Designed to take you anywhere you desire in the utmost comfort and luxury, the all new Numarine 45XP just made the world a much smaller place.

EXPLORATION IS A MUST

With a knowledge of twenty years in the nautical business, at heights recognized by all at Numarine, to comprehend the path that the yacht builder founded by Ömer Malaz had to follow. And, thereby to grasp its true vocation and ultimate goal. We now know that it is never too late to do this.

Identified as ideal vessel for isolation and the exploration of distant lands and seas, and in total autonomy from the outside world, the Explorer type has become particularly popular worldwide over the past two decades. For this reason Numarine has decided to concentrate its efforts in the field of research and design for this class of yachts that enables owners and their guests to be absent from the home port for long periods, and able to dedicate themselves to the discovery of secluded and captivating destinations, without the need for frequent refueling.

Numarine 22XP Reviewed

Numarin 22XP

Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, Turkish boatbuilder Numarine started by building planing motoryachts as boutique alternatives to bigger European brands. Those early designs were well-built and nicely engineered opens, hardtop expresses and flybridge yachts. Then, six or seven years ago, company founder Omer Malaz—who has always used his own boats extensively with his family—sensed that his boating tastes were changing. Some of his most valued clients felt the same way.

His first explorer, the all-composite Numarine 26XP, launched in 2018, followed by the steel-composite 32XP and 37XP. Now comes the all-composite range-opener, the Numarine 22XP, which is the smallest offering in the line at 74 feet length overall. Like all Numarines, it has exteriors and interiors by Can Yalman, and naval architecture from Umberto Tagliavini.

If tradition continues, the Numarine 22XP will have an eager audience. The builder has delivered some 160 motoryachts from 52 to 121 feet length overall, with the last 25 builds being XP trawler-explorers. Another 20 are on order into 2024.

Numarin 22XP

The 22XP’s exterior has all the trawler-explorer essentials: a muscular bow, high bulwarks, generous side decks, a near-square transom, big upper-deck overhangs and forward-rake bridge windows. And there are the yacht accouterments of a 170-square-foot foredeck terrace and a 260-square-foot cockpit protected by the full-length, 550-square-foot flybridge. The upper helm area is shielded by an optional hardtop, and there’s a sunbathing area on the pilothouse roof.

Inside, the 22XP is light and bright. The salon is conventionally laid out with flanking sofas aft, and a galley and dining area forward. In all, the salon occupies around 400 square feet of real estate. Views to the sides are splendid, thanks to picture windows to port and starboard. The decor includes blackened-oak veneers, white-satin lacquer and planked soles. The dining table is a sequoia stone.

Up a couple of steps to port, the lower helm is set beneath a chunky-mullioned windshield to port and is addressed by a raised, L-shaped bench seat. This setup keeps driving duties separate from the main guest spaces. There’s an adjacent side-deck door to starboard, providing a quick connection to the outside.

Numarin 22XP

Accommodations belowdecks consist of three or four en suite staterooms. There’s 6-foot-9-inch headroom in the master, which is a full-beam, 215-square-foot space amidships aft. Guest staterooms are a starboard-side double, a head-to-toe twin to port, and a 161-square-foot VIP in the bow with its own staircase from the bridge. In the three-stateroom option, there’s a slightly larger master, but it reduces the great views in the guest staterooms.

Quarters for two crew are accessed via a door in the transom and four steps. This space has a mini mess and utility area, as well as secondary access to the engine room, which, incidentally, is roomy and well engineered. A third crewmember could probably be accommodated with a tweaked layout.

There’s no garage aboard the 22XP; the tender lives on the hydraulic swim platform. The quoted net capacity is 2,200 pounds.

Like the 26XP, the 22XP is available in displacement and planing versions, with the displacement version historically proving most popular. Both versions of the hull are resin-infused and pop from the same split-mold tooling, but with different inserts to adjust bottom shapes. The displacement version includes small bow bulbs.

