We teach sailing classes at every level, from basic sailing to offshore passagemaking. Whether you dream of daysailing on the lake with family and friends, becoming a charter captain, or crossing the ocean in your own boat — we’ll give you the training and experience you need to realize your vision.

View our course catalog to find out what we have to offer.

We actually went somewhere (Key Largo), rather than returning to the dock each evening. The course was made to be an adventure, as well as simply instructional. The weather was “made to order” — sun and gentle breeze Saturday through Wednesday, then Force 8 for our ‘foul weather instruction’ on Thursday.

I thought it was an excellent, challenging course. It definitely wasn’t a “cruise.” The instructor expected a lot from the students. I like that.

I have nothing but the utmost praise for your entire operation and the quality of the instruction that I received. Al Hatch is a consummate instructor and brings to this activity a love and a passion that is genuine and expansive. I hope to be able to return to Blue Water to experience some of the higher-level courses of instruction, and I certainly would have no trouble at all recommending your company to anyone.

Best Summer Weekend

Sailing is a very social sport and attracts great people. You will have fun, meet other sailors and discover new friends.

Our student instructor ratio is 4 to 1. And we normally teach between 5 and 10 boats every weekend. So you will be part of a group of 20 to 40 students who are all learning to sail. At the end of each day, we encourage you to hang out and have a cold drink. This is when you can really savor the sailing vibe, meet more people and develop a great love for this sport.

After graduating from Basic Sailing, you will be ready for your next steps. One of the best options is to join Manhattan Yacht Club. This will connect you with the harbor’s largest group of sailors and you will have something to do every weekend for the rest of the summer. MYC has great cruising and racing programs, plus a floating clubhouse in the harbor.

You can also sign up for advanced courses such as Basic Coastal Cruising. Then in winter, you can join your fellow graduates at “Manhattan Caribbean Week” which is one week of fun, sun and sailing in the British Virgin Islands.

It all starts with you here and now. Just sign up before the course you want sells out.

Our Locations

In summer, we teach in New York Harbor. You will be sailing in front of the Statue of Liberty and skyline of Manhattan. Bring your camera for some super-cool selfies.

We have 2 summer meet-up locations where students connect with their instructors.

  • Jersey City MEET UP – This is our headquarters and home of the Manhattan Yacht Club, the largest sailing organization in New York Harbor. Our fleet is based at Liberty Harbor Marina. We have beautiful decks overlooking the water, plus picnic tables, grass, flagpoles, games, tents, BBQs & a sailing atmosphere where you can relax with new friends before and after sailing.
  • Manhattan MEET UP – Our second meet-up location is in Lower Manhattan at the Occulus. This is where you meet one of our instructors who will escort you across the river on the PATH where you will discover huge marinas filled with sailboats. This is NY Harbor’s sailing capital! It’s an easy and short 8 minute walk from the PATH station to the Manhattan Yacht Club.

In winter, we teach in the Caribbean with most classes in the British Virgin Islands. This is where you can enroll in higher level courses such as Basic Coastal Cruising, Bareboat Chartering and Catamaran Chartering.

Learn to Sail Caribbean

Horizon Sailing School

What better way to learn to sail, or hone your existing sailing skills, than on a sailing vacation in the Caribbean?  We have ASA sailing schools in the BVI and St Vincent; some of the most idyllic cruising grounds in the world, offering first-class tuition, consistent breeze and 365 days of sunshine.

“I loved every minute of my certification.  My ASA Instructor gave me such confidence”

Our schools are  American Sailing Association  certified facilities offering you first-class tuition with our great Instructors. All of our ASA courses are taught on our private boats as opposed to renting a cabin with other people; it’s just you and your friends or family onboard.  Our courses are personally tailored around your own vacation schedule; you let us know when you would like to take your Learn to Sail adventure. You will experience a true ‘liveaboard’ experience; all of your study and practical work takes place on your private yacht as you sail the beautiful Caribbean.

After your safety briefing and initial theory work, you will depart from your  Horizon Yacht Charters Base , having provisioned and organized your snorkel equipment, and sail to the next stunning anchorage; all the time working through your ASA certification with your ASA Instructor.

Over the course of a week you will gain the knowledge and experience to charter sailing boats anywhere in the world, and embark on your own sailing adventure.  The emphasis at Horizon Yacht Charters Caribbean sailing schools is on gaining hands-on experience at your own pace.  Typically, the day will be split between theory work and practicing new skills through sailing exercises.

“My wife and I undertook the certification together which makes us more confident sailing together now”

Once anchored for the afternoon; put the books away and enjoy a swim, a snorkel or spend time exploring ashore.  After all, it’s your Caribbean vacation!

