Whitsunday Sailing Club- 20 degrees SOUTH Bar and Restaurant
Ratings and reviews, location and contact.
Whilst the meals and drinks are relatively standard in comparison to those on the Main Street, the WSC is slightly cheaper with a better view. Their latest offering is table service, however once the meals and drinks were delivered, the staff disappeared. We still had... to pay at the register/bar as before, only this time at the completion of the meal. More
You know it's going to be okay when it's full of locals. Very friendly and helpful staff and also the locals give up a prime table for a couple of 'blow-ins' how good is that? Went here twice, both times for the Seafood Platter. As... I said, it wasn't the best Platter I have eaten, but really.....A Platter for two people, mirrored on each side of the plate, with oysters, bugs, prawns, white fish, squid, (probably calamari), salad, (wilted), chips capers and a bottle of cheap wine, for, wait for it.........$99.00. All this on a balcony with pretty damn good views. I have no hesitation in recommending this place. More
Well what a very big disappoint .. the Seafood Tower ... $99.00 for two gave each person two scallops. one oyster, three prawns, one piece of battered fish, 4 or 5 small strips of calamari and chips. They were out of the one Moreton Bay... Bug so they added a small bowl of mussels. In support the seafood was very good and the staff excellent. We looked forward to a great night out but left very disappointed. Do not recommend the ‘Tower’ it was so cheap for the price. More
Unfortunately we had a disappointing experience last year. My mother had pre-organised a birthday dinner for myself and my partner. Food and service during dinner was extremely slow and the mussels were so salty they were inedible. We were supposed to get a special birthday... desert that had been requested. When we mentioned this, the manager had forgotten to organise it. We were then given the bill and asked to pay. We advised the waiter that payment had been arranged with the manager. After about another 20min wait and lots of staff discussions the waiter came out with credit card details scribbled on a scrap of paper to process the payment. The waiter put in the card details which were written down incorrectly, we then ended up just paying ourselves as we had already waited ages. This was a massive breach of confidentiality to have credit card details that were given 1wk before being transcribed to scrap paper from another source in the office. My mum rang the manager to complain afterwards and she offered a complementary meal, however they did not actually fulfil the offer. Previously we would overlook the overpriced and underwhelming meals to support the local sailing community however this disappointing experience has kept us away since mid last year. More
My wife and I and another couple went to dinner at the Whitsunday Sailing Club on the evening of Saturday the 15th August. We left digusted with the food that was served. We ordered the seafood towwer with our friends also ordering the same. Worst... seafood platter we have ever had - by far. From the time it was served it looked unappetising and no effort had been made to present it. The food tasted as it was served and just lacked any finess. Each tower had one Moreton Bay bug between two. We opted for more calamari rahter than the oysters, we could not find anything extra, our friends had only three oysters between the two of them. The calimari batter tasted of raw flour. The fish looked like it was out of a packet and was soggy. The chips were just crap. At $99 a tower it was underwhelming and tasted terrible. Our night our was almost ruined. Great view but crap food. In regard to Covid safe practices I can guarntee that we were not kept our 1.5 metres distance from other patrons when sitting for dinner. More
Went here for drinks on our first night in Airlie, Hubbie had beer and I had a great pina colada and a glass of the house wine which was not too bad at all. Fantastic views. Went back on our last night and what a... disappointment. They had run out of Hubbie’s beer (Great Northern Crisp) and also out of their house wine so the not so friendly bar waitress just sold a bottle of Mr. Fox sav Blanc to my hubbie, there were only 3 to choose from. Well was it the worst wine I have ever tasted, couldn’t drink it. Horrible! We ordered the crocodile bites which were quite tasty and the mushroom cigars which tasted disgusting, nothing like mushrooms just like eating mouthfuls of chicken seasoning. Awful. Should of stayed going to Airlie Beach Hotel where we know we could get a decent meal and a great bottle of Shaw and Smith. More
We went here a couple of times, once for dinner which was very ordinary and quite disappointing. We ordered the seafood tower only to be told that a lot of the seafood had not turned up in deliveries and they would make it up in... other areas. This did not happen and it turned out to be a crappy dinner. However the drinks were fine and the view is fantastic. No air con in the bar is a let down but there is a/c in the pokie area. We will be back.. always give a 2nd chance More
The establishment is in a great spot but not luxurious. However the staff was very friendly, the service was good and the seafood platter we ordered was well served, fresh lovely seafood choices with great coconut curry mussels. We really enjoyed the pleasant surprise which... was also good value. More
Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We are pleased you enjoyed your experience here with us and hope to see you again soon!
