The price of a Fountaine Pajot power catamaran varies according to the size of the model chosen and your cruising project. Our dealers are at your disposal to guide you in your choice of fittings, packages and options to best suit your boat purchase project. You can find out the starting price of the boat your choice on this page HERE .

IPS engines, fitted on some Fountaine Pajot motor catamarans are designed to offer greater energy efficiency, which translates into better fuel economy compared to other systems of propulsion. The overall design of IPS engines aims to optimise a boat’s performance in terms of speed , manoeuvrability and fuel economy. And of course, IPS engines offer excellent manoeuvrability thanks to steerable propellors, thus facilitating manœuvres in tight spaces like harbours.

Spacious and comfortable when sailing, Fountaine Pajot motor yachts also offer fine cruising speed. Depending on the model and the engine installed on board, they can reach a max speed of 24 knots and 18 knots in fast cruising mode.

Power catamarans are naturally more efficient than monohull power boats . Depending on the model and the engine installed on board, at a high cruising speed, i.e. around 18 knots, motor yachts in the Fountaine Pajot range can reach between 260 and 425 nautical miles. At an “economical” cruising speed, they can reach up to 1000 nautical miles. The Power 67, the Flagship model in the range, can reach up to 4000 nautical miles at economy cruise speed. Take a look at the boat comparator here

Thanks to its architecture with two floats and a central suspended platform, its mass is divided by two and better spread. Thinner hulls decrease the Archimedes thrust and require much less energy to move the keel through the water. Half the consumption of a monocoque is the result, increasing the range of motor catamarans for long crossings and long stays at anchor. For the same length, a catamaran gives much more living surface . The great width permits much more spacious cockpit space as well as a huge interior-exterior living space on one level,

Innovative, high-tech composite materials constitute most of the structure of our motor catamarans : hulls, flybridge, decks, bulkheads and more. Fountaine Pajot has perfected a resin injection and infusion technique, an advanced technology that gives our boats all their robustness. Thanks to this expertise, we can make our motor yachts considerably lighter while maintaining consistent quality . Injection also makes it possible to meet the most stringent environmental requirements, in line with the commitments of the Fountaine Pajot Group.

Powered by the BLX120 brushless system, the KRATON™ 4X4 4S BLX is unstoppable on trails, race tracks, and muddy courses. Its 2400Kv brushless motor is matched to an ESC with dual EC5™ connectors for using two 2S LiPo batteries. Differential gears inside the front and rear gearboxes are made of durable metal.

To develop the chassis, ARRMA ® engineers started with the proven 4X4 3S platform. They stretched the track width by widening the suspension and drive shafts, and added a center brace along the length of the chassis for maximum durability (it can be removed in just four quick steps when it's time to perform maintenance). The molded 16mm Big Bore shocks include top-loading springs and molded-in shock rod ends to prevent spring loss.

The body has the same aggressive styling as that of the KRATON™ 6S BLX, with a smaller version of its rear wing. There are also many subtle tweaks that give the KRATON™ 4X4 4S BLX a personality all its own. Large, tough wheels hubs and durable 17mm wheel hexes hold standard 3.8" wheels, outfitted with low-profile MINOKAWA LP tires.

Included with the ready-to-run package is a Spektrum™ STX2 ® 2.4GHz radio with SRX200 waterproof receiver and an ARRMA ® ADS-15M metal gear servo. Just add your choice of battery, charger, and "AA" transmitter batteries – and start unleashing ARRMA ® monster speed and performance in a whole new size.

911 Carrera T highlights.

Weight reduction..

The 911 Carrera T has a sportier design thanks to its reduced weight. Simple but effective measures were taken for these savings, like lightweight glass, the removal of the rear seat assembly and less sound insulation.

Sport Seats Plus

The upholstery of the seat cushion and backrest of the Sport Seats Plus is firmer and sportier, and they offer even better lateral support compared to standard Sport Seats. The seats are covered with smooth leather, the seat centers with Sport-Tex. The headrests bring even more highlights, available with embroidered '911' logo or optionally with an embossed Porsche Crest.

PASM Sport Suspension.

With PASM Sport Suspension (Lowered 10mm), the body is lowered by a further 10mm (0.39 inches) compared to the PASM chassis. The springs are harder and shorter, the anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles are stiffer. The spring rates have been significantly raised, making the 911 Carrera T even sportier on the road.

20/21-inch Carrera S wheels.

The 911 Carrera T stands on 20/21-inch Carrera S wheels in a 10-spoke design, painted in Titanium Gray (High Gloss). Made of lightweight alloy, of course. The wheels and tires on the rear axle are wider and larger than those at the front. While the broader contact surface optimizes performance, the larger diameter of the rear wheels increases stability and comfort.

GT Sport Steering Wheel.

