Gentleman Sailor: Testing the IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Chronograph

iwc yacht club grey

IWC launched the Portugieser Yacht Club in 2010 into the sporty yet elegant world of sailing. For 2020, the nautical chronograph model has a classic look and a steel bracelet upgrade. We give it a thorough review in this feature from the WatchTime archives.

iwc yacht club grey

The new IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Chronograph is a watch you can wear with confidence anywhere at the marina. A first glance shows that the third generation of the sportiest Portugieser model, our test watch, is designed to be both a nautical timepiece and a luxury accessory. The first impression is confirmed upon closer inspection of its polished and satin-finish case, sunburst blue dial and brightly polished hands. Every component is flawlessly finished and worthy to be part of the supremely elegant Portugieser collection.

For the first time in its 10-plus-year history, this Portugieser Yacht Club boasts a steel bracelet rather than a rubber or leather strap — a sturdy but elegant IWC steel bracelet with brushed outer links and polished inner links. Shortening the bracelet involves simply pressing a button on the back of each row of sturdy links to remove it. Unlike simpler bracelet designs, using screws or hammering is not needed.

iwc yacht club grey

Inside the safety folding clasp, there is also a quick extension piece that quickly and easily lengthens the bracelet by up to 7 mm. Pressing the polished “IWC” button on the outer bar of the clasp extends the bracelet in seven increments — without ever removing the watch from your wrist. Two safety buttons round out the sturdy and well-designed folding clasp.

Detailed Modifications In addition to the bracelet, the dial has also been updated. The central chronograph hand is now steel-gray instead of red, and the date window has been shifted from the 3 o’clock position to the small seconds subdial at 6 o’clock. Both changes enhance the elegance of the Yacht Club and were well received by our editorial staff.

The elegant impression is diminished, however, by the enlargement of the already considerable stainless-steel case from 43.5 mm to 44.6 mm. Our editorial staff admitted that no one among them had a wrist to match its substantial dimensions.

Even so, the large, heavy watch is quite comfortable to wear thanks to ergonomically shaped sloping lugs and a supple steel bracelet. Unfortunately, the flexibility and adjustability of the IWC’s bracelet results in relatively large gaps between the links, which can catch and pull hair.

Proven Technology Components taken from earlier generations of the Yacht Club include the sturdy and powerful in-house movement, Caliber 89361, with many excellent features like a 68-hour power reserve; a traditional column-wheel control mechanism; the brand’s own exceptionally efficient Pellaton dual-pawl winding system; a free-sprung, temperature-resistant Glucydur balance wheel; and a flyback function for the direct restarting of the running chronograph. It can also show off beautiful decorative finishes, gold-enhanced engraving and a gold IWC medallion on the skeletonized oscillating rotor. Another feature of the in-house movement is the combined 12-hour and 60-minute counter in the upper half of the dial, which is intended to show elapsed time intuitively, as on a clock. The combined counter is too small for everyday use, however, and its markings are too fine to read elapsed time to the minute quickly and easily. The chronograph seconds track around the dial is also extremely fine, and the central chronograph seconds hand is insufficiently long to fully reach it. In sum, it’s a mixed bag, with clearly legible time and date, and elapsed time that is much more difficult to read.

iwc yacht club grey

Accurate Rate Our rate test revealed more about the Swiss movement. The electronic timing machine showed a negligibly small daily rate of +0.8 seconds, a maximum deviation between the positions of only 4 seconds and almost the same values when the chronograph is engaged. A two-week wearing test confirmed the small daily deviation with values between zero and +2 seconds — making our test watch a reliable partner for everyday use.

In addition to the movement, another feature of the Yacht Club that hasn’t changed arouses mixed feelings — the pressure resistance of six bar that corresponds to water pressure at a depth of 60 meters. Although this may sound like a lot at first, the water resistance as it is tested under laboratory conditions is rather low for a nautical luxury sports watch linked to the world of sailing. Coming in contact with spray or waves means a watch should be resistant to at least 10 bar or 100 meters to ensure a certain degree of security in a variety of different environments. And even though this still isn’t a lot, it is the current standard for any water sports watch not explicitly designed for diving.

iwc yacht club grey

Advice for boat owners is simply this: it’s better to wear this watch in the evening, below deck, or to dinner at the marina, and either take it easy onboard during the day or rely on a sports watch that is clearly defined as such. The new Portugieser Yacht Club Chronograph is well equipped for normal everyday wear and light sports activities — and is the perfect gentleman sailor for social events on or below deck.

