Experience level

Sardinia is both wild and imbued with the trappings of the rich and famous, quiet yet boisterous, subdued yet exciting as its seemingly opposite personalities join to create an adventure under sail. A sojourn ashore at the chic and sophisticated resort harbors of Porto Cervo and Porto Rotondo on Sardinia’s Emerald Coast ushers sailors into the heart of one of Europe’s most exclusive vacation destinations. Modern marinas and resort amenities are of the first order.

The Maddalena Islands reveal the Old World side of Sardinia. The rocky cliffs and craggy heights of the coast, the wind-swept beaches of the islands, the secluded bays and coves, it’s as if the passage of time stopped in the 19th century. This is as a Sardinia yacht charter should be – stimulating and indulging, a balm to the spirit difficult to find anywhere else.

Sailing a Yacht in Sardinia

Situated at the northwestern edge of the Tyrrhenian Sea, an arm of the Mediterranean that spans 475 miles in length and 60 miles in width, The Moorings marina in Cannigione is a prime location for the start of a Sardinia yacht charter .

Sardinia has a very pleasant 6 month Summer, hot and dry from May to October. You’ll likely experience calm winds from the northwest which average between 8 and 12 knots, though they are often stronger in the Strait of Bonifacio between Sardinia and Corsica. The winter months are mild with a good amount of sunshine, particularly in March and April when the flowers are in blossom.

Sailing conditions are very similar to Sicily and Procida which means a Sardinia yacht charter is a great place to set sail if you have basic skills in coastal navigation. Take a look at our sailing requirements for Italy yacht charters for more information about expected skills and experience.

Why charter a yacht in Sardinia?

A Sardinia sailing vacation unfolds in a wondrous part of the Mediterranean .

Both the archipelago and the main islands are enchanting cruising grounds regardless of the length of your Sardinia itinerary. They blend the boutique shopping, fine dining, and lively nightlife of chic ports such as Porto Cervo and Porto Rotondo with the quiet and scenic beauty of the largely uninhabited Maddalena Islands. Most of all the sailing in these waters is splendid, with good winds an almost everyday occurrence.

Sardinia’s clear waters, rocky coastline and islands offer great scuba diving for the novice through to the seasoned diver. Alghero, on the North West coast is a good base for year round diving in deep sea with many caverns to explore. Diving in warm waters of the Mediterranean during a vacation is definitely the way to have a go! Dive equipment contact information can be requested through the base in the event the client would like to pre-book their scuba diving excursion.

Aside from its incredible scenery, stunning waters and fantastic diving opportunities, Sardinia is also the place to be if you love history! It’s one of the most unique islands in Italy as it’s been populated since the neolithic era so is home to a blend of interesting architecture, archaeological sites and historical landmarks! Many people have questioned whether Sardinia was home to the lost city of Atlantis, a legend created by Plato, a Greek Philosopher from Athens . While this is unlikely to be true, you can make your own mind up as you explore this hidden gem of an island.

Whether you’re a sailor looking for brilliant sailing grounds, a couple wanting to vacation in a beautifully romantic setting or a family who love scuba diving, Sardinia is the perfect place for a yacht charter!

Cannigione Yacht Charter – 7 Day Itinerary

Our Sardinia sailing itinerary takes you to Italy ’s stunningly beautiful Maddalena Archipelago National Park and Marine Reserve and the world-famous Emerald Coast, well known for its superb beaches and myriad of coves and bays.

On longer cruises you can sail northward to the island of Corsica, France, or transit the Strait of Bonifacio and head south down the northwestern side of the island of Sardinia, where it’s a little less expensive than on the Emerald Coast and much more laid-back. Typically, though, sailors focus on the exquisite cruising in the Maddalena Islands and the bays and harbors of Sardinia’s Emerald Coast, with upscale Porto Cervo and Porto Rotondo as the centerpiece.

The Tyrrhenian Sea has so many incredible wonders to discover, with many islands being very easy to get to. From Sardinia. A short sail north from Sardinia is the Maddalena Archipelago National Park and Marine Reserve, comprised of seven main islands:

  • Santo Stefano
  • Santa Maria

Across the Strait of Bonifacio in Corsica, France, which is also very easy to get to!

The duration of your Sardinian adventure entirely depends on how much exploring and sightseeing you plan on doing. Whether you spend a week in Sardinia before exploring other parts of Italy, or you take a couple of weeks to relax and soak up the sun on some of Sardinia’s divine beaches, it’s your choice.

Our Sardinia itinerary is based on a 1-week yacht charter which gives you plenty of time to explore islands, ports, beaches, coves, archaeological sites and also relax on the golden beaches. If you follow our itinerary, you will visit:

  • Porto Cervo
  • Porto Rotondo
  • Mortorio Island
  • Caprera Island
  • Maddalena Island

Want to discover what else Italy has to offer? Take a look at our Procida itinerary and Sicily itinerary .

