Get Carried Back to the Beach on a Sea Glass Mosaic Sailboat

By Jackie Trimper

Have you ever asked yourself, “What am I going to do with all this sea glass?” Well, have I got a solution for you. Here is all you need to know to create a sea glass mosaic sailboat to display some of your sea glass and showcase some of your favorite beach treasures.

I have found that working with sea glass to create art serves a purpose for my sea glass and results in a beautiful way to display it as it hangs in the window with the sunlight shining through. Those little pieces of glass that have been collected along the shoreline can instantly return me to the feeling of calm and peace that being at the beach always brings to me. And so it is that handling and sorting sea glass, working on a sea glass mosaic, or looking at the completed mosaics has tremendous power to transport me back to the beach and bring back that “beach feeling” once again.

As I walk along the beach and look out over the water, seeing the clean crisp edges of a sail can evoke a feeling of adventure and carry me away as I can imagine myself floating upon the top of the water. Whenever I see pictures of sailboats, I get that same feeling of calm that comes with being at the beach and dreaming of being carried over the water to far away places. I am therefore drawn to creating sailboats with my sea glass. It is common for glass to be broken in triangular shapes and so often when I pick up a triangular piece of sea glass on the beach, I imagine it to be the sail of a boat out on the water.

So…take a look in your collection of sea glass and other beach treasures and pick out a few pieces you would like to showcase in a sea glass mosaic art piece.

sea glass mosaic supplies

1. 8" x 10" picture frame with glass. I prefer to recycle old frames, but you can use a new one if you prefer.

2. Small tube of clear silicone. See insert on why I use clear silicone for an adhesive.

3. Sea glass: a mixture of green for the water, white for the sky, and brown for the boat.

4. Some special pieces of sea glass you want to showcase. Each finished mosaic is a one of a kind piece of art because of the special pieces you decide to use in your mosaic.

5. Wooden skewers: small toothpicks or BBQ skewers.

6. Paper and pencil for pattern.

7. Hanging hardware.

Prepare your frame by removing the backing and attaching the glass into the frame by inserting the glass and applying a small bead of clear silicone around the edges of the glass on the back. Allow the silicone to set overnight before beginning your art piece.

Sort your sea glass by color and size. Choose some special pieces that you want to showcase to include in the sails. As well, set aside two triangle shapes and two long shapes to make two small sailboats in the background.

sea glass mosaic pattern in frame

Draw the pattern of a sailboat on a piece of 8" x 10" paper and tape the pattern to the back of the glass in the frame. Be sure that the line you create on the horizon is straight and at a 90-degree angle with the edge of the frame. The horizon line over water is always straight in nature.

beach glass mosaic step-by-step

Arrange the special pieces you want to showcase in the sail of the sailboat and fill in the remaining area of the two sails and the boat with brown sea glass. To attach the sea glass pieces, apply a small bit of silicone to the back of each piece of sea glass. It will take some time to set so you have time to move pieces around. Add in the two background sailboats where you would like them.

add glass to sea glass mosaic

Using the silicone, attach green sea glass for the water. Arrange the sea glass so there are small pieces of green on the horizon line, with the pieces getting larger as you move towards the bottom of the frame. This helps to give the impression of distance in the water.

sailboat beach glass mosaic sky

Attach white sea glass for the sky. I like to include shades of aqua, sea foam, and pale pastels to add interest to the sky. I also arrange some of the pieces in flowing lines so that the sky appears more dynamic.

Give your mosaic a few days for the silicone to fully set. If you used silicone that is white, you will know it is set when it has dried clear. Attach hanging hardware. I prefer to hang my sea glass mosaics in a window where the changing light of the day brings it to life and provides an ever-changing look to the mosaic.

  • I prefer to leave to some space between the individual pieces of sea glass. Your eye will fill in the gaps if the pieces are fairly evenly spaced, creating a good “mosaic effect.”
  • Work slowly to ensure you find just the right pieces that work well with each other. It is best to have a large pile of pieces to pick from so you can find pieces that “fit together like a puzzle.”
  • Use the wooden skewers and toothpicks to clean off any excess silicone before it dries to make your finished piece look neater.
  • Take your time because the longer it takes you to complete your piece of art, the more hours of relaxation you will have while playing with your sea glass.

