In this Phantom 3 review we look at its innovative technology and features which make this drone the most popular on the market. In the past couple of weeks the DJI Phantom 3 has become even better value with lower prices. Further down this post, I have links to where you can get the best prices for the Phantom 3 Professional, Advanced and Standard models.
Even though, there are newer drones from DJI on the market, the Phantom 3 nevertheless has everything you would want in a drone. Many of the top aerial landscape filming on YouTube have been filmed with the Phantom 3.
The Phantom 3 is very powerful, highly responsive and will fly precisely to your commands. The integrated gimbal and camera greatly assist you to take professional aerial photos and film. Without doubt, the Phantom 3 is very impressive to fly and film with.
This Phantom 3 review with videos takes a close look at the flying and filming capabilities along with its features and improvements. The Phantom 3 flies longer; has a 4k UHD camera; a new Vision Positioning system; stronger GPS signalling and reliability; a totally revamped remote controller; massive improvement in precision flying with much improved responsiveness and performance from both the quadcopter and camera.
This post is quite old and while you can still find some Phantom 3 quadcopters available, the latest drones at low prices are pretty outstanding in comparison to the technology in the Phantom 3. You can also visit the DJI home page for their latest DJI consumer drones .

5 Intelligent Flight Modes
These flight modes make flying and filming with the Phantom 3 and filming very easy. DJI drones are build with safety in mind and the ‘Home Lock’ intelligent flight modes give you a great safety option in case of a loss of signal between the drone and your remote controller. The other four intelligent flight modes give you give many options for flying and filming. The 5 intelligent flight modes are;
- Points Of Interest
- Course Lock
Here’s a terrific video showing all flight modes. Pretty awesome.
High Definition FPV
The Phantom 3 increased FPV range and in high definition is made possible by the inbuilt DJI Lightbridge wireless transmission technology. The Phantom 3 uses a high powered quad antennae system which is constantly broadcasting the high definition video feed. This high powered antennae system also receives control commands from every conceivable direction.
The Lightbridge system with its high powered communication signals cuts through complex environmental interference and allows for greater flying distances which very few other drones on the market can achieve without large dishes and antennae.
With the Lightbridge integrated into the Phantom 3 quadcopter and the Remote Controller, it also takes less time to get setup. You’re flying in no time.
Live Stream FPV
Another tremendous feature on the Lightbridge FPV system on the Phantom 3 is that you can now stream live 720p video direct to YouTube. This is a terrific for live coverage of any event, where live feed is required. Now that’s impressive.
4K UHD Video Camera
This 4k Professional camera practically eliminates any lens distortion as it has been specifically designed for aerial photography and cinematography. It has an f/2.8 lens and a 94⁰ field of view which also eliminates the fish-eye view. This lens brings the most vivid colors to life which no other drone in this price price range can match.
This camera certainly is high tech with 9 separate elements, including two aspherical elements. The Phantom 3 Professional camera with its dual aspheric lens greatly reduces and practically eliminates spherical aberration and also reduces other optical aberrations such as asastigmatism, when compared to a simple lens which most other drones use.
The camera sensor uses the Sony EXMOR 1/2.3. It performs on-chip analogue/digital signal conversion and two-step noise reduction in parallel on each column of the CMOS sensor. Here an overview of some of the video settings:
Phantom 3 Professional Video Modes
- UHD: 4096 x 2160p 24/25, 3840 x 2160p 24/25/30.
- FHD: 1920 x 1080p 24/25/30/48/50/60.
- HD: 1280 x 720p 24/25/30/48/50/60.
Phantom 3 Camera Overview
- Lens: Field of Vision 94° 20 mm (35 mm format equivalent) f/2.8.
- Shutter Speed: 8s -1 / 8000s.
- Max Image Size.
- Single Shot.
- Burst Shooting: 3/5/7 shots.
- Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB): 3/5.
- Bracketed Frames at 0.7 EV Bias.
The camera on the Phantom 3 are huge improvements on any other drone on the market in this price range. Some of the best drone videos up until now where with the Phantom 2 and GoPro Hero 3 or 4 combination. Now imagine the quality of video with the Phantom 3 Professional camera.
Here’s a look at some terrific smooth flying and aerial cinematography over NYC. This is a terrific video as it shows both day and night filming. I have to say both day and night filming are impressive. Here are some more terrific and informative Phantom 3 drone videos for you to enjoy.
After viewing the below videos, here is another terrific article with 15 drone photography tips . These tips cover lens filters, filming in RAW format, the thirds grid, UAV forecast, auto exposure bracketing, counterpoints, juxtaposition, lighting, leading lines, creating depth in photos and much more.