SCORES: Strap and clasp (max. 10 points): Very attractive, highly functional stainless-steel bracelet with safety folding clasp and quick extension. Large gaps between links. 9 Operation (5): Generously sized, smoothly operating pushers are easier to use than the screw-down crown. The large crown is easy to turn but needs some force to pull out. The chronograph has a flyback function for direct restart of an ongoing timing sequence. 4 Case (10): The case is beautifully finished but is rather simple and water resistant to only 60 meters. 8 Design (15): Attractive combination of sportiness and elegance. The superior quality of every component is easily apparent. 14 Legibility (5): The time and date are both easy to read, but elapsed time presents more difficulty. Bright luminous material. 4 Wearing comfort (10): The heavy watch lies comfortably on the wrist, but the metal bracelet catches fine wrist hair. 7 Movement (20): The in-house caliber stands out with its column wheel, Glucydur balance, fine regulation, extended power reserve, efficient dual-pawl winding mechanism and attractive decorations. 17 Rate results (10): The watch can boast absolute reliability with an average daily gain of 0.8 seconds and a maximum deviation between the positions of 4 seconds. Individual values are similar even when the chronograph is engaged. 9 Overall value (15): IWC has created a luxury chronograph at a high price, but it has a lot to offer. 11 Total: 83 POINTS

Beautiful execution of details. Good to see that IWC decided to upgrade the Portugieser from quasigirly watch to man-sized. It’s hardly an Arni watch though.

I would buy this watch in a second (no pun intended) except for the high price. As for the increased diameter, I have a large wrist and do not buy watches less than 43 mm. Smaller diameters look terrible on me. If you need a large diameter watch reviewer, let me know. Thanks.

Two big problems for me. The size (too big), very few people have wrist size like Arni, water tightness 60m is a joke.

I really like this IWC watch, however, it’s shallow water resistance at the price, is a non-starter. IWC is certainly capable of increasing the water resistance range.

I always enjoy my Watchtime magazine when it arrives, and the email updates. Regarding IWC’s new Yacht Club, I think it is a beautiful watch. I have a large wrist, so, I will not wear a watch under 43mm. Smaller watches look too small. I do have trouble with the 60 meter water resistance, but find myself looking at this watch over and over in your magazine. That is when I know I want it. Hope to order one in the near future.

I’m veary interested in watches and would love to know more about them. I would like to see , the new modells.

Introducing The IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide

A nautical theme to the extreme..

iwc yacht club grey

If you're going to make a watch line up dedicated to the yacht club – which IWC established as a subset of the Portugieser in 2010 – a tide-indicating complication only makes natural sense. (The name was first used, of course, in 1967, for a watch intended to be an all-weather but still club-elegant sports watch.) So, 10 years into the Yacht Club family line, IWC has just announced the new reference IW344001 Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide. Presented in red gold with a shining blue dial and a matching blue rubber strap, this new Portugieser certainly looks the part while debuting IWC's newly developed tide-following complication.

iwc yacht club grey

First things first, with a 44.6mm wide case, the Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide is as large as it is pretty. The Yacht Club line has always done a good job of communicating a blend of both sport and elegance. While the use of a gold case on the Yacht Club Moon & Tide is decidedly foncy, the blue rubber strap does a nice job of striking a boat-ready balance. I especially like the red dial details, the clarity of the overall display, and the splash-ready 30 meters of water resistance.

Using a newly-developed caliber 82835 manufacture movement, the Yacht Club Moon & Tide offers a brand new feature set that expands upon the dual hemisphere moon phase display that IWC has made strong use of with many of their perpetual calendar models. With a minimal addition of text surrounding the moon phase display, the Yacht Club Moon & Tide also notes the strength of the tides by making a differentiation between spring and neap tides.

iwc yacht club grey

Combine that slight moon phase modification with a novel tide timing indication at six o'clock, and you've got a $34,000 IWC that can help you to better manage the ebb and flow of the tides. While not many of us need a watch that can offer such information, the complication feels both right at home within the Portugieser Yacht Club line up and a fittingly nautical way of saluting the Yacht Club on its 10th anniversary.

One of Switzerland’s major luxury watch companies was started by an American who saw the potential of bringing Switzerland’s superb watchmaking into the modern age through industrialized manufacturing and high-precision interchangeable parts. The New Hampshire–born watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones (1841–1916), who founded International Watch Company — known today as simply IWC — in 1868, was interested in “combining all the excellence of the American system of mechanism with the more skillful hand labor of the Swiss.”

Setting up the company with another American watchmaker, Charles Kidder, in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, Jones used hydropower from the River Rhine for his plant’s machinery. Rethinking watch design would lead to one of IWC’s early successes: the Pallweber pocket watch . Based on an 1883 patent by Austrian watchmaker Josef Pallweber, the watch employed numbered disks for jumping hour and minute displays, making it a pioneer in digital timekeeping.

After Johann Rauschenbach-Vogel took over the watch manufacturer in 1880, four generations of his family led IWC into the 20th century. In 1905, Ernst Jakob Homberger and his brother-in-law Carl Jung — the famed Swiss psychiatrist — acquired IWC. Homberger bought out Jung’s holdings in 1929, and in the 1930s, the company introduced pilot watches, which were particularly robust and aimed solely at the civil aviation industry. These durable wristwatches were designed specifically to remain operational during extreme temperature shifts. (As blue watch dials are particularly hot right now, IWC's blue-dial Big Pilot is having a moment .)

The company still operates alongside the river where it was founded, having gained an international reputation over the past 150 years for its elegant designs and expert craftsmanship. Vintage IWC watches are prized by collectors — of whom there are many these days — and while the company continues to guard its attention to detail and quality, it has pushed its classic designs forward with modern innovation intended to stand the test of time.

