Samhain, the Ghost of Halloween: Remembering the Ghostbusters’ Formidable Halloween Foe

' src=

Despite multiple movies, multiple cartoon series, spinoff comic books and games, there are only a handful of recognizable, recurring ghosts in the Ghostbusters universe. Slimer began as a memorable antagonist in the 1984 film before eventually transitioning to a sort of Firehouse mascot in The Real Ghostbusters cartoon. The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man presides as the reigning champ and fan favorite of specters. Then there’s Samhain , the Ghost of Halloween who made his first appearance in the first season of The Real Ghostbusters and quickly became one of the Ghostbusters’ most formidable foes of all time.

First appearing in the eighth episode of the inaugural season of The Real Ghostbusters , “ When Halloween was Forever ,” Samhain is revealed to be an ancient spirit dating back to the origins of Halloween, hailing from 7th century Ireland. As in, Samhain is Halloween personified. Somehow, the spirit was trapped in an antique clock for centuries, until it was transported to New York for display in a museum. His two goblin henchmen set him loose on Halloween night, where he then halts time and attempts to make Halloween everlasting. His downfall of the episode was his weakness to light.

In the season 2 episode “The Devil to Pay ,” minor demon Dyb Devlin conjured up illusions for the Ghostbusters to face, which included Samhain. They engaged in battle, panicked, until Ray finally realized the real Samhain was still safely secured in the containment unit.

Samhain was unleashed from the containment unit for real in season 3 episode “ Halloween II ½ ,” courtesy of his favored goblin minions. His main objective this time was revenge. So, he took over the Firehouse and used it as his own personal fortress full of ghosts. The Ghostbusters teamed up with the Jr. Ghostbusters, who promptly get captured and held hostage. Strategic blasts and fighting ensue, and the Ghostbusters successfully trap Samhain once more.

NOW Comics published The Real Ghostbusters comic series based on the cartoon, starting in 1988. Naturally, Samhain made appearances there as well, beginning with issue 17. In the second annual edition, Samhain seems to have met a permanent demise, but can you really kill the spirit of Halloween? Especially considering Samhain notably appears in both the intro and outro of the Extreme Ghostbusters animated series in 1997. The series only lasted 40 episodes before cancellation, but Samhain’s presence in the opening is strongly suggestive that he would’ve popped up in an episode at some point. He was also the only ghost other than Slimer to receive an Extreme Ghostbusters toy.

Samhain appeared as a central enemy in IDW’s comic Ghostbusters: What in Samhain Just Happened?! and the board game as well. That doesn’t even touch upon the countless mentions or cameo appearances by the Ghost of Halloween over the entire franchise history, canon or otherwise.

The Ghost of Halloween is driven by a need to protect other ghosts, goblins, and other creatures of the night. He longs for perpetual Halloween and for his underlings to be treated well. Though most ghosts tend to be afraid of him. Samhain has a temper, after all. He can stop time and create an enduring night. His backstory is straight out of actual Halloween folklore. Above all, he’s one of the few ghosts to present a recurring problem for the Ghostbusters. It’s only fitting that the very essence of Halloween makes for one of the toughest villains the Ghostbusters have ever faced, again and again.

Samhain is overdue for another appearance, don’t you think?

‘The Babadook’ Gave Rise to a New Wave of Introspective Horror Ten Years Ago

' src=

Warning: The following contains major spoilers for The Babadook .

The first time I watched The Babadook , I nearly had a nervous breakdown. It was March of 2015. My husband, a CPA, was deep in the throes of tax season, leaving me alone for long stretches of time with our one-year-old son and three-year-old daughter who was going through a screaming phase. Needless to say, the story of a mother pushed to the edge of sanity resonated with me deeply. One scene in particular, monstrous clothing reigning down as the frightened heroine crawls across the floor, was so affecting that I paused the movie and cried for a good ten minutes. Despite the extremity of my reaction, I would wager that I’m not alone. In the ten years since The Babadook premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, Jennifer Kent’s debut feature has become known for its ability to blend horror with mental health and bring to life the complex emotions of motherhood that often go unspoken.

This stylish Australian indie follows Amelia ( Essie Davis ), a single mother struggling to raise her young son Samuel ( Noah Wiseman ) while suffering from severe mental illness. The film opens with an ill-fated drive to the hospital as Amelia’s husband Oskar ( Ben Winspear ) dies in a car crash on the same day she gives birth to their son. Six years later, she’s struggling to cope with this unplanned reality and the painful memories that resurface every time Samuel’s birthday rolls around. Complicating matters, her energetic boy demonstrates serious behavior problems that keep Amelia from accessing reliable childcare. The untenable situation spirals out of control when a mysterious children’s book called Mister Babadook unleashes a dangerous presence in the house. As the horrifying illustrations come to life, Amelia learns that the story’s warning is true: “you can’t get rid of the Babadook.”

