Lagoon 55 review: new iteration remains quintessential cat

34 years on from the original Lagoon 55, the new iteration shows how much catamaran design has evolved towards loft living with a sea view from the terrace. François Tregouet reports

The number 55 holds a special place in the history of Lagoon – it was its inaugural model, launched back in 1987. The 2021 version of the Lagoon 55, still designed by VPLP, is the quintessential modern cruising catamaran according to the world leader in the multihull market. Yachting World was able to hop aboard to measure just how far we’ve come from one millennium to the next.

Legend has it that the first Lagoon 55 was christened Lagoon , and that her owner drew the logo, the now famous palm frond, on a restaurant tablecloth.

After years of sailing on the family’s First 456, she wanted to ‘sail flat and have more space’. Convinced of the advantages of the catamaran, she wanted the silhouette to ‘resemble that of a monohull ’.

Thirty-four years later, three design studios were involved in the creation of the brand-new Lagoon 55, including former Renault chief designer Patrick Le Quément on the exterior design. The imposing topsides deliver taut lines, sculpted bows and a pronounced lower chine to maximise interior living space yet minimise wetted surface area.

A new feature from the Bordeaux-based yard is that the sugarscoop transoms extend beyond the topsides to make access to the boat easier. Once aboard, two steps lead up to the cockpit which is flush-decked with the aft platform. With the mainsheet track now on the bimini the aft beam disappears, freeing up the view and your options for moving around: this is a real terrace on the sea.

Such fluidity of circulation is also to be found in the forward cockpit, no longer ‘dug’ into the foredeck but integrated seamlessly on the same level as the trampoline. With its comfortable seating, two options for sun protection and communication with the interior via the opening front window, this is a completely revised living space.

Command station

Higher up, it seems there’s now no longer a question of whether to have a flybridge on a 55ft cat – it’s a mandatory feature. The optional rigid bimini obviously means the boom is quite a lot higher, compelling the crew to undertake some challenging manoeuvres.

A second access to the flybridge on the starboard side deck, an option not fitted on our test boat, will avoid the need for any further acrobatics. Without it, it’s a long way from the helm to the foredeck via the aft cockpit to, for example, set the Code 0.

These couple of reservations aside, the flybridge has a lot going for it. In addition to the forward and aft sunbathing areas and the outdoor galley, the forward-facing flybridge table and seating is very pleasant – in good weather and moderate wind anyway.

From their position to starboard, the person at the helm has a very good 270° view for manoeuvring off the pontoon and leaving harbour. At the foot of the mast, which has been moved aft in keeping with current trends, all sailing manoeuvres are carried out using three winches. The mainsail is hoisted and the self-tacking genoa unfurled with ease, by a single crewmember.

However, on the day of our test, the Catalan coast was building up a swell, and the wind wasn’t forecast to exceed 9 knots. There was a lack of square metres to our white sails to get the fully-laden 33 tonnes moving forward. So a 154m² Code 0 was quickly unfurled, allowing us to sail at between 5.5 and 6.5 knots with the wind on the beam.

We then bore off under the 272m² asymmetric spinnaker at an average of 5.5 knots before returning upwind (40° to the apparent) at 5 knots. The Lagoon is very easy to handle, and with a little more time – and wind– we might have validated the 8- to 9-knot average speeds claimed by the works crew on their European tour.

Italian influence

The third group to have worked on this version 3.0 of the Lagoon 55 is Nauta Design, who drew the interiors. The joinery and materials are reminiscent of the atmosphere aboard Lagoon’s two big cats, the Sixty 5 and Seventy 7. This illustrates the high-end positioning of the 55, which for the time being tops the manufacturer’s ‘classic’ range.

While the hulls are available with four, five and even six-cabin versions, the layout in the nacelle remains identical. The L-shaped galley on the starboard side is extended by a nice bar unit.

The large U-shaped bench seat simply invites you to settle in comfortably, still with an unrestricted view of the sea. The telescopic table also adapts to suit the use.

There is plenty of stowage space, from floor hatches to bookshelves. In the four-cabin version we tested, the owner’s cabin, aft on the starboard side, enjoys a privileged amount of space, occupying two-thirds of the hull. That said, the guests in the three other cabins have nothing to complain about, each with an en-suite.

