The rolex yacht-master ii: for those who consider themselves rolex enthusiasts, it's one of the most polarizing watches the crown produces. and yet there is more – much more – to this relative behemoth than meets the eye. we wanted to see what would happen if we met this technically unique, programmable flyback yacht timer chronograph on its own terms – read on to join us in our journey into one of the most idiosyncratically styled and mechanically sophisticated rolexes ever made..

I’m going to be completely honest: I was thoroughly prepared to have a negative reaction to this watch. Let’s face it; it’s a head-scratcher for the average Rolex/Submariner/GMT Master/Day-Date lover. First of all it’s pretty damned big. This is a 44 mm watch; it was born a 44 mm watch and it’ll die a 44 mm watch and that is nothing you or anybody else can do about it. You can have it in four different metals, and therefore, weights, ranging from steel (heavy) to gold/steel (heavier) to solid yellow gold (even heavier) to  platinum and white gold combined (Schwarzeneggerian). It has a Cerachrom bezel in an absolutely screaming shade of blue, and it says YACHT-MASTER in giant letters right across the bottom third or so just to remove any lingering shade of doubt in the minds of any small-craft skipper for leagues around that they are in the presence of, well, the Master of a Yacht; it is not an introverted watch by any stretch of the imagination.

On top of everything else, the Yacht-Master II has a complication that pretty much no watch guy or gal ever can remember what do with, or has a perceived need for: it is a regatta timer, which is about as niche a complication as you can imagine. If you get a bunch of watch nuts together there is an excellent chance that you can get a more lucid explanation out of somebody for the Equation of Time than you can for a regatta timer (which is saying something) and it says something about the relative obscurity of the complication in general, and the relative niche-ness of the Yacht-Master II in particular, that when we got it into the office we had five people who live and breathe watches sitting around scratching our heads because no one could quite remember how the darned thing works. You put all those things together and you should have a watch that a dyed-in-the-wool horological classicist should thoroughly disdain. Right?

Actually, wrong. But let’s back up a bit.

First of all this is technically a very interesting watch and it’s worth your attention just on the level of interesting horological problem solving alone. A regatta timer is used by the skipper of a yacht to determine when their vessel is allowed to cross the starting line. Sailboats can’t just hover at the starting line of a yacht race, so what happens is that the racing committee establishes a countdown period during which the boats have to tack back and forth at the starting line without actually crossing; if you cross early, there is a penalty and if you are too cautious and cross late you will probably cross the finish line behind the boats that made it over the start line ahead of you. The countdown can be anywhere from five to ten minutes depending on the rules and race.

The Yacht-Master II is a programmable, flyback regatta timer that allows you to select a countdown interval of anything from one to ten minutes; in addition if you have started the countdown early or late, you can synchronize your watch “on the fly” when you hear the second of the two audible signals which are usually given at the start of a race (the signal to start the countdown comes first, and is usually followed by a warning signal closer to the start). Here’s how it works.

To set the countdown timer, you turn the bezel (Rolex calls it the "Command Bezel") a quarter turn to the left. This locks the lower chrono pusher and engages the setting mechanism for the triangular red countdown hand. You then unscrew the crown to its first position, and set the countdown hand – setting is one-way only but at 10 minutes, if you continue to turn the crown, the countdown hand will fly back to 1 and you can continue until you reach the desired number of minutes. When you’re done, you screw the crown back down, and turn the bezel back to its starting position, and you’re ready to regatta.

When the first gun (or other audible signal) is heard, you start the countdown . . . and that’s it. Now a really neat trick here is that you may, for some reason, have started your countdown too early, or too late. If that’s the case, all you have to do is wait for the second gun/signal, and hit the re-set button – the seconds hand will fly back to the zero mark and begin running again immediately; and the minute countdown hand will fly back to the nearest minute and likewise start counting down again. It’s the fact that the flyback is to the nearest minute, not to zero, that allows you to re-synch your countdown with the official countdown time, that gives the Yacht-Master II much of its utility, and much of its technical interest.

Okay, sure it’s technically interesting – but what about the aesthetics? All I can tell you is that, much to my very pleasant surprise, it was colossally fun to wear in every sense of the word. The fact that it is so unapologetically extroverted is actually the secret to its appeal.  The weight isn't a problem (at least, not for me, and not in steel) and I found I could wear it all day without discomfort despite the overall size – partly thanks to the downward curvature of the lugs, which ensured a comfortable fit on my 7 inch wrist.  The sharply contrasting deep blued hands, white dial, and red countdown hand – and, yes, that bright blue bezel – give the whole watch a suitably jaunty, nautical feel and make it a pleasure to look at (and at night visibility is very good; the lume on the hands and dial is almost startlingly bright).

Yes, this is an extroverted watch, but the quality of execution is very clean and very high (as is usually the case with Rolex) and it’s so much the opposite of what I’d ordinarily wear that having it on gave a feeling almost like a Walter Mitty fantasy coming to life. I felt like a guy who’s worn a blue suit and rep tie and driven a four door Merc his whole life, who somehow one day finds himself in a pair of ripped jeans and a beat up flight jacket, cruising down some winding secondary road on an old shovelhead Harley, and suddenly catches himself thinking, My god, all the wasted years. Ultimately I started to feel that objecting to the over-the-top-ness  of the Yacht-Master II was silly, even narcissistic – if you go into a Joss Whedon actioner expecting a Lars Von Trier art-house tearjerker to unspool, you probably have only yourself to blame.

It is a rationally appealing uitlitarian tool watch? I'm not the one to ask. There is no way for me to evaluate what someone who actually owns a ’36 Herreshoff classic yacht and takes it on the regatta circuit would actually think of the Yacht-Master II, or whether they would find it useful. But I can tell you that it is actually a ton of fun to wear, and a big part of the reason is the very thing many object to at first – that this is a watch that pulls no punches when it comes to being larger than life.

It has that one most essential element for something to be a successful style exercise: the courage of its convictions, and if you think of yourself resolutely as a smaller-than-forty millimeter, tasteful restraint kinda guy, get one on your wrist for a surprisingly refreshing change of pace, and you can feel larger than life too.

