If your family is looking for a great movie to watch together this Halloween season, 1995’s Casper is a great choice. The story of a friendly ghost who falls in love with a human girl is a touching story full of frights to put you in the mood for the season. Here’s how you can stream Casper this Halloween season.

There’s nothing like a good Halloween movie to watch with the whole family and if you have little kids who aren’t ready for full-fledged horror movies yet, then Casper is a great choice. There are some thematic elements that might frighten very little kids, but for the most part, the whole family can enjoy Casper together.

Casper follows a benevolent, friendly ghost who lives peacefully in a house in Maine. An investigator (Bill Pullman) arrives at the house to communicate with Casper and he brings his daughter (Christina Ricci). Casper and Kat form a friendship and become very close, but their friendship is jeopardized by Casper’s evil uncles who delight in causing mayhem and trouble wherever they go.

Based on the popular Casper the Friendly Ghost cartoon that ran in theaters between 1945 and 1959. The story of a friendly ghost who only wanted to meet people and make friends quickly captured the imaginations of young and old people alike, spawning several animated features. The live-action movie also spawned sequels including 1998’s Casper Meets Wendy .

Where to stream Casper this Halloween (2021)

Casper isn’t streaming on Netflix or Hulu this Halloween, but it’s available to rent or buy through a number of services such as Vudu, Google Play, YouTube TV, Amazon and Apple TV.

Given that the beloved Halloween classic isn’t streaming, there’s a very good chance you’ll also find the movie on television at some point in October. In fact, you can catch it on Freeform on Oct. 18 and on Halloween night!

Screen Rant

How did casper the ghost die.

Casper explored parts of the Friendly Ghost's backstory, including how he died and why he decided to be a ghost instead of crossing over.

  • Casper's backstory adds a layer of tragedy to his character, exploring his death and why he became a ghost.
  • The movie Casper mixed live-action with CGI and became the first to feature a fully CGI character in a lead role.
  • Casper developed a strong friendship with Kat, and through his memory, it was revealed that he died from pneumonia at the age of 12.

Casper revealed parts of the Friendly Ghost’s backstory, including how he died, adding a layer of tragedy to his story. The adventures of Casper the Friendly Ghost started in a series of cartoons, and in 1995, he made the jump to the big screen in Casper , directed by Brad Silberling. Casper mixed live-action with CGI in order to bring the title ghost and his uncles, the Ghostly Trio , to life, becoming the first movie to have a fully CGI character in the lead role. Although Casper stayed true to the character’s sweetness and ideas against scaring humans, it also went on a darker path by exploring parts of Casper’s backstory.

Casper follows Dr. James Harvey (Bill Pullman) and his daughter Kat (Christina Ricci) , who are called by Carrigan Crittenden (Cathy Moriarty) to get rid of the ghosts living in Whipstaff Manor, which she inherited from her father. Dr. Harvey and Kat soon befriend the Ghostly Trio and Casper, and team up to stop Carrigan from kicking them out and stealing Casper’s treasure. Casper addressed themes of grief and death, not just through Dr. Harvey’s search for the ghost of his wife, Amelia, but also through Casper’s backstory, as it explains what happened that led him to become a ghost.

What Happened To Kat’s Mom In Casper

Casper died from pneumonia at the age of 12.

Kat and Casper quickly developed a strong friendship and had moments where they opened up to each other about the tragedies in their lives. However, when Kat asked him about what his life was like, Casper said he couldn’t remember anything before becoming a ghost. One day, Kat found Casper’s toys and other belongings in the attic and set them up for him. This unblocked Casper’s memory, but moments later, after giving Kat his mother’s old wedding gown to wear at her Halloween party, Casper found his old sled, which triggered the memory of how he died and why he didn’t cross over and became a ghost.

Casper told Kat that he begged his father to get him the sled, and one morning, he came down for breakfast and found the sled. Casper then spent the whole day sledding, and though his father told him to stop and go back inside, Casper didn’t care as he was having a lot of fun. Casper continued playing outside for hours until it got dark and colder. As a result, Casper got sick, and as revealed in an old newspaper, Casper died of pneumonia when he was just 12 years old.

Unable to cope with the death of his son, Casper’s father came up with the Lazarus, a machine through which he hoped to bring his son back to life. Casper’s father claimed to be haunted by the ghost of his son, which wasn't a lie as Casper decided to stay with his father, but his father was sent to a mental institution, where he died. Casper couldn’t cross over after that, so he stayed in his house as a ghost.

Who Plays The Human Version Of Casper The Ghost

Casper was played by two different actors in his first live-action movie. Malachi Pearson voiced Casper the ghost, but when Kat’s mom granted Casper his wish of coming back to life (though only until 10 o’clock), human Casper was played by another actor. Devon Sawa played human Casper , and although his role was very brief, it was enough to establish him as a teen heartthrob. Sawa’s popularity grew even more after starring in the horror movie Final Destination , after which he played Owen Elliot/Sam Matthews in the TV series Nikita and various roles in the TV series Chucky .

Ghost Tours and Other Spooky Experiences in Casper

Although our mountain town got its name far before Casper the Friendly Ghost got his, that's usually the first association visitors make with Casper, Wyoming. You may be surprised to learn that there's actually no relation to us and ol' Casper. But, with that being said, here in the Oil City we are known for friendly locals, Midwestern hospitality and always, always holding the door open for strangers at the grocery store. So we will stand behind the accidental correlation between the two!

However, the more you dive into the history of Central Wyoming the more you will realize that we may have more skeletons in our closet than we put on. From the stories and struggles of those who came before us to the historic buildings that hold their own goosebumps, Casper is a perfect destination for thrill-seekers and ghost chasers.

To rally around spooky season in the heart of Wyoming, we're recommending ghost tours and other spooky experiences to indulge in below:

Take a Ghost Tour

With so much history in this ol' Western town, we're not one bit surprised when things tend to go bump in the night. If you're looking for a ghost tour sure to fright, look no further than the Fort Caspar Ghost Tours. Let the Caspar Area Paranormal Society guide you through this reconstructed 1865 military post where abandoned quarters, dark halls and rickety buildings await you. From the Native Americans who initially called the land home before the pioneers passed through on their way out West to the U.S. Army soldiers who dwelled here, Fort Caspar has plenty of stories to tell and ghosts of the past to encounter.

