My wife and I eat at Scooners at least twice a month. The service is fantastic and the food is always great. Had the best port chop ever, the hand rubbed rib eye fantastic. Try the appetizers huge shrimp cocktail and the walleye egg rolls... very tasty. Best food and service in Helena More

We go to Yacht Basin for dinner a couple times a month in the summer. Music on Fridays. get the pork chop if you can! you will not be disappointed. its enjoyable, waitress is friendly, wine and beer selection is adequate and cold when needed.... Just stop on in, you'll be treated like you belong there! More

My buddy and I were more than relieved to find this place right next to our camp site. The bar, from what we've experienced, is appropriately stocked with the usual hard liquors and domestic beers, as well as a few tasty local brews. One of... the bartenders, Evie, is who we interacted with the most, and she is very capable as well as a great person to chat with. Come to think of it, the place had a sort of Cheers quality, with plenty of friendly locals coming in to down a couple of bottles and rib bruising laughter filling the area. From our experience, we were instantly received with enthusiasm, and that's a great feeling in an unknown area. On the restaurant side, the kitchen is open for only part of the week, which is a slight disappointment, however the typical bar offerings of burgers and fries are present and reasonably priced. They do have some specials on dishes consisting of salmon, cod, halibut and other seafood, however we did not get a chance to try them. Honestly though, the main pull is the chill atmosphere and being able to enjoy a brew while looking out onto the water with a boat lazily floating, here and there. The scenery is in full view with that beautiful Montana sky. All in all, the staff is top notch, and the views are enough to warrant a visit, if the beers and locals aren't enough to convince you. We were touring around on July 4th and stopped here for dinner and drinks. We were a group of 6 adults and sat at a larger table that hadn't been bussed yet. We waited 15 minutes and finally went up to bar and ordered drinks.... Waited 15 more minutes and went up to bar to order 2nd round. 2 gals finally stopped to take the dirty dishes away and said they would be back with menus. Waited another half hour and got another round of drinks at the bar and a bar rag to wipe our dirty table. Waitresses walked by and wouldn't even look at us. 2 more tables came in and they waited on them. We left after 90 minutes and went back to Helena for dinner. Won't be back. More

A great location and the staff is friendly and helpful. They have a million dollar view of Canyon Ferry Lake but it really isn't a restaurant anymore.

My friend and I decided to have an early dinner to beat the rush normally associated with a weekend day night. We had wanted to try this restaurant for some time and thought well now is the right time. We were wrong. First off, the... view of the lake is wonderful, you can't beat it from the extra large, clean windows at this place. We were early enough to secure a table right next to the window. Our server was quick to bring us menus.and drinks. We ordered our food but the server came back to the table and informed us that the only food they had left for us to order besides the appetizer were hamburger. No fish, no shrimp or chicken, just burgers and with the burgers, no lettuce or tomatoes, just onions and pickles. I'm happy we were the type who happened to like cheeseburgers (we got our choice of cheese even though the server got mine wrong) because that's what we got. The appetizer was pretty good, onion rings, batter fried mushrooms, poppers, etc. It was served with Ranch dressing and this raspberry chipotle dressing that was very, very good; that is what we got of it. The raspberry chipotle dressing came in a small cup and if you measured it, it would come out to be about 1/2 teaspoon. When we were served our burgers I asked for some of that dressing for my fries and received the same small cup with about 1/2 teaspoon of the dressing. Just enough to coat the tip of the fry. I think they were afraid I might get some! By the way, the beer battered fries were very tasty and would have been more so if I'd been able to get some of that dressing on them. I don't mean to complain about everything, but when your first 3 choices on the menu aren't available and then you find out the place only has hamburgers, you get a little overly critical. There was no dessert to order, so the view of the lake had to make up for all the restaurant's short comings. I don't know if I'll ever return to this restaurant, unless I have out of town visitors and want to show them the lake and we feel like burgers. It really wasn't worth the ride up there. More