Went to an expensive seafood restaurant the night before but this place cooked everything perfectly and was half the price. The mussels and calamari were perfectly cooked and delicious. Great view, live music and cocktails, can’t ask for more
They have "refurbished" following Cyclone Debbie, but the grotty yachtie image lives on. Clears on the balcony are filthy and covered in mould. Nothing special about the food and the value for money equation is high price/average food. I don't mind paying the higher prices... for good food. I order a green curry chicken. The plate had been warmed but the food was luke warm and I sent it back to the kitchen More
We had a family dinner for 4 ppl here tonight. 1.5hr wait for the food. The kids meal had 4 chicken bites which were tiny. The prawns had no water bowl and no sauce we had to ask for the items that were missing. Much... of the menu was unavailable. Would not recommend. We went on the basis of trip adviser recommendations and it was far from good. More
OK - it’s a club, not a 5 star restaurant. Casual atmosphere, if a little rowdy. Book a table on the deck for dinner - great views. We had the seafood tower, an awesome platter about 30% cheaper than the fancier places in town.
Thanks for your great review. The view from our deck is awesome especially at sunset.
Great view, great food & very friendly staff from the moment we walked in the door. Hubby loved the traditional fish & chips (choice of grilled or battered fish). I had the mussels in Thai coconut sauce. Entree size (about 12 mussels) with the dipping... bread was plenty for me & absolutely delicious. Marcella, our waitress, was cheerful & attentive. Pity it was our last night in Airlie as we would definitely have gone back again another night. More
Thank you for your review Lynden! We are so glad you enjoyed your experience, Marcella is a wonderful staff member we will be sure to pass on your gratitude to her.
This was our favourite watering hole in Airlie. The view from the deck is stunning & the food and drinks are good and reasonably priced. We booked for Melbourne Cup Day here too & had a great time. Caitlin & all the staff were really... friendly & helpful. If you get the chance go on a Wednesday afternoon when they have club yacht racing & they will endeavor to put u on a yacht as volunteer crew. We did it & absolutely loved it. It was one of the highlights of our trip. Great venue any time of the day. Highly recommend. More
Hi Andy! Thanks so much for joining us we are glad you had a wonderful time here Melbourne Cup was a great day! All the best and we look forward to welcoming you again soon Caitlin
We really enjoyed our food here but the best points of the Sailing Club are the staff and location. Thank you heaps guys for catering for 22 of us in one sitting. Car parking is a breeze here which is a huge positive in Airlie... Beach. Kind regards, Arne and Steve More

What is Balearica?
Born from the renowned small group of islands in the western Mediterranean off the coast of Spain.
The word “Balearic” has evolved over the recent decades as a definition of the very essence that is emanating from the special part of the world.
The “White Island” (Ibiza) would centralise this movement with its defining cross-culture of festivity, food and family. Then came the music…. Soundtracking the emotion of the Balearic Islands which can be described as “sunny, melodic, feel-good, house, chill out, disco, Latin, soul and dub” music.
It’s the salt in the sea, it’s the light from the sun, it’s the drink in our hand, the food on your plate. It’s the love in your heart.
It’s Balearica.

Eat, Stay & Play in Airlie Beach, the Heart of the Whitsundays
Check availability, airlie beach is a flourishing queensland coastal town, backpackers and holidaymakers flock from all over the world to soak up the buzz and enjoy access the famous whitsunday islands..
Airlie Beach is known as the ‘heart of the reef’ and the gateway to the Whitsunday islands, one of the world’s best sailing and cruising grounds.
If you’re planning to get amongst the islands, whether on a skipper yourself yacht charter or with a local tour operator, then you’re likely to be bookending your trip with some extra holiday time in Airlie.
To help you get the most out of this thriving coastal town, we’ve pulled together a few local tips on the surrounding area as well as our favourite places to eat, stay and play.
About Airlie Beach
Whether you’re looking for vibrant nightlife and shopping or you’re after a slower-paced, relaxing escape in paradise Queensland’s Airlie Beach will not disappoint.
The town of Airlie is relatively compact, making it a great place to explore on foot. You’ll find plenty of cafes and restaurants, palm trees to read a book under and several rainforest hikes on the outskirts of town.
If you enjoy a music scene, then Airlie Beach is the spot. Airlie hosts some great bars and pubs, which always seem to have live music or DJs playing when the sun goes down. The town attracts some really big international acts, so keep an eye on the gig guide when planning your trip.