Part of the film’s success can undoubtedly be laid at the feet of Kent’s fantastic creature design. Essentially colorless, this sinister gentleman appears dressed in a long, black cape and crumpled top-hat with spindly, black spikes emerging from his sleeves in the place of fingers. Spiky black hair frames a pale face with wide, bulging eyes and a perpetually screaming mouth lined with dirty teeth. Inspired by Lon Chaney’s unnerving Man in the Beaver Hat from Tod Browning’s 1927 silent film London After Midnight , Kent collaborated with artist Alex Juhasz to design this nightmarish book. Describing his creation, Jahusz explained, “Mister Babadook is a monster playing at being human. Along with his costume, he wears a mask with a fixed expression, a misguided approximation of what it thinks a man is.” Viewer response was so great that Juhasz collaborated with paper engineer Simon Arizpe on a limited release of Mister Babadook , an expanded version of the fascinating prop.

Best Netflix Horror

Though unsettling on the page, Mister Babadook is arguably more frightening in human form. This inky, black phantom invades Amelia’s home with the jerky and cartoonish movements of a pop-up book. His guttural growls sound more like an ancient jaw unhinging itself as a malevolent entity tries to approximate human speech. Kent studied the work of French actor, director, and magician Georges Méliès to design the in-camera effects that bring this eerie world to life. The Babadook and its old-fashioned monster have a distinctly low-fi feel that proves to be a feature rather than a bug. Seeming to emerge from the shadows themselves, this startling creature lurks in the background whenever Amelia tries to ask for help further isolating her from the world and driving her ever deeper into the clutches of the beast.

In addition to this unique bogeyman, Kent masterfully uses color and shadow to illustrate the pervasive nature of Amelia’s depression. The walls of the home she shares with Samuel are all colored a dark blue or institutional gray. With closed windows and a narrow front yard, the house seems more like a confining bubble of darkness and despair than the vibrant home of a growing child. Shadows flit across unmoving frames showing the incessant passage of time in a hopeless environment where nothing ever changes. As a caregiver at an assisted living facility, Amelia frequently wears the light pink smock of a nurse’s uniform. Kent styles her in similar passive colors throughout the film, highlighting the fact that Amelia’s life revolves around taking care of everyone but herself.

As the Babadook’s hold over Amelia grows stronger, she begins to turn her pain outward. The dreadful book reappears this time with images of a familiar-looking mother strangling her dog and her son then slicing her own throat with a large kitchen knife. Amelia begins to detach from reality and fantasizes about seeing Oskar in the basement. At first a welcome sight, this vision takes an unsettling turn when he promises that they can be together again if Amelia will just bring him “the boy.” Kent uses imagery from Mario Bava’s Black Sabbath to hint at Amelia’s crumbling psyche. The ghoulish face of a woman rising from her deathbed rushes towards her as the TV she’s watching abruptly changes to news coverage of a mother who murdered her son on his birthday. Watching in horror, Amelia spies a hideous version of herself grinning from the window of the crime scene, her face transformed into that of Bava’s undead medium. As the frightening footage washes over us we realize that Amelia has become the monster haunting her own home.

Babadook Disappointing

Though The Babadook functions as a straightforward horror story, many have interpreted it as a metaphor for grief and depression. In this reading, Mister Babadook becomes a manifestation of Amelia’s repressed trauma and inability to face the death of her husband. To make others more comfortable, she’s tried to “move on” by putting this tragic event out of her mind. She doesn’t talk about him and has locked all of Oskar’s possessions away in the basement. But as the anniversary of his death approaches, her mental distress starts to break through. Not only does Samual trigger agonizing memories but he has an understandable curiosity about the father he will never know. Unable to cope, Amelia goes to increasingly dangerous lengths to vanquish her sorrow no matter the cost.

Unfortunately this only makes the Babadook grow stronger. Eagle-eyed viewers will notice several scenes in which Amelia’s hands bear the tell-tale smudges of ink and charcoal. As a former author of children’s books, it’s a clear indication that a part of her subconscious has created this book in a desperate attempt to release the trauma she’s kept buried deep inside. She also spies the ghoul lurking in the home of her neighbor Mrs. Roach ( Barbara West ), a kindly old woman who remembers Oskar fondly and the only person to offer non-judgmental support. Disguised as an inescapable monster, Amelia’s mental illness tries to isolate her from the world and convince her that fighting back is futile. This repression only feeds the creature’s power, proving the book’s warnings to be true: the more Amelia tries to ignore the Babadook living in her own mind, the more dangerous it – and she – becomes.

