Boat Camping Guide: the tent to sleep on board

Minimal Logo

Boat Camping tent: aft installation has many advantages. Here’s what

boat camping tent at night

Instead, it is much better to use (if you have it) the aft sundeck of your boat and set up the tent just there, thus taking advantage of the maximum beam of the boat and thus inflating the longitudinal mattress.

The advantages are multiple : less inclination for sleeping, less roll, direct access to the transom, proximity to both the engine and the steering console and, therefore, the possibility of checking the status of the battery and all the instruments on board, easy access to all bow lockers, where belongings are normally stowed.

The fist boat camping experience is almost always like this. People use traditional camping equipment, without a specific plan.

The question that naturally arises is the following: is this what is meant by boat camping ? Once I would certainly said yes but, after many years, I can assure you that, if you want to fully enjoy the experience in total safety and the upmost comfort and privacy, well….my answer is no.

Custom boat camping tent: the best possible solution

In order to better suit your needs, the tent should be designed according to the specific characteristics of your boat . Made of the right fabric, it should be therefore easy to assemble and, above all, easy to disassemble, fold and store in its bag.

Boat camping tent: it should be assembled and disassembled every day

boat camping tent during the day

Sunbrella is undoubtedly the best fabric for a boat camping tent, because it is lightweight, moisture-resistant and easy to fold.

My advice is to use an awning with a set of extensions connected with the hinges on the four sides and hooked to the saddle tank.

The tent should be assembled and disassembled every day: please don’t ever understimate this procedure.

The living comfort of a boat camping tent is surprising and there’s a lot of space available. Privacy is always guaranteed and there is no heat, cold or moisture.

A final recommendation: the tent should be always assembled before the sunset and after tubular desalinization in order to prevent moisture from remaining inside and thuse having the possibility to sleep dry.

Good night!

How much does this boat enclosure tent cost? Where can I buy one of these?

Nice drip edge allows water to build up in your bilge section. You really have to wonder.

If your Boom does not extend far enough back into the Cockpit, we can design your Tent to extend further aft to the backstay, or a line tied between twin backstays.

If you have a  Stackpack , we can usually develop a design that secures either under the Boom or alternatively, zips to the sides.

If you do not find inspiration from the pictures below, then please look at our  Deck Covers  for more ideas. These can fully cover the decks and because they are usually manufactured in three zip together sections, the middle and aft section can be used independently as a Boom Tent.

How to Pick the Right Sailboat Cockpit Enclosure

A good sailboat cockpit enclosure does more than just keep you warm and dry. Read this blog post to learn how to pick the right sailboat cockpit enclosure.

deena davis - Silverton Enclosure .jpg

A sailboat cockpit enclosure is a straightforward piece of hardware that prepares your  your watercraft for use. It’s a rigid frame covered with fabric and see-through enclosure windows/panels that protect you and your passengers from spray, wind, sunshine, and rain.

A good sailboat cockpit enclosure does more than just keep you warm and dry; it offers protection from UV rays, fabric strength and tear resistance, clarity in the windows, and so much more. In fact, there are so many features and options available today that when you’re considering a sailboat cockpit enclosure, you might want to consult a forum or you can check out other online resources to help you understand the landscape.

So what do we think makes a good sailboat cockpit enclosure? Here’s a quick list of things to to look for before you buy:

  • UV Ray Resistance : Protecting you, your guests, and loved ones from the harmful effects of the sun’s rays is one of the most important reasons for having a sailboat cockpit enclosure.
  • Clarity : The windows or panels of a cockpit enclosure should be clear and easy to see through, without any cloudiness, fisheye effects or swirl marks.
  • Strength : The enclosures should have a sturdy frame and be made from a specialized marine fabric that is waterproof and mold/mildew resistant.
  • Color : The marine fabric that makes up the rest of the enclosure - not the windows or panels - should be colorfast and able to withstand the rigors of the sea. Your supplier should also have a variety of colors available.
  • Hardware : The hardware of your sailboat cockpit enclosure should be strong, made of materials that don’t rust easily, and that include the right zippers, poles, and sewing techniques. You’d be surprised - not all enclosures are made equally when it comes to quality.

Once you’ve decided you want a sailboat cockpit enclosure, you need to consider a few things that will impact your choice of product and style. Do you want a fully enclosed structure? Or do you want a partially enclosed one? For example, if you like to sail on calmer waters under clear skies, then a partial enclosure might be right for you. But, if you if you often find yourself in rough conditions, a full enclosure might be a better fit.