Due to its proximity to the Whitsunday Islands , Airlie Beach attracts yachties from all over the world who use the marinas as a pit stop or place to stay for a while. Some “old salts” joke that Airlie is a drinking town with a sailing problem! Honestly, Airlie has a good reputation as a party town and a sailing mecca. But the problem bit is yet to be proven.
There is much more to Airlie than its party reputation, with something on offer for everyone, from upmarket weddings to retirees, to families and backpackers making their way around Australia – Airlie is a town that gives its visitors access to tropical living and the gorgeous Whitsundays in a way that suits them.
The Gateway to the Whitsundays
Most of the Whitsunday Islands are national parks, making them so spectacular because they are pristine. Crystal clear waters, white sandy beaches, rainforests and abundant marine life make sailing the Whitsundays feel like you’re on the set of a movie. And the gateway town to this island paradise is Airlie Beach, with Whitsunday Rent a Yacht’s base at Shute Harbour being the closest mainland port.
Where is Airlie Beach Located?
Located 25 km southeast of Proserpine and 150 km north of Mackay and surrounded by the Conway Ranges National Park, Airlie is just far enough away from a big city to keep its charm. The closest big city is Townsville, 275 km away.
How to get to Airlie Beach in North Queensland
Proserpine Airport is only 30 minutes from Airlie Beach, and it receives all major airlines from Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.
Several airport transfer services are running from the Proserpine Airport and, of course taxis and rental vehicles. We recommend using either Whitsunday 2 Everywhere , Heart of the Reef Shuttles or Airlie Beach Transfers & Tours
Alternatively, flying into Hamilton Island airport is another way to get to Airlie. Resort Link is the islands shuttle service which will take you to the Hamilton Island Marina. You can then catch a stunning ferry ride with Cruise Whitsundays through the island to either Shute Harbour or the Port of Airlie.
When is the best time to go to Airlie Beach?
Airlie Beach is a subtropical environment, so the weather is mostly fine throughout the year.
Winter is one of the best times to visit the Whitsundays , with clear skies and an average daily temperature of 23°C. Many boating enthusiasts say the ultimate time to visit the Whitsundays which is September to October. Spring brings perfect weather and calm seas.
While coinciding with the start of stinger season, November to December are great months to stay in Airlie or charter a yacht away from the crowd and before the wet season. Late summer can get humid, and it’s also the wet season, with temperatures sitting at around 32 degrees. The wet seasons vary, but often it rains in the afternoon and evening with clear skies during the day, making the wet season a great time to travel on a budget and taking advantage of low season rates.
Where to stay
Airlie Beach has a wide range of accommodations for all budgets.
Backpackers will find several hostels in Airlie’s township , with adjoining restaurants offering discounted meals.
Another budget accommodation option is one of the many caravan parks in Cannonvale and Jubilee Pocket. Families will love the award-winning Big 4 caravan park in Cannonvale with its petting zoo, mini-golf, huge waterslide park and heated swimming pool.
If you’re looking for more upmarket accommodation, there are plenty of resort hotel complexes with pools and views over to the islands. Check out Pinnacles Resort and Peppers and the Coral Sea Resort to name a few. Also, along the waterfront, you can find luxury serviced apartments at the Mirage where you’ll hear the sounds of the sea from your room.
Where to eat
There are many amazing places to eat in Airlie, and it’s hard to list the best, but we asked around the office, and these are our top local eating haunts.
Fish D’Vine
Constantly voted one of the best places to eat out in Airlie Beach, Fish D’Vine & Rum Bar serves fresh seafood with a range of local catches on the menu. And if rum is your thing, or even if you aren’t sure but open to dabbling, check out the 500 different types of rum behind the bar and the cocktail menu.
Operating since 2012, you’ll find La Tabella on the esplanade serves delicious Italian food. This is a great spot for people-watching as it sits right on the strip opposite the beach.
Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can dine inside or out for alfresco dining on the Esplanade. And a hot tip for people travelling from the big cities, if you’re looking for a “Melbourne-style coffee”, this is the place.
Northerlies
Northerlies is one of those places that the locals tell you to check out. The open-air venue is lovely and breezy with picturesque views making it feel like you’re at a classy resort with a relaxed atmosphere.
It’s hard to find a bad review about the food, and the craft beers on tap are always a hit. The venue offers musical entertainment on the weekends, games behind the restaurant and a complimentary shuttle bus to and from the town of Airlie.