IWC’s 2013 Ingenieur watch collection, with its precision based on an inventive constant-force mechanism, looked back to a 1955 Ingenieur model that featured a durable soft-iron inner cage as well as a 1976 update by leading Swiss watch designer Gérald Genta that encased its mechanism in a sleek steel case. IWC has also had a recent push toward sustainability, designing watches that are made to last a lifetime and beyond and earning the highest environmental ranking of any Swiss watch company in a 2018 report published by the World Wide Fund for Nature Switzerland ( WWF ).

The best golf clubs in moscow: luxury, exclusivity, and entertainment.

  • The Best Golf Clubs in…

In Russia, the western concept of building architecturally beautiful golf courses filled with modern and luxurious amenities has found fertile ground. What was considered a frivolous pastime during the time of the Soviets has become the latest trend for the stylish set. These days, there are countless options around Moscow to practice golf, polo, ski, yachting, and other sports alongside 5-star hotels, luxurious country houses, and magnificent villas.

The game of golf is a sport that requires passion and expertise. It is also part of a culture that considers this pastime a synonym of social prestige and exclusivity. In recent years, the new Russian elite has turned to golf as a vehicle of integration in the era of globalization. Golf courses are also meeting and socializing spaces where Muscovite tycoons can relax and also seal business deals.

Golf Courses in Russia

The Moscow Country Club, Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club, Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club, and Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia are some of the most exclusive and elegant golf courses in Russia. Some of them have made it to the list of Top 15 golf clubs in the world, a source of great prestige for the country.

The first 18-hole golf course built in Russia, Moscow Country Club, hosts the exclusive PGA European Tour. Located just eight miles from the city center, this luxurious facility was created by architect Robert Trent Jones Jr . The design takes advantage of a typical Russian birch and spruce forest to provide a natural environment of extraordinary beauty.

The Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is 18 miles from the heart of Moscow, close to historical monuments from the 17th and 18th centuries. Designed by famed architects Paul and Dave Thomas , this 18-hole course is part of a complex that includes a yacht club, an equestrian center, and a health and wellness facility. Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is Russia’s version of a classic country club with multiple attractions.

This park is among the best in Eastern Europe and was awarded the 2014 World Golf Award as the best golf course in Russia. Located 25 miles from Moscow, it is part of a vast complex featuring an 18-hole golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus , a polo club and a mountain ski club with four tracks. The design combines classic Scottish, Alpine, and English features in a dreamy landscape.

Less than 60 miles from Moscow, this golf course with a definite Scottish design is the only one in Russia recognized as a PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association) from Britain and Ireland. Located in an ecologically pristine area on the banks of the Volga River, the Zavidovo Golf Club embodies the spirit and appearance of the legendary Scottish golf courses. Its many springs and streams, hills, forests, swamps and lakes justify its reputation as a very demanding circuit. Last year, it entered the exclusive club of the 15 best golf courses in the world.   ■

“Breakfast & Lunch among friends”

The Breakfast Club has been a locally-owned Moscow breakfast staple for 12 years. The food is delicious, and the portions are appropriate (not gigantic). They have stuffed biscuits and gravy which is biscuits cut in half with eggs and bacon in the middle, covered in in-house made sausage gravy. If you are ever in Moscow in the wee hours of the morning, this is the place to stop!!!

Character Analysis Puck

Oberon's jester and lieutenant, Puck is a powerful supernatural creature, capable of circling the globe in 40 minutes or of enshrouding unsuspecting mortals in a deep fog. Also known as Robin Goodfellow, Puck would have been familiar to a sixteenth-century English audience, who would have recognized him as a common household spirit also often associated with travelers. But he's also a "puck," an elf or goblin that enjoys playing practical jokes on mortals. Although he is more mischievous than malevolent, Puck reminds us that the fairy world is not all goodness and generosity.

Another definition of his name aligns him with a Norse demon, sometimes associated with the devil. Perhaps it isn't surprising that he brings a somewhat more dangerous element to Titania and Oberon's seemingly benevolent fairy realm. He invokes the "damned spirits" that wander home to graveyards after a night of evil doing, while Oberon reminds him that his band of fairies are aligned with the morning dew, with sunlight and joy. Unlike Oberon who genuinely tries to create human happiness, Puck seems indifferent to human suffering. When he has accidentally caused both Lysander and Demetrius to fall in love with Helena, Puck enjoys the pleasure their folly brings him. Although he restores the proper lovers to each other, he does so only at Oberon's request, not out of any feelings of remorse. Similarly, Oberon feels repentance for Titania's idiotic love for Bottom, but Puck doesn't. While Oberon and Titania bless the newlyweds in Act V, Puck reminds the audience of the dangers of the night, graves gaping open and wolves howling at the moon. As a traditional Shakespearean fool, Puck makes us aware of the darker side of life, the underworld realm of shadows and magic and, ultimately, death.

Puck, A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Puck is a character in Shakespeare’s play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream . His name is Robin Goodfellow but he’s known as Puck in the play. He is one of the fairies who inhabit the forest, and is the servant of the Fairy King, Oberon .