Some other things to consider include the types of fabric and enclosure panels you want to use when it comes to design. Your enclosure should fit the lines of your boat and use colors that match your watercraft, and the special features of your fabric (like UV resistance) should be designed for the environment you sail your boat in. Don’t just go with any marine fabric, they’re not all the same.

Finally, always do your research and due diligence when it comes to investing in your boat. Find out who supplies the best fabrics and enclosures and ask your manufacturer/installer about the different products, services, and warranties that are available.

Jon Boat Tent Guide

sailboat tent enclosure

Have you ever wanted to sleep on your jon boat? Having a tent out when camping out in the wilderness is a priority for sure, but there’s no doubt that you’d need a tent when camping in your jon boat. Deciding if it’s the right move for you means understanding what’s possible when putting a tent in your jon boat.

So, can I outfit my jon boat with a tent? You can outfit your jon boat with a tent as long as you’re ready to do a little handy work. Installing a canopy or tent on your jon boat can be difficult, but putting in a little time will go a long way.

Being able to have your jon boat outfitted with a tent means you’ll be able to enjoy the great outdoors while cruising around in your jon boat. Whether it starts to rain or you want to escape the heat of the sun, a tent or canopy is a great option when considering the next upgrade to your jon boat.

Tents for Jon Boats

While not the most common thing to do to a jon boat, outfitting yours with a tent is an option. Most jon boaters would put a canopy or some sort of shade on top of their jon boat instead of a tent, but there are those that would love to camp out on their boat. That’s who this post is written for.

Outfitting a tent onto a jon boat means you’ll have to do a bit of investigation on:

  • The size of your jon boat.
  • The area you’d like to cover with a tent.
  • A tent that can cover the selected area.
  • The weather conditions you’re willing to endure.
  • How you’ll attach your tent.

These are just some of the important considerations to take into account when outfitting your jon boat with a tent. The great part is that by investigating these topics, you’ll have plenty of options for getting a tent on your jon boat regardless of the size.

The first thing you’ll need to do when looking to outfit your jon boat with a tent is to measure your jon boat. This means knowing how long and wide the area of your entire boat’s interior and exterior. By knowing this, you should be able to gauge what’s possible when considering the size of the tent you might need.

It may be the case that you don’t want to cover the entirety of your jon boat, which is why I suggest deciding which area you want to cover with your tent. Now, you need to be careful here because there can be a lot of nuances when it comes to truly decide where you want your tent located. Will you have enough space to lie down or sit? What are you encapsulating with your tent?

Once you know the specific area of your jon boat you’d like to outfit with a tent, you’ll need to go out and find a tent that can cover that area. Now, there are no specific types of tents made for jon boats, so you’ll need to bare minimum find one that’ll cover that area so you can then cut and adjust the tent to properly fit that area. Alternatively, some boaters will just use a bimini top that has plastic drapes that can fold down and strap or buckle to the side of the boat to somewhat function as a tent.

When finding the tent that works for you and your jon boat, you want to most definitely consider the specific circumstances you’ll find yourself in while camping on your jon boat. It may be the case that you live in a mostly sunny area, in which case you’d want a tent that keeps UV rays out and stays cool. Maybe it gets a bit rainy where you are, so you’ll need to invest in a waterproof tent. These are important considerations before buying a tent you’ll be outfitting on your jon boat.

Now that you have your tent and you know where you’re going to attach it, it all comes down to getting it put on your jon boat. I suggest cutting out the bottom of the tent so that you can still get around on your jon boat when the tent is up. Also, finding a way to get the poles attached to the side of your jon boat is key and may require you to install some holders where you can place those poles (similar to a fishing rod).

The most difficult about this process is installing a tent onto your jon boat. Luckily, with a little handy work and creativity, you can get a tent installed on your jon boat soon enough. As I mentioned before, it’s not the most common way to go when accessorizing jon boats, but there’s no doubt there are jon boaters out there camping with a tent on their jon boat. So why not you?

Can I Sleep on a Jon Boat?

If you’re looking to outfit a tent onto your jon boat, then you’ll likely be wanting to take a snooze while you’re out on the water. The question of whether or not it’s possible to sleep on your jon boat definitely exists since there are plenty of jon boaters looking to spend more time out on the water.

You can most definitely sleep on your jon boat as long as the area that you’re cruising around in allows for boats to stay overnight. There are certain considerations you should take into account before embarking on the adventure of sleeping on your jon boat, but they’re relatively easy to account for.

