The Ritz-Carlton’s Massive New 790-Foot Megayacht Just Hit the High Seas

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection is coming to fruition.

The American hospitality titan took delivery of its newest luxury cruise liner at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France last Friday. The 790-foot Ilma is the second vessel to join the Ritz-Carlton fleet, following the 623-foot Evrima , which hit the seas in 2022. The fleet will also include the 794-foot Luminara , which is expected to launch in 2025.

The delivery ceremony was attended by Ritz-Carlton execs, Chantiers de l’Atlantique representatives, Ilma captain Steve MacBeath, and more than 350 crew who will participate in a series of preparation cruises before the ship’s maiden voyage in September.

“Today marks the culmination of a shared vision and the relentless pursuit of excellence, a testament to the craftsmanship and dedication of all those involved,” Jim Murren, executive chairman and CEO of the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, said at the delivery ceremony. “We are deeply grateful to the exceptional teams here at Chantiers de l’Atlantique, whose hard work and passion have brought this vision to life.”

Named after the Maltese word for “water,” Ilma took two years of painstaking work to build. The 790-footer showcases a sleek, superyacht-inspired exterior by the folks at Finnish studio Aivan and an elegant, light-filled interior by British firm AD Associates. Some 224 spacious suites are thoughtfully positioned throughout, creating space for up to 448 passengers.

Each suite features floor-to-ceiling windows and private terraces that afford prime ocean views. As with sistership Evrima, Ilma has several larger, more luxurious suites for seafarers looking to splash cash. The top-tier Owner’s Suite offers just over 1,000 square feet of living space, an in-suite bar, and a chic dining area.

Ilma offers plenty of space for relaxing indoors and out. The ship is also brimming with lavish amenities, such as a marina, an expansive pool area, a spa with 11 treatment rooms, three distinct fitness spaces, and an outdoor cinema. In addition, the liner is home to five dining venues, seven bars, and a wine vault. The crew-to-guest ratio is almost one-to-one, too, meaning passengers can enjoy the personalized service one would expect of a five-star hotel.

Ilma’s maiden voyage from Monte Carlo to Rome is scheduled for September 2. The liner will then embark on more cruises to the Mediterranean and Caribbean, before sailing the North and Baltic Seas of Northern Europe during the 2025 summer season. What is a Superyacht?

A superyacht epitomizes luxury, sophistication, and indulgence on the high seas. These floating palaces are typically privately owned by ultra-high-net-worth individuals and offer unparalleled comfort and luxury. Superyachts are characterized by length, often exceeding 80 feet, and are equipped with top-tier amenities, advanced technology, and personalized services.

Distinguishing Yachts, Superyachts, and Megayachts:

  • Yacht: The term “yacht” is a broad classification encompassing various types of pleasure boats. Generally, any privately owned vessel used for leisure or cruising can be called a yacht. Yachts vary widely in size, style, and amenities, making them accessible to many enthusiasts.
  • Superyacht: As the name suggests, superyachts go above and beyond the typical yacht experience. These vessels are characterized by their immense size, extravagant features, and the ability to cater to the most discerning tastes. Superyachts often boast multiple decks, helipads, swimming pools, and lavish interiors.
  • Megayacht: The term “megayacht” is often used interchangeably with “superyacht,” but it generally refers to vessels exceeding 100 feet in length. Megayachts take luxury to the next level, offering even more space for amenities and customization. These floating wonders are a testament to the ultimate expression of maritime extravagance.

Superyacht Interiors:

The 2023 superyacht summer recap: Jeff Bezos is now king of the high seas

  • For billionaires and their celebrity friends, warm weather means it's yacht season.
  • Jeff Bezos recently debuted his $500 million megayacht Koru, which criss-crossed the Mediterranean.
  • Here's a recap of some superyachts that made headlines this summer — and the famous faces spotted on them.

Insider Today

Jeff Bezos made headlines in 2019 for a rare appearance partying at sea on David Geffen's yacht, the Rising Sun , with ex-Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein and model Karlie Kloss.

Four years later, Bezos is no longer Amazon's CEO, and he's spent the last few months earning a new title: king of the high seas. As 2023's yacht season comes to a close, it's clear that Bezos' brand new $500 million superyacht won the summer.

Many of the world's rich and famous have shied away from being spotted vacationing on yachts . Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav made that mistake early in the season, sparking backlash after hosting a lavish soiree overlooking a bevy of yachts on the French Riviera, just weeks after the Hollywood writer's strike kicked off.

But Bezos and his superyacht guests appear undaunted by coverage of their travels.

Bezos named his megaboat Koru, after a Maori symbol of growth (perhaps a reference to being the world's largest sailing yacht at 417 feet long) and new beginnings.

Koru took its maiden voyage to Gibraltar in April, and a flurry of photographed stops followed: In May, a shirtless Bezos and his now-fiancee Lauren Sanchez — who has a striking resemblance to the sculpture on Koru's bow — took the yacht for a spin off the coast of Spain, before sailing it to the Cannes Film Festival.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lauren Sanchez (@laurenwsanchez)

In June, Koru made its way to the Italian Riviera , where the couple posed for photos on the ship's deck. Then it stopped by the Italian island Capri, before posting up at nearby Positano, a cliffside town that's become a favorite of celebrities and travel influencers.

There, the yacht played host to an engagement party for Bezos and Sanchez , which reportedly drew guests including Bill Gates, Whitney Wolfe Herd, Ari Emanuel, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Just a week later, the couple was seen strolling the streets of Dubrovnik, Croatia, with Orlando Bloom, Katy Perry, and Usher.

Yacht season's runner-up: billionaire Barry Diller's Eos

Another highlight of this year's yacht season was the 305 foot-long Eos, owned by billionaire Barry Diller and fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg, which also had a busy summer criss-crossing the Mediterranean.

Related stories

A staple of superyacht season, Eos' 2023 summer schedule included an early stop in Mallorca , where Diller and von Furstenberg hiked with Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King; a trip to Greece where von Furstenberg visited with British Vogue editor Edward Enninful and Valentino cofounder Valentino Giancarlo Giammetti; and a stop on the Amalfi Coast where von Furstenberg snagged a picture with Kris Jenner.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Diane von Furstenberg (@therealdvf)

In August, the ship made its way to Croatia, where its owners dined with Hollywood A-listers Candice Bergen, Emma Thompson, and Jason Blum, as well as Diane Sawyer and Creative Artists Agency partner Bryan Lourd.