The story climaxes with Amelia begging to know what the entity wants. As if in answer, Oskar emerges from the darkness in a recreation of the crash that killed him. It’s only by confronting the worst moment of her life – by looking directly at the pain she’s been trying to bury – that Amelia is finally able to unlock her sorrow. Kent sacrifices logic to evoke cathartic emotion and we watch as the Babadook screams at mother and child then races down the stairs to the basement. Fast-forwarding a couple of days, we see that Amelia has been visiting this captive creature every day to feed it bowls of worms. The monster emerges from the darkness and roars at Amelia, nearly knocking her down. But she claws her way back to reality and walks into the sunlight. It’s a poignant reminder that her grief will never truly go away. The only way to survive mental illness is to face the pain a little bit at a time and – with support from those we love – slowly work to take away its power.

ghostbusters samhain

Mental health metaphors have always been a part of horror, stemming back to foundations of the genre. Frankenstein may have been inspired by Mary Shelley’s traumatic history of pregnancy loss and Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper” has been interpreted as a metaphor for postpartum depression. More modern fare like Psycho (1960), Don’t Look Now (1973), Jacob’s Ladder (1990), and The Descent (2005) all tackle themes of emotional disorder and distress, but The Babadook seems to have kicked off a wave of introspective horror. In the past ten years, we’ve seen a wealth of filmmakers use tangible monsters to tackle the terrors lurking within our own minds. Films like Hereditary (2018), Saint Maud (2019), Swallow (2019), Daniel Isn’t Real (2019), The Night House (2020), and Mike Flanagan’s extensive work for Netflix all use genre tropes to show the horrific experience of living with various neuroses and psychological maladies that appear invisible to the outside world. The recent success of films like Smile (2022) and M3GAN (2022) – stories that wear their mental health metaphors on their sleeves – prove that this trend may still be gaining steam.

Many have tried to match the power of Kent’s moving film, but few have been able to capture the careful balance of visceral horror and poignant metaphor. The Babadook works on multiple levels, scaring us with the harrowing tale of a haunted house and tugging at our heartstrings with a relatable story of mother and child trying to find each other in emotional darkness. Some view the ending as too symbolic; it’s illogical metaphor too on the nose. Others appreciate the compassionate depiction of a flawed woman struggling to parent through the cloud of mental illness. I happen to fall into the second category. I feel seen by Davis’s compassionate depiction of Amelia and tear up every time I watch Samuel vow that no matter what happens, no matter how strong the Babadook’s pull, he will never leave her. Ten years later, I still cry when I watch The Babadook . But the tears feel good. They feel like healing.

Ghostbusters Spirits Unleashed celebrates Samhain with an update and Switch version

When Halloween was forever.

Samhain Ghostbusters Spirits Unleashed Ecto Edition

Illfonic has launched the latest update for Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed , which brings a nice set of goodies, but beyond that, they’ve also released Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed – Ecto Edition on Steam and Switch.

The most exciting feature of the update is the new Overlord Ghost. What’s exciting about that (besides the obvious)? Well, one of the skins you can unlock for it is none other than Samhain. If you aren’t hip to my jive, Samhain is one of the most beloved villains of The Real Ghostbusters cartoon. He was featured in one of the best episodes of the first season and then appeared multiple times throughout the rest of the show’s run. Despite being shown in the intro of Extreme Ghostbusters , he never actually appeared in the show proper, unfortunately.

Aside from that bit of news, there are two new maps as part of the update. The first is Petey’s Pirate Cove, which is a pretty awesome-looking amusement center. The other map is Galway Station. A subway station is such an appropriate addition. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one traumatized by the whole Ghost Train scene in Ghostbusters 2 .

Finally, there’s the new pack of cosmetics. This time, you can have your buster pack a DIY proton pack made of cardboardium alloy. That is to say, crafting supplies. I was sort of afraid that the game would get a deluge of weird cosmetics and that you’d eventually have trouble getting into the feeling of the movies. However, now that I think about it, I saw a tonne of pink-haired creations when I reviewed Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed , so I guess there’s no winning against the internet.

It’s pronounced sah-win, but don’t tell the actors that

The other bit of news is that Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed – Ecto Edition has launched on Switch and Steam. It might be weird to mention Steam here , but it’s because the game was previously an Epic Game Store exclusive. It is literally the only reason I have Epic Game Store installed, so, uh, not for long?

The Switch version is pretty neat for anyone who… only owns a Switch. Not for me, but here’s Illfonic’s write-up of the port.

“The team has been hard at work adapting the game for Switch. Performing at a dynamic resolution from a range of 720 (handheld mode) to 1080p at the maximum, 30fps (industry standard for Switch). IllFonic is constantly tuning the game to push its limits.”

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed is available on PC and consoles. The latest update drops today.

Samhain , also known as the Ghost of Halloween , is an antagonist in The Real Ghostbusters cartoon series and one of the few foes to face the Ghostbusters on more than one occasion. He is a strategic ghost with the ability to manipulate time in order to cause eternal night. Samhain also has the ability to control legions of ghosts at his command, but certain ghosts such as Slimer seem able to resist him to a certain extent.