Make sure that the weather is not going to be too intense for you when sleeping on your jon boat. Maybe it starts to rain very heavily causing you to get wet and uncomfortable. Maybe the wind kicks into high gear causing your tent to fly away leaving you exposed. And maybe it’s just too hot to endure inside an enclosed space such as a tent.

When sleeping on a jon boat, you definitely want to make sure you’re safe from any of these weather situations. It doesn’t take long for them to creep up on you, especially when you’ve dozed off. Either way, before sleeping on your jon boat, consider heading in if the weather forecast is too hazardous.

Tips for Sleeping on Your Jon Boat

Sleeping on a jon boat is something that I’ve done several times, but never with a tent. While outfitting jon boats with a tent isn’t the most common thing to do, it actually makes sense if you plan on sleeping on your jon boat on a regular basis. Either way, there are some important tips to consider when sleeping on your jon boat.

For one, you want to make sure that your tent is securely fastened to your jon boat. There’s no way you want it to fly away in case a little or a lot of wind comes your way. That would ruin your sleeping experience most definitely, which is why installing your tent properly is so important.

You also want to consider getting yourself an anchor that’ll effectively keep your jon boat firmly in place while your sleeping. If your jon boat starts to drift while you’re out like a light, there’s no knowing where you’ll end up the next time you wake up. Luckily, jon boats don’t need big, expensive anchors to stay put.

If you’re looking for a good anchor for your jon boat, you definitely want to check out the Extreme Max Complete Grapnel Anchor Kit (link to read reviews on Amazon). I use one of these all the time on my jon boat whenever I’m fishing and don’t want the boat to drift. It’s a fantastic option because it’s portable, has a buoy marker for the rope, and it’s able to attach to a multitude of bottom conditions, such as coral, rock, and weeded areas.

Another important tip for when you decide to sleep on your jon boat is to keep an alarm handy and set it before snoozing off. This is important because you should always be alert when out on the water, especially if you’re the captain of your vessel. It’s your responsibility to keep the boat and anyone else on your boat safe.

Staying safe on your jon boat is of the utmost importance, which is why I suggest keeping a first aid kit and spare water on your jon boat before dozing off. Again, you never know when you’ll wake up to hazardous weather conditions that cause you to dehydrate or bounce around on your boat causing injury.

If you do decide on sleeping on your jon boat, the last (and certainly not least) tip is to consider outfitting your jon boat with a tent. While there aren’t too many options out there, the Aleko Canopy Boat Tent Sun Shelter for Boats (link to read reviews on Amazon) may be a good option for you. It seems to be able to withstand both extreme sunny weather while also withstanding the winter cold. The best part is it’s probably much easier to outfit this to your jon boat than a normal tent since it already has the bottom cut out and all the necessary attachments.

This will help you determine if the tent enclosure will fit properly on your boat.
  • Inspect the Mounting Points : Examine the mounting points on your pontoon boat where the tent enclosure will be attached. These mounting points are typically located on the railing or the sides of the boat. Ensure that they are in good condition and sturdy enough to support the weight of the tent enclosure.

Once your pontoon boat is prepared, it’s time to attach the tent enclosure. This step requires careful attention to detail to ensure a secure and stable installation. Follow these guidelines:

  • Tension the Tent Fabric : Adjust the tension of the tent fabric by tightening any adjustable straps or buckles. This will help eliminate any sagging and ensure a taut and secure fit. It’s important to strike a balance between a tight fit and avoiding excessive strain on the fabric or frame.
  • Use Support Poles : Some tent enclosures come with support poles that can be used to provide additional stability. These poles can be placed strategically inside the tent to prevent sagging and improve overall structural integrity.
  • Consider Anchoring Options : Depending on the design of your pontoon boat and the tent enclosure, you may have the option to anchor the tent to the ground or use sandbags or weights to keep it in place. This is particularly useful when camping on land or in areas with strong winds.

Pontoon Boat Camping: Enclosures, Preparing, Ideas & Tips

pontoon boat camping

Looking for new ways to enjoy your boat? Sure, those mid-lake day trips might have satisfied your little family up until now. But there are more ways to experience your pontoon than simply taking it out for a spin once in a while. We're talking about pontoon boat camping.

Melding together comfort and the great outdoors, camping on deck is the perfect option for families who want to enjoy the serenity of mother nature without actually having to roll in the dirt. Planning a fun-filled on-deck camping trip with the whole family? Here's how to do it.

Preparing for Pontoon Camping

Pontoon boats are exceptionally versatile, and their wide decks make them ideal for setting up camp. But before we talk about anything else, it's important that you have all the essentials you need to make your camping trip both comfortable and safe.

