St. Francis Yacht Club

The history of st. francis yacht club  , becoming st. francis, a yacht club in the city, the club buys an island.

With San Francisco summers often foggy, windy and cold, StFYC members started a search for a warmer option in the mid-1950s. In 1958, that destination was secured when a small group of members pooled personal funds and purchased a 21-acre, overgrown island in the Delta for $10,750. Our little slice of heaven on the San Joaquin River, Tinsley Island, was founded. A plaque commemorating those generous visionaries may be found in the lighthouse on Tinsley Island.

WE STARTED SOMETHING BIG

In 1964, St. Francis Yacht Club welcomed eight yachts to the inaugural St. Francis Perpetual Trophy Regatta. Four boats came from Southern California:  Odyssey ,  Kialoa ,  Audacious  and  Kamalii ; and four from Northern California:  Athene ,  Baruna ,  Ocean Queen IV  and  Santana . The regatta was soon nicknamed the “Big Boat Series.” Since then, the Rolex Big Boat Series has earned a reputation as the West Coast’s premier regatta. St. Francis Yacht Club is proud to host hundreds of sailors each September, drawing great sailors from all the great ports of the blue planet to race in our famous front yard.

93 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE...AND COUNTING

People and boats make the sport of yacht racing, and for 90+ years, through members, guests, pros, and generations of kids insisting, "I'm not cold; let me try it again," we've known the best of both.

THE MISSION OF THE ST. FRANCIS YACHT CLUB IS TO SERVE AS THE INSPIRATIONAL CENTER OF BOATING ACTIVITIES REGIONALLY AND A LEADER OF YACHTING INTERNATIONALLY. WE HONOR CAMARADERIE, SPORTSMANSHIP, TRADITION AND THE MARITIME HERITAGE OF SAN FRANCISCO IN A PREMIER YACHTING ENVIRONMENT.

Our App enables the sailors to have the boat´s performance tracked live and to be able to review the performance later on. The app can be complemented by a tracking device that you can have on your boat.

All Systems Go for the 2022 Rolex Big Boat Series, hosted by St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, California

st. francis yacht club san francisco california

If luck is the confluence of preparation and opportunity, the 76 polished teams gathered at St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, California, for the 2022 Rolex Big Boat Series, will forge their own racecourse fortunes when warning guns fire tomorrow morning. The Rolex Big Boat Series, hosted by StFYC September 14-18, 2022, is the West Coast’s most competitive and prestigious sailing event, with perpetual trophies and Rolex rewards for top skippers and crews. To win this world-class regatta, teams need the skills to conjure opportunity in fleets populated with many world-class sailors.

In short: Bring your A-game or prepare to get rolled.

“The Rolex Big Boat Series represents the best of what we do at St. Francis Yacht Club,” says Peter Gilmore, StFYC’s 2022 Commodore and the skipper of the Cal 40 Longboard . “For many StFYC members and West Coast sailors, Rolex Big Boat Series is far more than just a regatta—it’s a major part of their racing season and our shared sailing culture.”

The 2021 Rolex Big Boat Series featured competitive racing, but with strict COVID-19 policies it was a quieter event than the regatta’s previous 55 editions. Not this year: with nearly 1,000 racers converging on San Francisco Bay, and COVID-19 restrictions greatly eased, the 2022 edition of this historic event represents a return to the regatta’s pre-pandemic scale and splendor.

“We’ve got a fantastic fleet, with a lot of familiar names, plus some fresh blood, and we know there’s a lot of pent-up excitement,” says Susan Ruhne, Chair of the Rolex Big Boat Series. “Three years is a long time between restriction-free regattas, and we’re working hard to ensure this year’s Rolex Big Boat Series is more than worth the wait.”

The race committee plans to score seven races, with two races per day for the first three days of racing, followed by a longer Bay Tour course on Sunday. The exception is the Classics class, which races once per day.

Competition will be stiff across all classes, but the 29-strong J/105 fleet is the regatta’s biggest One Design fleet and intensity is high as the J/105 class will soon be holding their North American Championship (September 29-October 2, 2022), also on San Francisco Bay. Always highly competitive, it’s anyone’s game among the J/105 teams competing, including Ryan Simmons’ Blackhawk and Tim Russell’s Ne*Ne . Blackhawk won the J/105 class at RBBS in 2019 and 2021, but Ne*Ne holds national honors.

“Tim Russell and the Ne*Ne crew have been at the top of our fleet since bringing USA 003 to the Bay in 2018, and they have won the season championship every year, including winning the North American championships last year in Annapolis,” says Simmons. “We have a lot of fun racing with and against Ne*Ne . They are phenomenal sailors and fierce competitors, and it's very difficult to beat them.”

