How Much Does It Cost to Go on a Superyacht?
Posted June 27, 2022 in Charter by Janine St.Denis
Yacht charters have become popular in recent years because they offer all the same amenities of renting a gorgeous luxury villa without the crowds and impersonal vibe of cruise travel. You have ownership of the yacht for the duration of your trip, which adds a layer of freedom that appeals to adventure seekers around the world. A yacht charter is the ultimate luxury experience.
Depending on the size, amenities, and condition of the yacht, superyachts can cost anywhere from $4,000 /week to over $2 million /week plus expenses.
In this article, we’ll detail the differences between a yacht and a superyacht and explore how much it is to go on a superyacht .
What’s the Difference Between Yachts and Superyachts?
Yachts come in several classifications, which means you have a variety to choose from.
What Is a Yacht?
A yacht is a recreational sea vessel used for entertainment, like cruising, water sports, or fishing . At a minimum, a yacht includes sleeping quarters, a kitchen, and a bathroom. There is no set standard definition, but the term applies to a ship with amenities that can accommodate overnight use.
What Is a Superyacht?
Superyachts are the gold standard in luxury yachting. They can accommodate six passengers at a minimum, but often host more than 10 passengers and a robust crew. Many superyachts have a variety of deluxe amenities like:
- Swimming pools
- Tennis courts
- Outdoor cinemas
- Helicopter pads
What Is Included in the Price of a Superyacht Charter ?
Superyacht charter prices are typically quoted at weekly rates. This will account for about 60–70% of the total cost. For a superyacht, expect to pay $100,000 or more per week.
Charter prices include:
- Yacht rental
- All equipment and amenities
- Crew salary
- Additional services
The more extravagant your vessel, the more you can expect to pay.
What Is Not Included in the Price of a Yacht Charter?
Yacht charters are generally “all-inclusive,” but this doesn’t include things like tips and taxes. Here is a list of a few things that are not included when you rent a superyacht:
- Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA). APA covers provisions while onboard, including any specific requests you may have and several variable costs (including port fees, excursions, etc.). It’s a standard system managed by your captain. The crew uses this allowance to purchase products of your choosing and for taxis, communication fees, port fees, and other expenses that are difficult to budget for ahead of time.
- Taxes and VAT rates. Taxes are not included in superyacht charter prices. You will also be subject to VAT rates when chartering a yacht in Europe.
- Crew gratuity. Your superyacht will come with an expansive and experienced crew. You’ll want to factor their gratuity into your overall costs. They’re at your service nearly 24/7, so it’s customary to leave them a tip at the end of your charter.
Yacht Charter Costs To Consider
Here are a few other factors that may influence how much your yacht charter is :
- The size of the yacht. You’ll pay a weekly rate of $100,000 or more for a superyacht charter rental. If you want something smaller, the price varies between $20,000 and $80,000. For a megayacht rental (much bigger than a superyacht), you can expect to pay upwards of a million dollars. The larger the yacht, the higher the cost.
- Seasonal influences. Depending on the destination, certain times of year are more expensive than others. For example, the Caribbean costs more during the winter, whereas in the Mediterranean, the summer months are pricier.
- Exotic destinations. Exotic destinations cost more. The Galápagos Archipelago is a great example. Since yacht fleets are limited there, prices are higher. The Mediterranean is easier to access and thus less expensive.

How Much To Charter a Superyacht? (Less Than You Think)
Spending a week on a luxurious superyacht can be expensive, but there are ways to make it a dream come true without breaking the bank. In fact, you might be surprised to know that the cost of chartering one may be less than you think. In this article, we have researched the average charter rates of superyachts, from the cheapest to the most expensive.
Chartering a superyacht can cost anywhere from $40,000 to over $2 million per week, plus expenses. Smaller superyachts measuring under 30 meters have a weekly charter rate of around $43,000, while megayachts measuring 80 meters and over have an average rate of $1.8 million a week.
When choosing a superyacht for your charter, there are a variety of options you can choose from—may it be small yachts to megayachts, classic or modern yachts, or whether it is sailing or motor-operated, there's a specific type for your needs and preferences. Let's learn below how the type of yacht affects the overall chartering costs.
- The cheapest superyacht you can charter is a small sailing superyacht with an average cost of $43,000 per week. The most expensive is a megayacht, on which a week's trip can cost millions of dollars.
- If you are looking for a vintage-style kind of superyacht, you can choose a classic superyacht, mostly made up of wood. But if you're leaning towards technology, modern superyachts will be more enjoyable for you.
- Chartering a superyacht in the Caribbean is less costly compared to chartering a superyacht in the Mediterranean.

Chartering a superyacht can actually be more affordable than you think. When it comes to the cost breakdown, there are a few key factors to consider.

€70,895 per week | |
€1.7 million per week | |
30% of charter fee | |
€4,000 - €10,000 per day (varies based on distance and speed)
€500 - €2,000 per day (varies based on location and yacht size)
10-20% of charter fee |
The charter fee depends on the size of the yacht
The charter fee is the base cost for renting the yacht and typically includes the use of the yacht, crew salaries, and insurance. The cost of the charter fee can vary greatly depending on the size and type of yacht, as well as the location and time of year.
![superyachts rates](https://improvesailing.com/media/pages/cost/cost-of-chartering-a-superyacht/4022945890-1687950048/arno-senoner-jdqpgyry4ws-unsplash-1.jpg)
Smaller superyachts measuring under 30 meters will have a weekly charter rate somewhere around €40,000 (around $43,000), while yachts between 30 and 40 meters will weigh in at an average of €70,895 (around $77,000) per week. On the other hand, mega yachts measuring 80 meters and over have an average rate of €1.7 million (or around $1.8 million) a week.
The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is typically 30% of the charter fee
The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is an additional fee that covers expenses such as food, drinks, fuel, and dockage costs during the charter. The APA is usually calculated as a percentage of the charter fee, typically around 30% . The APA is paid before the charter begins, and any unused funds will be returned to you at the end of the charter.
Fuel and dockage costs depend on a variety of factors
Fuel and dockage costs are typically included in the APA, but you may need to be aware of these costs as they can add up quickly. Fuel costs will depend on the distance traveled and the speed of the yacht, while dockage costs will depend on the location and the size of the yacht. You might need to discuss these costs with your yacht charter broker before booking the charter.
Crew gratuity ranges around 0–20% of the charter fee
Crew gratuity is a customary payment for the crew and is typically around 10–20% of the charter fee. This is not a mandatory fee, but it is expected and greatly appreciated by the crew. The gratuity can be paid in cash or added to the APA.
Below is a table comparing the different types of superyachts you can charter and their weekly costs, based on their size, style, and propulsion.

Over 80 meters | Luxury amenities | Excellent condition
50–70 meters | Vintage amenities | Restored condition

The size of the superyacht matters
Superyachts come in a range of sizes, from small sailing yachts to massive megayachts. The size of the yacht you choose will depend on a variety of factors, including the number of guests you plan to bring, the destinations you want to visit, and your budget.
![superyachts rates](https://improvesailing.com/media/pages/cost/cost-of-chartering-a-superyacht/1091601574-1687950243/arno-senoner-jsjdbeajncc-unsplash-1.jpg)
Smaller yachts, such as sailing yachts and motor yachts, are typically more affordable and can accommodate up to 12 guests. Larger yachts, such as megayachts and explorer yachts, can accommodate up to 36 guests and offer more amenities and space.
Consider the style of the superyacht
Classic yachts are typically made of wood and have a timeless, elegant design. They offer a sense of nostalgia and tradition and are often favored by those who appreciate the craftsmanship and history of sailing.
Modern yachts, on the other hand, are sleek and contemporary, with cutting-edge technology and amenities. They offer a more futuristic and luxurious experience and are often favored by those who want the latest and greatest in yacht design.
Comparison between sailing and motor yachts
The propulsion of the yacht is another important factor to consider. Sailing yachts offer a more authentic and eco-friendly experience, with the wind as the primary source of power. They are also quieter and more peaceful, allowing you to enjoy the sound of the waves and the beauty of the sea.
Motor yachts, on the other hand, offer more speed and power, allowing you to cover more ground and visit more destinations in a shorter amount of time. They also offer more amenities, such as hot tubs, gyms, and helipads, making them ideal for those who want a more luxurious and indulgent experience.