The Large Rolex

For the longest time, and I’ll take the blame for this, I couldn’t see the Yacht-Master II as nothing more than  The Large Rolex . The 44mm wide Yacht-Master II was the go-to large Rolex, with a massive gap in size between it and the 40mm Sea-Dwellers, Submariners, and others. Debuted in 2007, the Yacht-Master II was followed just next year by the absolutely massive Deepsea that had the same width at 44mm but was considerably thicker, so it both appeared and wore much, much larger than the YMII, placing it far off the map for most.

The Sky-Dweller made its debut in 2012, and while it also looks and wears large, until 2017 it was exclusively available in solid gold cases, rendering it about 40% more expensive than the two-tone YMII that had already been available by 2012. I did look these things up – wouldn’t want to pose as someone who remembers all this. No wonder then, that the Yacht-Master II became The Large Rolex worn by premiership ballerinas footballers, celebrities, and… basically everyone who wanted in on the large watch craze with a Rolex, but didn’t like or couldn’t afford the Sky-Dweller. The fact that Rolex took so long and only debuted the larger, 43mm wide Sea-Dweller in 2017 is just Rolex being its usual cautious self that caused it to nearly miss the boat on the large watch trend – but that’s for another discussion.

Stars aligned and I ended up in a Rolex boutique with a camera in one hand and the Yacht-Master II in the other – welcome to watch blogger life. It was only there that I realized I should have cared about the Yacht-Master II because my goodness, it is a truly impressive piece of watchmaking. It’s the Bentley of watches: big, brash, and showy, bought by a demographic that people not part of are keen not to be associated with… But beyond all that lies a deeply impressive, well-made, uniquely cool product.

I am realizing now that it might as well just be my boredom with the Submariners and Datejusts speaking, but as I was reviewing my images on the spot on the camera’s screen (not even a larger, better display) I realized the many intricate and well-made details of the Yacht-Master II. It’s proper Rolex through and through – you’d never ever mistake the entire watch or any of its details for anything but a Rolex – but at the same time its functionality, layout, as well as its case and dial design are all refreshingly unique.

Yes, that’s what got me. The weird, piston-style pushers (that need not be screwed down), the weird, but strangely beautiful proportions of the lugs and bezel, the incredible quality of the blue ceramic bezel and its laser-etched, PVD-coated numerals, the weird arch of the dial that resembles (in my mind at least) a gauge of a submarine, and the ADD-curing tactile feel of the Ring Command bezel. These make the Yacht-Master II not only unlike any other Rolex, but unlike any other watch. How did this happen?

Whether or not Rolex had the large watch trend on its mind when designing the Yacht-Master II, we’ll never know. I have no hopes in receiving a definitive “yes, we did” or “no, we didn’t” answer from them. The Yacht-Master II was designed with a programmable fly-back regatta chronograph ( ooooh, just writing that down felt strangely satisfying ) and it was also the watch to debut Rolex’s Ring Command rotating bezel system that was later also used in the Sky-Dweller.

We’ll look at how it all works soon but for a second imagine the amount of R&D time and effort that must have gone into designing what is now called the Manufacture Rolex Calibre 4161 “with some 360 components.” What the heck, even Rolex appears to be proud of this movement as this, I believe, is the only movement they proactively communicate the exact component count of. It is known that the 4130 chronograph in the Daytona has 201 parts, but Rolex officially only ever said they managed to reduce the chronograph’s component count by 60%, without providing the total 201 count – and as far as the other movements are concerned, no exact component figure is ever shared.

Give or take the large watch trend, the Yacht-Master II is also something else: it’s Rolex’s love letter to one of its obscure, but long-standing passions, yachting. Worry not, I’ll spare you the long, teary-eyed story of all that’s exciting about yachting. That’s partly because I’ve never been on a racing yacht and partly because it’s irrelevant in this discussion – you either already are a skipper at heart, or if you’re not, my measly few words won’t get you started. Rolex has produced a number of longer videos on the topic, so if you can take 24 minutes of “uplifting-instrumental-music.mp3” and are desperate to learn more about yachting, then I suggest you watch the video above. But only then.

So, looking at it strictly as a watch, without its implications, customer base, or inspiration, what do we have with the Rolex Yacht-Master II? From my time with it, I came away with a new-found admiration for its many impressive feats starting with its mechanical engineering and ending with its countless neatly executed details. The Rolex Yacht-Master II was specifically designed for regatta yacht races where the starting procedure of the race requires each yacht to be positioned as best as possible when a given time limit expires. From what I understand this time limit before the actual start varies between 5 and 10 minutes and so skippers need a regatta timer watch with a countdown timer (i.e. a reverse chronograph) that can be programmed to count down from a pre-set time between 5 and 10 minutes. When the officials give a signal, the countdown begins, the pre-set regatta chronographs are started, and the maneuvering begins.

Even though the Yachtmaster collection is one of the newest additions to the Rolex lineup, there has been a great amount of innovation over the years. History of the Rolex Yacht-Master

While we wouldn’t be introduced to the very first Yacht-Master until 1992, Rolex’s history with sailing actually dates back to 1958, the year the Swiss watchmaker partnered with the prestigious New York Yacht Club. By then, Rolex had already garnered a reputation for making great waterproof watches with the invention of their Rolex Oyster case back in 1926. So, the partnership was actually quite a natural next step.

Rolex solidified its relationship with the world of sailing in 1966 when Francis Chichester — one of history’s most exceptional navigators — became the first person to sail around the globe on his yacht, the Gipsy Moth IV, with a Rolex on his wrist. His voyage, which spanned from August 1966 to May 1967, took him 29,600 miles around the world. however, the most impressive part is that he only had a few tools to help him navigate his way, including nautical charts, a sextant, and a Rolex Oyster Perpetual. The Rolex wristwatch chronometer he used was a reliable and steady partner, helping him keep time amidst rough conditions for 226 days at sea.

Despite the brand’s massive success in creating watches that were great for sailing, Rolex continued to hold back its efforts to create a watch specifically for this category. The brand did briefly dabble with the idea in the 1960’s, releasing a prototype dial for the Cosmograph chronograph with the name “Yacht Master” on it, but the idea never took hold. Today, only two known examples of this prototype Daytona Yacht-Master are known to exist — one belonging to Eric Clapton (whose model sold for $125,100 at auction in 2003) and one owned by legendary Rolex collector John Goldberger.