The emotions of motorsport in your hands: with a thumb rest and center top marking as well as spoke trims in a unique design, the Multifunction GT Sport Steering Wheel makes clear reference to the motorsport genes of the 911.

7-speed manual transmission.

The 7-speed manual transmission with the Sport Chrono Package ensures a very close connection between driver and car, thanks to short distances with optimum connection between the individual gears. Just like the manual transmission on GTS models, the 911 Carrera T also features a shortened gear lever. The result: sporty, short gear changes for increased driving pleasure.

Sport Exhaust System.

The Sport Exhuast System brings impressive resonance and an intense sports car sound, typical of the 911. It has a central rear muffler, which emerges in black tailpipes to the left and right of the license plate on the 911 Carrera T.

Exterior design.

The exterior mirrors, rear lid grille and the "PORSCHE" logo on the doors in the accent color Agate Gray all highlight the sporty character of the car. The two variants of the rear logo also have an Agate Gray finish, with a choice of "911 Carrera T" or the very purist "911".

911 Carrera T Interior Package.

A sporty feel inside. Numerous details such as the seat belts, accent stripes on the seat centers, deviated stitching and embroidered "911" logo on the headrests are available with a choice between Slate Gray or Lizard Green as accent colors.

Car body shapes.

The Coupé version of the 911 embodies Porsche DNA in its purest form: the long, flat bonnet, the steeply inclined windscreen. And the roof line that slopes gently down towards the rear, already characterized the original 911.

The open-top variant of the 911 has always been characterised by a heightened feeling of freedom and plenty of fresh air. When closed, the Cabriolet has the elegant silhouette of the 911 Coupé models – thanks to its fully automatic fabric hood.

The most stylish 911 model has the addition ‘targa’. With its characteristic Targa bar and innovative roof concept, the 911 Targa is a timeless classic. And at the same time it is an open-top variant of the 911 with the comfort of an enclosed car.

360° Experience.

  • Powerful twin-turbo six-cylinder horizontally opposed engine in the rear
  • High-precision Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission
  • Systems for dynamics

911 Edition 50 Years Porsche Design

Discover the anniversary model in detail.

The exterior in detail.

A design that unites traditional and modern. That ensures more dynamism on the road. And causes a sensation for everyone who follows the 911.

Design DNA.

Typically 911: the long, flat hood, the steeply inclined windshield and the roof line that slopes gently down towards the rear. The fenders are more clearly shaped, the rear is powerful and clearly emphasizes the horizontal.

Light strip.

The seamless light strip with LED technology between the three-dimensional LED taillights characterizes the appearance of all 911 models. And makes them unmistakable, even at night.

An eye-catching and defining element of the 911 Targa models: the roll-over bar. It and has its own iconic character: with bar trims made of aluminum, lateral gills and the original ‘targa’ logo.

Agile and progressive: the 911 also appears particularly athletic due to the different wheel sizes at the front and rear. The up to 20/21-inch wheels offer more stability and comfort with the larger diameter on the rear axle.

Front headlights.

The shape and position of the main headlights are also reminiscent of the first 911 generations. The latest LED technology is used inside them.

The hood with its characteristic dynamic recess profiles – and its straight slope to the front fascia – is a reference to the earlier 911 models.

Door handles.

The new door handles are partially recessed into the doors and are therefore discretely integrated into the car’s image.

Only available for Carrera T models.

Information about wheels can be found here.

Tradition meets innovation: the interior.

Analog precision combined with digital integration. The 911 interior combines old strengths with new possibilities and, as a sports car, is one thing above all: strictly designed for the driver.

Timeless design.

Progressive technology., 360 degree 911: interior design., the interior in detail., sports car ergonomics..

The analog tachometer is positioned in the center of the instrument cluster and, therefore, always in the driver’s line of sight. The ascending center console ensures short distances between steering wheel and gear lever, and the intuitively placed switches and buttons. All for the unmistakable sensation of driving a 911.

Porsche Advanced Cockpit.

High-resolution displays and touch-sensitive buttons, as well as clearly structured functions and content. Thanks to the Porsche Advanced Cockpit control concept, the 911 interior has never been so focused. Typical sports car: the buttons, which have been consciously kept as analog buttons, offer direct access to essential drive and chassis functions.

Instrument cluster.

Left and right of the analog tachometer are two high-resolution 7-inch displays with essential vehicle information on four round instruments. To display purely driving-related content, a reduced view can be selected.

Porsche Communication Management (PCM).

Porsche Communication Management including online navigation is your central control center for audio, navigation and communication as well as for a variety of assistance systems. The latest generation also features a new display and operating concept.

From the gear selector to the air outlet: every surface, every detail is carefully considered and in high quality. There is virtually no end to the combination of options of available material and equipment – your personal taste is the limit.

Model variants

Transmission.

8-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK).

