Fountaine Pajot Mahé 36

catamaran mahe 36

Fountiane Pajot Mahe’ 36

Even though it’s the smallest offering in Fountaine Pajot’s line of performance cruising catamarans, there’s a lot going on in the aptly named Mahé 36 Evolution, which replaces the company’s previous 36-footer while introducing a series of evolutionary changes. Fittingly, the most obvious and important ones are above deck and relate to comfort, speed, safety, and sail handling.

Last year, the entire Fountaine Pajot fleet, including the Mahé, upgraded their collective sail plans with the introduction of the square-topped mainsails prevalent aboard big racing multihulls and America’s Cup boats. It increases sail area where it provides the greatest benefit—aloft. In the case of the 36, the mainsail is stashed in a handy dedicated “stowaway” sail bag on the boom when doused or reefed.

But the biggest change to the Mahé 36 is the all-encompassing hard dodger that completely shades the cockpit and addresses several issues at once. Incorporated into the design of the dodger is an innovative molded helmsman’s seat (with room for two) that provides the skipper with a clear view of the sails and surroundings and ready access to all sail controls. In addition to sheets and reefing lines, this includes the optional electric halyard winch and the revamped and at-hand traveler controls and clutches; the key component to mainsail trim on a cat, the wide traveler track is mounted well aft on the trailing edge of the dodger but cleverly led forward to within arm’s length of the driver.

The dual-purpose hardtop thus provides plenty of protection from the elements while at the same time offering a handy, comfortable seat—a neat trick carried out by a skilled design team.

While the hard dodger is certainly the most obvious new feature, there are lots of subtle additions as well. Topside, these include a couple of big hatches and also some lockers forward of the coachroof with enough room for an optional 4.5-kilowatt Panda generator. Down below in the galley, the fridge and oven have been repositioned, opening up a ton of storage space, and a useful island seat has been installed aft of the dining table in the central saloon. All in all, that’s a lot of evolved thinking.

“Go down to Miami and sail this 36-foot cat,” the boss said, pointing to a brochure. I liked the Miami part, but too many cruising cats only live up to the comfort side of the catamaran’s promise of speed and comfort to make me enthusiastic about the sailing. By the time I was finished with Fountaine Pajot’s Mahé 36, I liked the cat part of the assignment, too.

The famous raceboat-design team of Joubert/Nivelt designed the part of the Mahé 36 that goes through the water while O. Flahault Design was responsible for the “look” and the interior design. This combination of talents has led to a very slick little cruiser. The hulls’ waterline beam is narrow-a key factor in getting a cat through the water quickly-but above the water, the hulls flare out for increased living space and buoyancy.

Each hull is equipped with watertight bulkheads fore and aft, and construction is resin-infused fiberglass over a foam core, which makes for a strong, unsinkable structure. The 20-horsepower Volvo diesels with saildrives are located aft of the keels and rudders in their own compartments-keeping noise and fumes out of the living area. They drive the boat along at an easy 6 knots without having to goose the throttle.

There are steps in the back of each hull, with a swim ladder off the starboard one. A stainless-steel life-raft bracket is mounted off the back of the bridgedeck to port. The cockpit is large, with a table and L-shaped seats for four to port and a step up to a two-person helm seat to starboard. Directly in front of the helmsman is a pair of winches for trimming the sails.

The house is fairly high to give headroom within, and there are no attempts to streamline it; the forward windows are almost vertical for interior space and to minimize solar overheating. On deck by the mast, lockers house the anchor windlass and halyard tails. The halyards drop tidily through an aperture in the hatch and are ready when it’s time to drop the sails. A big, comfortable trampoline covers the area between the hulls all the way forward to the crossbeam.

A pair of large sliding doors opens the saloon and galley to the cockpit. Inside, surrounded by light-colored, satin-finished wood, a table for six has a great all-around view and converts to a double for extra guests. Aft to port is a (fiddleless) nav table. When I unscrewed the electric panel there, I found the wiring behind to be messy, but I assume that was because the boat was somewhat rushed to make the show on time. In each hull, there’s a cabin with a queen-sized berth aft and a head and shower with modern design elements (e.g., the sink is shaped like a bowl and sits atop the counter) forward. The alternative layout has three cabins, with an extra berth in place of the head in the port hull.

Off Key Biscayne, with 12 to 15 knots of wind, I got sold on this boat. Once the roachy main was hoisted on the 55-foot aluminum mast and the fractional overlapping jib was unfurled, the boat took off. I’d expected unexceptional performance, but the Mahé went to weather well and topped 9 knots on a close reach-this was on a 36-footer, remember. It handled the chop in the Gulf Stream like a much bigger boat, too. I found myself enjoying the sail in spite of my prejudices, and I was reluctant to head back into the marina at the end of the day. With the Mahé 36, Fountaine-Pajot and its designers have created a fun, comfortable, entry-level cruising cat that’s certain to lure more than a few monohull sailors into the grasp of its claws.