In Puck Shakespeare has included a character out of European folklore into the play – a mischievous fairy, not quite malicious, but annoying, who plays practical jokes on people without intending any harm. He is blamed for things like objects going missing, milk going sour, and so on, as a kind of scapegoat for those incidents. Sometimes he will be held responsible for a bit of good luck as well. He exists everywhere in European folklore, under different identities – for example, a ‘kobold’ in Germany, a ‘brownie’ in Scotland, and in England, a ‘hobgoblin.’

Nick Piacente as Puck character in A Midsummer Night’s Dream

When we first meet Puck in Act 2 Scene 1 he introduces himself in a conversation with another fairy, boasting about what a mischievous fellow he is, and what he does to people.

I am that merry wanderer of the night. I jest to Oberon and make him smile When I a fat and bean-fed horse beguile, Neighing in likeness of a filly foal: And sometime lurk I in a gossip’s bowl, In very likeness of a roasted crab, And when she drinks, against her lips I bob And on her wither’d dewlap pour the ale. The wisest aunt, telling the saddest tale, Sometime for three-foot stool mistaketh me; Then slip I from her bum, down topples she, And ‘tailor’ cries, and falls into a cough; And then the whole quire hold their hips and laugh, And waxen in their mirth and neeze and swear A merrier hour was never wasted there.

Puck is loyal to Oberon and will do anything the fairy king asks of him. At the moment the king and h is queen, Titania , are in a dispute over an Indian child whom she has adopted. He wants to raise the child in his ways but Titania won’t give him up to him. Oberon instructs Puck to find a particular flower that has the magical quality of making whoever has its juice squeezed into their eyes fall in love with whatever creature they first see when they next open them. He is to squeeze it into Titania’s eyes while she is sleeping.

Puck does that and she wakes and first sees the narcissistic Bottom, who Puck has turned into an ass by placing an ass’s head on his shoulders, because of his ass-like behaviour. That produces some of the funniest scenes in all of Shakespeare’s plays. It is part of the sub-plot, however. The main action regarding the magic potion is about the four lovers wandering in the forest.

The story of the four lovers is complicated. Briefly, they have run away in pairs, with a love triangle at the centre of the story. Oberon instructs Puck to sort it out, using the love potion, but Puck makes a mistake and puts the potion in the wrong young man’s eyes, which leads to great confusion which, in turn, has to be sorted out, which Puck finally manages to do. In the meantime, while all that business goes on Puck, invisible to them, watches with amusement, commenting on the action, confusing them with comments of his own, imitating their voices, and laughing along with the audience.

At the end of the play Puck plays the role usually assigned to the stage manager. He makes a speech, addressing the audience directly. He suggests that anyone who might have been offended by the play’s events should, like the characters, consider that the whole performance was just a dream.

Character analysis of puck ambre smith.

Considered one of William Shakespeare's greatest plays, A Midsummer Nights Dream reads like a fantastical, imaginative tale; however, its poetic lines contain a message of love, reality, and chance that are not usually present in works of such kind. All characters in the play are playful, careless and thoughtless, and Puck: one of the central characters in the play: is significant to the plot, tone, and meaning of A Midsummer Nights Dream, thus becoming a representative of the above-mentioned themes.

The plot in this one of Shakespeare's plays is comical and, at times, ironic. As summarized by Puck in the last stanza of the play:

If we shadows have offended Think but this, and all is mended: That you have but slumb'red here While these visions did appear. And this weak and idle theme No more yielding but a dream Gentles do not reprehend: If you pardon, we will mend. And, as I am an honest Puck If we have unearned luck Now to scape the serpent's tongue We will make amends ere long; Else the Puck a liar call: So, good night unto you all. Give me your hands, if we be friends, And Robin shall restorer amends. (Shakespeare 89)

Puck suggests to both the watchers and, consequently, to the readers, that if they did not enjoy the...

Puck’s Character in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by William Shakespeare Essay

Puck, or Robin Goodfellow, is one of the important characters of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. The essay focuses on Puck’s important role in the play. The essay delves on the power of Puck to change the love interests of the two parties. Puck’s important role in the play is grounded on pranks and magic to brighten the Shakespearean masterpiece, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.

In the timeless Shakespearean masterpiece, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Puck is the most important and dynamic character in the play. Puck, or Robin Goodfellow is Oberon’s jester and servant. He is a mischievous fairy. His major role is to add variety to the intensely romantic Athens love story.

Puck injects comedic mischief to the play. He also adds color to the Shakespearean masterpiece by his irresponsible acts. He has a similar small character as Oberon. Puck boasts that he can effortlessly travel around the world. Likewise, he is good example of a person eager to do good deeds in all possible situations.

Between doing good deeds and playing practical jokes, Puck, or Robin Goodfellow, prefers to focus more of his precious time playing practical jokes on the two lovers. The two lovers are Titania and Lysander.Puck, or Robin Goodfellow looks at love as one of the jokes to be implemented. Puck, or Robin Goodfellow, shows similar love characteristics as mortals living on earth (Carey 12).

Puck, or Robin Goodfellow, has a wonderful personality of laughing whenever unhappy situations crop up. Likewise, this Shakespearean character is comfortable whenever there is a change of emotions. In addition, Puck, or Robin Goodfellow, displays several instances of philosophical prudence.

