Why You Should Take a Ghost or Dark Side Tour
Exploring the haunted side of a new city (or even your own) should be a MUST on everyone's travel bucket list.
These tours are available all year round but are especially fun and maybe an extra bit spooky in the fall.
But if the mere mention of a ghost tour isn't enough to excite you, check out these reasons why you should take a ghost tour with us this fall and a few things you should know before joining.
1. See a different side of a familiar sight .
Ghost Tours are a great way to see some of the city's famous landmarks in a different light.
You may have toured the US Capitol to learn about Congress during day, but let us tell you about the bloodstained steps from a murder in 1890.
2. They really aren't THAT scary.
We are historians, not ghost hunters. We don't have anyone waiting in the bushes to jump out at you.
We aim to share with you the true stories (or as true as the tellers believed them to be) and more often the tours are historic and humorous.
3. It is a fun night out after museums and attractions are closed.
If you are enjoying a trip too much to go back to the hotel, join us - we even have Adults Only versions of some of our true crime tours.
4. You may see a ghost... and won't that be a story for your travel journal?
We make no promises, of course, but it has happened.
In fact, we have a whole collection of photographs from past guests to share with you.
We love coming home after a tour to find a message from a guest who finally went through her photos and ... "OMG, what is THIS?!"
5. You'll learn a lot more than you expected about American history.
We don't make up stories to spook you.
We're sharing with you true stories from the past of curses, murder, affairs, and eerie coincidences.
They say truth is stranger than fiction after all.
Our tours teach you a different side of historic figures and local culture.
What you NEED to know before taking a Ghost Tour!
We have a few tips from our ghost and scandals guides to make sure you have an enjoyable night out.
- Make sure you know what kind of tour you booked. There is a difference between a ghost hunt and a ghost tour (and a true crime tour)
- Come with an open mind. You never what you might see ... or hear... or feel. But mostly, what you might learn.
- Share your experiences with your guide or the group. We lead these tours because we love the eerie and macabre!
- Take a LOT of photos. But don't look at them until daylight.
As the political center of the United States, Washington, DC offers not only a rich history, but also a wealth of paranormal activity that has fascinated both locals and tourists alike.
From strange noises to ghostly apparitions, DC is home to some of the most haunted buildings in the country.
1. The Octagon House
One of the most famous haunted buildings in DC is The Octagon House.
Built in 1800 by Colonel John Tayloe III, it has served as the temporary White House and as the American Institute of Architects headquarters.
The Tayloe family lost their daughter, Anna, due to illness and have reportedly seen her ghostly apparition wandering the halls along with a servant girl who supposedly committed suicide.
Visitors have reported chilly drafts, strange noises and bumps, and an eerie feeling as they explore this historic home.
While we don't enter this building on our White House Ghost tou r, we see its infamous stairs through the windows.
2. The Hay-Adams Hotel
The luxury hotel has hosted famous politicians and celebrities throughout its history.
The hotel is known for its luxurious rooms and prestigious location by the White House.
Yet, guests have reported sightings of Alice Hay, the former owner's mother, and spirits of Civil War soldiers, who died during the conflict.
Unfortunately, ghosts not only stay in this magnificent hotel but sometimes, they might even walk through the walls of the bedrooms.
We see this ghostly hotel on our White House Ghost tour.
3. The National Building Museum
The National Building Museum is home to the famous Inaugural Ball. Its stunning architecture hosts some of the most unique exhibits in the country.
Nevertheless, it might not be perfect in terms of ghosts who are said to wander through the basement floor.
The building was used as a quarantine center for soldiers after the Civil War.
Visitors have claimed seeing shadow figures and hearing an unnerving sound of footsteps.
4. The Old Stone House
The Old Stone House stands as the oldest unchanged building in DC.
Built in 1765, it has remained relatively unchanged and now operates as a museum.
The staff has reported seeing a woman and a child dressed in 18th-century fashion wandering around the house.
Additionally, visitors often feel an unwelcoming energy, a feeling of being watched, and footsteps echoing through the house.
Our Ghosts of Georgetown starts in the side yard with guests reporting a face in the window.
5. The U.S. Capitol
The haunted tales of the US Capitol Building go back decades, with some of the most popular ones involving the House and Senate chambers.
John Quincy Adams, who passed away in the building during a heatstroke in 1848, and the ghost of Kentucky's senator, Henry Clay, who died the same year as Adams, are said to haunt the House and Senate chambers, both trying to complete unfinished business.