Advanced 1080p HD Camera
If you buy the Phantom 3 Advanced model, it also comes with a fully integrated camera. The camera is also impressive and shoots 1080p video up to 60 frames per second. This camera has an enhanced sensor which gives tremendous clarity, focus and lower noise. It can also take 12 megapixel photos.
Phantom 3 Advanced Video Modes
The photo camera settings are very similar on both the Professional and Advanced models.
Top DJI Gimbal Stabilization
The gimbal makes the most difficult aerial photography seem easy. The gimbal and camera are easily controlled through the Remote Controller or DJI Go App.
- Gimbal Controllable Range: Pitch -90° to +30°.
- Stabilization: 3-axis (pitch, roll, yaw).
Phantom 3 – Very Easy To Fly
The Remote Controller has been practically re-designed specifically to make flying the Phantom 3 and capturing great aerial film easier. This Controller is more comfortable to hold with all the buttons fitting naturally to your touch.
There are now dedicated buttons to let you take aerial shots and also tilt the camera. It is now easier to and more automatic to fly the Phantom 3 with new features such as auto take off and a specific fail safe return to home button. The DJI Go App allows you to customize buttons on the Remote Controller to your liking.
Phantom 3 For Beginners
The Phantom 3’s intelligent flight system design makes this one of the easiest drones to fly with many features using just one touch of a button. With all the latest technology, the Phantom 3 processes information from multiple sensors. It calculates complex flying and stabilization parameters in real time giving you a care free flight.
Here are just a few of the controls which make flying the Phantom 3 a real joy:
Auto Ta ke Off : Just one simple tap in the DJI Go app allows your Phantom 3 to turn on its motors and rise to a preset height. It will then hover patiently in place (this drone is almost human) until you give it flying instructions.
Auto Return Home : If for some reason that GPS is not available, your Phantom 3 will remember the exact place it took off from. With one tap of a button on your remote control, you can tell your Phantom 3 to return home.
Fail Safe : If the Phantom 3 battery is running low or if the quadcopter loses its connection with your remote controller, the Phantom 3 will automatically return to the takeoff point.
Geofence Beginner Mode : The Phantom 3 has a special beginner mode which allows you to fly in a limited area. This is a GPS enabled geofence which is easy to setup and your quadcopter will only fly inside these limits.
Vision Positioning System (VPS)
3 new visual and ultrasonic sensors on the under belly of the Phantom 3 allow it to scan the ground and surroundings and identify its position and move accurately without the need of GPS. If you like to fly indoors, in high density forests or surrounded by tall buildings, then it is possible to lose GPS. These sensors allow the Phantom 3 to hold position and altitude in these environments without the need for GPS.
On the Phantom 3, there are 2 Ultrasonic send/receive sensors and 1 Optical flow camera sensor which make up the Vision Position System.
Ultrasonic sensors evaluate a target by interpreting the echoes from radio or sound waves. Active ultrasonic sensors generate high frequency sound waves and evaluate the echo which is received back by the sensor, measuring the time interval between sending the signal and receiving the echo to determine the distance to an object. The Ultrasonic sensor in the Phantom 3 basically ping the ground and receive back these measurements.
The optical flow sensors are vision capable and can measure visual motion. It then outputs these measurements to the IMU and Flight Control System. In the Phantom 3 the Optical flow camera sensor recognizes and calculates the horizontal movement.
The DJI Go App is easy to use, gives you everything you need to control the camera and change flight settings, all from your mobile device. This Pilot App is free and is updated on a regular basis. It has so many new features and camera settings. Here are just a few of the features within the DJI Go app;
- Video Editing Software: Assists you in compiling your best footage in seconds.
- Live Streaming: Send to YouTube a live stream of your flying in real time.
- Live Map: Allows you to track your Phantom 3 everywhere.
- Easy to use: The DJI Go app is intuitive and simple to understand. You have complete control at your fingertips.
- Complete camera control: All the camera modes and settings to photograph and film in any environment, condition or event.
- Automatic Flight Logs: Allows you to review all past flights, giving time, duration and a preview of the photos and videos you took.
- Advanced Flight Recorder: This system constantly records data from all of your Phantom 3’s internal mechanisms, which can be easily shared with the DJI support team if you ever have any questions or issues.
- Interactive Flight Simulator: You can practice flying your Phantom 3 and become a real professional pilot without going anywhere. The flight simulator gives you an almost real life experience of flying your Phantom 3 and using the remote controller.
- Flight Replay: Allows you to playback your flights in full. This playback includes the recorded map, flight telemetry and commands.
