News: Gunboat Launches Gunboat 68 "Break Free"

Discussion in ' Latest Catamaran Launches ' started by Yacht News , Apr 26, 2022 .

Gunboat 68 "Break Free" Launched To The Water European manufacturer Gunboat has announced the launching of one of their latest builds, the Gunboat 68. This one is called "Break Free" and is the latest to hit the water as shown in a YouTube video released by the yard yesterday. Although visuals of the launch emerged yesterday the vessel actually launched in February. In reality Break Free should be soon ready for delivery to her owners.

break free catamaran

Gunboats are typically known as performance-oriented sailing catamarans and they are well suited for quick passagemaking and even in regattas. The Gunboat 68 is no exception but she has the relaxing and luxury interior to tone things down alot to blur the lines between a racer and a luxury cruiser. For example, below is the aft cockpit area looking forward of another Gunboat 68. Teak-finished floors and plush cushioned-topped built-in seating and inside has the galley to port and dining to starboard.

break free catamaran

The main deck level gives access below decks to the two hulls which primarily contain the four cabins that guests and owner will sleep in. In this configuration guests should have their own bathroom. The width of the hulls give the vessel an imposing stance, even on a 68-foot vessel. Note, presently the Gunboat 68 is not quite the flagship of Gunboat it certainly feels like one. There is the Gunboat 72V ahead of her as well as the 80.

break free catamaran

Construction of the Gunboat 68 is fully carbon-based. The LOA is 68-feet with a beam of 29.9-feet and a draft of just 3.9-feet with the boards up. With the boards down the draft increases significantly to 9.84-feet. Displacement at maximum loading is around 52,470 lbs. Fuel capacity is approximately 756 LT stored in two 378 LT tanks. Demountable furniture in the salon and aft cockpit can be moved, linked and locked in place to allow you to modify the bridgedeck interior layout quickly and easily for cruise, race, cocktail party, or lounge modes. The yard is also working on the first hull in their flagship model, the Gunboat 80 of which the first two hulls of the model are presently in build. Waking up to a new paradise each morning is a unique experience reserved for just the fortunate few. It's a dream we yearn for. Can you imagine it for yourself?

Arguably the most elegant yacht of its size

The Alegria 67 catamaran shares the same design philosophy as the Samana 59, but with an extra touch of decadence

With a waterline length of over 20 metres, it’s only logical that the Alegria 67 should include the quality of equipment and features worthy of this boat’s status as a true yacht. We have certainly achieved that, and more. Among its remarkable original features is the boat’s centrepiece, a large jacuzzi in the forward cockpit, which you can fill with sea or fresh water, according to your preference. Why not try both options and then decide for yourself? Luxury should always be experienced at its optimum.

3 Boom Brake Options + How to Rig a Boom Preventer on the Cheap [DIY]

By Author Fiona McGlynn

Posted on Last updated: November 20, 2023

For anyone who’s experienced an accidental jibe—with the boom whipping across the cockpit at dangerous velocities—the benefits of using a boom brake or jibe preventers will be obvious.

These simple rigging systems are easy to set up and can reduce some of the risks associated with downwind sailing .

Boom strikes can result in crew members being seriously injured or thrown overboard. According to a German study, boom strikes were identified as the most common cause of sailing injuries overall .

Uncontrolled jibes are also hard on your boat. Boom brakes can reduce stress on the rigging and can prevent breakages and material damage.

For these reasons, we invested in a Dutchman boom brake to take on our bluewater sail across the Pacific—and I’m so glad we did!

Over 13,000 nm (most of it downwind), we didn’t accidentally jibe once. Our boom brake was part of the reason, often buying us precious seconds to make a course correction when our mainsail began to backwind.

Dutchman boom brake on a mainsail

Waterborne is reader-supported. When you buy through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission.

So, why doesn’t everyone have a boom brake on their boat? Well for one, it’s an additional line to manage (and some may see it as more clutter on deck), but mostly I think it’s because they can be so expensive.