Some 20 examples of the original 1987 Lagoon 55 were built but, even ahead of the official launch, its namesake from 2021 has already had more orders – confirmation enough that Lagoon excels in understanding the expectations of today’s sailors. The aesthetics may no longer have much to do with that of a monohull, and the displacement inherent with such volumes doesn’t lend itself to pleasure at the helm, but you have to be impressed by the variety of different spaces available inside and out this catamaran, as well as the level of finish. Ultimately, the design team has succeeded in integrating several big innovations, especially on the exterior. In this sense, the Lagoon 55, 2021 version, is a worthy heir to the original. It sets new standards for ‘Crossing the oceans in comfort and serenity’ as was the ambition stated in the sales brochure... from 1987.

Lagoon Shipyard Over 50 Feet – Bordeaux, France

The Facility

The CNB factory prides itself on a well-defined construction process for each Lagoon catamaran model, ensuring unparalleled quality and customer satisfaction. While there are some key differences between how the 51 and 55 are made compared to the SIXTY and SEVENTY range, they are fairly similar in construction.

This facility has a workforce of approximately 1000 skilled staff, with a representation of approximately 50% females. The staff are dedicated to their expertise and passion to craft these exceptional vessels. Notably, the factory’s emphasis on cleanliness and safety has created a vibrant and contented work environment, ensuring the highest standards of craftsmanship go into every catamaran produced. Lagoon Catamarans

Back in the early days, Lagoon wanted to inject some performance into the catamaran market which was at that time dominated by cruising cats such as Prout , the UK manufacturer and world leader at the time.

Yes, Lagoon Made Fast Cats And so was born the legendary offshore cruising range: the 55, 47, 57, 67 and 67S. In 1995, Lagoon was purchased by Beneteau, one of the leaders in the cruising production monohull market, and the brand’s direction took a turn. They took over the Jeanneau shipyard and handed over the development of the Lagoon range to CNB (Construction Navale Bordeaux).

More Comfort and Space The design brief now became one of more comfort and space while developing innovative construction methods. From 1997 to 2003, Lagoon Catamarans launched a flurry of new designs: the 380, 410, 440, 470, 500 and 570: yachts that remain popular and in demand today. Innovations included the vertical saloon windows on the 410 to maximise living space.

World Leaders It was during this period that Lagoon cemented its position as the market leader in catamaran production, taking over from Prout in the UK which had drifted into financial difficulties.

Commercial Success In 2004, Lagoon launched the legendary 440 with its chunky nacelle (an idea inspired by Prout). This was the first catamaran under 45 feet to be fitted with a flybridge and remains one of Lagoon´s most successful models with 423 hulls produced.

Going Large In 2009, Lagoon started to think big with the launch of the 620 and in 2010 they launched the 450 – their most successful model to date after the 380 and 400 (in terms of units sold). In terms of profit, the 450 probably hit the top spot.

The Fourth Generation In 2012, Lagoon launched the 52 which set the design philosophy going forward. With the mast stepped further back to help short-handed sailing (another Prout trick), she is easy to sail with a small crew despite her size: the self-tacking jib takes care of itself and the mainsail is relatively easy to manage for a 50-foot boat (especially with an electric winch).

They followed this in 2016 with the Lagoon 42 and a whole range of sizes on either side (40, 46, 50).

The Fifth Generation In 2017, they took another design leap with the launch of the Seventy 7, followed by the Lagoon 65 (SIXTY 5) and the 55 in 2021. Then came the 51, the 60 and the 43.

Lagoon celebrated the launch of its 7,000th catamaran in 2024. This compares to Fountaine Pajot, with around 4,000 units since 1976, and South Leopard, with about 2,500 built over the past two decades.

Lagoon – All of the Catamarans

Lagoon 55, 57, Lagoon 57S (1984)

The 55 was Lagoon’s original design and what a way to launch a brand! They later offered an extended version: the 57. Along with the 47 and the 67, these yachts remain very popular – classic performance catamarans from Lagoon’s early days. Lagoon built 20 55s and 14 57s I believe.

The Very First 55 was Called “Lagoon” And do you where Lagoon got their brand name from? Well, the first 55 the company built was called “Lagoon”.