While you are in Sardinia take the opportunity to visit these breathtaking cultural attractions:

  • The Gulf of Arzachena, which reaches so deeply into the mainland that it seems like a fjord, ends in a sensational lagoon that is well worth the visit
  • Go scuba diving or snorkeling in the exquisite turquoise waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. In order to save you from carrying extra luggage, The Moorings provides snorkeling equipment: flippers, mask and snorkel for your use. The equipment is stored in the office. Just ask the customer service representative for the sizes needed for you and your crew. Learn more about our water sports options .
  • If you’re a fan of history, take a trip to the Temple of Antas, an ancient Carthaginian-Roman temple
  • The Nuraghe Palmavera is a fascinating archaeological site containing a cluster of large limescale structures, dating back over 3,500 years. Offering you a slice of history, you can learn all about the Nuragic civilization

Sardinia also offers numerous opportunities for fishing either inland on the countless lakes and rivers, or on the coast off the rocks and jetties. You can even see the locals catching octopi and taking them home for dinner!

Some hotels in the north of the island offer trips on The Poseidon, a 14m sport fishing boat with excellent equipment, a very comfortable cabin and sundeck. Inland near to Mandra Edera Farm is Lake Omodeo with stunning scenery and coarse fishing. There is also fishing on the lakes and lagoons that surround Oristano on the west coast. In the south there is excellent fishing at Cala Carbonara where there is an abundance of marine life.

The sailing season in Sardinia runs from April-October, with the best times to channel your inner sailor generally considered to be April-May and September-October. This is very similar to our other Mediterranean yacht charter destinations in Greece and Croatia ! Our Moorings base is closed between early-November to mid-March so if you’re looking for a Winter yacht charter, take a look at our Caribbean destinations.

Motor yacht charter vs sailing yacht charters in Sardinia

Choosing between a crewed motor yacht and a sailing yacht for your Sardinia adventure depends on your preferences, budget, and the experience you’re seeking.

Motor yachts offer several advantages that appeal to many travellers. They provide greater speed and agility, allowing you to cover more distance along Sardinia’s coastline in less time. With their luxurious amenities, spacious interiors, and onboard chefs, motor yachts offer unparalleled comfort and indulgence. Their stability in choppy waters and ease of handling make them suitable for guests who prioritize a smooth sailing experience or have limited sailing experience.

On the other hand, sailing yachts offer a more authentic and serene sailing experience. With their reliance on wind power rather than engines, sailing yachts provide a quieter and more intimate atmosphere, perfect for relaxation and enjoying the natural beauty of Sardinia’s coastline. They evoke a sense of nostalgia and romance with their classic designs and billowing sails, appealing to travelers seeking an authentic maritime adventure. Additionally, eco-conscious travellers often prefer sailing vessels due to their lower environmental impact and reliance on renewable energy.

Ultimately, choosing a motor yacht or a sailing yacht for your Sardinia adventure depends on your preferences and desired level of comfort. Both options offer their own unique advantages and can provide an unforgettable journey along the breathtaking coastline of Sardinia.

Best Yachts for Charter in Sardinia

Motor yachts for charter in sardinia, sailing yachts for charter in sardinia, sardinia yacht charter faqs, where is sardinia.

Sardinia is an island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, a part of the Mediterranean Sea, southwest of the Italian Peninsula and just south of the French island of Corsica. It is an autonomous region of Italy and boasts over 1,850 kilometers (1,150 miles) of coastline, featuring stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and dramatic cliffs. Sardinia is surrounded by smaller islands and archipelagos, such as the Maddalena Archipelago to the northeast, offering additional exploration and discovery opportunities on your own private yacht charter. These islands often have secluded beaches, hidden caves, and charming villages to explore.

Sardinia’s coastline boasts miles of superlative beaches and secret grottos only accessible by boat. Porto Cervo is at the region’s main center, home to Costa Smeralda. This area has become increasingly desirable for luxury yacht charters because of its remote location and exclusive atmosphere. South of Porto Cervo, you will find forested mountains, medieval villages, and stunning seas. Another recommended site is La Maddalena National Park, a marine reserve that offers opportunities for secluded anchorages and overnight stays. Spotted with seven main islands and many islets, La Maddalena offers crystal-clear waters for an afternoon snorkel and access to the beautiful pink sand beach named Pink of Budelli. Sardinia’s coastal cuisine differs from inland; the seafood base and pasta dishes pay homage to the sea and further contribute to the laidback yet luxurious atmosphere of the island.

When is the best time to go on a Sardinia yacht charter?

The best time to hop on a yacht and explore Sardinia is usually in the summer, from June to September. During this time, the weather is warm and sunny, perfect for soaking up the sun and diving into the crystal-clear waters. Remember that summer is popular with yacht charter guests and tourists, so planning ahead and booking early is advisable. Spring (April to May) and autumn (October to November) are great options for Charter guests who prefer fewer crowds. You’ll still get lovely weather and plenty of chances to enjoy the island’s beauty without the hustle and bustle of peak season. So, whether you’re aiming for exciting summer adventures or a more relaxed experience, there’s a perfect time for a Sardinia yacht adventure to fit your preferences.