Professional Video Editing
The director software allows you to create videos quickly and share them instantly. Choose the best video moments or aerial photos from your flights and build a complete video including the ability to add music. This video editing software has professional templates which you can choose from. In other words, you don’t need to be a professional film maker to create videos.
Here is a terrific video where Eric Cheng of DJI discuss the Phantom 3 and its new features including ground breaking technology previously introduced in the Inspire 1 . Both Phantom 3 Advanced and Professional models are flown, with some testing of the new Vision Positioning System (VPS) and stabilization systems including filming some 4k video over beautiful San Francisco.
Phantom 3 Drone Review
Intelligent flight system.
The Phantom 3 flight system has been thoroughly upgraded giving you a magnificent flying experience. It contains the best and latest developments in flight technology. This drone has more power, and with precision responsiveness to your touch on the controls makes it a dream to fly. The flight system is the brains and central nervous systems of any drone. In the Phantom 3, the flight system consists of the Main Controller, Inertial Measurement Unit, GPS and Electronic Speed Controllers. All this technology gives you a better and safer flying experience.
Phantom 3 Powerful Main Controller
The Main Controller is responsible for processing and analyzing flight data in real time and needs serious power. The Main Controller is the central control center and brain of your Phantom 3. It collects data from the entire quadcopter, including motor speed, your GPS location, control command inputs, data from automatic sensors, and thoroughly analyzes it all to tell your Phantom 3 exactly how to behave at any given moment.
Precise GPS Signal And More Satellites
Through the DJI Go app, you can track the Phantom 3’s location on a live map and record your takeoff point so you can bring it back to you with the tap of a finger.
Intelligent 6-Axis Gyroscope
The latest highly advanced Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) technology on the Phantom 3 is responsible for its superb flight stability and very responsive flying. Inside the IMU, you will find a 6-axis gyroscope and an accelerometer which records and relays even the smallest changes in tilt and movement. It is constantly feeling and sensing, detecting the slightest changes and compensating for them immediately and automatically.
Motor speed is one of the most critical aspects to any flight. On the Phantom 3, each motor is managed individually by the Electronic Speed Controllers ( ESCs ). These ESCs on the Phantom 3 are bidirectional and relay vital motor speed information to the Main Controller while at the same time sending commands back to the motors based on your input. This stream of constant communication keeps the Phantom 3 extremely stable in flight, and also helps you achieve any flight maneuver from gentle pans to rapid acceleration.
Each motor has more power than any previous Phantom quadcopter. These more powerful motors give you the best flight experience possible. The brushless motors work with lightning fast Electronic Speed Controllers to make your Phantom 3 very fast, real agile, and so responsive.
These powerful motors give you the ability to speed up, quickly increase or decrease altitude, and stop immediately. The Aerodynamic self-tightening propellers help boost thrust and stay firmly in place no matter how you fly.
Air Breaking Mechanism
The Phantom 3 uses a powerful air braking mechanisms to stop and hover in place immediately as soon as you release the control sticks.
Intelligent Smart Battery
The Phantom 3 battery has higher voltage and more energy. This greater power combine to give a vastly improved and longer flight experience. This upgraded smart battery has built-in sensors and bright LEDs which let you know the status and remaining power of your battery in real time. Your Phantom 3 is continuously calculating its current distance from you and the amount of power needed to return, so you always know how long you can continue flying and when it is time to recharge.
Programmable Quadcopter With SDK
If you like to delve into the world of drone programming, here is your opportunity. You can d evelop your own app by using the DJI Software Development Kit. The Phantom 3 platform is fully open and allows you to program apps with great flexibility. DJI has a tremendous online forum and following so you can get plenty of terrific support if you need it.
Dji to stop support for some phantom models – is your drone affected.
Here’s some important news for longtime DJI Phantom users. The technology giant has announced the end of service (EOS) timeline for select Phantom drone models and their accessories.
Starting September 30, 2022, DJI will no longer provide maintenance or technical support for Phantom 2 (2.4G) and Phantom 3 4K drones and their accessories.
The company explains in a statement:
Subject to technological developments and changes in product usage requirements, each generation of electronic products has a fixed life cycle. To continuously provide you with premium products and service experiences, DJI regularly optimizes resource allocations to promote the development and application of new products and technologies. As of the date of service suspension, we will no longer provide you with services for these products involving product inquiries, technical support, and product maintenance. We apologize for any inconveniences this may cause.
It’s worth noting that DJI stopped manufacturing both these products in 2017. And for the past many years, the drone maker has been diligently providing support services for the aircraft. But now, the company’s recommendation to operators of Phantom 2 and Phantom 3 4K drones is to upgrade their aircraft.