The readers of the Shakespeare’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream” play will surely love the Puck, or Robin Goodfellow, In any play, the mixture of different personalities, especially Puck, help to enthusiastically increase the readers’ interest to continue reading the Shakespearan play until the last paragraph.

Specifically, Scene 2 of Act III shows Puck complying with his master’s instructions to interfere with the lovers. Titania is accompanied by a monster in love. Puck has placed the nectar of a magic flower on the eyes of Titania to enchant her to fall in love with the first male person she sees.

Further, Puck has stopped the rehearsal Quince’s play. Quince’s band was preparing their part for Theseaus’ wedding day. Puck was successful in dispersing the actors from their scheduled play practice. Many of the actors scampered along the forest in complete chaotic order.

In addition, Puck had transformed Bottom’s head from a human head to an ass’s head. The head transformation frightens the people around Bottom. They all scamper in many directions. Most importantly, Puck was able to enchant Titania to magically fall in love with the Bottom. During this time of Titania’s love enchantment, Bottom has an ass’s head. Titania is the queen of Fairies.

In terms of jesting, Puck unintentionally puts the nectar or magic flower on the yes of Lysander, who is sound asleep. The magic flower causes Lysander to forsake Lysander to replace his true love, Hermia for Helena (Carey 37). Seeing Helena, Lysander falls madly in love with her and is surprised at why he is in love with Hermia.

In turn, Helena reminds Lysander that Hermia should be his only love. Helena runs away to avoid Lysander’s love overtures. In Act IV scene 1, the story proceeds with Puck obeying his master’s command to remove the enchantments on both Titania and Lysander. Puck eagerly obeys Oberon’s instructions to correct what Puck had twisted magically (Carey 9).

Based on the above discussion, Puck, or Robin Goodfellow, is one of the enchanting characters of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. Puck’s important role in the play is grounded on frankness. The power of Puck includes the magical power to change the love interests of Titania and Lysander. Indeed, Puck’s major part is based on pranks and magic to spice up the Shakespearean masterpiece, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.

Robin Goodfellow, a Puck

Puck, or Robin Goodfellow, simultaneously performs two roles. On the one hand, we face a military man, as Lieutenant of Oberon. But on the other hand, it is a powerful spirit that travels around the world and takes on the appearance of a person. He can be perceived as an elf because he also likes to joke about mere mortals. But his character does not differ maliciously. Puck reminds readers of the existence of a magic world, where not all wizards are kind and generous. If Oberon fights for the happiness of people, then Puck shows indifference to their suffering. Sometimes, it seems that he deliberately brings a particle of evil into human relationships. It is worth remembering the episode with the mad love between Demetrius and Lysander, which ended well only thanks to Oberon's request. Puck serves as a kind of reminder of the presence of two sides of the medal, light and dark ones, so we should not take life one-dimensionally.

INTRODUCTION 1.1 UNIT BACKGROUND A Midsummer Night’s Dream, comedy in five acts by William Shakespeare, written about 1595–96 and published in 1600 in a quarto edition from the author’s manuscript, in which there are some minor inconsistencies. The version published in the First Folio of 1623 was taken from a second quarto edition, with some reference to a promptbook. One of the “great” or “middle” comedies, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, with its multilayered examination of love and its vagaries, has long been one of the most popular of Shakespeare’s plays.

1.2 UNIT PURPOSE The purpose of this paper is to analysis one of the characters from A Midsummer Night’s Dream named Puck, a mischievous fairy that has an important role in this play.

PLAYWRIGHT BIOGRAPHY William Shakespeare was an English playwright, actor and poet and is often called England’s national poet. Born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, he was an important member of the Lord Chamberlain’s Men company of theatrical players from roughly 1594 onward. Written records give little indication of the way in which Shakespeare’s professional life molded his artistry. All that can be deduced is that, in his 20 years as a playwright, Shakespeare wrote plays that capture the complete range of human emotion and conflict. Known throughout the world, the works of William Shakespeare have been performed in countless hamlets, villages, cities and metropolises for more than 400 years. And yet, the personal history of William Shakespeare is somewhat a mystery. There are two primary sources that provide historians with a basic outline of his life. One source is his work — the plays, poems and sonnets — and the other is official documentation such as church and court records. However, these only provide brief sketches of specific events in his life and provide little on the person who experienced those events. Scant records exist of William’s childhood and virtually none regarding his education. Scholars have surmised that he most likely attended the King’s New School, in Stratford, which taught reading, writing and the classics. Being a public official’s child, William would have undoubtedly qualified for free tuition. But this uncertainty regarding his education has led some to raise questions about the authorship of his work and even about whether or not William Shakespeare ever existed. Between about 1590 and 1613, Shakespeare wrote at least 37 plays and collaborated on several more. His 17 comedies include The Merchant of Venice and Much Ado About Nothing. Among his 10 history plays are Henry V and Richard III. The most famous among his tragedies are Hamlet, Othello, King Lear and Macbeth. Shakespeare also wrote 4 poems, and a famous collection of Sonnets which was first published in 1609. William Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway on November 28, 1582, in Worcester, in Canterbury Province. Hathaway was from Shottery, a small village a mile west of Stratford. William was 18 and Anne was 26, and, as it turns out, pregnant. Their first child, a daughter they named Susanna, was born on May 26, 1583. Two years later, on February 2, 1585, twins Hamnet and Judith were born. Hamnet later died of unknown causes at age 11.

