The Resurrection of American Magic

A dramatic crash left a hole in the hull of a high-tech America’s Cup yacht. A round-the-clock repair effort has brought the boat back from the dead.

AUCKLAND, New Zealand — The oblong object, 75 feet long with a pointed nose, looks more like a downed spacecraft than a sleek racing yacht.

Hoisted in the air and surrounded by scaffolding, the object’s two appendages stick out and run down its sides like the long, slender legs of a praying mantis. But this is not a spaceship, or even an oversize insect: It is Patriot, the yacht of a team, American Magic , that hopes to reclaim the America’s Cup , sailing’s most prestigious trophy, for the United States.

And Patriot has a big problem.

On Jan. 17, while American Magic was leading a race against an Italian challenger in the Prada Cup, the series that determines who will challenge Team New Zealand for the America’s Cup in March, Patriot capsized in dramatic fashion — effectively pulling a wheelie as it rode out of the water and then rolling over on its left side.

The accident tore a hole in Patriot’s hull, sent crew members scrambling to cut teammates out of their safety harnesses and left its entire syndicate preparing to watch the multimillion-dollar boat sink into the waters of New Zealand’s Hauraki Gulf.

Instead, a crash that could have been deadly — American Magic’s skipper and executive director, Terry Hutchinson, and several crew members were briefly trapped under the fallen sail as the boat filled with water — was merely catastrophic, at least in the racing sense.

Less than a week later, on a quiet Sunday morning, three boatbuilders sanded over a giant patch that now covers the hole in Patriot’s hull. Another, with an arm full of cables, walked up the scaffolding stairs to continue the rebuilding of a sophisticated electrical system that seems more suited to a Formula One car than a sailboat.

By then, American Magic was only partway through its extensive repairs, part of a frantic effort to save Patriot, and its team’s hopes of victory, even as the competition continued without the U.S. boat. Other teams offered expertise and sent pizza. Fans topped up the team’s coffee tab at a local cafe. And about 70 boatbuilders, engineers and mechatronics technicians on the team worked in shifts to complete the work.

The repairs could easily have taken weeks without a deadline, Hutchinson said. Instead, they were completed in 11 days. On Wednesday, Patriot’s sleek hull slipped back into the water for the first time. On Friday, it was racing again.

After forfeiting four round-robin series races, the American Magic team entered this weekend’s Prada Cup semifinals against Italy’s Luna Rossa as a major underdog, and promptly lost the first two races . The first to collect four wins will face a British entry, Ineos Team UK, for the right to race the Kiwis, who claimed the America’s Cup in Bermuda four years ago.

“We can’t be broken, and so as long as we stay committed to that, which we will, then this is a clear demonstration of that and the sky is the limit,” Hutchinson said of the round-the-clock effort to bring Patriot back from the dead.

Patriot’s capsize came in the final race of the day, as American Magic led Luna Rossa out of the final turn. The wind speed suddenly increased and shifted direction, sending Patriot airborne at about 45 knots, more than 50 miles per hour.

The boat crashed down on its left side, gashing the hull. None of the 11 crew members were injured, but the damage — discovered after a chase boat scooped a piece of Patriot’s carbon hull out of the water — was substantial.

“It was a very extreme circumstance that no one can ever really be prepared for, that big a hole in the boat,” said Casey Smith, who oversees Patriot’s hydraulic system.

Flotation devices were used to keep the boat from sinking as it filled with water. Plans were discussed, revised, discarded. Nothing worked, Smith said, until a police officer “came out of nowhere” with a 40-foot-long rectangle raft that the crew wrapped around Patriot’s hull and inflated.

“That was the first time I thought, ‘OK, we’re actually going to save this thing,’” Smith said.

To understand the job that lay ahead for American Magic once it was saved, it helps to first understand the boat. The class of boats that race in the America’s Cup, AC75, is a new model that each entry was required to build and race in this year’s competition. The boats don’t just sail, they fly — provided they can reach speeds over 15 knots. Once a yacht’s hull rises out of the water, all that touches the surface are the boat’s two hydrofoils — those mechanical, praying mantis-like legs — and an equally thin rudder.

Even the terminology used around the boats has changed, to phrases more commonly associated with flying. “The pitch, nose up, nose down — they use exactly the same terminology in sailing now,” said Mark Orams, a professor of sport and recreation at the Auckland University of Technology. There is also now a crew position called a flight controller, responsible for stabilizing the boat while it is out of the water.

“You can go really, really fast,” Orams said of the new generation of racing yachts, “but you are going to be at a high risk of crashing.”

While an AC75 won’t go anywhere unless there is wind, all of its instruments and functions, like moving the hydrofoils in and out of the water, need power. Hydraulic power that moves or trims the sails comes from about eight crew members called grinders, who furiously pump hand-turned levers during the race. A lithium battery powers everything else.

That power system, along with other major controls, was destroyed by saltwater when Patriot capsized. The team had spares for all of the major components, and it harvested pieces from Defiance, the prototype for Patriot, to make some repairs. The team had to improvise with many yards of connecting cables, said Sean Healey, who worked on Patriot’s electronic rebuild.

Any changes to the boat, including different cables or the patch for the hole, put Patriot in danger of going over the competition’s strict weight rules. To race, the boat must be within 33 pounds of 14,374 pounds, according to Silvio Arrivabene, the team’s design production manager.