If you are still using any of the above products, we sincerely recommend that you upgrade it to an alternative product of a new model, so that you can enjoy our more recent and improved technologies, and we can then continue to provide you with efficient service.
Back in 2019, Romeo Durscher, DJI’s then Director of Public Safety Integration, clarified that the Phantom line with the exception of the Phantom 4 Pro RTK had come to an end. And now, DJI’s stock of Phantom 4 RTKs is also starting to dwindle. The product is listed as “temporarily out of stock” on most retail websites but we did find it available for sale on DroneNerds .
Meanwhile, the reason why the drone maker is urging users to switch to an “alternative product” is that it considers the Matrice series as the future of enterprise aircraft, while enthusiasts and commercial users have a plethora of Mavic drones to choose from. DJI’s latest addition to its enterprise line is the M30, a high-performance drone that can fit inside a backpack .
The M30 series comes in two versions, the M30 and the M30T. The M30 model integrates a 48MP 1/2-inch CMOS sensor zoom camera with 5×~16× optical and 200× digital zoom, a 12MP wide-angle camera, 8k photo 4K/30 fps video resolution, and a laser rangefinder that can give the precise coordinates of objects up to 1,200 meters away. The M30T features an additional 640×512 px radiometric thermal camera.

DJI Phantom 3 Standard review: An entry-level drone that's much better than basic
The Standard is easy to recommend as an entry-level camera drone, and it's also an outstanding deal at its current $499 (£449 and AU$859) price.
- More than two decades experience writing about PCs and accessories, and 15 years writing about cameras of all kinds.
DJI's ready-to-fly Phantom 3 Advanced and Professional camera drones are remarkably simple to operate, which makes them great for people entering the hobby. What's not so great: their prices.
DJI Phantom 3 Standard
The bottom line.
To help out your poor credit card, DJI introduced the Phantom 3 Standard, a quadcopter that looks a lot like its linemates, but at $799 in the US, £649 in the UK and AU$1,299 in Australia, it costs hundreds less. Also, to celebrate the company's 10th anniversary, DJI has cut the price to $499, AU$859 and £449 with no end date set for the promotion.
At its price, the Standard is tough to beat. You might be able to find a quadcopter with similar features from someone else, but it won't be as polished a product -- from unboxing to flight -- as the Phantom 3 Standard.
The Phantom 3 Standard is the entry-level model.
That said, the Standard is the entry-level model and as such it has fewer features. For starters, it lacks the Visual Positioning System that the other Phantom 3s have that would have let you more easily fly it indoors without GPS. Similarly, the Standard uses only GPS for positioning outdoors, while the Professional and Advanced use GPS as well as GLONASS, a secondary satellite system for faster and more accurate positioning provided by GPS alone.
The biggest difference is its controller, though. The one that comes with the Advanced and Professional models features DJI's Lightbridge technology for better video image transmission between the sky and ground as well as having a range of up to 5 kilometers (3.1 miles).
In place of Lightbridge, the Standard's controller uses a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi range extender for transmitting the live view from the Standard to a mobile device, so the potential for a delay or loss of signal in the video downlink is greater. Plus, transmission range is cut down to a maximum 1,000 meters (0.62 mile). The remote controller operates on 5.8GHz frequency.
The Standard's controller.
Also, the higher-end controller has camera controls like buttons for starting and stopping recordings or taking snapshots in addition to two that are programmable. The Standard's controller is limited to an adjustment wheel for tilting the camera up and down with all other camera settings and controls handled via DJI's Go app for iOS and Android. There's also no discrete Return-to-Home button; one of the controller's switches can be used instead. ( Here's where you can see the full feature breakdown by model .)
As for the Standard's camera, it uses a similar distortion-free, 94-degree, wide-angle f2.8 lens to the Pro and Advanced, but it has a maximum recording resolution of 2.7K HD video at 30 frames per second. That's the same maximum resolution as the Advanced, however that model can also do 1080p at 60fps; the Standard taps out at 1080p at 30fps.
The Standard can also snap 12-megapixel photos in both Adobe DNG raw and JPEG formats. The Go app also lets you manually change shutter speed, exposure compensation and ISO and you can set it to do burst shooting, exposure bracketing and time-lapse photography.
The Go app works with the drone.
The Standard uses Phantom 3 Intelligent Flight batteries, which allow you to check the health of its individual cells via the Go app. This also means older batteries won't work. DJI claims flight times top out at 25 minutes. In my tests the quadcopter lasted 22 minutes with a mix of hovering and flying in light wind and factoring in time for takeoff and landing (which can be done automatically through the Go app). That's about average for this class of quadcopter and more aggressive flying or high winds will cut into that flight time.
