Welcome to Boat Salvage.

Welcome to Boat Salvage. We work closely with Boatbreakers and Boat Scrapyard to Salvage as many boats and boat parts as we can. Boat Salvage deal with unwanted boats, storm damaged boats, project boats, insurance write-offs and much more.

Boat Salvage work with Boatbreakers to find boats from all over the UK and Europe to salvage and recycle . From our yard in Portsmouth UK we try and list as much recycled chandlery and boat items as possible. When the boats come to us for salvage they are stripped down by our expert teams and advertised on our network of sites and social media.

Some boats will be beyond the point of being able to be salvaged but they will be scrapped at our boat scrapyard here in Portsmouth. Our yard is perfectly positioned and can have boats delivered to us by road or water. We have salvaged boats for insurance companies, councils, MOD and private clients.

We have dive teams on standby who can be sent out to recover sunken boats as soon as a problem arises. Our team can then get the boat back to our yard in Portsmouth and dealt with.

If you have a boat that you think can be salvaged or if you’re not sure what to do with an unwanted boat then please give us a call on 023 9298 4666 and we would be happy to help.

Boat Scrapyard is the one stop marine chandlery shop where we list all of the boat parts we recycle from end of life boats. We also have brand new items which are surplus chandlery stock. The aim is to have the biggest selection of new and used boat parts for sale around.

Our sister company  Boatbreakers, source end of life boats through their marine recycling network. Many of the boat parts we sell will be extremely hard to get hold of due to the boats they come from no longer being in production.

The Boat Scrapyard team will always try and price each item for a fair price. Unless an item is brand new it will very rarely be anywhere near the full retail price. So there should be plenty of boaty bargains!

We want to hear from you. As we expand our Marine Recycling network we want you to  tell us the parts you are looking for . Another service we want to offer is pre-ordering parts from boats that we will be having delivered soon.

Of particular note is the work that Briggs Marine carried out on the Royal Oak, a sunken WWII Battleship and war grave. We were awarded the contract for conducting oil removal operations under MoD Salvage & Marine Operations direction. HMS Royal Oak was a Sovereign class battle ship built originally as a coal burner for WW1. The vessel was later converted to fuel oil, consequently, oil tanks are sporadic and in unconventional positions within the hull.

Salvage and Recovery Services

Any vessel can suffer an unfortunate accident, whether that’s down to strong tides, adverse weather, machine failure and countless other scenarios. RS Divers have extensive experience in salvaging all types of vessels and cargo on behalf of private owners, insurance companies, the marine industry and commercial enterprises. We take on both planned wreckage projects and emergency recovery all over the UK.

You can rely on our skills and experience to recover your vessel or belongings. We offer a fast call-out service to respond to your emergency at speed, giving you the best chance to get your vessel out of the water with minimal impact.

We know that an unexpected salvage or recovery job can leave you feeling concerned about cost. That’s why we offer a fair and consistent pricing structure so that you know how much your salvage and recovery needs will cost before we even start work.

We work very closely with most marine insurance companies. If a boat owner requires the use of our marine salvage and recovery services to salvage their boat or yacht, we can salvage through their marine insurance.

What are Salvage & Recovery Services?

Marine recovery and salvage is the process of recovering a vessel, its cargo, or any other property that has been damaged or lost at sea. It involves locating and removing the debris from the water and assessing the condition of the vessel or property before it can be brought back to land.

Salvage operations require specialist equipment, a great deal of expertise, and a deep understanding of maritime laws and regulations. The goal of marine salvage is to save lives, protect the environment, and minimise commercial losses caused by marine accidents.

Our Services

Our comprehensive salvage and recovery services provide a solution to a wide range of needs.

  • Search and recovery services – using side scanners, multi-beam sonars and grappling hooks to locate missing vessels.
  • Cranes and underwater rigging – we use lift bags and other buoyancy control devices to bring wrecks to the surface, as well as crane-based salvages.
  • Underwater cutting equipment – to turn wrecks, vessels or items requiring salvage into smaller pieces which can be taken to the surface.
  • Debris and seabed clearance – removal of shallow wrecks and other material in preparation for groundworks or to clear navigational paths.
  • Boat salvage diving services – our team is equipped to recover and salvage vessels, equipment, or valuables that have submerged due to accidents, wreckage, or other circumstances.