The first Numarine 22XP launched earlier this year with a planing-performance specification, and two more have since splashed with the displacement powertrains. During my recent factory visit, the fourth and fifth, also in displacement guise and with four-stateroom layouts, were under construction for delivery next year. The sixth ditto was soon to start.

Numarin 22XP

I got aboard Hull No. 3, which has the standard twin 425 hp Cummins diesels whisking out via vee-boxes. The 22XP drives nicely and responds surprisingly quickly and smoothly for a yacht with substantial volume. The good weather gave us little use for the optional CMC Marine electric fin stabilizers. Top speed was around 12.5 knots at the maximum 3,000 rpm, at which the fuel burn was 21 to 22 gph. At 8 knots and 1,900 rpm, fuel burn fell to 5.75 gph. The ultimate range would be 2,000 nautical miles when allowing for a 10 percent reserve, good enough for a typical spring or fall crawl between, say, Newport, Rhode Island, and Miami.

In North America, prices begin at $4.3 million. Hull No. 3, which will cruise the Mediterranean, had an electrohydraulic passerelle, stern docking station, hardtop, extra generator, audiovisual upgrades, watermaker, foredeck Bimini, extra fridge-freezer and washer-dryer. Without question, this Numarine 22XP was ready to travel anywhere.

Faster Option

The planing version of the Numarine 22XP comes with a modified hull form and twin 1,200 hp MAN V-8 diesels, which push the yacht’s top speed up to 25 knots. At a 20-knot fast cruise, the working range is around 360 nautical miles, allowing for a 10 percent reserve. Expect to pay a 10 percent or so premium for this version.

Rich Waters

Just outside the port of Tuzla, on the eastern end of Turkey’s Sea of Marmara, lies a Bond-villain-grade private retreat: Incir Adasi. Also known as Fig Island, it is 10 acres of prime yachting real estate that belongs to one of Turkey’s wealthiest families. Beyond various residences and a pool buried in the trees, it has its own harbor, helipad, quays and pontoons.

The Numarine 22XP aims to emulate the success of her bigger sister the Numarine 26XP. We find out how on a full sea trial…

Numarine is an excellent example of how not to let the past define your future. The Turkish-based company, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, started out building mainstream planing motoryachts and over the course of its first 15 years in business it built a good many of them, around 135 in total between 52-105ft.

However, six or seven years ago its founder, owner and CEO Omer Malaz, a highly experienced yachtsman himself and always one of his own best customers, sensed a mood change among his clients and in the wider world market.

Demand for slower, more efficient, high-volume explorer yachts appeared to be gathering pace and he wanted in, personally and professionally.

Scroll forward to today and Numarine’s portfolio comprises just four craft, all of them throughly modern trawler-explorers from 72-122ft.

The smaller two – the all-new Numarine 22XP featured here and the four-year-old Numarine 26XP – are both built out of GRP and certified Cat B and Cat A respectively.

The larger two – the five-year-old Numarine 32XP and the new-last-year Numarine 37XP – have steel hulls and composite superstructures and are built to ‘Class’.

And in just five short years it has delivered no fewer than 27 of these high volume semi-custom superyachts to loyal owners all over the world – three 22XPs, 17 26XPs, four 32XPs and three 37XPs.

Moreover, as of this summer, the yard has another 18 of them on order with deliveries stretching into 2024.

Numarine 22XP design language

Since it started, Numarine has relied on the same principal creative partners – Umberto Tagliavini for naval architecture and Can Yalman for exterior and interiors – and together they have been responsible for every Numarine to date.

Most recently they have been working on two new additions to the range, a bigger composite model whose precise length remains confidential until an imminent autumn boat show reveal and a new steel/aluminium flagship Numarine 45XP.

Like her older and bigger 26XP sister, the Numarine 22XP is available as either a full-displacement craft or as a faster planing model. The two versions are essentially the same in most respects, save for the drivetrain and changes to the hull form.

numarine-22xp-review-MBY278.test_Numarine_22xp.Numarine_22_XP__0130_final

Above the waterline you can’t tell them apart. The main tooling is the same. The hulls are made from bonding the same two moulded halves together, but they have different keel sections. The displacement hull has a bow-bulb and a rounder keel.