The Eos docked in Venice to end its summer season, where von Furstenberg hosted the annual DVF Awards — and began furnishing one of her dry-land residences.

Not too far away in Venice's harbor was Maìn, Giorgio Armani's yacht, on which he hosted guests like Sydney Sweeney and Kerry Washington as part of his One Night Only fashion event earlier this month.

Many of the world's other famous superyachts — and the folks who frequent them — appear to have largely avoided the public eye this summer.

"In a world of long-lens constant paparazzi, there is a place for relaxed privacy that many of us take for granted," a longtime superyacht employee, who requested anonymity to speak candidly, recently told Insider.

That's likely the privacy that Geffen is enjoying on the Rising Sun, the yacht where Bezos was photographed a few summers ago — and on which Geffen infamously self-isolated in March 2020.

While the ship has been keeping a low profile this yacht season, it's reportedly been spotted in Capri and Mallorca , though without its typical celebrity entourage on board. Most recently it made a splash in a place not typically known for attracting the world's most expensive crafts: Portland, Maine.

Real time world map for tracking yachts and all other vessels like speed boats, cargo or tankers! Tracking yachts and other vessels was never so easy!

The Need for Speed: Exploring the World’s Fastest Superyachts

In the realm of luxury yachts, where luxury knows no bounds, there exists a class of vessels that stands apart – vessels that blend luxurious living with exhilarating speed. Welcome to our exploration of “The Need for Speed: Exploring the World’s Fastest Superyachts.” In this exhilarating journey across the high seas, we unveil the marvels of modern engineering and design, showcasing a selected group of superyachts that defy convention with their remarkable velocity. From cutting-edge propulsion systems to breathtaking top speeds, join us as we delve into the world of high-performance yachting, where luxury knows how to pick up the pace.

Cutting-Edge Propulsion Technologies in World’s Fastest Superyachts

Conventional diesel engines.

Many superyachts, even the fastest ones, are powered by conventional diesel engines. These engines typically run on marine-grade diesel fuel. They use a system of pistons and crankshafts to convert the energy from diesel combustion into mechanical power, which turns the yacht’s propellers. These engines are reliable and fuel-efficient, providing the necessary power for cruising.

Gas Turbine Engines

Some high-performance yachts, especially military and custom-built vessels, use gas turbine engines. These engines are known for their exceptional power-to-weight ratio. They have the ability to provide a high amount of thrust, which results in impressive speeds. Gas turbine engines are often used in combination with other propulsion systems or in hybrid setups for improved efficiency.

Hybrid Propulsion Systems in Fastest Superyachts

In recent years, there has been a trend towards hybrid propulsion systems. They combine traditional diesel engines with electric motors and batteries. These systems offer greater flexibility, allowing yachts to operate in all-electric mode for silent and emission-free cruising at lower speeds, and then switch to diesel power for high-speed operation. Hybrid systems are more environmentally friendly and can improve fuel efficiency.

Waterjet propulsion is a technology commonly used in high-speed yachts. Waterjets draw water into the yacht and expel it at high velocity through a nozzle at the stern. This system provides excellent maneuverability, shallow draft capabilities, and reduced vibration, making it suitable for fast and agile yachts.

Pod propulsion systems, such as those manufactured by companies like Volvo Penta and Caterpillar, involve the use of pods (outdrive units) that are mounted below the yacht’s hull. These pods can rotate, providing thrust in various directions, resulting in increased maneuverability and efficiency. They are often used in combination with diesel engines for both power and control.

Advanced Hull Designs

Beyond propulsion systems, the hull design of a yacht plays a crucial role in achieving high speeds. Yachts with planing hulls are designed to lift out of the water at higher speeds, reducing hydrodynamic drag and allowing for increased velocity.

Crafting the Perfect Propulsion Strategy for Fastest Superyachts

The selection of a propulsion system for a superyacht is a multifaceted decision that hinges on several critical factors, including the vessel’s size, intended purpose, and the preferences of its owner. Each propulsion method comes with its unique set of advantages and trade-offs, making it crucial to tailor the choice to suit the yacht’s specific requirements. Moreover, it’s not uncommon to witness a synergy of multiple propulsion systems within a single yacht, a testament to the industry’s dedication to optimizing both performance and efficiency. The pursuit of the perfect balance between speed, range, maneuverability, and environmental impact underscores the meticulous craftsmanship and innovation inherent in the design and engineering of these high-speed marvels.

Top 10 largest explorer yachts in the world

Helipads. Dive centres. Ice-breaking hulls. Submersibles. What makes an explorer yacht? True to their name, explorer yachts are well equipped to take on adventurous journeys to the most far-flung places in the world. Equipped with a long-range and vast storage capacity for food, fuel and water to enable weeks at sea, expedition yachts are increasingly popular with owners wanting to leave behind the popular Mediterranean and Caribbean cruising grounds for more challenging adventures. We round up the top 10 largest explorer yachts in the world, starting with a new entry from German shipyard Lürssen...

Spread across an impressive eight decks, Solaris was designed by Australian designer Marc Newson and hit the water for the first time at the German yard in February 2021. While nothing has been made public about the project, images of the superyacht show a large helipad, sun deck and spacious beach club aft.

More about this yacht

More stories, octopus | 126.18m.

Originally built yacht for the late Paul Allen, one of the founders of Microsoft, Octopus  is one of the most famous explorer yachts in the world. The yacht has the capacity for two helicopters at the same time, with landing pads on the aft deck and foredeck. The helipad on the aft deck also has a hangar to store the helicopter away in big seas.

Octopus also has an internal dock, which is perfect for storing the toys that every explorer yacht should have. When the dock is filled with water a 20 metre submarine and a tender of similar size are able to float in and out of their chocks. Once they are secure the water is pumped out before the yacht gets underway.

Paul Allen and the crew of Octopus used the yacht as part of an eight year search for a sunken ship. In 2015, they discovered the long-lost wreck of Japanese ship Musashi , which sunk during the Second World War.

Sporting exterior design by Frank Neubelt, Luna is famous for a low aft deck that sacrificed interior volume in favour of more space for sunbathing. The swimming pool takes centre stage and made headlines for being the largest ever seen on a superyacht at the time of delivery. Elsewhere, the yacht features two tender garages, a gym and an expansive beach club wrapping around a spa, with a steam bath, plunge pool and sauna. Two helipads sit on the upper deck while the entire lower deck is dedicated to the crew. Luna is ice-classed and built to the highest possible standards, allowing her to travel to the far reaches of the world's oceans.

