How to Charter a Superyacht

Navigating the world of yacht charters can be tricky; our guide breaks down what you need to know.

By Kim Ayling

legend yacht on the water

As the world inches closer to normality, privacy and space are creeping higher on the priority list, making a superyacht charter more appealing than ever. However, the world of private yacht chartering can be as elusive as it is luxurious, making hiring your own boat a tricky process – especially for first-timers.

From the pros and cons of enlisting the help of a broker and choosing the perfect boat, to understanding when to book and planning your itinerary – not to mention the all-important question of how much it costs to charter a luxury yacht – there are plenty of hurdles before you even reach the water. To help you and your guests enjoy a worry-free vacation out on the ocean, Elite Traveler has compiled a comprehensive guide to chartering a superyacht.

[See more: How Much Does it Actually Cost to Charter a Yacht?]

What is a yacht charter?

If you’re new to the world of yacht chartering, even the language can be alienating. A yacht charter is the process of exclusively hiring a yacht for yourself and your guests.

While most charters are for leisure, be it with friends or family, some individuals and companies choose to hire a yacht for business-related reasons, with the undivided service and uncompromised privacy making boats an excellent place to hold meetings and conferences.

The length of a yacht charter depends entirely on your needs; some choose to book for a long weekend or even just a matter of hours if hosting a meeting or conference, whereas others opt for an extended vacation and may charter a yacht for several weeks or even months. Regardless of duration or motive, privately hiring a yacht is always considered a charter.

Using a yacht charter broker

Technically, using a broker to charter a yacht is at your discretion; however, if it is your first time chartering, using a broker comes highly recommended – especially when hiring a larger-than-life superyacht. Yacht brokers will draw upon a large network of connections and extensive industry knowledge to help find the best vessel for your unique requirements.

Once you’ve had an initial consultation, a broker will typically offer a selection of yachts that suit your needs and help you make a final decision. From here, the yacht broker will handle the entire booking process, from securing the initial boat booking to planning each element of your onboard itinerary, including docking points. A reputable yacht charter broker will also be available to contact throughout the duration of your time on board, giving you and your guests complete peace of mind.

Occasionally, first-time charters mistakenly think that booking directly will shave some digits off the total cost, but it actually falls on the yacht owner/charter company to pay the broker fees – not the charterer. In fact, you will often find that a broker will rely on their insider connections to secure the best deal for their clients.

When it comes to choosing a yacht broker you have plenty to choose from, but names like Burgess , Fraser and Northrop & Jonson dominate the superyacht realm. Some people opt for a freelance yacht charter broker, but we’d suggest only heading down this route if you have a pre-existing relationship or they come highly recommended by someone you trust. You should also ensure that any broker you work with is a member of the MYBA Worldwide Yachting Association.

How to choose a yacht

bold explorer yacht by silver yachts

Intrepid travelers with a taste for adventure should choose a sturdier explorer yacht such as Silver Yachts’ Bold  / ©Guillaume Plisson

As we mentioned, your yacht broker will do the hard work when it comes to choosing a yacht, calling upon their wide boat knowledge to present a selection of yachts to you. However, to be able to do this properly they will need a solid understanding of your preferences, requirements and budget beforehand.

The key things you should consider when chartering a superyacht are: the number of guests you want to bring on board (remember the legal limit for most yachts is 12 guests, including personal staff); whether or not the yacht needs to be child-friendly, the amount of indoor/outdoor space you’d like on board; where you’d like to travel, as many yachts are only available in certain parts of the world; and the on board amenities you’d like – for example, is an indoor swimming pool a priority or does a dancefloor sound more appealing?

The type of yachting vacation you’re seeking is also important when choosing a boat: for intrepid travelers with a taste for adventure, a sturdier explorer yacht such as Silver Yachts’ Bold or Ragnar by Royal Niestern Sand would be more suitable than a classic yacht, designed for luxury and comfort.

However, if it is your first time chartering a superyacht, don’t feel concerned about going in clueless – your yacht broker will be able to guide you through every step of choosing a vessel.