After completing this small sea glass mosaic sailboat, you will have the skills you need to complete sea glass mosaic designs as large and as complex as your imagination, your sea glass collection, and your time permits. You could try a sailboat as large as this one completed on a 27.5" x 29.5" antique window that came out of a Nova Scotia farmhouse. I call this one Sailboat Regatta . On a piece this big, there is lots of room to add interesting details and showcase even more special sea glass pieces and other beach treasures.

Every time you look at your piece of art it will take you back to the beach and return you to that feeling of peace and calm that you get every time you go to the beach.

Love the magazine. I get inspired by the articles to create works of art

Been combing for beach glass and sea glass for 5 years or so. Found a community on Facebook to help find beaches when traveling, wanted to learn more about the hobby, the finds, and the community - this magazine was perfect for that! Happy that last issues are available digitally too!

Love the Colors but got distracted and only ordered 1! Now I am going back for the Front plate to quit complaining. These are just Fun and give you great bragging rights.

I got 2 to put one on my Tote Bag and the other for my crossbody Purse. I changed out the blue plastic loop with a Stainless Steel Cable Wire Key Chain in colors! Already got compliments, so I have to going back for a couple more for my luggage. Highly recommend.

The poster is just what I wanted. Vivid colors also.

Very nice journal. Looking forward to using it on my sea glass hunting vacation this spring!

See more Sea Glass by Sue here  👈

Sea Glass by Sue is made by – you guessed it – Sue! Sue and her family have lived in Maine for over 25 years. Her  sea glas s collection is handmade in Kennebunk, Maine. Each p iece of se a glass is naturally surf tumbled and created with sterling silver to create beautiful pieces of jewelry such as this Sea Glass with Sailboat Charm Necklace.

Sea glass is made from glass that has been broken in the ocean and washed and tumbled back onto the coast. Whether it be sandy or rocky beach the sea glass pieces are smoothed using the natural materials of the earth, creating smooth, translucent pieces of glass. No two pieces of sea glass are ever identical.

Sterling silver chains don beautiful pieces of sea glass often by themselves and otherwise complimented by a freshwater pearl or a sterling silver anchor or sailboat charm. Occasionally a pair of matching earrings comes in but it  is becoming harder to find every day. In a positive light this is hopefully the result of a decrease in littering and instead, an act of preserving our environment. And to those who continue the search for these little gems, good luck and enjoy the challenge.

More Sea Glass Mosaics:

Love your project! Did you pour resin over it after you glued pieces to glass? Want to make one in memory of my grandmother who always spent time with me searching for treasures on the beach.

This is one of the best gifts that you can gift to them. Best. Mary and Justin must be so happy about this right. That sail boat is awesome in look. The classy design make it more attractive. You are great Mona.
Oct 16, 2011

Has anyone tried gluing to glass or plexi with hot glue? Does it turn yellow or fall off or anything?
Aug 11, 2011

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. The sailboat was actually done on real glass and not plexiglass. My husband makes the frames for me. The glass does not have to be all the same thickness. Yes the glue will show lightly on the back. I hope this helps.
Jun 20, 2011

Our whole family loves finding beach glass, and we have quite a bit. My 10 year old daughter is looking for a 4-H fair craft project and wanted to use her beach glass. We saw your sail boat and fell in love with the idea. I noticed you use plexiglass and not glass, which is perfect, as she can't use glass for the fair. Might you share your knowledge with us? Did you build your own frame? Do the glass pieces need to be the same thickness? Does the glue show? Do you glue the glass on both sides?
Sorry, I'm full of questions! It is so beautiful! I'd love to see what she might come up with!
Thanks,
Barb

How to Drill Sea Glass for a Pendant

How to Drill Sea Glass for a Pendant

Making a pendant out of sea glass is a great way to turn your beach vacation memories into something special. It’s a fun and creative DIY project that’s sure to make your friends and family jealous.

The first step is to find some sea glass. If you haven’t been to the beach lately, you can purchase sea glass online or at craft stores. Once you have your sea glass, you’ll need to clean it. This can be done with a soft brush and some warm soapy water.

The next step is to drill a hole in the sea glass. This is best done with a diamond drill bit, which can be purchased at most hardware stores. It’s important to use the correct drill bit, as sea glass is very hard and can easily break if the wrong bit is used.

Once the hole is drilled, you’ll need to attach a bail or jump ring to the sea glass. This is the metal loop that will hold the pendant in place. You can find these at craft stores or online.

