Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

For the electrical system, SeaMaster boats are equipped with state-of-the-art components to ensure hassle-free and reliable operation. This includes modern navigation systems, communication equipment, and lighting.

Regarding water capacity , most SeaMaster boats come with fresh water tanks that can hold between 50 to 200 gallons, depending on the size and model.

The forepeak usually contains a private cabin with an ensuite shower , while the main area consists of a comfortable saloon with a table for dining. The cabin sole is often crafted from teak or other high-quality materials, providing a warm, elegant ambiance.

Finally, to ensure a comfortable onboard experience, SeaMaster boats usually come equipped with Eberspacher diesel heating systems. These systems provide consistent heating throughout the vessel, making them an excellent option for boating enthusiasts who sail in colder climates.

Yes it has a Yanmar inboard but will it sit on a swinging drying mooring? Regards

£1600 wouldnt buy a new GM10

After the engine, make sure the keel moves freely. Check the lifting mechanism carefully, lifting keels are a bugger to sort out for a newbie. Also look for cracks in the gelcoat around chainplates and deck fixings. Crazing is to be expected but anything bigger needs investigation. The exhaust elbow on IGM10's is a known weakness and any salt water leaks at the inlet finds its way into the head, causing sometimes fatal corrosion in between the exhaust port and the waterways. Caught early enough, it's fixable but not cheaply. New Cylinder heads are extortionate and if you need one, you'll need to replace the valves, guides etc.

many thanks for your replies. I was mistaken the boat has an 8 year old Beta diesel so should be OK. As I have a drying mooring I am concerned as to how it would sit on the sand/mud. Regards

The Seamaster 23 I know of is basically a copy / rip off of the Westerly Pageant; so I'd be surprised if it didn't have twin keels, as the vast majority of Pageants had. The very first Pageant no. 1 was based at my club, called ' L GEE ' after the designer Laurent Giles, owned by the late Dennis Warren - aircraft designer on the Hawk and Harrier, before that the Gnat and Fairey Delta 2 ' faster than the sun ' project, first aircraft to sustain over 1000 mph.

VicS said: A Seamaster Sailer 23 ? A Seamaster 23 is a mobo A Laurent Giles design and very similar to their Westerly Pageant. Probably not as "desirable" as an almost identical boat carrying the Westerly brand name. There was one in the yard near.. The keel got stuck but someone with more brawn and a bigger hammer than the owner soon sorted it out. Most important thing to check out is that it has a decent modern inboard diesel engine ... If it has I'd think it's a steal at £1600. If it hasn't you might be looking at fitting an outboard Click to expand...
Seajet said: " A Seamaster 23 is a mobo " led me to think you didn't know the boat. It would be interesting to know the actual dates these boats were first made; just as the Colvics tried to imitate later Westerlys, like the 33/ Countess. Click to expand...

The Seamaster 23 is a great little starter cruising yacht and is suitable for single handed sailing or indeed the whole family, also being the bilge keel model, she can take the ground not requiring a deep-water marina. The owner removed the ageing inboard engine in 2016 then decided to fit a brand new Tohatsu 4 stroke 9.8hp outboard motor which has only covered about 5hrs to date. She is priced to sell as the owner now finds his workload does not allow him the time to use her so early viewing is recommended.

Seamaster were again very helpful

Seamaster were again very helpful. We were looking at the Cyclades and I mentioned that my wife is not great in rough waters and we had two friends who haven't sailed before. Seamaster suggested that we sail from Lavrion so that we had the choice of sailing west to the Saronic Islands if the winds were too strong. They also recommended trying the 4.1 Bali rather than the Lagoon 45 as the interior was more modern. It was a great Cat except for the reefing lines always got caught. Seamaster were fantastic from start to finish.

We booked a 44" yacht from Corfu via Seamaster who act as agents to local yacht charter companies. This is the fourth time we have used Seamaster and find them to be value for money, proactive and deliver a fantastic service providing us with all the necessary information to assist with a smooth yacht charter. Would definitely rebook and use them again.

Sukosan , Croatia

Excellent service. The charter company in Sukosan was professional and friendly with excellent English, with well prepared yachts. The sailing was in force 2-3, sunny and warm with numerous small bays for swimming. What more could one wish for.

Yachting in Croatia

This is the second time we have booked a holiday with Seamaster yachting - the first time from Split and this time from Dubrovnik. Fantastic experience both times. Tim & Will were incredibly helpful when booking and throughout the whole process especially with the covid situation. Yacht was exactly as expected, the skipper was personable, fun and knowledgeable so couldn't have asked for anyone better. We holidayed with another family on another yacht and the whole week was superb from start to finish. No-body wanted to come home. Thoroughly recommend Seamaster to all.

Despite a difficult year with Covid i found Seamaster very helpful and they kept us appraised of the situation in the nervous build up to departure. Greece ground crew were great and very helpful. The boat was quite old but looked after and well equipped and the engine was sweet. It was a good reflection of the price, which was lower than some of the competition.

Top guys and professional approach

Tim and Will are great guys and really knowledgeable. They helped us with organising our sailing trip and managed to get us booked up last minute without delay. No question or request is too much for them and they always deal with it professionally. That's the second time that we have booked through them and will be doing it again in the future. Would thoroughly recommend.