Numerous other supernatural occurrences pervade the US Capitol, with some of the most well-known ones being the "phantom footsteps" on the Senate stairs.
Another ghost known to haunt the building is the "Demon Cat," a feline ghost known to appear before significant events and national tragedies.
Legend has it that it attacked people who crossed its path, and its appearance was an ominous sign of disaster.
The Crypt is also a popular spot for apparitions, with several eyewitnesses reporting sightings of ghosts wearing 19th-century formal attire.
Visitors report eerie noises, footsteps, and whisperings while navigating the tunnels.
More on these stories are included in our Capitol Hill Ghosts and Scandals tours.
6. Halcyon House
A "legit haunted house" if you ask Canden, this is a stop on our Ghosts of Georgetown tour.
This historic home has an electrifying story and the street lamps often flicker as we walk by.

Deep inside the beltway lurks a different side to the legends you know. This great city is built on the passions of famous Americans. And wherever passion builds, blood is spilled, lives are lost but spirits cling on.
Bold ambition makes for animated ghosts and this tour is full of the characters from our history that live on in our memories and the haunted buildings of this tour.
Presidents, Assassins, and Poltergeists
When you think of Washington, D.C., you might picture the regal monuments that enshrine political giants from history, or the places our laws and customs are battled over or the countless showcases of culture that crowd the National Mall. Many people fail to see the foreboding darkness that lurks at the edges of the city’s tourist-friendly historical sheen.
When reputation is everything, a rumor can kill. Take the tragedy of Stephen Decatur, the victim of a duel started just yards from the White House. The White House itself, the seat of the most powerful job in the world has a supernatural power that is off the charts. Assassinated Presidents and ghostly children still roam the halls, scaring staff and comforting today’s worried politicians.
Kindly ghosts and ghouls
See if you can spot the former First Lady and refined hostess who educated a nation on what elegant entertaining looked like . She still waves invitingly from the porch of her house on Lafayette Square Park.
Many people come to Washington, D.C., with hopes and dreams, even if it is to end the republic by kidnapping and murdering the three most important people in America. But not every wide-eyed idealist finds all that they crave, and those dashed dreams and tragic misfires create fascinating stories that will thrill and astound you.
Your trip through the scandalous past of Washington D.C.’s political elite, as well as a few lesser-known tragedies, will help you understand that even in the District of Columbia, the darkness of human nature will creep into the corners of the most civic-minded human endeavors. When the hairs stand up on the back of your neck, and you feel that familiar flutter in the pit of your stomach, you will know the true terror of the Executive City.
What draws the supernatural to Washington, D.C.?
The assassination of Abraham Lincoln and the death of all involved in the fateful plot have left ghosts at several locations around Washington. The mother who screams her innocence from inside her old lodging house. Will you see Wilkes Booth skulking outside the theatre where his kidnapping attempt went so wrong.
Wherever you stay during your time in Washington D.C., be sure to drop into the Hay-Adams Hotel, take a sly drink at the ‘Off the Record’ bar in the basement and see who is whispering what to whom. Keep an ear out for the ghost of Clover Adams, who met her tragic end on the premises. Do you smell the almonds?
From culture to bureaucracy, few landmarks leave a spotless record behind them. For example, The Smithsonian’s absent benefactor still wanders the grounds. Will you see the absent-minded scientists and his cat through a window, desperate to find someone to talk to about the latest paleontological discoveries?
Reel in horror at the terrible tale of the first person to be executed by the federal government. Her ghost protests her innocence across several sites of the tour. Will you hear her banging on the door the old supreme court begging for her life?
Experiencing the horrifying truth of this gleaming city in person and at night will make you feel like you are a part of the city’s strange and ghastly history. Reserve your tour today, and experience the side of Washington, D.C., that rarely makes the news.

7 reasons you should book the dc ghosts tour now:.
An Authentic Ghost Tour Based on Facts from our nation’s capital.
The well researched historical accounts of events surrounding these horrible hauntings have been extensively researched and are updated as new scholarship come to light. Even if you take the ghost stories with a pinch of salt, you will have a new way of seeing the torrid and tumultuous history of our nation’s capital.
For instance, you’ll note the Madison’s feature in several of our stories, such an impactful and energetic they really left their mark on Washington society, then and now. Dolly Madison was renowned for hosting elegant and cordial soirees with members of both political parties in attendance, she was convinced that just because people disagreed on how the country should be run it was no reason to not be able to engage in civil discourse with on another.