Chartering a yacht in the Caribbean vs. the Mediterranean
The Mediterranean and the Caribbean are two of the most popular destinations for superyacht charters. The Mediterranean is known for its stunning coastline, historic cities, and glamorous ports of call. The Caribbean, on the other hand, is famous for its crystal-clear waters, white-sand beaches, and laid-back island lifestyle.
If you're looking for a yachting destination with a rich history and culture, the Mediterranean is the place to be. You can explore ancient ruins, dine on Michelin-starred cuisine, and experience some of the world's most famous events, such as the Monaco Grand Prix and the Cannes Film Festival . Charter prices for luxury superyachts in the Meds can range from €30,000 to over €1 million per week.
If, on the other hand, you're looking for a more relaxed charter destination where you can soak up the sun and enjoy water sports, the Caribbean is the perfect choice. You can swim with dolphins in the Bahamas, snorkel in the Virgin Islands, and enjoy a beach barbecue on a secluded island. Chartering a superyacht in the Caribbean can be as pricey as $100,000–$500,000 or more.
Renting a superyacht during seasons with special events
If you're planning your superyacht charter around a special event, such as a music festival or a sporting event, you'll need to consider the location and timing of the event. Some of the most popular events for superyacht charters include the Monaco Grand Prix, the Cannes Film Festival, and the America's Cup.
Keep in mind that these events can be very busy, so you may need to book your charter well in advance to secure a berth in the port of call. You'll also need to consider the additional costs of attending the event, such as tickets, transportation, and accommodations.
Planning to Charter a Superyacht in Different Weather Conditions
When planning your superyacht charter, you may need to consider the weather conditions at your chosen destination. The Mediterranean has a mild climate, with warm summers and mild winters, while the Caribbean has a tropical climate, with hot and humid weather during the dry season, and frequent rains during the wet season.
If you're planning your charter during the summer months , you may need to be prepared for high temperatures and strong sun. Make sure to bring plenty of sunscreen and lightweight clothing to stay cool and comfortable.
In the winter months , you might need to be prepared for cooler temperatures and the possibility of rain. Try to pack warm clothing and rain gear, and be prepared to adjust your itinerary if the weather turns bad.

With privacy and flexibility remaining high on UHNW’s vacation checklist, chartering a superyacht is more appealing than ever. Picture, your own boat, a dedicated crew, a fully customizable route and a select group of your nearest and dearest – what could be better? However, the world of private yacht chartering can be as elusive as it is luxurious, making hiring your own boat a tricky process – especially for first-timers.
From the pros and cons of enlisting the help of a broker and choosing the perfect vessel, to understanding when to book and planning your itinerary – not to mention the all-important question of how much it costs to charter a luxury yacht – there are plenty of hurdles before you reach the water. To help you and your guests enjoy a worry-free vacation out on the ocean, we has compiled a comprehensive guide to chartering a superyacht.

What is a yacht charter?
If you’re new to the world of yacht chartering, even the language can be alienating. A yacht charter is the process of exclusively hiring a yacht for yourself and your guests.
While most charters are for leisure, be it with friends or family, some individuals and companies choose to hire a yacht for business-related reasons, with the undivided service and uncompromised privacy making boats an excellent place to hold meetings and conferences, while simultaneously impressing clients.
The length of a yacht charter depends entirely on your needs; some choose to book for a long weekend or even just a matter of hours if hosting a meeting, whereas others opt for an extended vacation and may charter a yacht for several weeks or even months. Regardless of duration or motive, privately hiring a yacht is always considered a charter.

What is a yacht charter broker?
Using a broker to charter a yacht is at your discretion; however, if it is your first time chartering, using a broker is highly recommended – especially when hiring a larger-than-life superyacht. Yacht brokers will draw on a large network of connections and extensive industry knowledge to help find the best vessel for your unique requirements, as well as the best price.
Once you’ve had an initial consultation, a broker will typically offer a selection of yachts that suit your needs and help you make a final decision. From here, the yacht broker will handle the entire booking process, from securing the initial boat booking to planning each element of your onboard itinerary, including docking points. A reputable yacht charter broker will also be available to contact throughout the duration of your time on board, giving you and your guests complete peace of mind.

Occasionally, first-time charters mistakenly think that booking directly will shave some digits off the total cost, but it actually falls on the yacht owner/charter company to pay the broker fees – not the charterer. In fact, you will often find that a broker will rely on their insider connections to secure the best deal for their clients.
When it comes to choosing a yacht broker you have plenty to choose from, but names like Burgess , Fraser and Northrop & Jonson dominate the superyacht realm. Some people opt for a freelance yacht charter broker, but we’d suggest only heading down this route if you have a pre-existing relationship or they come highly recommended by someone you trust. You should also ensure that any broker you work with is a member of the MYBA Worldwide Yachting Association.

How to choose a yacht
![superyachts rates bold explorer yacht by silver yachts](https://elitetraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/8/2020/04/Screenshot-2020-04-17-at-10.21.01.png)
While your yacht broker will do the hard work when it comes to choosing a yacht, calling upon their wide boat knowledge to present a selection of yachts to you, to be able to do this properly they will need a solid understanding of your preferences, requirements and budget.
The key things you should consider when chartering a superyacht are: the number of guests you want to bring on board (remember the legal limit for most yachts is 12 overnight guests, including personal staff); whether or not the yacht needs to be child-friendly, the amount of indoor/outdoor space you’d like on board; where you’d like to travel; and the onboard amenities you’d like – for example, is an indoor swimming pool a priority or does a dancefloor sound more appealing?
The type of yachting vacation you’re seeking is also important when choosing a boat. For intrepid travelers with a taste for adventure, a sturdier explorer yacht such as Silver Yachts’ Bold or Ragnar by Royal Niestern Sand would be more suitable than a classic yacht, designed for luxury and comfort.
However, if it is your first time chartering a superyacht, don’t feel concerned about going in clueless – your yacht broker will be able to guide you through every step of choosing a vessel.

Bareboat vs skippered superyacht charter
When chartering a luxury yacht, you will sometimes be given the choice between a ‘bareboat’ or ‘skippered’ charter – bareboat being a crewless charter and skippered including a full complement of staff. However, you will find that when verging into superyacht territory, all charters are skippered for both your safety and comfort.
Typical crew members will include a captain, engineer, second and third officers, bosun, chef, chief stew, and one or more stewards. Your broker can help explain the roles of each, as well as support with hiring additional crew members.
For example, if you have a taste for adventure, ensure that there is a watersports instructor within the crew. Looking for a more relaxing onboard experience? Ask your broker to look into securing a masseuse for your journey.
When to book a superyacht charter
When to begin booking a yacht charter is an important question. Leading charter company Northrop & Johnson recommends reaching out to a broker no later than 10 months in advance if you want to travel during peak times (July and August in the summer season, Christmas and New Year during winter), and three to six months ahead for quieter periods. However, with popular yachts booking up as much as a year in advance, it’s advisable to reach out to a broker at least 12 months ahead of time if you have specific boat or date requirements.
When booking in advance, remember that local events will heavily impact availability. For example, if you’re planning a European tour, take note of events such as the Cannes Film Festival and the Monaco Grand Prix when both vessels and docking spaces will be in high demand.