Boom brakes can be pricey. However, there are plenty of affordable options, especially if you have a small to average-sized cruising boat.

You can also build a DIY preventer with a bit of line and a few blocks for next to nothing. I’ve included instructions on how to rig a boom preventer at the end of this post.

So, let’s start by diving into your options.

Boom brake vs preventer

The terms boom brake and preventer are often used interchangeably but there’s an important difference between the two.

A preventer stops the boom from rapidly swinging across the boat’s centerline . At its simplest, a boom preventer setup might consist of a line that runs from the end of the boom to a point on the deck forward of the mast.

One of the major drawbacks of a preventer is that it has to be released and resecured every time you jibe or change the point of sail. If you accidentally jibe and don’t release the preventer quickly enough, it can lead to excessive heel and a potential broach.

Boom brakes

A boom brake is a type of preventer that slows the boom as it crosses the centerline so that the jibe occurs in a more controlled fashion.

The main advantage of a properly tuned boom brake over a static preventer is that the boom isn’t kept in a back-winded position in a gybe. Instead, the boom brake slowly allows the boom to cross to the other side

The level of braking effect can be adjusted either by tensioning a brake line or by changing how the brake line runs through the brake.

There are three types of boom brakes:

break free catamaran

Friction path boom brake

This is the simplest type of boom brake. The friction path boom brake is attached to a mid-point on the boom and the brake control line runs port to starboard, through the brake.

You can adjust the desired level of fiction by changing how you run the brake line through the brake.

Friction path boom brake

  • More affordable
  • No moving parts
  • Requires going forward to adjust the friction on the brake when wind conditions change or when you change your mainsail area (e.g., reefing).
  • More challenging to tune the tension

The Capt’ Don boom brake is by far the most affordable boom brake on the market. It’s made from 14mm polished stainless steel and reportedly makes for easy installation. For the cruiser on a budget, this simple and robust boom brake will likely fit the bill.

One potential limitation is that it’s not meant to be used as a preventer and should only be rigged with enough tension to slow the boom travel.

break free catamaran

Wichard Gyb’Easy

The Gyb’Easy boom brake is more expensive though it comes with Wichard’s proprietary Gyb’Flex 16m line and a mounting shackle. It can be used on mainsails with less than 430 sqft (40 sqm) in sail area .

Wichard Lindemann Aluminum Boom Brake GYB`Easy

Drum boom brake

Drum boom brakes have a fixed cylinder or drum. The brake line runs from port to starboard and is wrapped around the drum. The more wraps around the drum, the more friction is produced.

drum boom brake

  • Easy to tune the tension from the cockpit
  • Must rerun brake line and add/remove wraps to adjust the maximum amount of friction

There used to be a few drum-style boom brakes on the market including the Fleming Gybomatic and Heinson. These two no longer seem to be available (at least online). Currently, drum boom brake options include:

Walder Boom Brake

$439 for Walder 203

Walder boom brakes come in a range of sizes. Their Walder 203 model costs $439 and is rated for boats 30 to 39 ft (9 to 12 m) in length with main sail areas of less than 450 sqft (42 sqm) They’re available in three finishes (aluminum, black, and titanium) and come with a 10-year warranty.

Scott Boomlock

The Scott Boomlock, made by Sailspar, has been called “The Rolls-Royce of boom brakes” and it doesn’t have a published list price, both of which would suggest that it’s a pretty premium option. One of its unique features is a separate line that can be used to lock the boom in different positions without changing the tension of the brake line. It also slides neatly into the track on the underside of the boom (rather than hanging like a pendant).

Adjustable sheave brake

An adjustable sheave brake uses two static sheaves and one adjustable sheave to tension the brake line.  The main advantage of an adjustable sheave brake is it’s very easy to adjust the tension for a wide range of wind conditions.

break free catamaran

  • Easy to adjust maximum friction with knobs on the boom brake for a somewhat wider variety of wind conditions
  • Moving parts (though we never had an issue with performance or breakage)

Dutchman Boom Brake

$492 for Dutchman 500/500B

The Dutchman Boom Brake, made by Dutchmar, is unique and the only adjustable sheave-type brake. It comes in three sizes with the 500/500B model being designed for 30 to 45 ft (9-14m) boats and a maximum of 500 sqft (45 sqm) sail area.