Another hurdle facing American Magic was undiscovered bugs in Patriot’s newly rebuilt electronic systems. The tight repair schedule left only a 36-hour buffer for delays, testing, identifying and fixing bugs, and one or two practice rounds. On Wednesday, an issue with a tripping battery that briefly cut power to the boat was resolved out on the water during the boat’s first post-capsize sail. “Unfortunately, we’d like weeks to shake all these problems out,” Healey said. “We just don’t have weeks.”

Still, less than two weeks after capsizing and about 48 hours before the first Prada Cup race against Italy, Patriot headed back into the water. “We were holding our breath for the first five minutes,” Arrivabene said of that morning’s weigh-in, “but she is good.”

On its return, its patch was decorated with a message of gratitude to American Magic’s competitors: bandage-shaped graphics bearing their flags and the words “Thank you.”

All three of the other teams had come to the aid of a sinking Patriot — a break from the famously bitter and litigious culture of the America’s Cup, and Team New Zealand released some of its boat builders to create the replacement hull section at one of its local facilities.

Out on Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour, Patriot got a tow for a running start to get the boat up on its hydrofoils, standard for a low-wind practice day. Soon, the rope fell away and Patriot was flying on its own. The yacht teetered in the air on one foil, then both, and then the other as it wove through the water, hitting over 30 knots.

“She picked up right where she left off — going fast,” Hutchinson said.

New York Yacht Club American Magic returns to Pensacola Bay with hopes of a permanent base

america's cup yacht magic

Over the next several months, anyone looking out over the waters of Pensacola Bay may get a glimpse of the 75-foot sailboat Patriot flying over the water at speeds of more than 50 mph.

New York Yacht Club American Magic is back in Pensacola for another winter, and the team is looking to make Pensacola a permanent winter training location.

Terry Hutchinson, skipper and president of sailing operations for American Magic, told the News Journal that the team hopes to have a permanent brick-and-mortar facility at the Port of Pensacola in the coming years.

Port plans: Port of Pensacola seeks $53 million from Triumph Gulf Coast to upgrade and redevelop port

"Our goal has to be when we get done with (the America's Cup) in 2024, we're coming back to the American Magic High-Performance Training Center or the American Magic America's Cup base here in Pensacola, Florida," Hutchinson said. "So, we have a place to return to, we have a place that we can go straight back into our training facility and pick up right where we left off, win, lose or draw."

The America's Cup is one of the most prestigious sailing race events in the world and features boats that are on the cutting edge of sailing technology.

The 37th America's Cup is set to take place in Barcelona, Spain, in 2024 between the defending team Emirates Team New Zealand, and four other teams: INEOS Britannia of the United Kingdom, Alinghi Red Bull Racing of Switzerland, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team of Italy and American Magic of the U.S.

American Magic expects to train in Pensacola up until next summer, when it will move its operations to Spain to prepare for the America's Cup there.

Hutchinson said the competition is best described to people who may not be familiar with sailing as Formula 1 racing on the water.

"One thing that's unique about the America's Cup is that the competition itself is incredibly difficult to win," Hutchinson said. "A lot of the rules are tilted in the favor of the defender because the defender gets to write the rules. And so, by that very nature, the competition is difficult, which makes it exciting and challenging."

The boats in the competition are closer to aircraft than traditional yachts.

The design of the boat, called the AC75, as in America's Cup 75-feet, is a foiling sailboat. The boats feature two large hydrofoils that swing down into the water and lift the hull of the boat out of the water, allowing the boat to "fly" above the water with the foils acting as underwater wings using the same physics that allow an airplane to fly.

The boats can move more than twice as fast as the wind it's using to sail. In the last America's Cup in 2021, the American Magic boat Patriot reached speeds of 60 mph in a 25 mph wind.

Winter training

The team selected Pensacola as a winter training base during the last America's Cup because the geography and wind conditions in Pensacola Bay made it "a perfect spot" to train, Hutchinson said.

"The sailing is really, really good, and then put on top of it, how welcoming everybody here has been to us," Hutchinson said. "It's a perfect spot for us to come and train and develop."

The city of Pensacola included the prospect of a potential American Magic training facility in its $53 million Triumph Gulf Coast application.

"The goal has to be that for (the 38th America's Cup) that we're building at our own facility here in Pensacola, and then we're manufacturing or finishing off our own sails here in Pensacola, and that the engineering and the design is being done by people here in Pensacola and the surrounding community," Hutchinson said.

Hutchinson said a major vision of the team's owners is to boost the marine industry in the United States in aspects of engineering, design and manufacturing while also driving interest in the sport of sailing.

Hutchinson said growing the sport will require driving interest at the youth level and training the next generation of Olympic sailors.

"The nice thing about Pensacola is that the No. 1 most critical part of it is already here, and that's the water and the venue," Hutchinson said.

More: Estuary program could be powerful guardian for Pensacola waters — with a bit more time

Hutchinson said getting youth interest in sailing is important to building the sport and noted the Pensacola Yacht Club offers good beginners sailing classes, but he hopes there will be more opportunities in the future.

"What needs to be developed is some level of community sailing and some level of community support that allows for an opportunity, not just for yacht club kids, but for all kids to come and participate and learn about the sport," Hutchinson said.

The team has about 96 members working in various fields, and many have come to live in Pensacola with their families. Hutchinson said with the families who now live here, about 300 people associated with the team call Pensacola home.