Bareboat vs skippered superyacht charter

When chartering a luxury yacht, you will sometimes be given the choice between a ‘bareboat’ or ‘skippered’ charter – bareboat being a crewless charter and skippered including a full complement of staff. However, you will find that when verging into superyacht territory, all charters are skippered for both your safety and comfort.

Again, you can always discuss the on-board crew specifications with your broker, and this is a good opportunity to outline what you’d like from your yachting experience. For example, if you have a taste for adventure, ensure that there is a watersports instructor within the crew. Looking for a more relaxing on-board experience? Ask your broker to look into securing a masseuse for your journey.

When to book a superyacht charter

When to begin booking a yacht charter is an important question. Leading charter company Northrop & Johnson recommends reaching out to a broker no later than 10 months in advance if you want to travel during peak times (July and August in the summer season, Christmas and New Year during winter), and three to six months ahead for quieter periods. However, with popular yachts booking up as much as a year in advance, it’s advisable to reach out to a broker at least 12 months ahead of time if you have specific boat or date requirements.

When booking in advance, remember that local events will heavily impact availability. For example, if you’re planning a European tour, take note of events such as the Cannes Film Festival and the Monaco Grand Prix when both vessels and docking spaces will be in high demand.

How much does it cost to charter a superyacht?

It’s no secret that yacht charters are expensive, with many first-timers unprepared for the hidden costs. It’s generally accepted that the biggest price indicator of a yacht charter is boat size – so if you’re heading into superyacht territory, expect an impressive fee.

However, other factors will impact the cost of chartering a superyacht , such as crew reputation, ship design and the age of the vessel. For example, Fraser Yachts offer a week on the 298.5-ft Moonlight II which was first built in 2005 from €645,000 (approximately $768,200), but prices for the 278-ft Solandge, which was built in 2013 and refitted in 2019, begin at €1m ($1.2m) per week.

Although some charter costs are inclusive, meaning expenses such as captain and crew, fuel, food and drink are included, you’ll find that a ‘plus expenses’ charter is more common. With such charters, only the crew and ship are included in the price, an ‘Advance Provisioning Allowance’ (APA) is used to cover the necessary extras and is usually around 30% of the weekly charter fee. What the APA doesn’t cover however is crew gratuity which although given at your discretion, is expected, with the going rate around 15-20%.

To avoid tarnishing your vacation with unexpected fees and charges, ask your broker for a full price breakdown beforehand, including any potential docking fees and additional taxes.

Navigating Luxury: Your Guide to Superyacht Charter

Introduction.

The world of superyacht chartering is a realm of opulence, luxury, and unparalleled experiences. For those who seek the epitome of lavish travel, super yachts and mega yachts offer an tempting allure. This article delves into the key factors that impact clients when renting these floating palaces, including some of the largest and most expensive yachts globally. We’ll navigate through the tradeoffs involved in balancing factors like size, amenities, and destinations, while also exploring the challenges associated with different approaches. Additionally, we’ll highlight the importance of considering the environmental impact when making decisions about what superyacht to charter.

Charter superyachts

Size Matters – Mega Yacht vs. Superyacht Charter

When it comes to super yacht charter, the first decision often revolves around size. Superyachts and Mega yachts are the giants of the maritime world, but they come with different dimensions and experiences.

Mega Yacht Charter

Mega yachts are massive vessels that exceed 100 meters (328 feet) in length. They boast impressive size and can accommodate numerous guests and crew members. The larger size allows for greater stability, offering a smoother cruising experience even in rough waters. Mega yachts often feature multiple decks, swimming pools, helipads, and even mini-submarines.

Superyacht Charter

Superyachts are slightly smaller, typically ranging from 24 to 100 meters (79 to 328 feet) in length. They offer a more intimate experience compared to mega yachts, making them ideal for smaller groups or families. Superyachts still provide opulent amenities but on a slightly smaller scale, with spacious cabins, lounges, and water toys.

Tradeoff : The choice between mega yachts and superyachts boils down to personal preference and the number of guests. While mega yachts offer unmatched extravagance and space, superyachts provide a cozier atmosphere.

The Price of Luxury

Luxury yacht charters are synonymous with lavishness, but the cost can vary significantly depending on several factors.