The 8-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) enables incredibly swift gear changes without interrupting the flow of power – in milliseconds. PDK combines a very sporty tuning in first to sixth gear with efficient overdrive ratios (seventh and eighth gear).

The 7-speed manual transmission ensures an extremely direct link between driver and car: thanks to short distances with optimum connection between the individual gears. In conjunction with the Sport Chrono Package, the dynamic throttle-blip function in active Sport or Sport Plus mode ensures an even more emotional driving experience and sensational sound.

Porsche Traction Management (PTM).

All-wheel drive Porsche Traction Management (PTM) optimally distributes drive force between the permanently driven rear axle and the front axle. For excellent drive and an incredibly harmonious handling right at the limits.

Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus).

PTV Plus is a system intended to improve driving dynamics and stability. It works with a precise application of the brakes on the rear wheels and a rear differential lock. For increased stability, outstanding traction and high agility at any speed.

Chassis systems.

More – of everything. The chassis systems optimize the vehicle features of the 911 and make it even faster, more agile and more comfortable.

Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM).

PASM is an electronic damping control system that actively and continuously controls the damping force, depending on the road conditions and driving mode, for each individual wheel. For more comfort with increased dynamics.

PASM Sport suspension.

With PASM Sport suspension, the body is lowered a further 10 mm (0.39 in.) in relation to the PASM chassis. The springs are harder and shorter, the anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles are stiffer. The spring rates have been significantly raised, giving the 911 a more neutral and balanced presence on the road.

GTS-specific PASM Sport suspension.

On the 911 GTS Coupe and Cabriolet models equipped with PASM Sport suspension, the body sits 10 mm lower than the standard PASM suspension, the springs are harder and shorter and the rear axle has so-called helper springs. These additional springs, proven in motorsport, enable significantly more sporty spring rates – without limiting the spring travel.

Porsche Stability Management (PSM).

Porsche Stability Management (PSM) is an automatic control system for helping to maintain stability at the limits of dynamic driving performance. For a high level of driving stability – and extraordinary agility at the same time. In conjunction with the Sport Chrono Package, PSM is supplemented by a Sport mode. This allows a significantly more sporty driving style, with PSM remaining active in the background.

Rear-axle steering.

Rear-axle steering enhances performance and suitability for everyday use in equal measure; by improving the handling during low-speed maneuvers and making maneuvers and turns easier. At the same time, the rear-axle steering gives significantly more driving stability during high-speed maneuvers.

Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC).

Your surroundings at a glance.

A rare luxury these days: being able to concentrate exclusively on what's directly in front of you. The open road. Or the next corner. The 911 provides you with support in the form of multiple assistance systems which allow you to remain truly in the moment.

Porsche InnoDrive incl. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Active Lane Keep (ALK).*

Regulates driving speed based on high-definition navigation data, radar, and video sensor technology in order to deliver typical Porsche driving feel, increased efficiency, and improved comfort. Driving speed is predictively adapted to speed restrictions and road topography (elevation changes, corners). At the same time, Porsche InnoDrive controls acceleration, deceleration, and gear selection (including coasting).

* The assistance provided by Porsche InnoDrive is subject to system limitations. The driver must monitor driving style at all times and intervene in cases of doubt. The system can be overridden at any time by use of the brake or accelerator pedal.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)

The system adapts the speed of your 911 depending on the distance to vehicle in front of you. If you approach another vehicle that is travelling slower than your selected cruising speed, the system slows the engine or gently applies the brakes. Even down to a halt. As soon as the road ahead clears, your 911 will accelerate back up to the cruising speed originally set.

Lane Keep Assist including traffic sign recognition.

Lane Keep Assist eases the burden on you by providing steering assistance, helping to keep the vehicle in lane. Traffic sign recognition displays speed limits, ‘no passing’ zones and indirect information, such as boundary signs, in the instrument cluster. The cornering notification displays an arrowed direction warning on the instrument cluster, alerting you to tight corners. Long before you reach them.

Night Vision Assist.

Night Vision Assist uses an infrared camera to detect pedestrians and large wildlife before they are illuminated by the headlights. A thermal image in the instrument cluster warns the driver.

Porsche Wet mode.*

With ‘Wet’ mode, the 911 uses an innovative system that aids you when driving in the wet. If the sensors in the front wheel housing detect wet roads, the system will recommend switching to ‘Wet mode’. The chassis control systems and the responsiveness of the drivetrain will then be adapted to the circumstances.

*The ‘Wet’ driving mode is not a substitute for adopting an appropriate driving manner in different road and weather conditions, and is, at the most, an aid for the driver.

Remote ParkAssist.

Remote ParkAssist combines a number of intelligent functions, such as remote parking. It makes it easier to enter and exit parallel and perpendicular parking spaces, as well as garages, using your smartphone. This Active Parking Assistance automatically detects parking spots and independently steers the vehicle backwards and forwards – supervised by the driver.