Hour-long tours will be held on October 21, 22, 29 and 20, with tours leaving every 20 minutes. Tickets can be purchased first come, first serve at the Fort Caspar Museum or over the phone at 307-235-8462.

Neal Forsling

Get Witchy at Crimson Dawn

When the morning fog lingers on the peaks of Casper Mountain and the stars light up an October sky, we know spooky season is upon us here in Central Wyoming. Forgo the pumpkin carvings and apple cider tastings in town and define your own haunted experience with a slow drive up Casper Mountain to Crimson Dawn  Park & Museum.

Here you will be beckoned by vast, mountain landscapes, warm cabins and the enchanted world of Neal Forsling’s creative and inspirational legacy. You see, back in the late 1920s, Neal Forsling and her two daughters, Mary and Jean, used to dwell in the log cabin alone together which now stands as the Crimson Dawn Museum. The log cabin and the surrounding land play host to the momentos of their life on Casper Mountain so long ago.

However, Mrs. Forsling was not your average mountain mama. She was a painter, a writer and a storyteller who's art was rooted in mythology. Neal found inspiration amongst our beloved, Western landscapes, brought them to life with her own dreams and visions and shared them with her daughters. Her most iconic story includes 7 Crimson Dawn witches and other spiritual characters who used to come out and celebrate summer solstice with her and her daughters.

Although the museum is closed during winter months (and high time for Crimson Dawn is their summer solstice event every June), the Park makes for the perfect, spooky getaway in our mountain town. Walk alongside the old log cabin down winding mountain roads past old graveyards, and, oh yeah, watch out for the witches - they may just put a spell on you! For more information visit Crimson Dawn Park's website here .

P.S. Love the imagination of Neal Forsling? Casper has more where that came from. The  art exhibit "Through the Artist's Eyes" showcasing her collection is now showing at The Nicolaysen Art Museum through December 28th!

Old sodas, shakes and malts as well as ice cream and cheese cakes served at the historical Rialto building in Downtown Casper

Visit the Haunted Rialto Soda Fountain

In 1928, the Rialto building was built in historic downtown Casper where it was a cigar and soda shop until the 40s. The corner building, that is also home to one of Casper's oldest movie theaters, has always been known by locals to be haunted. However, in 2017 when the Rialto Soda Fountain undertook new ownership, the decades of stories and rumors stood true.

Rob Piotter, his wife and his staff noticed strange activity in the old shop right away. Objects moved without reason, corners of the building carried their own unexplained, cold draft and Piotter had many clients come in asking about "the old man smoking behind the bar". He swears that this lingering soul is the previous owner.

Believe it or not? Stop in the Rialto Soda Fountain yourself and see if something stirs within you... or around you.

May these spooky Casper experiences inspire your next haunt! Did we miss anything scary and noteworthy worth mentioning? Let us know, and we will be sure to add it to the list!

How to start White Ghost pumpkin seeds

Here’s a step-by-step guide on starting White Ghost pumpkins:

  • Choose the right time: White Ghost pumpkins are typically planted in late spring or early summer when the soil temperature has reached around 60°F (15°C). Make sure all chances of frost have passed before planting.
  • Select a suitable location: White Ghost pumpkins require full sun, so choose a spot in your garden that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. The soil should be well-draining and rich in organic matter.
  • Prepare the soil: Before planting, prepare the soil by removing any weeds or debris. Loosen the soil to a depth of about 12 inches (30 cm) and mix in compost or well-rotted manure to improve fertility and drainage.
  • Start seeds indoors (optional): If you have a shorter growing season or want to get a head start, you can start White Ghost pumpkin seeds indoors about 2-3 weeks before the last expected frost date. Plant the seeds in biodegradable pots filled with seed-starting mix, keeping them moist and warm (around 70°F or 21°C) until they germinate.
  • Direct sowing: White Ghost pumpkins can also be directly sown into the garden. Once the soil has warmed up, plant the seeds about 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep and 3-4 feet (0.9-1.2 meters) apart. Create small mounds or hills to improve drainage and help warm the soil.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply once or twice a week, providing about 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) of water each time. Avoid overhead watering to prevent the spread of diseases.
  • Fertilization: White Ghost pumpkins are heavy feeders. Apply a balanced organic fertilizer or compost at planting time and side-dress with additional fertilizer every 3-4 weeks throughout the growing season. Follow the package instructions for proper application rates.
  • Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch around the plants to help retain moisture, suppress weed growth, and maintain a more even soil temperature. This can be straw, shredded leaves, or grass clippings.
  • Pest and disease control: Monitor your plants regularly for common pumpkin pests like aphids, squash bugs, and cucumber beetles. Use organic pest control methods such as handpicking, neem oil, or insecticidal soap if necessary. To prevent diseases, avoid overhead watering, provide good air circulation, and practice crop rotation.
  • Harvesting: White Ghost pumpkins are ready for harvest when the rinds are hard and fully colored. The vines will start to wither, and the stems will dry out. Cut the pumpkins from the vine, leaving a few inches of stem attached. Cure them in a warm, dry place for about 10-14 days to harden the skin and improve storage life.

By following these steps, you should be able to successfully grow White Ghost pumpkins and enjoy their unique and spooky appearance in your garden or for Halloween decorations. Happy gardening!

When to plant White Ghost pumpkins outdoors

The ideal time to plant White Ghost pumpkins is in late spring or early summer, after the last frost has passed and the soil temperature has reached at least 60°F (15°C). This is typically around May or June in most regions. Planting at the right time ensures that the seeds will germinate quickly and the plants will have enough time to grow and mature before the first frost in the fall.

