9 Things You Didn’t Know About ‘Victorious,’ a 252-Foot Superyacht With Its Own Fireplace and Indoor Pool

Superyacht Explorer Victorious

Victorious might look shiny-new, tied to her superyacht dock at this week’s Miami International Boat Show. But it took more the 18 years to get here.

Rewind to 2006. The steel-and-aluminum shell of a 252-foot explorer yacht is sitting in a shipyard in Santiago, Chile, with no money to complete. Kiwi serial yacht owner and billionaire Graeme Hart puts in an offer, and has the yacht towed to his native New Zealand for completion.

After two years of work, Hart switches his attention to his new superyacht project, the 380-foot Kleven-built explorer called Ulysses . Eight years later, he sells the yacht in 2016 to Turkish entrepreneur Vural Ak. After having the yacht towed to Istanbul, Ak he creates a shipyard, appropriately called AKYacht. The yard extends the hull’s length 18 feet and creates a beautiful interior. Victorious is finally completed in 2021. The following year it receives a “2022 Robb Report Best of the Best” award.

After three years of circling the globe, Victorious is now looking for a new owner, with an asking price of $129 million.

37,000 Nautical Miles Without Starting an Engine

yacht with steam room

Part of the remarkable story about Victorious was that, before its completion in 2021, it was towed a total of 37,000 miles, from Chile to New Zealand, then New Zealand to Istanbul, Turkey. Starting life as the 252-foot Gin Tonic II at the Marco Yachts yard in Santiago, the bare-bones vessel was bought by New Zealand billionaire Graeme Hart in 2011. The empty hull was then towed, along with 100 containers of parts, across the Southern Ocean to Auckland. After on-again, off-again work, the yacht was sold to Vural Ak in 2016, who had her towed back to Turkey.

Built for a Sportscar Enthusiast

The checkered-flag burgee on Victorious ‘s bow gives a hint as to the interests of its high-profile owner, Turkish billionaire Vural Ak. The founder of Turkey’s biggest rental-car firm, Intercity, is said to have an eclectic collection of over 300 vehicles, including an array of Porsches, Lamborghinis, and even tractors. He has raced in the GT3 series across Europe and competed in the grueling Dakar Rally. Ak also loves F1, so he owns the Intercity Istanbul Park racetrack in Turkey, which plays host to the Turkish Formula 1 Grand Prix. When Victorious debuted at the Monaco boat show in 2021, Ak parked a new Bentley Continental GT on the helipad.

The Yacht Can Travel 24,000 Miles on a Single Tank

yacht with steam room

Victorious is powered by a pair of industrial-grade Caterpillar 3512B 12-cylinder turbocharged diesels packing 1,475 hp apiece. These can push the superyacht to a top speed of 17 knots, though it’s designed more for comfort than speed. At a 13-knot cruising pace, the yacht has a range of 14,000 nautical miles. But throttle back to an ocean-crossing seven knots and it will cover a staggering 24,000 nautical miles with 70,000-gallon fuel tanks. So filling up at $4-a-gallon would cost $280,000.

Space for a Very Large Family

yacht with steam room

For its role as a globe-trotting family yacht, Victorious has space to spare. The 12 cabins create space for 24 guests, with the owner enjoying the vast, full-beam master suite on the bridge deck facing aft or the equally spacious VIP suite on the main deck. For fun at sea, the boat has a 10-seat, tiered, sound-proofed cinema, a playroom for the kids, an observation lounge with full-size grand piano, and a formal dining room for 14.

All the Toys

yacht with steam room

The biggest “toy” on board is a 42-foot custom-built, all-aluminum limousine catamaran, designed by Britain’s H2 Design, with a special drop-down section on the bow for beach landings. It’s powered by twin 480 hp Cummins diesels and sits on the superyacht’s huge back deck and is launched by a 6.7-ton-capacity crane. For fishing adventures, a 38-foot Fountain center console with twin 300-horse outboards does the trick, and when the kids want to go water skiing, the crew will fire up the rugged 25-foot Nordkapp Airborne 8 RIB. Add to these three Sea-Doo GTX 230 jet bikes, four Seabob F5s, two electric Fliteboard foilers, and a pair of Radinn electric jetsurfs.

Going off the Grid

yacht with steam room

Come the Apocalypse, Victorious can go off the grid and be totally self-sufficient for up to six months. With full water tanks, it carries 33,655 gallons of water, supplemented by watermakers that can churn out 13,000 gallons a day. For internal power, there are no fewer than five generators, including two 465kW Caterpillar C18-powered units, and to keep the food frosty, there are 18 fridges, freezers, and ice makers. For the Dom Pérignon, there are two EuroCave 200-bottle chillers. Add to these seven Miele washing machines, six dryers, and five dishwashers. And if anyone gets sick, there’s an onboard hospital.

A Day at the Beach

yacht with steam room

No need to head to the real beach when Victorious ‘ lower-deck beach club spans 2,153 square feet. It features an indoor pool open to the stern deck that can be filled with either fresh or salt water, with a counter-current for exercising. Steps away is the yacht’s wellness center with a massage room, a beauty salon, a spa and a hamman steam room. The fitness room comes with the latest Technogym equipment. For perfecting your best Greg Louganis dives, there are oversized fold-down terraces at sea level on both port and starboard.

Top Deck Gentleman’s Club

yacht with steam room

Step into the somewhat risque-sounding Gentleman’s Club on the top deck, and one of the highlights is a stunning, wood-burning marble fireplace, fed by more than two tons of logs the yacht carries onboard. Installing traditional fireplaces on a yacht is a challenge at best, so a separate air conditioning and air-filtration system was installed, along with smoke-resistant upholstery. There is also a cigar bar with an aft terrace to enjoy that stogie under the stars, plus a wine cellar and humidor. Perhaps the pièces de résistance are the massive, ’30s concert-hall-style, floor-to-ceiling speakers on either side of the fireplace, for blasting out tunes.