Since his debut, Samhain has made many appearances throughout the Ghostbusters franchise, he was one of the ghosts to make a cameo appearance on the second opening theme song and even made an appearance on the Extreme Ghostbusters theme song and end song (though never appeared in any actual episodes). He also made numerous cameo appearances throughout the show. Samhain has also appeared in the Now Ghostbusters Comics in two comics, and made reference to in another, and has appeared in Teen Titans Go! as the Halloween Spirit .

He was voiced by the late William E. Martin.

Biography [ ]

Animated series [ ].

Samhain first appears in the episode "When Halloween was Forever". In this episode, he had been imprisoned in an ancient clock for centuries. Once the clock is brought to New York from Ireland, Samhain is soon released from his captivity by his two goblin minions on Halloween night. Once set free, he gathers all the ghosts he can and sends his minions all over New York. He also uses his powers to halt the night as he plans to make Halloween an eternal night that will last forever all over the world. The Ghostbusters however run all over town capturing his minions, to which Samhain confronts them out of rage. However, the Ghostbusters use his weakness against light to stun him and he is captured (along with his minions) just before the world falls under his evil reign forever. He is soon placed within the ecto-containment unit where it is assumed that he would stay.

For quite some time, Samhain remained in his prison. Where he seemed to get along with his fellow inmates (even playing a few card games with them as shown in "Partners in Slime"). Yet despite getting along with his fellow inmates, he never enjoyed being imprisoned. Samhain returns with an army of ghostly minions.

Samhain does return to face the Ghostbusters once again in "Halloween II 1/2" thanks to his two goblins releasing him again. This time Samhain's primary goal is to take revenge on the Ghostbusters for his long imprisonment. He summons more ghosts and quickly takes over the Ghostbusters headquarters, transforming it into his new fortress. The Ghostbusters managed to get everyone else and escape just before the headquarters completely transformed. The Ghostbusters attempt to use his weakness to light again, but Samhain puts up a protective barrier around the fortress that only other ghosts can pass through. Samhain then leads his minions around the town to search for the Ghostbusters, allowing the Jr. Ghostbusters to sneak in, yet Samhain returns and takes them hostage. The real Ghostbusters use a camera hooked up to Slimer and see that Samhain's fortress is held together by a timestone that is in the exact same place that the Containment Unit was in. The Ghostbusters attack Samhain in his fortress and blast the stone from outside the fortress while Slimer attempts to save the kids. After the Jr. Ghostbusters are gotten out, the timestone is destroyed, causing the the entire fortress to crumble and unveil the Containment Unit (which was left open after Samhain' escaped). With the Containment Unit still active, Samhain and his minions are sucked back into their prison.

Samhain reappears in Teen Titans Go! , initially addressed simply as the Halloween Spirit , voiced by Khary Payton. In order to defeat him in his debut episode, "Halloween", four of the Teen Titans use jack o'lanterns to shoot beams of energy at him while Raven slides a jack o'lantern under him to trap him in, in reference to the Ghostbusters' proton packs and ghost trap respectively. In "Halloween v Christmas", set a few Halloweens later, Samhain takes up residence in a squash instead of a pumpkin in an attempt to defeat the Titans, before joining up with them to defeat Santa Claus , who is attempting to take over all other holidays. In "Ghost With the Most", Samhain is then kidnapped by Beetlejuice during his attempt to take over Halloween.

Now Comics [ ]

Samhain also appears in the Now Comics Ghostbuster series. His first appearance is in issue seventeen, where he has been constantly chanting for many days. His chanting allows him to finally escape the containment unit and he takes Slimer, Janine, and Louis hostage. As his minions storm through New York, the ghostbusters team up with an ancient wizard and are successfully able to recapture him. Samhain then attempts to escape through more chanting, only to be stopped by a loud fog horn.

Samhain (and his previous crime) briefly appears in a flashback in issue eighteen, where Winston is remembering all the pain he's gone through as a ghostbuster.

Samhain returns once more in the second issue of the annual comic. In the annual issue, Samhain seemingly meets his ultimate demise when the Ghostbusters turn his plan to absorb more and more power against, causing him to explode into pieces. It is debated as to whether or not this is canon to Extreme Ghostbusters in which Samhain made a cameo in the opening theme. It is possible that after he was destroyed, he was somehow revived and the Ghostbusters were able to trap him again.

Personality [ ]

Samhain is a direct action type of character, led solely by his mission. Samhain believes that ghosts have been treated unfairly in this world due to people like the Ghostbusters. He is guided by a mission to give ghosts like him a world where they rule and humans are the less dominant ones. Unlike many villains the Ghostbusters have faced, he has compassion for the ghosts he commands as he refers to them as his "little ones." He is willing to enter a battle and protect his minions if he feels they are being harmed. However despite his compassion, he is willing to use some force if they do not cooperate with him, as he frightened Slimer when he refused to attack the humans and took him hostage when he recognized the close relationship between him and the Ghostbusters.