THEORY AND METHODS 3.1 THEORY This analysis is using a Characterization Theory. In terms of characterization, Jones (1968: 84) says that characterization is the depicting of clear imagines of person. He continuous saying about characterization as follows: “There are two methods of characterization: The Dramatic and the Analytic. In the dramatic we form our opinion of the characters from what they do and say, from their environment and from what other characters think of them. In the analytic method the author comments upon the characters explaining their motives, their appearances and their thoughts.”

3.2 METHODS This paper is using close reading methods. Close reading is a method of literary analysis which focuses on the specific details of a passage or text in order to discern some deeper meaning present in it. The meaning derived from the close reading is the reader’s interpretation of the passage or text. Close reading tends to rely on the principle that no details are present in a text by “accident.” The author’s conscious intentions in writing are often insignificant, as unconscious layers of meaning or even prejudices may be sublimated into literary works. Regardless of whether an author consciously or unconsciously constructs a particular meaning in a text, if details are present which support that interpretation, it is valid. RESEARCH OBJECT 4.1 MATERIAL AND FORM OBJECT A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of Shakespeare’s early “festive comedies” written around 1595. Despite the many thematic references to “dreams” and the fantastic setting of the Athenian forest, the play also contains a fair amount of commentary on Shakespeare’s contemporary English world. 4.2 SUMMARY OF THE PLAY Aegeus is an Athenian nobleman. He had a daughter named Hermia and he wants her daughter to marry a guy named Demetrius but she disobeyed him because she already in love with another guy named Lysander. Aegeus demands Theseus, the Duke of Athens to forces his daughter by invoking Athenian law which requires a daughter to obey her father or face death. Hermia and Lysander make a plan to run away from the law and they tell Helena, the one who once engaged to Demetrius. Hoping to get him back, Helena tells Demetrius about the plan but he still rejecting her love and decide to stalk Hermia into the woods. Oberon, the king of fairies had a fight with Tania the fairy queen quarrel over a young Indian prince. Oberon seeking a revenge by asking his merry servant, Puck, to acquire a magical flower. Puck obtains the flower and Oberon asks him to spread its juice over Titania’s eyelids hoping that she would falling in love with first living creature. Oberon also tells Puck to spread the juice over a young Athenian guy after he saw Demetrius act cruelly toward Helena but Puck did a mistake by spreading the juice over Lysander. Puck also do pranks to Athenian craftsmen who are rehearsing the play around Tania’s sleeping place by changing one of the actor’s head with a donkey head hoping that Tania would instantly fall in love with the actors right after she wakes up. Things got complicated until Oberon gives Puck another flower and tells him to spread it over Lysander’s eyelids so he can love Hermia like it used to be. Oberon removes the spell off from Titania whom in love with donkey-headed actor and then Puck take the actor’s head back. The plays end with Theseus agrees that two young couples can marry.

ANALYSIS 5.1 INTRINSIC ANALYSIS Puck is the mischievous sprite who serves Oberon, the Fairy King. He is harmless but he likes to pranks human characters for the sake of his enjoyment. Another fairy called him a “hobgoblin” a term whose connotations are decidedly less glamorous than other fairies. Puck triggers many of the play’s most memorable events because of his mischievous nature but actually he is the kind-hearted fairy because he had the willingness to fix things that got complicated.

CONCLUSION 6.1 SUMMARY In A Midsummer Night’s Dream there is no true protagonist character. Puck is a kind of dynamic character because he changes significantly during the course of the story. He drives the plot forward with his impish pranks (changing actor’s head into a donkey head) and his unfortunate mistakes (spreading the magical flower over the wrong Athenian). 6.2 SUGGESTION Puck is a character who always ruin things but he is also a kind-hearted fairy at some point. Sometimes, there is a mischievous side in yourself but you must remember that you have responsibilities in everything you do. Do not be like Puck in being mischievous for the sake of your enjoyment, but be like Puck in your willingness to fix things that got complicated.