The planing version uses a flatter central keel section and has separately moulded spray rails bonded to the exterior after demoulding.

In displacement guise the necessary grunt comes from a pair of 425hp Cummins diesels, which is good for a maximum speed of around 12.5 knots, but for planing performance those are swapped for twin 1,200hp V8 MANs that push the top end up to more like 25 knots.

numarine-22xp-review-MBY278.test_Numarine_22xp.Numarine_22_XP_4

In terms of style, the Numarine 22XP carries the same design cues as her bigger sisters – high bow, tall bulwarks that run virtually through to the stem, wide flush side-decks well protected by generous upper-deck overhangs, sturdy hardtop, near-square transom, and of course forward-raked bridge windows – de rigueur for any trawler-explorer.

The way the bulwarks are rebated to enhance views from the main saloon and the chunky cap-rails have been Numarine signatures for many years.

Spatial awareness

The 22XP’s outdoor spaces are substantial – 172ft² (16m²) of particularly comfortable and well-protected foredeck terrace, a 258ft² (24m²) cockpit and a whopping 550ft² (51m²) flybridge with partial hardtop protection.

numarine-22xp-review-MBY278.test_Numarine_22xp.Numarine_22_XP_9914_final

That fly is getting on for 55ft (17m) long if you include the massive sunbathing area above the pilothouse. The usual mix of wet-bar, dinette, sun-pads or lounger space is all open to owner preferences.

The standard offer 334ft² (31m²) main saloon has a comfortable lounge area aft that, with aft-deck doors open, merges with the cockpit’s freestanding furniture to provide the flexible AC or no AC choices during the heat of the day.

It has to be said the views are splendid from all those sofas, inside and outside, despite the high bulwarks which vary in height from 36-41in (0.91m-1.04m). There’s an open-plan dining area to starboard adjacent to an enclosed galley to port.

saloon

The latter aboard our test boat was perhaps too formal for mainstream tastes and made to look even more boxy given the rather severe black oak veneers that its interior majors on, but for other owners the galley can be open-plan and lighter veneers chosen.

Tucked up out of the way to port, the bridge is perhaps more geared to out-of-sight crew practicality too. The wheel and instruments are addressed by a high bench seat, which exaggerates the remoteness from the rest of the boat, although the view out is more than adequate to the sides and forward.

There’s a convenient side-deck door immediately to starboard of the bridge console that gives more direct access forward and delivers extra fresh air or perhaps a more discreet passage aft for crew. Plus there’s the option of a day-heads compartment by that door, although the boat we saw didn’t have one.

galley

Boutique service

Numarine projects itself as a boutique yard and, although still mindful of the efficiencies that come with series building as opposed to the less predictable semi-custom arena, it is always prepared to help owners get what they want in terms of furniture and décor, providing it doesn’t mean moving bulkheads or disrupting technical areas.

All the cabins aboard this model are on the lower deck and all have their own ensuite bathrooms and at least 6ft 9in (2.06m) of headroom throughout. There’s a full beam 215ft² (20m²) owner’s cabin aft and a 161ft² (15m²) VIP double cabin in the bow, which also enjoys its own private access via a staircase next to the helm.

owner's cabin

Amidships, between the two main cabins, you can either opt for another big full beam double that’s almost as large as the owner’s cabin but without the big hull windows, or a smaller 129ft² (12m²) double to starboard and a 108ft² (10m²) twin opposite to port.

The latter is quite compact, so some owners may be happy to specify that one as a single. Most owners are likely to go for this four-cabin version and of the handful of boats already sold none have opted for three cabins thus far. There’s also room for a crew cabin aft of the engine-room.

vip cabin

Accessed via a transom door and a four-step descent, it typically provides two beds and a mini-mess/utility space, but Numarine tells us a third bunk could be squeezed in there if needed.

The principal access to the engine-room is from that cabin and it has to be said the engine-room is splendid – everything accessible and plenty of headroom.

