Germany joins small boats talks after Starmer pledge on ECHR

G ermany will hold talks on stopping the small boats crisis after Sir Keir Starmer promised not to quit the European Convention on Human Rights, The Telegraph can disclose.

Diplomatic sources said Berlin would play a full role in the discussions as part of Thursday’s European Political Community (EPC) gathering at Blenheim Palace.

The Labour Party’s cast-iron commitment to the ECHR and the Strasbourg-based court that underpins it was said to be behind Germany’s decision.

It had previously declined to join the first talks of a coalition to combat illegal migration led by Rishi Sunak and Italy’s Giorgia Meloni at the last EPC gathering because of the former prime minister’s flirtations with calls to quit the ECHR .

Labour’s ditching of the Rwanda deportation plan , which drew scorn from Emmanuel Macron, the French president, was also said to have improved Britain’s standing in some capitals.

Scrapping the policies are seen as a key pillar of the new Government’s strategy to “reset” relationships with the European Union after what Labour describes as years of tensions between Brussels and the Conservatives.

Sir Keir will host more than 45 European leaders at the Oxfordshire birthplace of Winston Churchill for discussions on continental security, including combating illegal migration.

It will be the fourth meeting of the EPC, a brainchild of Mr Macron, since it was formed in October 2022 in response to Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Prime Minister will join a discussion hosted by Ms Meloni and Edi Rama, the Albanian premier, at the gathering.

He is expected to use the opportunity to press EU leaders on his hopes to strike a returns deal for failed asylum seekers who have crossed the Channel.

A large number of countries are set to attend, including those historically more liberal on border controls.

But there is unlikely to be a formal set of conclusions from the meeting like the one secured by Mr Sunak at the EPC summit in Spain last year.

On that occasion the UK, France, Italy, the Netherlands, the EU Commission and Albania agreed an eight-point plan to tackle people smuggling.

It is understood that Sir Keir hopes to build on that deal rather than ditching it.

The Prime Minister believes that his pledge not to leave the ECHR has  made it easier for other countries, including Germany, to join the latest round of talks with the UK, diplomatic sources said.

Olaf Scholz, the German chancellor, has told colleagues that he is prepared to work with the UK to clampdown on illegal migration “within the framework of international law”, a source said.

And Mr Scholz was said to have “welcomed the Prime Minister’s commitment to re-setting the UK’s European partnerships”, according to a Downing Street readout of their meeting on the fringes of the Nato summit in Washington last week.

Ministers delighted at ‘statesman’ opportunity for PM

The Telegraph understands that ministers are delighted with the timing of the EPC so soon after their election victory because it gives an opportunity for Sir Keir to present himself as a statesman.

There will be three round-table discussions on Defending and Securing Democracy, Energy and Connectivity, and Migration.

Sir Julian King, the UK’s last EU commissioner and former ambassador to Ireland and France, said, “The Government will want to show it’s up for strengthened cooperation with our neighbours, across a range of shared challenges, including tackling Russian interference and sanctions circumvention. And also migration, the subject of one of the working groups.”

Radosław Sikorski, Poland’s foreign minister, said the EPC “can send the message that Britain is a European player in the security sphere”.

Uber launches more water services around Europe

Uber will soon be introducing its new water services this European summer season, with a boat, cruise and yacht offering.

More Uber products hit the waters

Uber recently announced even more water offerings which will feature at some of Europe’s popular tourist destinations this year. Uber Boat, which has already been established in London, Uber Cruise and Uber Yacht will be hitting the water this nothern summer season, in response to rising demand for Uber’s services in tourist hotspots around Europe.

According to the transport company , data from summer 2023 showed that a demand from international customers for Uber’s mobility services increased last year by up to 55% in places like Greece and Spain.

A boat, a cruise and a yacht

Uber Boat, which arrived in Mykonos earlier this month, will now expand to Athens, Corfu and Santorini. The boat is available to book on the app, with the company noting that the product will allow visitors to travel in style to beach clubs, visit scenic coves and reach remote locales. Minimum fares start from around €200 (R3 973).

Uber Cruise will launch in Paris this summer, allowing visitors to jump onboard an all-electric boat to enjoy a free one-hour private tour down the river Seine. Priced from €120 (around R2 360) per trip, the boat service can accommodate up to six people per trip.

Their final offering, Yacht, will then arrive in Ibiza in August and will offer groups of up to eight people cruises around the island in a Sunseeker Yacht for €1 600 (around R31 480).

Each eight-hour trip comes with a personal skipper, a complimentary bottle of champagne and locally sourced artisanal snacks.

Lori Harvey showed off a racy leopard-printed bikini on vacation in St. Tropez Tuesday, relaxing on a luxurious yacht as she soaked up the sun with her family.

The 27-year-old model and swimwear entrepreneur — whose father is comedian Steve Harvey — struck various poses while perched on a railing in some sizzling pics she shared on her Instagram Story .

The socialite shaded her face from the sun in a straw cowboy hat and accessorized with a pair of chic sunglasses, a diamond-trimmed gold Jacquie Aiche belly chain ($8,525), several ankle bracelets and chunky gold earrings by Fiery Jewelry ($65).

She enjoyed some music with her family on board, sharing videos of herself dancing and also taking a trip down a slide into the sea before rinsing off in an outdoor shower.

Although the Yevrah Swim founder didn’t appear to be rocking one of her own designs, she did make her Sports Illustrated Swimsuit debut this year in a Yevrah bikini, among other striking suits.

The SKN by LH skincare founder told SI Swim  that posing for the mag was a “dream come true.”

“I would say the three words that I would use to describe it would be manifested, surreal and perfection because it was literally a moment that I manifested,” she said.

According to the latest sales data, BYD accounted for nearly 3% of Japan’s EV market in the first half of 2024. And that’s after launching its first EV in the region just last year.