Important Limitations of Assistance Systems

GTS. Three letters and the insatiable hunger for more.

As with everything you love, there is never enough. But simply the desire for more. Simply 'More of what you love'. And that is precisely the inspiration for the 911 GTS models: more power, agility and dynamics – and a unique sporty appearance. Or in other words: even more Porsche .

¹ Race-Tex is a race-track-approved microfiber material with a high-quality look and feel, similar to suede. It has a comfortable soft grip and offers good hold. It is durable and easy to care for.

The race-track-approved Race-Tex fabric is also used on the seat centers of the Sport Seats Plus. Another GTS-specific feature: the embroidered 'GTS' logo on the headrests. In conjunction with the optional GTS interior package, you'll receive the black Race-Tex interior with extended leather features plus decorative stitching and other elements in Carmine Red or Chalk.

The optionally available Full Bucket Seats are made completely of carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) with carbon-weave finish. This provides especially good lateral support at minimal weight. The seat is covered in black leather – the seat center in perforated Race-Tex. A perfect finish: the 'GTS' logo on the headrests.

Other GTS highlights.

Adrenaline at the push of a button: the Sport Chrono Package with mode switch, Porsche Track Precision app and tire temperature display. Its functions enable performance focused tuning of the engine, chassis and transmission.

GTS-specific brakes.

Maximum braking power: six-piston aluminum monobloc fixed red brake calipers at the front and four-piston aluminum monobloc fixed red brake calipers at the rear, and a brake disc diameter of 408 mm at the front and 380 mm rear, give the 911 GTS models even more braking power than the base and S models.

911 GTS-specific wheels.

In addition to the 20/21-inch 911 Turbo S wheels with central locking in Satin Black, optional 20/21-inch RS Spyder Design wheels in Satin Black are also available for the 911 GTS models.

Lightweight Package.

Thanks to targeted weight reduction, the optional lightweight package gives the 911 GTS Coupe models even more performance focus: including lightweight glass, Full Bucket Seats, the removal of the rear seats, reduced insulation, rear-axle steering and specific aerodynamic measures on the underbody. This reduces the overall weight of the vehicle by over 55 lb.

GTS exterior package painted in High Gloss Black.

The optional GTS exterior package painted in High Gloss Black adds special accents to the exterior. It includes: the Sport Design Package with Sport Design side skirts painted in High Gloss Black, exterior mirrors painted in High Gloss Black, 20/21-inch 911 Turbo S wheels painted in High Gloss Black and inlay slats in the rear lid painted in High Gloss Black.

Watches and sports cars. Inseparably linked.

With the Sport Chrono Package with Porsche Design Subsecond chronograph, Porsche Design is returning to where it all began – in the car itself. And those who want to experience the unmistakable Porsche feeling on their wrist, can now find their perfect timepiece in the Sport Chrono Collection.

Mini Quad: 3S, 4S Setups Comparison and Migration

motorboat 4s

In this post we will have a look at the differences of mini quads running 3S and 4S lipo batteries. Many who are building their first mini quad might struggle in deciding which setup is best for them, I hope this post can answer some of those questions. I will also talk about how to move from a 3S mini-quad setup to a 4S setup, as I have been asked by FPV’ers who are looking for more power and speed.

sponsor-banner

* 3S and 4S refer to the number of cells in series in a LiPo battery. Learn more about the basics of LiPo batteries in this guide.

I am just beginning, should I start from 3S? Or go straight to 4S?

4S has now become the standard voltage level for 4″, 5″ and 6″ mini quads to use, so you should really just start with 4S. There is just too much extra investment, both time and money goes to waste when migrating from 3S to 4S later on.

If you think a 4S mini quad is just too powerful and hard to control, you can always adjust your throttle output range to 75% or even 50% to tame it down. This effectively reduce the power of your quad to a more manageable level. You can crank it back up as you gain confidence. You can do this in the Mixer page in Taranis TX, reduce weight to 75 or 50, and adjust the Offset so the range starts at -100.

Difference between a 3S and 4S mini quad setup

Obviously, the biggest difference is the voltage delivered to the motors. A 3S Lipo has a nominal voltage of 11.1V or 12.6V when fully charged, while a 4S Lipo has a nominal voltage of 14.8V and 16.8V at full charge.

Motors can spin faster when the applied voltage is higher. The RPM (rotation per minute) of the motor under no load is determined by the KV value of the motor – RPM = voltage x KV. (Read this post for more motor basics )

Let’s say we have a 2300KV motor, when powered with a fully charged 3S lipo (12.6V), RPM would be 2300 x 12.6 = 28900 in theory. That means the motor spins approximately 28,900 times a minute without any propellers. When you power the same motor with a 4S lipo (16.8V), the RPM is 2300 x 16.8 = 38640, and as you can see that’s a significant increase in RPM.