We are on call 24/7 and ready to respond to any emergencies, as well as providing planned recoveries or support for large projects.

Our Salvage & Recovery Work

Our recent work includes:

  • A 1923 wooden sailing yacht foundered on the shifting sandbanks off the Friesian Islands, allowing the swell to break over her and fill her with water…

A 1923 wooden sailing yacht foundered on the shifting sandbanks off the Friesian Islands, allowing the swell to break over her and fill her with water. The family were safely recovered, but the boat started to break up and drifted away from the sandbank and towards the traffic lanes.

RS Divers were contacted by the vessel’s insurers and asked to recover her. The team headed immediately to the wreck site to perform a recce, attaching anchors to the wreckage to slow/stop any further drifting and marking the site with buoys for easy location.

A long-arm grab and lighter were subcontracted to recover her, and the team coordinated the salvage, successfully recovering what was left of her for disposal. Working with the insurance company, the sub-contractor and the German environmental agency, the salvage was successfully completed.

  • A small fishing vessel was holed up on the Forth and sank on her berth. RS Divers were commissioned to return her to the surface…

A small fishing vessel was holed up on the Forth and sank on her berth. RS Divers were commissioned to return her to the surface and move her to a location where she could be lifted out of the water.

Four lift bags were attached to her hull and then inflated to raise her gunwhales to the surface, where pumps were then used to pump out several tons of water. While floating on the airbags, the vessel was towed to an area adjacent to a concrete hard, slings were attached under her hull, and she was safely lifted out of the water.

  • A high-performance racing yacht was dismasted in the English Channel some 2 nm south of the Isle of Wight…

A high-performance racing yacht was dismasted in the English Channel some 2 nm south of the Isle of Wight. With the rigging, sails and carbon fibre mast being worth many hundred thousand pounds, an operation was launched to locate the mast in this heavily tidal location and recover as much of it intact if possible.

Side-scan and multibeam sonar were used to locate the mast, 3 nm from where it had been jettisoned, allowing divers to go down in the brief lull in the tidal stream and attach lines to the mast. A multicat was then used to raise the mast and rigging, and it was safely recovered to the surface and transported back to port, clearing the seabed of the debris and allowing as much of what was recovered to be recycled and reused.

Contact RS Divers for Salvage & Recovery Services

Here at RS Divers, we have over 30 years of experience, and our team loves what they do. We are based in Portsmouth but offer our high-quality, inshore commercial salvage services across the UK and Europe.

As an inshore company, we work in the littoral out to the 12nm limit and in any inland waterways where you may require support, including rivers, reservoirs, lakes and more.

Not only are we an experienced and professional team, but we also have excellent working relationships with many UK marinas, harbour authorities, surveyors, and insurance companies. This means that we can do the job efficiently with no wasted time, resulting in a fairly priced, cost-effective service.

Call or email to get in touch .

How do salvage operations work?

When you contact RS Divers for support with marine salvage and recovery, we will begin by assessing the site to ensure that it is safe for recovery and identify what equipment is needed. Once this stage has been completed, depending on the situation, our commercial dive team will work swiftly to recover your vessel and any cargo while taking all steps to protect the environment and minimise any risk of pollution.

Whatever we are recovering, we will typically utilise salvage barges and cranes as this is the most effective marine salvage equipment for the job, often allied with the use of lift bags that we fill with air once attached to the hull underwater to help raise it to the surface. Once the gunwales are at surface level, we can start to pump out the hull, having plugged any holes, and then we can either recover onto the deck or tow the hull back to port.

Does insurance cover boat salvage?

This is dependent on your policy, so it’s important to check for details on salvage or wreckage. RS Divers works closely with most marine insurance companies and can undertake work covered by your policy as appropriate.

Can you recover an abandoned wreckage I found?

We can support you in recovering an abandoned wreckage, but you need to follow the appropriate laws and guidance on reporting the wreckage, finding the owner, and then reporting what was found as part of the recovery. This process can be time-consuming, and you must be aware of the process before you commission us to complete the work for you.

How much does it cost to recover a sunken boat?

The cost of recovering a sunken boat depends on three main factors; the salvage operations required to raise the vessel, the size of the boat being salvaged, and where it has sunk/depth of water. These factors will determine the salvage strategy and therefore impact cost.