Revealing ‘K’: A 131-Foot Superyacht That Merges High Architecture with High Seas

superyachts in high seas

In an innovative blend of architectural brilliance and nautical elegance, London-based studio, led by Nigerian artist and designer Miminat Shodeinde, has launched its debut superyacht concept, aptly named “K”. This 131-foot vessel captures the essence of Japanese design while showcasing the studio’s signature architectural prowess.

Founded in 2015, Miminat Studio has built a reputation for merging art and design in residential and hospitality projects. With “K”, Shodeinde extends this vision to the maritime world, creating what she describes as a “floating sanctuary.”

Shodeinde’s inspiration for “K” comes from the tranquil aesthetics of Japanese design. “When conceptualizing the K yacht, Japanese design principles felt like a natural reference point,” she shared with Robb Report. “I envisioned a serene floating sanctuary characterized by clean lines, wabi-sabi-inspired materials, and a calming color palette.”

While the design is deeply rooted in Japanese minimalism, “K” will be brought to life with the meticulous craftsmanship that Italy is famed for. This fusion results in a yacht that is not just a vessel but a moving masterpiece. The studio describes “K” as “a vessel for art and a masterpiece in and of itself.”

superyachts in high seas

With a generous interior volume of about 300 GT, “K” boasts an expansive and luxurious interior layout. The main deck houses the owner’s suite, offering privacy and panoramic views, while the lower deck accommodates a VIP suite and three additional double cabins, ensuring ample space for guests. The crew quarters are thoughtfully positioned on the lower deck as well.

The main deck also features a salon that embodies Japanese serenity, complete with a lounge area, a well-appointed bar, and a dining space that seats ten. Ascending a spiral staircase leads you to the upper deck, which includes the helm station and an alfresco dining area perfect for social gatherings.

The exterior of “K” is designed for both relaxation and luxury. The aft deck is a standout feature, with its two-level design centered around an infinity pool that cascades from one level to the next, creating a stunning visual effect. The bow is equally inviting, with a plush lounge area and a firepit for cozy evenings at sea.

“K” is engineered to balance style with performance. With various engine configurations available, the yacht is expected to reach a top speed of 25 knots and cruise comfortably at 16 knots. While the design may seem more suited for calm waters—given its minimal hardtop, hull cutouts, and open aft deck—its aesthetic allure is undeniable.

In “K”, Miminat Shodeinde has crafted more than just a superyacht. It’s a floating testament to the studio’s artistic vision and a new benchmark in luxury marine design.

The Largest Top 100 Superyacht Launches of 2023

By Frances Flannagan

This year has seen an exceptional array of superyachts launched, from complex refits to technically advanced new builds. We take a look at six of the largest launches of the year, according to Superyachts.com’s Top 100 list of the largest yachts in the world.

Ranging from 90 to 145 metres in length, the five largest yachts launched in 2023 have certainly set the bar high for future launches. Three of the five largest yachts launched this year are Lürssen builds, as the German yard once again prevails as an esteemed industry leader. Freire Shipyard and Oceanco have also launched two exceptional vessels in 2023.

145m - LUMINANCE

Builder: Lürssen

LUMINANCE was launched in February 2023: a highly anticipated project marking Lürssen’s eighth largest build. Her exterior design has been penned by Espen Oeino, marking the thirtieth collaboration between the designer and the shipyard.

Her details have been kept tightly under wraps throughout her build process and following her launch, however she is said to have an internal volume of 9,000 GT and a beam of 20m, whilst bearing a steel hull and aluminium superstructure.

According to Superyachts.com’s Top 100 list, LUMINANCE ranks as the 12th largest yacht in the world, marginally behind the Egyptian presidential yacht EL MAHROUSA which has an LOA of 145.7m.

140m+ - Project ALI BABA

Despite an unintentional launch earlier this month due to a technical fault at her dock, Lürssen once again stunned the industry with the unveiling of the 140m+ Project ALI BABA.

Whilst details of her build, design and specifications remain tightly under wraps, Project ALI BABA showcases a sleek, low grey profile, an elongated stretching bow, and two helipads. The industry had long awaited more news of ALI BABA’s build, as she was last seen in May 2022 during transport to begin her assembly. Following this unexpected launch and disruption, she is still on track to be delivered to her owner in 2024, recently moved to Lürssen’s Hamburg facilities for completion.

With her official length still yet to be confirmed, Project ALI BABA will likely sit 16th in the Superyachts.com Top 100 largest yachts in the world, just behind Lloyd Werft's SOLARIS.

In August, Lürssen launched its highly anticipated 122m JAG. She features an exterior design by Nuvolari Leanard: a sleek and sophisticated profile, with monochromatic black and white tones accented with splashes of red. Reymond Langton penned her interiors, and whilst they have not been revealed, we can only assume that they are just as eye-catching as her exterior design.

She can accommodate up to 20 guests across 11 staterooms with a crew of 40. She boasts exceptional space onboard, with a beam of 17.8m, making her a highly comfortable vessel.

JAG ranks as the 32nd largest yacht in the world according to the Superyachts.com Top 100 list.

114m - Project COSMOS

Project Cosmos was technically launched in March, known otherwise as Project 13759. Her first sighting was a highly exciting moment for the industry as, like LUMINANCE, little information has been revealed about the vessel.

She has an interior volume of around 6300 GT, a beam of 18m, and a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. Notably, she is the first Lürssen superyacht to feature new fuel cell technology that significantly reduces emissions by avoiding greenhouse gases, contributing to a more sustainable superyacht future.

Her technical launch revealed that Project Cosmos features a large aft deck and swimming pool, alongside a cut-out that we can presume will house a tender.

According to Superyachts.com’s Top 100 listings, Project Cosmos ranks as the 45th largest yacht in the world.

112m - RENAISSANCE

Builder: Freire Shipyard

RENAISSANCE was launched this year as Freire Shipyard’s new flagship motor yacht and the largest yacht ever to be built in Spain. Bannenberg & Rowell oversaw her exterior and interior design, of which her interiors boast neutral colours, tactile furnishings and highly usable spaces.

She has six decks and can accommodate 36 passengers in 19 luxurious cabins. RENAISSANCE features a double-height dining saloon, a beach club and al fresco dining opportunities on four of the decks. She promises the ultimate relaxation retreat, with stunning views and a range of treatment rooms and salons, as well as an expansive beach club showcasing the latest water toys.

