Rotterdamse brug wordt ontmanteld voor gigantisch plezierjacht van Jeff Bezos

Bezos, oud-CEO van Amazon en een van de rijkste mensen ter wereld, heeft bij jachtbouwbedrijf Oceanco in Alblasserdam een megajacht laten bouwen. Naar verluidt kost de boot 430 miljoen euro.

Nu is er een probleem: de Koningshavenbrug heeft een doorvaarhoogte van 40 meter en daardoor kan het jacht er niet onderdoor varen. Daarom heeft de scheepsbouwer de gemeente Rotterdam gevraagd om de brug uit elkaar te halen.

Het middenstuk van de brug moet eruit. Oceanco en Bezos vergoeden de onkosten, meldt Rijnmond . De gemeente besluit in de zomer van dit jaar wanneer de verbouwing gaat plaatsvinden, zegt een woordvoerder van Stadsontwikkeling Rotterdam.

'Het gaat om een incident'

De gemeente Rotterdam beloofde na een renovatie in 2017 dat de brug nooit meer uit elkaar gehaald zou worden, maar nu liggen er toch weer plannen voor demontage klaar.

"Die belofte was niet keihard, het gaat om een incident", zegt de woordvoerder. Het idee om het jacht achter 'De Hef' af te bouwen, is volgens projectleider Marcel Walravens erg onpraktisch. Bovendien is het op het gebied van economie en werkgelegenheid een belangrijk project.

'De Hef' is een icoon van Rotterdam

'De Hef' is ontworpen door Pieter Joosting (1867-1942). De brug is bekend vanwege de recordduik die Lou Vlasblom in 1933 vanaf de brug nam. Twee weken later wilde Jan Tabbernee dat record breken, maar hij overleed bij zijn sprong.

Nadat de brug zijn functie als spoorverbinding was verloren, werd 'De Hef' een rijksmonument. Dat betekent dat de brug niet zomaar aangepast mag worden. Sommigen zien het tijdelijk verwijderen van het middenstuk als een verandering en dat leidt tot protest. De vergunning voor de verbouwing is al wel aangevraagd.

Jeff Bezos buigt voor Rotterdam en heeft zo niets aan zijn jacht

Een van de rijkste mensen ter wereld, Jeff Bezos, liet een jacht bouwen dat zo hoog is, dat-ie niet onder de Rotterdamse brug ‘de Hef’ door kan. Daarom moest de brug worden ontmanteld. Dit lijkt nu niet door te gaan. Hij vreest onder meer voor vandalisme van mensen uit Rotterdam en omstreken.

Het superjacht van een half miljard wordt gebouwd door Oceanco in Alblasserdam. Als de brug weggehaald zou worden, zou het gevaarte het open water op kunnen. Dit plan gaat vooralsnog niet door, zo meldt Trouw .

Rotterdamse brug niet aan de kant voor miljardair

De Nederlandse scheepsbouwer liet de gemeente Rotterdam weten af te zien van het plan de brug te ontmantelen. Dit nadat er begin dit jaar veel ophef ontstond over de plannen van het bedrijf voor Jeff Bezos en zijn jacht. Er zijn zelfs tienduizenden handtekeningen opgehaald tegen het tijdelijk uit elkaar halen van de historische brug.

Medewerkers voelen zich bedreigd en het bedrijf vreest voor vandalisme, zo stelt de krant. Niet vreemd, er zijn immers Rotterdammers die dreigden eieren te gooien naar de jacht van Jeff Bezos.

Het jacht is nog in aanbouw, maar al voor een groot deel af. Hoe Oceanco het schip uiteindelijk ter water gaat laten, is vooralsnog onduidelijk. Mocht het bedrijf toch de brug tijdelijk uit elkaar willen halen, dan heeft het eerst een vergunning nodig van de Rotterdamse gemeente.

Ruim baan voor boot van Bezos: Rotterdamse brug moet wijken

Amazon-oprichter Jeff Bezos laat momenteel een luxejacht bouwen door de Nederlandse scheepsbouwer Oceanco. Het wordt zo'n enorm gevaarte dat het niet onder de Rotterdamse Koningshavenbrug door kan. Daarom wordt die brug tijdelijk gedemonteerd.

Het middenstuk van de brug, die ook wel bekendstaat onder de naam De Hef, wordt aankomende zomer tijdelijk tussen de dragers uitgehaald. Dat bevestigt woordvoerster Frances van Heijst van de gemeente Rotterdam na berichtgeving van regionale zender Rijnmond.

Enorm zeiljacht

"De gemeente Rotterdam heeft hiervoor een verzoek gekregen vanuit de maritieme sector", zegt Van Heijst. "Het schip van de regionale scheepsbouwer kan namelijk overal onderdoor omdat de bruggen die het schip moet passeren open kunnen, behalve De Hef."

Die regionale scheepsbouwer is Oceanco, schrijft Rijnmond, dat enkel superjachten bouwt van meer dan 80 meter. De driemaster voor Bezos die ze bouwen onder modelnaam Y721, wordt met 127 meter een van de grootste zeiljachten ter wereld.

De gemeente Rotterdam wil desgevraagd niet bevestigen dat het om Oceanco gaat. De scheepsbouwer zelf reageerde niet op verzoeken voor commentaar.