In 1992, we were finally introduced to the modern Yacht Master we know and love today. Its official name, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master, was the brand’s first ultra-luxury sports watch built for the open seas. To make sure that collectors understood the luxury aspect of this new watch, the very first 40mm model was forged entirely out of solid 18k yellow gold and featured a matching gold bi-directional rotating bezel (marked to 60 minutes for timing) alongside a gold Oyster bracelet. Over the next few decades, Rolex has expanded the collection using a variety of materials as well as adding new sizes to the luxury nautical watch collection.

15 years after the first release of the Yachtmaster, Rolex introduced the regatta chronograph Yacht-Master II specifically made for sportsmen to use while regatta racing. To cater specifically to these athletes, Rolex outfitted the watch with important features like a programmable countdown timer (to measure with reliability how much time until the start of the race) and both flyback and fly-forward functionality (for easy synchronization should the race committee have to restart the race sequence). Another key difference is that the Rolex Yacht-Master II is only available in one size, 44mm with an Oyster case and bracelet. However, there are a variety of alloys available.

How Much is a Rolex Yacht-Master?

Because there is such a wide variety of sizes and materials used across the Rolex Yacht-Master collection, the prices tend to vary significantly. For example, you can pick up some of the older or smaller Rolex Yacht-Master models for around $5,000 on the second-hand market. However, newer, larger Yacht-Master models, especially those forged out of precious metals, can sell for well into five-figures.

How much is a Yacht Master II?

Due to its large size, complicated movement, and frequent use of precious metals, the Yacht-Master II is one of the higher-priced Rolex watches you can purchase. In terms of pre-owned prices, a stainless steel reference of the Yacht-Master II starts around $15,000. This may seem steep, considering that this Yacht-Master II is stainless steel and doesn’t feature any diamonds or gems. However, the complexity of the movement is what really makes this watch shine and it is the primary factor behind its high price tag. On the higher end, the yellow gold ref. 116688 costs $43,550 retail and can be bought for around $28,000 on the pre-owned market.

Buying Pre-Owned vs New Yacht-Master Watches

The key difference between buying a pre-owned Rolex Yacht-Master or Yacht-Master II versus a new one is the price. For a retail Rolex model , you will surely pay a premium – especially if you choose one of the precious metal models. On the secondary market, you can get a Yacht-Master for a much lower price, and many collectors find this option a better value for their investment. However, this is still totally dependent on the specifics about the watch which you can get an idea of in the chart above. The price of a pre-owned Yacht-Master will always vary depending on factors like its alloy, the year it was produced, condition, and whether it is a luxury-oriented Yacht-Master or a sporty and purpose-built Yacht-Master II.

Often, many collectors turn to the second-hand market to purchase a Rolex Yacht-Master. Of course, the price is a big factor, but due to the durability and overall build quality, a used Rolex Yacht-Master represents a highly competitive offering. Because these watches are purpose-built to withstand weather and water, they tend to age well even if they have been heavily worn, loved, and used. Since the Yacht-Master has only been around for about 30 years, it is still quite easy to track down some of the early references. The Rolex Yachtmaster II is a very peculiar watch in that it’s just so spectacularly different to every other watch in the ‘ Oyster Perpetual ‘ family that Rolex makes! It’s like some rebellious sea-faring child of the Titan 44mm Deepsea [116660] and the more sophisticated 40mm Yacht-Master.

It being similar to the Deepsea in not just size but with the environment that it has been designed for. Whilst the Deepsea may not have any more complications than just a simple date function; it has been designed to solve a remarkably specific problem. Not getting crushed by enormous water pressure under a staggering   3900m (12800ft) of water! Is this a depth that I think many divers (and Rolex Deepsea’s by extension) will find themselves in on a frequent basis – or maybe just once or twice in their lifetime. Once the watch has left the Rolex factory – I think the odds are fairly low that the watch will ever be subjected to such high pressure after initial testing.

• The Submariner is for divers that need a watch to survive deep dives under water.
• The Sea-Dweller and Deepsea are just Submariners on steroids. The Deepsea will theoretically survive down to a depth of 3900m (12800ft) underwater; but, the current Guinness World Record for the deepest scuba dive is  332.35 m  (1,090 ft 4.5 in)   underwater. So the watch can happily endure a depth over 12 times deeper than the deepest human (scuba) dive attained.

So with all the watches that Rolex makes to solve different problems – some of them will get to use their special complication and features significantly more than others. But that’s ok because that’s why Rolex’s watches are so valuable. Their value is not just held in the materials used to make them; but, in the time spent on researching how to make these revolutionary complications, the exemplary finish of the watch, and the Rolex name that assures of the quality and reliability underneath the case back.

The (admittedly rare) problem that the  YachtMaster II [116680] solves is as you may have guessed – something to do with yachts. This watch has the fascinating complication of a programmable regatta chronograph .

What Is A Programmable Regatta Chronograph?

As far as complications go the regatta chronograph is certainly a more obscure one. It’s the type of complication that only hardcore watch lovers will be able to explain (or people who happen to own a watch with one).

It is quite simply – a fancy countdown timer. To explain how this watch is so fancy we must go on a voyage of discovery to see where the Yachtmaster II sits in the world of watches.

• Large legible dial (with luminous fill)
• Water-resistant casing to 100m underwater
• Durable construction
• Push buttons that are easily manipulated – even with cold hands
• Regatta chronograph – with a flyback and flyforward function for live synchronising
• Reliable strap and clasp that will keep the watch safely on the wrist

A  Regatta  – is a series of boat races. A Chronograph  – is a timer (in this case counting down). The programmable part – is the ability to change the duration of the countdown timer (between 1 and 10 minutes).

This being a very technical feat of functionality that Rolex reportedly took over 35,000 hours of development to build the Yacht-Master II’s 4161 , automatic regatta chronograph movement. It’s built from 360 components , is certified a Swiss chronometer ( COSC ), beats at  28,800 vph , contains 31 Jewels , and has an approximate power reserve of 72 hours .

The ‘Programmable Regatta Chronograph’ gives the Yachtmaster II [116680] the ability to set important countdown timers (particularly for skippers of yachts) for a good start in yacht races.

