IPS engines, fitted on some Fountaine Pajot motor catamarans are designed to offer greater energy efficiency, which translates into better fuel economy compared to other systems of propulsion. The overall design of IPS engines aims to optimise a boat’s performance in terms of speed , manoeuvrability and fuel economy. And of course, IPS engines offer excellent manoeuvrability thanks to steerable propellors, thus facilitating manœuvres in tight spaces like harbours.

Spacious and comfortable when sailing, Fountaine Pajot motor yachts also offer fine cruising speed. Depending on the model and the engine installed on board, they can reach a max speed of 24 knots and 18 knots in fast cruising mode.

Power catamarans are naturally more efficient than monohull power boats . Depending on the model and the engine installed on board, at a high cruising speed, i.e. around 18 knots, motor yachts in the Fountaine Pajot range can reach between 260 and 425 nautical miles. At an “economical” cruising speed, they can reach up to 1000 nautical miles. The Power 67, the Flagship model in the range, can reach up to 4000 nautical miles at economy cruise speed. Thanks to its architecture with two floats and a central suspended platform, its mass is divided by two and better spread. Thinner hulls decrease the Archimedes thrust and require much less energy to move the keel through the water. Half the consumption of a monocoque is the result, increasing the range of motor catamarans for long crossings and long stays at anchor. For the same length, a catamaran gives much more living surface . The great width permits much more spacious cockpit space as well as a huge interior-exterior living space on one level,

Engine Toyota 4S

motorboat 4s

The Toyota 4S engine is the youngest in the S-series line, the other two are the 2.0L 3S and the 2.2L 5S. The motor replaced the old 1.8l 1S and is an absolutely exact copy of the 3S motor, the difference lies in the reduced cylinder diameter (from 86 mm to 82.5 mm), intake and exhaust manifolds.

  • 4S-Fi is the first single-injection variant with a compression ratio of 9.3 and an engine power of 105 hp. Such models were produced until 1991;
  • 4S-FE Gen 1 – an updated model produced with distributor injection, with more power of 115 hp. They were produced from 1989 to 1999.
  • 4S-FE Gen 2 – introduced since 1995 and features increased power of 125 hp and a compression ratio of 9.5.

The 4S-FE engine has the following design features:

  • four cylinders are machined in the cast iron body of the block, the surface is hardened by honing, the arrangement is in-line;
  • the cooling jacket is made inside the block when it is cast;
  • it is recommended to use 5W30 and 10W30 viscosity engine oil;
  • distribution of the fuel mixture by two DOHC camshafts;
  • presence of MPFi system for multi-point injection;
  • DIS-2 ignition system without spark distribution;
The S family includes engines: 4S‑Fi, 4S‑FE, 3S‑FC , 3S‑FE , 3S‑FSE , 3S‑GE , 3S‑GTE , 5S‑FE .

The 4S-Fi engine was installed on:

  • Toyota Camry 2 (V20) in 1986 – 1992;
  • Toyota Carina 5 (T170) in 1988 – 1992;
  • Toyota Corona 9 (T170) in 1987 – 1992;
  • Toyota Mark II 6 (X80) in 1988 – 1992.

The 4S-FE engine was installed on:

  • Toyota Caldina 1 (T190) in 1992 – 1995;
  • Toyota Camry V30 in 1990 – 1994; Camry V40 in 1994 – 1998;
  • Toyota Carina 5 (T170) in 1989 – 1992; Carina 6 (T190) in 1992 – 1996;
  • Toyota Corona 9 (T170) in 1989 – 1992; Corona 10 (T190) in 1992 – 1996;
  • Toyota Curren 1 (T200) in 1994 – 1998;
  • Toyota Mark II 6 (X80) in 1990 – 1995; Mark II 7 (X90) in 1992 – 1996.

Disadvantages of the Toyota 4S engine

  • The injection pump has become unusable. The breakdown is accompanied by a leak of gasoline into the crankcase and a breakdown of the connecting rod and piston group. The main signs are an increase in oil with a characteristic gasoline smell, twitching on the go, uneven work, frequent stops, speed is floating. You just need to replace the injection pump.
  • Stuck EGR valve system – exhaust gas recirculation. The reason is the formation of tar due to poor fuel. Symptoms are interruptions in speed, interruptions in the rhythm of the unit. The valve should be periodically cleaned or muted.
  • Rpm is lost, the engine stalls. Idle problems are treated by flushing the throttle valve module. You also need to clean the intake manifold. The air filter or fuel pump may have broken.
  • Gasoline burn (sometimes severe). It is necessary to adjust the ignition, clean the nozzles, idle valve and throttle valve.
  • Vibration. Malfunctions are caused by loosening of the aggregate pad or stopping of one of the cylinders.
  • Motor overheating. The radiator cap is to blame and should be replaced.

With proper care, the 4S is a fully functional and even high-spirited unit. The resource easily exceeds 300 thousand km.

Powered by the BLX120 brushless system, the KRATON™ 4X4 4S BLX is unstoppable on trails, race tracks, and muddy courses. Its 2400Kv brushless motor is matched to an ESC with dual EC5™ connectors for using two 2S LiPo batteries. Differential gears inside the front and rear gearboxes are made of durable metal.