An experienced marine salvage business such as RS Divers will give you a precise quote before the work is carried out.

Can anyone salvage a sunken boat?

Salvaging a sunken boat involves recovering another person’s boat or cargo. The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) states salvaging a boat is a statutory duty for all seafarers.

When salvaging a sunken boat, you must be aware of associated laws. In the UK, if you salvage and recover wreck material from within UK waters, you must report the wreck to the UK Government appointed ‘Receiver of Wreck’.

The Receiver is responsible for sourcing the owner and liaising between the owner and the finder. The Receiver remit applies to tidal water in the UK and therefore excludes inland, non-tidal lakes or rivers in the UK. Under UK Salvage Law, a person who recovers another person’s boat or cargo from danger at sea is entitled to a reward based on the value of the property saved.

What is the law on goods cast overboard?

Under Section 255 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995, a wreck is defined as “jetsam, flotsam, lagan and derelict found in or on the shores of the sea or any tidal water”.

Jetsam refers to goods cast overboard to lighten a vessel in danger of sinking. The vessel may still perish.

Flotsam refers to goods lost from a ship which has sunk or otherwise perished. Goods are recoverable because they remain afloat.

Lagan refers to goods cast overboard from a ship which afterwards perishes. The goods are buoyed so they can be recovered.

Derelict refers to property, whether vessel or cargo, which has been abandoned and deserted at sea by those who were in charge of it without any hope of recovering it.

If a boat comes off its moorings, it isn’t typically classified as a wreck for the purposes of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995, as it hasn’t been abandoned without hope of recovery. Similarly, buoys, such as data buoys, are not classed as a wreck, but buoys forming part of fishing equipment may be classed as a wreck when adrift.

Can you keep a boat if you find it?

If you find an abandoned boat, a derelict ship, a sunken wreck or wreck material, it is recommended you report your find to the Local Harbour Master. They can advise you on the next steps, which may be to report it to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. The Report of Wreck and Salvage Form (MSF 6200) can be found on the government website.

You are required to submit the form to the Marine and Coastguard Agency within 28 days of finding the wreck. Upon receipt, the Marine and Coastguard Agency will appoint the Receiver of Wreck, who will be responsible for sourcing the owner of the ship and liaising between you and the owner.

Buying Used Boat Parts in the UK

Find bargain deals on used boat parts, at our boat salvage yard.

If like most boat owners, you probably have a running list of parts to buy for the boat. But if your eyes water at what it will cost you at the chandlery, you might be interested to know that you can buy used boat parts for less than 50% of the retail price! The trick is knowing where to look..

Maybe you enjoy bargain hunting? Then you’ll love picking over parts at our boat salvage yard. A marine salvage yard is a place where scrap boats go to be taken apart and recycled.

How it works

Boatbreakers collect boats that are damaged beyond repair (or no longer wanted) from owners and insurance companies. The yard then dismantles and sells the boat’s salvageable parts to customers.

The ideal scenario in the UK would be for a “pick and pull” yard”. This would mean you’re set loose in the yard with a screwdriver, free to climb all over the boats and pull off the pieces that strike your fancy. Sadly with limited space on the yard’s scrap quay we can’t hold onto boats for too long. Time and space is money in a busy working scrapyard. This is why we put great emphasis on advertising the boats online before they come in. It means people can pre-order the parts from each boat.

The deals can be fantastic. Everything we sell we will always consider offers on. That prices you pay with us could have easily been 10-20x at a chandlery.

Very often our marine breakers yard staff can help you find particular parts. If you’re looking for something quite specific, call ahead to inquire about availability through our social media channels.

What you’ll find in a Boat Breaker’s Yard

If it’s attached to boat, there’s a good chance you’ll find it at a salvage yard! Engines , water pumps , winches , blocks , doors , hatches , booms , masts , etc. Sometimes you’ll find items like line, sails , and electronics but many owners will strip out items that can be resold before delivering the boat to the salvage yard.