The Mahe 36 is built for safe navigation with comfortable, bright living areas and a fully protected cockpit alongside the salon.

Unlike the competition, she is all infusion-composite built, resulting in one of the strongest and stiffest structures available in a catamaran today. Innovative features such as same level cockpit and saloon, huge double sliding entrance doors, a new-bright, high-gloss sycamore interior make her an ideal liveaboard cruiser. High bridgedecks, top quality fittings and drag reducing hulls make this a true blue water boat. The all composite construction, ergonomic, yet smartly styled interior and overhanging coachroof are all trademarks of the beautiful range of Fountaine Pajot catamarans, which can be found in every corner of the globe.

Since 2011, the exciting new Mahé 36 Evolution features a host of improvements and new features to its predecessor, including a rigid cockpit bimini, redesigned galley, additional refrigeration, improved ventilation and numerous interior upgrades; changes contribute to making the Mahé 36 Evolution the best value 11-metre catamaran on the market, making catamaran sailing accessible to new clients on a reasonable budget, while still offering the superior performance and construction qualities commonly found in larger and more prestigious catamarans.

The Mahé 36 Evolution was designed to meet three stringent objectives: to be affordable while offering excellent value for money, be ergonomic and comfortable, and lastly to possess outstanding sea performance with centralised handling. Also featuring a sheltered open-plan cockpit, a clean and uncluttered deck layout, plus a raised helm station boasting 360-degree vision with centralised commands, the Mahé 36 Evolution’s innovative exterior design complements its outstanding performance.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Mahe 36 – Boat Review by sailmagazine.com

By Bill Springer Fountain Pajot returns to building smaller cruising catamarans. Fountaine Pajot’s new Mahé 36 replaces the popular Athena 38 as the company’s entry-level boat. Since many cat builders have shied away from smaller cruising models, I was eager to see how the Mahé could provide interior headroom and volume without looking top-heavy or sacrificing bridgedeck clearance. I was also interested in learning how or if the shorter waterline would affect performance under sail. Here’s what I found… To read complete story – click here for Mahe 36 – Boat Review on Sail Magazine website

Multihull of the year

With the Mahe 36, Fountaine-Pajot has succeeded in offering a compact catamaran which is however treated as a much bigger model! A model which is particularly present on the second-hand market.

In its original version, the Mahe 36 didn’t offer a rigid bimini…

From 2011, the Evolution version of the Mahé 36 offers a rigid bimini which provides good protection and doesn’t affect performance.

Not too heavy, well-canvassed and with a reduced wetted surface area, the Mahé 36 is quite fast under sail.

Aboard, the areas remain very pleasant to live in as a family! The builder intelligently limited itself to two or three double cabins – a coherent choice, to limit the load embarked.

A clear, functional deck plan: movement is easy and the relaxation area forward of the coachroof is generous.

Launched in 2006, the Mahe 36 remained Fountaine-Pajot’s smallest model until 2013, with 195 boats built. A nice success for this catamaran, built in just one piece thanks to injection techniques - no less than 80m² came out of the mold! In 2011, the 36 benefitted from a revamp, thus becoming the 36 Evolution. The builder was then offering a rigid bimini, a redesigned maneuvering station – with an electric winch on request – and slightly modified accommodation with better finishing.

This model’s main interesting feature is its size…although in the 90s and early 2000s multihulls of 35 to 40 feet flourished – the Antigua 37 then Tobago35 for Fountaine Pajot, Aventura 36, Edel 38, Broadblue 385, Lagoon 380 – the following decade clearly focused on models of 40 feet and over. The builders can’t be reproached for this: it’s true that 40 feet is considered to be the minimum size for long distance cruising with all the comfort desired, and…in complete safety, of course. Given that most catamarans of this size bought second-hand are intended for long-term cruising, we can legitimately ask the question: is the Mahe 36 suitable for an ocean crossing? The answer is yes, if we judge by the...

Budget Friendly Charm

Fp mahe 36 catamaran for charter : san diego.