How to operate the programmable Regatta Chronograph?

• Unscrew crown to 1st out position
• Turn the bezel 90 ° anti-clockwise
• Press pusher at 4 o’clock
• Turn crown clockwise to desired timer length
• Rotate bezel back to original position
• Screw crown back into position
• Pusher at 2 will stop and start the chronograph.
• Pusher at 4 will make the chronograph seconds counter fly back to 0 if between 0-30 seconds. If pushed between 30-60 it will make the second counter fly forward to the nearest minute.
• To reset the regatta chronograph. Push the pusher at 2 and then the one at 4 and it will return to the programmed countdown duration selected at the beginning (1-10 minutes).

The Rolex Yachtmaster II is a very loud watch that shouts out for attention from everyone with eyes to see. It’s made for grabbing people’s attention and is perhaps the most unreserved and extroverted watch that Rolex make. Even though the stainless steel [116680] model that I’m reviewing here isn’t made from solid gold like its   Yellow Gold and  two-tone  rose gold siblings, it’s still very eye-catching. Having this watch made in  solid gold just amplifies the exuberance of it to a higher level of excess and extravagance.

The Oyster Bracelet

The bracelet is unsurprisingly of the Rolex Oyster variety being both robust in build and comfortable on the wrist. The  Oysterlock folding clasp is of a solid construction and is unlikely to be accidentally opened, with an  Easylink extension system that gives an additional 5mm when opened up for additional comfort.

The Bright Blue  Cerachrom Bezel

The bezel is a very curious part of the Yacht-Master II with it being the first watch to have the bezel directly connected to the movement. Rolex has dubbed this new invention as the ‘Ring Command Bezel’ , which effectively is a mechanical component of the regatta chronograph that lets the desired countdown duration be programmed into the watch. It’s big and bold and is one of the key components of the YachMaster II’s designed. The 10-0 minute markings reflecting the dials markings again but in even bigger and bolder text that refuses to be ignored. The words ‘YACHT-MASTER II’ emblazoned at the bottom of the dial shout out to everyone unfamiliar with Rolex’s many different watch collections. Its boldness emphasises that the person wearing this watch is not unaccustomed to luxury and may indeed own their own yacht.

Dial Design

The dial is an unusual style that really distinguishes itself from your typical Rolex by its bold exaggerated design. Its lovely white lacquered dial is a pleasure on the eye with its matt finish that boosts dial readability.

Its large Arabic numerals on the dial do not correlate to hour markers but instead are used for the regatta chronograph minutes countdown. These mirroring the larger markings on the ‘Ring Command Bezel’.

A small sub-dial sits by the 6 o’clock marker showing a running second complication with a bright blue ring, distinguishing it from the main dial.

The hour markers are represented in a series of blue squares that add to the chunky form and outgoing character of the watch.

A red lacquered triangular minute pointer and needle seconds hand show the progression of the regatta timer, in an effort to separate the timekeeping functions and chronograph to good effect.

They also instituted a patented shape on the inside of the bracelet which has a cushioning system built-in to it which allows the bracelet to take the natural shape of a wrist making the Oysterflex possible the most comfortable rubber watch band. An Oysterlock safety clasp keeps the watch from opening and looks stunning in 18ct Everose gold. Everose gold is a patented 18kt pink gold alloy that is unique to Rolex watches and has been used with all their pink gold oyster cases since 2005.

You'll also find a black matte Cerachrom dial which is a hardened ceramic material that is a tough and highly scratch resistant material that has anticorrosive properties and is impervious to discoloration from exposure to Ultra Violet rays. Perfect for spending your days relaxing on the deck of a luxury yacht.

The dial on the Rolex Yacht-Master 116655 with its cyclops date magnifier could be passed as that of a Submariner if it weren't for all the Everose gold used. You can find this material used on the rims of the index hour markers, the Rolex logo, and luminous filled hands. You won't find rose gold on the dial of any watch in the Submariner series (yet?). The combination of black and Everose gold is a real eye-grabber giving this the look of a really luxurious watch.

What's running inside this stunning watch? The Yacht-Master 40mm runs off an automatic Rolex perpetual movement, the Rolex caliber 3135. This 31 jewel movement beats at 28,800 vph and has a power reserve of about 50 hours.

Rolex Yachtmaster II

At a glance, this watch is an impressive piece of eye-candy with a polished case and two-tone rose gold and stainless steel bracelet. The design used vibrant colors from the blue Cerachrom bezel to the rose gold pushers and patented Triplock crown. The white dial is equally full of harmonic colors with blue steel hour, minute and subdial seconds hands and rose gold and red chronograph hands. A rose gold rimmed sub-dial and applied rose gold rimmed index hour markers tie it all together.

A unique feature of the Yachtmaster II is the regatta chronograph and features the world's first mechanical programmable countdown with a memory. You can accurately sync the watch with the starting sequence of a yacht race.

Unlike most bezels which don't operate as a component of the movement, the easy-to-use and bi-directional Ring Command bezel on the Yachtmaster II operates in conjunction with the regatta chronograph as an integral component of the movement. This bezel is the method in which you can synchronize the countdown timer to the start times of a race. Each time you press the button you can adjust the timer by one-minute increments for up to a 10-minute countdown timer. When you adjust the rotating bezel back to its default middle position, it resets the chronograph back to its main function.

This COSC certified Swiss chronometer is the self-winding caliber 4161 automatic movement beats at 28,800 vph and is completely manufactured by Rolex. This movement features the Rolex antimagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring. After receiving a COSC certified chronometer certification, the movement the goes through a thorough in-house chronometric testing once installed into a watch case. Once the watch achieves a precision of -2/+2 seconds per day in the case, it gets a Rolex Superlative Chronometer designation. Even with all these mechanical features, the 31 jewel caliber 4161 movement holds its power for 72 hours.

A guide to the Rolex Yacht-Master

Over the years, the Rolex Yacht-Master watch has grown significantly, becoming one of the most diverse ranges of Rolex watch available.