We returned from Greece yesterday…

We returned from Greece yesterday having had a fabulous holiday on the charter yacht Seamaster arranged with Olympic Yachting in Lavrion. We decided to go the Cyclades route and although we had a number of days in port due to the meltemi, we really enjoyed it and felt safe throughout from a Covid perspective. Olympic Yachting were by far the best charter company that we have ever used, and can’t recommend them highly enough. Thank you Seamaster for arranging the charter for us and for supporting our decision to go on holiday in spite of Greece’s amber status.

Sailing Dubrovnik is beautiful - people and food amazing

With the terrible situation the world is facing with Covid-19, we thought that our sailing holiday was out of the question. We were fortunate that our flights and travel restrictions were lifted and the team at Seamaster were helpful and pragmatic, keeping us regularly informed of the ever-changing situation. The yacht charter company were friendly and the yacht in good condition. Sailing Dubrovnik is beautiful - people and food amazing.

From the very first phone call making an enquiry with Seamaster they could not of been more helpful, nothing was to much trouble for them. The sailing area information that got posted out was more than helpful and the last minute phone call wishing me well and any last minute questions was a great touch. From start to finish Seamaster made things very easy and I would definitely recommend them for your yacht charter holiday.

Tim and his team continue to be absolutely spot on. From rescheduling a 2020 charter to 2021, and subsequently rescheduling that at our request, they've kept us fully updated with impartial advice throughout. Thanks for making this all so straightforward from our end - great customer service.

First class service during Coronavirus lockdown

I very rarely leave reviews but this deserves recognition. Seamaster have organised a refund of the balance of my sailing trip and a voucher for the deposit (Greek Government Rules) within 2 days of me asking for them. Given how tough Coronavirus has been on the whole travel industry this is an exemplar on what customer service should be. I have used Seamaster for trips before the crisis and was very happy with thier service in normal times. Highly recommended!

Date of experience : May 06, 2020

Professional and helpful

We have chartered thru Tim and the Seamaster team on several occasions and always had a great experience. The boats have always been very good and the service excellent. This year during the covid disruption they have been very helpful and postponed our trip to next year with no fuss or quibbling. Highly recommended.

Yacht charter Palma Mallorca

Excellent service, all queries answered promptly and very helpful. One thing that needs to be made clear, was the monies to be paid at the actual yacht charters in Mallorca had to be paid in cash euros rather than on a credit card, cleaned me out of euros!!

Date of experience : September 06, 2019

Fantastic from start to finish

Seamaster was fantastic from start to finish. They spent time on the phone discussing different sailing options and locations prior to booking. After we selected our charter, they provided maps, potential routes and useful suggestions. I highly recommend Seamaster Yacht Charter and will use them again next year!

What can I say?

What can I say? Absolute pleasure to deal with Tim and Will. We have booked twice now with Seamaster and will definitly be booking again. Through all of the issues with the pandemic we were regulary kept updated and their knowledge of places is enviable. Get it booked! :)

We would definitely recommend Seamaster…

We would definitely recommend Seamaster Yacht Charter. We received really great advice from the friendly and helpful team when making our booking, which we definitely feel enhanced our holiday. It was our first bare boat charter holiday, so lots of unknowns, but Seamaster made it very easy and therefore all the more enjoyable!

Cruised the beautiful Daimatian Islands from Dubrovnik this year, our fourth charter on the trot with Seamaster. We value their advice and service Next year we intend to cruise in the Kornati Islands and will have no hesitation going back to Tim and Will

Unfortunately our holiday had to be postponed until next year due to the coronavirus epidemic. However, the service we have received from Tim at Seamaster has been first rate. At all times he kept us up to date in a comprehensive fashion and when it became clear that we weren’t going to be able to travel has reorganised our holiday very quickly. Would not hesitate to recommend Seamaster, they really do go the extra mile.

Volos/Sporades April 2022

We spent a week in a Sun Odyssey out of Volos in April 2022 exploring the Thessalian Sporades. We had an absolutely wonderful time. Would totally recommend going here out of season (the Greeks may think it's winter - its plenty warm enough if you're from Northern Europe) as long as you don't mind places being really *really* quiet (although this can also be charming: in one village a lovely lady basically opened the Taverna just for us). The islands themselves are stunning, the anchorages and harbours all dead easy, and the marine park is wonderful. I've done quite a few of these charters now, in Greece and elsewhere, and I think Seamaster were pretty comfortably the best. I was really impressed by the thoroughness at check-in and check-out (we'd managed to ding the keel, and they were very professional about that too). You can also tell the boat was properly looked after (handled really well, and the least smelly toilet I think I've ever had with a rented boat). Would totally recommend them.

  4. SEAMASTER 23 SAILER

Taking into account the size of the boat and limitations imposed if you are considering the centreboard version, Yes, I think it is a good seaboat. I sailed my father-in-laws Seamaster Sailor 23 (CB version) on many occasions during the 1970/1980's and was never worried by a lack of control or her ability to deal with quite rough seas.