Tension is controlled from the cockpit with a brake line. The maximum friction can be adjusted with knobs on the boom brake itself (though after the initial setup, we rarely touched them).

Under full tension, it worked like a preventer. With the tension off, the boom swings freely. Of course, it can be set for any degree of tension in between.

We found our Dutchman Boom Brake very easy to install and use. We bought it second hand and in three years of bluewater sailing and near-constant use, we never had an issue.

Dutchman boom brake

How to rig a boom preventer

Rigging a boom preventer is pretty straightforward. It requires line and a couple of blocks.

  • Loop line to the outboard end of the boom with a long bowline. Make the loop long enough that you could undo the bowline without having to bring the boom to the center of the cockpit.
  • Attach a turning block to a strong point on the deck forward of the mast (e.g., pad eyes, toe rail, anchor roller). When choosing the forward attachment location, keep in mind that the preventer will be strongest when the brake line runs perpendicular to the boom.
  • Run the line from the end of the boom forward through the block and back to the cockpit where it can be trimmed with a cockpit winch and secured on a cleat.
  • [Optional] Repeat the first three steps on the other side of the boat.

gybe preventer

If you do not add the second boom brake line, a crew member will have to go forward and rerun the preventer line every time you jibe. You can avoid this by running two lines to the boom, one on each side of the boat. Simply tension the windward line and leave the leeward line lazy. When a jibe is made, release and take up the tension on the new side.

You’ll find there are lots of deck configurations for jibe-preventer rigging, and designs that can improve rope management, deck access, or ease of use. For example, some gybe preventers attach to the mid-point of the boom and others use pendants that are permanently attached to the boom.

I highly recommend experimenting with preventers and boom brakes. For newer sailors, they can take some of the scariness out of gybing, and for experienced sailors, they can add peace of mind.

May the wind always be at your back (and your jibes always be controlled).

I've used the Dutchman Boom Brake on my Mariner 36 sloop, "Sparkle Plenty" for many years. It keeps the boom under control. Besides taming an accidental jibe, the Boom Brake also makes boom travel smoother during tacks reaching off and up wind.

For downwind sailing, the Boom Brake becomes a backup for a traditional jibe preventer run from the cockpit forward to a turning block at the bow and back to a cleat or winch in the cockpit.

A variant of this is offered by legendary sailor and writer, Don Street, where the preventer line is split at a point opposite the mast. There a detachable line is run from the gooseneck of the boom with a clip. The preventer line from the cockpit is then clipped to the second part of the preventer line run from the bow. When it's time to jibe, a crewmember only needs to go forward to the mast to unclip the preventer. Once the jibe completes, the crewmember can reclip to a second preventer line run on the other side.

Don Street demonstrates this method, along with using the Boom Vang as a preventer by moving it forward of the mast and attaching to the rail; and the Boom Brake. Don's video is free to stream at https://www.sailflix.com/videos/erigging-boom-preventers

Very interesting about Don Street's preventer. Thanks for sharing!

Fury Catamaran Snorkel & Beach Break

This summer my wife and I vacationed on the cruise ship Royal Caribbean Allure. The Fury Catamaran was one of the land excursions on the ship. We thought it was g r e a t ! The Catamaran had good music and the drinks were included. The snorkeling was fun and they took pictures under water, which came out great ! They take you to the beach afterwards, where they have many floating events enjoyable for the full family. We would like to thank the full crew of the Fury Catamaran, especially to Adalberto in marketing who went out of his way to help us recover one of our missing pictures. I give this excursion five stars ! Thanks EddyAnn1

The staff were knowledgeable and extremely fun! Jose Luis was fantastic, he was entertaining and through. They made us feel safe and comfortable by keeping a watchful eye on us during the snorkeling portion. Margaritas and beer served onboard (after snorkeling for safety purposes) and then off to the beautiful beach for the duration of the excursion. Best bang for your buck, best usage of time. We experienced so much in 3 hours, including being taught to do the "Wobble" on the way back to the boat. Our group of 5 had an amazing time and the individuals new to snorkeling had a safe, comfortable experience. Thanks Fury!