Here are some must-have items that you need to buy before you haul the whole family for an overnight trip on your boat.

Porta-Potty

portable toilet

Unless the gang is okay with everyone taking a dump in the bushes a few steps from camp, you're going to want to buy a porta-potty. An outdoor portable toilet can make the experience of emptying your bowels alongside mother nature much more comfortable.

There are loads of options to choose from, but if you're hauling a pretty big family, capacity should be your biggest concern. This SereneLife Portable Toilet has a 5.3 gallon holding tank which might be enough for an overnight camping trip on your pontoon boat.

Check out our guide to portable pontoon boat toilets for more options.

Toilet Enclosure

enclosure

No one wants to evacuate their system with everyone else standing around to see. Your portable toilet is going to need an enclosure of its own to make things a little more private. Pop-up tents are pretty popular these days in the camping niche since they're easy to set up and they fold up really small for storage.

Some tents incorporate a window cut-out that you can open or close to let fresh air in, in case that's a necessity. You might also want to get other tents for changing or taking showers. Some people even set up their pop-up bathrooms on their pontoon boats for easy access.

We recommend the WolfWise Pop-up Shower Tent .

Outdoor LED Lamp Lights

outdoor led lighting

If you're camping in an area with limited or no lighting, then a set of outdoor LED light lamps should be on your list. Solar powered LED light lamps are great for outdoor use since you won't need to plug them in to power them up. Some even have a USB port that lets you hook up your phone to charge.

Consider the size of your boat and the number of people you're taking with you. It would be ideal to have a LED light set at each corner of your deck so there aren't any blind spots on board. Then you should consider having a spare light that you can take with you in case you plan to take a stroll as the sun goes down.

We like the Camping Lanterns with USB Charge .

Space Heater

portable heater

Things are going to get pretty cold when the night settles in. And because pontoon boats are particularly exposed, sleeping on board could become impossible as the night wears on. Fortunately, a space heater can fix that.

When you're buying one of these bad boys, make sure you take a look at the device's power source especially if you're going to run it for several hours throughout the night. Some need to be plugged into an outlet, and take up serious energy if you're hooking up to a portable generator. Some use propane, which can be much more efficient especially if you're outdoors. Just make sure you take the necessary precautions because it's going to be a fire hazard.

pontoon boat grill

No one's saying it's wrong to pack pre-cooked meals for your camping trip, but no one says it's necessary either. Part of the fun of camping is that you get to cook your food in exciting new ways. If your pontoon boat has a grill installed, then you can cook up whatever you catch after an afternoon of fishing .

If you're using a propane powered heater like the one we mentioned above, then you can also use it as a stove. Again, safety protocol is key when operating a grill or propane stove. It's all fun and games until a fire breaks out. Bring a lighter and water proof matches along to help light the grill with less effort.

We love the Cuisinart Grill for Pontoon Boats .

Cooking and Eating Accessories

picnic backpack with utensils

Since we're on the topic of meal-prep, might as well talk about all of the other accessories and items you'll need for a seamless outdoor cooking experience. Of course, a cooler is a must if you want to keep meat and produce fresh until the morning. Some boat owners even go as far as getting a mini fridge, but that also depends on the kind of power you have on board.

You can also take a second cooler with you to store ice and drinks. Consider something like these pontoon cooler tables . Some other items you can consider include plates, utensils, and cups. You can get a whole picnic set that stows away into a neat little package so it doesn't clutter your limited boat space when it isn't in use.

Check out the Coleman Xtreme Cooler , the Alpicool Portable Fridge and the Apollo Walker Picnic Backpack Set Up .

First Aid Kit

first aid kit

You'll never know what might happen outdoors until it happens. And while no one really wishes for accidents and injury to occur, it's always better to be prepared for the worst. A first aid kit is a must have if you're camping on your pontoon boat, especially for boating accidents that might not be life threatening.

You can piece one together yourself by buying all of the first aid items separately. That includes bandages, tape, scissors, swabs, gauze, cotton balls, gloves, and wound disinfectant. Or you could take the easy route and just buy a whole kit that includes all of the safety essentials.

We highly recommend the Surviveware Survival First Aid Kit for Ourdoors .

Bug Repellent and Sunscreen

bug repellent

There are loads of bugs out there just waiting to feast on your skin. And while a bug bite or two might not be too big of a deal, it can turn into a sleepless night when the relentless stinging makes your whole body itch. Fortunately, a good spray or layer of bug spray should be enough to solve that. Make sure you get a formulation that's developed to last several hours so you can sleep soundly through the night.

