At least half the qualifying sea time should be gained in tidal waters and on vessels less than 24m LOA, and all seatime must be on vessels of the same discipline as the exam to be taken, i.e. sail or power.
Contact if your sea time is on a yacht greater than 24m and 500gt.
For example, an RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Sail wishing to be examined for RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Power
You may use your own boat or a boat that you have chartered or borrowed. You will be responsible for ensuring the boat is seaworthy and suitable for the area in which the exam takes place and equipped as shown below.
The boat used must be between 7m and 18m (LOA) and be in sound, seaworthy condition, equipped to the standard set out in the RYA Boat Safety Handbook 2nd Edition (code G103). The boat must be equipped with a full up to date set of charts and navigational publications along with working instruments and either plotter or GPS. In addition to the candidate there should be two crew on board as the examiner will not take part in the management of the boat during the exam.
There may be vessels that will meet the guidelines outlined above but by virtue of their layout, construction, handling characteristics or other factors may be unsuitable for use for an RYA Yachtmaster Practical examination. The RYA reserves the right to refuse an exam on a vessel that, in the view of the RYA Chief Examiner, will not allow the examiner to conduct an examination to the standard required by the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Qualification Panel.
Before you book your exam please check that you:

(john percival marine associates), alternative yachtmaster pathway for oow yacht candidates.
Candidates for the OOW (Yachts <3000gt) CoC are required to hold an RYA Yachtmaster Offshore CoC (or IYT Master of Yachts <200gt).
To obtain a YM Offshore CoC, candidates must have undertaken half of their qualifying mileage (1250 miles) on vessels <24 metres. The RYA have identified that this is difficult for some crew, stating:
“Over recent years there has been a growing trend for crew to start their working lives at sea on 60 to 70 metre vessels (or even larger). As a result we have seen more and more crew presenting themselves for the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore exam without sufficient meaningful command experience or mileage to ensure they are ready to pass it. Often this results in an exam fail, not only costing the candidate time and money, but also causing a great deal of angst.
To cater for the changing entry point to the superyacht industry we have worked with the MCA and the Yacht Qualification Panel to create an alternative pathway for crew wishing to progress to MCA Deck Officer qualifications.
Candidates will be able to take an RYA Yachtmaster/Coastal Skipper shorebased course, an RYA Coastal Skipper practical course and a Yachtmaster prep week. Those, combined with their superyacht and tender operations experience will provide the necessary pre-requisite experience to sit the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal exam.
The MCA will then accept this towards non-command OOW qualifications.
The existing pathway to the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore exam will remain for those holding the pre-requisite sea time and experience on appropriate vessels, and is indeed still seen as the preferred route. However, this alternative pathway will allow progression for those who do not have adequate command experience in smaller vessels.”
This is laid out in detail in MIN 580 . More information on the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal CoC is available on this page of the RYA website .
This is good news for those candidates who find themselves struggling to find the mileage for YM Offshore, and now makes the OOW <3000gt an achievable goal. However, for those candidates wishing to move forwards to achieve the Master (Code Vessels <200gt) CoC, they must obtain the YM Offshore, not the YM Coastal.
Candidates moving from OOW to the Chief Mate (Yachts <3000) CoC are required to hold the RYA Yachtmaster Ocean CoC (or IYT Master of Yachts). This is only achievable if you hold the YM Offshore CoC. However, the RYA have designed a ‘Certificate of Completion’ for those candidates who undertake the YM Coastal, and wish to move on to Chief Mate. Candidates would complete the usual YM Ocean shore based course, qualifying passage and oral exam, but would not be issued the full Ocean CoC if they did not hold YM Offshore. IYT have also designed a similar solution.
GMDSS Radio Operator Certificate (GMDSS ROC)
Find out About GMDSS Short Range Courses
Find a GMDSS Short Range Radio (VHF) Course
The GMDSS Restricted Operator Certificate is a prerequisite for Officers and Masters on vessels over 24m operating in Sea Area A1 (i.e. within about 50 miles of a coast station). It is also a prerequisite for the MCA Master 200 (Code Vessel) within a limited area. A GMDSS GoC is required for seafarers of the same capacity operating in an unlimited area (outside of Sea Area 1 / > 50 miles from a coast radio station).
*For yacht crew only in need of a VHF SRC certificate to fulfill the needs of a commercial powerboat or Yachtmaster license, a 1 day VHF license may meet the requirements based on the candidates capacity and area of operation (Opposed to the GMDSS ROC). Please contact your course administrator or employer in order to best understand the requirements *
- Radio equipment used in the GMDSS - Distress signals and alerting procedures - Use of Digital Selective Calling (DSC) - Survival craft communications - Procedures for the use of EPIRBs and SARTs - Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) regulations - Operational procedures - Maintenance of GMDSS equipment on board ship - Log keeping requirements.
This course is followed by an exam that is usually run by a different RYA assessor and has to be registered for separately to the course in most cases. The exam usually has a separate exam fee.
To obtain a GMDSS Short Range certificate, an operator must successfully complete a written examination and a practical examination administered by an accredited maritime training institution. The examinations test the operator's knowledge of radio equipment, procedures, distress signals, and other emergency information.
The GMDSS RoC is valid for five years and must be renewed every five years. The holder of a GMDSS Short Range certificate must maintain a current proficiency in radio operations and equipment maintenance. Candidates must complete a refresher examination in order to maintain license validity after the 5-year period.

Because IYT Worldwide is the internationally accredited global leader and most trusted standard in yacht training and certification, there exist a small number of schools and instructors who claim to be certified by IYT when, in fact, they are not. As a globally recognised brand, we work to maintain a high standard of excellence and encourage our network to help identify and deter fraudulent schools and instructors.
Any school included on our website meets the standards and certification requirements of IYT Worldwide. All IYT instructors are provided with IYT branded certificates upon completion of their training, which you can ask to see. If you are ever concerned that your school or instructor may be unauthorised, please contact us to confirm their status. If in doubt about the authenticity of any nautical certification, please do not hesitate to contact IYT headquarters at [email protected]
International Yacht Training Worldwide is a Federally registered Canadian Company (Nov 2007) and was originally founded by Capt. Mark Fry in the United States in December 2002. The company has been trading as IYT since its inception.
It has been brought to our attention that a company called “International Yacht Training Academy” is also registered in Canada and trading as IYTA. This company is registered to a Mr. Jim (Cumhur) Gokova from Turkey and is not affiliated or associated with IYT Worldwide in any way. We believe Mr. Gokova is deliberately attempting to infringe on the good name and reputation of “International Yacht Training Worldwide” by issuing certificates in the name of his company “IYTA”. This is possibly because his previous company “International Sailing School” had its IYT Partner School status permanently withdrawn and Mr. Gokova also had his IYT instructor and examiner qualifications permanently withdrawn on September 12th 2011. Mr. Gokova was engaged in activities that were in serious breach of the legal terms of a contract between IYT Worldwide and Mr. Gokova.
Mr. Gokova is currently issuing boating qualifications( May 2015) in the name of “IYTA” and many students have contacted IYT head office here in Canada asking if they are genuine IYT Worldwide certificates which obviously they are not. This is causing unnecessary hardship and financial loss for students who spent their money assuming that they are getting a genuine IYT certificate from IYT Worldwide.
Please be advised that Mr. Jim (Cumhur) Gokova and his company International Yacht Training Academy (IYTA) have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with International Yacht Training Worldwide. Should you require any additional information concerning Mr. Jim Gokova or his company please do not hesitate to contact me on [email protected] or +1 778 477 5668.