De hagelnieuwe Oceanco Y721

Buiten de lengte van het schip en het modelnummer is er nog maar weinig over het paradepaardje bekend, ook de precieze hoogte van de masten niet. Ter vergelijking: de Black Pearl, een superzeiljacht dat in 2018 door Oceanco werd opgeleverd, heeft masten van 70 meter hoog.

Met zulke masten zal het schip niet onder de Koningshavenbrug doorpassen, omdat die een vaarhoogte van 46,5 meter heeft. Vandaar ook het verzoek van de scheepsbouwer aan de gemeente. "We hebben daar serieus naar gekeken en de belangen goed afgewogen", stelt de woordvoerder. "Aan de ene kant het economische belang en de werkgelegenheid door de bouw van dit schip. Aan de andere kant onze zorg voor De Hef."

Geen loslippige schepenbouwer

Uiteindelijk heeft de gemeente besloten in te stemmen met het verzoek, zegt ze. "De kosten hiervoor zijn voor rekening van de scheepsbouwer." Precieze bedragen kan ze niet noemen. De scheepsbouwer zal de rekening ongetwijfeld doorsturen naar Jeff Bezos, volgens Bloomberg opdrachtgever voor de bouw. Met een geschat vermogen van zo'n 200 miljard dollar zal de Amazon-oprichter hier vermoedelijk niet echt nerveus van worden.

Overigens houdt Oceanco vooralsnog stijf de lippen op elkaar over de opdrachtgever van het superjacht-in-aanbouw. "Het is ons beleid om nooit iets te zeggen over onze klanten vanwege hun privacy", zei een woordvoerder eerder al tegen RTL Z.

De Hef is een Rijksmonument en werd in 2014 ook al eens gedemonteerd om gerenoveerd te worden. Dat kostte de gemeente toen zo'n 7,8 miljoen euro, maar daarvoor werd het hele middengedeelte ook geverfd.

Bij die renovatie zegde de gemeente nog toe dat het de laatste keer zou zijn dat de brug uit elkaar ging. Het bericht dat dit alsnog een keer staat te gebeuren, zorgt dan ook voor gemengde reacties op Twitter.

Week of twee

Hoe lang het precies duurt om de brug zo ver te demonteren dat het superjacht erdoor kan, is nog onduidelijk. "Op dit moment wordt het plan verder uitgewerkt en wordt er een planning gemaakt", zegt de woordvoerder.

Superjacht van Bezos ligt in Rotterdam, Hef niet uit elkaar gehaald

Het superjacht van Amazon-oprichter Jeff Bezos is aangekomen in Rotterdam, zonder dat de iconische brug De Hef uit elkaar is gehaald. Het prestigieuze jacht ligt bij Greenport in de Eemhaven.

Het transport is uitgevoerd door de Koninklijke van der Wees Groep. Het bedrijf uit Dordrecht bevestigt dat het transport heeft plaatsgevonden, maar wil daar verder niks over kwijt. Het megajacht is grotendeels gebouwd bij Oceanco in Alblasserdam, ‘s werelds beroemdste luxejachtenbouwer. De basis van het jacht is vanaf daar getransporteerd naar de nieuwe locatie. Daar worden dan de masten gemonteerd. Van de Eemhaven kun je in één keer doorvaren naar de Noordzee, zonder gehinderd te worden door bruggen.

Oceanco kon niet zeggen waarom het transport toch zonder ontmanteling van De Hef heeft plaatsgevonden. ,,Wij doen geen uitspraken over de projecten vanwege de vertrouwelijkheid’’, aldus een woordvoerder. 

Het nieuws dat de Hef ontmanteld moest worden omdat de masten van het megajacht niet onder het op 45 meter hoogte hangende middenstuk pasten, zorgde afgelopen februari voor ophef onder Rotterdammers. Een petitie  om de ontmanteling tegen te gaan werd duizenden keren ondertekend en er werd een Facebookevenement opgezet om eieren naar het luxe zeiljacht te gooien . Zover is het dus niet gekomen. Het jacht heeft, zonder de hoge masten, een andere route genomen. 

Eind juni schreef wethouder Vincent Karremans al aan de Rotterdamse commissie dat het middenstuk er op korte termijn niet uit zou gaan . De wethouder vertelde dat Oceanco hem via een brief had geïnformeerd dat zij ‘vooralsnog geen omgevingsvergunning zullen aanvragen voor de uitname van het val’.

A historic steel bridge in the Dutch port city of Rotterdam is to be partly dismantled to allow a superyacht built for Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to pass, local authorities have announced.

Bezos’s gigantic, 430-million-euro ($485m) yacht is too big for the iconic Koningshaven Bridge, which dates from 1878 and was rebuilt after being bombed by the Nazis in 1940 during the second world war.

The shipyard building the three-masted mammoth in Alblasserdam, near Rotterdam, has asked the local council to remove the bridge’s central section so it can pass through.

“It’s the only route to the sea,” a spokesperson for the mayor of Rotterdam told AFP, adding that the Amazon owner would foot the bill for the operation.

The decision has angered some in the Netherlands as the local council promised after a major renovation in 2017 that it would never again dismantle the bridge, known to Rotterdammers as De Hef.

The mayor’s office emphasised the economic benefits and jobs created by the construction of the boat, but promised that the bridge would be rebuilt in its current form.