Given there’s no garage, tender stowage will be on the 108ft² (10m²) hydraulic platform, which has a quoted capacity of 1,000kg net. Potentially the tender has up to 20ft (6m) of beam to play with.

Driving the Numarine 22XP: Long-range efficiency

The first XP to deliver was a planing model and the next two were displacement versions. We got to test the third, which was fitted with the inline six-cylinder 425hp QSB6.7s Cummins blocks and, as previously mentioned, has a top speed of 12.5-knots.

However, despite being capable of a bit more, we would suggest there is little point ever straying north of 10 knots. Flat out those two engines will burn almost 81 litres of diesel per hour, but drop things down to 10 knots and that consumption more than halves to 39 litres per hour, and at eight knots it almost halves again to 21 litres per hour.

numarine-22xp-review-MBY278.test_Numarine_22xp.Numarine_22_XP_1

The Numarine 22XP features exterior styling by Can Yalman

The latter is the recommended all-day, every-day chug, at which the theoretical range is well over 2,200nm, although with generators running and allowing for a generous reserve up to 1,800nm between fill-ups would be the comfortable figure on which to base passage plans. There’s capacity for 6,000-litres of fuel aboard.

We got to drive this one in June off Tuzla in near-perfect conditions – warm sunshine, virtually no wind and little swell. Suffice to say we can’t vouch for big-seas handling nor indeed the efficiency of the twin electric CMC Stabilis fin-stabilisers, which help counteract roll at anchor as well as low speed cruising.

What we can say about the handling is that the electro-hydraulic steering is remarkably responsive. We didn’t get to see what’s beneath the waterline, but the twin rudders must be substantial to turn her quite so swiftly at such modest speeds.

First and foremost, XPs are good quality designs that offer great value for money, and the new Numarine 22XP makes the formula even more affordable. There’s lots more to Numarine’s XPs that you can’t see. For instance, all the moulding work comes from closed-mould techniques. Indeed, it has been resin-infusing its hulls since the early days and boasts some of the best resources in Turkey. Also the attention given to sound and vibration mitigation aboard is far from typical. For each new model it seeks the advice of Dutch consultancy firm Van Cappellen, whose client list includes many of the world’s very best superyacht builders. The Numarine 22XP is exceptionally quiet, even by trawler yacht standards. If you are considering a navetta/explorer-style craft, this boat is well worth putting on your must-see list.

Numarine 32XP Hull #4

Selling luxury yachts in multiples isn’t the easiest feat, but Numarine just made it look like a cakewalk. The Turkish shipyard has sold not one, but five compact expedition vessels from its popular XP series.

According to the builder, four 85-foot 26XP yachts (hulls # 7, 8, 9 and 10) and one 104-foot 32XP superyacht (hull # 4, pictured above) were snapped up, meaning a whopping 14 ships from the XP series have now been sold.

“These achievements indicate the relevance and popularity of the series,” said founder and chairman of Numarine Omer Malaz. “We are very pleased that five more international customers will be able to experience what high quality and impeccable Numarine style are.”

To recap, both the 26XP and 32XP are billed as modern expedition yachts. They feature efficient hulls and impressive long range—up to 3,000 nautical miles for the 26XP and 4,000 nautical miles for the 32XP—as well spacious interiors which make cruising at length a cinch. The vessels were designed by Can Yalman with naval architecture by Umberto Tagliavini and exude a futuristic feel, with angular windows and vertical bows.

Numarine 26XP Hull #9

Numarine 26XP Hull #9  Kerem Sanliman

A testament to Numarine’s design aesthetic, the newly purchased 26XPs don’t differ much from the script. All four yachts have been built on the same platform and boast identical layouts: an expansive flybridge, a spacious saloon on the main deck and four generous cabins on the lower deck. The only major difference between the boats is how they get their power. One yacht features a semi-displacement hull and is packed with a pair of powerful MAN motors that are capable of delivering a gutsy 1,200 hp each; the other three are equipped with displacement hulls and more economical engines (twin MAN motors of 560-800 hp each).