Points to Note about buying Secondhand Boat Bits

  • Boat salvage yards are the cheapest place to find parts and there’s no postage costs (if you collect in person).
  • You can check before buying it
  • Boat Scrapyard staff will know the history of the boat and how this will affect the quality of the parts. For example, boat parts from fresh water boats tend to be in better shape than parts from salt water boats. The way in which the boat was damaged may also affect your decision to buy a part. For example, you might not want to buy rigging hardware from a boat that lost its mast, however buying a boom from a boat with fire damage might be fine.
  • You often have to remove the boat parts from deck material. To save time in the scrapping process our team will chop around items like winches and clutches. We then remove them from the FRP or Wood back at the workshop. However we are happy to sell you these items without removing.
  • There is no set stock. It is really pot luck in terms of what boats we’ve had in.
  • As with all used parts, they can be less durable or faulty and there is no warranty.

Browse our selection of Second Hand Boat Parts on Boatscrapyard.com and find a bargain.

Looking for a sealed entry door Roughly 800 wide by 1200 high

After 2 front boat seats for a Fletcher 170 gto

Dear Sir’s,

I’ve got a 30 steel yacht that I am restoring and unbeknownst to me when I bought the boat i thought it must have a keel… but it doesn’t? It has a 6 inch drop down section where a keel could go or should go but it not there. Its just like it was an option for the design but then no one bothered to put on on. Any chance you got a similar yacht where you could cut the keel off and ship it to the Netherlands?

We don’t have anything at the moment, but I recommend you join our Facebook group ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/boatscrapyarduk ) for any updates about future boats and parts coming into stock.

What is an Insurance Salvage or Private Salvage Boat?

Insurance Salvage or Private Salvage Boats, are vessels that suffered DAMAGE, such as a collision, sinking, fire, etc.

Salvage Boats offer anyone handy, a fantastic opportunity to purchase a boat for significantly less than retail value. Many buyers re-sell the boats after repair; others keep the boats for their personal use.

It’s important to note that buying salvage is a good idea if you plan to do, at least, some of the work yourself, and you are ready to get your hands dirty!

All Salvage items are sold AS-IS, WHERE-IS

We offer absolutely no warrantee on any function of the boat. While there is a risk in buying salvage, surveyors and repairers can offer valuable opinions. But don’t be afraid – this could be your opportunity to own the boat you’ve always dreamed about, for less than you ever expected!

Please also note, that it is often difficult (but not impossible) to secure financing for a salvage vessel.

What kind of boats are listed on YachtSalvage.com?

When our company was founded, Yacht Salvage.com originally advertised vessels that were selling under what one would consider “unusual circumstances”, such as: Repossession, Insurance Salvage or simply that the owner had a strong desire to sell the boat quickly (Private Salvage / Private Liquidation).

As our business evolved, we have added Brokerage and Theft Recovery Boats.

Regardless of the selling circumstances, YachtSalvage.com offers buyers access to the photos and descriptions necessary to make preliminary evaluations. To sellers, we offer an extremely high traffic web site, known internationally.

Quick Definition: Insurance Salvage

Damaged Boats sold by an Insurance Company, attempting to recoup some of their loss.

Quick Definition: Repo

Repossessed vessels; financial institution attempting to recoup some of their loss.

Quick Definition: Two-Boat-Owner

A Private Seller, who has already purchased a new boat, and is selling his/her old one.

Quick Definition: Donation

Certified Sales is the designated Broker for a number of Charities. Once a boat is donated CSI markets and sells the boat for the Charity. The Gross Sale price (less expenses) are then remitted to the Charity.

Does Certified Sales Inc. list other boats?

Absolutely! Visit www.certifiedsales.com to look at the others! As you will see, this site is not only for the “unusual” boats. We sell many perfect, or near-perfect boats…that don’t require much work and are selling under normal brokerage situations. You may find one that fits your needs perfectly!

Does Certified Sales Inc. provide financing?

No, we do not provide financing. However, we can direct you to a lender who will assist you. Occasionally, the seller is willing to provide financing for the boat. If that applies, we will inform you.

Does Certified Sales Inc. take trade-ins?

Nope. However, we are more than happy to help you sell your boat! “Big or Small, we sell them all!”

What is a survey? How can I find a surveyor?

Certified Sales Inc., the provider of this website, is an affiliate member of both SAMS and NAMS, two national associations of Marine Surveyors. Both organizations can provide extensive information regarding the importance of a survey, its uses in the boat-buying and -selling process, and the names of local surveyors across the country.

How do I secure insurance for a (damaged) boat?

There are many different insurance companies available to protect your new marine purchase. If you need assistance finding one, please contact us .