Hutchinson recently got his Florida driver's license in town, and the clerk asked him what he did for a living.

"I said, 'Well, you know, American Magic,' and I just started to say, 'We're Pensacola's professional sailing team for the America's Cup,'" Hutchinson said. "... We represent the New York Yacht Club. We represent the United States, but we also represent Pensacola."

Back on the water

The team is already back on the water in Pensacola Bay. Last week and over the weekend, the team conducted its first water trials since the Patriot was brought back from New Zealand. The team plans to be out on the water again on Wednesday.

Past America's Cup competitions also meant a cadre of spies from other teams in town scoping out the progress of the boat, but with the latest America's Cup rules, spying is now officially sponsored with an America's Cup recon team observing American Magic on behalf of all of the other teams. The recon team photographs every move the boat makes outside of its tent at the port.

The recon team reported that the Patriot was out in Pensacola Bay on Sunday and sailed for the first time reaching speeds of 20 mph, an unimaginable speed for a traditional sailboat but an easy day on the water for American Magic.

Video taken by the recon team showed the Patriot hull lifted out of the water as the boat cruised in view of Community Maritime Park and Bruce Beach.

American Magic is committed to the 37th America's Cup in 2024 and the following 38th America's Cup, likely to be in 2027.

"We know that we're coming back to Pensacola, and it's becoming part of our DNA and part of our area to develop and train," Hutchinson said.

American Magic sails new 'Patriot' AC75 for the first time ahead of 37th America's Cup

T uesday in Barcelona, Spain, American Magic took its first spin in the boat it hopes to sail to victory in the 37th America's Cup.

The 75-foot boat took to the waters with its mainsail sporting a large "Pensacola, Florida" logo that it will carry for the entire international race series this fall.

Before sailing, the New York Yacht Club Vice Commodore Clare Harrington christened the new AC75 as "Patriot," the second boat sailed by American Magic to carry that name.

The previous Patriot was also an AC75 and sailed many times in Pensacola as the team gathered data and trained for the version unveiled this week. The previous Patriot had its last sail i n the waters of Pensacola Bay in February 2023 .

American Magic lease approved: Find out what's included

Much like the rules of Formula 1 racing, the sailboat is a 75-foot foiling monohull that meets the AC75 design rules laid out by the America's Cup. Still, within those rules, the American Magic team has made its own designs to give it an edge in the racing competition set to take place this fall.

"The New York Yacht Club has never wavered from its core purpose of ensuring international competition at the highest level of skill and performance," Harrington said at the Patriot's christening. "That is our tradition. However, the launch of Patriot also signifies innovation, blending two distinct elements: tradition and innovation. And so I bring to American Magic the heartfelt wishes of all 3,400 plus members of the New York Yacht Club for your success in the upcoming competition, maintaining the club's tradition through your inspired innovation."

The team said that more than 108,000 design hours and 65,000 construction hours went into making the Patriot.

"We followed our own design path with Patriot as we pushed the limits of the AC75 rule while tailoring for the Barcelona venue," American Magic Design Coordinator Scott Ferguson said in a team press release.

The team had the boat foiling after running some initial tests on it, before having to bring it back to the dock as the weather forecast in Barcelona called for thunderstorms.

"As far as first days go inside the American Magic program, really, this was probably our best day," Terry Hutchinson, president of sailing operations at American Magic, told an America's Cup camera crew after the sail.

The Patriot was built and designed at the American Magic's previous headquarters in Rhode Island, but the boat will return to Pensacola after the America's Cup this fall. The next AC 75 for the 38th America's Cup is planned to be designed and built at the team's new headquarters at the Port of Pensacola.

The 37th America's Cup will hold its third preliminary regatta this August in Barcelona as a final full-scale practice race.

Then the Louis Vuitton Cup will take place in August and September 2024, where the teams will compete for the right to race against the defending team, Emirates New Zealand, in the actual 37th America's Cup in October 2024.

AMERICAN MAGIC CONCLUDES CAMPAIGN FOR 36th AMERICA'S CUP

image1

Auckland, New Zealand - New York Yacht Club American Magic, the U.S. Challenger for the America's Cup, was eliminated from the Prada Cup Semifinal following a loss in the fourth race of the series against the Challenger of Record, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli of Italy.

American Magic's participation in the events associated with the 36th America's Cup marked the 30th time in the 170-year history of the event that a New York Yacht Club-backed team had competed as either the Defender or as a Challenger. The campaign for Auckland 2021 was also the club's first attempt in 18 years to reclaim the oldest trophy in international sport.

"We all recognized very early on the legacy that we represent with the New York Yacht Club," said Terry Hutchinson, the Skipper and Executive Director of American Magic. "They've been in the game longer than most, and so in that light, I think when I look back it's without question my greatest honor to be involved. And at the same time, you feel the sting of defeat."

The team showed tremendous determination in returning to the Prada Cup racecourse 11 days after sustaining severe damage and nearly sinking during the Round Robins stage. Nevertheless, due to a loss of critical racing and training time while repairs were carried out, American Magic was unable to match the performance development achieved by the Italian syndicate in between the Round Robins and Semifinal stages of the event.

"I just can't say enough; to have been through that whole thing and to be able to get back out there and go sailing again," said Dean Barker, a 7-time America's Cup campaigner and one of the winning helmsmen at the Auckland 2000 edition of the event. "It's obviously disappointing for us to finish the way it has, but I'm incredibly proud of the team and what they achieved to get the boat back on the water after such difficult circumstances."