Powers and Abilities [ ]

As the Ghost of Halloween, Samhain is a very formidable foe for the Ghostbusters. Samhain is presumably a Class 7 ghost like Gozer as he is legendary and a number of ghosts seem somewhat terrified of him. Samhain possesses the ability to halt time and cause eternal night. He has attempted to use this power various times, but is always defeated by the Ghostbusters in the end and his spell is broken. Samhain also has the ability to control entire legions of ghosts, though it is unknown if he controls them himself or they obey him out of fear. The latter may be the most possible as Slimer seemed to drawn by force to him yet was not compelled to obey him. Samhain also possess an ability to fire black lighting, as he fired one (off screen) at Peter Venkman and the other Ghostbusters during their first encounter. His powers seem to be at their highest point on Halloween as the Ghostbusters were being overworked with a huge increase in ghost activity. Samhain's only real weakness seems to be captivity, as it is the only way to prevent him from halting the night forever. While captive, Samhain is virtually powerless to escape, though he can be released should his prison come in contact with a mobius symbol. He also can be warded off by light as a number of ghosts can. This weakness was used against him during his first encounter with the Ghostbusters and they attempted to use it against him during his second coming.

‘The Real Ghostbusters’ Samhain Coming to ‘Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed’

Ghostbusters

One of The Real Ghostbuster’s biggest and baddest enemies came from noneother than the spirit of Halloween himself. That’s right, Y’all. Samhain has all of our collective horror hearts for looking so damn cool. If you don’t recall, Samhain had a giant pumpkin head and wore a purple cloak. His job every year was to take hold of all the ghosties out in the world and become one with them all in the spirit of Halloween .

The first trailer for Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed Ecto Edition , introduces us to an all new Nintendo Switch version of the game as well as physical release that we can get our hands on later in the year. For the moment, there is no Samhain in the game, but the DLC that is lined up for the next couple of months is sure to see the return of the Halloween Ghost with the most. All that to say that Samahain is coming to Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed soon.

Of course, the trailer for Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed gave us our first look at Samhain. Or, at least it gave us a look at Samhain’s claw, slamming down on Ecto-1 and scratching the hood.

The synopsis for Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed goes like this:

In Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed , Ray Stantz and Winston Zeddemore open the Firehouse to you and the next generation of Ghostbusters. This asymmetrical game of hide and seek is a 4v1 setup where players will either play as part of a team of new Ghostbusters or a Ghost. This is one of many horror adaptations we have seen of beloved Disney characters that have hit the public domain. Winnie the Pooh is most recognizable here recently with the horror film Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey which was very successful financially and spawned a sequel that debuts this year. The Bambi and Peter Pan characters are getting similar treatment with their own horror films as well.

While some people are enjoying these new twisted takes on these classic characters, others are not as thrilled. What do you think about the situation? Should they leave the classic characters alone or should they have fun with it? Let us know in the comments below.

‘Friday the 13th’ Invades the ‘Doom’ Universe [Video]

Friday the 13th Doom

In an unexpected crossover, the worlds of “Doom” and “Friday the 13th” have collided, creating a gaming experience with loads of nostalgia. “Friday the 13th: Jason’s Doom” is a total conversion mod that integrates Jason Voorhees into the demon-infested universe of “Doom.”

At its core, this crossover is a blend of “Friday the 13th” and the fast-paced, action-packed gameplay of “Doom.” Players find themselves navigating the familiar yet altered landscapes of “Doom,” but this time, the terror is amplified by the presence of one of horror’s most iconic figures: Jason Voorhees.

The mod introduces unique gameplay elements that pay homage to both franchises. Players can expect the classic “Doom” combat mechanics, now intertwined with the survival horror aspects of “Friday the 13th.” The addition of Jason as either an adversary or a playable character (depending on the mod’s configuration) adds a new layer of strategy and fear to the game.

The game is currently still in beta  over at ModDB .

E3 Is Officially Dead – Shuts Down After Two-Decade Run as Video Game Industry’s Biggest Convention

e3 dead

E3, the once-preeminent gaming expo, has officially concluded its run. This marks the end of the Electronic Entertainment Expo’s long-standing reign as the gaming industry’s premier event. The Entertainment Software Association (ESA), under the leadership of President and CEO Stanley Pierre-Louis, made this decision after more than two decades of successfully hosting an event that was a pivotal showcase in both the U.S. and global gaming sectors.

The demise of E3 was precipitated by a combination of factors: the emergence of new competitive events, partner withdrawals, shifts in consumer habits, and disruptions caused by the pandemic. These challenges ultimately overcame the numerous efforts to rejuvenate the expo, which had been a fixture in the industry since its inception in 1995.

ghostbusters samhain

Pierre-Louis acknowledged the deep affection the industry, including gamers and creators, held for E3. He emphasized the shared sentiment but also noted the necessity of the closure in light of the evolving opportunities within the industry to connect with fans and partners.

“We know the entire industry, players and creators alike have a lot of passion for E3. We share that passion,” Pierre-Louis said. “We know it’s difficult to say goodbye to such a beloved event, but it’s the right thing to do given the new opportunities our industry has to reach fans and partners.”