The fledgling catamaran manufacturer decided to develop develop a brand, but they needed a name. One name that kept coming back to them was the name that their first customer gave to her 55: “Lagoon”.

They signed an agreement on the corner of the table in a restaurant, a contract on a napkin to provide royalties if they managed to sell any more boats. Luckily (for Lagoon), they set a time limit of 10 years. The rest is history!”

The 57S evolved as a Sport version built with carbon and Kevlar reinforcements making them more rigid. At 16.9 m long and 9.2m wide they are very stable and seaworthy. Lightweight is 17 tonnes.

Lagoon 42 (1991)

The smallest of the older performance designs from pre-Beneteau days, the Lagoon 42 was launched with the 37 to appeal to buyers with more modest budgets. They were built in the USA by the shipyard Tillotson Pearson Inc. She was a real success for Lagoon thanks to her ample living space and seaworthiness.

An example is OZ, a 1995 L42 TPI hull #49.

Lagoon 37 (1991)

Following the Lagoon 55 and 57, Lagoon moved to make their catamarans more accessible to a wider market:  the Lagoon 42 and Lagoon 37 were launched in the nineties and 41 were built in the USA by Tillotson Pearson Inc. Composite, a pioneer in the composite infusion process. The Moorings rebranded the Lagoon 37 as the Moorings 3700.

The Lagoon 37 was launched at the end of 1992. With a powerful sail plan for its size, this comfortable catamaran is pretty nippy. 43 Lagoon 37 hulls were built by TPI in the States. Following that, production moved to France. They built 8 in France I believe before they they launched the 410 and  470. The French-built 37s have smaller windows in the saloon and aluminum toe rails.

Lagoon 47 (1992)

One of the Lagoon catamarans with a turn of speed from Jenneau days, the 47 is still sought after on the second-hand market. This boat is now seen as something of a classic (along with her larger sisters, the 57 and 67). With her twin aft helms and ample living space, this was a very successful model from the early Lagoon days.

Lagoon 35 (1995)

Along with the 37 and 42, the 35 was built by TPI in the US. This was the least successful model of the range with only eleven units built. She was designed by Morrelli and Melvin who later went on to design the early Gunboats.

Lagoon 67, 67S (1995)

If you have been following Katamarans for a while, you’ll know that the Lagoon 67 is one of our favourite catamaran designs of all time. How did they design such a perfect boat so early on? We struggle to think of a prettier-looking catamaran.

The 67 was launched in 1995 as a semi-custom catamaran. One “sporty 67S” was built: with a bigger rig, taller carbon mast, carbon bridge deck, and structural bulkheads in carbon.

Lagoon 410 (1997)

The Lagoon 410 was the first in the new series of designs after the brand was bought by Beneteau and they veered towards comfort over performance.

Compared to the sportier Lagoon 42, VPLP made this boat roomier inside and put the saloon on a level with the cockpit (pretty innovative at the time). The keels were made fuller, with more volume on the ends of the hulls to reduce pitching. The 410 was made wider to improve lateral stability, safety and volume. They reduced the size of the main and increased the size of the jib with the same overall sail area.

Now a classic catamaran, with a legion of fans and still very popular on the second-hand market. They built 283 of them, a very successful model.

Lagoon 410 S2 Brochure (2005)

Lagoon 470 (1998)

The 470 was VPLP’s updated design of the 47 after the company veered more towards comfort. But in these early days, they didn’t stray too far from the performance heritage of the brand, so the 470 moves well too with a powerful sail plan. The big change to the profile was those vertical saloon windows that opened up the space inside.

At 10 knots displacement, she will still get moving in lighter air if you get the gennaker up.

The early 470s into 2000 were built on a 47 hull with the newer 470 cabins. In later years, the hulls became beamier and a foot longer with more freeboard. Thanks to the Lagoon Owner’s Group on Facebook for the information. In total, 51 were built.

Lagoon 380 (1999)

One of the most successful Lagoon catamaran models of all time in terms of sales, no question. Read our full Lagoon 380 review for the full low down on why this is such a great little boat. It just hits the sweet spot on so many levels for its price point and size and remains a strong seller on the second-hand market. It´s the Prout Snowgoose of the Noughties, a classic catamaran.