Growing & care guide

White Ghost pumpkins, also known as albino pumpkins, are a unique and fascinating variety to grow in your garden. These pumpkins have a striking white color and can add a touch of elegance to your fall decorations. To ensure successful growth and a bountiful harvest, here are some best practices for caring for White Ghost pumpkins:

  • Location: Choose a sunny spot in your garden that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight each day. Pumpkins thrive in warm temperatures, so ensure the location is well-drained and protected from strong winds.
  • Soil Preparation: Prepare the soil by removing any weeds or debris. White Ghost pumpkins prefer well-draining soil with a pH level between 6.0 and 7.5. Incorporate organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure, to improve soil fertility and drainage.
  • Planting: Sow White Ghost pumpkin seeds directly into the garden after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed up. Plant the seeds about 1 inch deep and 2-3 feet apart, allowing enough space for the vines to spread. You can also start the seeds indoors 2-3 weeks before the last frost date and transplant them outdoors once the soil is warm.
  • Watering: Pumpkins require consistent moisture, especially during the flowering and fruiting stages. Water deeply, providing about 1-2 inches of water per week. Avoid overhead watering, as wet foliage can promote diseases. Instead, water at the base of the plants to keep the leaves dry.
  • Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as straw or wood chips, around the base of the plants. Mulching helps retain soil moisture, suppresses weed growth, and regulates soil temperature. It also prevents the pumpkins from coming into direct contact with the soil, reducing the risk of rot.
  • Fertilization: White Ghost pumpkins benefit from regular feeding. Before planting, incorporate a balanced organic fertilizer into the soil. Once the plants have established, side-dress them with compost or a nitrogen-rich fertilizer every 3-4 weeks. Avoid excessive nitrogen, as it can result in lush foliage but fewer fruits.
  • Pollination: Pumpkins require pollination for fruit set. Bees and other pollinators are attracted to the bright yellow flowers that appear on the vines. To encourage pollination, avoid using pesticides that may harm beneficial insects. You can also hand-pollinate by transferring pollen from the male flowers to the female flowers using a small brush or cotton swab.
  • Pest and Disease Control: White Ghost pumpkins are susceptible to common pumpkin pests and diseases, such as squash bugs, powdery mildew, and vine borers. Monitor your plants regularly and take appropriate measures to control pests and diseases, such as using organic insecticides or practicing crop rotation.
  • Harvesting: White Ghost pumpkins are ready for harvest when the skin has hardened and turned completely white. The stem should be dry and brown. Cut the pumpkins from the vine, leaving about 2-3 inches of stem attached. Handle them carefully to avoid bruising or damaging the skin.

By following these best practices, you can enjoy a successful White Ghost pumpkin harvest and create a stunning display for your fall festivities. Happy gardening!

Harvesting guide

White Ghost pumpkins, also known as Casper pumpkins, are a popular variety known for their unique white color and spooky appearance. Harvesting these pumpkins at the right time is crucial to ensure they reach their full potential. Here’s a guide on when and how to harvest White Ghost pumpkins:

  • Timing: White Ghost pumpkins typically take around 90 to 110 days to mature from the time of planting. The exact timing may vary depending on growing conditions and the specific variety you are cultivating. It’s essential to keep track of the planting date to estimate the harvest time accurately.
  • Color and Texture: As White Ghost pumpkins mature, they change from a pale green or yellowish color to a solid white. The skin becomes hard and tough, indicating that the pumpkin is ready for harvest. Gently tap the pumpkin with your knuckles; if it sounds hollow, it’s a good sign that it’s ripe.
  • Vine Drying: Another indicator that White Ghost pumpkins are ready for harvest is when the vines start to dry out and wither. As the pumpkins mature, the vines will naturally start to die back. This is a natural process and signifies that the pumpkins have reached their full growth potential.
  • Size and Weight: White Ghost pumpkins can vary in size, but they generally reach a diameter of 8 to 12 inches. When harvesting, consider the weight of the pumpkin as well. A mature White Ghost pumpkin should feel heavy for its size, indicating that it’s filled with flesh and seeds.
  • Harvesting Technique: To harvest White Ghost pumpkins, use a sharp knife or pruning shears to cut the stem about 2 to 3 inches above the pumpkin. Leave a portion of the stem attached to the pumpkin, as this helps prolong its shelf life. Avoid pulling or twisting the pumpkin off the vine, as this can damage the fruit or the plant.
  • Curing and Storage: After harvesting, it’s essential to cure the White Ghost pumpkins to enhance their flavor and extend their shelf life. Place them in a warm, dry area with good air circulation for about 10 to 14 days. This allows the skin to harden further and any minor cuts or bruises to heal. Once cured, store the pumpkins in a cool, dry place with temperatures around 50 to 55°F (10 to 13°C) and moderate humidity.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure a successful harvest of White Ghost pumpkins. Enjoy their spooky beauty and use them for decorative purposes or in various culinary creations.

White (Ghost) Pumpkins: Care, Types, and Growing Tips

All right, I’ll ‘fess up…

I like a good shortcut. Something that can save me time and energy is guaranteed to make me smile.

Take for example the white ghost pumpkin. White pumpkins can be made into a jack o’lantern with a ghostly twist using a few strokes of a knife or paintbrush, then turned into a creepy snowman after Halloween is over, and then baked into a pie just in time for the next holiday.

Ghost pumpkins can add a splash of brightness to your pumpkin patch. The artists in your neighborhood will itch to paint those blank canvases, so plant a lot of these white orbs if you enjoy driving those neighbors nuts, er, I mean, giving these pumpkins as gifts.

Read on for how to make these little ghosts thrive.

History of the White Pumpkin

Pumpkins, also known as winter squash, have come in many colors for as long as there have been pumpkins.

How long? Some pumpkin seeds dating back somewhere between 7000 and 5500 B.C. were discovered in Mexico, making North America the pumpkin’s native land.

Not until recently (around 2005) have the white pumpkins been developed for their own charm and oddity, whereas before they’d be a random shade showing up amongst the orange and green squash at the local farmer’s market.

The Many Types of White Pumpkins

Though the outer skin of the pumpkin may be white or even blue, the inner flesh resembles that of its better known relations of orange pumpkins.

And most varieties make fantastic pies no matter what color they are!

Baby Boo Pumpkin

This is one of the smallest and the cutest of the lot, though, alas, they are not edible. They would make great craft projects for kids and excellent fall decorating. They are also quite prolific if you like giving away lots of pumpkin gifts: they produce about 400 seeds per pound!

Hooligan Pumpkin

Another small, white winter squash with a bit of green spotting. Maybe you’d like your Halloween pumpkin face to have freckles!

Lumina Pumpkin

The Lumina pumpkin is a very popular variety that ends up at 10 to 15 pounds when fully grown, almost white enough to light up your garden without lamps, and boasts an orangey flesh.

Casper Pumpkin

Just referring to this variety when discussing your garden with your friends could be amusing. It needs a good amount of time to get that snowy skin, about 155 days

If the usual ribbing of pumpkins makes it difficult for you to carve your favorite jack o’lantern face, you’ll appreciate the smoothness of this one. Remember that the Casper is a tad over-sweet when baking, so change the amount of other sweet ingredients to compensate.