The middle section of the huge steel-girdered bridge will be removed to give enough clearance for the 40-metre (130-foot) high boat, Dutch media reported.

The process will take a few weeks and is expected to happen this summer.

Bezos, 57, is one of the world’s richest men after transforming online bookseller Amazon into a global shopping giant.

Rotterdam weigert oude brug te slopen om superjacht Jeff Bezos door te laten: “Kom je mee eieren gooien?”

Jeff Bezos mag niet met zijn nieuwe 120 meter lange superjacht door de wateren van Rotterdam varen. Er ontstond maanden geleden oproer toen de stad overwoog een deel van een 95 jaar oude brug te slopen om het jacht van de Amazon-oprichter doorgang te verlenen. Maar nu heeft de bouwer van de boot, het Nederlandse bedrijf Oceanco, besloten geen vergunning aan te vragen, aldus een lid van de Rotterdamse gemeenteraad.

Het was onduidelijk hoe het jacht van miljardair Bezos Nederland zou verlaten en of Oceanco de bouw van de boot zou voltooien. Het bedrijf wilde donderdag geen commentaar geven. Ook een woordvoerster van Amazon  weigerde een reactie te geven.

Het jacht zou in de zomer door de Koningshavenbrug varen, plaatselijk bekend als “De Hef”, en was volgens het magazine ‘Boat International’ op weg om het grootste zeiljacht ter wereld te worden met een lengte van 121 meter. Maar de brug heeft niet genoeg doorvaarthoogte voor het jacht, dat in een nabijgelegen stad werd gebouwd en daar moest passeren.

Er ontstond maanden geleden oproer toen de stad overwoog een deel van de 95 jaar oude brug te slopen om het jacht van de Amazon-oprichter doorgang te verlenen:

Een dag werk

Omdat Oceanco geen aanvraag meer wil indienen, wordt het middendeel van de brug voorlopig niet verwijderd, zo blijkt uit een openbare brief van het raadslid Vincent Karremans. De demontage duurt ongeveer een dag, net als het weer in elkaar zetten, aldus Peter van Druten, woordvoerder van de gemeente Rotterdam.

De Hef werd in 1927 geopend en was de eerste verticale hefbrug in Nederland, maar is niet meer in gebruik. Hij is al eerder gedemonteerd - voor het laatst in 2017 voor een renovatie, zei Van Druten. De brug is “een icoon voor de stad”, zei hij. De volledige kosten van de ontmanteling zouden zijn gedekt door Oceanco, zei de stad, en de brug zou daarna onmiddellijk worden gerestaureerd.

Stadsambtenaren vertelden verslaggevers in februari dat Rotterdam had ingestemd met een korte ontmanteling van de brug om het jacht van de heer Bezos doorgang te verlenen. Maar na een storm van protest kwamen ze terug op die verklaring en zeiden ze dat er nog geen besluit was genomen.

Eieren gooien

Een Facebook-evenement nodigde enkele maanden geleden inwoners van de stad uit om eieren naar de boot te gooien. “De Hef ontmantelen voor het nieuwste speeltje van Jeff Bezos? Kom eieren gooien!”, schreef de organisator van het evenement in februari.

Vorige maand meldde de krant trouw vervolgens dat Oceanco had besloten de vergunning niet aan te vragen uit angst voor vandalisme en bedreigingen. “Dat is zorgwekkend. De scheepsbouwer doet gewoon zijn werk,” zei Dieke van Groningen, een Rotterdams raadslid voor de VVD.

De reacties waren tot nu toe gemengd. Sommige mensen juichten het toe dat de stad niet hoeft te buigen voor de wil van Bezos. Rotterdam is de grootste haven van Europa en een belangrijke draaischijf voor scheepsbouw, waaronder superjachten. “Dit is Nederland op zijn best”, jammerde van Groningen. “Het gaat om het imago van de haven, en daar mag je trots op zijn.”

Rotterdam May Dismantle Part of Bridge for Jeff Bezos’ Superyacht

The Dutch city of Rotterdam walked back earlier comments that the historic Koningshaven Bridge would be briefly dismantled. On Thursday, officials said a decision had not yet been made.

The Dutch city of Rotterdam on Thursday walked back plans to dismantle part of the historic Koningshaven Bridge so that a superyacht built for Amazon’s founder, Jeff Bezos, could pass through the city’s river, saying that a decision had not yet been made.

This week, city officials had told the news media that Rotterdam had agreed to briefly dismantle the middle section of the 95-year-old bridge for the yacht’s passage this summer.

But on Thursday evening, officials said in another statement that the city had not yet approved the plan, though it had received a request from the shipbuilder to temporarily lift the middle part of bridge.

The city’s statement said the full cost of the dismantling, if approved, would be covered by the shipbuilder. The bridge, known locally as “De Hef,” would be restored immediately afterward.

A city spokeswoman had said that she did not have an estimate of how much the deconstruction would cost. The city statement said that officials would assess the environmental and economic effects of the plans.

A representative for Amazon did not respond to requests for comment about the cost or the yacht’s destination. A spokeswoman for Oceanco, the Dutch custom yacht company that is building the boat, said in an email that she could not comment on projects under construction or clients because of confidentiality reasons.