Luna Rossa demonstrated noticeably increased speed and efficiency against American Magic, and turned in a nearly flawless performance over the best-of-seven series. With four wins in four tries, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, who are on their sixth campaign for the Cup since 2000, decisively earned a berth in the Prada Cup Final. The winner of the Prada Cup will face Emirates Team New Zealand in the 36th America's Cup Match Presented by Prada.

The story of the team began in late 2017 when world champion sailors Hap Fauth and Doug DeVos joined with motorsports icon Roger Penske to become Team Principals for the U.S. Challenger. From its founding onwards, American Magic pursued the twin goals of winning the America's Cup and re-engaging the American sailing audience with the premier event in the sport. While the first mission remains incomplete for now, much was also done to pursue the second.

American Magic was the first Cup team to use the Newport, Rhode Island, area as its primary training location in roughly a quarter of a century. The team also restarted the 128-year old tradition of building America's Cup yachts in the Ocean State, and was the first Cup team to train (during the colder months) on the Gulf of Mexico since the 1970s. Pensacola, Florida, was used as a winter base until the team relocated to Auckland in mid 2020. American Magic was a high-profile presence in each area it operated from, and conducted hundreds of presentations, press interviews, tour stops, and digital outreach projects in an effort to boost U.S. awareness and interest in the America's Cup.

"We wouldn't be sitting here without each one of [the Team Principals]," added Hutchinson. "When we started this program in 2017, I was getting a little bit of cold feet and I communicated that to Doug and Hap. And Doug wrote me a nice note back, saying 'I think we should go for it.' And here we sit. And from there, partnering with Roger Penske. All of these people, and the [New York Yacht] Club, represent what's great about our country, [with] the passion that they bring to the sport and the passion that they bring to sailing. Roger was always quick to say he didn't know a lot about sailing, but he knows a lot about winning. And his influence on our team was always present."

American Magic's performance program was characterized by a relentless work ethic and a commitment to on-the-water testing unmatched by the other teams. The U.S. Challenger was the first to launch a full-size test boat in 2018, and recorded 92 days of testing on "the Mule." The first AC75 to sail and foil, DEFIANT, came next, and completed 66 days of sailing despite delays receiving event-supplied equipment, seasonal logistical challenges, and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The team's second AC75, PATRIOT, was flown from Bristol to Auckland upon completion. PATRIOT was the first 2nd-generation AC75 to be launched, and her final day of racing at the Prada Cup was her 49th day on the water.

Over three and a half years of design, production and testing work, American Magic became a Challenger worthy of the formidable competitive field in Auckland. The other three teams all returned to the 36th America's Cup after participating in at least some of the 35th Cup cycle (Bermuda 2017) and in the case of Emirates Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa, many previous campaigns.

After losing two America's Cup World Series (ACWS) exhibition regattas to COVID 19-related cancellation, American Magic charged out of the gate at ACWS Auckland, the world's first AC75 regatta. PATRIOT turned heads by beating Emirates Team New Zealand's TE REHUTAI once during a practice race, and again on the first official day of racing. American Magic finished the event in second overall with a 4-2 record, and seemed primed to continue on a positive trajectory into the Prada Cup, the Challenger Section Series.

Sadly for the U.S. team, this was not to be. An opening-day loss to INEOS Team UK in the Round Robins was followed by a frustrating double-loss to both other Challengers in marginal racing conditions on Day 2. American Magic showed impressive poise on Day 3 of the event, and was leading Luna Rossa in strong winds by several hundred meters when, in the span of a few seconds, American Magic's sleek blue AC75 bore away onto the final leg, lost control in a gust, launched into the air, crashed down hard, lost a sizable section of her forward port-side hull, and started to rapidly sink.

The story of American Magic's fight to save PATRIOT, assisted by three competitors, Auckland's first responders, AC36 race managers and many others, resonated with millions around the world who watched, listened and read about the heartbreaking accident and its aftermath.

"I think the competitors showed an incredible amount of sportsmanship and really demonstrated what sailing is about at the highest level when they all reacted to the PATRIOT's near-sinking," said Hutchinson. "It's just heartfelt."

The team was relieved that no one on board PATRIOT was seriously injured, but faced an uphill climb to stay in the competition. The level of damage incurred by PATRIOT was substantial, and world normally take weeks or months to actualize. Nearly every system onboard, including the critical foil cant system and much of the electronics, had to be replaced. In addition, due to composite core damage, a section of the hull much larger than the hole itself had to be cut away, rebuilt, and plugged.

As audiences in the United States and overseas watched American Magic doggedly restore PATRIOT to fighting shape, 24 hours a day, for a week and a half, thousands of messages and gestures of support flowed to the team. American Magic re-launched PATRIOT a remarkable nine days after the incident, but were unable to beat Luna Rossa in the Prada Cup Semifinals.

"It's obviously disappointing," said Hutchinson. "There's not a person inside of our team that likes losing. You have 135 'Type-A' personalities all pushing for the same thing, in the same boat, for the same result. I have nothing but pride for what we've done over the last three and a half years. All we can do is take it on the chin, understand our strengths and weaknesses, and move the whole game forward."

