Production [ ]

In an interview with A Podcast Named Scooby-Doo! , Tim Sheridan confirmed that Warner Bros. requested Flim-Flam and Scrappy not be in the film. However, both were taken into consideration by Sheridan while writing the script, and Scrappy was ultimately cut from the film due to not fitting into the story Sheridan wanted to tell. They also requested toning down of any truly supernatural elements, making the movie's stance on the paranormal more ambiguous. [1]

Bogel and Weerd were supposed to have cameos as monks depicted in the Temple's artwork. It is unclear if this was implying they were living monks all along or monks who died and became ghosts. [2] A possible reference to them, however, was the dark spirits in the flashback of Asmodeus' imprisonment in the Chest of Demons by Vincent and Mortifer. The spirits tried to get their hands on the Chest of Demons and release the ghosts to serve them, but Mortifer sacrificed himself to them so Vincent can take the Chest away, although this was all revealed at the end to be an illusion by Mortifer himself.

Notes/Trivia [ ]

  • The opening sequence features a narration from Vincent Van Ghoul in a somewhat similar style to his narration in opening sequence to The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo .
  • Maurice LaMarche reprises his role of Vincent Van Ghoul from the unrelated TV series Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated .
  • This is the second direct-to-video movie, and the first direct-to-video movie since ' Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island ' that doesn't have the 'Special Thanks to Joe Ruby and Ken Spears' credit at the end.
  • The same idea of Fred being away at camp to explain his lack of knowledge of Flim-Flam was previously used in Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated .
  • In this particular movie's continuity, only the events of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! , The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo , and Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island have occurred (which is ironic given the presence of Easter eggs from other incarnations). This ended up being contradicted by the next movies , which are sequels to this one, by having callbacks and characters from a variety of previous movies and shows, including Scooby-Doo and the Reluctant Werewolf , A Pup Named Scooby-Doo , Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? , The New Scooby-Doo Movies , Aloha, Scooby-Doo! , Big Top Scooby-Doo! , Scooby-Doo! Stage Fright , and Scooby-Doo! & Batman: The Brave and the Bold .
  • This direct-to-video movie marks the first time since Scooby-Doo! Stage Fright where Daphne Blake lacks a headband.
  • The events of the original 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo happened the previous summer, or two, ago.
  • Sheridan considers Captain Ferguson of the Bermuda Triangle Ghosts to be the 12th Ghost, and he serves as such in the continuity of the film.

Miscellaneous [ ]

  • Disguises : Shaggy and Scooby as monks.
  • Scooby Snacks bribe : 2 for Scooby and Shaggy.
  • "Ruh-roh" count : 1.
  • "Zoinks" count : 3.
  • "Jeepers" count : 0.
  • "Jinkies" count : 1.

Adaptations [ ]

  • This movie inspired the seventh level of the game app Scooby-Doo! Mystery Cases , which is called The Mysterious Chest of Demons .

Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches [ ]

  • None known.

Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities [ ]

  • Scrappy was cut out of flashbacks in the opening credits, as if he never existed, only for Flim-Flam to contradict this retcon by still mentioning him, anyway, which is then followed by Velma not knowing who he was talking about.
  • The two ghosts not mentioned are Zomba and Nekara .
  • Perhaps due to a misunderstanding, the Mystery Flying Machine is renamed to the "Flying Mystery Machine".
  • The gang are under the assumption that Farmer Morgan is wearing a mask, but don't think to try and unmask Mrs. Malvo .
  • It's unknown why Mrs. Malvo didn't want extra land for her mall, although it's presumably because she didn't have the millions of dollars to give to Farmer Morgan.
  • Fred and Velma were never at camp, as The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries , the previous series to The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo , had Fred as an aspiring mystery writer and Velma as an assistant research scientist at NASA.
  • Shaggy mentions sending the Chest of Demons to Vincent before school started, but again, he was clearly past the age of going to any high school.
  • The Sheriff said Scooby should be on a leash, but the gang weren't so bothered by that law.
  • The Werewolf mask appears outside and inside the garage, with no time for anyone of the gang to have moved it.
  • It's implied the thirteen episodes of The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo happened over one summer, when it went as far as winter.
  • Velma asks Daphne if the red van is also called the Mystery Machine, which she denies, but won't reveal its real name she has apparently given it. In reality, it was called the Mystery Machine in the episode Coast-to-Ghost .
  • Shaggy says the reason why him and Scooby are always afraid of fake monsters was because they've seen twelve real ones, but this wouldn't account for why they were afraid before that, evidenced by the keepsakes of past cases before The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo .
  • The gang seem to be going back to the original mall case at the beginning of the film, although it isn't elaborated on.
  • Also in the retelling of The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo in the opening credits, Scooby and Shaggy accidentally opened the Chest of Demons by themselves instead of Weerd and Bogel tricking them into opening it.
  • A possible reference to Weerd and Bogel were the minion ghosts in Vincent and Mortimer's past.
  • It's unclear what really happened to the real Asmodeus, whether he could finally rest or just continued to roam the earth, especially since Velma admitted she made up the story of Asamad's redemption.
  • Velma's explanation of Himalayan hallucinations wouldn't explain the ghosts Shaggy, Daphne, and Scooby saw all over the world in the series, unless these hallucinations followed them. She also makes Vincent sound like a nutcase who's been on a lifelong quest of his own imagination.
  • The credits refer to Noshir Dalal as voicing Benny and Flim-Flam, when he was only voicing Flim-Flam. Benny was someone Flim-Flam was working for. The closed captions also refer to Flim-Flam as Benny.
  • Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island is canon to this film (because Scooby-Doo! Return to Zombie Island is a sequel to this movie), yet Velma and Fred say this is their first "real ghost" case.
  • On some TV providers , it says that the movie's original air date is February 5, 2019. Scooby-Doo! and the Curse of the 13th Ghost is a direct-to-video film, not a television film.