How is the sinking of Mike Lynch's Bayesian superyacht being investigated?

As divers recover the seventh and final body from the wreckage, questions are now turning to how the tragedy could have happened.

Italian authorities are leading the investigation into the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht, which has left seven people dead.

The body of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch was among those recovered from the shipwreck, off the coast of Sicily, this week. His 18-year-old daughter Hannah is believed to be the final body divers pulled from the wreckage on Friday.

Of the 22 people on board the Bayesian, 15 survived.

Here we look at how the disaster is being investigated.

Who is investigating the sinking?

A criminal investigation was opened immediately after the tragedy, despite the fact no suspects have been identified publicly.

Investigators from the public prosecutor's office in the Sicilian town of Termini Imerese are collecting evidence for that investigation.

The UK's Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has deployed a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment.

It is understood they will look at all relevant aspects of the sinking, including the design, stability, and operation of the vessel. They will also examine the effects of the weather conditions experienced.

The MAIB does not look to establish blame or liability but seeks to discover the causes of accidents at sea and prevent similar incidents in future.

Witnesses to face 'methodical' questioning

The case is likely to carry on for months.

Investigators will take their time, speaking to survivors and eyewitnesses, as well as examining physical evidence.

They have already started to question witnesses, including the vessel's captain James Cutfield.

Obtaining witness testimony as soon as possible will be key for the authorities investigating the disaster, according to experts.

James Wilkes, a marine investigator, told Sky News those examining the sinking will want to speak to those who survived or saw what happened "while the memories are fresh in their mind".

"I'd like to explore the circumstances in which they were able to survive the storm and the sinking, to look at the anomalies and work out the difference between those and the people that sadly didn't survive, and combine it all with technical data and simulation."

Mr Wilkes added investigators must work through evidence "methodically and meticulously".

News of the sinking left CEO of The Italian Sea Group Giovanni Costantino in ‘sadness on the one hand and disbelief on the other’.

Will the shipwreck form part of the investigation?

Questions have been raised about whether the sunken yacht will be salvaged during the investigation.

The Italian coastguard has said a decision on whether to raise the vessel from the seabed was "not a topic on the agenda" at the moment - but "will be" in the future.

Nick Barke, head of salvage operations at Boats.co.uk, a boat sales and services company, said the "only real way of knowing" why the yacht sank would be to lift it to the surface.

The Bayesian had an extractable keel (an underwater fin) that was almost 10 metres in length when extended and acted as a counterbalance for the vessel.

Its final position will be crucial for investigators to discover.

If it was stowed when the storm hit, it would have made the yacht much less stable.

"That is a key fact that needs to be established," Matthew Schnack, chairman of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told Sky News.

"That keel in effect will lower the centre of gravity of the vessel and make it more stable.

"And if that keel was lifted up, it could have had significant impact on the vessel's ability to stay upright when the storm hit."

Investigators are also likely to look at whether any openings - such as windows and doors - were open on the vessel, which could have allowed it to fill with water more quickly, as well as the impact of the 72m mast - the second tallest in the world.

The yacht belonged to British tech tycoon Mike Lynch who remains missing.

Questions raised about human error

The chief executive of a firm which makes and sells yachts like the Bayesian believes the sinking may have been due to a series of human mistakes.

Giovanni Constantino, CEO of the Italian Sea Group, told Sky News the storm on Monday had been expected .

Mr Costantino asked: "Why was the ship in that situation? The storm was readable… We must ask ourselves why none of the fishermen in the port of Porticello went out at sea that night? Why did no one go out to sea?

"Everyone knew about the storm. And then, if a fisherman knew, why the commander of a ship of such importance, with guests of such level and importance, with 12 guests on board... Why wasn't he in an alert situation?"

Mr Constantino had earlier told Sky News there were no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian and vessels like the stricken superyacht were "unsinkable".

The chief executive has also been pushing the same message to Italian media outlets.

"A Perini boat survived the Category 5 Katrina hurricane. Do you think one couldn't survive a waterspout here?" he told the Corriere della Sera newspaper, referring to a type of tornado which is believed to have hit the Bayesian.

But as well as the possibility of human mistakes, investigators will also look at whether the yacht was technically sound, and how rare the tornado weather event was which led to the sinking.