Super Moon Pumpkin

Want a bigger, meatier pumpkin? The Full Moon can get up to 90 pounds! If you want this hefty type to stay white, better keep it in the shade.

Cotton Candy

Cotton Candy Pumpkin

Rupp Seeds developed this one. It has a mighty strong stem and a traditional round pumpkin shape. Keep your pumpkin in a dark and cool spot to prevent yellowing.

Silver Moon

Silver Moon Pumpkin

Gee, there are a lot of “moon” references to these white beauties. I can’t imagine why that is. What makes this particular moon special is its resistance to powdery mildew and zucchini yellow mosaic virus. Its medium size will make it a bit easier to handle than its heavier relatives.

Valenciano Pumpkin

A little flattened in shape, a little ribbed, and a little sweet in taste. This is a medium-sized pumpkin that weighs in at around eight to 10 pounds and takes 110 days to mature.

Crystal Star

Crystal Star Pumpkin

The Crystal Star doesn’t yellow with age as a few of the other varieties may. Around 35 pounds and 12 inches in diameter, this is a good large pumpkin for carving and cooking with its evenly-distributed pulp.

White Ghost

Ghost Pumpkin

The oddball of the family with its irregular shape, thick flesh, and unusual taste. Not a really good pick for carving unless you’re really determined.

Polar Bear Pumpkin

It’s as big as it sounds, weighing about 65 pounds. (Hey, I made a rhyme!) Store it in the sun after harvesting to get that gleaming white color.

Snowball Pumpkin

The Snowballs pack thousands of seeds in a little, round, two-pound package. Their dark green stems contrast nicely with their white skin.

Planting White Pumpkins

Pumpkins can be grown just about everywhere, except maybe Antartica. Here’s the lowdown on what you need to know.

How to Plant

Do you live somewhere that gets a lot of rain? Try planting the white pumpkin seeds in a mound of soil to avoid water-logging. High winds always knocking on your door? Plant in ditches to block the breeze.

When to Plant

If you live in the warmer climates, it is best to plant seeds outside as pumpkins do not always transplant well. Start your seeds indoors if you live in one of the colder areas. They are safe to plant outside when temperatures stay above 70 degrees during the day and no less than 55 degrees at night. Cold temperatures do not sit well with this plant.

Where to Plant

Make sure the spot you select has well-draining soil with some water retention. Pumpkins do not appreciate too much dryness. The amount of shade will depend on the type you choose. Some need shade to retain their white color. If you want the fruits to have a pleasing round shape, make the soil level and smooth. Uneven soil will make for lumpy pumpkins.

Care and Cultivation

Pumpkins have their quirks no matter whether they’re red, orange, white, or blue. As you would with any plant, take special note of this winter squash’s special needs.

As mentioned before, different types have their requirements to develop and maintain that moon glow tone. Polar Bear, for example, likes a little sun after harvesting while Full Moon needs shade to stay white. Your type selection may depend on what sort of sun and shade areas you have available in your pumpkin patch. Many pumpkins like about eight hours of sun a day.

If you want to make doubly sure that you get the blinding white you desire, only use organic fertilizer that won’t mess with the pigment of your pumpkins. Add fertilizer on a regular basis to keep your pumpkins fat and fed.

While the plants will suffer from lack of water, they don’t like swimming in it either. Make sure the drainage is excellent but don’t let them dry out. Mulch can be helpful in maintaining this balance.

I don’t want to sound like a nagging mother who beats you over the head with the obvious suggestions, but here I go: the bigger the pumpkin, the more space it will need. Feel free to respond with a well-deserved “Duh!” Even if the pumpkins themselves will not be that big, the vines can spread quite far and wide, so allow plenty of room for those green curlicues.

Companion Planting

Bees are quite important for pollination so choose plants that will attract bees to your patch: bee balm, Black-eyed Susan, and lavender for example. Sunflowers can help deter pests that want to munch on your vines.

Harvesting and Storing White Pumpkins

Are you craving pumpkin pie or do you like roasted pumpkin seeds to snack on? Here are some harvesting and storage tips for the fruit and the seed.

Harvesting Tips for Pumpkin Fruit

  • Keep track of how long it takes for your chosen type of pumpkin to mature. If left too long, the skin may yellow or freckle, or the fruit may begin to rot from the bottom.
  • Flick the pumpkin with a finger and listen for a hollow sound. Check for resistance by pressing a fingernail into the skin. If the skin remains intact, it’s ripe.
  • Use a knife to cut the pumpkin from its vine. Ripping it free, besides just being plain rude, will leave a ragged stem that may shorten the life of the pumpkin.
  • Most fruit will need to be stored in dry, cool, shaded places. Some types, like the Polar Bear, appreciate a little sun after harvesting.

Harvesting Tips for Pumpkin Seeds

  • Rinse the seeds as you pick them out of the pulp and spread them on a paper towel to dry for about a week.
  • If using the seeds for planting, store them in an envelope with your other seeds or in the refrigerator.
  • If storing for eating, you might want to roast them first before placing in a jar with a tight-fitting lid.

Pests and Diseases

Though pumpkins are rather hardy, they have a few enemies. The following information will tell you about the little invaders and what to do about them.

Aphids are often the first on the list of pests. These tiny green or white bugs can multiply rapidly and love to nibble on leaves and blossoms. Best to crash their party as early as possible with a good blast of water. Introducing ladybugs will help control the population as well.

Beetles, whether they are cucumber beetles or squash bugs , are usually best handled by picking them off and drowning them in a tub of ammonia mixed with soapy water. Sunflowers planted nearby and timed to bloom before the pumpkins can distract the beetles from feasting on them.

Powdery Mildew

Powdery mildew may have you rethinking that next powdered doughnut you were about to eat. It looks like its name, and it can live in the soil and move with the wind. A bit of fungicide can curb it. Crop rotation can help avoid infecting plants through the earth.

Zucchini Yellow Mosaic Virus

Zucchini Yellow Mosaic Virus, as well as a few other similar viruses, are often transferred to pumpkin plants through nasty little critters like the aphids mentioned above. If infected early, the fruit can be severely reduced. Weeds also spread infection so be diligent about weeding and controlling pests. Consider planting varieties that are resistant to viruses and mature earlier rather than later.

Q: How long do pumpkins take to grow?

A: Pumpkin plant growth stages will vary with the different types, some maturing as early as 90 days, some as late as 155 days.

Q: Help! My pumpkin is turning yellow! What am I doing wrong?