Currently, she is the most expensive yacht on the charter market, with a starting price of three million euros a week in low season with Burgess. RENAISSANCE sits just behind Project Cosmos on the Top 100 list, ranking as the 47th largest yacht in the world.

105m - 1050H

Builder: Oceanco

Superyacht standards were set very early on in 2023 with the launch of Oceanco’s 1050H on the 10th of January. She was one of the industry’s most closely-guarded secrets: neither a newbuild, refit, or conversion, representing a fundamental rebuild of unprecedented scale.

1050H is a heritage superyacht that has been completely transformed: the first vessel that has been recreated to such an extent that no single element remains the same. She has a modern exterior aesthetic, with an entirely new superstructure, and with interiors penned by Reymond Langton Design.

The Dutch yard commented: ‘At a time when yachting is increasingly mindful of the impact on the planet, bringing an existing superyacht up to date with contemporary standards can have as much, if not more, of a positive effect as a sustainable new build.’ This highlights the importance placed on sustainability, showing 1050H to be an exceptional vessel beyond aesthetics and performance.

1050H ranks at 63rd on the Superyachts.com Top 100 list.

2023 has been a remarkable year for superyacht launches, in particular with the emphasis placed on sustainability and future-proof design. These five vessels set the benchmark not only for 2024 launches, but for future yachts in general, as they all exude not only exceptional aesthetics and amenities but highly complex and innovative technical features.

"At a time when yachting is increasingly mindful of impact on the planet, bringing an existing superyacht up to date with contemporary standards can have as much, if not more, of a positive effect as a sustainable new build." Oceanco Shipyard

Cybersecurity giant Kaspersky to shutter all US operations after the government banned its software nationwide

Eugene Kaspersky looking pensive in a chair

NEW YORK (AP) — Cybersecurity firm Kaspersky says it’s shutting down all of its operations in the United States, just weeks after the Commerce Department  banned the use of the company’s software  in the country.

Kaspersky will “gradually wind down” its U.S. operations starting July 20, according to a statement from the Moscow company. Positions based in the U.S. will also be eliminated, the company said, without immediately confirming how many employees would be let go.

“Kaspersky has been operating in the U.S. for close to 20 years, contributing to the nation’s strategic cybersecurity goals by safeguarding organizations and individuals in the country from ever-evolving cyberthreats,” Kaspersky stated. “The company has carefully examined and evaluated the impact of the U.S. legal requirements and made this sad and difficult decision as business opportunities in the country are no longer viable.”

Last month, the Commerce Department announced a ban on sales of Kaspersky software in the U.S. The government arguing the company’s Russian connections pose an “undue or unacceptable risk to U.S. national security or the safety and security.”

Aside from Kaspersky’s obligation to abide by Russian law, its software can be exploited to identify sensitive data of U.S. citizens and make it available to Russian government actors, the department said in a  decision  dated June 14.

Kaspersky has vehemently denied that it is a security threat. In a June 21  response to the Commerce Department’s decision , the company said it cannot deliberately obtain sensitive data on Americans and that its operations and employees in Russia can only access aggregate or statistical data not attributable to a specific person.

The company also argued that the government had based its decision on the “geopolitical climate and theoretical concerns” rather than independently verifying risk. Kaspersky said that the decision by the U.S. would benefit cybercriminals, while also diminishing consumer choice.

The department said it had considered Kaspersky’s objections to the initial findings of its investigation, but found that the decision to ban its software was “well supported.”

Kaspersky boasts one of the world’s most popular consumer antivirus products and a research unit widely respected for routinely exposing elite hacking groups. In the company’s announcement this week, Kaspersky said its “business remains resilient” and that its priority to “protect our customers in any country from cyberthreats” was unchanged.

Journalist Kim Zetter first  reported  the news of the company shutting down its U.S. operations on Monday.

In Hazard Services, users evaluated gridded wind, wave, and visibility forecasts, as well as analyses of synoptic features, creating a polygon “hazard” area in a format that can automatically be imported into navigational display systems. Similar gridded forecasts will be available for freezing spray forecasts. Hazard Services is an ongoing project at GSL to streamline the process of issuing warnings for forecasters across a variety of phenomena. Currently, software for winter weather, severe weather, and hydrology have been rolled out to NWS operations.

Participants were from NHC’s Tropical Analysis and Forecast Branch, the Ocean Prediction Center, and the Honolulu Weather Forecast Office. Overall, the workshop was a success. Forecasters gained familiarity with the software, and potential challenges and bugs were discussed. Through the conversations with the forecasters and other researchers, GSL is developing plans for continuing their research-to-operations transition for Hazard Services.

With the feedback from the workshop, GSL hopes to have another evaluation of the Hazard Services high sea products in winter 2024-2025.

The NOAA National Weather Service (NWS) Marine Weather Services Program offers a broad range of marine forecast and warning products in graphical and text format. The NWS provides forecasts and warning services for the coastal waters along the mainland of the continental U.S., the Great Lakes, and the Offshore and High Seas waters of the North Atlantic and North Pacific Oceans.

‘Unsavory’ in Fullerton offers a taste of food politics

Curator Jac Alva has conceived an unorthodox exhibit at the Muckenthaler Cultural Center in Fullerton.

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

Delicious food can give us so much. Besides providing sustenance and nutrition, it can bring joy and happiness. Food can be associated with memories and comfort, and it can teach us about our history or where we come from.

But the problematic and often destructive ways food is sourced in modern society can also leave a bad taste in one’s mouth. “Unsavory,” a new exhibit on view at the Muckenthaler Cultural Center in Fullerton, explores these issues. .

“I used to think about food as this very kind of neutral topic,” said curator Jac Alva. “We watch cooking shows, we gather and we eat, but we don’t think about how food is so often implicated in inequity, violence and disparities.”

McDonald's lunch boxes are part of Curator Jac Alva's "Unsavory" exhibition at the Muckenthaler Cultural Center in Fullerton.

Several years ago while completing her masters program at Azusa Pacific University, Alva analyzed a banana installation by Honduran artist Leonardo González at Muzeo Museum and Cultural Center in Anaheim. The work inspired Alva to take an academic and artistic approach to food.

“I realized food, to me, can no longer be neutral. In order for us to survive, so many times we are relying on those inequities, that violence, relying on other people’s misfortune in order for us to have food on the table.”