The city of Rotterdam’s decision to remove part of the bridge was reported on Wednesday by a regional Dutch public broadcaster, Rijnmond . Boat International, which publishes articles about the superyacht industry, reported that the 417-foot sailboat is set to become the largest sailing yacht in the world when it is finished later this year, surpassing the Sea Cloud , a 360-foot sailboat built in 1931 and owned by the Yacht Portfolio, an investment company based in Malta.

The superyacht Mr. Bezos commissioned is likely to cost more than $500 million to build, Bloomberg reported . Mr. Bezos is the world’s second-richest person , after Tesla’s chief executive, Elon Musk.

The bridge, which has a boat clearance of 130 feet, is not currently in use. A Rotterdam tour guide, Eddy le Couvreur, said that the bridge, designed by the Dutch architect Pieter Joosting and a fixture in the Rotterdam skyline, was once used for railway traffic. A vertical lift bridge, it was the first of its kind in the Netherlands, and was copied from similar bridges in the United States. The modern industrial aesthetics of the bridge inspired a short film in 1928, he said.

Until now, tall ships passed under the bridge before assembling their masts and taller structures, he said.

Dennis Tak, a Labor Party city councilor for Rotterdam, said he was fine with the bridge being dismantled — since the city would not be paying for it — because of the jobs the process would create. “As a city, this is a great way to take some of his money,” Mr. Tak said.

The structure is more than a bridge to the people of Rotterdam, said Siebe Thissen, the author of the book “The Boy Who Jumped From the Bridge,” about a working-class man who jumped from the bridge in 1933. “It’s a monument,” he said. “It’s the identity of Rotterdam.”

When city officials tried to take the bridge down in the 1990s since it was no longer in use, there were major protests, he said, calling the bridge a reminder of “the old days” in Rotterdam.

“I think that’s why there is so much turmoil about Jeff Bezos and his boat,” he said, before referring to accusations against Amazon . “People say, ‘Why this guy?’ It’s a working-class town, and they all know that Jeff Bezos, of course, he exploits his workers, so people say, ‘Why should this guy be able to demolish the bridge for his boat?’”

As of Thursday, more than 600 Facebook users said they would attend an event, titled “Throwing eggs at superyacht Jeff Bezos,” where they plan to gather by the bridge to throw eggs at the boat. “Rotterdammers are proud of their city and don’t tear down iconic buildings just because you are super rich,” said Pablo Strörmann, the event organizer, who said he started the Facebook group “mostly” as a joke.

Mr. le Couvreur, who works for the company Tours by Locals, which connects tourists with local guides, said that Rotterdammers would likely enjoy the international attention that the spectacle had brought, he said. “On the other hand, it shows the unimaginable wealth that people like Bezos have created for themselves, that nothing can stand in the way for them living out their dreams and hobbies,” he said, adding that the outlook was “worlds apart from those who will be watching the ship pass through the city.”

Jeff Bezos laat iconische hefbrug in Rotterdam ontmantelen voor doorvaart superjacht

Het gigantische zeiljacht dat Oceanco in Alblasserdam bouwt voor een van de rijkste mannen op deze aardbol past niet onder het Rijksmonument door. Oplossing: (tijdelijk) weg ermee.

Jeff Bezos, schathemeltjerijk geworden met Amazon, houdt wel van een speeltje aan zijn zijde. Ruimtevluchten, privéjetje, garages vol supercars, luxueuze villa's op tal van mooie locaties. Ja, daar hoort uiteraard een bootje bij. En wát voor een.

Rijksmonument in de weg

Wie op de Hollandse rivierenkaart koekeloert, ziet dat tussen werf en het ruime sop nabij Hoek van Holland vier bruggen in de weg liggen. Voor drie daarvan is zo'n jacht geen probleem. Daarvan klapt het wegdek open met een druk op de knop. Maar bij eentje, de Koningshavenbrug oftewel De Hef, passen die drie joekels van masten niet onder het hefdeel door dat met maximaal 40 meter al een vrij ruime onderdoorvaarhoogte heeft.

De oplossing: het iconische Rijksmonument tussen de wijk Feijenoord en het Noordereiland moet wijken, weet RTV Rijnmond woensdag als eerste te berichten. Dat is opmerkelijk, aangezien de gemeente Rotterdam na een grootschalige renovatie in de periode 2014-2017 plechtig beloofde dat Rotterdammers hun zo geliefde stuk staal waarover decennialang dagelijks treinen denderden nooit meer hoefden te missen.

Bon voor Bezos

Maar ja, met voldoende poen is alles, ja alles, te koop. Omdat Oceanco te bedonderd is om het jacht ergens anders af te bouwen, stapte de bouwer naar de gemeente. De ambtenaren stemden in met het verzoek het brugdeel er wederom tijdelijk uit te takelen. Als belangrijkste reden klinkt er vanaf de Coolsingel wat gepruttel over de werkgelegenheid die de bouw van dit schip creëert. Rotterdam als maritieme hoofdstad van Europa enzo. Dat ben je dus kennelijk niet zomaar. Kleine pleister op de wonde is dat niet de belastingbetaler maar Oceanco, en dus opdrachtgever Jeff Bezos, opdraait voor de kosten. Hoeveel dat zo'n beetje is? De gemeente betaalde in 2014 voor alleen het uithalen een tonnetje of drie, wist Quote te achterhalen.