The new owner of the 32XP, however, was actively involved in shaping the new superyacht . In fact, he even added a jacuzzi to the flybridge—ah, a man after our own heart—something which has never been implemented by Numarine before. Touted as one of “the most impressive superyachts by Numarine to date,” she is the first vessel by the shipyard to feature Hot Lab Design ’s decoration package. The Italian studio worked with the new owner to bring fresh ideas to the interior. The layout sees six guest cabins and one oversized master suite on the upper deck. In addition, the new owner added a pair of compact and cost-effective MAN engines with 800 hp each, which is another first for the shipyard’s flagship.

The recent sales highlight not only the success of the XP series but also Numarine’s willingness to cater to different owners’ needs—a combination that’s clearly working.

The Story Behind Numarine

When numarine stepped into the nautical arena, the brand amazed boating enthusiasts with innovative design, state-of-the-art technology, efficient production and technical excellence, and quickly earning its rightful place in the international yachting community..

This article was featured in the yachting magazine Numarine Insight .

Founded in 2002 by Ömer Malaz, an entrepreneur whose boundless energy and tireless search for perfection have always been an irreplaceable driving force, Numarine is a European builder of explorer-type motor yachts based in the outskirts of Istanbul. With facilities on a total area of 35,000 square meters, Numarine has an astonishing building capacity of 20 vessels per year, spanning 22 to 45 meters.

IN PURSUIT OF PERFECTION

Numarine strives to create motor yachts that provide unrivaled efficiency, comfort and performance when cruising two thirds of the world. This idea led to the establishment of the brand, and to the development of the HT, Fly and the most recent XP series, with a total of 160 yachts built so far.

Ömer Malaz, Founder of Numarine

“From my experience spending leisure time with my family on board motor yachts, I always felt there was something missing, I was always wanting more, and our needs were never fully satisfied,” says Malaz. “Could we go where we wanted, when we wanted? Did we have everything we needed for extended time aboard? Could we entertain in comfort with all the provisions we would need? Was my family safe and comfortable? The answer always came back as not quite. Out of this list of unfulfilled desires, the vision to create the perfect motor yacht came about. Thus, Numarine was born.

REALIZING THE DREAM

To create a company that would stand out and deliver on the mission set down at the outset, exhaustive research led to a set of conclusions that would subsequently be delivered and upheld. Conclusions that formed the core of what Numarine is today. Numarine yachts had to be of the highest quality in order to compete in a saturated marketplace, and so only the best componentry could be used.

Numarine Superyacht at Numarine Shipyard and Production Facility

In order to meet the requirements of efficiency, performance and range, staff and designers had to save weight. So, Numarine took inspiration from the aviation industry and the world of racing, where intelligent material choices and placements translate into extreme savings on weight for added strength and stability. Through techniques such as vacuum infusion and the use of composite materials, as well as steel hulls (for the 32XP, 37XP and 45XP models), Numarine has learned to navigate a broad spectrum of construction techniques in the international nautical arena.

Numarine Shipyard and Production Facility

Numarine outfits yachts with an abundance of amenities and convenience features as standard, offering clients the ability to customize and delivering on their exacting requirements. With a mission set out and its delivery achievable, Numarine created a purpose-built facility, refined the latest technological manufacturing techniques, assembled a team of the best craftsmen, engineers and designers, and formed partnerships with the industry’s leading vendors. Uncompromising in attention to detail, impeccability of workmanship and choice of materials, every Numarine yacht is a pleasure to own.

Out of this list of unfulfilled desires, the vision to create the perfect motor yacht came about, and thus Numarine was born.

Numarine will take part in the upcoming Dubai International Boat Show 2024 with the 32XP superyacht M/Y MASHA

For the first time ever Numarine will display one of its explorers in the UAE

Numarine is strengthening its foothold in the Middle East by showcasing the 32XP superyacht at the 30th edition of the Dubai International Boat Show (DIBS), scheduled to take place in the state-of-the-art Dubai Harbour from February 28 to March 3, 2024. This marks the first time the company introduces one of its oceangoing explorers to the Persian Gulf.