New York Yacht Club American Magic has now completed a multi-year campaign that was at every stage relentless, unquestionably competitive, occasionally heartbreaking and, ultimately, inspiring to many. The future of American Magic as a team has yet to be determined, and the winners of both the Prada Cup and the 36th America's Cup Match have yet to be revealed. Nevertheless, the team has taken its place in the long and proud tradition of America's Cup teams representing the New York Yacht Club and the United States of America.

"Somebody has to win, and somebody has to lose," said Hutchinson, a 16-time world champion who has campaigned for the America's Cup five times. "We always felt that we were prepared, and that we've done things in the correct manner to be on the right side of things here [in Auckland]."

Race 3: Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team (port entry) def. New York Yacht Club American Magic by 35 seconds For the first half of the two-minute pre-start period, the two boats kept their distance. PATRIOT, the U.S. yacht, worked deep into the starting box while LUNA ROSSA, the Italian AC75, stuck to the right-hand edge. When it was time to turn for the line, American Magic was forced to make the call whether to lead back or trail, and Dean Barker and the U.S. team chose the former. The result was an even start, with PATRIOT nailing the pin end and LUNA ROSSA hitting the middle of the line, both at pace. The AC75's raced toward the port boundary in lockstep, with American Magic tacking first and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli settling into a comfortable leeward position. From there, Francesco Bruni, LUNA ROSSA’s port side helmsman, utilized the team’s slightly larger foils to squeeze to weather and force the American team into an early tack. By the next cross, LUNA ROSSA had built a 100-meter lead over PATRIOT and for the rest of the opening leg made sure to protect its advantage by forcing the Americans toward the unfavored left side of the course. “The right side of the course was strong,” said Skipper and Executive Director Terry Hutchinson. “We were going pretty good to leeward of them off the line, but their timing was really good for that start and we had to take Plan B. You knew at the start that Plan B was Plan B for a reason.” LUNA ROSSA led by just 13 seconds at the first upwind and then 22 seconds at the first leeward mark. On the second upwind leg, the Italians showed both a slight speed edge and also the power of leading a match race in a narrow, boundary-defined corridor of steady wind. By the second upwind leg, their lead over PATRIOT had pushed out to 41 seconds. Hutchinson, helmsman Dean Barker and the American Magic crew weren’t finished yet, and PATRIOT seemed to rediscover the downwind speed that had been so impressive in the Prada America’s Cup World Series in December.

At the second leeward mark, with two legs remaining in the race, the lead was cut in half. Equally as important, American Magic was able to execute a tricky jibe directly into a rounding of the righthand gate mark, which created a split away from the Italians. PATRIOT worked away from LUNA ROSSA, seeking any leverage she could get. Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli continued to sail flawlessly on the final upwind leg, however, rebuilding the lead to 41 seconds at the final mark of the six-leg course. American Magic picked up a few seconds on the final run, but not nearly enough to put the result in doubt. The Challenger of Record from Italy crossed the line with a 35-second lead.

Race 4: Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team (starboard entry) def. New York Yacht Club American Magic by 3:51 While each pre-start of the semifinals had its nuances, each seemed to come down to a single encounter roughly 1 minute to 45 seconds from the start.

In the fourth race of the Prada Cup semifinals, Dean Barker was the first to turn back toward the line, with the Italians deciding to take the leading position. Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli controlled the reminder of the pre-start and was able to win it, heading off toward the port barrier. American Magic started slightly behind, quickly spun into a tack, and headed toward the right side of the course. Unlike the previous race, LUNA ROSSA was determined to protect the left side of the course from PATRIOT, and it was a strategy that quickly paid off. The Italian team earned a lead of 150 to 200 meters halfway up the beat.

What that distance would’ve translated into at the windward mark, and whether American Magic’s possible speed edge downwind would’ve been amplified in the slightly greater breeze soon became a moot point, however.

Just as PATRIOT was about to start her final tack before the windward mark, a problem struck the Foil Cant System (FCS). The team was forced to sail well outside the course boundary before they could find a workaround, get the board down, and turn back toward the windward gate.

"We had to tack off the start line and then I think it was the next one after that where the board just wouldn't go down and we couldn't [tack]," said Barker. "There was no fix on the water, so we had to try a number of different solutions on the yacht to try and get [the FCS] to activate. As you would have seen, we never really recovered from the situation." At the first mark the delta was 45 seconds. Continuing struggles with the FCS on the American AC75 during the ensuing legs made the result of the race a foregone conclusion. Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli needed to only avoid a major breakdown to clinch a spot in the Prada Cup finals, which is exactly what the Italian team did.

The final delta of 3:51 doesn’t tell the story of the race, however, as the American Magic crew fought just to get the boat across the finish line, doing so with their heads held high. The 4-0 scoreboard propelled Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team into the Prada Cup Final against INEOS Team UK.

"We were up against a team that made a big step on from when we last saw them two weeks ago," said Barker. "In this game, in these development boats, a week is an eternity and you see how quickly things can be turned around. And so again they've done a great job to improve from where they were [in the Round Robins]."

What a day for New York Yacht Club American Magic who called for all-hands on deck at the base super-early this morning, ahead of rolling out their new AC75 at 5.45am with the first set of slightly asymmetric race foils, rudder and rig all in place and revealing an interesting deck layout putting the helms and trimmers side by side and well forward. This is a boat bristling with design features and quirks and plenty of systems upgrades, translated across from their warhorse AC75 of the last America’s Cup. Now it’s all on to try and bring the famous trophy back to West 44th Street in Manhattan – home of the New York Yacht Club.