A Midsummer Nights Dream

Character Analysis of Puck

Considered one of William Shakespeare’s greatest plays, A Midsummer Nights Dream reads like a fantastical, imaginative tale; however, its poetic lines contain a message of love, reality, and chance that are not usually present in works of such kind. All characters in the play are playful, careless and thoughtless, and Puck: one of the central characters in the play: is significant to the plot, tone, and meaning of A Midsummer Nights Dream, thus becoming a representative of the above-mentioned themes. The plot in this one of Shakespeare’s plays is comical and, at times, ironic. As summarized by Puck in the last stanza of the play:If we shadows have offendedThink but this, and all is mended: That you have but slumb’red hereWhile these visions did appear. And this weak and idle themeNo more yielding but a dreamGentles do not reprehend: If you pardon, we will mend. And, as I am an honest PuckIf we have unearned luck Now to scape the serpent’s tongueWe will make amends ere long; Else the Puck a liar call: So, good night unto you all. Give me your hands, if we be friends, And Robin shall restorer amends. (Shakespeare 89)Puck suggests to both the watchers and, consequently, to the readers, that if they did not enjoy the tale, they should pretend it was a dream: a notion so convincing that at times the audience is left bewildered; this effect of his works made Shakespeare seem so cunning, like Puck. The lines above formulate the ending of the play to be ironic and humorous, much in the same way as the rest of the story was told. The general plot, with certain characters implementing stresses on puns more than others, also contributed to the wit in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Such cunning manner that Shakespeare had developed was often found in the play in ironic forms when one character in the book says something that is a pun on words, or has several meanings, such as when Puck states,”[a]nd, as I am and honest Puck/ Else the Puck a liar call: (Shakespeare 90).” In Shakespeare’s time the Puck was never honest and always lied in order to play his pranks on people. Therefore, the audience was deceived into believing that the story was a dream. Many stanzas were woven into the plot that contained deep critical thoughts behind them that made the scenario of the scenes intricate and deceptive. Puck’s important role contributed to these situations is obvious in the unfolding of his character to seem illusory and fanciful. Puck also tied up the story in parts where the plot was getting serious to make them clever and amusing to watch. The plot of this play contained many different phrases that made the story line intriguing and Puck helped emphasize the comedic side of characters in the tale and of Shakespeare’s writing of the play. The tone of the entire play is slightly satirical, but overall good-natured toward the characters. Historically, Puck has been part of English folklore for a long time, even before Shakespeare. His other name of Robin Goodfellow meant that “[t]he spirit was not actually good by nature, but was called Goodfellow as a sort of appeasement, meant to deflect the spirit’s pranks towards other people” (Bulfinch). Puck during Shakespeare’s time was a mischievous creature that was known for his evil-like, unserious, playful ways. His other name, Hobgoblin, suggests the true meaning of his nature. In the second half of the play, the characters undergo a change in attitude towards each other, because of the antics Puck administrated. Puck wanders around dispensing a love potion into mortal’s eyes, making them fall in love with the unsuitable member of the opposite sex. Shakespeare, as an author, is playing with the characters and because of Puck, the roles of the characters are switched, making the play more appealing in a comical sense of view. To make the manner of the play pay off with deep meaning despite the comical plot, metaphors were said by many of the characters such as this one, “I go, I go; look how I go/ Swifter than arrow form the Tarter’s bow” (Shakespeare 45). The Tarters were people whom fought with the Mongol hordes, and had bows that contained a special power, to make them faster than a bolt of lightning. The excerpts connotation demonstrates that Puck was meandering around the forest so fast that he causes the characters in the play many harms, like a bow. The ironic, playful tone that the play embodies is accomplished through the adventurous mishaps of Puck. Many meanings can be deciphered from this play, and can be interpreted in numerous ways; one of them revealing the extent to which human beings are too easily swayed and subjected to non-reality, chance, and love by appearance and emotions. “What fools these mortals be!” (Shakespeare 46) expresses Puck, his one line hinting at several possible interpretations. One reads in the above line Shakespeare’s idea that humans become too readily affected by their feelings. Puck states with exclamatory emphasis that mortals are fools because they cannot control their emotions properly and are never sure on what they feel in their inner self. Chance is too often taken as shown in “A Midsummer Nights Dream” by Puck, when Puck states “[t]his is the women, but not this the man” (Shakespeare 43). Oberon has taken a chance with love when he describes the Athenian man Puck is to distribute the love potion on, and that chance was wrongfully took, for Puck put the potion onto some other man, who was not supposed to be emitted with it. This also shows that there is some mockery to Pucks statement for not do only mortals fool around with love, so do pixies. Reality is often mixed up with, mystical thoughts as well as feelings. Shakespeare must have realized this because he often showed implications in his plays of this type, for example: when Titania expresses her love for a mortal with an asses head on him and she says “Come, sit thee down upon this flow’ry bed, While I thy amiable cheeks do coy, And stick musk roses in thy sleek smooth head, And kiss thy fair large ears, my gentle joy” (Shakespeare 62). This exemplifies the type of ridicule Shakespeare had his characters go through so that he could express a point, thus he had to make other characters such as Puck help contribute to these happenings. Therefore, the deep meaning of the play is much more intricate than the eye can see, and because of Pucks actions these imperative meanings came out to be.Overall, the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream contains many important features that are represented by Puck. The in-depth analysis of every character depends on the actions and attributes of other characters and Puck helps contribute to deceitful aura of the play. Another key factor of this play were its many inclinations toward a comical relief and Puck’s involvements of making mishaps occur. The mood, implication, and scheme are all carefully weaved together in the play, with Puck being a symbol or a catalyst for nearly every one of them.