The evolution of the luxury brand’s classic sports watch has extended beyond imaginable parallels, offering the avid collector various choices in bracelet style, bezel material and case size over three entire decades. As such, the Yacht-Master continues to prove itself a valuable and dependable mainstay within the manufacturer’s current catalogue, despite many models having become discontinued over the years. To define the Yacht-Master by Rolex, one would categorize it as a luxury sports watch, yet the collection can be broken down into two watches that remain incredibly similar to one another, despite a slightly different name.

. One is the Yacht-Master - a watch that can be considered the original sports model designed by Rolex, intended for setting sail with and enjoying whilst sailing aboard a luxury yacht. The Yacht-Master II, however, is designed for more precise functionality. Equipped with all the technology to enable an individual to record regatta timings, this younger distinction of the model is classified as a watch for racing a yacht as opposed to enjoying alongside a ride on one.

Whether wearing a Rolex Yacht-Master for aesthetical or practical reasons, however, its sleek looks and refined qualities are characteristics that are sought after far and wide amongst Rolex fans. Like with every Rolex, however, there are some factors to research and consider before investing in your very first Yacht-Master and these include pricing, history and features amongst many others.

What are the differences between the Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II?

To break down the key differences between the Rolex Yacht-Master and the Rolex Yacht-Master II, here are a few quick facts. The Yacht-Master is available in sizes of 29mm, 35mm, 37mm, 40mm and 42mm and is manufactured in Rolesium, Everose Rolesor, yellow gold Rolesor, solid 18ct yellow gold, solid 18ct white gold and 18ct Everose gold. The watch offers running hours, minutes and seconds and features a date function at 3 o’clock. A bidirectional rotating bezel has a 60-minute scale upon its surface and each model promises a water resistance of 100 meters. The models are offered on an Oyster bracelet or Oysterflex bracelet. The Rolex Yacht-Master II, however, is available in a 44mm size and is offered in a solid stainless steel version, as well as Everose Rolesor, 18ct yellow gold and 18ct white gold. Function-wise, the models offer running seconds with an adjustable countdown timer with a mechanical memory. The watch also features a ring command bezel, along with 100-meter water resistance and is fitted on an Oyster bracelet.

A brief history of the Rolex Yacht-Master watch collection

A brief history of both the Rolex Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II watches is beneficial before investing in a model from this range. Though not introduced until 1992, the Rolex Yacht-Master watch had foundations secured for its release much earlier than that. The brand had partnered with the New York Yacht Club back in 1958, laying down the roots to its heritage in sailing long before the iconic sports watch was conceptualized. By this point, Rolex had ready developed its first waterproof watch thanks to the 1926 Oyster case.

In 1966, the Gipsy Moth IV yacht was sailed 29,600 miles around the world by Francis Chichester, who wore a Rolex on his wrist amongst very few other measuring tools including a sextant and nautical chart. Thanks to the Rolex Oyster Perpetual watch he wore during his journey, time could be tracked amongst rough conditions for an entire 226 days whilst at sea. It put Rolex officially on the radar of seafarers as a manufacturer capable of producing robust and reliable tools for facing the challenging conditions experienced at sea.

In 1992 the world’s first official Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master was released and was crafted entirely from 18ct yellow gold, cementing its status as a luxury tool watch. Over the next 15 years, Rolex would experiment with various case materials until in 2007, the first Yacht-Master II was born. Sportsmen could utilize this tool watch whilst regatta racing – its chronograph features stood out clearly and legibly across the surface of the dial. A programmable countdown timer enabled the individual to measure the countdown time before a race commences for improved precision and a better start to the competition. With flyback and fly-forward functionality, synchronization with the Race Committee was a breeze.

Rolex Yacht-Master ref 126622

As of 2019, Rolex Yacht-Master II watches were equipped with the Calibre 3235 – a trusted workhorse for many of Rolex’s models. Framed inside this striking blue bezel is a white dial adorned with a small second sub-counter in blue at 6 o’clock, along with a countdown that can be programmed for a duration of between 1 and 10 minutes. The programming is memorized by the mechanism so that at a reset it returns to the previous setting and once launched, can be synchronized on the fly to match the official race countdown.

Rolex Yacht-Master ref 116655

The Rolex Yacht-Master ref 116656 is, without a doubt, one of the most coveted and popular models from this series of luxury sports watches. The model not only features a matte black ceramic bezel but features a set of two-textured, highly polished and raised numerals upon its sandblasted surface. The watch is fitted to an Oysterflex bracelet, promising all-round comfort and thanks to its unusual choice of contrasting rich black and luxurious pink gold colours, can be enjoyed by both male and female Rolex fans alike. The Rolex Yacht-Master II is the dominant sports watch model from the Rolex brand. On this review, Eric shows you the different types of Yacht-Master II’s and the functionality and purpose behind the model.

The Yacht-Master II was released by Rolex in 2010. The watch was equipped with Rolex’s new 4161 movement and featured Rolex’s Ring Command bezel for the first time, which is a main component behind the countdown timer functionality of the model.

At 44mm, the Yacht-Master II is tied with the Deepsea as the largest watch of the Rolex brand. Unfortunately, the Deepsea tends to be a lot taller than the Yacht-Master II , making the Deepsea look a lot more conspicuous on a man’s wrist.

The YM2 also features an Oyster bracelet with an Oysterlock clasp.

Is the Yacht-Master II a Chrono?

Many people mistake the Rolex Yacht-Master II for a chronograph, but it isn’t. It simply has a 10-minute countdown timer that is popular in regatta races.

On the video, you will see how the boating race timer is set and how it counts down. The timer can actually be set to count down from 10 minutes or less; 9 minutes, 8 minutes, etc.

For Eric, the size of the watch, the white dial-blue bezel combination, and its overall balanced look makes it the perfect sports model and definitely one that belongs in the arsenal of any serious watch collector.

The only thing Eric does not like from the Rolex Yacht-Master II design, even though he’s gotten more used to it throughout the years, is the way Rolex inscribes the actual model name on the bezel. This was too much of a commercialized moved by the Swiss watchmaker in Eric’s opinion.

Yacht-Master II Variations and Prices

The Rolex Yacht-Master II is available in yellow gold, two-tone, and stainless steel. Good prices for these variations (when the video was released on October 2015) are $28,500, $18,500 and $13,500 respectively.

The price of a new Rolex Yacht-Master II will be around $2,000 more than the above (circa video release date).