Lagoon 570 (2000)

The 570 is to the 57 what the 470 is to the 47, if you catch my drift. This was the updated design of the performance classic following the purchase of Lagoon by Beneteau, and while VPLP moved the design dial towards more space and comfort with the now trademark vertical saloon windows, for example, they didn´t move it that far. You get a nice balance with this boat.

This is not a boat that is that easy to sail short-handed though. Lagoon has made this easier and easier on their more recent larger boat designs, but this was still pretty early days for the company.

Lagoon 440 (2004)

The Lagoon 440 has the trademark vertical panoramic saloon windows with a centered flybridge which positions the helm up high. This was a brave step in 2004 and a precursor to the 450- one of Lagoon´s most successful models.

The hulls are voluminous with mid-sized keels. Like many Lagoons, the hulls and cabin below the waterline are solid epoxy laminate while the topsides are a composite cored sandwich of fiberglass, epoxy, and balsa.

With all that space freed up with the flybridge helm, she delivers on space down below. Another innovation that has proved to be very popular is the foredeck lounge area for those Sundowners at anchor. The Lagoon 440 is still very popular on the second-hand market. They built 423 of them.

Lagoon 500 (2005)

If Lagoon invented the cruising cat flybridge concept on the 440, the 500 maxed it to the full. This cat handles chop well and powers along in a reach in a breeze, but visibility forward can be difficult from that helm up top when you have the big jib set. Lagoon built 150 of this model.

Lagoon 420 (2006), 421 (2009)

The 420 was unashamedly built for comfort with its bulky coachroof and high freeboard. It was a gamble that paid off, as this was a successful seller. The Market research was correct in this case, and 179 hulls were built.

In 2009, they updated the model into the 421 with more sail area: these are the ones to look out for if you are snooping around the second-hand market. The original boat was sluggish under 12 knots of wind- the 421 improved its performance in this regard. 96 hulls were produced.

The overall hull height was lowered and the sail area increased by around 4sqm. Changes were made to the hulls aft below the waterline to ‘improve hydro dynamic efficiency’. Source: Thks to noshoes-resoled .

The Lagoon 420 and 421 offer big comfort for their size thanks to the volume in the nacelle and spacious cabins. A dependable long-term comfortable cruising boat. Check out our Lagoon 421 For Sale page if you are looking for one of these cruising catamarans on the second-hand market.

Lagoon 620 (2009)

With the 620, we are getting to the Big Lagoon Catamarans and this means plenty of options for customisation. At 62 feet, you can go for as many as five double cabins with island berths or as few as three. The galley can be up or down which again gives you plenty of scope to develop an individual design.

Head upstairs onto the flybridge, and you´ll notice that she has 2 helms and the aft cabins have direct access to the exterior.

Lagoon 400 (2009)

With a square-topped mainsail to boost the sail area, the 400 is a very competent sailor as long as you don’t try and pinch her too close to the wind, and she tacks well. The basic structure consists of a solid laminate under the waterline with a balsa core above, including the decks.

The hulls and decks are infused with polyester, and Lagoon layers vinylester resin onto the hulls to protect against osmosis.

In 2012 Lagoon launched a refreshed design (interior upgrade mostly) called the Lagoon 400 S2.

I have heard from the Lagoon Owner’s Facebook Group that the 400 is probably #2 in terms of units sold behind the 380 with almost 1000 produced. Makes sense. I think the 40 and 42 are catching up fast.

Lagoon 450 (2010)

One of Lagoon’s most successful models to date, with over 800 units sold. Only the 380 beats that, and in terms of profit, the 450 is probably their number 1 boat I would guess.

The Lagoon 450 came in two flavours: the 450F Flybridge and the 450S Sport (bulkhead helm). The Sport version has a lower boom. You will seem more flybridge examples about.

Lagoon 560 (2010)

A top-selling 50-footer. In 2017, Lagoon announced the #100 hull.

Lagoon 52F (2012) and 52S (2015)

The Lagoon 52 came in Sport Top version (52S) and Flybridge (52F). This is “only” a 52-footer, but inside it feels huge. If you go for the flybridge option, even more so, she’s luxury at anchor at its best.