Can I visit other destinations on a Sardinia yacht charter?

The French Riviera

Cruise along the French Riviera to visit glamorous destinations such as Saint-Tropez, Cannes, and Monaco . Enjoy world-class shopping, dining, and nightlife, and soak up the sun on the famous beaches of the Côte d’Azur.

Your Guide to Sardinia

ADVENTURE. EAT. PARTY. AND REPEAT.

yachting in sardinia charter experts

YOUR GUIDE TO SARDINIA

Blame geography. Sardinia is 500 million years old. Time has sculpted a rollercoaster topography of raging rivers, snowy mountains, hidden creeks and coral reefs. Which means world-class canyoning, climbing, kayaking and diving. Each Y.CO yacht carries the kit to support these epic Sardinian adventures. That’s important. Because your boat will be the only dive club, beach bar, sports centre and massage salon for miles around.

Isle of Adventure

Some adventures have been preserved by accident. Like Santo Stefano Island in the 60-island Maddalena Archipelago. Previously off-limits as a NATO submarine base, the surrounding sea is a Picasso palette of sunfish and rainbow wrasse. Another example is Asinara Island. This former high security Mafia prison has feral populations of horses and donkeys. And a census population of just 1. Your Y.CO Charter Specialist will arrange horse riding, free diving, wildlife spotting, open-air painting. Whatever floats your boat.

yachting in sardinia charter experts

Sail in Hungry

The Mediterranean’s second-largest island (after Sicily) grows Italy’s lemons, tomatoes and artichokes. Catches its lobsters, tuna and sea bass. And produces award-winning wines in vineyards that can be scootered, hiked and eBiked around. This diet means Sardinia hosts the world’s highest number of centenarians alongside Okinawa in Japan. Trust Y.CO for organic picnics, cooking classes and ten-course tasting menus under the stars.

REASONS TO VISIT

WHY WE LOVE SARDINIA

yachting in sardinia charter experts

Sardinia has 1.5 million residents and 4 million sheep. Islanders breakfast on Casizolu, an only-found-here mountain cheese commended by the Slow Food movement. Aperol aperitifs are paired with Fiore Sardo, a better-than-Pecorino hard cheese sourced from a single Sardinian flock. Just avoid Casu Martzu (literally 'rotten cheese'). This man-versus-food challenge has been nibbled by maggots and is considered an aphrodisiac. Yeah, right.

yachting in sardinia charter experts

600 Beaches

Cala Goloritzé is a silver swoosh of powder sand protected from casual tourists by 470m-high cliffs. The beach is so stunning it was declared an Italian National Monument in 1995. Spiaggia di Piscinas comprises 4km of Sahara sands abutting swimming pool seas. National Geographic ranked the beach as one of the best beaches in the world. And access to those beaches? Like almost everything else on Sardinia. From dive spots to desert islands, from sandy sunrise yoga to SUP safaris in a Marine Reserve, it’s yacht or nothing.

At Borrow A Boat we're on a mission to make boating more accessible and to make it easier for you to get on the water. We believe boating should be available to everyone, and we can help the boating industry, boat owners, marinas, and everyone who wants to go boating by providing a 21st-century boating marketplace. Borrow A Boat is the best place to find and rent boats of all sorts, from a canal and riverboats across Europe to a sailing yacht , motor yacht, and catamarans across North America, the Mediterranean and Caribbean and further afield, along with some of the world's most impressive superyachts and luxury yacht charters .

A smaller alternative than a superyacht charter , catamarans are the fastest growing type of charter yacht at the moment and once you've sailed on one it's easy to see why. In terms of your ideal catamaran charter think of locations like Thailand, the Ionian Islands, BVI (British Virgin Islands), Croatian Adriatic, Ibiza, French riviera and Mallorca for your sailing adventure.

Types of Catamarans Available For Rent Or Charter In Sardinia:

When searching a geographical area on Borrow A Boat you can filter by the below boat types. There is also the option to further filter your searches by price, the number of guests, cabins or bathrooms, what year the catamaran yacht was launched, the boat length and the boat manufacturer.

Types of Catamarans Available:

Catamarans: Luxury catamarans are stable and spacious, with quick sailing performance, and and have been gaining in popularity in recent years. Better for larger groups, they have lots of room for water toys, and are big enough for a little privacy. A catamaran charter is easy and comfortable for novices not used to heeling and are loved by families due to their extra space when compared to a monohull sailing yacht . Typically far more luxurious than a sailboat the larger catamarans have en suite toilets and showers in the cabin as well as ample entertaining space in the saloon and on deck.

Power Catamaran: These motor boat are relatively new but have also been gaining in popularity as the two hulls keep the boat more stable when compared to a monohull. The wider beam also means more deck space and as they don't have sails or a mast, they have a lot more space on deck than a sailing catamaran charter or monohull. For a luxury catamaran charter, consider taking a crewed catamaran charter sailing vacation with an experienced skipper.