This increase in RPM means the motor can generate higher thrust, more power, faster flight speed and agility. But the throttle stick also becomes more sensitive and harder to control.

Note that 4S setups are usually a little heavier than 3S’s due to the additional weight of the voltage regulator, heavier batteries etc.

Upgrading from 3S to 4S

In case you have already built a 3S mini quad, and you are ready for a faster and more responsive setup, here is how you can upgrade it to 4S. If you can afford it, you might also consider building new quad purely designed for 4S power. It’s not a bad idea to have two quads when one is down for maintenance.

Motors and ESC’s

First question to ask: can your motors and ESC’s handle 4S for the increased voltage and current?

Most modern 2204, 2205 and 2206 motors are compatible with both 3S and 4S. Some 1806 motors might be only rated for 2S-3S, so it would be ideal to upgrade your motors to 22xx class which are rated for 4S.

Be aware of the current draw increase too, with the same setup, higher voltage would actually increase the current draw because of the higher RPM. When current gets higher than the safe limit, the motors will get hot as the winding starts to gather heat. If you keep pushing it, the enamel on the motor winding will burn off, causing electrical shorts inside the motor between poles. Eventually it will lead to fatal power loss, and the motor will fail while your quad is travelling at high speed. And BANG! Your quad crashes into pieces.

As for ESC’s, most ESC’s these days supports 4S some even up to 6S, but it’s always worth checking first. Make sure the current draw of your motor and propeller would not exceed the current rating on your ESC. In some cases it’s necessary to upgrade your ESCs from 12A-18A to 25A-30A or higher.

Other Electronics – VTX, FPV camera, OSD etc

Depends on what input voltage your electronics support in your quad, voltage regulator s might be required to convert 16V at 4S to something lower such as 5V or 12V. Fortunately there are many options these days, some FPV cameras and VTX support wide voltage range up to 6S, while there are PDB that provides 5V and 12V outputs.

To sum things up, 3S has moved to the back seat as the hobby has started to standardize things around 4S builds. Similar to an F1 flight controller , they work and fly well but F3/F4’s have become the norm, with F7’s probably to follow. Some pilots are now even using 5S and 6S LiPos in their mini-quads!

This was the best

I think your equations with higher voltage => higher current are wrong. You need to compare the power of the quad with 3S vs 4S lipo voltage and from there get the current: Let U to be voltage of 1S lipo, and I3 is current related to S3 battery and I4 is for S4 battery.

S3: P = 3*U*I3 S4: P = 4*U*I4 3*U*I3 = 4*U*I4 => I4 = 3*I3/4

Thus with S4 you will need only 3/4 of the current to get the same power as with S3.

Of course this is the simplification but to get the same power you definitely need less current with S4 than with S3.

please see my previous comment: https://oscarliang.com/3s-4s-setup-mini-quadcopter/#comment-14210

“When voltage increases, current draw will also go up.” How is it possible? sudden change in laws of physics?

Voltage increases RPM, and that leads to motor drawing more current. Just check thrust data and you will understand

The real technical explanation (still somewhat simplified, but good enough) for the increased current draw is this: let’s say the resistance of motor windings is 2 ohms. If we applied 12V to the windings, the current would be 12/2=6A. Now let’s take the 16V from 4S and apply that to the same motor with 2 ohms winding. The current would be higher, 16/2=8A. Really simple, Modzel, you just have to understand the formulas :)

Rpm increases with throttle, going to a higher voltage does not increase current draw, that’s inaccurate.

A higher 4s voltage will draw less current for the same amount of thrust as 3s does.

While you have more throttle to play with and the potential to draw a higher current, using more throttle power is a human choice and not an unavoidable effect of using a higher voltage.

If you produce say 2kg of thrust on 4s it will draw LESS current than it would producing the same 2kg of thrust on 3s.

Your post on current draw is inaccurate and misleading and should be revised.

If you want to keep the power of the motor at a constant, than what you say is correct, BUT it’s different on mini quads… one of the reasons we use 4S over 3S is because of the higher RPM we can get out of our motors.

When the motors are spinning faster, it uses more power, and so is the current. Don’t forget RPM and current is not a linear relationship, it’s exponential. So the current draw situation gets worse the higher the RPM goes.

change? try the formula yourself and you will understand :)

that is U/R=I

PROOF: If V=I*R, theN 2V=(I*R)/2

hi oscar, when you go on the website of DYS, dys.hk/ProductShow.asp?ID=91, you can read that a 1806 2300kv, can run a 5045 without any problem and they never use 5030. Why?

Luc, France

they have changed the spec since. When they came out they were only supposed to run on 3S although some use it on 4S as well.

How do You get OSD alarm work with both of battery types? Generaly You have to choose that you use 3S or 4S.