A: Check on the type of pumpkin you’re growing. Some pumpkins need a little more shade or else they will yellow a bit. Others, like the Polar Bear, might need some sunning in order to achieve their blinding white color. And keep track of how long the fruits have been on the vine; some turn yellow as they get older.

Character Summary [ ]

Casper has been haunting his family home of Whipstaff Manor for some time, most likely decades after he died for playing out in the cold for too long when he was twelve years old. A newspaper seen during the scene in the attic says he died from pneumonia. Now in the care of his three wicked uncles, Stretch, Stinkie and Fatso, Casper's afterlife is not exactly pleasant. He has had to put up with his uncles' outrageous antics and his wish to gain a friend is always ruined. Casper is very friendly and outgoing, but he sometimes appears rather shy. He has a crush on Kathleen "Kat" Harvey.

Appearance [ ]

As a ghost, Casper McFadden is shaped as a transparent figure with some visible lights that can be seen on him when he moves or gets close to people. He hovers and flies around to get to locations with quick ease. To avoid frightening others, he can turn himself completely invisible at will. In his ghost form, he has no hair and has big blue eyes.

When he is human again for a temporary time, he is given back his original visage. As a mortal, he is the average height of a boy his age, with dark blonde hair and blue eyes. To Kat's surprise, Casper was very handsome. He still manages to retain some of his ghostly abilities as when he and Kat are dancing at her Halloween party, he levitates the two of them in the air. This might be due to the fact that his human form isn't permanently complete but for only that one night.

The Friendly Ghost [ ]

When two boys enter Whipstaff Manor on a dare from some school bullies, they argue over which one should take the picture until a voice is heard off-screen telling them to stop fighting, a spectral entity swipes the camera from their hands and takes the picture himself which scares the two boys away.

The next night Carrigan Crittenden and her attorney Paul "Dibs" Plutzker enter Whipstaff Manor to look for a valuable treasure which Carrigan believes is from her late father. Once again the voice that scared the two boys away says "hello?" After a few words from Dibs, they demand him to show himself but when he tells them not to scream, Carrigan demands that if he doesn't show himself right now she will have him arrested for trespassing. The voice agrees and replies "here I come". Suddenly a small child like ghost slides down from the stairway and lands in front of Carrigan and Dibs. He greets them warmly with "Hi I'm Casper" terrified Carrigan and Dibs let out their screams but Casper tries to calm them telling them not to scream or they will wake his.....but says "too late" when he hears the sound of his uncles The Ghostly Trio and disappears as they were rising from the foyer forming a whirlwind tornado to scare away Carrigan and Dibs. Carrigan and Dibs try several attempts to remove the ghosts from the mansion but are unsuccessful. When the Ghostly Trio scare away a construction crew Casper tries to stop them from leaving but the terrified workers successfully escape. Lamenting Casper breaks down saying that all he wants is a friend.

Finding a friend [ ]

While Casper is watching Mr. Rogers on TV in the attic bored and flipping through channels, he switches to a news report about an afterlife therapist named Dr. James Harvey who discusses the summary of ghosts. He explains that ghosts are simply spirits that have unfinished business on Earth and that as an "afterlife therapist" he tries to help ghosts come to terms with their "unfinished business" so they can cross over into the next world. When his daughter Kathleen "Kat" Harvey is shown on the TV, Casper, seeing how beautiful she looks, instantly falls for her. Remembering Carrigan, Casper files through an electrical cord and zooms to a nearby motel where Carrigan is ordering room service. Casper uses the TV in the room to show Carrigan the story about Dr. Harvey. She watches the story where a woman explains her husband died years ago, but his spirit wouldn't leave the apartment, so she called Dr. Harvey and in a few weeks her husband's spirit left. Carrigan, upon watching the report, decides to contact Dr. Harvey.

The Harvey's arrive at Whipstaff Manor [ ]

When Kat and her father arrive at Whipstaff Manor, they meet Carrigan and Dibs with Carrigan ordering Dr. Harvey to remove the ghosts as quickly as possible. When Kat and her father enter the manor, they look around and become amazed at how amazing it looks while Kat goes upstairs to find a room to settle in. Once Casper sees that Kat has finally come to his house, he gets excited seeing that things are going exactly the way he anticipated but started to panic wondering whether or not if she'll like him and tries to find a way to introduce himself to her. He then hears a sound coming from the basement where Dr. Harvey turns on the electricity. After the father and daughter talk, Kat goes back upstairs to find a room.

She soon after finds Casper's uncles Stretch, Fatso, and Stinkie's room and ignores it, after being confused on the names printed on the beds, to this she says "I wonder where Doc and Dopey sleep?". Soon after though Kat finds Casper's room and chooses to settle in. As Casper watches while Kat unpacks and lies on his bed he gets lovestruck and says "There's a girl... on my bed. YES!". He hides in the closet and tries to say hi when she opens the door, but she accidentally drops her stuff on his head before closing the door. When Kat lies down on the bed again, Casper shapeshifts into the form of a pillow as she unknowingly lays her head on to him, and punches him like an actual pillow. She resumes unpacking as Casper cautiously approaches her. She unintentionally throws a ball of socks in his mouth. When he spits it out and it hits the floor flying past her, he goes blank with his eyes wide open realizing his mistake, as Kat stood up in fear. Her eyes were also wide open, as she turns around and with a frightening look, she stares at Casper upon seeing a real ghost for the first time. Nervous and scared he says "Uhh hi?" which causes her to go cross eyes and she faints, falling to the floor unconscious. In his bad karma, Casper goes "Aww man" and goes to the bathroom to add water to his body adding that he made a bad first impression, He returns to the room and rings himself out like a towel over her so she can wake up. Upon regaining consciousness Kat's eyes clear, when she sees Casper, and when he asks her "Better?", she breaks into one big scream. Backing up in fright, Casper screams as well until he hears Dr. Harvey coming up the stairs and immediately disappears.