Catamaran Sailing Areas In Sardinia

Just to the south of French-administered Corsica and west across the Tyrrhenian Sea from Italy, Sardinia is an island nation with its own language and culture that while very Latin is independent in its own right - like many Mediterranean Sea islands, one which is fiercely independent and proud.

A Sardinia yacht charter will generally focus on northern Sardinia. Centred in Olbia, your catamaran sailing holiday will allow you to explore the stylish and popular Costa Smeralda (Emerald Coast) and the neighbouring La Maddalena archipelago that is within sight of Corsica to the north. Immediately to the northwest of the main island are the islands of the Asinara National Park where you can spend time at peace with nature, floating on a turquoise sea in secluded anchorages.

While exploring the Costa Smeralda on your sailing holiday you will be able to visit secluded coves with high wooded cliffs and find your very own beautiful beach to enjoy sometimes in solitude. A sailing trip around Sardinia is more like a French Riviera sailing holiday than one to a far off desert island! A yacht charter Sardinia is as much about the people as it is the sailing. Sardinian cuisine is like the Sardo speaking locals both of the style of the Mediterranean but unique in its own right. Expect great nightlife, Latin flair and style as you enjoy this island nation to its fullest.

Crewed Catamaran Charter or Bareboat:

When it comes to a Sardinia catamaran charter you typically have two choices - bareboat charter or crewed yacht charter.

When using Borrow A Boat you can filter all catamaran searches to be with or without skipper depending on what charter yachts you are looking for and below we cover some of the main points to consider for your catamaran hire.

Crewed catamaran: You can do a crewed or skippered boat charter in Sardinia. This form of luxury yacht charter gives you the advantage of being able to get afloat without having to invest in getting sailing qualifications beforehand. For a skippered luxury charter yacht you will pay a fixed fee for the crew and skipper as well as their food and a tip at the end.

When you get to a luxury yacht charter with crew these prices will increase and costs also depend on where you plan to sail to along with the size and type of yacht rental on your sailing holiday.

In some cases, skippers will also be the boat owner (typically day charter) which means they will know all the best - secluded beaches to show you the best that the area has to offer with their local knowledge.

For day trips you will often be able to use a skipper as well and prices will vary depending on the type of charter yacht.

Bareboat Catamaran Charter: For skilled sailors, a bareboat charter is cheaper and gives more privacy for you and your charter guests. Many sailors prefer to be helming the luxury charter yacht while choosing their own course on their sailing trip, and provided you have the knowledge and relevant qualifications you can skipper these boats yourself.

Do You Need A Licence To Charter A Catamaran In Sardinia

If you are on a crewed Sardinia catamaran charter you do not need a license to sail - you can just turn up at the marinaand go.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat yacht charter and in some countries a day skipper or ICC may not be enough for boats over 45 feet in length, you will need to check with the charter agent but here are some examples of typical sailing qualifications that will allow you to charter in most countries:

International Certificate of Competence: This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will typically be able to take a bareboat charter out of Thailand (but it is worth checking as per above), these include Day Skipper , Coastal Skipper ( *sail or motor endorsement) or Yachtmaster.

American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted but also check as per above

US Sailing: The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should i consider when hiring a catamaran.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

Do you have to pay a deposit when hiring a Catamaran in Sardinia?

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the catamaran hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

What happens if my Catamaran breaks down?

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company and they can typically send someone from the charter base

What should I think of before I hire a Catamaran in Sardinia?

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the catamaran before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool in the evenings.

What Qualifications Do I need to hire a Catamaran?

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. If you choose to have a skipper on board your catamaran you won't require licences.

Sail the exclusive Costa Smeralda

Sardinia’s strong summer winds and narrow tidal range make it a favorite destination for sailors. You’ll find numerous cup competitions and regattas here, as racing sailors are attracted to the island’s famous Costa Smeralda by the strong mistrals that stir the surface of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Located in the middle of Sardinia’s exclusive ‘Emerald Coast’, Cannigione is a small resort town offering easy access to many fabulous beaches and the popular Maddalena Archipelago.

The luxury resorts, golf courses and clean, white beaches of the Costa Smeralda attract the jet-set crowd, and you can spot many famous faces in Cannigione and beyond. If you tire of rubbing shoulders with millionaires and celebrities, then Cannigione is the perfect jumping off point from which to explore Sardinia, the Maddalena Archipelago and Corsica beyond. Sardinia’s craggy coastline provides dozens of natural inlets, secluded beaches and private anchorages where you can forget your troubles, drop anchor for the day and swim the warm, inviting waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Sardinia is globally renowned for its food, and there are many excellent restaurants dotted along the coast, including several with prestigious Michelin stars. As you’d expect, Sardinian cuisine is rich in seafood such as langoustines, rock lobster and tuna, as well as wild boar, suckling pig, cheeses and the region’s distinct saffron-infused pasta.