Factors Influencing the Price of a Superyacht Charter

  • Yacht Size : Larger yachts typically come with higher charter costs due to increased maintenance and crew requirements.
  • Amenities : Yachts equipped with extravagant amenities like cinema rooms, spas, and gourmet kitchens command a premium price.
  • Destination : Some destinations have higher operational costs, impacting the overall charter price.
  • Season : Chartering during peak seasons in popular cruising regions can be substantially more expensive.
  • Additional Expenses : Fuel, crew gratuities, and provisioning are additional costs that should be factored in.

Tradeoff : Clients must strike a balance between their budget and desired level of luxury. Opting for a slightly smaller yacht or considering offseason charters can help manage costs.

Charting Your Course – Destinations and Itineraries

Selecting the right destination and itinerary is a crucial aspect of super yacht chartering. The world is a vast playground, offering a multitude of experiences.

Popular Superyacht Charter Destinations

  • Mediterranean : The Mediterranean is a perennial favorite, offering a blend of historic ports, picturesque coastlines, and vibrant nightlife.
  • Caribbean : Crystal-clear waters, idyllic islands, and a laid-back atmosphere make the Caribbean a top choice.
  • South Pacific : The South Pacific beckons with its remote islands, coral reefs, and untouched natural beauty.
  • Alaska : Adventurous souls seek the raw beauty of Alaska’s fjords, glaciers, and abundant wildlife.

Tradeoff : The choice of destination often entails tradeoffs between culture, climate, and activities. Clients must consider their preferences, whether it’s exploring ancient ruins, lounging on pristine beaches, or embarking on adrenaline-pumping adventures.

Superyacht Charter Crew and Service Excellence

A hallmark of luxury yacht charters is the exceptional crew and service provided to clients. The quality of the crew can significantly impact the overall experience.

The Crew’s Role in Luxury Yacht Charter

  • Captain : The captain is responsible for navigation, safety, and ensuring the smooth running of the vessel.
  • Chef : A skilled chef can elevate the culinary experience onboard, tailoring menus to guest preferences.
  • Steward(ess) : Stewards and stewardesses attend to guests’ needs, ensuring their comfort and enjoyment.
  • Deck Crew : Deckhands and water sports instructors facilitate activities like snorkeling, diving, and watersports.

Tradeoff : Investing in a highly experienced and skilled crew enhances the luxury quotient but can also increase charter costs. Balancing crew quality with budget constraints is a key consideration.

Environmental Consciousness in Chartering

In an era of increasing environmental awareness, chartering a luxury yacht also comes with ethical responsibilities.

Environmental Impact of Luxury Superyacht Charter

  • Fuel Consumption : Large yachts can consume substantial amounts of fuel, contributing to carbon emissions.
  • Marine Conservation : Charterers must be mindful of fragile marine ecosystems and protected areas.
  • Waste Management : Proper disposal of waste at sea is crucial to minimize environmental harm.

Eco-Friendly Charter Options : Some charter companies offer eco-friendly yachts with hybrid propulsion systems, advanced wastewater treatment, and sustainable practices.

Tradeoff : Balancing the desire for opulence with eco-consciousness requires clients to seek out environmentally responsible charter options and make conscientious choices while on board.

The Largest and Most Expensive Yachts

For those with no budget constraints, the world of luxury yacht charter unveils a roster of the largest and most expensive vessels.

Top Mega Yachts and Superyachts for Charter

  • Azzam : Currently the largest yacht in the world, Azzam measures a staggering 180 meters (590 feet) and offers unmatched opulence.
  • Eclipse : Owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, Eclipse boasts features like a missile defense system and two helipads.
  • Rising Sun : With a length of 138 meters (452 feet), Rising Sun is a popular choice among celebrities and offers a range of luxurious amenities.

Tradeoff : Chartering one of these behemoths comes with a price tag that matches their grandeur. However, it’s an experience that’s truly in a league of its own.

Rent a super yacht

Chartering for Special Occasions

Luxury yacht charters are often chosen for special occasions, and they can be customized accordingly.

Special Occasions on Luxury Yachts

  • Weddings : Yacht weddings in picturesque locations provide a romantic backdrop.
  • Anniversaries : Celebrate milestones with a private charter and custom-designed experiences.
  • Corporate Retreats : Yacht charters offer a unique setting for team-building and corporate events.