Dr. Harvey calms his daughter down and asks her what's wrong. She claims she's seen a ghost but he assures her that ghosts can't hurt her and that they're simply spirits with unfinished business. Soon after searching the room he opens a closet and assures Kat that no one is in there seeing the look on her face he turns, and sees Casper standing in the doorway. He greets him warmly "Pleasure to meet you sir" as he sticks out his hand for a handshake. Dr. Harvey, however, seeing a real ghost for the first time breaks into a terrified scream, grabs his daughter and runs down the hallway. Dr. Harvey frantically takes his daughter into a closet and tells her to stay there while he confronts the ghost by himself. Before he leaves, Kat apologizes to her father for not believing him and thinking he was a loser. Casper back in his room gets upset and frustrated, as his plan in befriending Kat seems to backfire until he hears his uncles: The Ghostly Trio returning home from a night's hauntings. Casper tries to stall them by convincing them to eat outside, but they realize that he's trying to keep them out of the house and shoot him into the sky like a rubber band . With Casper out of the way, the Trio finds Dr. Harvey and begin attacking him. He ends up fighting them back just as Casper returns to the house, and hearing noise from the closet he unlocks it freeing Kat and she falls on top of him. When he worryingly asks her if she's okay, she gasps and runs away screaming. She returns to the foyer where she finds her father fighting with the three ghosts. He eventually defeats them by sucking them up with a vacuum cleaner .

The Bonding [ ]

The next morning, Kat enters the kitchen, first clearing the area with a hand-held vacuum. Casper meets her there, but before she could scream again he wraps himself around her face and mouth to prevent her from doing so. He manages to explain to her that he's a friendly ghost warning her that if she screams it will wake up his uncles and they will get awfully cranky. He lets her go, and she tells him "You're so cold" rubbing her face and referring to his body temperature. As Casper serves Kat breakfast and entertains her with questions about what it's like to be a ghost, the two begin to bond. They touch hands as her hand goes through his, she smiles and says "Cool". Dr. Harvey soon enters the kitchen still agitated after last night, and Casper serves him as well. Casper asks him if he can get him a newspaper and Dr. Harvey accepts. After Casper leaves, the two are about to eat until the Ghostly trio arrives like helicopters frightening both the father and daughter. Stretch slams his fist on the table, and says "I love the smell of fleshies in the morning". Soon sunlight in engulfs the room, and the Ghostly Trio appears to have melted to death. Dr. Harvey assumes that they have crossed over, but he becomes wrong as they appear on the right of the room with Stretch saying "Guess again bone bag!!". Dr. Harvey greets them warmly "Fellas....good morning". When Casper returns with the paper for Dr. Harvey, Stretch becomes angry at him for serving the "intruders" before them. When Casper tries cleaning the floor while they are eating, Stretch confronts him saying that the floor used to be dirty enough to eat off of. Casper points out to his uncle that they have company, but Stretch retaliates by claiming company loves misery. He turns into a Nike shoe and kicks Casper away. Kat tries to defend Casper saying that he was cleaning the floor, but her father hurries her off to school.

Following Kat to School [ ]

Later after Kat arrives at school the teacher of the classroom Mr. Curtis announces to the students that their Halloween party is canceled. One of the students, Amber Whitmire , stands up and suggests that since her parents cleaned the boathouse, it won't be any problem having the party at her place. The class reluctantly applauds as Amber sits back down.

When Kat is introduced by her last name, Amber makes fun of her name by going ".....HARVEY" as the class laughs. While Mr. Curtis reprimands Amber, Kat stands to the front of the class and sees Casper on a Mount Rushmore portrait with his face replacing Washington; he angrily stares at Amber before turning and smiling at Kat. As she corrects her name for Mr. Curtis by telling him to call her Kat, Amber again picks on Kat saying "meow". causing the class to laugh again. As Kat explains why she moved to Friendship, Maine, from Santa Fe in New Mexico, Casper ties Amber's shoelaces together before the other kids as he plans to have them trip over them in retaliation for treating Kat badly (which they were all unaware of).

When Kat soon reveals that she lives in Whipstaff Manor, the class becomes shocked, since most of them have all heard of it, and they decide to have the upcoming Halloween dance there. Amber stands up and protests, saying that she thought they were going to have the party at her place. So she suggests that they take a vote, but is angry when she notices she's the only who votes for holding the party at her place. The class votes to have the party at Whipstaff. When the bell rings for the next classes, everyone gets up to leave, but they all trip over their shoelaces since Casper tied all of them together.

Party Planning [ ]

Later another student at Kat's school Victor "Vic" DePhilippi , arrives at Whipstaff Manor and meets with Kat. When he asks if he can come inside Kat says no and that they should stay outside. As Casper watches with jealously, Vic asks Kat if she had asked her dad about the party, as Kat looks at Casper, and knowing he is jealous she says yes and that her father "kinda hit the ceiling" so Vic asks her to the Halloween dance and she agrees. As Vic walks away an excited Kat whispers "Yes!!" before going back inside the manor. Vic, however, is revealed to be in cahoots with Amber as she suggests that he ask out Kat, as a plan to get back at her, although he shows that he doesn't like the idea.

The Lighthouse [ ]

Later on, that night as Kat gets ready for bed, Casper appears in her music box showing Kat that he's a good dancer. After some more taunting around the room, he soon reveals he was showing signs of being jealous of Vic, but Kat is insistent that she can't go to the Halloween dance with a ghost claiming that she has a date. When he asks her what Vic has that he doesn't have, she answers a pulse and a tan, but Casper explains he has those traits She asks "how about a reflection?" Casper looks in the mirror to see if he has one which he doesn't. but covers for it by deciding to make an impression. He asks if he can do this. He changes himself into a superman like person and quotes terminator " Come with me if you want to live" Casper pulls Kat by the arm outside and nearly causes her to fall but manages to catch her. He takes her to a lighthouse where he reveals that this is where he comes here every night to think. When she asks him about his life, he realizes that he doesn't remember any of it. When he asks her if it is that bad, she denies it and replies that its just kind of sad.

While they are lying in bed together, she says that she wonders why he doesn't remember anything. He sadly informs her that, when you're a ghost, none of that really matters anymore. She says that sometimes she forgets things. Like her mother Amelia when she was alive, the sound of her making breakfast downstairs, the way she would put on her lipstick so carefully, and her soap that she bathed in, when she hugged her she breathe in so deep, and how every night before she would to sleep her mother would whisper in her ear, "Stardust in the eyes rosy cheeks and a happy girl in the morning." When Kat asks Casper that if her mom was a ghost would she forget her, Casper replies, "No she never forget you." Casper in return asks Kat that if he was alive would she go to the Halloween dance with him, while Kat agrees sleepily. Casper asks her in a whisperer "Can i Keep you?" As she happily sleeps, Casper kisses her on the cheek. Since his ghostly body temperature is cold, Kat, thinking that its the wind, asks him, "Close the window, its cold." Casper goes to sleep alongside Kat.