Hi I have a question about the eachine 250 racer drone, i would like to upgrade the esc’s to 20a ones but the stock esc only has 6 conection points ( that must be including the servo wires ) How to solder a new esc with more poles to it ?

my suggestion is… leave the 250 racer as it is, and build a new one with a better frame :)

I have t motors mn2204 2300kv and kiss 12a , Im thinking to give 4s a try , what do you think can i go with 4s ??

definitely as long as your other gear can support it and you stay within a 5040 propeller. It will give you a lot more power.

Thank you for taking the time to make all of this information available. I enjoy reading it and I feel like I’m beginning to learn.

I’m building my first quad – I’m not in any rush to get into the air. I’d really like to make sure I have a firm understanding of as much as I possibly can to begin with, and make sure I create a build with the greatest chance of success.

I’ve begun purchasing the parts – I might have made some bad decisions. I hope you can find the time to give me your opinion.

I’m building on the HobbyKing FPV250 Ghost Edition frame (with the cool looking LED lights). I’ve purchased the following setup:

Cobra 2204 2300kv Motors Turnigy 18A ESCs Multiple sets of multiple propeller sizes for testing (all Gemfans, three sizes: 5030, 5045, and 6045) Turnigy 4S 20C 4000maH battery (this is now a source of concern at this point – worried it might be too big and heavy)

I’m concerned that running that heavy of a setup (with that battery) might burn out the Cobras, especially if I try running the 6045s.

For starters I will not be placing any FPV equipment on it, so the only other things will be a CC3D FC, the PDB that came with the frame, whatever wiring/velcro/sticky pads I will be using, my low battery warning beeper, and the receiver from my Turnigy 9X transmitter.

The overall weight (even with the huge battery) will be coming in at around 800 and 900 grams, depending on solder/double-sided pads, velcro, etc.. (current weigh-in is 824 grams, but some wires will be trimmed down from ESCs and motors, and then the solder/velcro/etc… will be added).

I’m considering purchasing a 3S 2200maH battery out of concern for burning out those Cobras. Any thoughts?

Michael Anderson

Hi Micheal. Motors and ESCs all look fine. As for props, 2300KV motors mostly runs 4 or 5 inch props, 5030 on 4S is good enough, with 5045, the thing is going to fly like a rocket! 6045 is probably too much i don’t recommend it. Yes the lipo is too big!, 1300mah-1800mah is a good range of capacity, while the weight isn’t too much. you should defintely check out this parts list and this cobra motor thrust tests

Thank you for the reply! I’m going to purchase a Turnigy Nano-Tech 4S 1800maH battery (hopefully they will be back in stock in the coming months) for this build.

I am confused about one thing – I’m hoping you can answer this question for me:

Every article I’ve read has suggested that the thrust power needs of a quadcopter is at least 2:1 in grams – some even suggest multiplying your quads weight by 2.2 and making sure you have a max thrust power at least equal to that (so if your quad weighs 1000 grams – multiply by 2.2 and you need a setup with a max thrust of at least 2200 grams, or 550 grams of thrust per motor). Easy enough to understand.

My question is this: if my current build weight is at max 900 grams even with that huge 4S 4000maH battery, and the Cobra 2204 2300kv motors with 5045 props on a 4S battery produce 710 grams of thrust per motor (by your own measurements) – then I would be at 2840 grams of thrust versus 900 grams total weight, with a thrust-to-weight ratio of over 3:1 – much greater than the suggested minimum of 2.2 times the total weight.

Going only by that calculation, it seems like my quad should have more than enough power to be able to fly with that battery.

However, virtually everything I’ve read says that it’s way too big (yourself included) – and everybody with similar builds to this is using much smaller batteries (like what you suggested 1100-1800 maH size) – what am I missing here?

Please understand that I’m not doubting you, and like I said above I am ordering the smaller battery. I would just like to know what it is I’m not grasping about this – obviously I am missing something!

Thanks again for your reply (and for providing a great web-site), I hope you are able to answer this as well.

For mini quad, people generally use it for racing and fly really fast, so we want to achieve the greatest thrust:weight ratio possible. It’s not uncommon to find someone building a quad with thrust:weight ratio of 7:1 !!! the 2:1 or 2.2:1 is the bare minimum you should have on a multicopter, it flies… but it won’t go fast…

Update from last fall: I completed the 250 mini-quad (ended up going with a QAV-250 type frame, but everything else the same)… Amazingly, even with that 4000mah 4S battery, this thing is still crazy-fast. “eCalc” claims that the top speed with that battery and 5030 props is around 60mph, 85mph with 5045 (all GemFan), and a flight time of about 15 mins (AUW is around 815g).