Alva has gathered the work of 15 artists who use fine art, photography, low-brow imagery and recycled art to challenge what we value when it comes to food consumption and, more importantly, what we don’t. Food is political, and “Unsavory” is designed to highlight the economic devastation caused by food waste, social injustices like the lack of healthy food options or access to nutrition education, and scarcity felt within food-insecure communities.

Alva addresses America’s dependence on sugar and her own struggles with artificial sweetener with a series that uses packets consumed by Alva herself to create collages that substitute expletives for traditional logos.

One of the pieces in the "Unsavory" exhibit is by curator Jac Alva.

“This showcases this relationship I have with sugar, where I am addicted to it and I try to ween off of it by using artificial sweeteners, but I still seem to have the same problem,” said Alva.

Nearby, “Deplorable Food Freek,” a three-paneled work from graphic artist Greedy King, shows a landscape of nauseating depictions of food production, distribution and consumption from farm to fast food table.

“This is a play on Hieronymus Bosch’s ‘Garden of Earthly Delights,’ only instead of a depiction of heaven and hell, in this case he is taking what is occurring in the food industry and he is slightly perversing it,” Alva said. “But there is an element of reality in all three pieces.”

“Deplorable Food Freek,” a three-paneled work from graphic artist Greedy King.

With the work of Allison Bergman and Marcelle Sirkus, authors of “Food Not Food,” real and natural food is photographed next to its artificially manufactured and processed counterparts.

“They are trying to educate the public about nutrition and about why it is we see things as food, when they are not because they are over-processed,” said Alva.

In one image, a ripe Red Delicious apple stands next to a red corn-syrup-lacquered candied apple. In another, a pile of French-cut green beans transitions into a pile of green licorice bites.

Contrast is a key element to “Unsavory.” The familiar is made unfamiliar, like with “Genetic Carnage” from Recycled Propaganda that uses the Chiquita banana logo but replaces the fruit in Miss Chiquita’s hat with hand grenades and arms her with a gun. Delicious-looking sculptures of snacks made from resin and polymer clay by artist Matthew Percale look like a frosted pieced of cake with blue icing, a soft-serve cone or an appetizing banana, but the tangle of earthworms within them prove repulsive.

A rendition of the Chiquita banana logo is part of "Unsavory" in Fullerton.

An installation from Fransico Palomares brings attention to the plight of the food vendor by converting a mobile food cart into a vehicle for selling oil paintings of fresh fruit and piñatas.

“Street food vendors have to go through so many different issues, from the weather and the elements to the bureaucrat nightmare of trying to be a vendor and trying to sell food, also trying to adhere to health and safety inspections.”

Among the most powerful pieces in the exhibit is a service industry project from Ohio-based artist Morgan Bukovec, in which food isn’t even visually present. One hundred guest checkbooks are nailed to the wall, with sexist sayings cross-stitched on them for a piece titled “Are You on the Menu?”

Each check has a remark, command or question that male customers said to Bukovec during her time working as a server and bartender.

“Some of them are microaggressions, some of them are very blatant statements and some are extremely unsavory,” said Alva. “We are coupling this with an installation where you can share your story on a blank guest check. We are letting people express how they feel about this work but also share their own story.”

“Are You on the Menu?” by Morgan Bukovec at the "Unsavory" exhibit.

Alva maintains that the piece emphasizes the idea that food is political and even the experience of dining out can be hard to stomach when you consider all the complexities involved in the labor that makes restaurants possible.

“I think it is really important that we don’t shy away from understanding and empathizing with people that are in the service industry and the things that they face,” said Alva.

Events planned in conjunction with the exhibit include a book-signing with Bergman and Sirkus on Aug. 1 and a Q&A with artist Tony J. Smith on Aug. 8.

“Unsavory” is on view at the Muckenthaler Cultural Center in Fullerton in the Main Gallery until Aug. 30, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Photo taken Tuesday, April 5, 2022. The partially retired Huntington Beach Generating Station consists of four generating units but only unit 2 is still in commercial operation as a legacy unit and has an extension to operate through the end of 2023, issued by the California State Water Boards. Unit 2 runs to support peak demands and has a net output capacity of 225 megawatts. The 644 MW combined cycle gas turbine generator, shown in blue and white, began operation on June 25, 2020. Environmental groups have fought Poseidon, arguing that it is privatizing a public resource, has failed to adapt an old proposal to new state ocean protections from killing sea life and that the company is trying to fill a need that doesn't exist, uses too much natural gas energy. Environmental justice activists say water rates could be raised as much as $6 per month. Supporters say ocean desalination as an inexhaustible, local supply for a region that imports much of its water from increasingly unreliable, distant sources. Another stumbling block for Poseidon is state requirements to mitigate the project's harm to the marine environment. Poseidon would draw 106 million gallons a day of seawater through the huge offshore intake pipe, which would be screened, and use reverse osmosis membranes to rid the seawater of salt and impurities. That process would produce 56 million gallons a day of brine concentrate - roughly twice as salty as the ocean - which would be dumped back into the Pacific via a 1,500-foot discharge pipe equipped with outfall diffusers to promote mixing and dilution. The intake and discharge operations will take a toll on plankton, which plays a crucial role in the marine food chain, killing an estimated 300,000 microscopic organisms a day. (Allen J. All-girl Scout troop from Brunswick takes to the high seas for adventure camp

BRUNSWICK, Ohio -- When the Boy Scouts of America opened its membership to young women, it didn’t take long for Medina County girls to join the ranks.

That includes Troop 7407, whose members recently returned from Sea Base, a National High Adventure Base of the Boy Scouts of America located in the Florida Keys.

Troop 7407 is one of the first all-girl troops in Northeast Ohio and the first girl troop in the Great Trail Council to experience the adventures at Sea Base.

Ten Scouts and six leaders were split into two crews that spent their days and nights aboard the Misty Shoals and Dream Weaver sailboats.

They learned to navigate the coastal channels and sail the open water of the Keys under wind power -- and the watchful eyes of their captains, Brian and Sheryl.

It was just this kind of adventure that steered these girls into what was once an all-male Scouting organization.

Mikayla Karla and Elena Turner said they had several reasons for joining BSA rather than Girl Scouting. The motto of “By Scouts For Scouts” resonated with them.

“I joined Girl Scouts for a year or two, but it just wasn’t what I wanted,” said Mikayla.

“When my brother joined Cub Scouts, I saw that it was more interesting. And when I heard they were accepting girls, I was really excited.”

Elena also tried Girl Scouts, “but there wasn’t really a lot to do.”

Elena enjoys all the art-related badges and projects she can do in the BSA in a wide variety of media.