The skippers and crews are no strangers to sailing together. “We have a lot of history with Tim,” continues Simmons, adding that, “he was a member of the Blackhawk crew for years and many of our crews have sailed with each other on different boats over the years.”

st. francis yacht club san francisco california

While Blackhawk and Ne*Ne enjoy great camaraderie, things will turn serious once the starting guns sound. As the largest One Design fleet, the J/105s will be competing for StFYC’s Commodore’s Cup, one of five perpetual trophies presented at Sunday’s awards ceremony. The top J/105 skipper will also receive a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner timepiece.

The St. Francis Perpetual Trophy, which was anonymously donated to StFYC in 1966 to encourage competition between large offshore racing yachts, will be presented to the winner of the ORC A class, who will also receive a coveted Rolex watch.

The Atlantic Perpetual Trophy, featuring a ship’s bell from the Transatlantic-record-breaking schooner Atlantic (1905), will be awarded to the winner of the ORC B class, along with a Rolex timepiece.

The Keefe-Kilborn Trophy, established 1976, honors the memory of the late StFYC members Harold Keefe and Ray Kilborn and will go to the winner of the Express 37 class.

The Richard Rheem Perpetual Trophy, which honors the longtime StFYC club member and skipper of Morning Star —the yacht that proudly broke the Transpac course record in 1949 and 1953—will be presented to the winner of the J/88 class.

Finally, a new Yacht Club Trophy, established in 2022, will recognize the three boats from the same club that earn the best cumulative results. To qualify, one boat must be racing in one of the ORC classes, one must be entered in a One Design class and the third boat can be competing in any class.

Irrespective of which trophy or award each class is contending, and provided that Mother Nature cooperates, sailors can expect four days of world-class racing on the country’s best natural sailing amphitheater.

“Every team that finishes all of their races at the Rolex Big Boat Series has done some serious sailing and has accomplished something hard,” says Ruhne, noting that the event is often known for breeze-on conditions that can test the best. “But teams that win their class or an StFYC perpetual trophy can finish up their summer feeling especially proud.”

Racing is set to begin tomorrow, September 15, at 1100 hours, local time.

ABOUT ROLEX

An unrivalled reputation for quality and expertise

Rolex is an integrated and independent Swiss watch manufacture. Headquartered in Geneva, the brand is recognized the world over for its expertise and the quality of its products – symbols of excellence, elegance and prestige. The movements of its Oyster Perpetual and Cellini watches are certified by COSC, then tested in-house for their precision, performance and reliability. The Superlative Chronometer certification, symbolized by the green seal, confirms that each watch has successfully undergone tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria. These are periodically validated by an independent external organization.

The word “Perpetual” is inscribed on every Rolex Oyster watch. But more than just a word on a dial, it is a philosophy that embodies the company’s vision and values. Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of the company, instilled a notion of perpetual excellence that would drive the company forward. This led Rolex to pioneer the development of the wristwatch and numerous major watchmaking innovations, such as the Oyster, the first waterproof wristwatch, launched in 1926, and the Perpetual rotor self-winding mechanism, invented in 1931. In the course of its history, Rolex has registered over 500 patents. At its four sites in Switzerland, the brand designs, develops and produces the majority of its watch components, from the casting of the gold alloys to the machining, crafting, assembly and finishing of the movement, case, dial and bracelet. Furthermore, the brand is actively involved in supporting the arts and culture, sport and exploration, as well as those who are devising solutions to preserve the planet.

ABOUT ROLEX AND YACHTING

A Natural and Supportive Partner

Rolex has always associated with activities driven by passion, excellence, precision and team spirit. Today, Rolex is Title Sponsor of 15 major international events – from leading offshore races such as the annual Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race and the biennial Rolex Fastnet Race, to grand prix competition at the Rolex TP52 World Championship and spectacular gatherings at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup and the Rolex Swan Cup. It also supports the exciting SailGP global championship in which national teams race identical supercharged F50 catamarans on some of the world’s most famous harbours. Rolex’s partnerships with the St. Francis Yacht Club, New York Yacht Club, Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, Royal Ocean Racing Club, Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Yacht Club Italiano and Royal Yacht Squadron, among others, are the foundation of its enduring relationship with this dynamic sport.

505 World Championship coming to USA

Published on April 13th, 2023 by Editor -->

The 5O5 Class Championships in 2023 will be hosted by St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, California. The two-day 5O5 Pre-Worlds and North American Championship will be on September 23-24. The 5O5 World Championship will be sailed September 26 through October 1, with five days of racing plus one lay day for a total of six days.

Initially slated to be held in Santa Cruz, CA, the event was moved due to damage from the winter storms which impacted harbor access.

“There is no boat like a Five-O,” said said Beau Vrolyk, 2023 Commodore of St. Francis Yacht Club. “The extraordinary levels of skill in the fleet, and the tremendous camaraderie, make this one of our favorite fleets. Our Race Committee has been testing course options and working closely with the local fleet leadership, including a few World Champions, to ensure the best possible racing and parties.”