Booked through Fury Catamarans. All I can say is AWESOME , FANTASTIC, AWESOME, AWESOME, FANTASTIC!!!! Hands down, NO COMPLAINTS. The excursion was great and the tour guides were great as well. Be prepared to have fun!

We were invited on this by friends staying in Cozumel. The Fury is a large Catamaran and ours had probably 40 people on it. But even with the large number it never felt crowded. they take you on a couple of snorkeling trips to different spots. we saw lots of fish and a lobster and turtle and at least one shark. our only complaint on the snorkeling was the water was pretty deep. but after the snorkeling they take you to their own beach where they have an open bar, food included, and a perfect white sand beach with amazing water toys all just for our use. a great surprise and a great ending to the day.

I enjoyed this tour a lot, good margaritas a board, nice snorkel, the crew is very friendly and good time at the beach paddle surfing, etc.

First off, the entire crew was great. That was the highlight of the excursion. Once we started out you got all the drinks you want. We did a 45 minute snorkel in 15-25' of water. It was my wife's first time and she loved it. Kids were thrilled. The private beach with water toys was a riot. There was lots of kids there. On our way back they had more drinks and dancing on board. Once again, staff was great. The entire crew are certified divers and we had a photographer 'Nacho' who took some cool pictures.

Fury Catamaran Snorkel and Beach Break excursion review

Cool Cruiser

Wanted to share our experience on the Fury catamaran excursion from our 6/9 Allure cruise with RCCL.  The catamaran boarded from a nearby pier - short walk after exiting the ship. Crew assisted with passing out snorkel equipment when boarding the catamaran.  The Fury is rather large - and therefore, lots of passengers - I would estimate at least 50 on our boat. There was lots of shaded seating, and some open seating in the rear. The front of the catamaran had a hard floor - no trampoline to lounge on. This area was occupied by the crew and snorkeling equipment when we boarded and later as a dance floor.

The first part of the excursion was dedicated to snorkeling on a reef a very short ride from the pier. The snorkeling itself was pretty good - TONS of fish and a wide variety. The crew insisted that the entire group stick together and follow the crew member in the water leading with a buoy - the entire time we snorkeled (I would estimate about 20-25 minutes) there was constant yelling to stick together and follow the buoy - got rather annoying. Needless to say, that many people trying to crunch together in a group = trying to avoid being kicked! Dividing the group into smaller groups to go out with a crew member would have helped immensely. The crowd and noise did not seem to affect the fish as they were swimming practically right up to our masks! There was a noticeable current when swimming in one direction, then we turned around and it was a very easy drift back. I had children ages 7 and 11 on this excursion - their first open water snorkel - and they handled it easily. Also, water clarity was excellent!

After the snorkel, the crew opened up the bar which served margaritas, beer, and soda. Nice sail over to the "beach break" on a beautiful beach - again, crystal clear water and no seaweed! Included activities on the beach included kayaks, paddle boards, and numerous inflatable slides/obstacle courses/trampolines in the water. No life jackets were required to be worn but were available. The inflatables were a HUGE hit with our kids!  There were lifeguards on the beach and I also noted staff in the water circling around on a kayak as well as with a snorkel to monitor the water. There was a bar on the beach (included) serving margaritas/beer/soda and there was a grill were you could purchase food. Cannot comment on the menu as we did not utilize. Of note, we were the first Fury to pull in to the beach - shortly followed by 3 other Fury catamarans....was nice having the beach to ourselves for a short time.

After the beach break on the sail back, the crew put on music for line dancing (Macarena, Cotten Eye Joe, Birdie Dance, etc) and recruited everyone to the front to keep the party going.