To help you make the most of that time, the Standard has DJI's Intelligent Flight features including waypoint navigation, point of interest (POI) flight planning and a Follow Me function.
Waypoint navigation lets you set up a multipoint path for the drone to follow while you control the camera, while POI flight planning allows you to autonomously fly a circle around a subject, keeping it centered. Follow Me sets the drone to track your movement based on your orientation when holding the remote controller.
The modes are accessed by flipping down the S1 switch on controller's right side. You have to do it once you're in the air, so you'll have to be somewhat quick about setting up your shot as you'll be cutting into your overall flight time.
Video quality is fine. The gimbal keeps the camera extraordinarily stable even in high winds. Like most small-sensor cameras, the Standard's struggles with extreme highlights so you end up with blown-out details. It does a relatively good job of adjusting for lighting changes -- another area where these cameras can struggle. You may also notice some horizontal banding, which is a rolling shutter artifact that's common to these cameras as well.
Despite all of this, the video is generally very good, especially for the price. My biggest issue is that you're stuck with this camera. There is no option to upgrade it down the road and it can't be removed for handheld use.
Lastly, whenever you record a video, a compressed 720p version is stored to your mobile device. To help make the most of these clips, DJI built a basic video editor in to the Go app. You can use it to cut up your clips, gather them up and then combine them into one movie. DJI also included some style templates with music you can apply before you save. Then you can just share away.
There's a big gap in the camera drone market right above $250 to right around $700. The options in that zone either aren't as polished as DJI's Phantom 3 Standard, require an additional purchase of a camera like a GoPro or they're smartphone- or tablet-controlled and you have to buy a controller separately if you want that experience. That's what makes the Standard a good option even at $799, but it's a true bargain at its sale price of $499/£449/AU$859.

DJI Phantom 3 Standard Drone Specs & Price
DJI Phantom 3 Standard is the cheapest offering in its maker’s Phantom 3 series, which also features the Phantom 3 Professional and Phantom 3 Advanced . It has similar design as the other two and offers some of their features as well, although a number of the highly critical features on the more-expensive models are missing.

The Phantom 3 Standard retains the four-pylon design and the white colour that have become the signature for consumer drones in the popular Phantom series. The body is made mostly of plastic and measures around 23 inches from one wingtip to the other while weighing around 2.7 pounds.
It should not be too cumbersome carrying this quadcopter around for aerial photography.
The landing struts of the DJI Phantom 3 Standard can be found under its body as would be expected. The gimbal and camera are mounted on the undercarriage. The intuitive radio controller seen on both the Phantom 3 Professional and Advanced drones is missing here; in its place is a controller similar to that which came with the previous-generation Phantom 2 Vision+.
However, the Phantom 3 Standard controller is more of an upgrade over that of the Vision+ and comes with an internal rechargeable battery and no need for a separate Wi-Fi range extender.
Video and Image Quality
The DJI Phantom 3 Standard packs a camera that is less powerful than that on the Phantom 3 Professional but one that outdoes the unit on the previous-generation Vision+. The snapper is in the same class as the shooter that comes with the Phantom 3 Advanced, offering capability to record up to 2.7K videos.
The drone can be used to shoot 2.7K (1520p) aerial videos at either 30 or 24 frames per second (fps). The camera can record Full HD (1080p) videos at up to 48 fps and HD (720p) videos at up to 60 fps.
Like the other quadcopters in the same range, DJI Phantom 3 Standard features a lens offering field of view of 94 degrees to ensure the fisheye distortion that is commonly experienced in footage taken by some drones are prevented.
With Lightbridge technology missing, you will unfortunately not be able to do live streaming of footage on YouTube. The 2.7K camera can be used to snap up to 12-megapixel still images in JPEG and Adobe DNG RAW formats.
The controller that accompanies DJI Phantom 3 Standard has limited camera controls, so you will have to rely on the updated DJI Go app for most camera settings and controls. The new app is currently available for iPhones and iPads, while an Android version is expected to be available soon.
The consumer drone boasts intelligent flight features such as Follow Me, Point of Interest (POI) flight planning and Waypoint Navigation. It uses the latest Phantom 3 Intelligent Flight batteries that supposedly deliver up to 25 minutes.
But with DJI Phantom 3 Standard lacking discrete Return-to-Home button, it is advisable to initiate landing after 22-23 minutes in flight.
This quadcopter also does not have the Vision Positioning System that is available on the Professional and Advanced models. What this means is that it is not safe flying DJI Phantom 3 Standard in indoor environment and close to ground as a result of signal problem and lack of ground-scanning capability.