It Rescued Capsized Sailors in the Caribbean

yacht with steam room

Back in December 2022, the explorer was on a transatlantic crossing from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean island of Saint Martin when it intercepted a distress signal from the five-man crew of a capsized 50-foot catamaran. Petar Milkov, Victorious ‘s captain, responded by changing course and starting a search pattern. After 15 hours of crisscrossing, and at 11.30 p.m., his crew spotted a speck of light on the horizon. The sailors, most badly injured in their inflatable raft, were able to fire off a distress flare, allowing Victorious to pinpoint their position. Early in the morning, the sailors were pulled aboard and the yacht rushed to Saint Martin for medical assistance.

This Brand-new Ship Has One of the Largest Yacht Clubs in Its Fleet, Endless Adventure, and a Glass-bottomed Bridge

MSC Seascape just set sail — here's what it's like on board.

yacht with steam room

Christine Burroni

The MSC Seascape may share many similar — or even identical — features with its predecessors, but when it comes to luxury, the fleet’s newest vessel certainly leveled up. The new ship sailed on its inaugural journey with guests from Rome to New York City this past weekend and will go on to sail out of Miami to the Caribbean for future trips.

While the European cruise line has become known for its luxury ship-within-a-ship concept, called Yacht Club , the Seascape boasts one of its largest clubs with 131 suites — with five categories to choose from — taking up 32,000 square feet. Located at the front of the ship, most exclusive Yacht Club spaces, like the private dining area or pool deck, are afforded sweeping ocean views.

Courtesy of MSC Cruises

In addition to a private restaurant with a regularly changing menu, and both indoor and outdoor lounge space, passengers who make a Yacht Club reservation are treated to expedited embarkation, 24-hour butler and concierge service, and access to the spa’s Thermal Suite where a sauna, steam room, and whirlpool awaits. Members will also have access to the ship's Top Sail Lounge for coffee, tea, and light bites at any time of day.

Yacht Club guests also enjoy the ship's premium drink package, an unpacking or packing service, a morning newspaper delivery of their choice, and the ability to select a specific pillow for customized comfort.

Sailing the blue water of the Caribbean while tucked in a super-exclusive setting may seem exceptionally relaxing, but the MSC Seascape also offers just the opposite for those looking for a bit of an adrenaline rush — with an extreme thrill ride and virtual reality experiences.

Adrenaline junkies can take a ride on the ship's Robotron , an attraction unique to the ship that will bring riders nearly 175 feet above water and flip upside down, moving in all directions to offer unobstructed 360-degree views.

Those looking to keep their feet on the ground can still get their adventure fix with a walk across the Bridge of Sighs, a 72-foot-high glass-bottomed bridge.

The MSC Seascape is also home to a variety of virtual reality experiences. Riders can choose from Formula 1 racing, a flight simulator, and motorcycle riding.

“ MSC Seascape is an exciting addition to our fleet of Seaside Class ships with its elevated onboard experiences that will surprise and delight all ages," Ruben Rodriguez, President, MSC Cruises USA exclusively told Travel + Leisure. " From one of the largest and most luxurious Yacht Clubs in our fleet to interactive, high-tech experiences like the first Robotron at sea and immersive VR experiences, MSC Seascape brings unparalleled entertainment and thrills to our guests.”

Elsewhere on board, the ship’s interior is very similar to that of MSC’s other vessels, like the line's one-year-old MSC Seashore, including its Times Square–inspired décor, Swarovski crystal–adorned staircases, and Atrium space where live entertainment takes place.

Fans of the ship's fleet will also recognize its signature restaurants including Butcher's Cut steakhouse, Ocean Cay seafood restaurant, and more. Its lively sports bar is the perfect spot to catch any game around the world — and there are 18 other bars and lounges on board, some of which offer live music.

MSC Seascape journeys set sail from Miami to the Caribbean where passengers can visit the company's private Bahamas island, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

Onboard Obsession: The New Ritz-Carlton Yacht's Spa Terrace Takes Deep Relaxation to the Bow of a Mega Yacht

By Shannon McMahon

Onboard Obsession is a new series that explores the can't-miss highlights of the best-loved cruises—from the shore excursions to book to the spa treatments too relaxing to pass up.

No matter how much you plan for travel, it can be a haul— especially right now . So thankfully there are those rare, deep-relaxation moments on vacation; although they can be far and few when you’re on the road, negotiating your time against all that you hope to see. Among some of my personal favorites are two particularly meditative options: The aftermath of a splurge-worthy spa experience ; emerging fresh from an intense massage, hot sauna, or soothing skin treatment, wrapped in a warm terry-cloth robe and savoring the buzz in a serene relaxation room where everyone’s a little bit flushed, hair-tousled, and not quite ready to depart their cocoon. The other, for me, is drinking in an ocean horizon line from the bow of a boat—something meditative on its own, but particularly hypnotizing when you can linger over the view, preferably with a beverage in hand, hearing the waves lap the sides of the bow and feeling the salt air whip toward you from an endless stretch of waves.

It’s even rarer to get the opportunity to combine these two supremely tranquil states of being—but that's exactly the experience that the Evrima , the first ship from Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection , has achieved. The hotel brand’s first and only 623-foot ship began sailing the European Mediterranean this fall. (The yacht's five- to 12-day journeys head for the Caribbean this winter.) At sea since October, the super yacht houses six restaurants, 149 guest rooms (all are suites with private balconies) and will be matched with two sister ships coming in 2024 and 2025.