Numarine’s founder and chairman, Ömer Malaz, commented, “This is a significant milestone for our company. We believe the Middle East offers tremendous potential for yachting experiences. The region has already established itself as an international hub for tourism, finance, and aviation, and there is every reason for it to become a prominent marine centre as well. Our expedition yachts are particularly well-suited, allowing owners to easily explore the Gulf region, as well as destinations like the Maldives, Seychelles, Mauritius, Madagascar, and other enchanting places in the Indian Ocean due to their impressive range.”

The Middle East continues to emerge as a crucial focal point for yacht owners, a trend underscored by Numarine's own success.

The company has already secured sales for two expedition superyachts destined for clients in the Middle East, with the first set for delivery in a few weeks and the second scheduled for 2025.

At DIBS, Numarine will present MASHA, the fourth hull in the successful 32XP range. This model boasts generous internal living spaces, facilitated by its steel hull construction and GRP superstructure. These features enable both the shipyard and owners to craft unique layouts internally and customise external spaces. The exterior design is the work of Can Yalman, the renowned design partner of Numarine. The yacht is special also because she features the interior decoration package that was created by Milan-based Hot Lab studio (part of the Viken Group).

With a displacement of just under 300 GT, the maximum limit for its category, the 32XP affirms its superiority in terms of volume. The main deck of the 32XP features a spacious cockpit. The salon leads to a lobby housing a gym and a forward master cabin with separate bathrooms. A fully functional kitchen and crew quarters ensure top-notch service. Below the deck, there are four guest cabins. The upper deck boasts a 40-square-metre owner’s cabin with its own terrace. The flybridge offers 60 square metres of entertainment space, complete with couches, a dining table, sunpad areas, a bar, and a helm station.

In terms of performance, the 32-metre superyacht, a result of collaboration between the yard and its long-standing partner naval architect Umberto Tagliavini, boasts an efficient displacement hull, allowing for a top speed of 14 knots, a cruise speed of 12 knots, and an impressive 4,000nm range at an economical speed of 8 knots.

During the design of the 32XP, Numarine, with the assistance of its longstanding partner Silent Line, paid meticulous attention to reducing all noise and vibration sources. The superyacht has not only surpassed DNV Class 1 Comfort Class Requirements (which are more stringent than RINA) but has also achieved comfort levels comparable to those of a high-quality 50-metre megayacht in a 32-metre superyacht.

$200k price drop on 52-knot 25m Pershing motor yacht African Wild Dog

A $200,000 price drop has been announced on the 25-metre fast motor yacht African Wild Dog listed with Bob Friscia at Ocean Independence .

Built of carbon fibre composite in 2018 in Italy by Pershing , the 52-knot 82 VHP (Very High Performance) model was designed by Fulvio De Simoni with naval architecture by Ferretti Engineering Department.

Her contemporary accommodation is for a party of up to seven in three cabins, comprising an owner's suite, a VIP double and a twin with Pullman berth. There are quarters for a crew of three.

She boasts a lower-deck media room and an open-plan saloon with a sit-up bar forward, immediately aft of the triple helm station seats, that form a focal point. The broker described African Wild Dog as "the perfect marriage between high-speed thrills, graceful aesthetics and opulent comfort".

Up on the sundeck is another helmstation, with views over the foredeck lounging and sunbathing areas, and a giant sunpad aft. On the aft deck is another large multi-person sunpad.

Powered by twin 2,638hp MTU engines – which are under extended warranty until March 2025 - the 108GT yacht has a top speed of 52 knots and a cruising speed of 40 knots.

Lying in Fort Lauderdale, USA, African Wild Dog is now asking $3,700,000.

Ukraine war latest: Safety 'deteriorating' at Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant after drone strike

Zaporizhzhia is the largest nuclear facility in Europe and has been occupied by Russian soldiers since the early stages of its war with Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has praised the UK's "true leadership" in its support of Ukraine - but warned "the situation has slowed down recently" as it pushes into Russian territory.

In his nightly video address, he stressed it is "crucial that our partners remove barriers that hinder us from weakening Russian positions in the way this war demands".