“We get to camp out once a month, not just once a year,” Mikayla said, “and that’s a lot better.”

Each month, the troop also does service projects.

“We rehabilitated a fire ring at Camp Butler. We replaced all the logs, trimmed the trees, removed debris and redid the whole thing” Mikayla said.

They also have volunteered at Danbury Senior Living and at the St. Ambrose flag retirements and 911 ceremonies in conjunction with the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

They have also signed on to help maintain the children’s garden at Heritage Farm for the Brunswick Area Historical Society, starting in August.

John Turner, co-chair of our High Adventure Committee, came from the Youngstown area to Brunswick.

An Eagle Scout himself -- following in his dad’s footsteps -- he said: “When I found out that BSA was opening to girls, in 2019 my daughters started looking around. But then the pandemic came and everything came to a halt.”

Once life became more normal, they had four or five girls join, and now there are about 16 to 18 girls in the troop, he said.

There are four High Adventure Camps in Scouting each summer, and the girls chose Sea Base.

Turner said that while the boats were moored or anchored at night, the crews slept on deck and cooked their meals at sea.

The girls learned to set anchor, hooked mooring buoys, raised and lowered sails, read navigation charts, steered their vessels and kept their gear tied down.

Frequent stops at coral reefs gave the Scouts a chance to use their snorkeling skills to explore the underwater ecosystems.

Among the schools of sergeant major fish and brightly colored parrotfish, passing sea turtles, barracudas and groupers appeared.

Flashes from brightly colored fish, too numerous to name, were punctuated by unforgettable sightings of a sea cucumber, nurse shark and moray eel.

While en route to Sea Base, the girls visited an alligator farm and rode an airboat through the Everglades wetlands and mangrove channels, spotting wild alligators, herons and egrets.

They stopped to enjoy fruit smoothies and milkshakes at the “Robert is Here” fruit stand, a local market with a wide variety of tropical fruits, nuts, preserves, hot sauces and cold refreshments.

They enjoyed a visit to the coral nursery lab at Brinton Environmental Center on Summerland Key, where they learned about ongoing efforts to restore Florida’s coral reefs.

At the center, the girls were shown how corals are grown, cut and mounted on ceramic plugs that are implanted on damaged corals to speed their recovery.

A final stop at The Turtle Hospital in Marathon gave the Scouts an in-depth appreciation for the plight of sea turtles affected by pollution or injured by boat propellers and fishing equipment.

Here, the rescued turtles undergo surgery and rehabilitation before being released back into the ocean.

With a new appreciation for the coral reef ecosystem, the girls embarked on a five-night coral reef sailing adventure at Sea Base.

They earned the Captains Club Award, the Duty to God Award and the Snorkeling BSA Award.

“Perhaps more importantly,” Turner said, “they endured the sun, high waves, strong wind and a few storms.

“They have come home with an expanded view of life at sea and below the waves, and will never forget their Sea Base adventure.”

Troop 7407, for girls 11-17 years old, meets each Wednesday year-round at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 15, 716 W. 130th St. in Brunswick.

They will hold an open house there from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sept. 11.

Thanks for tuning in to our live coverage, that's all for today.

Here are the key events from the day:

  • President Zelenskyy said Ukraine had halted Moscow's forces completely in the Kharkiv region;
  • Germany looks set to halve its military funding for Ukraine next year;
  • Crimea and Russian Black Sea ports were targeted by Ukraine overnight;
  • The EU's president dubbed Viktor Orban's visit to Moscow an "appeasement tour";
  • Mr Zelenskyy appealed for European unity, defence systems and diplomacy during a visit to Blenheim Palace in the UK.

Five people have been killed and three injured in Russian attacks on the Donetsk region, prosecutors have said.

A woman and her husband were killed in artillery shelling in the village of Pleshchiivka, the general prosecutor's office said.

Another three women were killed in a strike on private buildings in the village of Hrodivka, it added.

Separately, the Russian military dropped two guided bombs on the village of Velyka Novosilka, injuring a man and his wife inside their house, while another man was wounded in an artillery strike in the town of Zalizne.

In April this year, the US finally approved a long-awaited aid package worth some $60.8bn (£49bn) in aid to Ukraine.

Included were vast quantities of much-needed weapons and ammunition meant for the frontlines - which Kyiv had been desperately calling for for months.

So how have they impacted the war?

Nichita Gurcov, Eurasia analyst for Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project  (ACLED) told Sky News it may actually have pushed Moscow to act quickly and launch fresh attacks.

"It may have prodded Russia to step up its offensive to claim as much ground as possible, before the arriving weapons make it harder," he says.

Russia resumed its offensive in October last year after fending off the latest Ukrainian attempt to cut the land corridor to Crimea, Gurcov explains.

"By mid-February [this year] Russia secured the Avdiivka stronghold and has been since pressing toward Ukrainian logistical hub in Pokrovsk," he said.

ACLED has counted the number of settlements gained by Russia in each month of the conflict.

Five were taken in February, but just two in March.

In April (the month the US aid package was announced), seven settlements were captured, followed by nine in May and 11 in June - highlighting a clear increase in Russian offensive action.

"The sharp increase in the number of claimed settlements in May is due to the Russian re-invasion of the northern Kharkiv region," Gurcov explains.

"It could have pursued - diverting Ukrainian forces from elsewhere - but so far has been contained," he adds (see 11.40am post).

Another indicator of increased fighting is the number of reported battles, according to ACLED:

"The sharp increase in fighting in April and the subsequent near-50% increase in May is an all-time high since the invasion," Gurcov notes.

"The spike is only partially due to the re-invasion of the Kharkiv region as we are recording steadily intensifying offensive in the Donetsk region," he adds.

Closing arguments in the trial of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich will be heard in a Russian court tomorrow.

Mr Gershkovich attended a trial session for a second day behind closed doors today - more in our 8.10am post on that.

The 32-year-old was arrested in March last year while on a reporting trip. Authorities claimed, without offering any evidence, that he was gathering secret information for the US - which he, his employer and his government all vehemently deny.

Russia will not rule out new deployments of nuclear missiles in response to the planned US stationing of long-range conventional weapons in Germany, Moscow's deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov has said.

Russia regularly threatens Europe and the US with the nuclear option in public.

"I am not ruling out any options," the Interfax news agency said he told reporters in the Russian capital when asked to comment on the US deployment plans.