The ninth-deck spa terrace onboard Ritz-Carlton Evrima , the hotel brand's first Yacht Collection ship

The Ritz-Carlton Evrima ’s ninth deck spa is perhaps the best symbol of the concept that the brand is newly pursuing: All the comforts of a five-star hotel, taken to sea on a vessel small enough to reach ports the big ships don’t. As Ritz-Carlton already has the firepower of a beloved spa concept, the at-sea version of its signature massage delivers: Knowledgeable and experienced therapists (the ship amassed thousands of resumes in hiring for 250 crew positions) who customize treatments to your needs, plus aromatherapy-forward techniques, ESPA products, and high-tech treatment rooms all had me feeling more like I was at a spa retreat rather than floating somewhere off the Cote d’Azur.

On a recent sailing between Antibes and Sanary-sur-mer in the French Riviera, Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection CEO Doug Prothero—who’s a former sea captain himself—told me that the Spa Terrace's creation was a happy accident: It was initially meant to serve as a supplement to the fitness center, reserved for exercise classes. And while it still does serve as such for morning programming options like yoga and meditation, spa-goers have discovered it and made the deck their own. This is perhaps thanks to the hot tub that serves as something of a figurehead of the ship, bubbling steam from the frontmost point of the deck like a beacon in the distance. The wind-screened cabana pods and sun beds facing the sea are also perfect for post-treatment naps to extend that post-spa glow, or for simply taking in the approaching shoreline with a glass of champagne in hand. In my case, the Belle Epoque buildings of fabulous Monaco, where I had spent the morning walking a long loop of the city, were the perfect backdrop to a cool down after a steam in the spa’s sauna.

The happy accident that made the spa deck also makes it evident that hotel-at-sea cruises like Ritz-Carlton’s Evrima are being fluid and agile as the first of their kind at sea. This aims to be a non-cruise, as evidenced by the “yacht” heavy branding. Evrima (meaning “discovery,” in Greek) swaps overindulgence for glamor and relaxation. Anything even remotely resembling a buffet has been nixed for six elevated- to fine-dining food venues—the main star on Evrima , in particular, is a small five-course dining venue by three-Michelin-star chef Sven Elverfeld of the Ritz-Carlton Wolfsbug in Germany (which costs an extra, $285 per-head fee with wine pairings).

The replacement for shore excursions? Ritz-Carlton “experiences” that leave plenty of free time for your own adventure (also for a fee), plus multi-day dockings encouraging passengers to step ashore (or take a small tender boat) to explore the mainland on their own, by day or night. Onboard, live-music in communal bar areas await groups when they return to the ship in the evening. In Prothero and Ritz-Carlton’s telling of the bookings, Evrima passengers are so far made up of non-cruisers seeking more time ashore: A vast majority (about 80 percent) of passengers have never cruised before, and most guests are between the ages of 35 to 55. For two guests, Caribbean sailings start at about $10,000 per week—European itineraries start at about $12,000.

There's no denying the 623-foot, 300-guest ship is still something of a playground—you could fit three mega yachts (which start at about 60 meters) on the length of Evrima . It’s perfect for those who dream of a Below Deck -style getaway with enough space to make new friends. But it still manages to feel special, especially in its quiet spaces and the moments between tiring yourself out ashore and getting a nightcap amid the Observation Deck’s rowdy piano bar singalongs.

Not usually one to imbibe during a wellness focused activity, I initially turned down a glass of champagne on my arrival to the Evrima spa. But emerging from a dim steam room to the fresh air of the Spa Terrace about an hour later, feeling wholly invigorated, I gave in upon a second offer from a server staffing the terrace. Soaking in Monaco from that wind-whipped perch after working out all the muscle kinks of a morning walking around on shore—that’s one of those rare, slow travel moments I’ll savor for a long time, until I can nab the next one.

Delphine ii, the last big steam-powered yacht.

By Gérald Guétat , Sep 1, 2016

Delphine II original blueprint

Original blueprint of the SS Delphine II .

At the origins of the Dodge industrial empire were two inseparable brothers, Horace and John, natives of a small Michigan town. The family was poor and the Dodge boys went to school barefooted. John preferred to look after horses, while his younger brother admired the passing boats on the nearby river. They had a younger sister, named Delphine. Horace loved above all to tinker, to invent small machines, and to play the piano, and his brother never seemed to raise his nose from reading books. At the turn of the 1900s, the Dodge brothers opened a little bicycle factory before operating a machine tool workshop. Horace had a genius for assembling high-precision parts. Soon, growing firms like Oldsmobile and Cadillac could not do without their subcontractor, the Dodge Brothers Company. Henry Ford also needed their services to manufacture some essential components for his first cars. As money to pay his bills was short, Ford offered to pay the two brothers in shares of his company. The Dodges’ fortune was made.

Horace Dodge could give free rein to his childhood love of boats. In 1903, when he was 35 years old, he bought his first 40 ‘ (12.2m) launch. The long, slender hulls of those touring launches were powered by steam engines designed and built by their owner. In 1910, he commissioned architect Henry John Gielow to design the 183 ‘ (56m) Nokomis , the family’s first large cruising yacht, powered, not surprisingly, by two Dodge steam engines. Following the 243 ‘ (74m) Nokomis II , in 1918, the automaker had Gielow design an even more prestigious yacht. The Great Lakes Engineering Works of River Rouge, Michigan, was in charge of constructing the largest steam yacht ever built in the U.S. Its length had to be limited to 262 ‘ (80m) to fit the locks of the Welland Canal and the Saint Lawrence River.

Delphine II stateroom

The main stateroom with piano and bar was restored, including the sliding windows with levers. On the bar is a thermos bottle in the shape of a coastal light, a gift from the Dodge family to Bruynooghe, recognizing Delphine II ’s renaissance.

This private ocean liner, built of 12mm-thick steel, was christened Delphine II in homage to Horace’s sister and to his young daughter. Onboard saloons, smoking rooms, a great staircase, apartments with fireplaces and bathrooms, all paneled with precious woods, could host about 18 guests and a crew of 52. Horace Dodge decided he would personally design the engineroom with two quadruple-expansion engines of 1,500 hp (1,125 kW) each. Horace Dodge died of pneumonia three months before the launching of his masterpiece. His brother John followed him a few weeks later, struck by the same illness. On April 2, 1921, Horace’s daughter swung the traditional bottle of champagne on Delphine II ’s hull.