How much does it cost to charter a superyacht?
It’s no secret that yacht charters are expensive, with many first-timers unprepared for the hidden costs. It’s generally accepted that the biggest price indicator of a yacht charter is boat size – so if you’re heading into superyacht territory, expect an impressive fee.
However, other factors will impact the cost of chartering a superyacht , such as crew reputation, ship design and the age of the vessel. For example, Fraser Yachts offer a week on the 298.5-ft Moonlight II which was first built in 2005 from €750,000 (approximately $815,000), but prices for the 278-ft Solandge, which was built in 2013 and refitted in 2019, begin at €1m ($1.1m) per week.
Although some charter costs are inclusive, meaning expenses such as captain and crew, fuel, food and drink are included, you’ll find that a ‘plus expenses’ charter is more common. With such charters, only the crew and ship are included in the price, an ‘Advance Provisioning Allowance’ (APA) is used to cover the necessary extras and is usually around 30% of the weekly charter fee. What the APA doesn’t cover, however, is crew gratuity which, although given at your discretion, is very much expected, with the going rate around 15-20%.
To avoid tarnishing your vacation with unexpected fees and charges, ask your broker for a full price breakdown beforehand, including any potential docking fees and additional taxes.

How much does it cost to charter a yacht?
There are many things to consider and first time charterers can be left confused, that's why we've created a comprehensive guide to yacht charter prices (with a checklist).
![superyachts rates charter cost explained banner](https://www-worldwideboat-com.exactdn.com/wp-content/themes/worldwide-boat/images/charter-cost-explained-1.jpg?strip=all&lossy=1&quality=92&resize=800%2C281&ssl=1)
The good news: It’s easy to grasp the basics of yacht charter pricing. And with one of our experts in your corner, we can help you more accurately estimate the cost of your next once-in-a-lifetime vacation.
The cost of a yacht charter is dependent on a number of factors, including the type of yacht, the charter destination, local taxes, and the base cost. (If the yacht has a celebrity owner, well that too, can add to the cost.)
Therefore, yacht charters have a wide range of base prices. That’s why charters can cost from $10,000 per week on smaller sailing yachts and catamarans, up to $150,000+ per week on the most luxurious motor superyachts.
What else can you expect to pay? This overview – a part of our planning resource, the Charter Advice Guide – offers an in-depth look at charter yacht costs.
Yacht Charter Price Structure: “All-Inclusive” vs “Plus Expenses”
In the world of yachting, two types of crewed yacht charters are available to you – “All-Inclusive” and “Plus Expenses” charter experiences. What do these terms mean exactly? Here’s a quick look:
- All-Inclusive Yacht Charters – Some charters (mainly catamaran and monohull charters in the Virgin Islands) offer all-inclusive rates. That means rates are based on the number of guests, and they include all food and drink, water sports, and fuel costs. Dockage and taxes, though, are usually charged separately.
- Plus Expenses Charters – Rates for larger motor yachts do not include running expenses, which must be paid separately. For these luxury charters, the base price is for the yacht only. Additional expenses, i.e. food, bar, fuel, dockage, port taxes, and other expenses, are charged separately. Most frequently, the running expenses are paid by an Advance Provisioning Allowance, or APA, which is typically 35% of the base price; this is an amount that’s paid prior to the charter.
Our chart below offers a quick overview of what’s included in both of these types of charters.
![superyachts rates charter cost comparison chart](https://www-worldwideboat-com.exactdn.com/wp-content/themes/worldwide-boat/images/charter-cost-comparison-chart.jpg?strip=all&lossy=1&quality=92&resize=700%2C896&ssl=1)
Average Yacht Charter Cost: Base Prices
What can you expect to pay for a catamaran, a sailing vessel, or motored yacht? Here’s a quick overview of the average cost to rent a yacht (not including extra expenses) for the most common types available:
Average Weekly Sailing Charter Rates | Sailing Yacht |

Average Weekly Catamaran Charter Rates | Catamaran |
Average Weekly Motor Yacht Charter Rates | Motor Yachts |
Factors that Affect Yacht Charter Prices
Since charter yachts are privately owned, prices are set by the owner. This can explain, in part, the wide range of differences in price between boats of similar lengths. Yet, several other factors can significantly impact price, including:
- The Yacht – The year the boat was built, the builder, previous owners, and the boat’s selection of water toys can also increase the cost of a yacht. Boats can also develop a reputation, i.e. the largest or most luxurious, or having a famous builder or previous owner. Reputation can also affect pricing.
- Season – Prices typically increase in the high season – i.e. high summer in the Mediterranean or winter in the Caribbean – and decrease in low seasons.
- Destination – Your charter destination also plays a role in charter cost. For example, prices increase in areas without large charter fleets (i.e. the Galapagos), whereas Bahamas yacht charters, BVI charters , or Mediterranean yacht charter are priced more competitively.
Additional Costs Considerations on Yacht Charter
In addition to the cost associated with running the yacht and provisioning, there are a number of other costs that must be considered. These are the most significant:
Advanced Provisioning Allowance
The APA on Plus Expenses charters equals roughly 35% of the yacht’s base price. This is a fee that’s collected prior to charter, and it’s similar to an expense account the captain can access during the charter. At the end of the charter, you will receive a detailed accounting of your APA account, plus any unused APA funds in cash.
In the case of overages, you may be required to replenish the APA account during the charter. This can be done with cash, although many choose to set up accounts with their charter brokers , which can be accessed if requested by the captain.
Taxes and Value Added Tax (VAT)
Most boats – whether all-inclusive or Plus Expenses – will not include local taxes or a Value Added Tax into their charter rate. The charterer will be responsible for paying those taxes. Taxes range significantly by destination; here’s a look at some of yachting’s most popular destinations:
- The Bahamas – Tax: 4% plus 10% VAT
- BVI – Tax: between $6 and $16 per person per day, depending on the flag of the boat
- Croatia – VAT: 13%
- Florida – Tax: 6% for Broward County, 7% for Miami-Dade County
- France – VAT: 20%, however, 10% can be applied when an itinerary includes International Waters
- Greece – VAT: 12%
- Italy – VAT: 22%, however 6.6% (over 24m) and 8.8% (under 24m) can be applied when an itinerary includes International Waters
- Montenegro – NO VAT
- New England – NO TAX
- Spain – VAT: 21%
- Turkey – NO VAT
Charterers can purchase cancellation and curtailment insurance – which is similar to traveler’s insurance. This insurance can help cover costs if a charterer must cancel or shorten the charter. Charter brokers can help you weigh insurance options, and often offer several different options.
Crew Gratuity
While crew gratuity is certainly not mandatory, it is recommended, particularly if you were truly impressed with your charter experience. In general, crew gratuity is roughly 15-20% of the base charter rate, which is handed to the captain at the conclusion of your charter.
Delivery Fees
While these fees do not apply on most charters, you may be asked to pay delivery costs if you are not chartering in the yacht’s normal cruising ground. In most cases, you will only be required to cover the fuel for the trip.