Sardinia

Inspiring Itineraries

Sardinia offers a variety of sailing and on-land experiences, though the beaches are known for the stunning contrast between soft white sand, vibrant turquoise oceans and lush greenery which appears atop a ragged stone coastline.

There are many options for a Sardinia yacht charter around this special island, below we have summarised some of our favourite locations – depending on your desired holiday type.

For Families

The Maddalena Archipelago nearby provides opportunities for exploration, and the resorts in the area cater well to families. There is a plethora of exquisite, sandy beaches (such as Spiaggia Bassa Trinità and Isola Di Spargi) for young children to explore, as well as snorkelling and diving for families with older children. The rugged coastline and boulders which jut out from the edge of the beaches, also provide a wonderful beginner experience for young children wanting to snorkel close to the shoreline.

For Couples

Cala Lunga, on the small archipelago of Razzoli, is an uninhabited island with pink-toned granite and the ivory sand claims most of the beach stretch, save for a small patch of beach which hails deep saffron sands. You can moor here (and this beach is included in our week flotilla itinerary ) and go off to explore the even more remote and quaint beaches on the isle – if you’re up for a bit of walking!

If you opt for 10 day+ Sardinia sailing holiday, we highly recommend sailing around the the west of Sardinia, to Alghero, which is renowned for its romantic atmosphere, historic charm and remarkable sunsets, sailing around the north to this location will also give you the opportunity to see this beautiful coastline and its stunning sea caves – for romance at sea, plan your own itinerary with one of our holiday planners. .

For First-Time Sailors

Our Sardinian Charter options all start from Cannigione, with our Sardinia and Corsica Flotilla heading north and our Bareboat itinerary staying close to the Costa Smeralda (north east coast), which is a beautiful sail for those who have never visited Sardinia before.

All of our Sardinian yacht charters require at least at least 10 days or 200 miles as skipper on an equivalent size yacht.

If you wish to experience a sailing holiday in Sardinia without these qualifications, you can always h ire a skipper – they will take care of the boat and you, if you have more information check out our skipper FAQ page or speak to your holiday planner .

For Large Groups

Olbia is where the island’s main airport is located, just down from our base at Cannigione, Olbia is a buzzing coastal city with spectacular architecture- including museums containing Roman Artefacts and Mediaeval squares. It also has considerable nightlife – with bustling bars, clubs and beaches, which come alive with events and concerts in the evening perfect for large groups on a sailing holiday.

Sardinia, with its archipelago islands scattered off the northeastern coast, many of these lands uninhabited and pristine- larger neighbouring islands (Corsica and Sicily), and blend of cultures (thanks to its location, off the coast of Italy, close to North Africa, hugged by both the Tyrrhenian and Mediterranean Sea.

There is no shortage of things to do whilst chartering a yacht around this isle, but we have summarised our top picks for you, depending on what your focus is on your trip.

The northeast of Sardinia is a favourite for many wellness guru’s and those looking for a mindful holiday. Our one week itineraries all focus on exploring the beauty and calm of this area and even the more glamorous and more built-up marina areas on these routes (such as Marina dell’Orso, Poltu Quatu and Porto Cervo) have a slow, laziness about them, which makes even hours of quiet exploration feel truly therapeutic.

If you want to spend time lounging on deck, soaking in the Italian sun for a famous tan, we would recommend trying one of our catamarans , as they offer more deck space for lounging.

If you’re after beautiful hikes which climb up trails intertwined with ancient archaeological sites and views of the ocean, the Arcipelago La Maddalena is perfect, a national park in itself, this small isle offers lush greenery amongst stone paths and nature.

There are a variety of routes , some more suitable for beginners and others that are more challenging (please consider the time of year & temperatures before setting off on these treks, and bring appropriate footwear).

Eating and Drinking

Sardinia is known for its seafood restaurants and fresh pasta dishes, narrowing our favourites down has been a challenge but, here are our top spots, for different atmospheres:

  • Deste, Cannigione – for Michelin star meals and view of the ocean at night that is hard to beat.
  • Trattoria Romana da Mario, Olbia – for authentic Sardinian cuisine and a cosy atmosphere.
  • Il Pomodoro, Arzachena (in-land from Cannigoine, and a perfect location for an excursion day exploring the city). Perfect for anyone after a warm atmosphere, friendly staff, an expert wine selection and flavourful, freshly cooked dishes.
  • Renato Pedrinelli Restaurant, Porto Cervo – a tripadvisor’s favourite (travellers choice awards 2023) and we can see why, reasonably priced, this restaurant offers outdoor dining in a patio surrounded by flowers, a magical experience. We recommend their seafood spaghetti!
  • Taverna Baro , La Maddalena – a stunning view of the harbour, platters of meats, cheeses and platters, cocktails, wines and IPA’s, fresh sandwiches and outdoor/indoor seating options? The perfect lunchtime and early evening spot all for a very affordable price point.

Underwater Adventures

Cala Lazarine on the small northern Archipelago of Lavezzi has pristine water and thriving underwater ecosystems, the diverse underwater landscapes here provide stunning clarity and thanks to the protected marine reserves, these dives offer the chance for divers to see some beautiful fish, eels, underwater caves and coral reefs.