Clare Harrington, the Vice-Commodore of the New York Yacht Club was in Barcelona to christen her, smashing the champagne bottle and revealing the name: ‘Patriot’ – yes you heard that right and a fitting homage to a much-loved team vessel. Once the formalities had been completed just after 8am, a look around the boat revealed much about just how radical American Magic are going.

Recumbent cyclors facing aft was the first thing that leapt out and it’s one of those moments in the America’s Cup where you have to see it to believe it and hope none of the cyclors suffer sea-sickness. Interesting and will no doubt spark a thousand theories about increased wattage, sustained power and peak loadings.

On the foil design, American Magic have gone for very sculpted, almost harlequin-style foils blended into a sharp stubby bulb with an aggressive point. The end-plates are a work of art, curving upwards and squared at the top whilst the aero package in the foil arms to meet minimum weight requirements are sculpted asymmetrically so clearly there’s further thought and evaluation that the team will need to complete before making any final decisions on race foil set-up. On the foil arms themselves, up to the knuckle, can be seen three fences, two lower and one upper with very neatly integrated surface cameras.

With technicians swarming the boat and sails loaded onto the chase boat, the dock-out was called at 1.30pm and the start of a whole new chapter in the American Magic history book was written. A 7.5 nautical mile tow test was run at a variety of speeds and gave enough confidence to the team to call in the sails and complete the leg back to the base. The team set the MN2-1 mainsail and initially opted for the J4 jib before deciding that in the conditions that would be too under-canvassed and the J3-1 was hoisted with the obligatory LiDar cameras capturing every small nuance and detail.

A short-ish first stint was brought swiftly to a close with the technicians jumping back onboard for what looked like a jib system issue but five minutes later, the boat was sailing again with the harbour getting close. Recon recorded two tacks, one bear-away and a round-up to finish at 5pm at the harbour entrance.

Speaking afterwards, Terry Hutchinson, President of Sailing Operations was delighted with Patriot’s maiden sail saying: “As far as first days go inside the American Magic programme really this is probably our best first day. In our first boat ‘Defiant’ we had a couple issues on the very first day, even though it was a good first day there, but we broke a lot of things.

america's cup yacht magic

Our first day with the previous ‘Patriot’ we had a great sail that ended in a big stuff and back to the dock with a lot of broken bits and here the team really executed on the day. We put the boat in the water christened her, thank you Commodore Harrington for that, and went out and methodically work through the systems checks and then went for a good light air sail…We would have stayed out but we got weather coming, the weatherman was skedaddling us in because apparently there’s a risk of thunderstorms here later on in the day and so you know it’s day one and there will be a lot to do in the shed tonight and I’m certain the sailors and everybody wanted to keep going, but probably best that the weatherman called it for us.”

america's cup yacht magic

Looking forward, the schedule seems simple as Terry explained: “The plan from here on will be to close out this week with some sailing and we’ve got a couple more days of sea-trialling and a couple more days of just working through the systems, but I would suspect very quickly will be with race marks out there and we started a great pattern of development with the AC40s in how we work the boats up there and each day how we got ready to go racing in those, and so I think we’re going to follow a pretty similar pattern there and learn to develop the boat and figure out how we can extract performance.”

america's cup yacht magic

Terry seems more than comfortable with where the overall programme is at and praised the AC40 two-boat training that the team completed recently saying: “I think the entire team was excited by the AC40 racing that we did, we spent three months of in-house racing and we got over 100 races and 100 starts against each other and that was quality team building, quality development time and so we’re executing our plan, if the others get a couple more days then I would happily trade the racing of April for four or five or nine extra days inside of an AC75.”

Great first day for NYYC American Magic – the campaign with a real air of confidence and excellence around every facet. The coming weeks will be defining.  (Magnus Wheatley)

On-Water Recon Report – NYYC American Magic:  American Magic rolled out their new AC75, Boat Three, at 05:45. The team revealed new foils, both in chrome finish, each with slightly different foil arm stocks. The rudder, mounted right back, looks to be the legacy rudder from Patriot used in the 36th America’s Cup. The mast was stepped, and shrouds connected, before the crew stepped off the yacht for a quick crane lift test.

america's cup yacht magic

The yacht was named ‘Patriot’ and christened by Clare Harrington, Vice Commodore of the New York Yacht Club. The yacht was craned in at 08:10, revealing on each side, three pods interior and one exterior. Looking at one side, the two rear cyclor pods have bigger openings than seen on other boats, which was later discovered to seat recumbent cyclors facing aft. In front of the cyclor pods is the helm pod, with the trimmer pod right beside. An F1 style steering wheel, with control buttons on the wheel was also noted. LiDAR instruments were mounted on the sheer-line, in line with the centre of the mainsail.

A long list of systems testing was carried out through the rest of the morning. The team started with setting up the Cunningham system and mast rotation, followed by FCS testing. Back stays were connected from the mast head to a large actuator in place of the mainsheet system, and a thick line was hoisted with the jib halyard in place of the jib, running through a sheave connected to the jib sheet, then increasing the load on the jib sheet and main actuator.

The team docked out at 13:20, lifting each foil individually before exiting the port. Tow testing commenced from the port entrance at 13:35, towing NE for 7.5NM, at speeds ranging between 20-30 knots. The team came to a stop 5NM offshore, and began sail fitting, first slowly hoisting the MN2-1 mainsail, followed by the J4-1 jib. While still alongside the chase, the J4 was dropped and replaced with the J3-1 jib, before commencing sailing at 15:38.