She pioneered the spirit of bipartisan cooperation, long before the term was in use.
That her ghost continues to wander the streets of Washington today is a timely reminder that such an attitude would be welcome today. Perhaps if any tour members see her ghost they can encourage her to haunt the capitol!
Entertainment with a historical twist
The knowledgeable and entertaining guides on DC ghosts will hold your attention in the palm of their hands as they tell you about the latter half of Dolly Madison’s life. Her financial ruin after her husband’s death. The worry caused by the need to manage two properties. Her name being added to a brand of ice-cream, among many other products and trinkets, all bearing her name. All opportunities et up by a circle of caring friends.
Imagine the sorrow and loss of pride as friends passed by with even more thin and transparent reasons to give her cash. A former slave even visited regularly, pretending to still be buying his freedom, even though he had paid for it many years ago.
Dolly Madison’s ghost was often seen just after her death, on the porch that Dolly Madison used to greet passersby from. The subsequent owner of the house tried to discourage the ghost by blocking in the porch with a window. But still, her ghost would appear. Waving at people passing by.
As you stand outside the Cutts-Madison house and stare at where the porch used to be, maybe you will see her ghost. Feel your heart race as you learn more about the ghosts at each tour stop, perhaps even seeing movement in the dark as you walk along the guided route.
Entertainment for All Ages
The stories of historical hauntings will grip you with fear, we don’t want you or any young people to lose sleep. So while entertaining and full of historical fact our ghost stories will haunt your memories, but not your dreams.
Ghost enthusiasts of all ages are welcome, and our tours are fully accessible. All tour guides are professionals and locals with insight into the city.
If you focus on the hauntings you will not be dissatisfied with the stories from first-hand accounts, written historical documents, and careful research. For example, the White House has been written about since the day it was built. It has hosted events of national importance and every single president (except George Washington) has expended energy in varying amounts within those walls. The later presidents all reported feeling or seeing ghosts, but some felt comforted by the watchful spirits of their predecessors.
Learn New Stories about the Capital City.
The DC Ghosts tour is packed with in-depth and fascinating information about the capital city of the United States, and that’s without the ghosts! You’ll have new facts about the famous stories of Washington D.C. to tell as well as some surprising lesser-known stories that you will learn during the tour.
For example, the National Theatre at 1321 on Pennsylvania Avenue has a fascinating ghost story hidden in its basement under the stage. Join us to hear about the actor whose career was cut short but just can’t leave the stage. His ghost continues to haunt new productions, especially around opening night. It’s as if his ghost feels the excitement and energy a new production brings to the theatre, which wakes his spirit to return to the place he loved.
Even if you are a Non-Believer – fun is guaranteed.
DC Ghosts promises you a fun tour, even if your imagination does not extend to the possibility of the powerful energies of the spirit living on after the death of the body.
We understand that different people have different opinions on ghosts and their role in this world. The DC Ghosts ghost tour is open to everyone, and even if you don’t find the stories convincing, we know you will still have a great time and learn a lot about Washington D.C.
But if you have just a small glimmer of belief or a strange experience from your childhood that you still can’t quite explain, then we will provide you ample evidence of the supernatural ghosts who haunt Washington D.C today.
In Town and Not Sure of What to Do.
You could visit a small part of one of the great museums in DC, or take a tour of one of the houses on our Ghost Tour, but you won’t find such depth and variety in the historical aspects or the locations selected or the chances of seeing a ghost yourself anywhere but the DC Ghosts haunted tour of Washington D.C.
Selecting and researching the stunning historical and haunted locations on just the standard DC Ghosts tour would take you weeks of research, it took that long just to develop the very first tour, let alone all the iterations and extra research since then.
On D.C. Ghosts you will have a fascinating insight into the history of this city, and save you time and energy, all with the guarantee of an entertaining evening walking the atmospheric streets of Washington D.C. enthralled by our stories of haunted history and the terrifying truth that lurks behind the elegant facades of our capital city.
A Memorable Experience.
They say a story is more memorable than a fact, and we have eight or twelve fascinating stories carefully plucked from the history books and designed to be memorable and repeatable to your friends and family.
Add to these expert stories of haunting and historical ghosts the darkness on the streets of Washington D.C. in the very places where these unbelievable incidents took place. We will stop outside the president’s church and might hear the bell that, when rung on the occasion of a notable person’s death, summons six ghostly figures in white cloaks to a special pew in the church.