Tradeoff : While these experiences are unparalleled, clients must carefully plan and budget for the specific demands of their special occasion.

Booking Your Dream Superyacht Charter

Booking a luxury yacht charter is a meticulous process that involves several steps.

Steps to Booking a Luxury Yacht Charter

  • Define Your Preferences : Determine your budget, group size, destination, and must-have amenities.
  • Research Charter Companies : Investigate reputable charter companies and their fleets.
  • Itinerary Planning : Work with charter brokers to plan your itinerary, considering the desired activities and sights.
  • Negotiate Terms : Review contracts, negotiate pricing, and confirm all details with the charter company.

Tradeoff : The tradeoff here is the time and effort invested in the booking process. However, meticulous planning ensures a smooth and memorable experience.

Luxury yacht charters offer a unique and extravagant way to explore the world’s oceans while enjoying unparalleled comfort and service. Clients must carefully weigh factors like yacht size, budget, destination, crew quality, and environmental impact to make the best choice for their dream charter. Whether it’s a mega yacht or a superyacht, an eco-conscious charter or a lavish celebration, the world of luxury yacht chartering caters to diverse tastes and desires.

Navigating Your Luxury Journey for Superyacht Charter

Embarking on a luxury yacht charter is a journey unlike any other. It’s a blend of opulence, adventure, and ethical considerations, and finding the right balance is key. As you set sail on your charter, remember that the world’s oceans are not just a playground; they are also a precious resource that deserves respect and protection. So, charter wisely, explore responsibly, and savor every moment of your unforgettable voyage aboard a luxury yacht.

 Mega yacht

Prices for renting a luxury yacht

The cost of renting a luxury yacht can vary significantly based on a variety of factors, including the size of the yacht, its amenities, the destination, and the time of year. Below are some approximate price ranges for renting the types of yachts mentioned.

Mega Yachts

  • Small to Medium Mega Yachts (100-150 feet): These can range from approximately $50,000 to $200,000 per week.
  • Large Mega Yachts (over 150 feet): Chartering one of the largest mega yachts can cost anywhere from $200,000 to several million dollars per week, depending on the yacht’s size, amenities, and location.

Superyachts

  • Small to Medium Superyachts (80-120 feet): Weekly charter prices for these can start at around $20,000 and go up to $100,000 or more.
  • Larger Superyachts (120-200 feet): Chartering a larger superyacht can range from approximately $100,000 to $500,000 or more per week.

Top Mega Yachts and Superyacht Charter

  • Azzam (largest yacht in the world): Chartering Azzam could cost upwards of $1 million per week.
  • Eclipse (Roman Abramovich’s yacht): Eclipse’s charter rates can be in the range of $2 million to $3 million per week.
  • Rising Sun: Chartering Rising Sun may cost around $4 million to $5 million per week.

It’s important to note that these are rough estimates, and the actual cost of chartering a yacht can vary widely based on specific yacht features, the duration of the charter, additional expenses (such as fuel, crew gratuities, and provisioning), and the chosen destination. Additionally, during peak seasons in popular cruising regions, prices tend to be at their highest.

Charter rates often include the yacht itself, crew salaries, standard amenities, and insurance. However, clients should be prepared for additional expenses, such as fuel, food and beverages, port fees, and crew gratuities, which can add a significant amount to the overall cost.

To get precise pricing for a particular yacht and itinerary, it’s advisable to consult with reputable yacht charter brokers or companies, who can provide detailed quotes tailored to your specific preferences and needs.

If you’re a first-time charterer and wondering how to charter a yacht, or have questions about the finer details, then read our comprehensive guide. Here we provide the most important information to prepare you for a conversation with a yacht charter consultant.

Charter a superyacht and see the world your way.

Superyacht Charter FAQs for Beginners

A superyacht charter offers a self-sufficient sanctuary coupled with limitless levels of luxury. Unlike at resorts or on a cruise, you will enjoy exclusive use of your charter yacht, offering complete privacy and a safe and secure environment. A charter yacht comes with a dedicated crew who will cater to your every need. Crew to guest ratios are unsurpassed, ensuring an incredible holiday experience. Finally, when you charter a yacht, you can enjoy a holiday your way, with no rigid itineraries or schedules to adhere to.