For three-time 5O5 World Champion Mike Holt, to be able to participate in a World Championship event on his own turf is exciting—particularly in a fleet as competitive and challenging as the International 5O5.

st. francis yacht club san francisco california

“It’s great to have the regatta in California. It’s an amazing venue in an iconic spectacular piece of water,” Holt stated. “It was very gracious of StFYC to step in at the last minute to host the event. It’ll be fun and I’m looking forward to it.”

The depth of talent in the 5O5 class is impressive, including sailors like Holt who started sailing the boat in 1985 when he was 16 years old.

“I’ve pretty much done only 5O5 sailing all those years. I’ve maybe taken a few years off here and there and sailed other things—keelboats, dinghies, 49ers, 18s—but it’s what I keep coming back to,” said Holt, who resides in Santa Cruz. “When you live on the West Coast it’s really the only good high-performance sailing that you can do safely, and it is a great fleet.”

Holt will be racing with his two-time World Champion crew Carl Smit (Annapolis, MD), and the pair have a long-time friendly rivalry with Mike Martin who lives and trains in the Bay Area. Martin, who sails with Adam Lowry, is a four-time 5O5 World Champion and twelve-time 5O5 North American Champion.

“Carl and I are fairly well-rounded and don’t really care what the weather does,” Holt commented. “I think Mike Martin prefers it when it is windy and he probably has a slight edge on us when it’s windy, but we have a slight edge when it’s more variable.

5O5 sailor Harrison Turner, chairperson for the 2023 5O5 World Championship, likes the timing of the event. “September is our best month, with warmer weather and lighter winds,” Turner commented. “The racing will be located between the clubhouse and Alcatraz Island which will make for great spectating, too.”

Organizers are anticipating some 80 boats from around the world and North America on the start line.

“We’ve heard a lot of interest from Europe, Australia, and from all over North America – we’re expecting as high or higher than numbers for Cork, Ireland last year,” Turner continued. “Holding the event on the West Coast of the US can be a bit of a hurdle for the European fleets, but we have fantastic support from the local fleet as well as the Port of Oakland close by, so logistics will not be as challenging as they may appear for our overseas competitors – we hope they come!”

Turner said his committee is creating a logistics hub where sailors can look for crew and boats if need be.

“Crew can be a hard thing to coordinate so we’d like to be able to connect visiting competitors with local sailors who can make the commitment when maybe their partner can’t,” Turner said. “Our goal is to get as many boats on the water as possible.”

StFYC’s Commodore Beau Vrolyk encouraged sailors to look forward to more than just world-class racing: “This fleet and its epic sailing style have a special place in the hearts of St. Francis members. It’s great to have them back again. This year, we are going all out to give everyone what they came here for: good breeze, close competition, and a racecourse in the most beautiful spot on the San Francisco Bay. It’ll be a beam reach to the bar!”

An Elegant, Contemporary Wedding at St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, California

Erin Hewitt (26 and a choreographer and youth dance teacher) and Sean Gentry’s (30 and a lawyer) wedding was the perfect mix of classic and modern wit

Erin Hewitt (26 and a choreographer and youth dance teacher) and Sean Gentry’s (30 and a lawyer) wedding was the perfect mix of classic and modern with lots of playful personal touches woven throughout. The day kicked off with a ceremony at the Palace of Fine Arts, where Erin and Sean were wed by a close friend and exchanged their own personalized vows. The St. Francis Yacht Club played host to the reception, offering breathtaking views of San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. “Because most of our family and friends would be traveling to come to our wedding,” says Erin, “we wanted to find a place that was truly unique to San Francisco.” A color palette of navy blue, coral, blush, cream and gold paired with fresh bunches of hydrangeas, roses, dahlias and lisianthuses by Fig and Twine to add a pop of bright color to both impressive spaces. Music was a top priority for the couple, who hired Friction Quartet to play during the ceremony, ukulele duo The Paper Dolls to get guests into the mood to celebrate during cocktail hour and a DJ, Four Leaf Entertainment, to keep everyone dancing all night long. Erin and Sean are both dancers, so a top-notch first dance was high on their must-have list. They worked with a ballroom dance instructor to choreograph a fun Foxtrot to surprise their guests. “It looked great on the wedding day and our friends and family kept asking for an encore!” says Erin. Another favorite detail was the Polaroid guest book. “We had Polaroid cameras people could use to take pictures of themselves and a scrapbook to put the pictures in with their message to us,” says Erin. “It was wonderful to have this keepsake to take home that night, rather than pictures you have to wait for. This is still one of our favorite mementos from the wedding.” A tip for the taking from Erin: “Your wedding will cost more than you expect! Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions and negotiate, especially when picking your reception venue. Pick a few important things to focus on and try to be flexible about everything else.”

Roses, dahlias, hydrangeas and ranunculuses in cheerful shades of pink, peach, red and white filled Erin's bouquet. The addition of a few purple blooms and a striped blue and white bouquet wrap tied the arrangement into the wedding's seaside locale.