The end result will be both a functional furniture piece and a personalized work of art .

Love sea glass? These are some of the best beaches to hunt for it on Cape Cod

When it comes to going to the beach, many people enjoy sitting around, swimming, soaking up the sun, reading a book or lounging around.

But for many years, beach-goers have turned into hunters when it comes to finding shells and sea glass.

You know. Sea glass. It's the glass that you find near the water or buried in the sand that's been weathered and worn by the ocean, taking on a gem-like appearance.

It's becoming more rare as the use of plastic has grown, but it's still out there. Here's what to know if you're on the hunt.

What is sea glass?

Sea glass refers "to the small pieces of glass that are typically found on beaches along bays, seas and oceans, but they can also be found on the banks of large rivers," according to Science ABC. It typically started as glass bottles or other household glass items that were tossed into the sea, either on purpose or by mistake.

The glass is weathered physically and chemically due to the "constant tumbling action of waves over an extended period of time." It can take 30 to 100 years for the glass to take on that jewel-like quality.

Some colors are harder to find than others. While browns, whites and greens are pretty common, according to the  sea glass rarity chart from realseaglass.com , the “ultra rare” colors include multi-colored pieces, orange, yellow, red, turquoise and teal.

What is beach glass? Is it the same as sea glass?

There's also beach glass, which while the two terms are often used interchangeably, is different.

Beach glass forms in fresh water, rather than salt water. It's appearance is less frosty than sea glass.

How rare is seaglass?

It's getting more so. More drinks and other household products were packaged in glass year ago, which created more opportunities for glass to start its journey to becoming sea glass. With the switch to plastics, it's becoming harder, but not impossible to find.

Where can you find sea glass on Cape Cod?

Sea glass can show up on any beach, but some have a higher success rate than others. Some of the best Cape Cod beaches to look for sea glass, according to one of our Cape Cast videos, are the following:

Menauhant Beach:  With nice sand and medium sized wave, this beach is excellent for people looking to find rocks, shells, and sea glass. Menauhant Road, Falmouth.

Bristol Beach:  On the same road as Menauhant Beach, it has the same warm gentle water with sand that is perfect for catching treasures the waves toss on shore. Menauhant Road, Falmouth.

Bayview Beach:  With big flats at low ties and nice sand, this beach is one of the better ones for finding sea glass. Bayview Road, Dennis.

Skaket Beach:  Another beach with a great low tide, this one is has find sand that helps to craddle shells and sea glass that wash up. 200 Skaket Beach Road, Orleans.

Love sea glass? This Jersey Shore beach is known for its collection

Portrait of J. Staas Haught

One Jersey Shore beach beckons sea glass hunters from all over. Bay Head Beach has earned a reputation as a must-visit for anyone dedicated to rounding up wave-weathered stones.

Sea glass originates from bottles, jars, and other bits of glass in the ocean.

Time and nature team up to smooth the pieces and polish them to a frosted appearance.

Sea glass hunters collect these pieces along the water’s edge, mixed in with sea grass and other ocean detritus. Some simply hold on to their finds; others turn them into jewelry or decorations.

But what makes Bay Head Beach a  hot spot for sea glass?

Sea glass at Bay Head Beach

Beach Lust, a website dedicated to hunting for sea glass, calls Bay Head Beach a “sea glass paradise.”

Here’s some of what contributes to Bay Head Beach’s abundance of sea glass:

Wave action: The waves at Bay Head Beach tumble and smooth broken glass pieces, turning them into sea glass over time.

Past use: Historically, the area around Bay Head has had settlements and recreational activities that contributed to the presence of glass in the water, which eventually becomes sea glass.

Location, location, location: The beach’s geography, including its currents and coastal features, contributes to the accumulation and retention of sea glass along its shores.

Accessibility: Bay Head Beach is accessible and frequented by collectors, making it a popular spot for sea glass hunting.

Superstorm Sandy: The 2012 storm’s waves and strong currents helped stir up the sea floor along the Jersey Shore, redistributing old glass and other debris. Some of the freshly disturbed glass eventually washed ashore as sea glass in places like Bay Head Beach, already predisposed to collecting ocean deposits.

Where is Bay Head Beach?

Bay Head Beach is in Ocean County, New Jersey, near other well-known Jersey Shore destinations such as Point Pleasant Beach to the north and Mantoloking to the south.