Positive messages.

Working as a team is efficient; everyone has his or her place. "If you want a situation to change, you have to take action."

Positive Role Models

The members of Mystery, Incorporated are resilient, resourceful, and determined to succeed. Daphne becomes the team leader in this entry. As always, villains are greedy.

Violence & Scariness

Traditional Scooby! danger and action: hovering ghosts (with fangs and claws); avalanches; team is chased and menaced by mysterious car; heroes plummet, are captured, search through a spooky mansion with peril at every turn. Frightening images of snakes, demons, eyes peering through darkness.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Scooby-Doo! and the Curse of the 13th Ghost is a feature-length Scooby-Doo! adventure that has lots of cartoon scares, spooky images, and slapstick action. The gang faces raging, fanged-and-clawed ghosts who cackle, menace, and attack. They also must contend with a creepy mansion, a series of avalanches, chases, falls, and danger at every turn. Incredible though it may seem, this movie wraps up the story from The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo!, a 13-episode television series first shown in 1985. It works as a stand-alone movie, but will likely be more resonant for those devoted fans who have seen the earlier episodes (still available for purchase or streaming at the time of this movie's release). With frequent frights and the Mystery, Inc. heroes in near constant danger, this movie isn't for the youngest kids. Maybe the real demons were the friends we made along the way.

What's the story.

After making a rather big mistake, the team of Mystery, Incorporated considers retirement in SCOOBY-DOO! AND THE CURSE OF THE 13TH GHOST. First step -- they reluctantly sell the Mystery Van! Then the gang is drawn right back into a new adventure when an old friend summons them. Vincent Van Ghoul (voiced by Maurice LeMarche ), a renowned magician with eerie powers, is desperate for their help. Years earlier, they worked together to catch 12 of the world's most terrifying ghosts and trap them in a Demon Chest. Now, the ghost that got away -- the 13th and scariest of all -- has come back to threaten the world. How can the gang refuse? With Daphne ( Grey Griffin ) taking the lead, Fred ( Frank Welker ) acting as their #1 Cheerleader, along with Shaggy ( Matthew Lillard ), Scooby (Welker), and the always-skeptical Velma ( Kate Micucci ) in tow, they depart for the Himalayan Mountains, a spooky mansion, and a series of mishaps to capture that last remaining ghost.

Is It Any Good?

Daphne, who at one time was the franchise's dim, pretty girl, uses all her smarts and determination to lead the Scooby gang on another traditionally ghostly, direct-to-DVD adventure (their 32nd). In cartoon world, it's never too late for a sequel, and Scooby-Doo! and the Curse of the 13th Ghost arrives more than three decades after the original concept was the basis for a 13-episode TV series to resolve all the burning questions left unanswered in 1985. Viewers can expect lots of twists and turns, mistaken identities, multiple villains, and a dizzying plot (literally dizzying, as the mountain roads are ever-treacherous in the Himalayas). There's plenty of animated scares, even more than the usual amount, but everyone -- even those who might appear to have perished -- is restored by the story's end. Typical Scooby fare. Too many scares for little kids.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about the cartoon violence in Scooby-Doo! and the Curse of the 13th Ghost . How does your family determine which animated movies are appropriate for the kids? Why is it important that they are old enough or mature enough to understand the difference between real and pretend violence when watching a movie like this one?

In this movie, what does Fred mean when he says, "If you want a situation to change, you have to take action." Do you agree with him? Think of some instances when the concept was true for you. What action(s) did you take to change the situation?

The creators of Scooby-Doo! adventures often parody famous people and incidents in their movies. Vincent Van Ghoul is a character based on the celebrated performer Vincent Price . Price actually voiced the role in the 1985 TV series. Find out more about the actor, and why the filmmakers "honored" him with this character.