Additional Charter Cost FAQs
What are standard private charter yacht prices?
There are a number of factors that affect charter yacht pricing. However, on average, a week-long private yacht charter costs anywhere from $10,000 on luxurious sailing yachts and catamarans, and up to $150,000 for superyachts.
What affects charter yacht prices?
There are several things that influence how much your yacht charter will cost. The type of vessel, charter destination, length of trip, base cost, time of year, and local taxes all make a difference.
How much does it cost for a crewed vessel?
Charter yacht prices do increase when hiring a crew along with the boat. At Worldwide Boat, we offer two types of crewed charter experiences: all-inclusive and plus expenses. An all-inclusive charter yacht includes accommodation for all guests, food and drink, water sport activities, and fuel costs – dockage fees and taxes are charged separately. A plus expenses experience accounts for just the yacht’s base price. Things like food, drinks, fuel, dockages, taxes, and other expenses are charged separately and are usually estimated to be about 35% of the base price.
What’s included in all-inclusive boat charters?
At Worldwide Boat, your all-inclusive charter experience includes a diligent and friendly crew, water toys, food, drinks, fuel, water and electric services, and occasionally diving experiences.
What are some additional charter boat costs to consider?
After finding a base price you’re comfortable with and evaluating your package, you’ll also want to consider delivery fees, crew gratuity, insurance fees, taxes, and Advanced Provisioning Allowance rates. If you are responsible for these fees, your crew will handle the necessary transactions on your behalf.
What does it cost to rent a 100- foot yacht charter?
This depends on what type of vessel you’re looking at and how long you’ll need it for. The average weekly cost of a 100-foot sailing yacht is between $50,000-100,000. A weekly 80-foot catamaran charter runs around $40,000-100,000, and a week-long 100-foot motor yacht rental is anywhere between $50,000-80,000.
Does the price to rent a yacht change depending on what type of boat it is?
Yes. Worldwide Boat offers sailing yachts, catamarans, and motor yachts. All of these vessels have different capabilities, but there are other factors that determine the price beyond what type of boat you choose. The year the boat was built, owner, availability of water toys, onboard amenities, and the ship’s reputation can all change how much the ship is priced at.
When is the high season for yacht charters?
The price of a yacht fluctuates depending on the season. A Mediterranean yacht charter cost rises in the summer and drops in the winter, whereas Caribbean boat charter prices are high during the winter and lower in the summer months.
How does my destination affect charter yacht cost?
The more remote an area is, the more expensive it will be to charter a yacht there. That’s because prices go up in areas that have fewer boats. If you were to travel somewhere like the Galapagos, which isn’t a typical yacht destination, you’d pay more than you would if you were traveling to the Caribbean.
How much do I tip the crew when reviewing my yacht charter expenses?
It’s not required that you tip your crew, but it is recommended and appreciated. If you had an enjoyable experience it’s considered polite to tip your crew anywhere from 15-20% at the end of your charter.

How much does it cost to purchase a superyacht?
Superyachts are amongst one of the world’s most exclusive purchases, with the finest vessels costing hundreds of millions of dollars. A luxury yacht is the ultimate lifestyle purchase for the world’s richest, offering flexibility, exclusivity, and the freedom to discover the world's hidden gems in unparalleled luxury.
While owning a superyacht comes with a plethora of benefits, many aspects come into play when deciding to purchase one. Working with a knowledgeable yacht broker, such as the team at Yachting Partners International, can help assist you in your search, by providing expert advice and guidance throughout your entire yachting journey.
![superyachts rates Tranquility yacht for sale deck](https://res.cloudinary.com/ypi/image/upload/c_scale,dpr_auto,f_auto,q_auto,w_auto/v1/web/images/tranquility/16_khugq2.jpg)
The cost of buying a superyacht can vary considerably depending on the size, yacht and amenities you wish to purchase.
In general, the smaller the yacht, the lower the price, with superyachts of 24m or more usually attracting asking prices of over €1m, going up to an average of €11.42m in the 40m-50m category, €24.15m in the 50m-70m category and an average of €81.2m for yachts of 70m+.
Purchasing a motor yacht also tends to cost more than a sailing yacht. However, this is often because many sailing yachts on the market are older; a brand-new sailing yacht will still demand a high price.
It is also important to note that semi-custom yachts are often less expensive than customised superyachts. Of course, yachts decked out with beach clubs, sports courts, spas, fitness suites, and a toy box full of the latest water toys can cost much more.
Jeff Bezos's new 412-foot vessel is estimated to cost about US$500 million to build, and Elon Musk's first luxury Model Y Tesla yacht is ready to set sail, costing around $700 million.
What are the benefits of owning a superyacht?
An indication of prestige, few things match the experience of owning a superyacht. Each year, the world's best shipyards are taking shipbuilding to new levels of luxury, implementing the best design materials, advanced technologies, world-class amenities and environment-friendly features to meet the needs of discerning yacht owners.
Almost all luxury superyachts boast elegant onboard interiors, spacious saloons, and sublime sundecks. However, the world's largest superyachts offer amenities that can often rival a luxury resort, including swimming pools, helipads, wellness centres, private cinemas, beach clubs, sports courts, dive centres and more.
There is also the unparalleled level of service that goes into the onboard experience. From onboard chefs to specialist spas, the service goes above and beyond.
Superyacht owners are also treated with privacy and freedom, allowing them to beat the crowds and explore the world's blue water havens as and when they please.
![superyachts rates Creole Sailing Yacht](https://res.cloudinary.com/ypi/image/upload/c_scale,dpr_auto,f_auto,q_auto,w_auto/v1/web/news/creole-sailing-yacht-4.jpg)
The current superyacht market
Superyacht sales have boomed throughout the pandemic. According to figures in the latest edition of Boat International's Global Order Book, more than 1,200 superyachts are scheduled to be built in 2022 – a rise of 25% from last year. Currently, the total number of sales for 2022 stands at 33, with a combined value of €418m.
According to the Superyacht Group, the number of vessels delivered has grown 50% from 2020, with more than 700 superyachts sold in 2021.
The superyacht market boom is said to be a reaction to the pandemic as UHNW individuals seek ultra-private forms of transportation and accommodation, prioritising safety and hygiene.
Another factor to consider is the simultaneous advancement of technology and the fact that people can work from anywhere in the world, be it from home or the sundeck of their yacht whilst on vacation in the Bahamas.
Are there any hidden costs to owning a superyacht?
There's a range of extra costs to consider when purchasing a superyacht. Once you agree on a deal with your yacht broker, you can expect to pay around 10% of the yacht's value in annual operational costs, including crew, deck, engineering, fuel, insurance, maintenance and harbour expenses. Approximately 45% of the yearly budget is crew related, making up a large proportion of the overall costs.
Most owners choose to instruct an experienced yacht management company, such as the team at Yachting Partners International, who manage the day-to-day operations of the yacht, including crew, finance, compliance, maintenance and refits. This provides owners with worry-free yacht ownership enabling them to spend more time doing what they love.

Should I buy or charter a superyacht?
Depending on your preferences, many will vouch for owning a superyacht over chartering one. Of course, there are plenty of perks to chartering a yacht, and it's entirely down to the individual's needs and what they're looking for. For a prearranged vacation, chartering a yacht is a breeze with far less responsibility than owning a yacht.
However, nothing can beat the spontaneity and flexibility that comes with yacht ownership. You can travel on a whim with minimal notice with a bespoke itinerary tailored to your needs. The familiarity of having your own captain and crew is another perk as they can offer customised experiences based on your preferences.
Should I buy a new build yacht?
Purchasing a new build yacht is another approach to consider. The beauty of a new build means you can customise a superyacht to your style before it's even been built, meaning you can create your dream yacht and add just about anything – from helicopter landing pads to open-air cinemas.
Many billionaires have stamped their image on their vessels. Apple founder Steve Jobs created a sleek minimalist yacht reminiscent of his brand’s iconic products, while chemicals tycoon Sir Jim Ratcliffe designed an expedition-style ship that can carry helicopters and mini-subs.
However, it is worth bearing in mind that building a superyacht from scratch will invariably be more costly than buying a ready-built yacht. According to Forbes, a custom built 100-metre superyacht costs around $275 million. Additionally, custom yachts have a far longer lead-time, taking several years to design and build.
Alternatively, another popular option is a semi-custom superyacht. This allows for the best of both worlds, offering faster lead times and reduced costs, as well as the flexibility to personalise the yacht to your exact tastes and lifestyle.
Building a custom superyacht can be a superb experience when you work alongside a reputable yacht brokerage. Highly skilled agents are able to assist with all aspects of project management, including the technical and financial performance, surveys, classification, flag and technical regulatory paperwork and the delivery of the yacht.