The chicken that is advertised on a large banner outside the restaurant is good, but will take quite a while to prepare as the owner is now the chef. All dinners are made from absolute scratch since they have so few diners now. The picture... of an empty restaurant shown here is what you will find if you decide to go for dinner. More

Canyon Ferry Lake is Montana's third largest body of water. The lake is a popular outdoor destination providing boating, fishing, wildlife habitat, and is nestled against the Big Belt Mountains of the Rocky Mountains. Canyon Ferry Lake has also become a leading ice boat venue for iceboat racing and iceboat world speed record attempts. The former town of Canton lies beneath the lake, having been submerged following construction of the dam.

Canyon Ferry Dam impounds the Missouri River forming the Reservoir. The dam and roughly one-quarter of the reservoir are located in Lewis and Clark County with the remainder of the reservoir located in Broadwater County. Constructed between 1949-1954, the Canyon Ferry Unit facilities include the dam, powerplant and reservoir. The reservoir has 33,500 water surface acres at elevation 3797 feet, extending upstream about 19 miles from the dam to the point the Missouri River enters the reservoir.

Canyon Ferry supports a diverse range of mammalian and avian life including white tail and mule deer, badgers, ground squirrels, raptors, skunk, porcupine, raccoon, weasel, beaver, muskrat, and a number of other small rodents. A host of migratory and non-migratory bird species.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks provides overall fish and wildlife management and enforcement of State hunting, fishing, boating at Canyon Ferry Reservoir. Three concessions have agreements with Reclamation to operate commercial businesses and to provide recreation opportunities for the public at the reservoir. These include Kim’s Marina, Yacht Basin Marina, and Goose Bay Marina. Canyon Ferry also provides a diversity of recreational opportunities through the management of 13 campgrounds and 9 day use areas. The remaining lands are managed by Reclamation and are primarily used for outdoor recreation purposes and open space. The Bureau of Land Management has jurisdiction over lands adjacent to Reclamation lands primarily on the west side of the reservoir and north of Beaver Creek and White Earth Recreation Area. The State of Montana has several parcels of land that border the reservoir area. The U.S. Forest Service manages the nearby Helena National Forest. The diversity of public lands in the area provide for a wealth of recreational opportunities.

Canyon Ferry has become one of Montana's foremost recreation areas because of its proximity to Helena, Great Falls and Butte. The reservoir covers 25 miles and there are 24 Bureau of Reclamation maintained recreation sites around the reservoir. There is east access to the reservoir from US Highway 12 east of Helena or just north of Townsend. Canyon Ferry offers a variety of recreational opportunities including boating, year-round fishing for trout and walleye, camping, sightseeing, picnicking, hunting, waterskiing, nature study, and swimming. Boat access is available at all of the campsites. A number of additional public boat launch areas are located near the dam on the north end and near Townsend on the south end. A Sapphire mine, laundromat, dining, entertainment, cabins, beaches, house boats, showers, and grocery stores are available in the area. Lewis and Clark's passage of the river from the Gates of the Mountains to the three forks takes in the Townsend and Missouri River Valley areas. The upriver passage in the Helena vicinity was maddeningly slow for the Corps of Discovery. On July 22, Sacagawea recognized the white clay banks east of present day Winston, Montana. In her youth, her people visited the banks to gather clay for pigment. Beginning on the south end of Canyon Ferry Reservoir to the Toston Dam, Lewis and Clark set up nine campsites along this short distance in their travels between July 21 and July 25. Those sites were located near present day Canyon Ferry Dam, a site 2 3/4 miles above Beaver Creek, an island below Bedford and a site near Dry Creek south of Townsend. Entries in their journals refer to Onion Island, Crimson Bluffs, York's Island, Fine Bold Springs, and Little Gates of the Mountains. On July 24th, Captain Lewis referred to the 'adjacent mountains' - these are the Big Belts to the east and to the west is the Elkhorns -- now part of the Helena National Forest.