Puck: Character Analysis

Filed Under: Essays Tagged With: Audience , fairy

One of the most interesting characters in Shakespeare’s play, Midsummer Night’s Dream, is Puck. Puck’s whimsical spirit, magical fancy, fun-loving humor, and lovely, evocative language permeate the atmosphere of the play. Being brought to the audience’s attention when carrying out Oberon’s orders, Puck is often overlooked in relation to the attention given to other events occurring in each plot. Puck is servant and jester to the Fairy King Oberon and it is his charm and enchantment that serves useful to him and also Oberon. He is poised but not as sugary as the other fairies; as Oberon’s jester, he is given to a certain roughness, which leads him to transform Bottom’s head into that of an ass merely for the sake of enjoyment. Being a fairy of a mischievous nature is what leads Puck into triggering many of the memorable moments in the play. It is because of Puck’s many different character tendencies, along with his ever present mischievous nature that it is possible to analyze his character in three different ways.

The first way to analyze Puck is through his own eyes. A fairy many be the simplest way to describe Puck but he knows he is seen well as a goblin, or a creature of chaos. Agreeing that the previous would more accurately fit his description, Puck knows that he is prone to misadventure and cruel but good-hearted tricks. Knowing that Puck is a mischief maker and creator of chaos, Oberon still relies on him to carry out his orders that way he intends for them to happen. To puck chaos is correct, and it is that chaos that Oberon secretly relies on.

The Essay on Oedipus And Fate Character Play Destiny

To what extent is Oedipus responsible for his own fate Before we approach this complex question inductively, we are at first obliged to contemplate what definitions and assumptions are being made. This essay, perhaps more so than others, requires a more extensive look at this aspect of the question, because of the sheer variety of possible responses. However, I now have reduced them to three ...

When Oberon sends Puck to Titania and her lover, Bottom, it easily foreseen before Puck even arrives that something unfortunate would soon spoil Titania’s evening. Here Puck’s lighthearted, yet cruel trickery gets the best of him where he could not but help himself in turning Bottom’s head into that of an ass. Also, without his wit, creativity, and trickery, Puck would not have been able to trick the mortal men into chasing him. Puck is able only then to lead the mortal men far into the forest where eventually they both tire and fall asleep. Puck knows that his mischievous nature is more than just his entertainment, but that it is also his greatest strength that proves to be useful to his master, Oberon, himself, and also the audience.

A second way to view Puck is as a bringer of love, a Cupid of some sort. Although the concept of the love spell was Oberon’s, he delegates the task to Puck. The mortals are not important enough for him to take care of himself and so he delegates this responsibility to puck, acting almost as Hermes to Zeus. As previously stated, Puck is fun-loving and prone to unfortunate mistakes and with this in Oberon’s full knowledge Puck is still given the flower with the power of love. After receiving the flower Puck sets off with the best of intention but his personality wins out.

Upon seeing the mortals lying sleeping, Puck confuses which mortal man he is to put the spell on and chooses the wrong one. Creating havoc rather than love, when the mortals wake up Puck realizes what he has done and amused and to some degree pleased, he does not get in any hurry to fix the mistake. He is not sorry, nor does he panic at the thought of Oberon finding out his mistake. Puck instead, blames the misfortune on the lover’s own foolishness. Not having done the work himself the first time, Oberon once again must entrust Puck to undo his mistake. Even after turning the young lover’s world upside down, it is Puck who is sent to restore order and set things right between the lovers, ensuring the play’s happy ending.

In many of Shakespeare’s play there is a character whose main purpose is informing the audience of the important aspects of the past, the present, and the future action of the play. These characters are known as the chorus and are prevalent in many of Shakespeare’s dramas. This is third way to view Puck’s character. Sometimes the events taking place are only discussed by the chorus, and other times the chorus seems to make predictions that lead the audience to expect the event. More often than not though, a twist ending is what the audience usually comes to accept. As the chorus, Puck not only directs the drama of A Midsummer Night’s Dream but brings the audience along with him. He keeps them updated on what has happened and what is happening throughout the play. Given that there are two plots, Puck pulls off the task of narrator and fairy guide effortlessly as he ensures that no one gets lost as the two plots continuously weave in and out of each other.

The Term Paper on Underlying Theme Play Horace Character

Every play written uses dramatic elements. The main dramatic elements are plot, character, theme, and language. Lillian Hellman, who wrote the Little Foxes, incorporates these elements beautifully in her play. The play is set during the spring of 1900 and takes place in the Deep South part of the United States of America. Just as every other play, the Little Foxes has included the dramatic ...

To decide between these three different personalities as to which Puck would more closely fit would be interesting and yet near impossible. It is only when the three personalities are combined that the real exploration and analysis of Puck’s true character can begin. Chaos is usually looked at as a derogatory term, but there can be good and bad chaos. Puck is exactly that, good and bad chaos. In fact, one could say Puck almost perfectly straddles the line between tranquility and chaos in that when it comes to his many unfortunate events, one gets fixed usually before more situations arise. Depending on the recipient of his work, Puck is not evil, just playful enough to cause problems and also smart enough to go back and help undo or fix the multitude of problems he causes throughout the play. Shakespeare’s inclusion of Puck as the form of knowledge shows that there is more to Puck’s character than just a mischievous hobgoblin you see at first glance. His character plays an important, if not major, role in the process of telling the story of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Puck is not to be undermined as just a jokster fairy, but understood in his own right.