Crew is one of the largest expenses on a superyacht and critical to the owner’s enjoyment of their vessel. As the largest crew agency in the world, we know crew. Our cost calculator contains customized crew lists for yachts ranging from 80ft to 600ft with salary information based on our reference verified salary data.
Our users also have the ability to completely tailor the crew list to the specific needs, schedule and requirements of their vessel. Each yacht is unique and may have specific owner requests in addition to the yacht’s safe manning requirements.
Management of the supplemental crew costs and strategic budgeting can help avoid significant overspend on categories such as food and uniform. This tool contains default values based on our industry expertise and recommended budget for an efficiently and safely run superyacht.
To learn more about each crew position in detail, including salary ranges, please visit our yacht department directory .
Drag the sliders to modify your results. These are not linear scales and we expect most yachts to operate within the 20-80% window. Above 80% and below 20% costs increase or decrease at exaggerated levels and we only see numbers in these levels in very rare circumstances.
This sunburst diagram is interactive. You can click into each block to see the expense break down and mouse over each block for more details.
Our chart of accounts displays seven major categories, 20 sub-categories plus a further 80 detail categories for a total of 107.
Our yacht operating cost calculator is now on it’s third major revision. We start with actual yacht expense data from our yacht management accountants and then generate formulas to extrapolate out the budget for a wide range of yachts. We have been providing accounting services to large yachts for the past 18 years.
Our operating cost calculator is tuned for yachts from 80 to 600 feet. We find operating variables create the largest variances for yachts smaller than 100 feet and larger than 250 feet. We have tested the numbers the most in the range from 100 to 250 feet.
Our budget calculator factors in the fuel burn for a range of engine sizes typically seen installed on yachts by length. By dragging the green “fuel dockage” slider to the right you will increase the projected fuel burn rate and therefore the budget cost for fuel. Our default position would be for a typical displacement fuel burn. Position the slider in the 60-80% range for fuel projections for planning hulls.
Our default values produce a budget number that we believe is generous to run a yacht to a high standard. Perfect is a very expensive word to use in the yachting industry where standards are already high. Moving the crew and maintenance sliders to 80% will provide an “industry best” quality of crew and give them the maintenance budget to operate to a very high standard. If you need to go over the 80% area then you may have unusually labor intensive equipment on the yacht.
Yes, our yacht operating cost calculator can output a budget suitable for this situation. Adjust the owner use to 2 (minimum value), owner slider to 0, crew slider to 10%, Administration to 10%, Fuel and Dockage to 0, Maintenance to 10% and then Capital Repairs to 0. This will remove all of the large charges associated with owner use and vessel movement but leave the essential base maintenance and insurance in place.
Lift on and float in yacht transport is a popular way to transport yachts across large ocean passage. The yachts that this service certainly applies to are ones that may not have the motoring range or structural integrity for blue ocean cruising. The cost of transporting a yacht twice per year is put into our budget once the “Fuel Dockage” slider hits 75%. If your yacht has the range we recommend self-sufficient ocean passages whenever possible. Whilst the transport companies sell their services based upon reportedly well oiled operated schedules the reality is that your yacht may stay waiting for pickup for a week or more with no compensation due. When factoring in all secondary factors of self-sufficient passages (increased fuel, maintenance, potential storm damage, crew time off, extra delivery crew) compared with transporting your yacht (insurance, potential loading / unloading damage, loss of schedule control, no work whilst underway, crew flights, crew accommodation) we believe that there is a 100% premium associated with float in transport and a 75% premium with lift on transport compared with self-powered.
Abandoned yachts crash in value. We recommend that even if you are trying to sell your yacht that you use the yacht for a minimum of two weeks per year so that systems are tested and working every six months. There is nothing worse for a yacht than not being used. If you truly are not going to use the yacht then you should sell it immediately for the first genuine offer as every dollar you put into maintenance will not be recovered at the time of the sale.
We did not build this version with sailing yachts in mind. Early in our development of this version we decided to exclude sailing yachts as a few of the major cost drivers scale very differently for sailing yachts compared with motor yachts. For example: To calculate paint costs we reviewed the surface area of over 100 large yachts and created a formula for painted surface area to length. Sailing yachts just don’t scale in a consistent way. Similarly crew numbers don’t scale in the same manner that they do for motor yachts. If there is sufficient demand we may build a sailing selector switch into a future version of this tool.
We hate to hear when yacht owners were told by their broker to factor in 10% of the purchase price to operate the yacht. This over used saying is sadly right occasionally (particularly for newer yachts in the $20-30M range)… but just because a broken watch tells the right time twice a day you shouldn’t rely upon it to tell the time. As yachts get older their capital value decreases but their maintenance costs increase. There is no way that a fixed 10% of purchase cost rule can be true… if your broker told you this rule then you need a new yacht broker… we know some good ones. 😊