To develop the chassis, ARRMA ® engineers started with the proven 4X4 3S platform. They stretched the track width by widening the suspension and drive shafts, and added a center brace along the length of the chassis for maximum durability (it can be removed in just four quick steps when it's time to perform maintenance). The molded 16mm Big Bore shocks include top-loading springs and molded-in shock rod ends to prevent spring loss.

The body has the same aggressive styling as that of the KRATON™ 6S BLX, with a smaller version of its rear wing. Can You Use 4s Battery on 3s Motors

I'm building a mini quad and bought a 4s battery not knowing the motors where 3s. The esc's are rated for 4s so I go a 4s battery and relized today the motors are for 2 to 3s, will this work or should I use a 3s battery.

What motor is it? There is some discussion on RCgroups about certain higher end 3S quad motors that run fine on 4s. I would tend to believe that as long as you are not over the safe wattage levels you should be ok. Dig for 4s quad setups and I think you would find that guys are using 3s SunnySky, Cobra, and other quality motors.  

The motors are Emax MT1806 Brushless Motors, not something like a sunnysky.

I use to be hesitant to use 4S on a 3S motor, but have since said, "what the heck" and started using them. To me, as long as you keep the stator under . . .say. . 130F, I say go for it.

I don't know if I'd try the emax 1806's on 4S. There's not much metal in their base to help sink away the heat. The DYS 1806 motors as much as I'm not a fan of them have a much more substantial base that probably helps keep them considerably cooler. Though I run both on 6x4.5 props with 3S and haven't experienced heat issues (despite quite a few people saying the 1806's can't handle those props) except with the BS12 ESC's.  

Yeah, I decided to go with a 3s don't want to risk it.

I have run EMAX 1806 2280KV and DYS 1806 2300KV motors on 4S without issue on EMAX 12A ESCs. The key is to use a docile 5030 HQ prop (less amps/trust than GemFan) to offset the extra RPM and amp draw which results. With the HQ 5030 I could fly the setup as hard as I wanted and wouldn't really risk hurting anything; the extra thump of the 4S made for some great acro flying. I have flown HQ 5040 and carbon fiber 6020 props on these motors, also on 4S, but was very mindful for how long I was hard on the throttle. Since you casual/fun fly with so little throttle (between 30% and 60%), you can get away with what seems on paper like a bad idea. Getting into FPV racing where you carry long periods (> 3 minutes) of high throttle (> 85%) use is a different story.

Voltage does not kill motors, heat does. If you keep the temps to a normal level then you won't have an issue.

On my quad, which has motors only rated for 3s, I was getting improved performance on 4s batteries for 5 minutes or so, until one motor on the quad would suddenly stop and it would fall out of the sky in an ugly low-performance way. I checked the temperature on the motors and ESC, neither were particularly overheated. It's a problem I never have on 3s batteries.

I can't explain Zanderlex's issue, but I can say that motors are not limited by voltage (within reason): they are limited by temperature, and accordingly current. It is often the case that higher voltage results in more current draw and therefor higher temps because of the increased RPMs, but if you prop down accordingly and your ESCs are rated for it, then you should have zero problems flying on 4s. Heck, you will probably even see a boost in efficiency over 3s. Just experiment and check your temps to decide what works for your setup and style of flying!

One thing I think is being overlooked . . . Bearings. Yes, it's not voltage but thermal failure that cooks most coils to death, but over-speeding bearings will kill the motor just as easily, particularly when vibration is something to minimize. Is 6s on a 3s 800kv motor doable with the right prop? Maybe. All depends on the bearings . . . of which few OEMs will even hint at the lineage. Proceed with due caution.  


Rogue Drone Pilot

Like nitrous on a car's stock engine...It will be fun but even if it doesn't immediately blow up. Longevity will suffer. Especially if you are asking a lot from a brushless motor already. If it is already getting hot from running 3S I would not suggest trying 4S. It can get to a point where the insulating material burns off of the coils. When that happens it will likely burn up the ESC resulting in a spectacular crash.

I used a 4s on a 3s 2212 motor with a 4s rated esc.. after a few stress-tests, it started burning. When the fire was off, I tried to spin the motor manually, but it was really hard to spin. I think, that the higher rpm destroyed the bearing and due to the higher resistance, the amps raised, so it fried because I didn't use fuses. Btw. there was no prop attached to the motor. I put 30 amp escs on a stock versacopter build that had emax 2204 2300kv motors and romped the bejeebus out of it. The batteries came down hotter then the motors with 5x4.5x3 vs stock 6045. Still flew fine when I handed it off to Carter. Just needed a fc upgrade to catch up with the times. Skyline32 fc was a tad outdated but still ripped pretty good for as heavy as that quad was.  


I've run 3s 2212 kv900 motors on 6s. The key is to make sure you are not cooking the motors. If they start getting hot, back off on the max throttle.

    If the second one, gotta have a motor that can handle 4s too. Hobbywing 10BL120 G2 can handle 4s on the lowest kv motor. (Sensorless) Max10G2 140A can handle 4s. Castle Copperhead 10. Spektrum BLX ESCs out of the 4s kraton/outcast lineup. Most ESCs are gonna be above 50 bucks. Yea just like Mr frog said, 50 bucks, gonna be tough to find for.

    It works! I just ran my new 6s pack with no problem. I have 35a ESCs, Xing-E 2207 2750kv motors with the motor_output_limit = 63 and betaflight 4.1 defaults + RPM filter and it was smooth running. The motors came down cold and the power was significantly better than my old beat up 4s packs.