Overall, we really enjoyed this excursion and would likely repeat it should we return to Cozumel!

Thanks for your review! I've been considering this excursion for my upcoming stop in Cozumel. Did you feel like your snorkel and beach time were adequate? And, did you notice if there sufficient loungers on the beach even after the other 3 catamarans arrived?

Thanks!  Great review.  😎

I wish we had more time snorkeling! But I could stare into the ocean all day 🙂    I was also probably paying more attention to making sure my kids were doing ok than indulging myself, so that ate in to the time I had to gaze under the water!

As far as the beach loungers....I really did not notice. I was in the water the whole time with the kids! They are good swimmers but were not wearing life jackets, and there were blind spots behind the water toys where the water was over their heads...so I felt like I had to keep an eye on them. Maybe in a few years I will be able to relax more!! It was a large beach and there were multiple rows of loungers so I don't think you would have an issue.

We did this excursion in December and enjoyed it. There weren't many people on our excursion which was great when we snorkeled. Although, I thought the place we snorkeled was just OK - only a few fish, but it's nice to be in the water. It ended up storming for a few minutes after the snorkeling as we were heading to the beach. This closed the harbor which then forced them to have to cancel the rest of the trip.

So they turned the boat around, the sun came back out, they cranked up the music, and served us drinks with a full refund! The crew was great and super friendly. Only wish we had made it to the beach. Even without the refund, it's pretty well priced and I would do it again.

DIY Cruising Catamaran: Complete Building Guide

A brand-new cruising catamaran can set you back a hefty amount of money. However, a DIY cruising catamaran provides a more affordable way to own your own boat. While building a large boat can be an extremely challenging and time-consuming experience, nothing beats the pleasure of bringing your own boat to life.

To build a DIY cruising catamaran, buy good design plans, determine your budget and find a working space. Next, choose your hull material, buy supplies and start building the mast beam. Build and sheathe the hull, install bulkheads, the interior, and finally, launch the catamaran boat.

In this article, you will find a complete guide to building your own catamaran. You will also find detailed information on why you may want to consider building your catamaran and approximately how much this project would cost. Finally, we will explore the advantages and disadvantages of building a catamaran from scratch.

Why You Might Want To Build Your Own Catamaran

Most people might think that purchasing a used boat to repair and fix it up would be cheaper than a DIY cruising catamaran. But while building your own catamaran could be an enormous undertaking, it also comes with many advantages over buying something used.

Other than the unique opportunity to create beautiful memories and experiences while cruising, sailing, and exploring beautiful coastlines, there are a number of benefits that come along with the DIY approach.

Knowing Your Boat

Building your own catamaran provides you with intimate knowledge of your boat. You will know every corner, including where to find every bolt, wire, bulkhead, rib, hose, and support as you installed them yourself. This knowledge will enhance your confidence while at sea since you will have entrusted your life to a boat whose history you are aware of and deeply connected to.

Pride of Ownership

The satisfaction you get from crafting something with your own hands is immense. As a result, the knowledge that you built your boat from scratch will fill you with absolute pride and an immense sense of achievement. Furthermore, as an owner-builder, you get to keep and enjoy the boat for as many years as you wish.

Substantial Cost Savings

Building your catamaran will work out cheaper than buying a new or even gently used boat. Though you will likely require some additional labor since doing some things will require an extra pair of hands, if you are particularly good at DIY, you will save a significant amount of money on labor costs as a whole.

Freedom To Create Your Own Designs

If you decide to buy a catamaran boat, it might not be easy to find one that meets your unique needs. However, instead of choosing from production boats that bear traditional and outdated designs, you can come up with an ultra-modern design or style for your catamaran. You also get to pick your layout, size, and equipment based on your taste and budget.

Great Learning Experience

Building your own boat will help you pick up numerous skills that will come in handy later when sailing your boat. As much as you might still require an expert to help you with specialized skills like carpentry or wiring, your new skills will serve you well. This will also be beneficial when it comes to your boat’s maintenance and fixing things for yourself.