How Much Does It Cost to Charter a Yacht? (Updated Prices/Rates)
- September 20, 2023
Exploring the open waters on a private yacht offers unparalleled luxury and freedom. The cost of chartering a yacht varies based on factors like yacht size, destination, and duration.
Beyond expenses, understanding the elements influencing pricing can help in making an informed decision for your dream yachting experience. Let’s unpack these prices in this guide!
How Much Does It Cost to Charter a Yacht?
Yacht rentals encompass a broad spectrum of starting prices. Thus, charters begin at around $10,000 weekly for compact sailboats and catamarans, while the pinnacle of opulence, motor superyachts, can exceed $150,000 weekly or more.
What Are the Two Types of Yacht Charter Price Structure?
In yachting, two crewed charter options exist: “All-Inclusive” and “Plus Expenses” experiences. What do these terms entail? Let’s take a brief look to understand them better:
All-Inclusive Yacht Charters
Certain charters, particularly those for catamarans and monohulls in the Virgin Islands, provide all-inclusive pricing. This covers guests, meals, drinks, water sports, and fuel expenses. However, dockage and taxes are typically billed separately from the main rate.
![superyachts rates Cruising on a yacht](https://howmuchdoesitcost.io/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Cruising-on-a-yacht.jpg)
Plus Expenses Charters
Larger motor yacht rates don’t cover operating costs, which require separate payment. For upscale charters, the initial cost encompasses the yacht alone. Extra expenses like food, bar, fuel, dockage, and taxes are billed independently.
Often, these costs are covered by an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), which typically is 35% of the base rate, paid before the charter starts.
What Are the Different Factors That Affect Yacht Charter Prices?
Embarking on a yacht charter voyage is an exciting endeavor that promises luxury, adventure, and the thrill of exploring open waters. As you set out to plan your dream yachting experience, it’s essential to understand the various elements that influence yacht charter prices.
From the type and size of the yacht to the destination and duration of the charter, several key factors come into play, shaping the cost of your maritime escapade.
Yacht Type and Size
The type and size of the yacht you choose are fundamental determinants of the charter cost. Yachts come in various categories, including motor yachts, sailing yachts, catamarans, and monohulls, each offering distinct features and amenities.
![superyachts rates Oculus Yacht sailing](https://howmuchdoesitcost.io/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Oculus-Yacht-sailing.jpg)
Motor yachts often offer more space, speed, and modern conveniences, which can contribute to higher charter rates. On the other hand, sailing yachts and catamarans provide a more traditional sailing experience and can be an appealing option for those seeking a more relaxed pace.
Destination and Itinerary
The geographical location you intend to explore significantly impacts the charter price. Popular yachting destinations like the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and the South Pacific have varying demand levels throughout the year, influencing pricing accordingly.
High-season periods, characterized by pleasant weather and bustling tourism, can lead to higher rates, while off-peak seasons might offer more budget-friendly options. Moreover, some destinations require longer travel distances or involve additional permits and fees, all of which can contribute to the overall cost.
Charter Duration
The duration of your yacht charter plays a pivotal role in determining the final price. Charter rates are typically quoted every week, with options for shorter or longer durations available.
Extended charters might offer more favorable rates per week compared to shorter getaways. Moreover, some yachts may have minimum charter durations during peak seasons, so it’s essential to consider your desired travel duration when budgeting for your yacht charter.
![superyachts rates Hotel Quality Bedroom](https://howmuchdoesitcost.io/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Hotel-Quality-Bedroom.jpg)
Time of Year
The time of year you plan your yacht charter adventure can significantly affect pricing. Yachting destinations experience high and low seasons, influenced by weather patterns, holidays, and local events.
High-season periods, often coinciding with pleasant weather and vacation periods, tend to command premium prices due to increased demand. Alternatively, opting for an off-peak or shoulder season can result in more affordable charter rates while still enjoying a delightful yachting experience.
Yacht Amenities and Services
The onboard amenities and services provided by the yacht contribute to the overall charter cost. Yachts equipped with luxurious features such as spacious cabins, gourmet kitchens, Jacuzzis, water toys, and professional crews tend to have higher base rates.
The quality of service, crew expertise, and additional offerings can elevate the charter experience but may also add to the total price.
Crew and Staff
The crew and staff onboard play a crucial role in enhancing your yacht charter journey. The size and expertise of the crew, including captain, chef, deckhands, and stewards, can impact the cost.
![superyachts rates Luxurious dining experience](https://howmuchdoesitcost.io/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Luxurious-dining-experience.jpg)
A highly skilled and attentive crew can provide exceptional service, ensuring a memorable and comfortable experience throughout your charter. While these services contribute to the cost, they often contribute significantly to the overall enjoyment of your yachting adventure.
All-Inclusive Versus Plus Expenses
Yacht charters offer different pricing structures, with “All-Inclusive” and “Plus Expenses” options. All-inclusive charters encompass costs like food, drinks, water activities, and fuel in the base price, simplifying budgeting and planning.
Conversely, Plus Expenses charters have a base rate covering the yacht alone, with additional costs for provisions, fuel, dockage, and other expenses. Understanding the pricing model that aligns with your preferences and needs is essential for accurate budgeting.
Running Expenses and Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA)
For larger motor yachts, operating costs are often separate from the base rate. These expenses encompass food, beverages, fuel, dockage, port taxes, and more. Typically covered by an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), which is around 35% of the base price, these costs are paid before the charter begins.
This approach allows for flexibility in provisioning and ensures that operational expenses are adequately covered during the journey.
![superyachts rates Living room in a Yacht](https://howmuchdoesitcost.io/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Living-room-in-a-Yacht.jpg)
Additional Costs Considerations in Charting a Yacht
Embarking on a yacht charter promises a luxurious and unforgettable experience, but it’s essential to consider not only the base charter cost but also the additional expenses that may arise during your journey.
Beyond the initial price, there are various factors and costs to keep in mind to ensure a seamless and well-budgeted yachting adventure.
Operational Expenses
While the base charter cost covers the yacht itself, operational expenses are often separate. These expenses encompass various aspects of the charter, including fuel, provisioning, dockage, port fees, and more.
Depending on the charter type and destination, these operational costs can vary significantly. Understanding these expenses is crucial for accurate budgeting and to ensure that you have the necessary funds to cover them.
Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA)
For larger motor yachts, operational expenses are often covered by an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA). This allowance, typically around 35% of the base charter price, is paid upfront before the charter begins.
![superyachts rates Recreational activity on a Yacht](https://howmuchdoesitcost.io/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Recreational-activity-on-a-Yacht.jpg)
The APA serves as a fund that the crew uses to cover expenses throughout the journey, such as food, beverages, fuel, and other operational costs. Any remaining funds from the APA are usually returned to you at the end of the charter.
Clear communication with the yacht’s crew regarding APA usage is essential to manage expenses effectively.
Crew Gratuity
While crew gratuity is discretionary, it’s customary to reward the hard work and exceptional service provided by the yacht’s crew. The recommended gratuity amount usually ranges from 10% to 20% of the base charter price.
The gratuity is typically given to the captain, who then distributes it among the crew members. Expressing your appreciation for the crew’s efforts through gratuity ensures a positive rapport and acknowledges their dedication to making your charter experience memorable.
Food and Beverages
For charters that operate on a “Plus Expenses” basis, provisioning for meals and beverages is an important consideration. Discuss your culinary preferences and dietary restrictions with the yacht’s chef before the charter to ensure that your needs are met.
![superyachts rates inflatable slides in a Yacht](https://howmuchdoesitcost.io/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/inflatable-slides-in-a-Yacht.jpg)
The cost of food and beverages can vary based on your preferences, the number of guests, and the duration of the charter. Incorporating this aspect into your budgeting allows you to enjoy delectable meals without unexpected financial surprises.
Water Toys and Activities
Many yachts offer a range of water toys and recreational activities to enhance your charter experience. These can include jet skis, paddleboards, snorkeling gear, fishing equipment, and more.
While these amenities provide entertainment and excitement, they may come with an additional cost. Inquire about the availability and pricing of water toys and activities in advance to plan for any desired experiences.
Berth and Port Fees
When visiting different ports and marinas during your charter, you may encounter berth and port fees. These fees are associated with mooring the yacht in specific locations and can vary depending on the destination and the amenities offered by the port.
Being aware of these fees and including them in your budgeting ensures that you’re prepared for any unexpected costs that may arise during your journey.

What Are the Different Types of Yachts?
Embarking on a yacht charter opens up a world of luxury and adventure, with a range of yacht types to choose from. Each type offers unique features, amenities, and sailing experiences.
Understanding the various types of yachts available can help you select the perfect vessel for your dream maritime journey.

Motor yachts are known for their speed, power, and luxurious features. These yachts are equipped with powerful engines that allow for swift and comfortable cruising. Motor yachts offer spacious interiors, state-of-the-art amenities, and ample deck space for relaxation and entertainment.
With a focus on comfort and convenience, motor yachts are ideal for those who prioritize a smooth sailing experience and desire modern luxuries.
Sailing Yachts