Al met al een mega-operatie, destijds geklaard door een reus van een drijvende kraan van Bonn & Mees. Het hefdeel meet 55 meter lang, 9 meter breed en weegt vele, vele tonnen (560 om precies te zijn). De doorvaart vindt hoogstwaarschijnlijk ergens deze zomer plaats, laat een gemeentewoordvoerder ons weten. In de hoop dat het brugdeel slechts een paar dagen van z'n plek is.

Volksrebellie

Op het stadhuis kunnen ze er vast rekening mee houden dat zulke verzoeken in de toekomst vaker op de mat ploffen. Immers, de speeltjes der rijken worden alsmaar groter. Gelukkig keert de brug weer terug. Speel met het idee die permanent te slopen, en in de Maasstad breekt een spontane volksrebellie uit.

Rotterdamse brug tóch niet ontmanteld na bedreigingen tegen bouwer van superjacht Jeff Bezos

De monumentale brug de Hef in Rotterdam gaat voorlopig niet uit elkaar voor het superjacht van multimiljardair Jeff Bezos. De scheepsbouwer voelt zich bedreigd en vreest voor vandalisme. 

Het bericht over een monumentale brug in Rotterdam die moet wijken voor het superjacht van multimiljardair Jeff Bezos ging begin dit jaar de wereld over. De ontmanteling van een monument voor het speeltje van een van de rijksten der aarde leverde een storm van kritiek op. De Nederlandse scheepsbouwer heeft de gemeente Rotterdam nu laten weten voorlopig af te zien van de plannen.

De ophef ontstond in februari, nadat de regionale zender RTV Rijnmond berichtte over plannen van scheepswerf Oceanco, om de Hef, zoals de brug heet, te ontmantelen. Dat is nodig, omdat het nieuwe zeiljacht van de Amerikaanse Amazon-oprichter te hoog is om vanuit de scheepswerf in Alblasserdam onder de brug door te varen. De driemaster van 127 meter lang inclusief helikopterplatform is het grootste zeiljacht ooit in Nederland gebouwd.

Veiligheid bedrijf in geding

Oceanco is zich rot geschrokken van de maatschappelijke onrust. Als gevolg van de berichtgeving voelen medewerkers van de scheepswerf zich bedreigd en vreest het bedrijf voor vandalisme. Dat blijkt uit een beroep dat Trouw deed op de Wet openbaarheid van bestuur om documenten over de ontmanteling boven water te krijgen. De gemeente Rotterdam noemt de bedreigingen en de vrees voor vandalisme als een argument om een deel van de stukken niet openbaar te maken. 

Eerder dreigden duizenden Rotterdammers met het gooien van eieren naar het superjacht van Bezos tijdens een eventuele doorvaart. Hoe het schip nu wordt afgeleverd bij Bezos is onbekend. Het bedrijf kan ervoor kiezen om het schip dichter bij zee af te bouwen. Oceanco weigert in te gaan op vragen over de kwestie.

Jarenlange lobby voor ontmanteling

Kort na de berichtgeving zei de Rotterdamse burgemeester Ahmed Aboutaleb tijdens een dienstreis in Colombia dat hij de opwinding ‘nogal bijzonder’ vond. Er was nog helemaal geen vergunningsaanvraag ingediend of een besluit genomen. Wel werd al jaren op ambtelijk en politiek niveau gesproken over ontmanteling van de monumentale brug voor superjachten. 

Scheepswerf Oceanco en hun branchevereniging lobbyen al lange tijd om de hinderlijke onderbreking van de doorvaart te omzeilen, blijkt uit de vrijgegeven stukken. In december 2017 was er al politieke steun van de drie verantwoordelijke wethouders voor ontmanteling van De Hef, onder meer vanwege het belang voor de werkgelegenheid. De kosten en risico’s moesten voor rekening komen van de scheepswerf. De scheepsbouwer zette de plannen destijds niet door.

Inmiddels is er een overeenkomst opgesteld met scheepswerven in de regio Rotterdam. Het is de bedoeling dat mocht De Hef ontmanteld worden, deze er twee keer per jaar uitgaat voor maximaal drie weken. Eerst moet er een vergunning worden aangevraagd.

A massive steel bridge in Rotterdam is to be partly demolished so that the pleasure yacht being built for Amazon founder Jeff Bezos can sail through it to the sea, local broadcaster Rijnmond said on Wednesday.

The Koningshavenbrug, known to Rotterdammers as De Hef, was renovated in 2017 and the council pledged at the time it would never be dismantled again. But that promise is now set to be broken, Rijnmond said, to let Bezos’ yacht through.

The bridge, placed over the river in 1927, has had a central role in city’s history and was heavily damaged during the bombardment of Rotterdam in May 1940. The bridge is now officially protected.

Bezos’ three-masted yacht is being built by the Oceano shipyard in Alblasserdam but is too big to pass under the bridge when the central section is raised to its full height. Now Oceano and Bezos have approached the council about temporarily dismantling the bridge at their cost.

According to Rijnmond, city officials are prepared to take that step, despite the opposition of local history experts and others.

‘Jobs are important, but there are limits with what you can and should do with our industrial heritage,’ said Ton Wesselink of the local history society Historisch Genootschap Roterodamum.