You can charter a superyacht at any time of year. Remember that charter yachts will be in high demand during peak times, around July and August, when many yachts are in the Mediterranean, and December and January, when most charter yachts are located in the Caribbean. If you want to charter a yacht during the peak months, you’ll need to book several months in advance. Our yacht consultants can match you to your ideal charter superyacht for your desired dates.

When you charter a superyacht, the world is at your fingertips. Destinations such as the Mediterranean and the Caribbean are firm favourites with charterers. Others prefer to explore the path less travelled, such as cruising the ice-filled waters of Antarctica. Tell us where in the world you want to explore, and we will make it happen.

The beauty of chartering a superyacht is the opportunity to see the world your way. Aboard a luxury crewed charter yacht, you can set your own itinerary. Benefit from our expert under-the-radar recommendations and in-depth knowledge on popular port-of-calls. Contact our yacht consultants who will listen to your holiday requirements and then work with you to create an incredible door-to-deck itinerary tailored for you, or try our itinerary builder to begin planning your personalised yacht charter.

With real-time access to every charter yacht in the world, with TJB Super Yachts, you’ll find a yacht suited to every adventure. Sailing yachts will suit those who want to harness the power of Mother Nature, while a motor yacht filled with tenders and toys will often be the option of choice for families seeking to cruise blue water havens. Alternatively, an explorer yacht is ideal for those wishing to discover the world’s most remote destination. Once you’ve decided on the type of yacht, you’ll also want to consider onboard services, such as whether you want a private chef, nanny, or spa therapist. TJB Super Yachts’ team of yacht consultants will listen to your needs and then handpick a selection of charter yachts that meet your exact requirements.

The Base Charter Fee or cost of a superyacht charter typically covers the hire of the yacht, crew, and the owner’s insurance. Additional charges often include provisioning, fuel, and mooring costs. On average, guests typically spend an additional 25-50 percent of the base charter fee. These additional expenses are covered by the Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA), which is taken before the charter.

During your yacht charter, the yacht’s captain will keep a log of all costs during your yacht charter, and any excess funds will be returned to you. Precise charges and what is included and not included, is subject to the terms and conditions of the yacht charter. There are various types of charter contracts, depending on your cruising destination, so you should always check with your yacht consultant as to what additional charges there will be. Our yacht consultants will be able to explain the details of each charter contract and let you know an estimate of additional costs that you can expect on top of the Base Charter Fee. Sometimes savings can be made, for example, by anchoring at sea rather than in a harbour. Our yacht consultants will be able to estimate additional costs for your charter experience and advise accordingly.

Chartering A Superyacht: The Finer Details

Now we’ve explored the basic details of chartering a superyacht, let’s explore some of the finer details and charter etiquette, including some of the points you may have not thought to ask.

Yes, all TJB Super Yachts charter yachts are crewed with a professional and fully trained team who will cater to your every need throughout your charter experience.

There will always be a crew member on duty on yachts with multiple crew as they will work a shift pattern. So, whether you fancy a midnight snack, a sunrise adventure, or a late-night movie night, your yacht’s crew will make it happen.

Yes, the crew can cater to individual dietary needs. Many superyacht charters come with a private chef who will prepare meals to your exact requirements.

Yes, you can request rare wines – or any other type of drinks – when chartering a superyacht. Many of the larger superyachts come with dedicated sommeliers, who will have the knowledge and expertise to acquire some of the world’s finest wines. They will also be happy to make suggested wine pairings and selections throughout your charter experience.

Most yacht’s do not permit you to wear shoes. This is to protect the yacht and ensure it is kept in pristine condition. Some yacht’s do permit boat shoes, as long as they are new and not worn on-shore. Our team of yacht consultants will be able to advise you before your yacht charter.

Some yachts allow smoking in dedicated outdoor areas. Before chartering a superyacht, you should let your yacht consultant know if you wish to be able to smoke on the yacht. Almost no yachts allow smoking in the yacht’s interior.

Some charter yachts do allow pets on board. Again, before chartering a superyacht, you should let your yacht consultant know that you wish to bring your pet with you. They will then handpick a selection of yachts that allow pets.