Washington said last week it would start deployment in Germany from 2026 of weapons that will include SM-6, Tomahawk and new hypersonic missiles in order to demonstrate its commitment to NATO and European defence.

Interfax cited Mr Ryabkov as saying that the defence of Russia's Kaliningrad region, which is wedged between NATO members Poland and Lithuania, was a particular focus.

"Kaliningrad is no exception in terms of our 100% determination to do everything necessary to push back those who may harbour aggressive plans and who try to provoke us to take certain steps that are undesirable for anyone and are fraught with further complications," Mr Ryabkov said.

Readers have been sending in their questions to our senior correspondents and military experts for their take on the changing battlefield environment in Ukraine.

Today, Ross Tregembo asks:

Is there a possibility of internal dissent within Putin's inner circle leading to his removal from power?

Moscow correspondent Ivor Bennett   replies:

"Not right now, no. This seems extremely unlikely for a number of reasons.

"Firstly, Vladimir Putin has just started a new presidential term, keeping him in the Kremlin for another six years.

"The potential political jeopardy of an election has evaporated and his approval ratings are near record highs (85% according to the independent Levada Center), helped by Russia gaining the upper hand on the battlefield in Ukraine.

"So there's no overt public support for a change at the top.

"Secondly, who would succeed him? His refusal to pick a successor all these years has been deliberate, and a key factor in preserving his power.

"Thirdly, his potential rivals are focused elsewhere.

"Look at what’s happening at the ministry of defence and the series of corruption scandals. By replacing his long-time ally Sergei Shoigu as minister of defence, Putin seemed to open the doors to a full-on purge of the military’s top brass.

"Analysts say this was a deliberate ploy to play his rivals off against each other - security services vs the military. By doing that, they're less likely to take a shot at him.

"Yes, it's only been a year since his authority was challenged like never before, with the Prigozhin-led uprising. But fast-forward 12 months and his grip on power appears stronger than ever."

A Russian court has sentenced US citizen Michael Travis Leake to 13 years in prison on drug smuggling charges, the court service has said in a statement.

Mr Leake, a musician and former US paratrooper - who was arrested in June 2023 - was found guilty of selling drugs on a large scale, the court service said.

It was not clear how he pleaded.

He is one of about a dozen Americans currently held in Russian detention - alongside Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, whose trial continued today (see 8.10am post).

Another American, Robert Romanov Woodland, was sentenced by a Russian court to 12-1/2 years for drug smuggling earlier this month.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's desire to create "a true European Defence Union" if she is re-elected shows the mood in Europe is one of militarisation and confrontation, the Kremlin has said.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the plans reflected Ms von der Leyen's "changing priorities" and said her proposals gave a "military colouring" to the EU.

Mr Peskov told reporters that her proposal "confirms the general attitude of European states to militarisation, escalation of tension, confrontation and reliance on confrontational methods in their foreign policy".

"Everything is quite obvious here," he added.

One more line to bring you from Volodymyr Zelenskyy's address at Blenheim Palace - concerning Russia's progress in northern Kharkiv.

When trying to convince leaders to help with Kyiv's air defence capability, the president said Ukraine had halted Moscow's forces completely.

"We have stopped the Russian advance on Kharkiv - period," he said.

"Putin has sacrificed tens of thousands of his citizens but has achieved nothing significant," he added.

"This was made possible by the bravery of our warriors and the bravery of our partners, who have lifted limitations on the use of Western weapons along our border," he added.

Russia launched a surprise attack on Vovchansk in the Kharkiv region in May, opening up another front for Ukraine to defend.

Moscow's troops made rapid progress in the days immediately after the incursion, before being slowed by a stubborn Ukrainian resistance.

Reports earlier in the week that Russian operations were winding down in the area resulted in Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denying the claims yesterday.

"This operation is ongoing, it will continue until it has been successfully completed," he told reporters.

The Admirals Look Nervous: Can Putin Stop the Collapse of Russian Naval Power?

Summary and Key Points: The Russian Navy, once the largest "blue water" force, has struggled since the Soviet Union's collapse, operating mostly as a "green water" navy. However, Russia is now focused on high seas operations. Admiral Alexander Moiseyev announced that the Navy is on track to receive 12 warships by the end of 2024, including Borei-class submarines.

-Despite challenges like the fire-damaged corvette Provorny, which is being rebuilt, the Navy is pushing forward with sea trials and new ship deliveries.

-While large surface combatants face issues, Russia's smaller warships remain potent, signaling a potential resurgence in naval capabilities.

From Green Water to Blue: Russia's Naval Expansion Plans

During the Cold War, the Soviet Navy maintained the largest "blue water" force in the world, but since the end of the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Moscow has struggled to maintain a force that is little more than a "green water" navy – unable to truly operate vessels around the world. Even as it sent a guided-missile frigate and nuclear-powered submarine to make a port-of-call visit to Havana, Cuba , this month, the flotilla required that it be supported by a tug and a replenishment ship!

Yet, after years of being essentially a second-rate naval power, Russia is again focused on the high seas. The Kremlin's top naval official announced on Tuesday that the Russian Navy is on track to receive 12 warships by the end of 2024 and those will include blue water surface vessels and submarines. State media outlet Tass reported that the Russian Navy has taken delivery of 40 surface warships and 24 submarines in just the past decade, a vast improvement as only three submarines were received a decade before.

"According to (this year's) plan, we are implementing the program of 50 various ships, vessels, (and) boats. The main ones are 1st rank ships, distant sea zone warships, and nuclear submarines. This year we hope to receive twelve such warships," Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Alexander Moiseyev told reporters.

Sea Trials Coming

The Borei-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine Knyaz Pozharsky is among the new vessels that will be soon entering service. The submarine – named after the Russian prince Dmitri Pozarsky, who led the Russian forces during the Polish-Muscovite War (1611-1612) – is expected to begin its sea trials in the coming months before being commissioned to the Northern Fleet, likely sometime next year.

Moiseyev added that the Russian Navy's current plans further call for sea trails of the new vessels in the Baltic and Caspian Seas.

"It is important to note that we plan to complete the construction and trials of patrol ships also of the ice class. There are four submarines, including two nuclear ones," said Moiseyev.

New Corvette To Enter Service for Russian Navy

The naval chief was present at the Severnaya Verf Shipyard in St. Petersburg, attending the floating out ceremony for the Project 20385 corvette Provorny , the second of a planned class of six updated Stereushchiy - class corvettes . The lead vessel Gremyashchiy was commissioned in December 2020 and is currently active with the Russian Navy's Pacific Fleet.