Our planned Sardinia flotilla itinerary stops at Cala Lazarina, Lavezzi and gives the opportunity to meet like-minded sailors who may also wish to do these excursions with you (or, go off and explore with a local tour group).

History and Culture

Fortezza di Monte Altura, or, Mount Altura Fortress, is built into the rockside, offers historical tours which guides will dive into the history of the Fortress and the Battles it has survived. Just outside of Palau, this is one of our favourite historical spots in the north of Sardinia. It is also family friendly and will take less than 3 hours to thoroughly explore – giving you the rest of the day to relax or hunt down any local sites.

We recommend visiting Sardinia between May and June – as the temperatures increase to at least 24°C  but avoid getting above 30°C.

During peak season, July and August, average temperatures can rise above 30°C before mellowing back down through September. Our Sardinia base is open April – November. For more details, check out our Important Information page.

Sardinia offers excellent sailing conditions through the summer months – with a lot of sunshine and very little rain or storms.

The North and East of the island has the most consistent stream of west-northwest winds (averaging around 10 knots). However, due to strong winds and wave confusion, it is not recommended for inexperienced sailors.   For more information, go to our Sardinia Sailing Conditions page.

Our yacht charters in Sardinia start at £1,260 but, as with anything, the price points can absolutely vary – depending on time of year, charter type and time at sea.  This does not include flights to Olbia and travel from the airport to our base or daily spending – however, Costa Smeralda is the perfect location for a holiday enjoying natural beauty and good food – so unless you have any big excursions planned, the main thing to budget for will be dining (unlike, Thailand or Caribbean which offer a plethora of thrilling activities and more excursions to keep you busy).

The mooring fees range from 4-7 EURO per meter per day, depending on the season and boat length.

Buoys will cost approximately EUR 50 per night and are to be paid locally at each anchorage.  Marina fees start at approximately EUR 40 per night and can be as much as EUR 1600 per night. Find out more, here .

The Reviews:

  • Hi Reia, I always was a sailor! And now.... wife and kids may have become sailors too... It was great. The boat is incredible. And the crew was great. Everything went as well as it could - we could not go around the island because the sea and wind were too harsh on the western side, but we were happy nevertheless. I was quite generous on the tip.... but it was well deserved.
  • Nicolas, MY WAY is a great charter overall and I would certainly return on it. Great crew, chef and captain. Boat in very good condition, large tender, service and stewardess. I am very happy. Thanks again.
  • Hi Sally, the holiday was lovely and we all had a great time. Francesco's cooking was sensational and he was really lovely with the kids. The itinerary was well planned and as expected and he was thoughtful in making adjustments once he had learnt what we liked to do. He also accommodated the change in weather sensibly and kept us in the loop. Melissa chose us some fantastic wine (we under ordered as expected!), her baking is delicious, her table settings really lovely and thoughtful, her attention to our drinks and snacks impeccable and the boat was always spotless.
  • Amanda, we could not have asked for a more wonderful experience than we had on BERZINC.  The boat and its crew were fabulous from start to finish.  Captain Mika was most accommodating, consistently finding us the best spots around both Corsica and Sardinia. Chef Harry impressed us with every meal, the food could not have been more delicious! Arnold, Jeff, Taylor, Janice & Angel were all spectacular, catering to our every need.  Marna kept everything running perfectly! We will cherish our memories from our 10 nights on the BERZINC forever, and we hope to return for another voyage soon. Thanks Again.
  • Amanda Hello!!! Everything was great!!! There are no words!!!!!!!! Completely amazed by the Zamolxis and its crew!!! Everything was at another level!! Thanks for all your attentions all over these months!! It was a pleasure to work with you!!! You are number one!!! The itinerary was perfect, food was awesome! Best regards.
  • Hi Amanda. Thank you for following up on us. Sorry I didn’t respond earlier. We truly had an amazing time at the Aramis. The crew was fantastic. No complaints what so ever. The Aramis is very well kept and feels new. Francesco is very knowledgeable and responsible. Francesca’s cooking is delicious. We felt very well taken care of and safe. Thank you for recommending us to go with the Aramis. Looking forward to our new chartering experience and will of course knock on your door then. Will be sending you some family and friends as clients.
  • All was perfect, especially with such a nice, competent, diligent and young team with Captain Darren. We had a fantastic week and would recommend highly Lir and her team. S/Y LIR / Sardinia / Aug 7 - 14,
  • Hi Trina, Everything outstanding, the trip was just perfect. The yacht was really good and the crew was fantastic. Many thanks for your good services as well. M/Y XO OF THE SEAS/ Sardinia / July

Learn everything you need to know about a sardinia yacht charter.

On a Sardinia  yacht charter , you can discover that Sardinia is an island with an amazing coastline, puzzling history and heritage, exceptional cuisine and wine. Sardinia captivates with its wild interior, dazzling beaches, and endearing eccentricities.