Delphine II steam engines

The two 1,500-hp (1,125-kW) quadruple-expansion steam engines were designed by Horace Dodge, who died just three months before the launching.

In 1925, Anna Dodge, Horace’s widow, and her sister-in-law made a fortune by selling their shares in the family business. Anna Dodge fitted the yacht for long-range cruising. The great steamer then voyaged around the Great Lakes and along the East Coast. During a stopover in New York, a fire sank the boat. The owner, who fortunately was not on board, had it raised and completely repaired by Brooklyn Shipyard.

Soon after the United States entered World War II, Anna Dodge received a requisition order from the U.S. Navy. In May 1942, the steam yacht was convoyed by a military crew from Detroit to Washington, where the Navy armed her with guns, painted her green and gray, and renamed her USS Dauntless . She was then assigned to the command of the chief of naval operations as the flagship of Admiral Ernest King. The USS Dauntless voyaged little during the war years but served as a residence and remote meeting place reserved for high-ranking officials. After the Japanese surrender, Delphine II was returned to her private owner, who refit her at great expense.

During World War II, the 262' (80m) Delphine II was conscripted by the U.S. Navy, armed, painted camouflage colors, and renamed USS Dauntless.

Delphine II stern deck

Even Jacques Bruynooghe’s impeccable restoration wasn’t able to make the chartering enterprise a success.

But times had changed and steam yachts definitely belonged to a bygone era. The aging ship, no longer of interest to the family, was entrusted in 1968 to a merchant marine academy. In 1989, a Singapore-based company bought the old vessel and sent it from America to Asia with a long stopover in Malta. Next, a French business group moved her to Marseille, where she was later abandoned. In 1997, Jacques Bruynooghe, a Belgian textile industrialist, came to the rescue, planning a huge restoration project and a charter business. The restoration took about six years. The steam engines underwent a fascinating reconstruction.

In 2003, Delphine II was relaunched as the last and only large steam yacht in the world, but Bruynooghe’s charter business was not successful. He put her up for sale in 2004 for € 46 million, reduced 12 years later to € 16 million. Today, this rare witness to a glorious era lies in Monaco awaiting a new owner. It’s listed for € 19.75 million on www.jamesedition.fr.

The 101-year-old classic yacht that runs on steam

yacht with steam room

The SS Delphine is an iconic yacht that reached a major milestone in April 2021: celebrate its 100th birthday . Now, a year older, the yacht has been renovated on the inside but still uses steam to move around.

“She is the only superyacht in the world still operating today with her quadruple expansion steam engines,” -Emmanuel R Buetss, SS Delphine’s Manager.

SS Delphine’s origins

Although it was built for Horace Dodge , American automobile manufacturer pioneer, the 78-metre yacht has hosted heads of states while they planned peace treaties . SS Delphine was launched in 1921 at Great Lakes Engineering Works . At that time, she had the largest gross tonnage of any yacht in America.

Originally it was equipped with Babcock & Wilcoz boilers. These supplied power for her two 1,500-horsepower steam engines. However, the engine room was updated in 2003 during a refit. Now, two modern water-tube boilers that power the original engines.

In 1926 the SS Delphine was almost destroyed after catching fire and sinking in New York. However, she was miraculously salvaged and restored.

Christened as the USS Dauntless

In 1942 SS Delphine was requisitioned by the US Navy and christened the USS Dauntless. During this time, she served as the flagship for naval commander Admiral Ernest King during WWII.

Once the war was over, she hosted US president Franklin D Roosevelt, vice president Harry S Truman, UK prime minister Winston Churchill and Russian diplomat Vyacheslav Molotov . This was when they prepared for the Yalta Conference, the event that determined how Europe would be reorganised after the war.

“The privileged status of having been Admiral Ernest King’s ship certainly helped her avoid the unfortunate fate of other steamships that did not survive the war, allowing her to delight us today with her original splendor.” -Buetss

Times of changes

Once WWII was over, she returned to the Dodge family. However, over the next 50 years she changed of owners on several occasions. As a result, by 1997 her condition had worsened, so although the owner paid a low price for the vessel he had to pay €45 million to restore the iconic yacht to its former glory.

During the five-year restoration, her original Tiffany décor layout and design was kept as possible.

“That is indeed why sailing on board the SS Delphine is not only a maritime journey, but above all a journey through time that takes us back to the Belle Époque of the 1920s in the decorations, carvings, wall patterns and carpets that are exact replicas of the 1921 plans,” -Buetss

In 2003 the yacht changed names once again, this time by HSH Princess Stephanie de Monaco. Now, the current owners offer exclusive events aboard the yacht and charters in the Mediterranean.

You might find interesting: How expensive is it to charter a luxury yacht?

“Sailing on SS Delphine is not only a visual pleasure but also the opportunity to enjoy a steam engine which, beyond its timeless aesthetics, also offers a unique noiseless and vibration-free comfort forgotten by the hectic modern machines,” -Buetss

The SS Delphine can receive up to 26 guests to sleep onboard and up to 150 guests for day events . Moreover, she is now equipped with modern comforts expected from a charter yacht: she has a sauna, jacuzzi, hammam, gym, swimming pool and a dressing room. This together with her Tiffany décor in her dining rooms, lounges and suites make her a unique vessel.

On board the SS Delphine, one of the last steam yachts in the world..

yacht with steam room

Launched at the beginning of the last century, the SS Delphine is one of the last steam yachts to sail in its original configuration. Guided tour aboard a time machine.

Maxime Leriche

An authentic steam yacht

Built in the tradition of the great American steamers of the early 19th century, the SS Delphine was launched in 1921, on behalf of Horace Dodge, co-founder of the eponymous car manufacturer, who died four months before launching , having succumbed to the Spanish flu.