E3’s story began as a response to the gaming industry’s marginalization at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The ESA established E3 as a dedicated platform for retailers to engage directly with game publishers and creators. This move was instrumental in recognizing the significant role of the gaming sector in technological innovation, artistic expression, and economic contribution.

Over the years, E3 evolved into a monumental event, generating major media headlines and serving as a stage for industry giants like Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft to unveil groundbreaking consoles like the Wii, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. It also spotlighted key figures in the gaming world, elevating them to celebrity status.

However, the landscape of gaming industry events has shifted significantly. Nintendo’s introduction of the “Direct” format in 2011, Sony PlayStation’s withdrawal in 2018, and the subsequent departure of other key players marked a turning point. The rise of alternative showcases like Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest and the annual Game Awards, which recently celebrated another year, further demonstrated the changing dynamics.

The last in-person E3 in 2019 attempted to revitalize interest by opening its doors to the general public. However, the pandemic accelerated the industry’s shift towards online news conferences, a format that many game publishers adopted with mixed results. Pierre-Louis, in a conversation with The Washington Post, recognized the evolving nature of the industry’s marketing and business strategies, highlighting the increasing direct access companies now have to consumers and business partners.

ghostbusters samhain

With the closure of E3, the gaming industry is exploring new avenues for engagement and showcase. Major companies are now focusing on individual events and collaborations with other industry happenings.

“There were fans who were invited to attend in the later years, but it really was about a marketing and business model for the industry and being able to provide the world with information about new products,” he said. “Companies now have access to consumers and to business relations through a variety of means, including their own individual showcases.”

Samhain is a powerful entity whose main goal is to destroy the barriers between dimensions, which would allow ghosts and demons to roam freely. This would give Samhain a potential army, as he has shown the ability to compel lesser entities to obey him in the past. We don’t have a lot of information about this being in our records, but we do know Samhain is not this entity’s true name — he keeps that secret to prevent any mortals from holding any power over him.

Where did Samhain come from?

Samhain first showed up in the episode “When Halloween Was Forever” from The Real Ghostbusters animated series. You can watch the episode right here, from the official Ghostbusters channel on YouTube.

Samhain

Samhain  is the Spirit of Halloween and a recurring enemy of the Ghostbusters in the cartoon series  The Real Ghostbusters . His name is derived from the Feast of Samhain, an ancient Irish festival that would evolve over time to become the modern holiday of Halloween. Samhain is stated to be an unstoppable creature of the night, commanding an army of ghosts and other supernatural creatures. He believes that such creatures have been eternally mistreated by humanity and wishes to exact vengeance on humans by casting the world into everlasting night, allowing ghosts to rule.

History [ ]

Samhain dates back to seventh century Ireland, where Halloween started out as the Feast of Samhain. It was recorded that he was an unstoppable creature of the night. At some point he was trapped in stone. Samhain remained imprisoned in an ancient clock for centuries. In the 1980s, the clock was brought from Ireland to New York to be on display in a museum. As a result, P.K.E. activity spiked. Two weeks later, Samhain was released from his captivity by his two  goblin  minions on Halloween night. Once set free, he gathered all the ghosts he could and sent his minions all over New York. He also used his powers to halt the night as he planed to make Halloween an eternal night that will last forever all over the world. The Ghostbusters however ran all over town capturing his minions, to which Samhain confronted them out of rage. However, the Ghostbusters used his weakness against light to stun him. Egon came up with a plan to use all the lights in the city on Samhain but a blackout occurred. While Peter, Ray, and Winston distracted Samhain and his minions with a frontal assault, Egon set up spotlights around the building he perched atop. He was captured (along with his minions) just before the world fell under his evil reign forever. He was placed into the Containment Unit where it was assumed that he would stay.

For quite some time, Samhain remained in his prison. Yet despite getting along with his fellow inmates, he never enjoyed being imprisoned. The next year after Samhain was captured, Dib Devlin used an illusion of Samhain on Ray and Winston in the second part of his game show Race the Devil.  It was a trick to fool the Ghostbusters into giving up. While revealing the fake Samhain, Dib said, "Why, it's an old friend of yours." "It's Samhain, the living embodiment of Halloween!" But during the battle, Ray realized they already captured the real Samhain. The real one was still in the Containment Unit. Once Ray realized this, he stood his ground and defeated the fake Samhain with his bare hands.

