hours for our... food. Lodgepole has a fun atmosphere and great decor, so it wasn't too painful. They brought out an appetizer ($4.50) as an apology for the long wait and asked if we wanted any more beers. I asked if mine could be brought out with my meal, but the service brought it out before anyhow. The server was polite, but obviously overwhelmed. Their menu seemed too eclectic while lacking any interesting dishes. They were out of my first choice (being opening night) so I went with the steak. When my $25 dinner did arrive, it was cooked rare just like I asked and was seasoned well. The sides included a plain, mildly overcooked russet potato and cumin carrots. The dish was cooked with great technique, but had very little flavor and "soul" which left me and my friends feeling like it wasn't worth the price. Other friends, who had eaten there a few days after us, told us the same thing. We will try Lodgepole again in a few months - hopefully they will improve. More

Just happened to drive by and found this little gem. Evidently opened not too long ago. No wait for seating, we sat on the patio, enjoyed the beautiful evening and a fabulous meal. We are from Southern California and I am a bit picky due... to the fact my husband is a great cook. If we eat out, it must be worth it. This was definitely worth it. From appetizers to dessert, all were prepared excellently. In my humble opinion, Moscow is limited on fine dining options...so far after trying the most popular around town....this is my new fave. Stopped in for drinks and a couple appetizers and was very impressed. The happy hour offerings are diverse and well priced. We tried both the magic hour and flower child drinks. Both were very fresh tasting. The Hama Hama clams were so good. Cannot recommend... them enough. We also tried the pickled deviled eggs which were a great take on a classic. The patio tables are spaced out nicely so while it was busy, it still felt relaxing. Will make a point to eat here any time I'm in the area. More

Consider Lodgepole when you are going out for a special occasion. I had the steak and my husband had the chicken. Both were very good, but the steak did outshine the chicken. The waitstaff were attentive and very knowledgeable about the wine list and menu.... Great experience, we'll be back! More

Something I have discovered during my trip to America is that there is a tendency to feed customers with lots of food. So much so that they have to ask for a doggy bag. You know what, personally I would rather have a meal that... I can enjoy and finish then and there. And so, when I was presented with a delicious reasonably sized meal at the Lodgepole Restaurant, I already knew I was going to enjoy this. And I did - delicious! Teamed with some great service and some tasty beer, and I had a great experience with some colleagues. More

Best upscale dinning in Moscow. Great menu offerings as well as a Happy Hour Menu. Staff has always been professional and attentive.

Well thought out menus incorporating locally grown food as available. Their 5 Course Dinners are excellent!

Near the smolenskaya station, this restaurant is run by your actual genuine Turkish family who seem to speak most European languages. Food was excellent, as was the beer! A little on the pricey side but excellent quality with friendly staff. Sit outside in the summer!

I have been 3 times. Everything was perfect. All personal speaking Turkish, English, Russian and Arabic. Adana Kebab was amazing!

Stopped by for lunch while taking a look at Arbat street. Nice decor and atmosphere. Staff efficent and friendly. Good caesar salad and calamari. The lamb kebab was also pretty good.

Ordinary cocktail, with few alcohol; probably the restaurant is better. Beautiful Turkish restaurant, with possibility of self service and table service, suitable for couple and friends dates. Prices quite high for the quality of drinks

I have eaten here several times, and each time it doesn't disappoint. The food is authentic Turkish, great portions, and delicious. The staff is friendly, attentive, and speaks excellent English. The owner delivered the food himself since the restaurant wasn't very busy. He was engaging,... funny, and has a penchant for American politics. He was very excited to have won a small wager against the waitstaff that Trump would become President. They have a homemade beer, which is excellent, and homemade wine which was good, but not amazing. I recommend anything on the menu, it's all very good. Prices were moderate given the quality of the food. They take your coat at the door to give you more room at your table. I highly recommend! More

Located on old Arbat. Good for lunch and dinner. Very nice environment. Tables outdoor advised. Good traditional Turkish cuisine. Personnel mannerly although with limited knowledge of English language. Average prices, 4.300 RUB for a family of four (two adults, two teens, no wine).

I am a fan of Turkish cuisine, so whan I saw this restaurant on the Arbat on a rainy night in Moscow I decided to give it a try. Wise decision. I had the best adana lula kebab I ever had out of Turkey. Everything... was fresh and tasty. Very well done! And the check was another pleasant aspect of the meal. More

Bosphor is right off of Arbat Street. The food was very good, and the indoor atmosphere was nice. There was a large choice of traditional Turkish food on the menu, which was available in English. The person at the door did not speak English, but... they found a waiter who spoke English well and was a good host. The price was a good value, and I would recommend to friends and associates. More

After walking around a lot we bumped into this restaurant and decided to have dinner here as it was close to our hotel. The lady at the door couldn't speak English, but there were tables free and she let us in. The waiter was very... kind and his English was pretty good. Menu was also in English, so it was not difficult to choose something. Portions were a bit small, but everything was delicious! We paid around £65 for 2 people including wine. More