She is the only yacht of this era to have remained in her original configuration, with a steam-powered propulsion unit. The engine room of the SS Delphine is equipped with three Babcock and Wilcox boilers, which feed two quadruple expansion engines developing 1500hp each. Hence the two letters "SS" for "Steam Ship".

Shipwreck , Spanish flu and Yalta agreements

The SS Delphine had an eventful life. Following a fire , it was wrecked in New York harbor in 1926. Refloated and restored, she continued to sail on the Great Lakes until the beginning of the Second World War.

SS. Delphine, un yacht à vapeur

Like many other yachts at that time, she was requisitioned by the US Navy and converted into a warship. Renamed USS Dauntless, she was equipped with several guns and repainted in grey camouflage. Used as Admiral Ernest King's personal ship, it was on board that Winston Churchill and President Roosevelt prepared the Yalta Conference.

After the war, the ship was bought by his widow, who renamed the boat after their daughter, Delphine.

A seductress who deserves all the attention

During the next 50 years, SS Delphine knew several owners. But the beauty did not get all the attention she deserved and her condition deteriorated for many years. Her current owner, the Belgian Jacques Bruynooghe, bought her in 1997 as a wreck . Her restoration at great expense (for an amount of around 40 million euros), was carried out in a Belgian naval during 6 years.

SS. Delphine, un yacht à vapeur

This long restoration has allowed Delphine to regain its original configuration, but now requires meticulous daily maintenance , especially for its steam engine, manufactured more than a century ago.

SS. Delphine, un yacht à vapeur

" At first glance, the engines seem very simple, especially without electronics, but when it comes to maintenance, it's another matter " according to Willem, the chief mechanic. " And when a part is defective, it is not easy to find it on the market: it must be custom-made by specialized yards! Consequently, this means that you have to be able to anticipate possible problems. This means being able to listen to the machine and to discern every little sign of weakness ".

SS. Delphine, un yacht à vapeur

A timeless charm

Its inverted bow, yellow chimney and the finesse of its lines give Delphine an atypical silhouette, well known on the Mediterranean coast. One of the main difficulties on a century-old yacht is to marry a claimed classicism with some modern equipment, essential for a charter activity.

SS. Delphine, un yacht à vapeur

Her venerable boilers develop only 3000 HP, far from the power race observed on modern yachts . But who cares! With a cruising speed of 13 knots, Delphine is far from being the fastest yacht, but she is undeniably the most charming.

Iconic Yachts: SS Delphine, the 100 year old classic yacht that's still running on steam

The iconic yacht SS Delphine has reached a major milestone, celebrating her 100th birthday in April, 2021. But there are many more accolades besides ringing in her centennial year that make 78 metre SS Delphine so noteworthy. From hosting heads of states while they brokered peace treaties to still running on her original steam engines to this day, this yacht is a true icon.

“She is the only superyacht in the world still operating today with her quadruple expansion steam engines,” says Emmanuel R Buetss, SS Delphine’s Manager. The classic yacht was originally equipped with triple Babcock & Wilcoz boilers, supplying power for her two 1,500-horsepower steam engines. The engine room received an update during a 2003 refit, and she was outfitted with two modern water-tube boilers, which now power the original engines.

The classic yacht SS Delphine was built for Horace Dodge, co-founder of the Dodge Brothers automotive manufacturer in America. She was launched in 1921 at Great Lakes Engineering Works. At the time of her launch, she had the largest gross tonnage of any yacht in America. A short time later in 1926 she was nearly destroyed after catching fire and sinking in New York. Rising like a phoenix from the ashes, she was salvaged and restored to live another day.

In 1942, SS Delphine was requisitioned by the US Navy and christened the USS Dauntless , serving as the flagship for naval commander Admiral Ernest King during WWII. In her time as an admiralty ship she hosted US president Franklin D Roosevelt, vice president Harry S Truman, UK prime minister Winston Churchill and Russian diplomat Vyacheslav Molotov in preparation of the Yalta Conference, which determined the postwar reorganisation of Europe.

“The privileged status of having been Admiral Ernest King's ship certainly helped her avoid the unfortunate fate of other steamships that did not survive the war, allowing her to delight us today with her original splendor,” says Buetss.

After WWII, she was returned to the Dodge family. Over the next five decades she changed hands many times. By 1997, she was in poor condition and her next owner paid a pittance for the iconic yacht but invested a princely sum of €45 million to restore her to her former glory during a five-year restoration project. The refit restored her original layout and design.

“That is indeed why sailing on board the SS Delphine is not only a maritime journey, but above all a journey through time that takes us back to the Belle Époque of the 1920s in the decorations, carvings, wall patterns and carpets that are exact replicas of the 1921 plans,” says Buetss.

In September 2003, SS Delphine was re-christened by HSH Princess Stephanie de Monaco. The current owners bought the vessel in 2015, and she is now offered for exclusive events and charters in the Mediterranean. She can welcome up to 26 guests for overnight stay and 150 guests for day events.

The iconic yacht SS Delphine is now equipped with all the modern comforts one would expect on a charter yacht, including a sauna, hammam, Jacuzzi, gym, swimming pool and even a hairdressing room. But despite these updates, she still has an beautifully old soul. SS Delphine has retained her 1921 Tiffany décor whenever possible, and in particular in her dining room, lounges and suites.

“Sailing on SS Delphine is not only a visual pleasure but also the opportunity to enjoy a steam engine which, beyond its timeless aesthetics, also offers a unique noiseless and vibration-free comfort forgotten by the hectic modern machines,” says Buetss.

Setting Sail on the MSC Seashore: An honest critique of a 7-day journey

Msc cruises gets a lot of negative feedback from cruisers.

However – some people really enjoy the experience MSC Provides. Based on my recent Seashore experience, I can understand why.