Absolutely! Chartering a superyacht is the ideal way to enjoy a family holiday. Many charter yachts come with trained nannies and childminders, ensuring little ones enjoy an incredible holiday experience while adults get to enjoy some ‘me’ time. Let your yacht consultant know if you want to charter a superyacht with young children. They will suggest a suitable yacht, including a yacht with childminding professionals if desired.

Yes, when chartering a superyacht, you’ll find many yachts come with full-service spas, including treatment rooms, hair salons, hammams, saunas, and hot tubs. Even some of the smaller charter yachts often include a crew member who is a trained massage therapist. Our team of yacht consultants will listen to your needs and then handpick a selection of yacht charters with your desired services and amenities.

Yes, many of the world’s finest yachts come with dedicated fitness areas and state-of-the-art equipment. Some yachts will also include personal trainers who will assist you in keeping up with your fitness regimen while chartering a superyacht. Our team of yacht consultants will be able to select a yacht charter that meets your fitness needs.

Yes, almost all charter yachts offer access to high-speed internet, enabling you to stay connected while at sea. Your personal yacht consultant will be able to handpick a selection of superyacht charters that come with access to WIFI if this is particularly important to you.

Yes, one of the benefits of chartering a superyacht is the ability to holiday your way. If you wish to stay a little longer in a port of call or decide to skip a scheduled port of call and visit somewhere different, then let your captain know. They will do the best to accommodate your wishes.

Yes, it is sometimes possible to extend your superyacht charter. Contact your TJB yacht consultant, and they will check the yacht’s availability. If your yacht charter can be extended, they will handle all the necessary paperwork.

Your yacht’s captain will monitor local weather conditions and make adjustments to your itinerary if necessary to avoid inclement weather. However, it is important to note that it is not always possible to avoid bad weather conditions. See it as an opportunity to relax onboard your yacht charter and enjoy the yacht’s many luxury amenities, or head onshore and enjoy dining in the local restaurants or exploring the shops.

All TJB Super Yacht charters adhere to the very highest standards of safety and must carry the latest lifesaving equipment on board. Additionally, all crew are trained in CPR, while senior crew members, including the captain, will have advanced training.

When chartering a superyacht, you can rest easy knowing that the very highest cleaning regimens are adhered to. All TJB Super Yacht charter yachts are maintained to the very highest standards and adhere to strict daily cleaning procedures.

Tipping a yacht’s crew is discretionary when chartering a superyacht. If you wish to tip your crew, it is customary to tip around 10 to 15 percent of the yacht’s charter price.

In the unlikely event that you wish to make a complaint when on a superyacht charter you should first alert the Captain as soon as possible. Alternatively, you can contact your personal yacht consultant who will take the relevant action.

When your yacht is in international waters the yacht will be governed by the yacht’s flag state. When in local waters, the yacht will be governed by local laws. Illegal drugs and weapons are prohibited on board a charter yacht. You may be permitted to smoke Marijuna onboard a charter yacht if it is legal in the yacht’s flag state and at local destinations on your charter itinerary. Your yacht consultant will be able to advise further.

Why is Plymouth a good sailing destination?

The Adriatic Sea, a radiant jewel of Europe, has long been the muse of sailors, poets, and explorers. Its allure is undeniable, and with Yachting.Rent, we aim to unveil the reasons behind its magnetic pull as a premium sailing destination.

The Adriatic is a unique blend of history and untouched beauty. Spanning from the Venetian canals to the dramatic cliffs of Montenegro, it offers sailors a timeline of civilizations past. But history is just the beginning. The Adriatic’s natural beauty is breathtaking. Over a thousand islands dot its expanse, ranging from densely forested landscapes to secluded beaches only accessible by boat. These pockets of paradise, many untouched by modern tourism, offer sailors an exclusive experience of the Mediterranean’s pristine beauty. The sea itself, with its crystal-clear turquoise waters, is a dream for divers, swimmers, and marine enthusiasts. With the gentle Mediterranean climate ensuring balmy summers and mild winters, the Adriatic offers an extended sailing season compared to many other destinations.