The yacht sailed in displacement mode for just over 15 minutes, with crew inspecting main and jib systems. Tech crew jumped back on board for a quick check-over, before the team started their second sailing stint at 16:00. The yacht was sailed upwind back to the port entrance, taking off at approximately 18kn boat speed. The team performed two tacks, one touch and go, the other just about fully foiling, as well as a bear away and round up. The yacht came to a stop after 20 minutes of sailing on foil, with sails dropped by 16:40. The team docked in at 17:00 and the yacht was craned out half an hour later, before being rolled back into the shed at 18:10 for further works to continue throughout the evening.

INEOS and the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 team spent thousands of hours and put more than 120,000 parts together to create RB3. The highly engineered monohull will “fly” across the water at an estimated top speed of 50 knots. The boat didn’t reach that on Wednesday’s trial, but Ainslie said it eclipsed 40 knots and passed crucial tests.

“With so many new systems to test—new foils, new rig and sails, new control systems, and so on—it’s standard practice to test everything in a controlled manner before putting up the sails and letting rip,” he explained. “What we do not yet know is whether this is the boat that is going to end 173 years of hurt.”

INEOS is the fifth team to unveil its AC75. Alinghi was the first to launch, followed by Team New Zealand , Luna Rossa , and American Magic . (Team France has yet to reveal its racer.) Up until this point, the vessels were kept tightly under wraps. Ainslie says he has noticed subtle differences between the five, but nothing that has made him worry. He believes that INEOS has one of the most aggressive designs in terms of aerodynamic modeling—not exactly surprising given the Mercedes F1 partnership. Hopefully, that means the Brits can finally bring the “Auld Mug” home to the U.K. After losing the first Cup in 1851, Britain has never managed to win it back.

ZEPHYR TO ZEPHYR IN CALM BARCELONA

image1

It was ‘one of those days’ in Barcelona where the tightrope was walked between a potentially building breeze from the east to cool the city as so often happens or a complete shut-down. Sadly today, the latter prevailed with the anemometer barely rising above 6 knots all afternoon for Alinghi Red Bull Racing and NYYC American Magic, the two new-gen AC75s both hoping to kick off the week’s training in style and continue their positive momentum.

Over the weekend, news came through via official declaration of upgrades to Alinghi Red Bull Racing’s foils with new inner tips - that look symmetrical with the outers - and a change to the flap profiles. Small details but hopefully big gains. However, on a day where flight was tricky and speed-builds were desperate, it wasn’t the day to please the data analysts back ashore, but plenty to take away in terms of down-range trim.

america's cup yacht magic

Try as they might, it was a day of persistence and patience for the Swiss who were coaxing and willing ‘BoatOne’ to flight with the only realistic option being a tow-up from the Chase Boat. This they did four times and were rewarded with just minutes of flight time before the boat came down into displacement and the process of speed-building started again. After just over three hours on the water, the team called it a day and wisely headed back to base.

america's cup yacht magic

Speaking afterwards, Sam Manuard, naval architect of considerable repute and responsible for some incredible cutting-edge yacht designs in classes like the IMOCA, spoke to the recon team and summed up the day saying: “Today was a light wind day, we were on the bottom end of the True Wind Speed, so we practised a lot trimming the sails and getting to speed to try and take off.” As one of the team of naval architects for Alinghi Red Bull Racing, Sam spoke about the unique design of the hull shape on BoatOne saying: “The concept is to make the boat as much efficient as possible from an aerodynamic point of view and this is how we ended up with his shape.”

america's cup yacht magic

And asked about the other boats in the fleet, Sam added: “It’s super interesting especially through the eyes of the Recon and yeah we spend some time looking at them and trying to understand what could be their strengths and weaknesses.” Sam was then asked whether there were designs that the Alinghi Red Bull Racing team discarded in the design process of BoatOne and he coolly responded: “Actually, yes.” Interesting. Before adding further: “At this stage when you’re training alone, you're always the champion, so we need to work do our homework, progress, progress, progress, and there still is some progress to be made before the regattas.”

america's cup yacht magic

Meanwhile out on pretty much exactly the same stretch of water as the Swiss, NYYC American Magic were having similar struggles and after exiting the harbour at just before quarter to 1pm they were greeted by just 3.5 knots of breeze. Not enough to fly despite the team’s efforts at reaching – again this was a time for patience.

america's cup yacht magic

Today Patriot unveiled some upgraded detailing on the foils with what the recon team described as: “four spray rails of different lengths along the port foil arm stock starting from the leading edge, and one spray rail on the starboard foil arm stock below the skeg from the leading edge to trailing edge.”

america's cup yacht magic

After a change up to the big J1 jib – the first time we’ve seen this on Patriot – the boat came alive and flight was secured some 45 minutes later after an estimated speed build to around 18 knots and a smart ‘pop’ to flight. It didn’t last long and on the first tack they were back in displacement with the technicians onboard examining the jib track on the foredeck.

america's cup yacht magic

Whilst the Swiss called it a day, American Magic stayed out and, as is so often the case with sailing, a golden hour occurred late into the afternoon and the best breeze of the day filtered in for a short while producing 6.5 knots of maximum pressure. Plenty enough for Patriot, she was smartly up on her foils on a solid upwind with four tacks mirrored by a downwind leg with just three gybes – the best sailing of the day. An attempt at another lap saw touchdowns through the manoeuvres and the team called it a day, docking in just before 6pm after five hours on the water.