But let’s be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of MSC. That’s why I’m quite happy about the experience on the Seashore. Having sailed on the Meraviglia and Lirica (and soon the World Europa), my expectations were low.

A Look at the MSC Seashore

Having recently concluded a surprisingly delightful seven-day voyage aboard the MSC Seashore, I’m eager to share my insights and experiences. This perspective, while grounded in my personal encounters, also reflects conversations with fellow passengers, offering a well-rounded view of what to expect on this beautiful cruise ship.

MSC Seashore Quick Stats:

  • Gross Tonnage: 169,400 GT
  • Length: 339 meters
  • Decks: 20 total, 15 guest decks
  • Passenger capacity: 5,877
  • Number of cabins: 2,270
  • Crew members: 1,648
  • Launched 2021

The cabins on the MSC Seashore

The MSC Seashore, a testament to modern cruise ship design, offers an array of amenities and experiences. Its accommodations are a standout feature, meriting a solid 10/10. The rooms are not only spacious but also feature contemporary furnishings and all necessary conveniences. Housekeeping services, offered twice daily, ensure a consistently clean and comfortable environment. Storage space is ample, with a sizable closet, a safe, and multiple drawers. The mini-fridge, while it comes with an additional charge for drinks, is convenient. The balcony is equipped with expected basic chairs and a table and provides a nice private outdoor retreat. In-room amenities like a hairdryer, and eco-friendly shampoo and shower gel refills, are basic but suitable. ** Note: there is no conditioner provided! The shower gels aren’t the best – so if you’re a shampoo and conditioner snob, bring your own!

TIP: The stewards are a bit stealthy and aren’t always visible like on other cruise lines – so if you need something like extra hangers, don’t wait too long! The cabin stewards are usually around more on embarkation day.

Setting Sail on the MSC Seashore: An honest critique of a 7-day journey 1

Like all other modern MSC Ships, there is a selection of Suites available.

Suites on this ship are categorized into MSC Yacht Club suites and Aurea suites.

Aurea suites offer special amenities like welcome gifts, round-the-clock room service, and exclusive access to the Aurea sun deck. Select Aurea suites feature whirlpool baths on their balconies and ample storage space, with some including a bathtub in addition to a standing shower.

The more compact Junior Aurea suites resemble an Aurea balcony cabin, distinguished by their significantly larger balconies. Meanwhile, the MSC Yacht Club represents the epitome of luxury suite options on the MSC Seashore. These suites surpass all others in opulence and come with an array of extensive benefits.

The suites are spacious, and contemporary, and vary from interior suites with additional living space to the extravagant owner’s suite, which boasts a spacious terrace with a balcony and an outdoor dining area.

MSC Yacht Club privileges encompass complimentary WiFi, 24-hour concierge service, priority spa access, round-the-clock butler service, and exclusive access to certain areas not available to regular passengers.

This includes a private panoramic lounge that blends indoor and outdoor spaces, two exclusive restaurants, and two private swimming pools, all reserved solely for MSC Yacht Club guests.

Entertainment options onboard

The shows and entertainment are diverse and cater to a wide range of preferences, rightly deserving a 10/10 rating. The ship has multiple bars and lounges, each with its unique ambiance. Live music is a regular feature in at least three venues every night, offering everything from jazz at the Brooklyn Cafe to piano duels at Times Square. Dance enthusiasts can enjoy a variety of classes, while the nightly dance parties keep the energy high. The 35-minute shows at the theater showcase exceptional talent. The ship also fosters community through various meet-ups, catering to different interests and backgrounds. Morning yoga sessions and an array of day-long activities led by the animation team ensure that there’s never a dull moment.

The Fitness Facilities, pools and chill out areas of the MSC Seashore are exemplary

The fitness and relaxation facilities are a big surprise. The gym is spacious and well-equipped, and the complimentary sauna is a nice touch. For anyone inspired to workout while on a cruise vacation, my hat is off to you. But those who are looking for top-notch treadmills, weight machines, and exercise space will be very happy with what the Seashore has to offer.

Expert tip!

Many people don’t realize there is a free sauna on the MSC Seashore . There is a completely separate access from the back of the gym where the cables workout is. There you will find locker rooms and a free sauna. (no steam room – that is in the Aurea Spa)

The ship has multiple pools, including the striking Infinity Pool on Deck 8 and the Jungle Pool on Deck 16, surrounded by whirlpools and ample lounging space. The Hall of Games and the sports arena offer active entertainment, while the Aurea spa provides a range of services, including a barber shop.

The Dining on the MSC Seashore

The dining experience onboard MSC Seashore presents a mixed bag. While specialty restaurants like the Sushi Bar and the Butchers Cut Steak House have garnered positive feedback, the main dining options have a lot of room for improvement, particularly in terms of consistency and quality. Food is subjective of course, but it was universally underwhelming in the main dining room. In all fairness, some fellow passengers were commenting that they were just happy to not be at home doing dishes and cooking. So if that is the measure of how good the experience is, you’ll be fine. Just don’t expect anything special and you’ll likely not be disappointed.

The Marketplace Buffet is a more reliable choice for many but it’s always extremely busy and sometimes downright frantic – like a full panic where you’d think it was the end of the world and there was no more food left. Puzzling really. You can’t beat the pizza served, even though it was a bit repetitive.

Included restaurants on the Seashore:

  • 5th Avenue Restaurant, one of the three main dining rooms, serving sit-down, classic cruise fare
  • Tribeca Restaurant, another main dining room
  • Central Park Restaurant, the third and final main dining room
  • Manhattan Restaurant, the main dining room only for Aurea guests
  • The Yacht Club Restaurant, only open to Yacht Club guests
  • The One Pool Grill & Bar, also only open to Yacht Club guests
  • Marketplace Buffet, a classic cruise ship buffet

Room service is available and depending on your cabin type, there may be a fee involved.