Eric’s favorite variation of the YM2 timepiece is the stainless steel version.

As far as the Watch Game is concerned, the Yacht-Master II is the perfect watch to take out on a boat or beach event; that is, if you want to make heads turn. It’s definitely a serious piece in Eric’s book!

Review: Rolex Yacht-Master II Ref. 116680 2017 Edition

Among the hard core Rolex collectors, lies a quiet discontent. One watch polarises the community like no other Rolex ever has. It is big. It is bold. It screams its model name in your face in huge text on the bezel. It carries the same reference number as the watch it replaces. And yet, like the other Rolex professional watches, it is born out of a professional need. That of the skipper of a yacht. This is the Rolex Yacht-Master II. The programmable regatta countdown flyback chronograph from Rolex. We took a close look at it, examine its  raison d’être , and give you the plain verdict: Awesome or not. Read to discover!

The Rolex Yacht-Master II

The Yacht-Master II occupies a place within the Rolex hierarchy of professional watches.  This is a special category of watches that Rolex designs and intends for use in a specific profession. The Submariner and Sea Dweller  were designed for professional diving, initially developed with diving specialists COMEX. The Explorer was developed with explorers to summit Everest, the GMT series for PanAm pilots. The Daytona Cosmograph was derived for use on the race track, though when it first appeared in 1960, it was merely labelled Chronograph, but was quickly nicknamed the Daytona, after the famous race circuit.

The Yacht-Master first introduced in 1992 as a Ref. 16628 in yellow gold is a curiosity. It is not a professional yachting watch, but a Submariner with stronger aesthetics and made with more premium case and bracelet materials. The Yacht-Master was only available in precious metals.

The Rolex Yacht-Master II. This is the earlier model, first introduced in 2007, and later revised with a new movement in 2013. The overall look remained the same till 2017. Note the differences, which will be discussed in the section Dial, Case, Hands below.

Based on the success of the Yacht-Master, Rolex unveiled the Yacht-Master II in 2007 . This is a totally different kettle of fish. This is a true professional yachting watch incorporating a flyback chronograph and a programmable countdown timer. Two models made the debut lineup, a yellow gold Ref. 116688 and a white gold Ref . 116689. Both are professional regatta watches and equipped with the new manufacture caliber 4160. This new movement was derived from the then new in-house caliber 4130 used in the Daytona Cosmograph. To the 4130 base, Rolex added the additional features to make the 4160 the first watch in the world to be equipped with a programmable countdown function from 1 to 10 minutes with a mechanical memory.

For Baselworld 2013 , Rolex released a stainless steel version, the Ref. 116680 which featured an upgraded movement in the form of the C.4161. It remains unclear what changes were made to the movement, but we expect this to be routine upgrades to improve chronometry and serviceability.

And for Baselworld 2017, the Yacht-Master II was revised yet again. The updates were mainly dial side aesthetic changes, but the C.4161 now gains Rolex Chronometer Certification. The 2017 Editions were released in stainless steel, yellow gold, white gold and platinum. Curiously, Rolex chose to retain the reference numbers, and used 116680 for the new 2017 Edition of the Yacht-Master II in stainless steel.

The dial, case and hands

The case is the standard Rolex Oyster case, but much larger with a 44mm case diameter. The review sample was in 904L stainless steel. The case is water resistant to 100m, and is equipped with a Triplock crown. Interestingly the pushers for the chronograph is not screw down, despite the Triplock capabilities of the crown. Perhaps this is not a real concern, as the depth rating is only 10 atm.

The bracelet is also in solid 904L steel, with the Oysterlock clasp with the usual 5mm comfort extension built in. Rolex has retained the same case shape and dimension since the 2007 introduction. The case and bracelet is solidly built, as one would expect from Rolex.

The watch features a Cerachrom, Rolex-speak for ceramic, bezel in a mesmerisingly beautiful blue shade. This bezel is not changed since its introduction in 2007, and carries the countdown numbers of 0-10 in huge arabic numerals. And the name “Yacht-Master II” screaming out loud at 4 to 8 o’clock position. Normally, this author would find this screaming announcement to be a aesthetic disaster, but somehow, in this huge case, coupled with the calming blue hue and the bold graphics, it seem to be quite in character. Acquiring a strong, masculine persona . And yes, we say it, it is a rather handsome watch .

The Rolex Yacht-Master II has a large case, measuring 44mm in diameter and a huge Cerachrom bexel in an amazing shade of mesmerising blue.

The main difference between Ref. 116680 (2013) and Ref. 116680 (2017) dials are as follows:

• most visibly, the hour minute hands on the 2017 edition have changed from slim hands to larger ones. The minute hand is skeletonised, and the hour hand carries the iconic “Mercedes” hands.
• an inverted triangle now marks the 12 o’clock hour marker and a rectangle marks the 6 o’clock in the new version, where the old one had square markers all round.

And that’s all! The bezel remains the same. The other graphic elements remains the same. The main dial remains in white lacquer, and the markings in blue. The hour markers are filled with blue Chromalight.

Legibility of the time, and all functions work well. This is critical in a professional race watch, as the heat of the race often gets the better of one, and it is easy to be confused and mis-read critical information.

The difference between the 2007 and 2017 version is in the hands which are enlarged to carry the signature Mercedes hands, and the hour markers which now feature an inverted triangle at 12 and a rectangle at 6.

Regatta Timing

The purpose of a regatta chronograph is not only to track racing time but also to count down the critical minutes before the racers cross the starting line. This is because, unlike an automobile, the yacht is not able to do a standing start. The yachts will have been already moving when they cross the starting line.

The “Fleet Race”, which takes place on a course marked by buoys, begins with a five, seven or ten-minute countdown at the end of which the yachts begin sailing the course. This countdown is pre-determined by race officials. During this decisive interval of time, the competitors strategically array themselves on the startling line – based on winds and, most importantly, keeping clear of other competitors – in order to cross the line as close as possible to the starting signal. It is the skipper’s role to ensure that his yacht will cross the start line as soon as possible after the starting signal to ensure a head start, but also not to cross the line before the signal to avoid penalty points.

A good start determines the success in this test of skill, tactics and technical expertise. And the standard regatta watch will not only have to be tough enough to withstand the rigours of racing, and the water, but also perform the countdown, and chronograph timing.