HOW DOES IT WORK

The American Sailing Association (ASA) program has structured levels of sailing standards, which are examined at progressive certification levels at our Caribbean sailing schools. Students who learn to sail with Horizon Yacht Charters receive an ASA Logbook that lists the standards, certification and records sailing experience. All courses and examinations are run by our ASA qualified instructors. When a certification level is successfully completed, your ASA Logbook is signed and stamped so that any charter or rental fleet operator can see your level of competency. The most popular American Sailing Association courses we offer are as follows:

If you have little or no experience, then we recommend that you begin with ASA 101 and ASA 103.  If you are on a week’s charter, these two courses can be taught in 5 days, giving you a couple of days to practice your new-found skills at the end of the week or to simply relax in the Caribbean sunshine.

Those that have cruising experience and basic seamanship skills should also add ASA 104 to their instruction. The three courses can be taught in one week, but don’t forget you are on vacation too so you may want to extend a few days to relax.  We also offer the catamaran ASA 114 certification.

“This has given me a taste of what it could be like to buy our own boat in the future and go cruising – that’s the dream, isn’t it?”

Email our Horizon Caribbean bases to check availability and full pricing.

“We’ve sailed with Brian as a skipper only and as an ASA instructor. He is as patient with a large family as he is in a one on one teaching role. Brian has an intuitive mastery of sail trim that he passes on to his students with ease. It’s clear he has not only been sailing his entire life but that he is a natural teacher as well. His knowledge of Grenada, St Vincent and all in between is matched only by his rapport with the locals. If you walk around any of the Windward Islands with Brian, you immediately feel like a local as everywhere he goes he is warmly greeted.  Without a doubt, Brian has made each of our charters that much more enjoyable and we’ve walked away with more sailing knowledge gained in 7 days than we might have learned in years of trial and error.” – John Baldschun

This is what one of our clients had to say recently: “The three of us loved Donna. She is obviously very skilled and experienced, but joins this with a delightful, engaging manner. She evaluated, but also shared much of her substantial knowledge of sailing in your local waters. We liked her so well we were sorry to part.” Andy L, Dec 2016.

Another client has said: “ I just wanted to say a huge thank you!  We had a phenomenal trip!  BVIs are an amazing place. Would like to especially praise Donna. She did a great job of balancing teaching my ASA 104/114 and vacation time for others on the boat.  Her energy and enthusiasm for sailing are obvious. Everybody on the boat consider this one best all time trips. Already planning the next charter”. Joe Parkey – 1/2 – 1/92020.

“Incredible week sightseeing, snorkeling, great stops for overnight. Cara’s knowledge of sailing is tremendous, answered all our questions, always made us feel safe, and was a great teacher.”

“Cara was awesome, gave us her personal cell phone number, and responded to questions happily. A pleasure to have a board”

Chris’ training will focus on safety, doing things the right way and thorough understanding of the water. While I am still a novice skipper I feel as if I know more than a lot of the skippers that I watched during the week. If you follow his instruction you too will be a better skipper. No shortcuts and you will ensure a safe happy trip for you and your family.

If you want an instructor or just a skipper ask for Chris. You will not be disappointed.

We will be back and I will recommend this charter company to my friends and family”. Patrick Anglim – January 13th 2020.

“Greg is an excellent sailor/skipper! His knowledge and explanations were fantastic” ~ Kaczmarek

“Greg and Laura are off the charts! If you are lucky enough to sail with them, you will have the sail of your dreams” ~ Hilary Cohen

“Outstanding experience! Great local knowledge. Captain is highly experienced to handle any situation. Captain flexible with plans and showed me all the local highlights” , Yacht: Bavaria 40 Transitions, Dates: 9th to 19th December 2021. ~ Client: Diane DeGroot

“My husband and I chartered a catamaran for 9 days and arranged to have a certified ASA instructor to take ASA 101,103,104,& 114. I have to say we feel really lucky to have Brian as our instructor. He is the only local certified ASA instructor in the Grenadines…I was incredibly impressed with his knowledge and his teaching styles. We were able to complete all 4 courses and had a lot of fun in the process. I would highly recommend him as a hired Captain or Instructor. He was definitely was a huge part of what we loved about our trip!  We will be hiring Brian again for our next trip to the Grenadines.” ~ Natasha & Andi Marcher 2019

“Heiden was great – made trip super easy and fun” ~ Morris

“Heiden was fantastic, very friendly with the kids and extremely professional.” ~ Sirgue

If you're planning to charter a yacht then chances are it'll be a Catamaran, so we think it's important to get you out sailing on one, to show you the subtle differences between Cats and Mono's, but at the same time, there's nothing like being rail-down in a fresh breeze on a Keelboat. Our school in unique in that you will learn in both destinations on both a monohull and catamaran.