Whitsunday Sailing Club
The Sailing Club is one of the best views in town. If you want to escape the businesses but stay right in the heart of Airlie Beach, follow the coastal boardwalk west past the esplanade, and you’ll see the sailing club tucked away on the coast.
This is the best spot for a sunset drink as the outlook is west, over the ocean and hilled landscapes. The bistro is open for lunch and dinner and serves both members and visitors.
For anyone wanting a home-cooked meal, a vegetarian/vegan alternative or simply something fresh, have breakfast or lunch at Café One3.
Located on Waterson Way up from the main drag, this little gem of a place is unassumingly great. The owners serve and cook all of the food, taking great pride and care in their menu. You can take a cookbook or magazine off the shelf, play a board game, and spend a morning here knowing you’re eating something to nourish yourself in good company.
Where to Play
If you’re looking for ways to play and enjoy the Whitsundays, we suggest looking at these independent local businesses that operate out of Airlie Beach and Shute Harbour. We have listed a few versatile options, but many more local operators can choose from.
Air Whitsundays
Take a scenic flight over and to the Great Barrier Reef, the islands, Whitehaven and/or land at your own private beach. Air Whitsundays offer a service for bareboat charterers where they can pick you up from your vessel and take you over the island and to the reef.
Marse Charters
Mars charters offer a plethora of services, including water taxis to the island resorts , boating support, dive and location tours, and private boat charters. You can customise a charter with Marse, where “ we supply the private vessel, personal skipper & fuel, you supply anything else to make your day”.
Ocean Rafting

Free things to do in Airlie Beach
Not everything in Airlie Beach comes with a price tag, and you’ll find plenty of things to do around town that won’t blow your budget. Some of the best free things to do around down include:
- Spending days lazing by the Airlie Beach Lagoon in the centre of town. Families will love the sandy beach by the children’s pool and the nearby playground.
- Soaking up the vibes and meeting local store holders at the Saturday morning market
- Taking a hike to Cedar Creek falls or the Honeyeater lookout
- Walking the bicentennial boardwalk along the coast, passing shops, restaurants and the Coral Sea marina
- Explore the Whitsunday Coast . Take a drive up the Whitsunday Coast to Cape Gloucester, picnic at Dingo Beach or have an unforgettable lunch at Montes in Hydeaway Bay

Areas Surrounding Airlie Beach
Technically speaking, the town of Airlie Beach is small. However, due to the proximity of neighbouring suburbs, it feels much bigger. While Airlie is where the action is, it’s worth checking out some of the surrounding suburbs, which are all less than 10 minutes away.
Shute Harbour
We are biased because Shute Harbour is where we live, but we think Shute is the best place on the Whitsundays’ mainland. With stunning views of the islands, a large natural harbour and surrounded by the lush Conway National Park reaching down to the coast – Shute is a tranquil haven.
There’s great fishing off the jetty and several walks in the area. Coral Beach can be accessed from the Shute Harbour residential area. A short 2 km walk through the rainforest, and you’ll find yourself on a secluded beach which is, you guessed it, made of coral.
Shute Harbour is 10-minutes south-east of Airlie Beach
You can take the Bicentennial boardwalk and track north from Airlie up to Cannonvale. It’s a lovely 3km, mostly waterfront walk with great views and no hills! The best thing you can do on your bicentennial walk is to stop off at The Fat Frog Café in Cannonvale to rehydrate and maybe grab a delicious brunch.
Cannonvale has a beautiful sandy beach, a great spot for swimming, barbecuing and exploring. At the end of the beach, you’ll find some rock formations with rock pools to be enjoyed at low tide.
Cannonvale is a 3-minute drive north of Airlie Beach.
Jubilee Pocket
Jubilee Pocket sits snugly inland, just slightly from the Airlie coast. The kids (and parents) will love Jubbilee’s huge fenced playground shaped like a castle, complete with a decent flying fox.
For a local favourite, check out The family-friendly Jubilee Tavern , where you can get classic pub meals for great prices, again with a playground for the kids. They have special nights such as $20 pasta or Parma night, making “The Jubes” a great option for the budget-conscious traveller.
Jubilee Pocket is only a 2-minute drive to the south of Airlie
If you are without a car, you can access the areas surrounding Airlie using the local Whitsunday Transit bus , which stops in all suburbs.
There are so many reasons to travel to Airlie Beach and equally as many ways to enjoy the area. Whether you’re looking for vibrant nightlife and shopping or after a slower-paced, relaxing escape in paradise, this coastal Queensland town will not disappoint.