Provorny was laid down in 2013 but was subsequently damaged in a fire in December 2021 . Instead of scrapping the vessel, the Russian Navy opted to rebuild it , and it is only now being floated out.

"Today is a remarkable event for the Severnaya Verf Shipyard and for the Navy. Today we are floating out the Project 20385 first serial-produced next-generation corvette Provorny . The Project's lead ship, the corvette Gremyashchiy built by your enterprise, was accepted for service with the Navy a bit earlier," the Russian Navy chief added. "This ship that will enter service with the Navy in the immediate future, as was the case with the corvette Gremyashchiy, will considerably boost the potential of the Pacific Fleet's naval force and will faithfully serve its Fatherland."

Moiseyev did not mention the losses to the Russian Navy's Black Sea Fleet, nor did he address when (or even if) the flagship aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov would be returned to service . During its lengthy refit, other nations have launched far more capable carriers – putting into question why Moscow bothered in the first place.

While its large surface combatants remain little more than holes in the water in which countless rubles have been thrown, the fact remains that Russia's smaller warships should be seen as capable vessels armed with heavy hitting weapons. It may not be a true blue water fighting force yet, but the Russian Navy shouldn't be dismissed out of hand.

Superyacht Lady Lara gym

Just five years ago, superyacht gyms were often overlooked as an afterthought. Designers were left to pen in a lonely treadmill with a few standalone dumbbells in an extra stateroom designated as the “gym.”

Yachting has since evolved to embrace a more holistic lifestyle on the water. Owners and guests are prioritizing health and wellness more than ever before, making gyms a core design feature, typically paired with a spa.

But it isn’t as easy as just slotting a gym into the design. There are multiple hurdles, from space limitations to ensuring the equipment can stand up well to salty environments.

“ Over the past decade of designing yacht gyms, we have noticed that the space allocated to wellness and fitness has become much larger,” Edward Thomas, managing director at Gym Marine, told Robb Report. “Owners are opting for wellness decks that mimic the wellness suites in luxury hotels, allowing for the development of much more advanced workout spaces.”

Here are nine of our favorite workout centers aboard different types of superyachts. Most have fully equipped gyms with a Jacuzzi and wellness spa to boot, while others are simple spaces with ocean views.

‘Project X’

superyachts in high seas

Project X has recently joined the charter scene and is keeping clients happy with its endless facilities, as well as the pretty cool gym found on the sundeck. Launched last year, this 289-footer by Golden Yachts has several lifestyle amenities. Onboard guests will find not one, but three Peloton bikes, treadmill, elliptical training machines, as well as a reformer pilates machine. For functional workouts, there are medicine balls, yoga mats, and resistance bands. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows and doors on all sides can be opened if a session calls for a gentle sea breeze.

Heesen ‘Sparta’

superyachts in high seas

Launched last summer by Heesen, the wellness area of Sparta was given a vast amount of real estate—an impressive 699 square feet. Designed using natural colors for a serene and Scandinavian-style backdrop to a workout, the gym includes Gym Marine equipment customized by Winch Design with the yacht’s logo. The yacht also has a stunning spa (pictured) with a beautiful hot tub in its center. The space can ideally be used for a massage and relaxation post-workout.

‘Lady Jorgia’

superyachts in high seas

It’s only fitting that what was thought to be the biggest brokerage deal in history comes complete with a gym. The 377-foot Lady Jorgia was recently sold this year as Ahpo . And while the gym probably didn’t seal the deal, it certainly may have helped. Designed by Venice-based Nuvolari Lenard, the vessel focuses on health and family living, hence the extra-large gym found on the sky lounge deck. Most of the equipment is by Technogym, with bikes by Peloton and the added luxe of custom-made dumbbells from Gym Marine. The subtlety of the red-lacquer furniture throughout adds an extra layer of chic.

‘Kensho’

superyachts in high seas

Admiral’s 246-foot Kensho is all about striking features, from the green-blue metallic paint job to the lower deck infinity pool. So it isn’t a surprise this continues inside with the modern gym. It is a welcome addition to the other wellness offerings onboard, alongside the natural materials on the floors and walls. This well-equipped gym is brimming full of machines, featuring both Technogym and Peloton.

‘Octopus’

superyachts in high seas

Another gym in prime position can be found onboard the 412-foot  Octopus . The gymgoers can enjoy the sweeping sea views within the 430 square feet of fitness space. Double doors to the exterior allow for alfresco sessions if desired. Adjacent to the gym is a spa area, including a sauna and hammam for post-workout relief. Aside from the gym, intrepid charter guests can enjoy an array of other activities onboard this ice-class explorer.

‘Nero’

superyachts in high seas

With aesthetics from the golden age, the 296-foot Nero by Oceanco combines its classic roots with modern-day technology. The gym crowns the top of the yacht, boasting panoramic views and space for outdoor training sessions. The high ceilings make it easy to pump iron while the area is filled with multiple machines from Technogym, including a Kinesis, treadmill, cross trainer, and bike. Combining the Jacuzzi with a massage can soothe tired workout muscles.

‘Lady Lara’

superyachts in high seas

Appearing at the recent Monaco Yacht Show for sale for the first time was Lady Lara. The 298-foot Luerssen was penned by Reymond Langton Design, with a brief to prioritize wellbeing. Until now, the interior offerings have been kept on the down low; inside are plenty of wellness amenities, including the gym with wraparound panoramic views. The gym is part of the larger wellness center, complete with a hammam, massage room, and beauty studio. For a new owner, the workout space is ready to go, kitted out with bikes, rowing machines, treadmills, and power plates.

‘Dar’

superyachts in high seas

One of the world’s largest charter yachts, the 295-foot Oceanco Dar was delivered in 2018 with an interior design by Nuvolari Lenard. The brief, inspired by a hammerhead shark, for a slender exterior came courtesy of Luiz de Basto. The idea was to blur exterior and interior with extensive use of glass. The gym has all the necessary equipment for a real workout, with the addition of custom-made weights.

‘Cloudbreak’

superyachts in high seas

Delivered in 2016 by Abeking & Rasmussen, the 246-foot expedition Cloudbreak was designed by Espen Øino, with Christian Liaigre responsible for the interiors, inspired by a mountain chalet. The owner wanted a yacht to complement an active lifestyle, which included cruising around to find the best surf and ski spots. The gym is located at water level, with a drop-down terrace in the perfect position for a workout at water’s edge.