Scooby-Doo! and the Curse of the 13th Ghost Reviews

scooby doo curse of the 13 ghost

Teen sleuths confront lots of cartoon ghosts and mayhem.

scooby doo curse of the 13 ghost

LaMarche does a fair job with (Vincent) Price's cadence and penchant for making all things into ghoulish puns... a possible fascination with this incarnation of Daphne... a fun return to yesteryear by pretending it was only yesterday.

  • Alternative Character Interpretation : Velma is here pretty much the only one going against the grain by still maintaining her skepticism. Is she the Only Sane Man in this movie or just in blatant denial with cynicism her only defense mechanism?
  • Broken Base : Depending on the viewer opinion on The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo , this is a very fun movie or a insult on the side of the fanbase that were waiting for a more definitive conclusion.
  • After 34 years of being Left Hanging , this movie was meant to finally give a definitive conclusion to The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo only for the movie to pull a very controversial use of Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane which states the original series was nothing but a high-altitude hallucination and the titular 13th Ghost may only have being a cloud of dust . Even if one doesn't take Velma's explanation as granted, the fact that fans waited so long for a conclusion to the series only to get a ambiguous assumption that nothing on the series really happened pissed off more that a few viewers who wonder what was the point of even trying to conclude the storyline if they weren't going to go all the way.
  • Fans were also unimpressed with The Reveal of the reason of Fred's absence in The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo . He went to cheerleading camp , Some fans noted there's no real reason why Fred would go in there nor why he would have any interest into it beyond fitting with his arc in the movie of supporting Daphne as the leader of the Gang and it hasn't being mentioned or brought back since then.
  • Flim Flam somehow developed his own monster hunting shop somewhere between the end of 13 Ghosts and now.
  • Scrappy is nowhere to be found in the film; what would've happened if he actually was in it? The same also applies to Weerd and Bogel, as neither are present in this film either.
  • What would've happened if Velma did open the Chest of Demons?
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap : Flim Flam is probably one of the few characters in the franchise who was an even worse scrappy than the Trope Namer himself. In the movie, he's revealed to no longer be a hustler and has a legitimate business, sold his products to his close friends (without swindling) and his voice actor was pretty well received over all.
  • Shocking Moments : Double notion on two different sides of the fanbase. People who regard The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo as a show either largely forgotten/unknown or known as being So Bad, It's Good would at long last be receiving a Fully Absorbed Finale via the DTV series as a total surprise. On the other when a leak was found a Scooby movie had the title "Curse of the 13th Ghost" there was some mild speculation it could be this only for a few days later much excitement/rejoicing when it turned out to be exactly what they had been expecting.
  • Take That, Scrappy! : Scrappy-Doo for the most part has been left out of the film, but he did get a reference which Velma seems to deny knowing him. It isn't clear whether we are supposed to take this as a direct Take That! , a sign that we are supposed to understand Velma isn't to be taken seriously or just as a meta-joke that he's not here (something 13 Ghosts did a lot of). The later reveal by Word of God that Tim Sheridan did try to work Scrappy into the script may imply it's more likely the second or third rather than the first.
  • Tear Jerker : In a meta sense, Scrappy being missing. The writers wanted to have him in, but Warner Bros. , apparently still wary of how the older fans would react, put the kibosh on it. Thus we have an opening sequence...but with Scrappy's presence completely expunged. To add insult to injury, when Flim-Flam brings him up in the climax, Velma asks curiously, "What's a Scrappy?"
  • Some hardcore fans aren't going to take some of the changes here that well which really should have been expected, not helped with the below mentioned Wasted Character for Scrappy.
  • The explicit supernatural trappings of The 13 Ghosts being given the Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane treatment. Especially since there have been blatant supernatural beings in the franchise before — the first four movies, the live-action films, and Mystery Incorporated , so there's really no need for it; what makes it more egregious is Vincent's crystal is explicitly supernatural (not even Velma can explain that one away) so making the nature of the Chest and its contents ambiguous is pretty much pointless other than making Velma's character annoying.
  • Tim Sheridan confirming that the newer movies are canon with the first four movies ( Zombie Island , The Witch's Ghost , The Alien Invaders , and The Cyber Chase ), in spite of how many retcons this would have to do in order to make it work , especially how it ignores the well-liked concept of the Gang being adults and instead keeps them as teenagers .
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character : Some fans are disappointed that Scrappy-Doo doesn't have any involvement in the film aside from being briefly mentioned by Flim Flam, when the film could've, as was done with Flim Flam, taken the opportunity to have Scrappy Rescued from the Scrappy Heap .
  • Fans hungry for more of an emphasis on Shaggy and Daphne's relationship in the 1980s Scooby-Doo shows, of which 13 Ghosts is one of them, were left short changed here. It isn't really touched on all that much in the movie, and the two only get a few scenes together separate from the rest of the gang.
  • Unexpected Character : While the movie largely came out of left field, the fact that Flim-Flam, a character very much hated by the fanbase (and to the point even the showrunner, Tom Ruegger, hated him ) is in the movie was very surprising.