The sand has that beautiful white colour that you can mostly find in the Caribbean and the sea is the bluest blue. Costa Smeralda with its scalloped bays is the ideal place to drop anchor and swim in the crystal clear emerald waters. Play castaway on the Golfo di Orosei’s coves, where sheer cliffs ensure seclusion or sail to La Maddalena’s cluster of granite islands. The island is also a culinary paradise, with great varieties of pasta, bread and dolci ,  its own wines (Vermentino whites, Cannonau reds) and cheeses.

OceanBLUE Yachts Ltd

Crewed & Bareboat Yacht Charter

Chartering in sardinia.

Yacht charter in Sardinia - An island with one of Europe's most stunning coastlines; it's waters teem with fish; it's golden sands disappear into oceans of blue; it's rugged mountains are covered with flocks of sheep producing cheese so pungent, your palate will never forget.

Sardinia is completely unique and the perfect place for a yacht charter holiday that mixes excitement with the exotic. During the summer, yachts flock to Sardinia. With an average of 300 days of sunshine per year, concentrated from April to September and warm winds off the African continent, the Sardinian climate, can be quite delightful and not quite as hot as other yacht charter areas in the Mediterranean.

You'll find, despite their weird and wonderful ways, that the Sardinian ports compete rather well with the Mediterraneans other chic hot spots. Summers tend to attract lovely warm days and crowds of millionaires, supermodels and luxury yachts, especially to the prestigious Yacht Club Costa Smeralda at Porto Cervo, near Olbia.

For the bareboat charterer though, whose interests are a little more adventurous, Sardinia's humble bays and ports, will allow you to explore some sheer and stunning terrain. A good start is the Grotte di Nettuno (Neptunes Caves) on the beautiful Capocaccia to the north. .

As with other parts of the Mediterranean and Italy, the chartering season generally runs from April to the end of October. The summer season in July and August is the hottest and tends to have lighter winds.

This spectacular and unrivalled island presents a variety of shapes. In fact Sardinia is a surprising blend of "diversities" originated from its complex natural, historical and cultural richness, as it has been, since the most ancient ages, a meeting point for the various cultures of the populations which have landed on and colonized its coasts. In the northern part of the island, between Alghero and Olbia you'll find a rich coastline alternating beaches and bays while the landscape is predominantly rocky. A fantastic journey along the northern irregular coasts of Sardinia, where nature has been wonderfully moulded by a civilization, the roots of which stretch back at the time of the first inhabitants of the Mediterranean. Facing Palau is the Archipelago of La Maddalena, unquestionable natural attraction of extraordinary beauty, from where, reaching its highest point, Guardia Vecchia, you'll be able to enjoy a view of all the islands of the archipelago, sweeping all the way to Corsica .

In the short stretch of sea of the Bocche di Bonifacio dividing Sardinia from Corsica, many islands, of all sizes, rise from the waters, forming the Archipelago of La Maddalena considered one of nature's authentic masterpieces. They're grouped in the eastern (Santo Stefano, La Maddalena, Caprera, with the small islands of Monaci, Sperduti di Caprera, Pecora, Porco, Delle Bisce, Chiesa, Della Paura, Cappuccini) and the western ones (Spargi, Budelli, Razzoli, Santa Maria with the little islands of Spargiotto, Spargiottello, Barrettini, Barrettinelli, Corcelli, La Presa, Paduleddi). The archipelago is characterized by various forms of granite, moulded by the wind and rain: the phenomenon of the "tafoni", big round rocks with fantastic shapes, entirely excavated by the crumbling of the rock from within. One of the most renowned is the one at Capo d'Orso on the coast in the vicinities of Palau.

La Maddalena, is the most extended island and is mostly levelled. Along the southern coast lies the city of La Maddalena, delimited in the western part by the cape of Punta Tegge and in the eastern part by the ample bay of Cala Camicia and Punta Moneta; facing this bay, at a distance of 500 meters, is the isalnd of Santo Stefano. The natural environment is still wild and its coasts shelter small beaches overlooking fabulous waters. Going north, the coastline forms the coves of Spalmatore and Porto Massimo, then the cape of Marginetto with Point Marginetto, the most northern of La Maddalena. The coast goes back down south-west, forming, with the peninsula of Abbatoggia, the deep gulf of Monti di Rena; the granite, here, is finely levigated by the violent west wind forms vast sandy dunes. You'll find the same phenomenon going just a little further south, past Punta Abbatoggia and past the little island with the same name, in the area of Spiaggia Bassa or Trinit where the sandy landscape is even more fascinating, with its dunes of very fine white sand. The coastline continues with the steep massif of Guardia Majore, penetrating just a little further in the bay of cala Inferno, rocky and irregular; from there it goes back up west and then turnes definitely south with Punta Testiccioli. The whole area is one of the most inaccessible and the granite is marked by the sea's fury and by the strong north winds. A good refuge is Cala Francese, just a little further south, overlooked by a large granite quarry.