What To Look For in Catamaran Boat Designs

When deciding on the type of catamaran boat to build, you may want to choose a design that’s simple and easy to build. This is because doing so will allow you to spend a shorter time building the boat.

You also need to have a set of requirements to guide you in choosing your design or what you might call an ideal cruising catamaran wish list. This is essential because, ultimately, you want to build a boat that offers outstanding qualities such as:

  • Delivers good speed
  • Affordable to own and operate
  • Agile, strong, and easy to maintain
  • Has a high resistance to capsizing
  • Great for sailing and cruising
  • Delivers a comfortable and easy motion underway
  • Good handling ability and high performance under sail
  • User-friendly embarking and disembarking
  • Provides ample living and accommodation space
  • Presents a reasonable resale value

It’s worth noting that, in general, catamaran boats tend to offer a fair resale value mainly because of scarcity and the high price accorded to production models. So, if you build a well-constructed catamaran, you are bound to get a return that’s much higher than the cost of materials upon resale.

It’s also good to consider whether the design you settle on is from an established designer. This is significant because documentation of the building process is just as valuable when it comes to selling the boat.

How Much Would It Cost To Build Your Own Catamaran?

The cost of building your cruising catamaran will depend heavily on the size of the boat you plan to build and the skills you bring to the table. To give you an idea of probable costs, a professionally built 40 foot (12.1 m) long cruising catamaran could go for up to $300,000.

Though building it yourself will undoubtedly be cheaper, most DIY boatbuilders tend to underestimate the expected costs. Your final costs should cover not only the cost of material and equipment but also the labor and time it would take to come up with the final product.

If you were to build a 40-foot (12.1-meter) catamaran, your cost of materials would range between 20-30% of the total cost. Therefore, for $300,000 total, the boat’s materials would range between $60,000 and $90,000. The hull tends to range between 15-35% of the total build. Again, this depends on the finish and furniture.

But before you even start working on the DIY project, you will need to figure out where to do the work. If your home has ample space, then you can opt for a backyard building. But if you live in a small apartment, then you might want to consider renting a small garage at first and then move on to a boatyard later. This is one of the significant costs involved in building your multi-haul.

What You Will Need

To get a clearer picture of how much the entire project would cost, let’s have a look at what else you will need to purchase.

  • Good design plans
  • Working space
  • Ground tackle
  • Matting and roving
  • Equipment such as the engine, windows, rudders, deck fittings, mast, and rigging

In addition to the above, you also need to install plumbing and electricals. You may also want to consider going electric rather than using diesel. Not only will this drastically reduce your maintenance costs, but you get to use the regenerated power for all of your housing needs while sailing.

Some catamaran boat designs help you save costs by advocating the use of less expensive corpus materials. Most of the material goes directly into making the boat, which means there is hardly any wastage on vacuum bagging . With this method, there are few molds and temporal building forms and fewer fillers to grind off as waste. All these factors reduce the time and cost it takes to build your catamaran boat.

That said, building a boat of any kind is a huge financial undertaking. As such, you still need to have the financial ability to keep building; otherwise, your project will stall or take much longer than anticipated. Instead of enjoying yourself and making memories cruising to faraway lands, you might end up spending all your time building a seemingly never-ending boat.

To reiterate, this project is more of a labor of love, given that it involves a tremendous amount of manual work. Calculating an hourly rate on the time spent building the boat and adding this cost to that of materials may make it seem a very pricey exercise. However, it is vital to understand that your time matters, and every hour you spend working for “free” should be included.

With that in mind, you need to ensure that you are fully devoted to the boat construction project and are sure you want to do it before you begin. Stopping halfway because it seems like too much work would be incredibly costly.

How To Build a Catamaran

When it comes to building a cruising catamaran, you have 3 main options:

  • You can buy an old boat and refurbish it.
  • Purchase a bare hull plus deck molding for a home-boat building.
  • Start from scratch and build everything, including the hull, on your own.