He promised to "intensify our diplomatic efforts" amid the Kursk incursion, naming the UK,  US, and France as key targets.

It comes amid speculation Germany is planning to halve its Ukrainian aid budget next year.

Mr Zelenskyy finished his X post by saying: "Throughout this war, we've seen the UK demonstrate true leadership—in arms, politics, and support for Ukrainian society.

"This has saved thousands of lives, reflecting the strength of the UK."

But he added: "Unfortunately, the situation has slowed down recently.

"We will discuss how to fix this because long-range capabilities are vital for us. The whole world sees how effective Ukrainians are—how our entire nation defends its independence."

In a Sunday Express interview, Defence Secretary John Healey endorsed Ukraine using British weapons inside Russia - as long as it keeps within international law.

The UK "should be proud" British weapons are being used by Ukraine – including inside Russia, the defence secretary has said.

John Healey told the Sunday Express that he is happy for weapons to be used over the Russian border, providing international law is maintained.

He told the newspaper: "Let me be very clear: under Article 51 of the UN Charter, Ukraine has a clear right of self-defence against Russia's illegal attacks.

"Providing international law is followed, that does not rule out operations inside Russia."

He added: "We should be proud of Britain's support for Ukraine's struggle.

"We should be proud that British-donated equipment, in the hands of brave Ukrainians on the front line, is helping them to defend their country and push back Putin."

Ukrainian troops crossed into the Russian border region of Kursk on 6 August in a bid to divert the Kremlin's military focus away from the frontline in Ukraine.

On Thursday, Ukrainian forces claimed to have seized the town of Sudzha, six miles from the border.

The UK is one of Ukraine's leading military donors, providing lethal and non-lethal weaponry, including tanks, air defence systems, and long-range precision strike missiles.

Safety at Ukraine's occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is deteriorating after a drone strike on the road surrounding it, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Saturday.

Earlier today, the IAEA Support and Assistance Mission to Zaporizhzhia (ISAMZ) team was informed that an explosive carried by a drone detonated just outside the plant's protected area.

A visit by the team found no casualties and no damage to nuclear equipment - but the surrounding road and gates were impacted.

The impact site was close to the essential cooling water sprinkler ponds and about 100m from the Dniprovska power line, the only remaining 750-kilovolt line providing a power supply to the plant, the team said.

IAEA Director General Grossi commented: "Yet again we see an escalation of the nuclear safety and security dangers facing the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

"I remain extremely concerned and reiterate my call for maximum restraint from all sides and for strict observance of the five concrete principles established for the protection of the plant."

The ISAMZ team has reported heightened military activity in the area over the past week.

Germany plans to halve its military aid to Ukraine in 2025, according to a parliamentary source.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz is instead planning to use money generated from frozen Russian assets in Germany to support Ukraine's war against Russia, the source told AFP on Saturday.

It is not planning "any additional aid" to the $4.4bn (£3.4bn) already set aside in next year’s budget, the source added.

But Germany's foreign ministry denied the claims on X on Saturday.

"Rumours that Germany stops its support to #Ukraine are wrong," a post read.

"We stand with Ukraine & will support Ukraine as long as it takes.

"Since the beginning of Russia's war of aggression, Germany has supported Ukraine with €34 billion.

"This year, we will provide military aid north of €7 billion."

Germany is Ukraine's second biggest military donor, providing £6.8bn in aid this year.

The leader of Russia's Chechnya region has appeared in a video threatening to send a Telsa into Ukraine – while praising Elon Musk.

Ramzan Kadyrov, who is known for extravagant publicity stunts, posted the video of himself on Telegram.

It shows him driving a Tesla Cybertruck, seemingly with a machine gun strapped to the roof.

He says he will send the vehicle into the Ukrainian conflict zone, before praising the company's chief executive Elon Musk.

Mr Kadyrov describes Musk as the "strongest genius of modern times", inviting him to Chechnya.

"We... await your future products that will help us finish the special military operation," referring to the Kremlin’s term for the Ukraine war.