Project leader Marcel Walravens said the decision is a pragmatic one. ‘It is about a ship with high masts which cannot pass through the bridge. The only alternative is to take out the middle section,’ he said.

Walravens hopes that with proper preparation, the middle section of the bridge will be removed for just one day.

At 127 metres long, Bezos’ yacht is set to be the largest sailing yacht in the world when delivered at some point this year, according to Boat International .

Mayor denies Dutch city will dismantle historic bridge for Jeff Bezos' yacht

A Dutch city has not agreed to temporarily disassemble a bridge built in 1927 to make room for Amazon founder Jeff Bezos ' mega-yacht, CBS MoneyWatch has learned.

A spokesperson for the mayor — and the city — on Friday told CBS MoneyWatch that Dutch press reports that Rotterdam would disassemble an historic bridge to make room for Bezos' boat were false, and that it has not received, or approved any such request. 

If Bezos or custom yacht-builder Oceanco asks for an accommodation, the city will consider it.

"The company that built the ship didn't yet ask for a permit so there is not an issue at this moment. When they ask for the permit, then we have to make a decision if we allow it or not, and how, and things like that," the spokesperson told CBS MoneyWatch.

Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb also denied earlier press reports, telling Dutch paper Algemeen Dagblad that "No decision has been made yet," noting that neither Bezos nor his yacht's maker have applied for a permit to take down part of the bridge. 

The Amazon founder's $500 million boat, built by Netherlands-based Oceanco and scheduled to be completed soon, measures 417 feet long and must pass through Rotterdam, under its landmark bridge, to reach its owner, NL Times reported . The problem? The Koninginnebrug bridge, a steel bridge nicknamed De Hef, isn't tall enough to accommodate the ship's three masts, which exceed the 130 feet of clearance the bridge offers.   

Dutch press reports said that the city would remove the central section of the bridge to make way for the yacht, the largest ever built in the Netherlands. 

At this point in time, city officials in Rotterdam, who have been in contact with Oceanco regarding the construction of the superyacht, only know that "there is a big ship that has to go through the ocean some day," a spokesperson told CBS MoneyWatch, adding that they anticipate receiving a request to make room for the boat to pass under the bridge. 

The spokesperson noted that the city has in the past had to deconstruct parts of the bridge to accommodate large vessels. 

"This is not the first time we have to do something about this bridge so that a big ship can go through. Once every few years a big ship has to go through to the other side," the spokesperson said. "So it's not unusual, in a way."

Rotterdam officials were said to have yielded to the billionaire, the world's  second-richest person , given the significance of the project to the local economy. Rotterdam council project leader Marcel Walravens called the construction of the superyacht "a very important project" economically, according to local broadcaster Rijnmond . Dismantling the bridge was the "only alternative," he said. 

Oceanco had agreed to pay for the cost of dismantling operation, Rotterdam spokesperson Frances Van Heijst told the NL Times. It's unclear if Bezos, who is worth roughly $176 billion , would pay for any of the disassembly cost.

The shipbuilder did not respond to a request for comment from CBS MoneyWatch. 

Aboutaleb, the mayor, said the controversial undertaking remains under consideration, but that Bezos still lacks the official approval to move forward. He also said Bezos' wealth and status will not influence his decision. 

"That has absolutely nothing do with this decision. It's about the facts. I want to know them first," Aboutaleb told the Dutch language newspaper.

"It's not an issue of what is going through the bridge," the city spokesperson reiterated. "It's not like if it's a ship for Mr. Bezos all of a sudden the rules are changing. But if there is a call for a permit, we will make a decision based on facts and not emotions. But we are not at that stage at this moment," the spokesperson said.

Some locals oppose altering the bridge on behalf of one of the richest people on the planet. Protesters have organized an event on Facebook at which they vowed to gather to throw eggs at Bezos' yacht when it passes under the bridge, scheduled for June. 

"Rotterdam was built from the rubble by the people of Rotterdam, and we don't just take that apart for the phallic symbol of a megalomaniac billionaire. Not without a fight!!" event organizers wrote on Facebook.

Het superjacht van Amazon-oprichter Jeff Bezos, Project Y721, is aangekomen in de haven van Rotterdam. Doordat het schip zonder masten voer en een andere route koos, hoefde De Hef niet ontmanteld te worden, meldt de maritieme nieuwssite Schuttevaer dinsdag. Eerder dit jaar leek het er op dat De Hef gedemonteerd moest worden. Daarmee moest het mogelijk worden voor het schip van Bezos, met 127 meter lengte het grootste superjacht ooit gebouwd, om via de Rotterdamse haven naar zee te varen.

De drie masten van het schip, door scheeps-en jachtbouwer Oceanco gebouwd in het Zuid-Hollandse Alblasserdam, worden door kenners geschat op zo’n honderd meter hoog. Onder De Hef, officieel de Koningshavenbrug, doorvaren is voor Project Y721 kansloos. De brug heeft een doorvaarhoogte van zo’n veertig meter. Het middenstuk van De Hef zou met een drijvende bok met een hefvermogen van 1.800 ton gehesen moeten worden.

De verontwaardiging over het nieuws was groot. Als het schip in de zomer langs zou varen, moesten Rotterdammers het bekogelen „met rotte eieren”, zo luidde een oproep op Facebook. De Hef is een rijksmonument - daar mag je volgens sommige Rotterdammers niet aankomen. De gemeente Rotterdam had bovendien bij de heropening van de voormalige spoorhefbrug in 2017 beloofd dat deze niet meer ontmanteld zou worden.