The Attic [ ]

The next day, Kat goes up to the attic and finds a hidden room which was Casper's former bedroom. She cleans the mold off the windows and sees some old crates which are dusty. She blows the dust off to reveal a name that says C. McFadden and opens the crate revealing some of Casper's old possessions from when he was alive, she opens all of the crates and turns each of the toys on as she waits for him to come up to the attic. Casper, hearing the noise goes up to the attic, and files over to the hidden room where Kat has expected his arrival, she happily says "Its about time" and giggles as he enters the room and confusingly looks around. She asks him, "Look familiar?" and he soon starts to remember who he was and his old life. Casper, having gotten his memories back, swoops to an old chest as Kat follows where he finds his mothers old wedding gown. He decides to let Kat try it on and he fits her with the dress telling her that it was his mother's. Kat asks if she can try it out and he agrees. As she ties the back of the dress up while looking in the mirror she compliments that its perfect, and asks him if he thinks she could wear it to the party tonight. Casper soon finds an old sled which causes him to remember how he died, he then begins to explain his death to Kat:

Kat asks him what its like to die, and Casper said it was like being born only backwards he didn't go where he was supposed to go so he just stayed behind so his dad won't be lonely. Kat looks down and finds an old newspaper article with his dad's picture on it. She asks if that's his dad, and he says yes. She reads the article which explains how Casper's father, a great Inventor, claim that he was haunted by the ghost of his dead son and invented a machine that can bring him back to life called the Lazarus. However, he was sent to an insane asylum before it could be completed.

The Lazarus [ ]

Realizing that this could be his chance to come back to life, Casper begins to take Kat to his father's secret laboratory, having her guided by a moving chair which leads to a hidden passage underneath the floorboards of the library. The laboratory is filled with various steam punk-esque contraptions, including the Lazarus. Kat activates the machine by pushing a button on an old Frankenstein book. Carrigan and Dibs who saw, Dr. Harvey being taken out of the house by the Ghostly Trio in the library have now entered the house to find the treasure. They follow Casper and Kat to the laboratory finding out it also contains the vault leading to the treasure which they are looking for. Meanwhile, on the machine Kat finds a glass capsule containing just enough of what Casper describes as "Kind of an instant primordial soup mix" which what brings ghosts back to life, but just enough for one. After Casper puts the capsule in the turning, vent he asks Kat to pull the lever. She confusingly asks "which one?", He says he doesn't know, and suggests she try one. She pulls one lever which has the machine's door open. As Casper is about to step inside Kat tries to warn him, but he tells her "I'm gonna to be alive" and steps inside as the door closes. While Kat is using the machine to operate it, Carrigan and Dibs unable to open the vault since its locked steal the capsule from the machine leaving Casper disappointed when he turns into an egg yolk.

Carrigan and Dibs who now have the capsule realizes that if one of them were to die, they could go through the vault door, get the treasure out and come back to life with the Lazarus machine. Not able to decide which one of them should die, they make several attempts to kill each other. This culminates with Carrigan falling to her death from a cliff and dies. She quickly reappears as a monstrous ghost. A caricature of her human self.

Carrigan's Ghost [ ]

While Kat uses a dust bellow to reinflate Casper, she stops when his head pops back up and he says "I think my ears just popped". Suddenly, greedy Carrigan now a monstrous ghost, flies into the laboratory and grabs the treasure chest inside the vault attempting to take it. Casper is in shock claiming that its his treasure, but Carrigan bellows "You mean MY!! treasure" Kat is shocked to see Miss Crittenden as a ghost and she replies "In the flesh...well in a couple of minutes", and does an evil laugh. Dibs soon reappears and shows Carrigan the capsule to help her remember. Kat realizes that Dibs stole the capsule and claims it's Casper's. Carrigan laughs and disagrees again as she orders Dibs to revive her. Just as he approaches, Casper steals the capsule back from Dibs, knocks him into the moat of the laboratory, and takes Kat back upstairs with the moving chair where she greets the kids who have arrived for the Halloween party.

Dibs's betrayal and Carrigan Crossing Over [ ]

Casper and Kat return back to the laboratory, where Kat stops Casper from confronting Dibs for opening his treasure. They install the potion into the Lazarus only to find Carrigan inside the machine telling Casper that its her turn in the oven. She orders Dibs to turn her human again, but he turns on her saying that they are through and that he will be using the treasure in a great big expensive house with lovely purple wall paper and great big green carpets and adopt a little dog called Carrigan "a b**ch just like you". Carrigan gasps at Dibs's betrayal, and says she has no intention of staying dead. He proclaims that he's got the power and he's got the treasure which prompts her to angrily fling him out a window. Casper and Kat point out that people only become ghosts because they have "unfinished business" and ask Carrigan what hers is. Carrigan naively declares that she has no unfinished business, saying that she has her treasure and her mansion "i have everything im just perfect", and gloats with an evil laugh again. Unfortunately for her, she starts to cross-over to the afterlife against her will, as the treasure *was* her unfinished business. The terrified Carrigan begs and pleads but it is no use. She crosses over to the afterlife, forced to remain dead forever. After she explodes, the capsule she was holding flies through the air but before it could hit the ground Kat manages to catch it. The treasure chest also falls to the floor and opens, revealing the "treasure" was actually a baseball autographed by Duke Snider, Casper's favorite player from the Brooklyn Dodgers, thus revealing the so-called treasure would have been worthless to Carrigan and that she essentially died for nothing. While he tosses the ball into the air, Kat grabs it and tells Casper that its time, reminding him of his wish to come back to life.

Dr. Harvey's Ghost [ ]

Just as Casper and Kat are about to use the machine to bring Casper back to life, Dr. Harvey shows up as a ghost having died accidentally while he was out at a bar with the Ghostly Trio, (he got drunk and fell into an open trench) and he flies into the laboratory with the Ghostly Trio. As a ghost, he is now loud and obnoxious like the trio, but he apparently has no memory of his daughter. Kat shockingly asks the trio what they have done to him and Stretch responds with "nothing he's just a little....dead". While Casper's uncles are very pleased with this, Kat is driven to tears. However, when she makes the gesture of the pinky promise with her ghostly father to remind him of who he is, Dr. Harvey realizes that he has died and he left his daughter behind without a father. Realizing that Kat can't live by having to lose another parent, Casper decides that Dr. Harvey must be brought back to life instead. He uses the Lazarus to revive him thereby giving up his last chance to be alive himself again, and being forced to remain a ghost. Kat and her father embrace each other after he steps out of the machine, he happily tells her that he thought they almost lost each other for a minute there. Just as everyone upstairs starts the music Casper sadly tells Kat that her party is starting without her and that her date is probably waiting. Dr Harvey says that maybe they should get going then he confusingly asks where are they and Kat giggles.