Two Italian journalists who angered Moscow with a TV report from Ukrainian-controlled parts of Kursk will return to Italy for their own safety, according to Italian state broadcaster RAI.

Russia's foreign ministry summoned Italy's ambassador yesterday over what it called an "illegal border crossing" by the RAI crew.

The interior ministry was planning to open criminal cases against the two journalists, posted Baza, a Telegram channel close to Russian law enforcement.

"The company decided to make journalist Stefania Battistini and cameraman Simone Traini return temporarily to Italy, solely to ensure personal safety and security," RAI said.

"Journalism is not a crime. The Moscow authorities' possibility of putting Stefania Battistini and Simone Traini on trial is unacceptable. Reporting is not done with prior authorisations," RAI union Usigrai and Italy's national press union FNSI said in a joint statement.

A four-person RAI crew, working under Ukrainian military escort, produced the first foreign media report from the war-damaged Russian town of Sudzha last week.

Italy's foreign ministry said its ambassador Cecilia Piccioni had explained to the Russian authorities that RAI and its news teams acted independently and autonomously.

The two reporters are scheduled to fly back to the northern Italian city of Milan tomorrow.

Security and defence correspondent Deborah Haynes was at the site of a missile strike in Sumy city this morning.

Residents described being awoken by a huge explosion.

One said the blinds across her window saved her from glass shattering as a result of the blast.

Washington appears to be effectively blocking the UK from permitting Kyiv to fire Storm Shadow missiles inside Russia, The Times reports.

The UK has been waiting for US approval for over a month, a government source said.

The British government wants Ukraine to use the weapons as they wish, but consensus is required between the US, France and another unnamed NATO country.

A government source stressed to The Times that the UK was not blaming the US for any delay.

Britain was the first country to publicly supply Kyiv with long-range cruise missiles.

While it has permitted the use of British tanks and other weapons on Russian soil, restrictions remain on the missiles.

A British source previously said Ukrainian troops are thought to have used British Challenger 2 tanks inside Kursk.

Ukraine's success in Kursk has shown the West it does not need to take an incremental approach to Russia, says Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Goncharenko.

Kyiv's allies need to approve the use of Western weapons to strike deep inside its territory, he said.

He added the incremental style of Western support has only drawn out the war.

"Watch the Russian reaction. For more than one week, for the first time since the Second World War, Russian territory is occupied. And what is the reaction? Just some mumbling from Putin," said Mr Goncharenko.

"I hope that this will help us to convince our allies that Ukraine is capable of big successes and to win this war, so finally our hands will be untied," he said, adding Ukraine needs permission to use the UK's Storm Shadow missiles deep into Russian territory.

"I think this incremental style is very, very bad."

He continued: "Russia only understands one language, the language of force, and Ukraine has shown it now."

Kyiv has dismissed "insane Russian propaganda" alleging that Ukraine plans to carry out nuclear attacks.

Moscow has accused Ukraine - without providing any evidence - of gearing up to attack Kursk nuclear power plant and developing a "dirty bomb"; an explosive used to scatter radioactive waste.

The Russian defence ministry said Ukraine would blame Moscow and that it would respond harshly in the event of such an attack.

The allegations were "dangerous lies" and Ukraine officially denies them, said Ukrainian foreign office spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi.

"We are witnessing another surge of insane Russian propaganda."

He continued: "Ukraine has neither the intention nor the ability to carry out any such actions. Russia must stop spreading dangerous lies.

"Ukraine has always been and remains a loyal member of the NPT (Non-proliferation treaty).

"We do not have any 'dirty bombs' and do not plan to acquire them."

Vladimir Putin made similar allegations shortly before launching the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Then, in March the same year, Moscow alleged Ukraine was going to use a dirty bomb. Neither claims were borne out.

Russia also alleged a Ukrainian drone dropped an explosive charge on a road outside the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine this morning.

Its Russian management posted an image to Telegram showing several men in IAEA jackets surrounding a dent in the road the width and depth of a pothole.

Both Russia and Ukraine have accused eachother of close calls with drones and rockets at the power plant since Russia occupied it.