Another essential item within the same realm would be sunscreen. Harsh sunlight and UV rays can cause painful burns on exposed skin. Unless you're going to be covered from head to toe in clothing (which is unlikely considering summer heat), you're going to want to make sure you have enough UV protection in the form of lotion.

You can't go wrong with OFF! Deep Woods Bug Spray as well as the Coppertone Sport Sunscreen Spray to protect you from the UV rays.

vhf radio for pontoon boat camping

Anything can happen when you're outdoors on a camp trip, and you can't really tell when you'll have to call for help. If you're camping somewhere where you can just call for help by giving a holler, than you're pretty much set. But what if you're camping in a place where help might take hours to arrive?

For your protection and safety, you should consider copping a VHF radio. Water proof marine VHF radios are a prerequisite for pontoon boats. But if you don't have one at the ready, you can get one from the store at a very reasonable price.

Check out the Uniden Marine VHF Waterproof Radio .

Sleeping Bags

turn your pontoon boat into a camper

Unless you're ready to sleep on your cold hard deck, then you should get a sleeping bag. Again, choosing the right bag is really a matter of preference. Sleeping bags come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, so you can be sure to find one that's a perfect match for your preferences and standards. Some people prefer the comfort of an inflatable bed over sleep bags.

You have the option to buy a single sleeper or a double, depending on your preferred sleep arrangements. It also helps to choose something that provides enough comfort and padding without being a chore to store and stow away. If you anticipate that you might camp on your boat pretty often, then don't hesitate to invest in a sleeping bag that's better quality.

We really like the RYONGII Single Waterproof Sleeping Bag or the TETON Mammoth Queen Size Sleeping Bag .

Beach Anchor

beach anchor

Think about the logistics of docking in a shallow, sandy water for a minute. Your typical anchor might not do the job, since it's intended to work in areas with significant water depth. Of course, you could always just beach your pontoon, but if that's not something you're used to, you might want to invest in other gear.

A beach anchor is a simple device that digs into the sand under the water to give your pontoon boat something to hold it in place while it floats around in shallow water . There are various designs available, and they're always easy to install and pull from the water while maintaining your boat right next to your camp site.

We recommend the Beachr Beach Umbrella Sand Anchor .

Emergency Gear

inflatable dinghy boat for emergencies

You're going to want to be ready for whatever mother nature might decide to toss in your direction as you camp on the water. And while a set of life vests should be on board at all times during every trip (one for each passenger on your pontoon), there are other emergency gear essentials to take with you.

An inflatable dinghy boat should be one of the things you consider taking with you. This just gives you an emergency vessel that you can use in case something makes your pontoon boat inoperable while you're out on your camping trip.

You should consider the Newport Vessels Inflatable Dinghy Boat for up to 6 people.

What About Pontoon Boats Camping Enclosures?

pontoon boat camping enclosures

If you were looking to turn your pontoon boat into a camper enclosure accessories should be at the top of your list. Unlike a bimini top that only offers shade against the sun, pontoon enclosures provide complete cover to keep things like bugs and pests out since it has a roof and walls like a full-on room. It also protects against heat and UV rays from all directions, the same way a camping tent would.

Although designs vary, you mostly pull the canvas over a framework to keep the whole thing in place. Choices for pontoon boat camping enclosures are pretty limited, so you might not have too many choices available.

TaylorMade offers an enclosure that conceals the bow of your boat, offering complete protection against the elements. It can also fit an inflatable bed or two, so you can comfortable snooze while being protected on deck.

We like this 12006OB Taylor Made Bow Enclosure, Cover, Pontoon Boat Shade & Privacy .

Pontoon Enclosure vs Tent

An enclosure isn't exactly what you would call cheap. They're also pretty hard to find in your boat's specific size. That's why some boating enthusiasts have come up with their own enclosure design ideas that they've paid to get customized. Again, that means you'll have to be ready to spend a pretty penny for the piece of camping gear.

But then again, it could make the camping trip a little more comfortable. If you have trouble sleeping at night with a tent pitched up on the beach and your boat a ways away, then sleeping on your boat under an enclosure might be the way to go.

Other than that, pontoon enclosures are much better at keeping heat in if you're using a heater. So you won't have to worry about sleeping in conditions that might be a little too cold for comfort.

On the other hand, there's the issue of moisture and wind resistance. Most of the enclosure designs you'll find are made from a marine canvas material which isn't waterproof. So if the weather picks up and decides to rain down on your boat, you could expect your enclosure to be soaked through and through, making it impossible to sleep in.