america's cup yacht magic

Speaking afterwards, John Croom the popular and energetic cyclor for American Magic spoke about the day saying: “The focus was take-offs in the light wind breeze, I mean I think it's what? Day three for us out there? So we're trying to get as much exposure as we can with the system and you know we had this light day opportunity and so I think it was a good opportunity for us to figure out if we can get up and get flying but it was pretty successful, even got into some race laps there so that's pretty cool."

america's cup yacht magic

Talking about the recumbent cyclor position, John gave an interesting insight into how the team are feeling saying: “Yeah I mean it's lower deck smaller frontal area so yeah I would think it would be a pretty big gain I mean I don't know I’m not an aero-physicist or anything so I don't really fully know but yeah I would assume smaller would be faster at least it was in cycling when I did it.”

america's cup yacht magic

Any worries about power output were completed dispelled as John added:  “Actually, I think we're all putting out more power so we're not having any issues.” And in terms of how the cyclors, who rotated today, are physically faring in what he describes as a ‘hole facing backwards’, John said: “No, we're all pretty fresh I think it's more or less just giving everybody an opportunity to figure out what's going on, we only have limited time to sail so switching us out to just get the exposure and the idea we're all still learning so I would say that we're probably one of the younger more inexperienced cyclor setups in that sense and so we're learning comms and all those other things.”

america's cup yacht magic

Interesting day for both the Americans and the Swiss in conditions that were outside of the racing limits but offering many clues about the initial potency of each design direction. Plenty for the naval architects and engineers to pore over tonight. (Magnus Wheatley)

On-Water Recon Report – Alinghi Red Bull Racing: The Swiss team rolled out their AC75 at 10:30 after a thirty-minute delay. New versions ‘E’ of both foil wings were declared over the weekend, plus an only new version ‘B’ of one of the foil flaps. In relation to this, new wing tips on the inner sides of the port and starboard side wings were identified, which seem to be symmetric to those on the outer sides. On the other hand, the white hardware equipment positioned on the aft part of the deck which was described the past week, seems to probably be part of a Starlink hardware kit aimed to improve connectivity.

america's cup yacht magic

The boat was craned to the water at 10:55 and finally docked out at 13:00 after an extra one-hour delay, probably due to lack of wind. The M1-1 was selected for the session, combined with the J2-1. Both sails were hoisted just before heading out of the port at 13:25. Very weak easterly winds dominated the day, staying under five knots of intensity all the time. Most of the day was spent trying to take-off on both tacks in non-racing conditions. However, it was not possible.

During the closest moments to take-off, we recorded 16.0 knots of speed over ground, sailing with a true wind angle of 100 degrees approximately. Four towing take-offs occurred during the day, being able to stay flying for over a minute after two of them, maintaining a constant speed of 20 knots of speed over the ground. The jib-sheet position on the clew was adjusted and modified in various opportunities and minor works on the jib track were identified.

After towing around looking for wind, Alinghi Red Bull Racing decided to head back to the base at 15:45. Once inside the harbour, sails got lowered, and the team docked at 16:05. A good show of perseverance from the team trying to test performance in bottom-end wind conditions. Sebastian Peri Brusa – Recon on Alinghi Red Bull Racing

On-Water Recon Report – NYYC American Magic: American Magic rolled out Patriot at 09:50 ahead a day committed to light wind take-offs. Small changes to both foils were noted, with four spray rails of different lengths along the port foil arm stock starting from the leading edge, and one spray rail on the starboard foil arm stock below the skeg from the leading edge to trailing edge. Following 10:15 crane in, hydraulics tests were underway, with mast rotation and FCS testing observed. It looked like foil lifting was being synchronised with something below the foredeck, perhaps jib system, highlighted by (inaudible) communication between helmsman and techs in the foredeck, with two additional tech crew at the mast base. Further work was carried out inside the jib track.

The team docked out at 12:30 and hoisted the MN2-1 mainsail and J2-1 jib at the port entrance, with less than 5 knots measured on the anemometer at the harbour entrance. Patriot was sailed on a reach in attempt to take-off but to no avail, prompting the team to exchange the J2 for the J1-1 jib. This marks the first time this J1 was hoisted. After some time, the yacht managed to take-off at 90deg TWA, at approximately 18kn boat speed under six knots of wind. A foiling tack was attempted but the yacht touched down mid manoeuvre, as the tech crew jumped on board to focus on the jib system.

After an hour and a half of sailing in displacement, AM found some breeze and were able to sail an upwind/downwind, completing four tacks upwind and three gybes downwind, of which just one tack was a touchdown. Minimal traveller movement was noted while sailing. During this stint, the team focused on the port foil, with a drone observed flying directly above, before taking a short break. The team set off on another lap, with as much as nine knots TWS measured at the beginning of the stint, dropping back to six knots half an hour later. Another upwind/downwind lap was attempted, with only one touch and go tack observed and four touchdown manoeuvres. At this point the team called it a day and towed the yacht back to port to drop sails at 17:40.

The team docked in at 17:55 after just over five hours on the water, of which 153 minutes were spent sailing, divided into six stints. 22 manoeuvres were performed with a 32% fully foiling success rate. Light rust stains were noted on the foil arm hips, just below the skegs, though less significant than previous days.