Geen vergunning

Het is lange tijd onduidelijk gebleven of de gemeente de brug toch zou laten demonteren. In februari, toen de ophef ontstond, bevestigde de gemeente aan NRC dat toestemming was gegeven voor de doorvaart van het superjacht, waarna de Rotterdamse burgemeester Ahmed Aboutaleb zei dat hierover nog geen definitief besluit was genomen. Nadat het enige tijd stil bleef rondom deze kwestie, bleek eind juni dat scheeps- en jachtbouwer Oceanco nog steeds geen vergunning had aangevraagd .

Rotterdam to dismantle part of historic bridge so Jeff Bezos’s massive yacht can pass through

Rotterdam has agreed to temporarily dismantle part of its historic Koningshaven Bridge so that Jeff Bezos’s 417-foot-long , three-mast yacht can pass through the waterway sometime this summer, according to a spokeswoman for the city.

The Dutch company Oceano has been building the massive vessel for an estimated $500 million in the nearby city of Alblasserdam. Once completed this year, the ship, known as Y721, will be the world’s largest sailing yacht, according to Boat International .

But to reach the open seas it must first pass through Rotterdam — considered the maritime capital of Europe — and the city’s historic steel bridge, locally known as De Hef, which has a clearance of just over 131 feet.

How did a ship get stuck in the Suez Canal, and what happened afterward?

Originally built in 1927, De Hef was a railway bridge and the first of its kind in Western Europe, with a central span that could be lifted to allow ship traffic to pass underneath. It was decommissioned in 1994 after being replaced by a tunnel, but later declared a national monument. The bridge underwent a major restoration from 2014 to 2017, after which the city said it would not be dismantled again, according to the Dutch broadcaster Rijnmond , which first reported on the yacht agreement.

Although the exact plans, timetable and costs have not been set, Oceano and Bezos will pay to dismantle the bridge, Rijnmond reported.

Frances van Heijst, the Rotterdam municipality spokeswoman, confirmed by phone that the city would not be footing the bill. She said the shipbuilder bears the cost of hiring a company to carry out the bridge’s deconstruction and reassembly, but that she could not provide an estimate or breakdown of the cost as “a lot of details need to be worked out.”

Representatives for Bezos and Oceano did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Bezos, estimated to be one of the world’s richest people, owns The Washington Post. Last year, he stepped down as chief executive of Amazon, the online retail giant he founded.

Van Heijst said by email that the city agreed to remove the middle part of the bridge after receiving the request and weighing the economic costs and benefits.

“On the one hand, [there is] the economic importance / employment due to the construction of this ship,” she said. “On the other hand, our concern for De Hef.”

Were permission to dismantle the bridge not provided, Oceano would likely have to sail a half-finished yacht under De Hef and then complete construction elsewhere.

“From an economic perspective, we attach great importance to preserving employment,” van Heijst said.

Marcel Walravens, a municipality official working on De Hef related issues, told Rijnmond that he considered the removal of the middle part “maintenance” as afterward the bridge would be restored to its original form.

Others are more concerned.

“Jobs are important, but there are limits with what you can and should do with our industrial heritage,” Ton Wesselink, the head of a local history society, Historisch Genootschap Roterodamum, told the website Dutch News .

Rotterdam Now Won't Dismantle a Historic Bridge for Jeff Bezos's Superyacht

The Amazon founder's new sailing yacht is too tall to pass under the historic Koningshaven bridge.

"We’re happy it’s not happening," Marvin Biljoen, a councilman for GroenLinks, the Dutch Green Party, told the New York Times . "T he bridge is a national monument, which shouldn’t be altered too much. That you could still do that with money anyway bothers us."

Last week, Oceano quietly towed the yacht up the river in the early hours of the morning to a different shipyard, and now, Bezos's boat is nearly completed. The YouTube channel Dutch Yachting shared a video of the boat, and it has three large masts completed:

Original 2/7/22 : The European port of Rotterdam will dismantle part of its iconic Koningshaven bridge for Jeff Bezos. The billionaire's new yacht is being built in Alblasserdam, in the western Netherlands, and will be too tall to pass under the bridge.

"It's the only route to the sea," a spokesperson for the mayor of Rotterdam told AFP , confirming the news of the bridge's dismantling. According to Dutch news , ship builder Oceanco convinced the city to dismantle part of the bridge. The Rotterdam mayor's spokesperson also confirmed that Bezos would pay for the dismantling and rebuilding of the bridge.

In November, Oceano's chairman, Omani businessman Dr. Mohammed Al Barwani, spoke of the 127 meter (416 feet) sailing yacht the company was working on without mentioning Bezos. Later, Boat International identified the 127m yacht as the one commissioned by the Amazon founder.

The Koningshaven bridge, known locally as the De Hef bridge , was built in 1877. During World War II, the bridge was significantly damaged and rebuilt, subsequently recognized as a historic monument. Between 2014 and 2017, the bridge underwent a restoration, and officials promised it would not be dismantled again.