![superyachts rates Closer shot](https://howmuchdoesitcost.io/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Closer-shot.jpg)
Sailing yachts come in various sizes, from smaller vessels perfect for intimate charters to larger yachts with multiple cabins for group travel.
Catamarans are characterized by their twin hulls, offering enhanced stability and spacious interiors [ 1 ]. These yachts are known for their comfort, especially when at anchor, and are popular choices for families and groups.
Catamarans often have multiple cabins, spacious living areas, and outdoor lounging spaces, making them ideal for those seeking a relaxed and sociable charter experience.
Monohull yachts feature a single hull, offering a traditional and authentic sailing experience. These yachts are known for their graceful lines and timeless charm. While they may have slightly less interior space compared to catamarans, monohulls excel in their sailing performance and agility, making them a favorite among sailing purists who appreciate the art of navigating the waters under wind power.
![superyachts rates The Bow](https://howmuchdoesitcost.io/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/The-Bow.jpg)
Superyachts
Superyachts epitomize luxury and opulence. These massive vessels often exceed 100 feet in length and feature a plethora of amenities, including multiple decks, swimming pools, Jacuzzis, helipads, and more.
Superyachts can accommodate larger groups and are often equipped with a crew to cater to every need. While the charter rates for superyachts are typically higher, the level of luxury and extravagance they offer is unmatched.
Expedition Yachts
Expedition yachts are designed for those seeking off-the-beaten-path adventures. These rugged vessels are equipped to explore remote destinations and endure challenging conditions.
Expedition yachts combine the comforts of a luxury yacht with the capability to navigate through polar regions, remote islands, and exotic locales. ![superyachts rates Luxury Yacht](https://howmuchdoesitcost.io/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Luxury-Yacht.jpg)
Classic Yachts
Classic yachts evoke a sense of nostalgia and history. These yachts often have elegant lines, rich wooden interiors, and a timeless charm that harks back to a bygone era of yachting.
While they may not boast the same modern amenities as newer yachts, their unique character and craftsmanship make them a favorite among those who appreciate the vintage allure of sailing.
Is Chartering a Yacht Worth It?
Chartering a yacht offers an unparalleled experience of luxury, freedom, and exploration on the open waters. The opportunity to tailor your journey, enjoy personalized service, and discover unique destinations makes yacht charters a remarkable investment in memorable experiences.
![superyachts rates The Bow](https://howmuchdoesitcost.io/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/The-Bow-.jpg)
While the cost can vary, the chance to escape the ordinary, indulge in stunning surroundings, and create lasting memories with friends or family often makes chartering a yacht well worth the investment for those seeking a truly extraordinary vacation.
In the world of yacht charters, costs vary based on factors like yacht type, destination, and services. Understanding these elements helps in budgeting and making informed decisions. Table of Contents
Short Answer
The cost of a superyacht can vary greatly depending on the size, amenities, and features the yacht includes.
Generally, a superyacht can cost anywhere from a few million dollars to over $100 million.
The cost of the yacht can also depend on the type of materials used and the level of customization.
For example, a superyacht with a helipad, multiple decks, and luxurious furnishings can cost significantly more than a basic superyacht.
What Is a Superyacht?
A superyacht is a luxurious, multi-story, multi-million dollar vessel, typically used for leisure and pleasure-seeking.
They are often custom-made to meet a buyer’s exact specifications, and can feature a variety of amenities, from helipads to private spas and cinemas.
They are usually powered by multiple diesel engines, and can have a top speed of over 20 knots.
Superyachts are owned by some of the world’s wealthiest individuals, and are often used for luxury cruises, parties, or even business meetings.
The cost of a superyacht can vary greatly depending on its size, amenities, and other features.
Smaller superyachts can range in price from a few million dollars up to tens of millions.
Larger vessels, meanwhile, can cost hundreds of millions of dollars.
The most expensive superyacht ever built, the History Supreme, sold for a staggering $4.5 billion.
Ultimately, the cost of a superyacht is determined by its buyer’s individual preferences and budget.
Smaller Superyacht Prices
![superyachts rates](https://boatpursuits.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/how-much-does-a-superyacht-cost-1694572590.1198802-300x152.jpg)
When it comes to the cost of a superyacht, it is important to consider the size of the vessel.
Smaller superyachts, such as those measuring up to 50 meters, can range in price from a few million dollars to tens of millions of dollars.
These vessels are usually built with luxury in mind, featuring features like multiple decks, salons, bedrooms, bathrooms, and other amenities.
Many also come equipped with a variety of recreational features such as swimming pools, spas, and sports facilities.
Because of their smaller size, these superyachts are typically less expensive to maintain and operate than larger vessels.
They are also easier to transport and maneuver.
However, they don’t offer the same level of luxury and amenities as larger superyachts.
The cost of a smaller superyacht will also depend on its age, condition, and the features it includes.
For instance, newer models may come with more modern features and amenities, such as satellite TV and Wi-Fi, which can add to the overall cost.
Similarly, superyachts with higher-end materials, such as marble or teak, will also cost more.
In addition to the purchase price, buyers should also consider the cost of maintenance, repairs, and upgrades.
Smaller superyachts may require more frequent maintenance, as well as additional costs for fuel and staffing.
For those looking to purchase a smaller superyacht, it is important to factor in these additional costs when deciding on a budget.
Larger Superyacht Prices
When it comes to superyachts, size really does matter.
While smaller superyachts can range in price from a few million dollars up to tens of millions, larger vessels can cost hundreds of millions of dollars and even more.
In fact, the most expensive superyacht ever built, the History Supreme, sold for an astonishing $4.5 billion!
The cost of a larger superyacht is determined by the size of the vessel, the number of amenities and features it offers, and the quality of the materials used in its construction.
The more luxurious the vessel, the higher the price tag.
For example, a well-appointed, 320-foot superyacht with all the bells and whistles can easily cost in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
In addition to the cost of the vessel itself, there are also ongoing operational costs associated with owning a superyacht.
These can add up quickly and include fuel, maintenance, crew salaries, insurance, dockage, and more.
However, these costs can vary greatly depending on the size and type of vessel, as well as the number of amenities and features it offers.
When it comes to superyachts, the sky truly is the limit.
Whether youre looking for a smaller vessel or a multi-million dollar mega-yacht, the cost will ultimately be determined by your individual preferences and budget.
Factors That Affect Superyacht Prices
![superyachts rates](https://boatpursuits.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/how-much-does-a-superyacht-cost-1694572611.1978555-300x152.jpg)
When it comes to the cost of a superyacht, there are several factors that can affect the final price.
The size of the vessel is one of the primary considerations, as larger yachts typically cost more than smaller ones.
The amenities and features of the yacht can also influence the final cost.
For instance, a yacht with extensive customizations (such as a Jacuzzi or helipad) or high-end materials (such as carbon fiber or mahogany) may cost more than a standard yacht.
Additionally, the cost of maintenance and upkeep should be taken into account, as these can quickly add up over time.
Finally, the buyer’s individual preferences and budget will play a significant role in determining the total cost of the superyacht.
The Most Expensive Superyacht Ever Built
The most expensive superyacht ever built is the History Supreme, a 100-foot-long vessel that sold for a staggering $4.5 billion.
The luxurious yacht was commissioned by Robert Kuok, a Malaysian tycoon, and it took three years to build.
The exterior of the superyacht is made from solid gold and platinum, while the interior is adorned with a wide range of luxury features, including a statue made from genuine Tyrannosaurus Rex bones.
The luxurious amenities also include a master suite with a Jacuzzi, a wine cellar, and a helipad.
The History Supreme is a truly remarkable vessel and it is the epitome of opulence and excess.
It is an excellent example of how much a superyacht can cost when a buyer has a virtually unlimited budget.

To boost ocean research, some scientists are turning to superyachts

For almost two years, Robert Brewin collected data from the bow of a superyacht as it sailed pristine waters from the Caribbean Sea to the Antarctic Ocean.
The Archimedes, a 222-foot "adventure" yacht then owned by the late hedge funder James Simons, boasts a gym, a jacuzzi and an elevator. But between 2018 and 2020, Brewin was concerned only with the boat's Sea-Bird Scientific Solar Tracking Aiming System, installed to measure light reflecting off of the water. A senior lecturer at the UK's University of Exeter, Brewin and his colleagues were analyzing microplankton—microscopic organisms at the base of the marine food chain—by studying the ocean's color. The Sea-Bird's readouts helped them verify satellite imagery.
Brewin's was not your typical superyacht itinerary, but he is one of hundreds of scientists to have used an adventure yacht—also known as expedition or explorer yachts—to conduct research on the ocean. In a paper published in Frontiers in Remote Sensing , Brewin and his co-authors touted the potential of "harnessing superyachts" for science, concluding that "reaching out to wealthy citizen scientists may help fill [research capability] gaps."
It's a view shared—and being pushed—by the Yacht Club of Monaco and the Explorers Club, a New York City-based organization focused on exploration and science (of which, full disclosure, I am a member). In March, the groups co-hosted an environmental symposium that included an awards ceremony for yacht owners who "stand out for their commitment to protecting the marine environment ." The Archimedes won a "Science & Discovery" award.
"If a yacht is operating 365 days a year, rather than having it sit idle it'd be much better for it to contribute a positive return through science and conservation," says Rob McCallum, an Explorers Club fellow and founder of US-based EYOS Expeditions, which runs adventure yacht voyages.
EYOS charters yachts from private owners for its excursions, and is a founding member of Yachts for Science, a four-year-old organization that matches privately owned yachts with scientists who need time at sea. (Other members include yacht builder Arksen, media firm BOAT International, and nonprofits Nekton Foundation and Ocean Family Foundation.) Yachts for Science will enable about $1 million worth of donated yacht time this year, McCallum says, a figure he expects to hit $15 million by 2029.
"There's a personal satisfaction that we are contributing to something that is bigger than us," says Tom Peterson, who co-owns an insurance underwriting company in California and has what he jokingly refers to as a "mini superyacht."
Every year for the past decade, Peterson has donated about 15 to 20 days of time and fuel on the 24-meter Valkyrie to scientists, who he takes out himself as a licensed captain and former scuba dive operator. He often works with the Shark Lab at California State University Long Beach, and allows researchers to stay aboard for days at a time instead of having to constantly make the 1.5-hour trip to and from shore.
To link up with scientists, Peterson works with the International SeaKeepers Society, a Florida-based nonprofit that engages the yachting community to support ocean conservation and research. "The more we understand things about the ocean in general, the better we all are in the long run," he says.
When "superyacht" and "the environment" appear in the same sentence, it's usually in a different context. In 2019, one study estimated that a single 71-meter superyacht has the same annual carbon footprint as about 200 cars. In 2021, another paper found that superyachts were the single greatest contributor to the carbon footprint of 20 of the world's most prominent billionaires, accounting for 64% of their combined emissions.
"If you really want to respect the environment, you can just go surf," says Grégory Salle, a senior researcher at the French National Center for Scientific Research and author of the book Superyachts: Luxury, Tranquility and Ecocide. Salle is open to the idea that superyachts could be used to advance scientific research, but says it's contradictory for anyone to buy a superyacht and claim to be truly concerned about the environment.
McCallum says people who own adventure yachts tend to be younger than your standard superyacht owner, and have a particular interest in remote and pristine places. "They're not the sort of people that are content to just hang out in the Mediterranean or the Caribbean," he says. "Antarctica, the Arctic, the remote Indian Ocean, the remote Pacific Ocean, the Subantarctic islands… that's where you're going to find us delivering our services."
Explorer yachts aren't the only way scientists can reach those destinations, but demand for dedicated research vessels does outstrip available supply. The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), arguably the world's greatest collector of oceanographic data, has a fleet of 15 research and survey vessels for the use of its scientists.
Academic researchers can also apply to use the fleet, often at a subsidized rate. But scientists request roughly 15,000 to 20,000 days of boat time every year. In 2019, NOAA was able to fill just 2,300 of them, according to an internal study.
That gap is particularly problematic as the planet warms. Oceans provide services that scientists call "existentially important," producing more than half of the oxygen we breathe and serving as the world's largest carbon sink. They also absorb 30% of our carbon emissions and 90% of the excess heat generated by them.
G. Mark Miller, a retired NOAA Corps officer who was in charge of several of the agency's research vessels, has a different solution in mind when it comes to bolstering ocean research: smaller boats, fit for purpose. Superyachts can cost north of $500 million, he says, "why don't we build a hundred $5 million vessels and flood the ocean science community?"
After leaving NOAA, Miller in 2021 launched Virginia-based Greenwater Marine Sciences Offshore with a vision of building a global fleet of research vessels and offering their use at affordable prices. He says hiring a NOAA boat can cost scientists between $20,000 and $100,000 per day. GMSO plans to charge less than $10,000 a day for most missions. The company says it's close to acquiring its first three vessels.
Miller hopes his business model will help scientists conduct the work they need to—particularly in under-served regions like the Asia-Pacific—without worrying about getting a luxury yacht covered in "muddy worms, plankton goo, dead fish [and] whale snot." He describes yacht owners donating boat time to scientists as "better than nothing," and says it can help get regular people interested in science and exploration.
Christopher Walsh, captain of the Archimedes, says he and his crew love taking part in science initiatives, especially when there's an educational component. "I get a real thrill when we can stream to the classrooms—you can't imagine the enthusiasm the kids display," Walsh says. "That gives me a lot of hope for the future."