The unspoken rules about how to behave on a superyacht

  • The superyachting world is very small, with only 5,800 yachts longer than 30 meters at sea.
  • That insularity has bred a specific etiquette, which is often hard for outsiders to know about.
  • These are the de facto rules of the most expensive billionaire toys, superyachts .

Insider Today

For the owners of superyachts , privacy is often the most valuable thing money can buy. It's one reason centimillionaires and billionaires pay eight or nine figures for a palace at sea, far from the prying eyes of land dwellers.

Even the most gossipy crew members should stay tight-lipped about the name of a former owner or charter guest, and many brokers shy away from answering benign questions.

That means that, aside from basic safety guidelines, most of the rules of superyachting are unwritten. The very few who need to know them — there are only about 5,800 yachts longer than 30 meters at sea, according to SuperYacht Times — already know them.

But if you do happen to be a lucky guest at a party on a billionaire's $500 million ship or find yourself included in a $1 million-a-week vacation, there are a few things you need to know.

After four days of touring superyachts that sell for as much as $75 million and chatting with the people who buy, sell, and work on them at the Palm Beach International Boat Show , Business Insider gleaned a few key edicts. Given the discreet nature of the industry, almost all the people we spoke with requested anonymity to protect their working relationships, but here's what they had to say.

Take off your shoes

While it's a basic rule for anyone in boating, it may come as a surprise to an outsider that no matter how rich you are or how expensive your heels are, in the vast majority of cases, you can't wear shoes on board.

It's partly for safety — you don't want anyone slipping on a wet deck — but partly to keep the yacht clean. So expect to see barefoot billionaires, and if you forgot to get a pedicure, bring a set of special boat shoes.

Don't make any assumptions about money — but know the signs

In the superyacht world, it's safe to assume almost everyone you meet is very, very rich, and many brokers and builders say you can't judge a book by its cover when it comes to prospective clients.

"It has nothing to do with how they're dressed," one broker told BI. "It's the biggest mistake you can make because a complete slobby-looking guy or couple could be a multibillionaire."

There are, however, a few clues. Watches are one; new footwear is another.

"Rich people always have new shoes," a superyacht expert said. But because of the shoe rule mentioned above, this tip probably applies only when they're on land.

Book your massage early

Wellness areas, including spa rooms with a massage bed or two and a professional-grade facial machine, are becoming must-haves on superyachts . Most have a customized spa menu and a crew member who doubles as a trained masseuse or beautician — and they're usually in high demand.

One captain said he'd implemented a booking system to ensure people weren't fighting for the same spots. A broker said sometimes masseuses would be so busy they wouldn't leave the small spa cabin for hours on end.

So if you want to make the most of your relaxing time on board, reserve your pampering slot as soon as you get your welcome cocktail.

Pirates are more real than you'd think, and many superyachts have hidden safe rooms

While you might dress up as a fake pirate for an onboard theme party, there are very real ones — and other dangers — on the high seas.

In certain areas, including parts of the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden, pirates are a cause of concern . In the Red Sea, owners are concerned about the Houthis .

Superyachts can come equipped with sonic weaponry, lockdown systems, and anti-drone protection. Builders are even designing safe rooms — which are apparently just as plush as the rest of the ship.

The longer the boat, the closer to $1 billion

While you can't judge a buyer based on appearances, you can judge them on the length of their boat.

One rule of thumb: If someone has a brand-new 50-meter vessel, chances are they have $1 billion to their name. If it's over 100 meters, expect the owner to have at least $2 billion. And for a boat bigger than that — like Jeff Bezos' 127-meter megayacht Koru — it takes many, many billions.

Money can't buy you everything

The world's biggest, most expensive yachts are custom-built by shipyards that produce only a handful of boats a year.

But no matter how many tens of millions of dollars clients are spending, there are things to which builders will refuse to say yes.

"In the end, the boat has our name," an executive from one of the world's biggest shipyards told BI.

They recalled a client who requested a yellow hull to match his Lamborghini . The shipyard declined, steering the client in another direction.

"If I don't like it, I don't build it. I finalize two or three contracts a year," another builder said. "If somebody can say your vessel is ugly, my reputation is bad."