Additional cost & specialty restaurants on the Seashore:

  • Kaito Teppanaki
  • Ocean Cay, seafood focused (menu)
  • Butchers Cut, steakhouse experience (menu)
  • Kaito Sushi (menu)
  • Hola Tacos & Cantina, Mexican Food (menu)
  • Venchi 1878 Gelato, for sweets
  • Venchi 1878 Chocolate Bar

Drinks & Drink Packages

We’ve spent a lot of time trying to explain the MSC Drink Packages. They can be confusing.

  • Read : MSC Cruises Drinks Packages Explained

The Easy drinks package, including coffee, bottled water, and a selection of cocktails, offers good value but keep in mind if you plan on making use of the specialty dining restaurants, the Easy package does not work in those. You’ll need to upgrade to the Easy Plus package , which in the end is also a great value given the much larger selection of beverages available.

Bars included on the Seashore:

  • Brooklyn Cafe
  • The Champagne & Wine Bar
  • The Cocktail Bar (basically the lobby bar)
  • Jungle Pool Beach Bar
  • Le Cabaret Rouge
  • MSC Signature Casino Bar
  • Seashore Bar
  • Shine Bar (dining room-adjacent)
  • The Wine Cellar
  • Uptown Lounge
  • Infinity Bar, one of two poolside bars
  • Long Island Pool Bar, poolside outdoor bar
  • MSC Aurea Bar, the Aurea-specific sun deck bar

The Service on the Seashore

Service aboard the MSC Seashore, unfortunately, falls short of expectations in some areas. The attentiveness and responsiveness of the bartenders and servers could be enhanced, possibly through additional staffing or improved training. But these guys and girls work hard, it’s obvious. It makes me think they really just need to add staff for a better guest service experience.

It’s worth noting that people who cruise from America often feel that throwing tips at a bartender will get better service, and it often does…. on other cruise lines. However, the culture is slightly different on MSC. While the bartenders appreciate the tips, it doesn’t seem to motivate them like you’d see on other major lines. So it might be best to keep that cash to yourself and reward someone at the end if they provide excellent service. Bottom line: bribing doesn’t work like it used to! 🙂

In summary, the MSC Seashore scores a 7/10 overall in my opinion. It’s an ideal choice for large groups, seasoned travelers, and those who appreciate a multicultural atmosphere. The ship’s design and facilities exude luxury, though there’s potential for improvement in culinary offerings and service. For families, the MSC Seashore represents great value and is recommended for clients who value a blend of relaxation, entertainment, and a touch of luxury at sea.

84 Luxury Yacht Interiors: Bedroom, Galley and Salon Pictures

Azimut Atlantis 50 foot yacht interior design

A yacht is really just a luxury floating home . When you’re talking 70 feet and larger, they’re a lot nicer than my house. As you’ll see in the luxury yacht interiors below, the quality and aesthetics are simply gorgeous. And we merely feature a small handful of such boats. There are thousands and thousands of these worldwide.

Our epic yacht interiors article is split into 5 galleries:  staterooms, guest bedrooms , salons and dinettes, kitchens and bathrooms. The point of this article is to merely give you a glimpse inside these ultra expensive boats… expensive to buy, run and maintain. Be sure to also check out our yacht decks galleries .

Yacht Primary Bedrooms (Staterooms)

We kick off our yacht interiors gallery with the stateroom. When it comes to the primary bedroom on these boats, no expense is spared. They are large, comfortable and stunning in design. These bedrooms are bigger than our primary bedroom.

Yacht Guest Bedrooms (2 Beds)

Many guest bedrooms on a yacht have two beds so that it can accommodate more people. However, they are, as you’ll see below, still very, very luxurious. These are certainly cozy sleeping quarters.

Abacus 70 foot - bedroom 2 beds

Salon and Dinette Photos

My favorite room on the boat is the salon and/or dinette area. In many cases, the dinette doubles as the living room. Mega yachts have dedicated salons and dining areas. I love these superb lounge designs below in the cabin as well as the upper lounge areas.

Large yacht salon interior

I must admit that kitchens on these super yachts are fairly small. I guess the cooking is done by the staff and yacht owners prefer to have more space for bedrooms, deck space and lounge space. That makes sense given there really is limited space. Nevertheless, these kitchens are gorgeous and the yacht designers certainly didn’t skimp with respect to quality.

yacht kitchen interior design

Most boats dedicate very little space to bathrooms. Not these. The primary bathrooms below are incredible. The smaller bathrooms are guest bathrooms. These luxury yachts are so large and spacious that even the bathrooms are both beautiful and comfortable to use.

Hello  Have a couple of longer cruises booked on Splendida and Magnifica

How are the Steam/Sauna areas now  Generally like to go and relax before dinner  with others and discuss the days happenings with other cruisers  but have read a couple of posts where the rooms needed to be booked and you are basically solo there now rather than the usual social gathering of people in the sauna/steam room.  any one been lately?

AUSSIE - where did you read that they needed to be booked? Are these for specific ships in certain areas of the world? And were they recent articles? I was on a non-MSC cruise in June to Alaska and there were zero restriction in the thermal area. I wonder why MSC would be different.

We were on Seaview in the Med end of May and needed to make a reservation for the thermal spa. It really wasn't a big deal and could be booked on short notice.

MNPURPLE - Can you expand on that? I mean, did you need to book it on Thursday to enjoy it on Friday? Or could you call them at 9 a.m. and ask for a 10 a.m. reservation? Please share your detailed experience. Very much appreciate it. I will be on Meraviglia in 2023 and I sure hope there aren't restrictions in the thermal area!

No, we booked same day and sometimes for a visit within the hour. Our kids actually went quite a lot and were able to get in with even less notice.

Steam Room and Sauna are part of (inside) the Thermal Area of MSC Meraviglia.

You can buy Thermal Spa Pass for the length of the cruise ..or.. Thermal Spa Access is included in Yacht Club and Aurea Experience.