If strong winds start to assail your boat (and they might especially at night), then there's the risk of getting your enclosure ripped out of place and tossed into the water. If anything, the enclosure makes a suitable choice if you're camping in fair weather. Any other weather conditions that risk rain or wind might make the specialized tent a bad idea.

Can You Use a Bimini Top Instead?

Well, no one's going to stop you, that's for sure. While a top cover might not provide the same luxury camping experience that an enclosure would, it can definitely do the job especially if you're only camping for one night.

Of course, you just need to make sure you're camping in good weather since they're also just made of canvas. You might also want to consider slathering on an extra layer of bug repellent since a top won't provide all-around shelter and protection the way a camp enclosure would.

Choosing the Perfect Spot for Pontoon Boat Camping

Now it's time to decide on where to camp. There are loads of destinations around the country that make great choices for families looking to experience the serenity of the great outdoors through pontoon boat camping. So it's really important that you practice some due diligence before you decide on a spot. If there are any camping and boating spots nearby, you could always scout them out in person.

There are a number of websites that index all of the different pontoon boat camping spots around the country, but you could also try Google Earth . Just zero in on lakes and other bodies of water and check for parks and wilderness areas. What's nice about Google Earth is that it gives you a bird's eye view on the property so you can see what it has to offer.

But a word of caution - the software doesn't really provide a very good perspective on the topography of the wilderness areas. So before you decide, you might want to call up the property managers to learn more about the area. Some places might look suitable from up top, but turn out to have steep slopes near the water that make it impossible to pitch up a tent within view of your boat.

Other Considerations When Choosing a Location

pontoon boat camping at night

There's more to making the decision than just the property itself. Here are a few other important considerations you need to make so you can be sure that you're going to the perfect place for a seamless pontoon boat camping getaway:

Rules and Regulations

There's a reason why all of those wilderness parks have remained relatively well-kept and camp-worthy throughout the years. That's because the park management enforces rules and regulations that help protect the land and water. Before you visit, make sure you familiarize yourself with their camp rules.

For starters, some camps have specific guides for fishing while others have rules for cooking, especially since it poses a fire hazard. Some have designated areas for cooking activities on land, which means you can't just fire up the grill anywhere you want.

Of course, rules against making too much noise area also often in place to make sure all campers can enjoy the tranquility of nature. Then there are rules that govern the disposal of trash. You can't just throw your trash or waste from your portable toilet just anywhere you want. All parks have regulations for waste and trash disposal, so see to it that you ask before you discard anything.

Weather Conditions

Rain and wind can cramp your camping style and turn a fun overnight excursion into an absolute disaster. So make sure you're looking into weather forecasts for the next few days. Plus - just because it's warm and sunny in your neck of the woods, doesn't mean it's the same where you're going.

Look into the forecast and see whether your camping plans are actually feasible. As a general rule, you're going to want to scrap a plan and take a rain check if there's the slightest indication of strong winds or rain.

Anchoring Areas

Anchoring areas for your boat is going to be one of the biggest considerations you should make before you decide on a specific location. Some parks and wildlife areas have anchoring coves that puts your boat in the vicinity of other boats. This just makes it easier to keep an eye on all of the people in the park. But then again, it might also take a toll on privacy especially if you were hoping to enjoy a little peace and quiet.

Other than that, you're going to want to inspect the kind of land underneath the water. Not all nature parks have lakes that are pontoon-friendly simply because the land beneath the waves are too jagged and uneven, risking damage to your tubes. Make sure to ask before you haul your pontoon into the park.

Tips for Pontoon Boat Camping

If you're camping on your pontoon boat for the first time, then there might be a lot of guesswork involved. To help streamline the process and guarantee enjoyment and safety, take these handy tips into consideration:

  • Ask about fresh drinking water availability, and pack more than you think you need if there isn't any available at your chosen park.
  • Go through your pre-departure checklist twice or thrice for good measure.
  • Plan all of your meals ahead of time and schedule perishable products first.
  • Pack more boating snacks than you might think you'll need.
  • See to it that all safety essentials are ready especially your life vests
  • Try to get your passengers to wear their life vests any time they're on board even when the boat is near land
  • Don't forget to clean your trash and waste as you go - leave the park the same way you found it.
  • Stay on top of the weather especially since forecasts aren't always 100% guaranteed.
  • Prepare some pontoon games to keep the entertainment going and make the experience more fun for the kids.
  • If you're camping with a large group, always perform a head count.
  • See to it that all of the members of your group are properly briefed on safety protocol for various potential emergencies.
  • Have everyone carry whistles and pocket-friendly flashlights especially if you're camping in a remote area.
  • Take extra caution when lighting your fire or grill to avoid any accidents
  • Never forget to leave behind a float plan with a trusted friend or relative who's staying back home.