Yacht crews are trained to make the impossible possible. A guest requests fresh caviar flown into the middle of the Caribbean? No problem. Fresh flowers every day while at sea? It'll cost you, but it can be done.

But they can't time travel, and captains and crew members say the thing that causes the most friction is when a client or owner wants to go from point A to point B — right now.

"The hardest request is when they want the boat in a place — yesterday," one captain said.

The best person to know? A friend with a superyacht

Superyachts are expensive to build and expensive to maintain . According to the industry standard, owning a superyacht will cost 10% of its new-build price annually. For a $100 million yacht, that's at least $10 million yearly going to crew, regular maintenance, insurance, fuel, and dockage.

Chartering, too, is costly . Beyond the list price, which can be hundreds of thousands a week, guests must pay for provisions, which are pegged at 35% of the charter fee, and are expected to tip between 10% and 20%.

So the most important unspoken rule of superyachting is actually that the only thing better than owning a superyacht is knowing someone else who does — and invites you along, of course.

Jill Zarin Blames Below Deck’s Fraser Olender for Making Her Season 11 Trip a ‘Total Disaster’

Jill Zarin Blames Below Deck's Fraser Olender for Making Her Season 11 Trip a 'Total Disaster'

The Below Deck cast passed judgment on Jill Zarin — and now it’s her turn to return the favor.

“I went into it with the attitude that I want to make a good show. I was me, I literally was me. I was me the way I am in my real life,” Jill, 60, explained on the Tuesday, April 9, episode of the “Juicy Scoop” podcast .

After watching her scenes from season 11, Jill appeared to have no regrets, adding, “If I like my Diet Coke then I want another. If I don’t like it then I will send it back. If I don’t like my food then I send it back. Most people do.”

The former Real Housewives of New York City star said St. David being a megayacht meant she expected a higher level of service.

“It was $45,000 for two nights. You get on the boat at 12 and right away you get lunch,” she continued. “You get an explanation — which I actually taped on my phone that I am going to post — of [chief steward] Fraser [Olender] explaining the layout of the next two days.”

Jill made her debut on Below Deck earlier this month when she was a guest on a two-day charter. Her demands, however, quickly became too much for the crew .

Jill Zarin Blames Below Deck's Fraser Olender for Making Her Season 11 Trip a 'Total Disaster'

“Jill is the primary in her head. She’s overwhelming,” stew Barbie Pascual said in a confessional before apologizing via social media after the episode aired. “I think she’s annoying and I think it is too much. You are a freeloading guest who is extremely demanding. This is too much for me. I need another stew just for Jill.”

Throughout the charter, Jill brought up certain issues, such as food service , directly to Fraser. “Can I give you another recommendation for the yacht? I had this on mine,” she added. “A button for the primary, and it is like a doorbell. I used to have a doorbell and it would go up to the kitchen.”

Fraser said the demands made him feel as if Jill was “crawling into” his brain and “eating away” at his soul. In response, Jill claimed it was Fraser’s fault that she and her friends weren’t thrilled with their time on the yacht.

“In fact, one of the things he emphasized which is ironic is that there would be snacks and food all the time everywhere. He actually emphasized and completely didn’t deliver,” she noted on Tuesday. “When I think about the trip, it was the head stew’s job to make sure things went seamlessly, and I kind of blame him for the trip being a total disaster.”

Jill “felt terrible” for her fellow guests, adding, “They spent an enormous amount of money. I wanted them to have an amazing experience. … I did this show because my friends wanted to go on TV — I don’t blame them. I didn’t mind doing it with them because as long as I am me, I am good.”

Before Jill’s onscreen appearance on Below Deck, Fraser teased the challenging charter . “She’s sweet. She’s very lovely and very funny — but demanding,” Fraser exclusively told Us Weekly in February. “[But] all guests are demanding. They’re charter guests and they’ve got their preferences and sometimes they can be frustrating.”

Fraser also commented on Jill’s craziest request, sharing, “It’s going to be the ice. She didn’t like any of the ice apart from a specific one. From a specific freezer. So we had to have a specific ice box that kind of followed wherever she went. I love it. If that’s the biggest concern, then we should [be good].”

Below Deck season 11 airs on Bravo Mondays at 9 p.m. ET. New episodes stream the next day on Peacock.