Covering 500 hectares of a natural lagoon in the South Malé Atoll, Zamani Islands comprises eight islands, three individual resorts, a collection of lavish private residences, and amenities galore. It will also be home to the first superyacht marina in the Maldives and the first medical spa in the country, Atoll Estates claims. To top it off, the company says that Zamani Islands will be the first resort in the region to run on 100 percent renewable energy.
“It was our intention from the outset to conceive a resort with sustainability truly at its heart that will do good for both people and place,” Majumder and Bourtov said in a statement . “Within this framework, Zamani Islands will also set new standards for a lifestyle destination both within the Maldives and globally.”
Designed in partnership with Dubai-based architectural firm Killa Design, the three resorts each offer different experiences for guests. Vibrant is about “experiential luxury,” Elegant is focused on “uber luxury,” and Dvnes exudes “youthful vibes.” Accommodation ranges from beautifully appointed apartments to splashy overwater villas.
Conveniently located 21 miles from the main international airport, Zamani Islands will also include private estates and mansions. (Atoll Estates says 14 residences are currently available for purchase off-plan.) Penned in partnership with Ukrainian studio YoDezeen, the beachfront abodes each feature four to eight bedrooms, sleek, contemporary decor, and the finest natural materials. You can also expect multiple private pools across different levels, a cinema, a spa, a wellness area, and a gym. In addition, each residence comes with a personal butler service and a berth at the marina. Owners will also have a full run of the resort’s amenities, including a yacht club, three spas, a convention center, and 26 restaurants and bars. The highlight of the culinary offering will be the largest underwater restaurant in the Maldives.
Zamani Islands will have a strong focus on sustainability, too. The resort is designed to run on 100 percent renewable energy and could eventually produce up to 50 percent of its own food. Furthermore, Atoll Estates has carefully selected eco-friendly construction materials and has implemented a coral relocation and propagation program. That means you can feel extra good during your stay.
The first part of Zamani Islands will open in spring 2026.

A Fed interest rate cut won’t send mortgage rates plummeting, a top housing analyst says
![superyachts rates Fed Chair Jerome Powell.](https://fortune.com/img-assets/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/GettyImages-2160735795-1-e1721412152209.jpg?w=1440&q=75)
Everyone is waiting for mortgage rates to fall; some might have even marked their calendars for the anxiously awaited , possible interest rate cut in September. For borrowers, it would be much-needed relief after the Federal Reserve’s two-year battle with scorching inflation. But an interest rate cut might not translate into immediately lower mortgage rates, according to one industry watcher.
“The bond market is already pricing in rate cuts, so the simple act of the Fed cutting is not necessarily going to have a direct impact on mortgage rates,” Alan Ratner, managing director for housing research firm Zelman & Associates, said in an interview with CNBC yesterday. “Right now, the bond market is already pricing in that outlook, so we’ll see how far rates actually move lower, but our view is it’s going to be a fairly gradual decline over the next several years, as opposed to a step function lower.”
The firm’s chief executive is none other than Ivy Zelman, dubbed “Poison Ivy” for calling the 2008 housing bust, and like her colleagues, she’s shared a less optimistic view of the housing world, particularly when it comes to sales . Last fall she noted that “existing home sales are… probably at the lowest since the [great financial crisis,]” and predicted that they would remain at “extremely depressed levels” through 2025. They are still sluggish, dipping 0.7% in May from the prior month and 2.8% from a year ago; we’ll see if June was any different when the data is released next week.
But inventory is better, a sign that the lock-in effect, which kept sellers on the sidelines, could be easing. Redfin recently reported that the total number of listings is near its highest point in close to four years, at 977,230.
And of course, mortgage rates have dropped. The average 30-year fixed daily mortgage rate is 6.81% and the weekly one is 6.77%. The decline was mostly off the back of a cool inflation report, but there is more to it, and it might not mean they’ll continue to fall. “What the market is showing right now, though, is a lot of optimism that the tamer inflation metrics are going to translate to much lower mortgage rates in the back half of the year and kind of solve that affordability problem,” Ratner said. “And that might be a little bit of an optimistic view.”
If that is the case, it’s not great for anyone who wants to buy a home; they’re dealing with substantially higher home prices and mortgage rates than before the pandemic and incomes that haven’t necessarily kept up. So demand has cooled off, despite people needing homes.
“We are concerned about the direction of the economy and the consumer,” Ratner said, “and right now, if we can orchestrate a soft landing and lower rate environment, that is the goldilocks scenario for housing, but it’s definitely threading a needle.” Lower mortgage rates wouldn’t matter much if the economy were to slow or fall into a recession, he noted.
Still, we’re not too far off from what Compass’ chief executive, Robert Reffkin, called the magic mortgage rate : anything below 6%, he suggested, would bring buyers back to the market. Lawrence Yun, the National Association of Realtors’ chief economist, also recently said 6% would be the “new normal.” Even with interest rate cuts from the Fed, Yun doesn’t anticipate mortgage rates will fall to 5%, let alone anywhere near the historical lows throughout the pandemic.
In a rare bit of good news, because mortgage rates are the lowest they’ve been in months, mortgage payments fell from an all-time high earlier this month, and some buyers captured thousands of dollars in purchasing power . We’ll see if the trend continues.