Island spirit Trusted track record

The Perfect Classroom

From our location in the Gulf of Thailand, 2 hours drive from Bangkok’s main airport, just south of Pattaya at Ocean Marina Yacht Club in Jomthien, we gain access to the lower part of the Bangkok Bite.

This cruising ground offers everything a Sailing School in Thailand could possibly hope for; an international standard marina, Thailand's largest international shipping port with Traffic Separation Lanes for ships, Thailand's largest Naval base and a generous scattering of tropical islands.

Such diversity allows our sailing school students to get first-hand experience of some the more serious aspects of yacht navigation and combine it with a little bit of typical Thai tropical island beauty and hospitality.

From our location in Phuket we gain access to Yacht Haven Marina, Asia's largest Super-yacht marina, is our gateway to the Andaman Sea and the stunning islands of Phang Nga Bay.

The waters surrounding Phuket make for a perfect training ground, what it lacks in shipping traffic it makes up for with Super-yacht & tourism traffic. Learning to sail in Phuket remains challenging enough to deliver the learning experience required but it's hard not think you're on holidays, just because of the overwhelming beauty of the place.

Sailing School Thailand

Instructors with passion

A sailing school can have it all; perfect yachts, nice cruising grounds and a super-cool website, but when it comes down to it its all about the Instructors…. and we know that.

The Sailing school is just part of what Island Spirit Sailing does, we also operate a large Charter Fleet and represent major brand yachts through our yacht brokerage along with a yacht delivery service throughout Asia, so there is always plenty to do and it is because of this that Island Spirit Sailing is able to attract and retain the most experienced of Instructors.

Our instructors are not just doing the same training courses week in week out, when they’re not teaching they’re on charter or delivering yachts which leaves their love and passion for being out on the ocean in tact and keen to pass on their knowledge and experience and of course the odd salty-sea-dog story or two.

Keel boats and Catamarans

Although the exhilaration that comes with rail-down sailing on a powered up keelboat will never be replaced, we are today, without doubt, in the age of the Catamaran.

Island Spirit Sailing offers its sailing school students the opportunity to experience both Keelboat sailing and Catamaran sailing throughout the course of the Zero to Hero program.

We are the only school that we are aware of that incorporates both production keelboats and catamarans into the standard sailing curriculum.

Longevity and experience

Island Spirit Sailing opened its sailing school in 2004 and have been running a sailing school every month since; with an alumni of over 3500 people we’re proud of our contribution to the sailing community.

With such a large Alumni of active sailors Island Spirit Sailing is able to offer many opportunities to students to get out on the water once they finish their training; from ocean crossings to fun weekend flotilla’s.

Its fun and you’ll meet like-minded people

This is probably the best, yet least expected part of it all; for most of our sailing school students it’s been a long time since they’ve attended a school and they’re surprised at just how rewarding and how much fun learning something new is, of course being in the tropics and on a yacht helps.

The other surprising thing is how well a group of complete strangers gel and get on, clearly there is common ground in that all the students attending started out with the desire and drive to learn how to sail and they chose to do it in Thailand and thankfully they choose Island Spirit Sailing, so there’s a lot in common from the onset and many people find that they make lasting relationships and with our Alumni program to get people out sailing, we aim to foster that.

Welcome to East Anglian Sea School

East Anglian Sea School, a bastion of maritime education for over five decades, proudly stands as the epitome of teaching excellence along the Eastern Coast. Established in 1973 as the East Anglian School of Sailing, a modest family enterprise, our evolution into a premier Royal Yachting Association (RYA) sea school situated at Suffolk Yacht Harbour attests to our unwavering commitment to excellence.

Our renowned reputation is not only grounded in the unmatched quality of training experiences, state-of-the-art facilities, seaworthy yachts, and delectable homecooked catering on those vessels, but also in our pioneering contributions to nautical education. As the first Yachtmaster training centre in the world, the East Anglian Sea School holds the distinction of being the longest-running institution of its kind.

Guided by the third generation of the founding family, the school's enduring legacy mirrors the longevity of the Royal Yachting Association training program. Over the past fifty years, our commitment has expanded to encompass a diverse range of maritime pursuits, including getting on the water, comprehensive sailing lessons, RYA theory and practical courses, motorboat and powerboat instruction, offshore racing, and sailing adventures. Moreover, our expertise extends to yacht proficiency, navigation skills, and specialized navigation courses tailored for coastal and marine environments.

This rich and pioneering history ensures that students at the East Anglian Sea School receive an education steeped in tradition and combined with new innovations, making us a beacon of nautical proficiency and a distinguished institution in the global maritime community.