The Yacht-Master II retains excellent functionality for a complex countdown sequence required of a regatta timer. But is also useful for more mundane tasks like timing for cooking pasta, egg, or even hand pulling an espresso.

The Yacht-Master II regatta countdown

When it was first introduced in 2007, the Yacht-Master II was the only chronograph with a programmable countdown function. This is implemented by the use of the bezel, which is not a diving bezel, but is bi-directional. Rolex calls this the Command Ring. To activate the setting of the countdown function, the bezel is turned 90° counter clockwise. Then the pusher at 4 o’clock is depressed. The crown is then unscrewed, and pulled into its first position. Now the countdown hand, with the red triangle can be set as desired. It is set by moving the crown in one direction, which moves the hand in one minute intervals forwards. The hand retrogrades back to 10 after going past 0. Once the desired time is set, the crown is pushed back, screwed down, and the bezel returned to the “home” position. And the regatta timer is ready.

At the sound of the first gun, the skipper starts the chronograph as per normal. This begins the countdown function. As the chronograph is a flyback, he can reset the countdown at any time by depressing the pusher at 4 o’clock.  This is necessary if the skipper needs to re-synchronize his watch to race time.

The flyback works also to reset the countdown hand to the nearest minute. That is, for the first half of the minute it will retrograde back, and for the second half it will forward to the nearest minute. This feature is useful in regatta timing, as the second gun can sound for the race to begin,

Once the chronograph is stopped and reset, the countdown hand returns to its pre-programmed position, ready for the next race.

The setting function for the countdown chronograph is activated by twisting the bezel quarter turn clockwise. And set by a push of the pusher at 4 and the crown in a pulled out position. Once set, it operates seamlessly.

The movement

The movement is the Rolex in-house manufactured 4161, which is based on the Rolex 4130 used in the Daytona. The original Yacht-Master II had the 4060 movement, which was updated in 2013 to the 4161. In its latest iteration, the C.4161 carries additional minor modifications to meet the Rolex chronometer specifications of +/-2 seconds a day.

As is usual for Rolex, there is no display back, and the movement is not visible. We did not open the case back to view the movement. But we did see the movement out of its case in Baselworld, The photograph above is a stock pic from Rolex, and shows the movement. The chronograph features an integrated column wheel with a vertical clutch engagement.

Finishing is up to the usual Rolex specifications. Very well executed engineering level finish with no extraneous decorations. The movement is a proven to have been a robust one, with good chronometry capabilities. It is certified to both Rolex Chronometer Certification as well as COSC standards. The standard Rolex innovations of the Paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring is fitted.

The competitive landscape

In recent years, the competitive landscape (or seascape) has started to be quite well populated. When Rolex introduced the Yacht-Master II in 2007, it was probably the first with the regatta countdown feature. In our current non-exhaustive survey, we include the following which we feel are interesting alternatives. At S$25,120 with GST, the Yacht-Master II in SS is reasonable value and compares well with the competition.

Ulysse Nardin Marine Regatta  (S$ 24,500 with GST) is perhaps the best place to start. The UN features a world premiere of a bi-directional chronograph hand which automatically switches to countdown to count-up. This on itself is an interesting complication, requiring some 650 component in the in-house UN-155,caliber. The UN has a longer power reserve of 3 days.

Bremont Regatta   (S$9,000 with GST) is a more modestly priced competitor. It is a highly technical watch from Bremont, and lends much of its technology, mostly in materials, from the F1 and aerospace industry. The Bremont is a more regular chronograph dial with many sub-dials, which may tend to be a bit confusing in the melee of a race.

Omega Seamaster Diver 300M ETNZ (S$ 10,100 incl GST). The case is also in titanium with a ceramic bezel. The movement is quite advanced, featuring an in-house column wheel chronograph Omega C.3300 with Co-Axial escapement and a silicon balance spring. The watch is rated to a depth rating of 300m, while the Rolext is only rated to 100m. The Omega case is also 44mm, and it features a non programmable 5 minute countdown system incorporated into the 30 minute totalizer at 3 o’clock.

Maurice Lacroix Pantos S Regatta ( € 6,990 which converts to approximately S$10.700). The Maurice Lacroix is housed in a forged carbon fibre cage, and is rated to 200m. The movement is quoted as ML162, and we are not able to confirm the source of the base movement. The case is 45mm diameter so larger compared to the others. However, instead of 5 minute count down and 15 minute counters, it features a huge aperture on its dial revealing a rotating disc showing a count down from 10 minutes. This is shown as blue markers indicating “Ready” to 6 and then 5-0 section marked in red. At the 0, the pointer in the aperture indicates “Race”.

What the Yacht-Master II has going for it is the effortless way to set the programming for the countdown via the Command Ring. And also the fact that as it is a Rolex, resale prices would remain higher than its competition.

Concluding thoughts

As we hinted earlier in the review, we were prepared not to like the watch. It is large. It featured screamingly bold graphics. It seems rather expensive for a sports chronograph.

But as we got used to the watch, it is quite attractive. Very masculine, as we mentioned. The functionality is intuitive once one learns it, and it works flawlessly . The chronometry is excellent. And the wrist presence is quite imposing, though not in a negative way, but rather ascribes some gravitas to the wearer. The colour scheme of blue and white with accents of red, coupled with a clean dial sans sub-dials is outstanding in making it clear and legible. It has many things going for it. And eventually we succumb and fall in love with the Rolex Yacht-Master II .

On the wrist, the Yacht-Master II sits rather comfortably, even under the cuffs of a shirt and suit. It looks comfortably at home in this formal environment as it would on board a race yacht in the seas.

Hands-On – The Updated Rolex Yacht-Master II (and a look back at its great features)

Using the term ‘update’ when describing the “new” Rolex Yacht-Master II is almost an exercise in irony, as the changes made by the “Crown” to its Regatta watch are minimal. However, the reality is that we indeed have a new iteration of this niche model, although there has been no change to its reference number ( Ref. 116680 for the steel version ). Sounds like a good opportunity to look back at the Yacht-Master II and its great functionality.

