Hatteras began operations at High Point, NC, in 1959 with the Hargrave-designed Hatteras 41 Convertible, the first all-fiberglass sportfishing boat her size in the industry. In 1961 Hatteras premiered the 41 Double Cabin, the first fiberglass motor yacht. By the late 1960s, Hatteras was offering a full line of models including the largest production fiberglass motor yacht then available, the Hatteras 50 MY. The 1970s and 1980s saw Hatteras evolve into the undisputed leader of production convertibles and motor yachts in the industry. In 1986 Genmar purchases Hatteras from parent company AMF, Inc. In 1992 the Hatteras 82 Convertible became the largest production sportfisherman ever built. In 2001 industry-giant Brunswick purchased Hatteras Yachts from the Genmar Corporation. With production at a record low, parent-company Brunswick announced early in 2013 its decision to seek a buyer for Hatteras Yachts.

She offers twin Detroit Diesel 112 HP naturally aspirated main engines, a new Northern Lights 16 kW generator, Xantrex Freedom 3,000 watt inverter, Gyro-Gale stabilizers, watermaker, Furuno electronics, AIS, custom tender deck wrap-around seating, raised pilothouse design and a two stateroom 2 head layout. Black Powder is bluewater cruising and Great Loop capable.

48' hatteras vessel walkthrough.

From the swimplatform, you enter the hardtop covered aftdeck through the transom gate. You then enter the salon through a teak & glass door. Once inside the salon, you will find 2 chairs, storage/entertainment cabinetry and 2 stools and a countertop port aft, sofa and end cabinet to starboard, galley port forward and storage cabinetry starboard forward. Step up into the raised pilothouse and you will find a berth and wrap-around settee aft, side deck access doors on each side, full helm forward and steps to the staterooms starboard forward. Engine room access is via the lazarrette or a salon sole hatch.

The headroom in the salon is 6'5", 6'2" in the master stateroom, 6'4" in the master stateroom shower, 6'6" in the guest stateroom, 6'3" in the guest shower, 6'7" in the pilothouse, 6'8" on the flybridge, 7'5" on the aftdeck. The master stateroom berth is 6'3" long and the guest berths are 6'9" long. The pilothouse berth is 6'7" long.

The height from the waterline to the top of the bimini is 18'6" and 15'6" to the top of the flybridge windscreen, which is the lowest attainable height.

Black Powder offers a full-beam master stateroom amidships with a queen size berth and ensuite head with tub/shower and a guest stateroom forward with a v-berth. The guest head with enclosed shower is starboard aft of the stateroom. There is also a single berth above and aft of the pilothouse settee and the salon sofa converts into a queen size berth..

The salon offers a queen size sleeper sofa and end cabinet to starboard, 2 seats, storage/entertainment cabinetry and 2 stools and a countertop to port, storage cabinetry starboard forward, bookshelf, teak & holly sole, opening side and aft windows with screens and shades, teak & glass door to the aftdeck and reading lights.

The Hatteras legend began on the barrier islands of the North Carolina shore where the frigid waters of the Labrador Current encounter the tropical Gulf Stream. The outcome is Diamond Shoals – home to some of the most turbulent and untamed waters in the Atlantic and some of the best sportfishing in the world.

Here in 1959 at Cape Hatteras, where nor’easters can blow almost as fiercely as hurricanes, Willis Slane envisioned building a boat that could conquer the waters of Diamond Shoals and surmount the Hatteras weather. It would not be an ordinary boat – no traditional wooden fishing boat could do this. This new boat would have to be rugged and robust to take the pounding of Hatteras waters. But most importantly, it would have to be a great sportfishing boat – big enough to handle a group of avid fishermen and comfortable enough for family back at the dock.

Breaking with all tradition, Slane chose a new material – fiberglass – to build this noteworthy yacht that launched an industry. Hatteras produced its first sportfishing yacht on March 22, 1960, in the town of High Point, North Carolina. Christened the Knit Wits, she was a 41-foot twin cabin sportfisherman with a 14-foot beam and a pair of 275-hp Lincoln V-8s. The response was enthusiastic and the Hatteras legend was born. This commitment to superior craftsmanship began with the Knit Wits and continues today.