A 360-degree approach to customer feedback

Here's a guide on how even the busiest team can build a winning customer feedback process

An idealistic image of the Karakalpak yurt. Courtesy of the Khorezm Archaeological and Ethnographic Expedition, Moscow.

The Karakalpaks inherited the yurt from their Turkic ancestors the essential characteristics of the collapsible trellis-walled felt yurt had already been fully developed before the Karakalpak confederation of tribes emerged in the 15th or 16th centuries somewhere in the vicinity of the lower Syr Darya. The yurt has remained the predominant dwelling for the Karakalpak family up until the early part of the Soviet era. A multitude of different crafts and skills were required to make its various component parts. Not surprisingly it has become the centre piece of a whole branch of Karakalpak culture and folk lore. The yurt has many qualities: portable yet robust; quick to erect and dismantle yet stable and secure; warm in the bitter winters yet cool in the baking summers; affordable for a livestock-breeder yet capable of being used by a Khan. Of course the design of the Turkic yurt has evolved through a process akin to natural selection over almost one and a half thousand years. Each tribal confederation developed its own style of yurt with its own unique features, so although Karakalpaks lived besides Uzbeks, Qazaqs, and Turkmen in the Aral Delta, their individual yurts were immediately discernable.

Yurts are normally associated with nomadic pastoral societies, so it is important that we remember that the Karakalpaks were not nomads. They were traditionally semi-settled, meaning that each clan would have a wintering ground, qıslaw , and a summering ground, jazlaw , the two usually not too far apart from each other. In the winter the yurts would be erected inside a windbreak fence for protection, and another fenced enclosure or qora would be built for the cattle. In the spring they would move their yurts to the summering ground, close to the cultivated areas, allowing their herds to graze on the surrounding pastureland and marshes. Working bullocks would be used to till the land. The awıls of individual clans were often located close to a water channel to which the members of that clan had hereditary rights. In the winter they relied on their agricultural by-products for forage: hay, wheat and millet straw, ju'weri stems (sorghum), and cane. In the autumn the fodder would be harvested and moved to the wintering ground by bullock cart or arba . In the marshy areas, especially in the north of the delta, this fodder would be supplemented by harvesting the local rushes.

A local fisherman with a qayıq full of fish.

"Poor and ill-clothed as these people are, each little gang of fishermen has a canopy or tent of cotton cloth, within which to pass their nights; for without such shelter, sleep, and perhaps, indeed, life, would be impossible, so innumerable are the mosquitoes and so painful are the bites of these insects in this locality."
"Approaching the Karakalpak village, located near the small estuary, supplied with water by the Amu only at high water, we saw bustle; cries were heard from all sides; property and nomad tents were rapidly loaded onto arbas , and everything which was prepared was moved away somewhere in a hurry. Assuming that our unexpected appearance was the reason for this flight, we accelerated our step and sent our leaders to quiet the population. It proved to be, however, that the reason for the bustle was the rapid increase in the level of water in the adjacent estuary, and before our eyes the place occupied by the village was flooded, so that the arbas which had arrived late were being loaded by people already standing in water."

Special Features of the Karakalpak Yurt

Karakalpak yurts have retained their distinctive conical roof shape up to the present day..

However the yurts of the Khorezmian Uzbeks and the southern Kyrgyz also had a conical roof, the uwıqs having a single bend about 45cm from the end, just like the Karakalpak. Of course Kyrgyz yurts were never seen in the Aral Delta, but Uzbek yurts were quite common in the 19th century, especially on the left bank of the Amu Darya. The main difference between the Karakalpak and the Uzbek yurt lies in the kerege trellis wall: Uzbek qanats were made from thicker and rounder poles and had much smaller lattice openings ( ko'z ). Zadykhina reported that an Uzbek yurt could weigh three times as much as a Karakalpak or Qazaq yurt, the reason being that the Uzbeks were settled so their yurts were never moved. In the winter, even though the felts and shiy screens were removed, the frames were often left in situ. Another obvious difference between Karakalpak, Qazaq, and Uzbek yurts is that the frames of the latter were never stained red. When properly decorated, the Karakalpak yurt can be immediately identified from the white tent bands criss-crossing the roof, the shiy screen walls, the jolly pink and brown janbaw suspended like a garland on either side of the door, and the bold rams horn motifs on the weavings flanking each side of the door.