I can confirm the flight time, I flew for about 13 mins and my low-voltage buzzer had not gone off yet. I looked at the cell voltage when it landed, and it was still at about 3.72v per cell, then after rest it came back up to about 3.83v/cell, so pretty near storage. I have my buzzer set for 3.5. I can’t confirm the mph as I don’t have a radar – but I can say:

You were right: this thing is FAST! (even with the massive battery)

I was actually getting kind of stressed out flying it because it felt like it just wanted to run away from me. I had a lot of trouble just getting it to hover and stay in one spot – and the slightest pitch in any direction sent it flying off much faster than I was expecting. I did one punch-out for about 3 seconds and had to stop because I couldn’t believe how high it got, and how quickly it climbed! I’m going to try to correct the drifting with PID settings (I’ve read that the “I” setting might be able to help with that) – it’s a CC3D in “attitude” mode.

I’m going to change to a 3S 2200mah battery. That will drop its weight down to the 560g range, and lower max speed down into the 40mph range on 5030’s (again – according to “eCalc”). I think that would probably be best for me right now, until I get a better handle on controlling this thing. It is NOTHING like my toy quad that I’ve been flying (a “UDI 818A”) – that’s like comparing a Ford Mustang to a go-cart. I can’t even imagine what it would be like to fly one of those professional racer quads (or a “WarpQuad”), topping 100mph. Just crazy! Honestly, at this point: I wouldn’t be able to handle it, since right now I can barely handle this, and I didn’t even push it that hard.

At least I didn’t crash, lol… the worst thing that happened was I nicked up the props a little bit in a brief brush with the side of my house (bricks).

Thank you again for all of your time and energy in making this blog available. It has been very helpful and educational to me as I was putting this thing together.

I am starting a ZMR250 4s set-up .I have 4 motors cobra 1960kv , what do you suggest as escs please ?

have a look at what propeller and lipo cell count you are going to use here, and see how much current you will draw…

then have a look at this ESC section to choose an ESC…

I have a question regarding the relation between motor and ESC. As i understand, one should check the maximum A for a given motor to determine what minimum A an ESC should be, right? My question: is there any danger to use a much bigger A-ESC? > E.g.: if the motor specs indicate that maximum A is 23, we could state that a 25 or 30A ESC would be correct, but is it also okay to use a 40A?

Thanks for your help regarding this. Greetings from Belgium,

it’s okay to use “overkill” ESC :) the only drawback i can see would be the excessive weight.

Apologies as I'm sure this has been asked many times. I want to know if a motor is listed as running on 3s battery if you can run it on 4s even if its not listed. Lets take this motor as an example. If it can run on 4s how would you know? https://store.flitetest.com/emax-gt2215-09-1180kv-brushless-motor-emx-mt-0409/p694266

I have run 3S motors on 6S with no issue using a bit of science. It will depend on several factors. The key is to know how many watts the motor can handle safely and not exceed that rating. If you exceed it's rating, you will let the smoke out. The unfortunate thing is that motors are not rated by their Watt capability and are rated by the more arbitrary KV. If you dig into the spec sheets, you can get a better idea. E=IR is your friend. Watts = Amps * Volts. More "S" = More volts. The more volts you run, the less amps you need to reach the same watts. If you limit max throttle below the smoke point, you will be fine. If you are planning on running full throttle on 6S, you will most likely see the smoke monster! The 3S motors I ran on 6S (Sunnysky x2212 kv980) ran fine at 4S rating without much heat. Cheers! LitterBug

@LitterBug - sorry to pick on you but your answer was the one I"m interested in (although the short answers are definitely valid). I'm not real proud of my electronics knowledge so I'm going to ask a few more questions. If you want to point me to something to read that's fine too. Hopefully this will help other folks. E=IR E=?, I=?, R=? Amps is what your motor draws depending on how much work its doing i.e. size of prop and you can measure it with a meter. Watt rating - only the manufacturer knows that and sometimes they supply it. You said "The more volts you run, the less amps you need to reach the same watts (got it). If you limit max throttle below the smoke point, you will be fine." So in the real world do you limit throttle or prop size or both? I guess the simplest answer it to buy a motor rated for 4s or just go to a more powerful, heavier motor.

@danskis what motor is it? I’ve run my emax c pack on 4s with a 9x6 prop with no issues.

@The Hangar - well its this motor. http://www.valuehobby.com/power-sys...runner-airplane/gforce-e450-1200kv-motor.html So if you go to the chart at the bottom of the page you'll see that it can handle 327 watts on a 3s running a 11X4.7 prop. So if I wanted to run 4s I just have to stay under 327 watts by putting a smaller prop on. I think. As it turns out this motor has plenty of power for my bloody baron which has almost unlimited vertical on 3s. I would recommend it. LitterBug did answer my question which was how do you really know without guessing or doing the how hot is the motor test. Unfortunately very few motors list their max watt output. On the other hand its just another piece in the puzzle of how to set up the power system in your plane. And thanks for the Simple Stick!!!! Not built yet but its on the list.