The Angel [ ]

As a depressed and lonely Casper sulks in his room he tosses, his baseball into the air but it disappears on the third try. He looks up from the floorboards and sees a light. As it shine's down in front of him it forms into the beautiful Amelia Harvey , Kat's deceased mother who is wearing a red dress floating like an angel revealing that she has became an angel instead of a ghost. Amelia tells Casper that it was very noble (and generous) of him to sacrifice his chance at life for Kat and she knows she won't forget it. Kat needs her father and Amelia knows his father won't forget it either which makes Casper surprised as he didn't know she knew his father. Amelia tells Casper that he fulfilled his father's greatest dream and she knows he is very proud of him, and for what he's done she's giving Casper his dream in return: A chance to be alive again but just for the Halloween party as she point's out as "sort of a Cinderella deal" When Casper asks if he had gotten until midnight she answer's "ten" Casper pointed out that Cinderella had until midnight. Amelia tells him Cinderella wasn't "twelve years old". She then blow's stardust on Casper which turns him human.

The Party [ ]

The now human Casper goes downstairs to join the party as he finds Kat who appears to be the only one without a date; he offers her his hand, and the two go on to the foyer to join the other kids . He begins to dance with Kat. As he hovers them over the ground Kat becomes shocked until he reveals himself as who he is and Kat asks "Casper?" the two embrace and go back to the ground as all the other kids watch. Casper and Kat slowly do a romantic dance and soon it hits the stroke of ten. Just as Casper kisses Kat he turns back into a ghost which freaks out all the other kids who are gasping. He turns around, giggles and says "boo" erupting into a screaming frenzy and causing them to run wildly out of the mansion. Kat wryly comments "not bad for my first party," Casper replies "it could have been better," but Dr Harvey tells them that it isn't over yet and signals the Ghostly Trio who begin playing rock music. The disembodied voice of Little Richard sings the theme to "Casper the Friendly Ghost" as Casper, Kat and her father dance together.

How Did Casper the Friendly Ghost Die?

By jake rossen | dec 23, 2019.

Universal Pictures

The star of dozens of animated shorts and specials, hundreds of comics, and one big-screen feature (which spawned a couple of straight-to-video follow-ups), Casper the Friendly Ghost has enjoyed a great deal of spooky success since he debuted in 1945. An affable spirit, the seemingly pre-adolescent blob of ectoplasm only wants to make friends. Unfortunately, people are consistently wary of his ethereal qualities. In the earliest shorts, he preferred to hang out by himself near a tombstone.

Does the tombstone belong to him? By virtue of being a ghost, doesn’t that mean Casper was once a real, live boy who suffered a tragic fate at a young age?

The Ghost With No Name

When Casper was created back in 1940 by Seymour Reit and Joe Oriolo, the question apparently didn’t come up. Reit and Oriolo planned to have Casper—who did not yet have a name—be the star of an illustrated children’s book, with Reit writing and Oriolo illustrating it. They never got the chance. The two, who worked at Fleischer Studios on animated shorts, were both drafted to serve in World War II. When they returned, Fleischer Studios had been purchased by Paramount, renamed Famous Studios, and wanted complete control over the intellectual property of work created by employees. The two sold Casper and other characters for a total of $200 to Paramount.

When Casper made his animated debut in the 1945 Famous Studios short “The Friendly Ghost,” he finally got a name , but no mention was made of his origins. The short references his “brothers and sisters” who enjoy scaring people but offers no other details of his private life.

A second short , 1948’s “There’s Good Boos To-Night,” shows Casper leaning on a tombstone while reading a book, with a “Love Thy Neighbor” sign hanging nearby. The ghosts in the cemetery are referred to as his “neighbors” and appear to rise from their respective resting places when it’s time to go haunting. This would imply Casper is relaxing at his own gravesite, though his name doesn’t appear on the tombstone. If so, it would support the idea he once occupied the land of the living.

As Casper moved into another medium, however, a case began to be made for his existence as something other than human. In 1949, St. John Publishing produced five Casper comics. In 1952, Harvey Comics took over the license. In an effort to expand Casper’s world, Harvey gave him a ghost family, including a mom and three uncles. None of them were named until 1955, when the uncles were dubbed Fatso, Fusso, and Lazo. What wasn’t clear, however, was whether Casper’s relatives were all deceased as well or whether the Casper mythology implies ghosts are simply "born" ghosts.

The Pneumonia Theory

When the Casper feature film starring Christina Ricci was released in 1995, producers apparently thought moviegoers would be confused by a lack of explanation, and so the Casper of that film was portrayed as a boy named Casper McFadden. He was said to have died of pneumonia at the age of 12 after staying out in cold weather for too long playing with a sled he had just received as a gift.

There is one alternative, and slightly darker, theory that was purportedly first floated by The Simpsons . In the 1991 episode “Three Men and a Comic Book,” Bart and Lisa speculate that Casper is the ghost of Richie Rich, another Harvey Comics icon. (The two bear a resemblance.) Lisa believes that his realization of “how hollow the pursuit of money really is” caused Richie to take his own life. Other observers have speculated that perhaps Richie’s parents killed their son for the insurance money.

This is, of course, virtually impossible, as Richie Rich wasn’t created until 1953, 13 years after Reit and Oriolo conceived of Casper.

So what is Casper—former boy or forever ghost? Given his comfort hanging around a tombstone and his pleasant nature preventing him from besmirching the grave of another, it seems likely he was once human. To date, only the 1995 feature has attempted to detail what led him to the afterlife. Considering Casper's appeal as a children's property, that's probably for the best.

Squash is one of the plants grown in the traditional Native American vegetable growing technique called the Three Sisters. The other two plants in the Three Sisters are beans and corn. Each plant had its role in this companion planting tradition. Corn served as a structure for the vining beans to grow up. Squash served as a ground cover to prevent weeds from growing. Beans provided natural fertilizer for all.