The next Halloween, Samhain was released from the Containment Unit thanks to his two goblins liberating him again. This time Samhain's primary goal was to take revenge on the Ghostbusters for his long imprisonment. He summoned more ghosts and quickly took over the Ghostbusters' headquarters, transforming it into his new fortress. The Ghostbusters managed to get everyone else and escaped just before the headquarters completely transformed. The Ghostbusters attempted to use his weakness to light again, but Samhain set up a protective barrier around the fortress that only other ghosts could pass through. Samhain then led his minions around the town to search for the Ghostbusters, allowing the Jr. Ghostbusters to investigate the fortress. The Junior Ghostbusters were chased by sentries and later caught by ghosts led by Samhain. The Ghostbusters used a camera hooked up to Slimer and saw that Samhain's fortress was held together by a keystone that was in exactly the same place that the Containment Unit was in. The Ghostbusters attacked Samhain in his fortress and blasted the stone from outside the fortress while Slimer attempted to save the kids. After the Jr. Ghostbusters got out, the keystone was destroyed, causing the entire fortress to crumble and unveil the Containment Unit (which was left open after Samhain escaped). With the Containment Unit still active, Samhain and his minions were sucked back into their prison.

Abilities [ ]

As the Ghost of Halloween, Samhain is a very formidable foe for the Ghostbusters. He is legendary and a number of ghosts seem somewhat terrified of him. Samhain possesses the ability to halt time and cause eternal night. He has attempted to use this power at various times, but is always defeated by the Ghostbusters in the end and his spell is broken. Samhain also has the ability to control entire legions of ghosts, though it is unknown if he controls them himself or they obey him out of fear. The latter may be the most possible as  Slimer  seemed to drawn by force to him yet did not seem to want to obey him. Samhain also possess an ability to fire black lighting, as he fired one at Peter Venkman and the other Ghostbusters during their first encounter. His powers seem to be at their highest point on Halloween as the Ghostbusters were being overworked with a huge increase in ghost activity.

Weaknesses [ ]

Samhain's only real weakness seems to be captivity, as it is the only way to prevent him from halting the night forever. While captive, Samhain is virtually powerless to escape, though he can be released should his prison come in contact with an infinity symbol. He also can be warded off by light as a number of ghosts can. This weakness was used against him during his first encounter with the Ghostbusters and they attempted to use it against him during his second coming.

The Junior Ghostbusters were trick or treating on Halloween night with Slimer. They stopped at a door and knocked. A woman answered with a bowl of candy ready. While she asked about their costumes, Slimer stuffed the bowl in his mouth. He then spit out an empty but slimed bowl. A tied up terrier barked at the Junior Ghostbusters and Slimer. The dog's bowl moved and a hand shoved it into the dog's face. It was one of Samhain's goblins. The terrier retreated into its doghouse but the second goblin rose up from beneath it. It then tossed the doghouse and dog away. The Junior Ghostbusters bumped into Samhain's two goblin minions and dropped their candy. Although the Junior Ghostbusters believed they are just kids in costumes, Slimer pondered about their real identity. Jason gave the goblins some candy as an apology, but they ran off into the night.

Slimer tailed the goblins and found out they dumped the candy into the bushes. Slimer presented the abandoned candy to the Junior's. It was decided they would follow the goblins even though Jason still wanted to trick or treat. The group ventured to the Ghostbuster's headquarters where they found the lights out and creepy faces looking at them. At first they were scared and backed away, until the lights went on and it turned out to only be the Ghostbusters and Janine in costumes. While everyone else started to party, Slimer danced with Janine but noticed the two goblins among the guests. They ran downstairs to the Containment Unit and locked the door from the inside. Slimer alerted the Junior's and they rushed downstairs. Slimer went in alone and saw the goblins messing with the grid. A burst of P.K.E. shot out of the Firehouse roof, prompting the party guests to leave. Egon, Peter, Ray and Winston went downstairs to investigate. However, they get down just after the goblins released Samhain from the Containment Unit.

Outraged that he was imprisoned, Samhain hurled an orb of P.K.E. into the wall. The energy caused the Firehouse to violently transform. The Ghostbusters retreated and hopped into Ecto-1 and narrowly escaped. The Firehouse then transformed into a ghostly fortress and Samhain placed up a protective shield that only ghostly beings could pass through, preventing the Ghostbusters from using light or Proton Streams against him. The more ghosts inside, the more powerful he and the shield became.

Outside the fortress, the Ghostbusters made a retreat as Samhain sent some ghosts after them. The Ghostbusters however managed to trap some of them using a Proton Cannon and Trap apparatus. Winston then created a smoke screen to brush off the rest. The Ghostbusters dropped the children off at their clubhouse. Back at the fortress, an angry Samhain decided to lead the rest of his minions to search for the Ghostbusters. The Junior Ghostbusters, now dressed in their jumpsuits, waited nervously for the Ghostbusters. A jerry rigged ghost detector started stirring all of a sudden. The Junior's headed outside and saw Samhain's army flying by and they decided to enter Samhain's empty fortress. They brought Ecto-Junior from the garage and headed out. Meanwhile, the Ghostbusters were finalizing their counteroffensive. Egon showed everyone the cosmic shape of the fortress and deduced all they had to do was change the shape and it would collapse.