"From an economic perspective and maintaining employment, the municipality considers this a very important project," Marcel Walravens, the leader of the proposed dismantling project, told Dutch broadcaster Rijnmond . "Rotterdam has also been declared the maritime capital of Europe. Shipbuilding and activity within that sector are therefore an important pillar for the municipality." Walravens says the project will likely take place sometime this summer.

Dennis Tak, a Labor Party city councilor, said he was OK with the dismantling of the Koningshaven bridge because Bezos is paying for it, and it would create jobs. "As a city, this is a great way to take some of his money," Tak told the New York Times .

Dutch residents are not happy, however; they plan to throw rotten eggs at Jeff Bezos's superyacht as it passes through the Rotterdam harbor. Business Insider reports Rotterdam locals are planning an event called "Throwing eggs at Jeff Bezos' superyacht" in protest.

"Calling all Rotterdammers, take a box of rotten eggs with you and let's throw them en masse at Jeff's superyacht when it sails through the Hef in Rotterdam," the event description reads on Facebook. "Rotterdam was built from the rubble by the people of Rotterdam, and we don't just take that apart for the phallic symbol of a megalomaniac billionaire. Not without a fight!" 3,300 people have RSVP'd as going, and 11,600 are interested in the event.

When Bezos's yacht, known as Y721, is delivered later this year—after the bridge is dismantled—the boat will become the world's largest sailing yacht, a title that has been held for nearly a century by American socialite Marjorie Merriweather Post's 1931 boat Sea Cloud .

Along with making history as the largest sailing yacht, Bezos's Y271 is the longest yacht to have ever been built in the Netherlands, and Oceano's largest ever superyacht. It is also rumored to come with a "support yacht," also called a shadow vessel. The superyacht likely cost more than $500 million to build, per Bloomberg .

Bezos is also reportedly the owner of the Flying Fox, a $400 million megayacht.

It’s just nuts: Jeff Bezos is dismantling a Rotterdam bridge for his yacht

Billionaires: they walk around thinking they own the place. Or, in this case, it’s Jeff Bezos trying to make way for his superyacht . How? He’s getting the De Hef bridge taken apart . 🙄

Amazon CEO, and self-appointed space cowboy , Jeff Bezos commissioned yacht building company Oceanco in Alblasserdam, South Holland for a mid-life crisis yacht with a hefty €430 million price tag.

You would think the logistics would be well-thought-out with so much money on the line. But apparently, the landmark Koningshaven bridge in Rotterdam (aka De Hef) is now standing in the way of taking this boat on a spin, reports the NOS .

Bezos’ solution? Throw money at it till it disappears. 🚿

A national monument

Oceanco and Bezos asked the municipality of Rotterdam , the maritime capital of Europe, to temporarily dismantle the 1878 monument so that the megaship can pass. 😶

Rotterdammers feel very strongly about the De Hef. In the early 90s, they resisted demolition plans after the bridge lost its function as a train passage. From 2014 to 2017, the bridge underwent a complete restoration and is now generally considered a national monument.

To make it completely clear: asking to take the De Hef bridge apart for your superyacht is a bit like asking if it would be possible to take down the Eiffel Tower because it’s in the way of your private jet or something. Rude!

Where’s your logic? I can’t see it!

Worst of all, Rotterdam’s municipality seems to be game, according to Rijnmond . “Employment is important, but there are limits to what you can and may do with our heritage,” comments Ton Wesselink of the Historical Society Roterodamum.

Municipality liaison and De Hef project leader Marcel Walravens explains that “De Hef has a maximum height. The only alternative is to take out the middle part.”

So, will Bezos actually get his well and have the bridge taken apart? The possibility is present, as “from an economic perspective and the perspective of maintaining employment, the municipality considers this a very important project,” says Walravens.

People ain’t happy, Bezos

As expected, people made room for their anger, surprise, and disbelieve over this foolishness on Twitter:

Take his ‘boat’ apart.

I’m a little puzzled regarding the Bezos yacht/bridge controversy. I would assume that the architects and Oceanco (not the first yacht they built) were aware of the construction limitations. Common sense dictates that when you built something e.g. house, ship, bridge, rocket etc., you take all the parameters into consideration. In this instance one would consider the length, the depth and very important, the height of the masts. Obviously, something was overlooked! In that case we’re talking about stupidity. On the other hand, did they inform the city of Rotterdam that the bridge would be a problem? Could it be that Mr. Bezos believes that the sky is the limit and obstacles can be overcome with money? In which case we’re talking about capitalist arrogance.

Don’t worry too much about this poorly researched ‘news’ article. Little investigation and much speculation is a strategy to gain attention, not to report on happenings around us. The constraint was indeed known from day one. The constraint has been known for this shipbuilder since it became one in the 00’s. The bridge was re-designed (back to its original design) and rebuilt in the ’00s. The bridge was destroyed in WW2 and a swing bridge had been used for the following 60 years which is why the shipbuilder was able to be a viable business for this size ship. The new (old design) bridge was designed to be able to be partially disassembled specifically for these reasons to allow the shipbuilder to not lose business. This is not the first and will not be the last time it accommodates the shipbuilder.

Too much money corrupts people. Mega-money corrupts governments.

Come on… The flip side of the coin, besides that he is paying for all costs, the boat was built in The Netherlands generating jobs and taxes. How can people complaint about it??? Dutch people don’t realize the good life they have….