Caprera,This island is smaller than la Maddalena but its total coastline is longer, 45,5 km, because of th long and narrow cape of granite that stretches all the way to Punta Rossa, seat of a Navy Military base since 1887. The extreme southern coast of Caprera is a morphologically very frail and unsteady area; a profound opening of the sea forms the marvellous Porto Palma. The entire eastern coast of Caprera and also the northern one, are formed by striking cliffs of granite, almost totally unaccessible, so evocative and beautiful, formed by the more steep side of the long massif of Mount Teialone.

The island of Asinara situated in the north-western part of Sardinia has an extension of 5.200 ha., while the sea's surface extension is 21.000 ha. The coastline is 110 km.long. It belongs to the Government and is part of the territory of the town of Porto Torres. The island is 17,5 km. long and its maximum width is 6,14 km. The western part is characterized by high schistose falaises, steep rocky slopes with numerous landslides and ravines, large canals and crevices, while in the eastern part you'll find wide bays and small beaches with the tipical rough sand of the granite morphology with ample rocky outcrops. This island is famous for its unique landscape and for the environmental beauties, but also and mostly for the rich wildlife: many are the species living on the island, some are very rare and, unfortunately threatened with extinction.

The southern part of Corsica is separated form Sardinia by the legendary Bocche di Bonifacio, a short strait, only few miles long. The coast, together with the turqoise and transparent sea, with the immense granite peaks, with the vast woods, the uplands and limestone slopes, form one of the most astonishing region of the island. Bonifacio marks the southern extremity of Corsica. A mediterrenean city located in a tortuous area, with its antique districts lying on top of white cliffs falling vertically to the sea and its port: a gully, deep cove with steep rocky faces, which separate it, almost completely, from dry land. Bonifacio is a tourist center most popular among the more exigent visitors. Portovecchio is an antique Genoese citadel close to the famous beaches and to some minor little islands such as Lavezzi and Cavallo.

5 New Options for Mediterranean Yacht Charter

  • By Yachting Staff
  • July 25, 2024

213-foot Benetti Zazou

Five notable yachts just became available for charter in the West Mediterranean, with plenty of time left to book itineraries before the current season is over.

First up is Zazou , a 213-foot Benetti that launched in 2021. It’s new to the charter fleet at Y.CO, with plans to base in the South of France and Corsica. This is the first time that Zazou is being opened for charters, with availability beginning mid-August.

“Ideal for families, she is elegant and sophisticated thanks to her stunning interior,” Sioned Williams of Y.CO Charter Management stated in a press release. Notable features include a gymnasium, treatment room, outdoor cinema and beach club. Accommodations are for 10 guests in five staterooms.

2024 B.Now 50m Oasis

Y.CO also just welcomed the new-for-2024 Benetti Dyna to the charter fleet in the Mediterranean. Dates are available in September and October.

Accommodations aboard Dyna are for 12 guests in six staterooms. Amenities include a main-deck pool, a cinema, a spa and a master stateroom with a private balcony.

“ Dyna is a particularly fine example of the B.Now 50m Oasis model,” Yasmine Naitijja of Y.CO Charter Management stated in a press release. “No expense has been spared in the finishes throughout. The spa area is a real onboard highlight, as is the large main-deck pool, while the stylish Novamarine Black Shiver chase boat offers enhanced exploration.”

Azimut Magellano 30

Also now available in the West Mediterranean is Alma III , a 97-foot Azimut that was just delivered to the owners from the shipyard in June. It’s part of the Fraser charter fleet and will have availability in August from Sardinia.

According to the Fraser team, Alma III is the only Azimut Magellano 30 currently on the charter market. Exterior design is by Ken Freivokh, and accommodations are for 10 guests in five staterooms. The master is full beam on the main deck.

82-foot Maiora El Pecado

In the IYC charter fleet in Greece, guests can book the 82-foot Maiora El Pecado , which became available earlier this summer. The yacht is a 2014 build that IYC’s team says is in “impeccable condition” with accommodations for as many as nine guests in four staterooms.

Notable features and equipment on El Pecado include low fuel consumption and at-anchor stabilizers for guest comfort.

107-foot Custom Line

Also in Greece with IYC is the 107-foot Custom Line My Mistake , a 2023 build that accommodates 10 guests in five staterooms. The IYC team notes that this yacht has a child-friendly setup, meaning it is a good choice for bookings with families.

Top speed aboard My Mistake is reportedly 26 knots, which should make short work of cruising between the Greek Isles while leaving more time for fun at anchor and in harbors.

When does the Mediterranean yacht-charter season end? The high season is over at the end of August, but with nice weather, the cruising in some parts of the region can be terrific well into October.

Sardinia Climate & Weather Averages

By using our extensive climate guides for each charter region throughout the world, you can explore in-depth weather information for each month and work out which time will suit your individual needs.

For example, the sea temperature will largely affect how much time you intend on spending in the water trying out your superyacht toys so watersports will want to make sure they travel during the warmest periods.