The only thing that will smoke a motor is melting the enamel off of the windings, thus shorting it out. You can't have excessive heat in the motor, or it will poof, and your plane will plop. If you increase voltage, you will have to decrease amperage to keep the same wattage.

I have about 7 of those motors on currently flying planes. It is fine on 4S, just don't run higher than a 9" prop, but as others have mentioned, you need to use a wattmeter to get into the correct range. I use 8x6 on a small 4S powered wing and it's fine.

Build cheap, crash cheap

A Wattmeter/Ammeter is an essential tool for the electric RC hobbyist. Get one. As discussed above the limiting factor we encounter with our RC model motors is the Wattage and thus heat dissipation, not the breakdown voltage of the insulation, so 4S on a 3S motor will be fine as long as you don't overprop it and exceed the maximum amount of heat it can dissipate. Yes, it is stupid that manufacturers don't give you a maximum Wattage rating, a decent substitute is to take their test results and figure the maximum Wattage based on that yourself. Throttle limiting is one way to do it, but not a good way. Testing props with a test rig that measures thrust and power is the right way, a close second is just testing the static amp draw with a Wattmeter. OK during static testing generally means OK to fly. I've had motors get hotter than I'd like during a static test and land cool to the touch after flying hard just because there is so much more airflow when flying. Depending on the prop you might also draw more current static than while flying because the prop is stalling with no forward speed.

Toyota 4S-FE/Fi Engine

  • Specifications

Toyota 4S engine specs

Toyota 4s-fe/fi engine reliability, problems and repair.

In 1987, a new 4S 1.8-liter engine replaced the Toyota 1S. It origins from the 3S cylinder unit, in which the cylinder diameter was diminished to 82.5 mm. The crankshaft remained intact. The engine was also equipped with the different intake and exhaust manifolds.

The 4S engine differs from the 1S. It has a new 16 valve cylinder head. It is similar to that one, which goes with the 3S. Engine is equipped with timing belt. Replacement of the belt is necessary every 60,000 miles (100,000 km) of mileage. If it is not done, belt break down can result in bended 4S valves. The S series also includes 3S and 5S .

The production of that engine came to a halt in 1999. That’s why it was replaced with a new 1ZZ-FE engine .

Toyota 4S engine modifications, features and differences

1. 4S-Fi (1987 – 1991) is the first type of the engine with a single point injection. The compression ratio equals 9.3, power is 105 HP at 5,600 rpm, and torque is 149 Nm (110 lb•ft) at 2,800 rpm. 2. 4S-FE Gen 1 (1989 – 1999) is the second type of the engine with a multi point injection. The power of that engine has increased to 115 HP at 5,600 rpm, and its torque is 157 Nm (116 lb•ft) at 4,400 rpm. The engine was mounted in Toyota Corona T170. 3. 4S-FE Gen 2 (1995 – 1999) is the 4S last type of the engine with a compression ratio enlarged to 9.5. The power of the engine is 125 HP at 6,000 rpm with a torque of 162 Nm (119 lb•ft) at 4,600 rpm. The 4S-FE Gen 2 is under the bonnet of Chaser X80 and Vista V30.

Toyota 4S engine problems and malfunctions

The 4S engine failures are similar to those of Toyota 3S. One can find a useful information on advantages and disadvantages of those engines HERE . To put it in other words, the Toyota 4S engine is simple enough and is common for the 1990-s. Its reliability and nice engine lifespan is one of its biggest advantage. It is a nice means for a comfortable movement from point A to point B.

Toyota 4S engine tuning

4s chiptuning. n/a.

The 4S engine tuning can become quite a difficult and absurd task. If you are burning with desire to intensify the power of your engine, then you should buy a cold air intake, 4-2-1 header and adjust the ECU. The upgrades will help to get 10-15 HP. It is expensive and unreasonably to assemble the 4S-FE Turbo on your own. You had better buy a ready-made 3S-GTE .

  19. Running 4s on "6s" motors

If you want to use a 300w motor it is going to pull the same amount of power - 300w whether you use a 3s,4s,5s,or 6s battery. 300w. You can get 300w just a easily by. 12v (3s) *25amps=300w or. 24v (4s)*12amps=300w. still 300w. Lower amps does not mean lower power. It just means lower amps. Mar 23, 2016, 02:58 PM.

  20. Can you run 4s on a 3s motor?

And lighter is usually a good thing when it comes to endurance. Watts = Volts * Amps. 1S nominal voltage = 3.7V, 3S = 11.1, 4S = 14.8. So if you are pulling 20Amps at 11.1 volts, you are using 222 watts. 20A x 11.1V = 222. if you want to stay at or below 222 watts on 4S you will need to stay below 222W/14.8V = 15A.