An Uzbek yurt from the Qon'ırat region of the Aral Delta

Types of karakalpak yurt, as karakalpak families built single-storey adobe houses in the early soviet period, the yurt was retained for recreational use and for sleeping in the hot delta summers., materials available for yurt construction, as the aral delta progressively dries out, the areas of marshland become smaller and smaller..

People have lived in this region since antiquity, generally following a similar lifestyle centred on cattle-breeding and fishing. This has led some to assume that there must have been a continuum of occupation within the deltas, the Karakalpaks being descendants of the original Apasiak marsh dwellers who entered the region over two and a half millennia ago. The heterogenic nature of the Karakalpaks and their genetic similarity to the Khorezmian Uzbeks proves that this cannot be so. The explanation for this similarity in lifestyle is quite different the special features of the delta environment determine the domestic economy of the peoples who successfully inhabit it. For example the Kelteminar people, who arrived in the region in the 4th millennium BC, built communal shelters made of poplar which they roofed with reeds. They were hunter-gatherers who lived primarily by fishing and hunting game. Later pastoral inhabitants, such as the Tazabagyab, the Apasiaks, the Jety Asar, the Pechenegs, and the Kerder were all cattle-breeders, who supplemented their diet through fishing, hunting, and simple farming. In the 19th century the Karakalpak Qon'ırat, who lived in the northern part of the delta, were mainly cattle-breeders and fishermen, while the lives of the more southern dwelling On To'rt Urıw principally revolved around irrigated agriculture. Some cattle were raised in stalls using both agriculturally grown and natural fodders, while some were driven to summer pasturelands and were only corralled in the winter.

Unlike the nomadic Turkmen and Qazaqs, the semi-settled Karakalpaks did not specialize in raising sheep until well into the 20th century. Even then there were only two specialist sheep-raising kolxoz , both utilizing land on the fringes of the delta. By contrast, the Turkmen long ago developed sheep farming into a refined art, breeding varieties specifically for the quality of their wool.

A mixed herd of cattle and goats in the central Aral Delta.

Sheep and camels were not suited to the marshy, frequently flooded lands of the delta, while cattle and goats thrived, feeding on the extensive reedbeds and tugay forest scrub. Of course sheep were bred in limited numbers in certain Karakalpak awıls in 1873 the Russian writer A. V. Kaulbars observed Karakalpaks keeping young lambs and kids inside the yurt for protection and observed them seasonally migrating with "fine bulls, cows, calves, goats and sheep...". Herbert Wood saw Karakalpaks moving both cattle and sheep by boat later the same year.

The Karakalpak yurt and its contents were all constructed from these local materials. The components of the yurt frame and the doors were made from local willow and poplar woods, tent bands were woven from either goat hair or cotton, felts were purchased from local Qazaq nomads, and screens and outer doors were made from goat hair and shiy , more latterly, qamıs . Inside the yurt, mats of reed or rushes were spread on the floor and were covered with simple felt mats and quilted cotton ko'rpe . An alasha gilem woven from goat hair or sheeps wool might hang on the kerege to decorate the to'r and goat hair tassels might hang from the roof. Grain might be stored in a hemp sack, while other provisions would be kept in leather, skin, or cotton storage bags, or perhaps hollow gourds, all hung from the keregebas .

Under Chandelier of the Tent Roof Intercession Chapel

Under Chandelier of the Tent Roof Intercession Chapel

View from under the church chandelier on the ceiling interior of the main chapel of St. Basil's Cathedral , the Chapel of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin, with a tent roof structure. This Chapel was one of the earliest architectural experiments that placed two octagons sharing a ribbed roof on top of a square. This started a whole new trend in architecture. However, a tall structure like this with a small base plate is very difficult to heat, and cannot be used by many people praying at the same time, which is one of the reasons why very few churches like this were ever built. Tented roofs are thought to have originated in the Russian North, as they prevented snow from piling up on wooden buildings during long winters. This roof style was widely used in 16th- and 17th-century Russian architecture for churches, although there are examples of this style also in other parts of Europe.

Photo #359 taken on July 16, 2016, during a tour of St. Basil's Cathedral with my dear clients from the USA, Andrew and Karen Green.

Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south.

Bridges in Moscow

Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.

  • Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
  • Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
  • Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
  • Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
  • Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

  • Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
  • Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
  • Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
  • Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
  • Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!

Monasteries and temples

  • Novospassky Monastery
  • Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
  • Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
  • Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
  • Cathedral of Christ the Savior
  • The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
  • The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
  • Novodevichy Convent
  • The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
  • St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
  • St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.