The Junior Ghostbusters arrived at the fortress and encountered two of Samhain's minions. Donald managed to hold off the pair with a giant slingshot and pumpkin. However, they were soon captured by Samhain himself. Egon relented and announced he needed more data on the exact configuration of the fortress interior. Slimer was volunteered to acquire the intelligence. He was outfitted with a mini camera in his mouth so he could take it with him into the fortress. After he dodged various ghosts, Slimer discovered the captured children and Egon also saw a keystone. He explained it was the very spot where the Containment Unit used to be. He concluded that if it was destroyed, it would bring the entire fortress down. After they returned to the fortress, the Ghostbusters faced Samhain, who threatened to kill the children should they not surrender. After the Ghostbusters laid down their weapons, Slimer drew Samhain's forces while the Ghostbusters fired from a distance and hit them. Janine then activated the Proton Cannon and struck the keystone. Samhain is weakened by the damage done to the keystone and lack of ghosts to strengthen him.

Slimer was able to get the children out of the fortress using his own slime to allow them through the wall. The keystone then shattered and Samhain attempted to fight the Ghostbusters, but Janine used the lights on the Ecto-1 to stun him long enough for the fortress to crumble. Once the fortress crumbled, the Containment Unit (which was left open from Samhain's escape) was unveiled and Samhain was sucked back in. The Firehouse reappeared and the group continued their Halloween party.

  • Due to network directives, this turned out to be the most conservatively written episode by Hickey and McCoy. [9]
  • Hickey and McCoy simply wrote that Samhain would be sucked back into the Containment Unit at the end of the episode. Samhain's downfall was altered with Janine blinding him with light so that the Ghostbusters personally 'defeated' him. [10]

The Ice King Rises in Frosty New ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ Image

'Frozen Empire' drew inspiration from 'The Real Ghostbusters' weird and wild villains.

The Big Picture

  • Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire introduces new villains, described as wild, weird, and original.
  • The film draws inspiration from the 80s animated series and aims to bring its unpredictable energy to the big screen.
  • The movie explores the Firehouse setting in more depth, giving fans a glimpse into the everyday lives of the Ghostbusters.

There are so many returning franchises to get excited about this year. However, if you’re a horror fan, the first major hit on your P.K.E meter is Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire . The fourth entry in the mainline Ghostbusters series takes the team back to their roots in New York City. On top of that, while fans have been used to familiar ghouls like Gozer and Silmer, Frozen Empire is going to have a whole new batch of ghosts to bust . Frozen Empire has now released a new image, shared by Empire Magazine , which teases an upcoming villain for the movie. Director Gil Kenan also teased how The Real Ghostbusters influenced the latest spooky adventure . “Wild, original and weird-as-f**k villains,” is how the filmmaker described the new ghastly threats.

If you’re a fan of 80s cartoons, then this news is going to make you even happier. The original animated series, which was based on the 1984 classic , ran for seven seasons from 1986 to 1991 and took the concepts set up in the live-action films to their most cartoonish absurdity. That’s while still keeping the grounded “every person” feel of the universe. This was a series that had the iconic team go up against creatures like werechickens and the literal spirit of Halloween aka Samhain . Kenan aims to insert that same unpredictable energy into the film universe, saying, “We wanted to bring that show’s looseness and fearlessness to this movie. I think it’s going to surprise people just how big this film is.

The new “Sewer Dragon” that haunts the Ghostbusters Empire cover is a great example of that bold direction. The latest image of Frozen Empire ’s new big bad also gives fans a new frosty look at the “Death Chill” that has taken over NYC . While still not officially named, in traditional fashion, Funko has recently revealed the name of the Ghostbusters’ main enemy is Garraka . With the exapnisve new scope of Frozen Empire, it will be interesting to see how the " weird" new villains fit into the franchise's overall lore.

'Frozen Empire' Looks Beyond 'The Real Ghostbusters' for Inspiration

However, while The Real Ghostbusters has influenced the evil of Frozen Empire , the filmmakers have looked outside the franchise for inspiration for the Ghostbusters themselves. Producer Jason Reitman discussed the John Hughes references throughout the film , “That thing of a family in a station wagon, living in a crumbling home, the teenagers kicking back against their parents. ( Finn Wolfhard ’s) Trevor’s 18 now, so he’s like, ‘I’m an adult!’”

Wes Anderson was another notable influence with Reitman stating, “We wanted that Royal Tenenbaums thing of a family living on top of each other… but in the Ghostbusters’ Firehouse. We see the Firehouse way more than in any previous Ghostbusters film. What’s it like to sleep there, do laundry there? What’s the attic like?” That will have any Ghostbusters die-hard thinking of the 2009 video game which let fans explore the famous Firehouse to their heart's content.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire takes over theaters on March 22, 2024 , and will see two generations of ghost hunters united. This includes Wolfhard, Bill Murray , Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson , Annie Potts , Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd, Mckenna Grace, and Celeste O'Connor . Tickets will go on sale on Thursday, January 18th. Until then, you can view the latest Frozen Empire image below:

When the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second ice age.