Steam Room and Sauna can not be reserved.

Thermal Spa area is unisex.

Thermal Spa etiquette is wearing swim trunks / bathing suite.

We visited the Thermal area several times during a cruise on MSC Seashore this month. The Thermal Spa was at no time (sea day or docked) crowded. I guess they control the capacity by number of lockers in the changing rooms.

We never booked Thermal Spa access on all of our cruises with MSC.

Kids ? Thermal Spa has age restriction of 18+ .

SIRWOLF - The original question from Aussie Jeep was whether or not reservations were necessary to enter the Thermal Suite. MNPurple then commented that indeed reservations WERE necessary on their last cruise on Seaview in May 2022.

I think most people would assume that means they are restricting the total number of attendees at any given time. Once you are inside, you could surely go wherever you like. The last time I was in the Thermal Area on Seaside, there were never more than 15 people grand total in the entire suite. And I was wearing a thong. Less is more! Who wants to wear board shorts when they are sweating it all out?

You are correct that the Thermal Area is adults only: 18+ --- perhaps the author was suggesting that his "kids" are in fact grown up... the same as my father's kids are in their 40s!

In "normal times" the capacity is controlled by a limited number of passes sold, in combination with those included free in the Aurea class or Yacht Club. In "covid times" it sounds like some ships on some voyages require reservations to enter and enjoy.

I, for one, am excited to sail on on MSC, in the Yacht Club once again, and spend a LOT of time in the Thermal Area!

OP asked if steam/sauna rooms needed to be booked. My respond is.. “No” , you can not book a sauna or steam room for a group of people.

There were no reservations needed for Thermal Spa on our last 3 MSC cruises:

July 2022 ~ MSC Seashore ~ Caribbean

December 2021 ~ MSC Seashore ~ Caribbean

October 2021 ~ MSC Meraviglia ~ Caribbean

I have no recent information on Thermal Spa on MSC Seaside, Seaview, Splendida and Magnifica. We sailed on MSC Seaview in pre-covid era.

Thank you everyone for your replies. Now I have a further question.  With the Steam Room or Sauna can anyone on board access these or do they need to have a spa pass  Thanks

AUSSIE - The Thermal Area is only open to those who have purchased a pass, or to guests staying in the Aurea Suites or Yacht Club. (The pass is included for those two cabin levels.) On my last cruise, I stayed in Yacht Club and visited the Thermal Area at least twice a day!

If it might jump on, you still get a "1 hour" (no one is timing) thermal pass with Diamond Level Voyager's Club so this group qualifies, too 🙂

I guess I'll clarify, like I said we were going to the Thermal spa, which includes steam rooms and saunas, etc.  We were in YC on the Seaview in the Med, so it was one of our benefits.  When I referred to my kids, they are all adult age. Even though it makes me a bit sad and feel a little old to say that!

I made an assumption the OP was referring to the thermal spa, if there are other areas with saunas/steam rooms, I cannot comment on that.

RICHARD@SEA

On the Mera there was a sauna in the mens locker room of the  gym area ... can be used anytime by anyone - I went almost every day & there was never more than one or two other men in there.

The locker room had plenty of towels etc & the ability to shower & return to the sauna was a plus without having to put clothing on. It was a longer cruise 17 days & mostly Europeans most just wore a towel or were nnude.

Perhaps on the ship you'll be on will have this option for you AUSSIE!!!

Thanks

PS - I too usually went late afternoon / pre cocktail, dinner...great!!!

HIPHIP - Good to know about the 1 hour free Thermal Area pass with Diamond level!

RICHARD - Thank you for the reminder about the free same-sex sauna in the gym locker room area on Meraviglia. That reminds me, there is a post on these boards with a link to a spreadsheet that anybody can update. It shows a list of all known cruise ships and what sauna and steam room amenities they offer. You can  read the original posts using the box below, or view spreadsheet in full at  https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ROCmeNSYj_VwCYs3IUjWbrcEomFeqOrvIDUnXG6GLTg/edit#gid=836403675

Thank you again for the great information.  we are diamond class so that is good news on the hour benefit. We are doing the Egypt to Italy on the Splendida in April 2023 then straight to the Magnifica to the Trans Atlantic, Italy to Miami.  Any specific information on these ships.  On the Magnifica we have one of the two balcony cabins on the Aurea deck that are not Aurea cabins and on the Splendida we have a balcony on deck 10. With the Magnifica we are very near the Spa.  Any information on these ships would be much appreciated.

does anyone know if days passes are sold on board for the thermal area?  asking specifically for Meraviglia.  looks like i can book a pass for my upcoming 7 day cruise for $130 (which seems reasonable), but prefer to try before i buy!

Sometimes day passes are available, sometimes not. During COVID hard times no day or week passes at all on board, only pre booked. If that has changed now, I don´t know.

I don´t remember the price of the day or week passes on board, just remember that they are much more expensive than in advance.

From the videos I've seen it looks wonderful and if it's half as nice as Seaside, I'm thrilled. Already booked for Meraviglia for May and extremely excited about the Thermal Area!

Thanks all. Excited to go visit. Glad there is sauna in men's dressing room. I plan on being nude then. I guess I need trunks for the ice room.

We were on the Seascape a couple of weeks ago.  The thermal area includes the steam rooms, saunas, salt room and the snow room along with a hyrdotherapy pool inside and a hot tub outside off the spa.  The Thermal area is unisex with separate men and women changing rooms.  Anyone in the YC, Aurea experience cabin and with a thermal pass can use the area.  You must use the facilities with a bathing suit.  Reservation is not required but recommended especially for those with a thermal pass. On day one, I reserved time every morning at 9:00 am and 5:30 pm on the 2 sea days.  I loved it. On one of the days, I went early and there was not a problem at all. It helps to reserve so that they determine how full the thermal area is.

It's more expensive onboard. Daily pass onboard is $80