As mentioned above, renovating an existing boat may end up being more costly than starting from scratch. To build a catamaran boat from scratch, follow the below step-by-step guide.

Prepare the Essentials

Before you jump into such a large project, there are several important aspects to consider:

  • Buy your plans from an established catamaran designer. You can also get inexpensive, easy-to-build catamaran designs online.
  • Get access to a large working space or build a shed . Depending on your climate, you may need to opt for climate control to avoid an excess of moisture in humid areas.
  • Decide on your choice of hull material. This could be fiberglass, aluminum, steel, wood, or ferroconcrete.
  • Start working on a bill of materials estimate. Include everything that you think you need to get a better idea of the initial costs.

Build the Mast Beam

Using wood and epoxy, cut and glue together the pieces of wood that will form the mast beam. Most of the work at this stage can occur in a garage since it involves building small parts. Still, the work could take up to 4 months, so be prepared to put in long hours.

Build the Boat Hull

Now, it’s time to build the boat’s hull. A catamaran comprises two hulls which are connected with a deck. Below is a short video showing how to build a hull mold:

This work requires a larger facility, so you might need to move out of the garage and into a boatyard. If you don’t have access to a larger workshop, consider building a shed where you can work as you do the construction. Make sure there’s enough room to fit the boat and also allow you to work comfortably. To cover the shed, you can use opaque white tarps.

Sheathe the Hull

Get all the materials you require for this stage in the construction, such as lots of resin, fiberglass, and foam for use in the hull cores. You’ll also require matting and glass roving to sheath the hull .

Sheathing helps to make the hull impervious to water and other marine borers. But first, you need to prepare the hull using a rotary sander. To make it as smooth as possible, use light, sweeping strokes. This is a very dusty task so be prepared to wear a facemask and safety goggles.

Install the Bulkheads

Next is installing the plywood bulkheads . You might need to call in friends to help turn the hulls or use a crane. In this step, you will need to laminate the hull sides on the molded hull panels and bond them above the bulkheads. Ensure the bulkheads are snug and sealed in place.

Construct the Interior Structure

Over the next couple of months, the boat work will involve joining the hulls together with the beams that you had made back in the garage. Then, install the cuddy cabin, decks , and the cockpit . Soon the boat will start to take the shape of a catamaran.

Next, proceed to construct the major structural components such as stairs, hatches, mini-keels, and the interior. Then comes the work of fairing the boat, which is quite labor-intensive.

Finally, it’s time to apply primer on the catamaran boat and start the paintwork. Before painting the boat, you will need to do additional sanding to finish off the two layers of primer as well as fill all the pinholes. Since it’s a large boat, the catamaran has lots of surface area; thus, the sanding could get extremely exhausting—mentally and physically—at this point.

The painting can take a while, too. The hulls are the easiest to paint, but the topsides, non-skid, as well as masking and prepping could seem never-ending.

The final stretch involves working on the center bridge deck cabin and other final touches like installing the engines, electricals, and plumbing. This is also the time to fix the rudders, rigging, mast, windows, and deck fittings.

Launch Your Cruising Catamaran

After many months or years of hard work, your cruising catamaran is finally ready to test the waters. After lowering the boat into the water, check carefully in case there are leaks. If none, you can set up the sails and take your catamaran out for your first cruise.

Below is a short video that takes you through the entire boat-building process:

If you don’t have deep pockets, don’t despair. It’s also possible to build an inexpensive catamaran boat, as shown in this post from the coastal passage .

The Pros of Building a Catamaran

Though it will be a costly endeavor, there are so many things to look forward to should you decide to build your own catamaran:

  • It can be lots of fun.
  • You get to have a new boat.
  • It’s an excellent hobby for DIY enthusiasts.
  • The effort is rewarding.
  • It offers a great learning experience.
  • You get the exact kind of boat you want.
  • You can alter building plans and tailor the boat to suit your specific needs.
  • It might be cheaper than buying a new boat.