The Updated Rolex Yacht-Master II

To keep things brief, the update concerns the dial only. In fact, details of the dial. The main objective of Rolex was to increase the legibility of this professional watch, in order to make sure that no confusion can possibly arise – and probably give it a bit more of Rolex DNA. For that, the dial of the Rolex Yacht-Master II now features a triangular hour marker at 12 o’clock and a rectangular hour marker at 6 o’clock for more intuitive reading of the watch – instead of square markers all around the dial. 12 and 6 markers are now clearly distinguished from the rest of the dial.

The hands have also been updated. Before this facelift, the YM II featured rather thin baton hands (blued on the steel version, or matching the case on gold versions) with a splash of luminescent material. As of 2017, the Yacht-Master will rely on the iconic “Mercedes” hand for the hour, with a large luminescent disc, clearly distinguishing it from the minute hand -which is still a baton shape, however it now features a cut-out section so as not to obstruct the view of the Regatta countdown. This configuration is available for all Yacht-Master II models: in steel (Ref. 116680), in Everose Rolesor version combining steel and 18k Everose gold (Ref. 116681), in 18k yellow gold (ref. 116688) and in 18k white gold with platinum bezel (Ref. 116689).

For the rest, the Rolex Yacht-Master II remains unchanged. It still relies on its 44mm case water-resistant to 100m, an Oyster bracelet with Oysterlock folding safety clasp and Easylink 5mm comfort extension link (the center link of the bracelet remains polished, while the rest is satin-finished), a Triplock winding crown, protected by a crown guard that is an integral part of the middle case, screwed caseback (plain, no sapphire crystal) and a blue ceramic bezel with platinum- or gold-PVD numerals and inscriptions (with the exception of the white gold version, which keeps it sold platinum bezel).

Inside, is the impressive calibre 4161, a mechanical chronograph movement with column wheel and vertical clutch exclusive to the Rolex Yacht-Master II ( very different from the 4130 of the Daytona ), with automatic winding in both directions, 72-hour power reserve, antimagnetic Parachrom hairspring and large balance wheel with variable inertia. This complex movement is, as is every Rolex calibre, certified as a  Superlative Chronometer,  having satisfied a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria, which exceed the COSC standards and which applies to the fully assembled watch, after casing the movement. This results in a a -2/+2 sec/day accuracy and a 5-year warranty.

The Rolex Yacht-Master II in Action

The Rolex Yacht-Master II is a chronograph, however a very special type of chronograph, also called a Regatta watch or a Skipper watch. Indeed, don’t expect it to measure intervals of time, like most chronographs. For that, you should take a look at the iconic Daytona , a watch made to measure speeds (or anything else from one instant of time to another). The YM II is different. It features a programmable countdown with a mechanical memory that can be synchronized on the fly. This watch, as we said in the intro, is very niche , answering to the specific needs for precise timing during the crucial starting sequence of a regatta.

While this might sound complex at first, and while the display of its dial is rather unique, the Rolex Yacht-Master II is, on the contrary, an extremely intuitive watch. This watch is all about man / machine interaction and natural use of the commands, thanks to one clever feature, the “ Ring Command Bezel ” (which is now also used in the Sky-Dweller ) and refers to a bezel that is not there to keep track of events but is integrated in the chain of actions and interacts directly with the movement.

Because the crown and the two pushers were already utilized to set time / wind the movement or act on the start / reset of the chronograph functions, Rolex had to imagine a new way to set the countdown, without adding a third pusher on the case (which in Rolex’s minds would have been heresy). The idea was to create a bezel that interacts with the movement. Rotating the bezel 90° gives access to the programming function of the countdown duration, which is set via the winding crown. Turning the Ring Command bezel back in the other direction then locks and memorizes the programming.

How does it work in real life – or at least during a regatta? Unlike racing cars, regatta boats can’t stand immobile on a starting line. Thus, they sail around the starting line, waiting for the departure, which means it’s crucial to know the exact moment of the departure. The starting procedure of a regatta generally unfolds in three stages, marked by sound and visual signals. This preparatory phase lasts from 5 to 10 minutes according to the type of regatta. This where you start to use the Rolex Yacht-Master II for what it is.

The procedure in details:

• Phase 1 – programming – The skipper programmes a countdown duration of up to 10 minutes on his Yacht-Master II according to the regatta rules. For that, he just needs to rotate the bezel 90 degrees, set the right duration with the crown and the central red arrow hand on the dial will position to the right timing. Once programmed, the countdown duration is mechanically memorized so that when the countdown is reset, it automatically keeps exactly the same setting. Rotating the bezel back to its initial position locks and memorizes the programming.
• Phase 2 – launching the countdown – a gun shot and a flag signal the start of the regatta countdown. The skipper launches the countdown by pressing the pusher at 2. The centre seconds hand starts running and indicates elapsed seconds in the same way as a traditional chronograph. The red arrow hand indicates the remaining minutes on the 10- to 0-minute countdown scale on the dial.
• Phase 3 – Synchronization – Race officials give a first preparatory signal by firing the gun a second time and hoisting another flag. The skipper has an opportunity to synchronize the watch countdown with the official countdown – to make sure his timing session is precise . For that, he’ll just have to press the pusher at 4 that acts like a flyback. The second hand (and only that hand, the countdown hand still runs) reset on the fly and it runs again as soon as the pusher is released. The countdown minute hand is automatically synchronized to the nearest minute to compensate for any premature or delayed launch of the chronograph at the first signal.
• Phase 4 – Synchronization 2, one minute before the start – A second preparatory signal is given with a blast of a horn, and the lowering of a flag. The skipper can check at a glance that the countdown of the Yacht-Master II is properly synchronized with the official timing.
• Phase 5 – start of the race – A last gun shot and lowering of a flag indicates the start of the race. If the skipper managed to use the Yacht-Master II correctly, it will accurately indicate the departure time to the closest second. With this, he or she will benefit from the advantage of knowing exactly what time the race has officially started.

As you’ve seen, the Rolex Yacht-Master II is a complex watch, with a proper purpose-built concept behind it. Of course, it shouldn’t be reduced just to the regatta use, however this function remains very restricted outside of this context. The Yacht-Master II is a often seen as a statement watch, as the largest proposition in the catalogue (together with the Deep-Sea), with the exclusivity of being available in various materials, including precious ones. The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