One is immediately impressed with the Fountaine Pajot Mahe 36’s proportions. The cabintop is not too high or big, and bridgedeck clearance is not too low. The hulls are tall enough to provide excellent interior volume without looking overblown. The two-person helm seat provides good visibility over the coachroof, and several comfortable seats in the cockpit provide excellent views forward through the saloon’s large companionway doors and wrap-around windows.

catamaran mahe 36

FP Mahe 36 Exterior:

From Sail Magazine, 2008 (edited): Storage on deck is good. A single locker in the cockpit can accommodate lines and fenders, and a larger foredeck locker will swallow extra deck gear. The traveler, which runs the full width of the stern on the aft crossbeam, provides good main sheet control, and both jib sheets can be trimmed from the helm station. The feedback from the helm was workable, and the boat does not require lots of subtle helm adjustments to keep the telltales flying straight back. The helm station is comfortable, and the ability to trim both jib sheets from the helm station is a plus. Under sail, this is a good little performer that doesn’t feel little when you’re under way.

catamaran mahe 36

FP Mahe 36 Interior:

From Sail Magazine, 2008 (edited): The owner’s cabin to starboard has a large queen bunk aft and plenty of stowage space in cabinets, drawers, and a hanging locker, plus access to another large storage locker farther forward in the hull. An opening hatch and opening ports provide plenty of ventilation. The entire starboard bow is dedicated to a head that’s bigger than heads I’ve seen on some 60-foot monohulls. The entire accommodation area is accented with stylish light varnished-wood furniture and a parquet cabin sole. The saloon has all the light, space, and seating you’d expect to find on an offshore cruising cat, though it’s a little narrower (fore and aft) than a bigger cat’s saloon would be. The galley and the nav station in the saloon are more than adequate. The chart table has a seat, and the galley has decent counter space plus a handy window for passing drinks up to the helm.

and strong . I see in the information that the is designed as an "offshore cruiser". I want to make sure it's not actually designed as a coastal cruiser and only as an cruiser. Are the attachment points strong enough? How about the attachment points. I guess preparing a to withstand a roll is at least an option. Perhaps you don't even bother with that on a cat and only prepare to withstand the strongest sail forces. out of. I intuitively disagree and anyway, my prefers the 3-cabin layout, so I'm leaning toward disregarding this , but would love your input and opinion. . Where is the and where is the ? I am torn between a) one tank and one small (DC) b) two water and no and c) two water and the small (DC) water maker. I'm really not that interested in the weight and complexity of a large water maker. Any thoughts there? I love the idea of being able to rinse off after a swim (and other somewhat liberal uses of fresh water) without having to worry too much. . I'm interested in which years the model was redesigned and what changes were made. For instance, when did they fix the kitchen unit issue. I have gotten a general idea, but I wonder if anyone knows of a definitive source. (left of the mirror) that doesn't appear to be used for anything? Are there options that in there or is that for the owner to customize? Surely it's not designed to waste that much space. or a sandy flat or something, would that be feasible and advisable. It looks as though she'll sit fine on a paved lot on land, but I'm talking about other bottoms. sole. I would want to replace that with an easy release system so that floor space could be utilized for other things when desired. Anyone else agree or has anyone else done this?

Boat: Fountaine-Pajot Mahe 36
2008 Mahe (hull 91) in Tortola, and sailed her (via Bermuda) to NH in May 2013 - a trip of about 1700 miles total. Boatspeed average/peak was 9/15 kts, though the peak was because of surfing. Winds/seas averaged about 15-20 kts/8-10 ft. We did experience a peak gust/seas of 54 kts/20 ft. Thus, we have complete confidence in her capabilities/safety as a passagemaker. With 140 gallons fresh water tankage I'd forget the unless you intend to do nonstop globetrotting or opera. We did carry an additional 20 gallons of on each leg. The twin 20hp Volvos never failed us when needed. Cotemar IS the SME on the Mahe - he deserves a raise for his efforts.

. Nice boat. Bare boated out of CYOA in ST Thomas on an earlier 2007 Mahe and our only complaints were boat was squeaky and the was . All those issues I think have been addressed in the later models. I think If I were in the market again the Mahe Evolution Duo would still be pretty high on my list especially if I was only expecting only an occasional guest or two. Don't want to take off the panel off the starboard side berth to get to the tank if it's not absolutely necessary. Especially considering it might need to be replaced in the future. I was wondering if anyone made a panel that would simplify ?
Also, which brand and size did you if you've done this?

Testimonial

Just finished our time on Treasure. I have chartered at Whitsundays twice before and can only recommend your crew in the highest. I have done so in fact since I returned and hopefully some bookings will come your way. Treasure was a delight beautifully maintained. Every morning we sat and listened to the scheds and while we had a sound and true boat we heard again and again charterers having precious time taken out of their holiday with problems with their boat. Thanks so much for a great holiday and a delightful boat. I am looking into purchasing and charter so please keep me in mind and email me if anything comes up Daryl and Audrey.

Fountiane Pajot Mahe' 36 Courtesy of Fountaine Pajot. The Mahe 36 is small enough for a couple to safely and easily handle her under sail and is easy to dock. With less than four feet of draft, one can anchor in the shallower waters closer to shore.