The Cons of Building a Catamaran

Though there are a number of positive aspects to a DIY build, it is just as important to keep in mind that it won’t always be easy:

  • Maintenance costs can be quite high.
  • It’s both mentally and physically exhausting.
  • It might require some technical know-how.
  • It can take many months or even years to complete.
  • It requires a lot of commitment to finish the DIY project.
  • It might be challenging as well as expensive to get insurance.
  • You will spend almost all your free time building the boat.

DIY Cruising Catamaran Tips and Tricks

If you are new to boat building, it would be a good idea to build a small boat first. This would give you a good indication as to whether you’d enjoy tackling a more extensive project like building a catamaran. Again, if you are the handy type, fixing your own electronics could also save you a significant amount of money.

Here are more tips and tricks to get the most out of your DIY cruising catamaran:

  • Lower your costs. Bring down your costs even further by sourcing for parts and supplies at marine surplus outlets, Craigslist, eBay, or wholesale suppliers.
  • Enhance your resale value. Most home-built boats are not easy to sell since they tend to be too customized. To enhance your resale value, it’s advisable to work with a standard design from a well-established naval architect.
  • Follow the design instructions. Make sure to follow the designer’s instructions regarding the type of materials and tools to use during the build to avoid making costly mistakes.
  • Maintain your original budget. Avoid any additional customizations once you have started building the boat. Using good plans and sticking to them ensures that your budget doesn’t spiral out of control.

Final Thoughts

Building a catamaran is about more than saving money. It’s fun, exciting, fulfilling, and can be a great learning experience. While it might take many months of back-breaking work, comparative shopping and sourcing for materials will help you save a lot of money. Still, at the end of it all, you’ll have a beautiful catamaran boat, all ready for your first cruising adventure.

However, if you have neither the time nor the energy to build your own catamaran from scratch, refurbishing an existing hull might prove faster and easier. It also works out much cheaper than buying a new boat.

Hello, I am a French Quebecer who is original, imaginative, creative and who finds that all boats and catamarans have a huge flaw and a very big lack of logic. I would have a brand new concept…. I am sending this message to any catamaran creator – designer to make those who have the opportunity and the intelligence to want to know about my innovative idea which will finally upset the market much richer. An idea that will totally change the concept of sailing, navigation and save so much worry!! All I would ask for is a small percentage of each sale of the new product. To be able to make me produce one when I have enough!! It is certain that like that, you just want to tell me: come on Mr. Lessard give us your idea but do not take your word to help me in return! But, if you are the kind of man to have only one word and maybe have a proof of your good faith if the realization of the project would make it… I will be very happy!! Giving it to everyone wouldn’t bother me either…. all I would like is to be able to find flax fiber (too expensive carbon) to be able to try to make my catamaran myself. Because not rich! Have a nice day and looking forward to having a message!!

Seize this unique opportunity to discover some of the famous views of Montenegro, sailing in carefree comfort on stunning Boka Bay .

Step aboard the glamourous Tahi -- a sailing catamaran docked at Kotor's pier. Your sightseeing cruise starts here, and you'll set out on the blue waters of Boka Bay, surrounded by dramatic high cliffs. You're headed across the bay to the famous area of the beautiful Baroque town of Perast and the magical islet of Our Lady of the Rocks with its pretty church.

The catamaran offers panoramic viewing of the islet which, according to legend, was created over the centuries by seamen who kept an ancient oath -- returning from each successful voyage, they laid a rock in the bay, and, over time, the islet gradually emerged from the sea.

Watch for the Porto Montenegro Marina -- the first luxury marina on the Adriatic. Step ashore at the Movida Restaurant & Lounge Club at the Solila Marina, where you can swim at beautiful Solila Beach or simply relax on a sunbed.

Finally, board a motorcoach for a pleasant drive back to the port.

Wear your swimsuit under your clothing; bring a towel, reef-safe/biodegradable sunscreen, light clothing to act as a full cover-up for further protection from the sun, and a hat. Swim at your own risk. Adriatic beaches are typically pebble beaches rather than sand.
