PICYA handbook is online here . And the PICYA bylaws can be found here .
*Reciprocity Between Clubs Questions often arise about issues of reciprocity between yacht clubs and the role of PICYA with respect to this matter.
There are 108 yacht clubs and boating organizations in PICYA, each unique in size, structure, membership interests, and facilities. Therefore, it must be the responsibility of each club to develop its own program of activities and its own policies and procedures about reciprocity with other clubs.
There is nothing automatic about reciprocal privileges despite the fact that uninformed individuals and organizations pass this word along. While we believe that all our member clubs have a spirit of sportsmanship and friendliness toward other boaters, we support every club’s right and responsibility to establish its own policies with respect to visiting privileges. Reciprocity is a privilege, not a right.
Visiting Protocol and Courtesies of Clubs
Under no circumstances should a member assume that all yacht clubs are reciprocal and before requesting entrance, you should check with our General Manager and the club you intend to visit.
If visiting a yacht club in another state, first call the club and ask what is needed for you to visit.
Usually, a letter of introduction from your Commodore on yacht club stationery will help to allow you access to their club for a one time visit.
Guidelines for Members visiting other clubs 1. Verify that you have reciprocal privileges – contact the GM. 2. Call ahead to ensure that space is available, your visit will not conflict with other club functions, and to make arrangements early in the year for a club cruise. 3. When making arrangements ask about club and marina rules such as allowing pets, parties, electrical service, etc. 4. Always sign the guest register. 5. Always have a current membership card from your clubs and be prepared to show it. 6. Wear a nametag from your club or sign a ‘stick-on badge’ from the club. 7. Ask for a copy or location of club rules and observe them, you are a guest. 8. Patronize the facilities of the club. They may have brought in extra staff just for your visit. 9. Under no circumstances board or make fast to any vessel without permission. Do not use any equipment left on the dock. 10. Always follow good environmental practices consistent with concerns for proper waste disposal and discharges from your vessel. Leave a clean wake.
Most clubs want you to enjoy your visit to their facility.
Traditional yachting protocol, courtesy, and a thank you goes a long way in fostering good relations between clubs.

The burgees are on display above the bar in our clubhouse.
It is traditional for yacht clubs to exchange burgees during the first visit by one yacht club to the other. It is the desire that our club continue this tradition. If you are planning to visit a yacht club with whom we have not yet exchanged burgees, be sure to take a SGYC burgee with you to exchange.
As we exchange with a club, we will post the photo of their burgee on these pages. Please review this list to be sure you are not exchanging with a club we have already visited. This list is in alphabetical order for easy review.
If you require a burgee to present, you can obtain one by contacting the Commodore or Shipstore. Please allow yourself plenty of time to schedule the pickup of your burgee.
When you visit a club, bring one of our burgees with you. Tell the person who greets you that you are interested in exchanging burgees with their club. They may perform the exchange at that time or they may put you in touch with one of their officers. If you are visiting the club during an event, they may even make the exchange as part of the presentations at the event. If you are calling ahead to advise them you are going to visit their club, it would be appropriate to mention at that time that your are interested in exchanging burgees.

With a free standing mast, where can I fly a burgee or any other small flags?
Good question. Where indeed? lol
Why is "free standing" a qualifier? Don't free standing masts have halyards?

capta said: Not hardly. There is a very distinct set of rules for flying flags and pennants aboard a yacht. To do other than that invites others to think you quite ignorant of yachting etiquette. Failure to fly a courtesy flag from the right place can lead to bothersome consequences should some official take offense. Click to expand
The Hunter Vision does not have spreaders or halyards as shown in the attached photo. Suggest attaching a burgee and other small flags to the lifelines. That is what we do on yacht club cruise outs when we do not want to raise it on a line that is attached to the lower spreader. I suppose you could run a line from the top of the mast to the stern rail to attach burgee and other small flags.
Flying your colors is a time honored tradition among sailors. Power boats do not have masts for sails, but they raise their flags. Flying a flag while coming into a foreign port, it is a courtesy to raise the country’s flag, as well as the Q flag, a requirement to identify the boat as not yet inspected. Further it is expected you will fly the flag of the country of documentation. The Customs folk expect such courtesy. Visiting a foreign yacht club flying your burgee is just a yachtee thing that is done, a courtesy. And who knows may get you an offer to have a drink. I sense it is better to have it somewhere, even on a makeshift flag pole then to ignore it.

Ron20324 said: IIRC, the last thread on this subject ended up where my post #4 says. Not all boats have the same facilities for the "proper" place to fly falgs. So, it is whatever works for the skipper&boat. I have about 23 flags I fly all at once, and probably NONE of them are where they "should" be. Besides, they're not "rules", just more like guidelines Click to expand
I just love these threads. Everyone is right. All others are wrong.
It has no stays or shrouds. I do not see why you could not attach an eye to the mast and attach a small block with a halyard to the deck. Just seems it would ruin the aesthetics of a free-standing mast. Maybe fly it off the masthead? Or off a staff attached to the stern pulpit?

jviss said: A yacht club burgee is usually flown at the peak on a pig-stick. The Hunter Vision certainly does have at least two halyards, or you wouldn't be able to raise your sails! I was suggesting a flag halyard (or two) to the top. A friend of mine had a Nonsuch with a similarly un-stayed, i.e., cantilevered mast, and he had a couple of flag halyards in addition to the main halyard. Same issue with Freedom yachts. Then there's this: https://forums.sailboatowners.com/index.php?threads/2nd-main-halyard-on-a-hunter-vision-mast.41926/ Click to expand