The new look is more angular and muscly with a mast position that has been positioned aft bringing benefits in both performance and handling. The high aspect mainsail keeps the canvas high where the breeze is most steady and the shorter boom is easier to control when short-handed. With her large self-tacking genoa she moves nicely.

On the flybridge, the Lagoon 52F has oodles of space with a central helm that pivots to port or starboard to improve visibility when sailing or docking.

Lagoon 39 (2013)

Well, we all thought that the 39 was going to take over from the 380, didn’t we? But it never really happened. I am not sure why because this is a good-looking boat that performs reasonably well and is easy to sail, but everyone just kept continuing to order the 380 and it never took off.

She carries about the same sail area as the 380 but is significantly heavier at 11.6 tonnes. That’s probably the main reason.

Lagoon 42 (2016)

The Lagoon 42 overtook the 380 in 2023 and become Lagoon’s most successful model to date. In October 2023 they delivered the 1000th Lagoon to French owners who joined them to celebrate in Cannes.

They seem to have nailed the performance/comfort equation with this boat. As well as having plenty of living space, she moves well.

Upwind, like most Lagoons, she will be happiest sitting at around 60 to true. You might just squeeze in some 110-degree tacks, but she should shunt along at 7 knots or so in a breeze heading upwind. The 42 is a solid cruising catamaran. This is a large 42-footer!

Lagoon 50 (2017)

This design was developed from the bottom up by VPLP and Patrick Le Quement. She continues with the current trend of setting the mast further aft for a shorter boom and mainsail that is easier to handle.

The deck plan has been completely rethought versus her predecessors and she feels spacious.

Lagoon Seventy 7 (2017)

The WOW factors keep coming with this boat with its balcony off the master suite, jacuzzi on the flybridge and the new sleek profile. If you want to live the high life, there are worse ways of doing it than on a Lagoon Seventy 7.

Lagoon 40 (2018)

The Lagoon 40 is the current entry-level model for the French manufacturer since they stopped production of the 380.

This is a worthy successor to the 400 that incorporates many of the features that you will see on the 42, albeit in a smaller package. The 40 will undoubtedly become one of Lagoon’s top-selling models.

The mast is further aft than the 400 (in keeping with all of the newer designs), so you have a more powerful jib and a mainsail that is easier to handle. She’s a neat-looking catamaran. At 10 tonnes, she is no lightweight, but Lagoon knows its market, and that means decent enough sailing performance and maximum comfort for her length.

Lagoon 46 (2019)

This pretty 46-footer, launched in 2019, replaces the 450: pretty big shoes to fill! You can read our full Lagoon 46 review here. It´s a great evolution from the popular 440 and 450 models.

In August 2023 they delivered the 500th 46 to Australian customers.

Lagoon Sixty 5 (2020)

The Sixty 5 is not quite the Lagoon flagship, but she’s almost! This is another foray into the Supercat market which Sunreef dominates. Lagoon is starting to snap at their heels with these Big Cats.

With 32 feet or 10m of beam, the Sixty 5 has about 1,500 square feet of living, deck and bridge space. The cockpit is enormous, the saloon as well, the galley looks straight out of a Manhattan apartment and the flybridge area tops it all off for cocktails or even a dinner party (when you´re not sailing). Add the lounging area at the front of the boat and you have a serious entertainment platform.

Choose between five or six cabins. The fully battened mainsail and furling genoa, add up to 268m2, which will power the Lagoon Sixty5’s 40 tonnes of light displacement. Along with her bigger sister, the Sixty 5 has a new sleek profile while retaining all of those trademark Lagoon features like the vertical windows. You can see these design cues will filter down to the smaller boats in time.

Lagoon 55 (2021)

The Lagoon 55 was the first model that Lagoon launched in 1984.

37 years later, we have the new Lagoon 55 which is somewhat different! This boat represents almost 4 decades of development and design evolution from this famous French catamaran manufacturer.

Lagoon 51 (2022)

The flybridge takes up 80% of the roof space on this comfortable cat with 2 big sun loungers forward of the helm and a huge C-shaped sofa behind.

The central table telescopes down to create another large sunbathing area. Aft, the Lagoon 51 has large and wide transoms for ease of access at the dock and with the “Tenderlift” platform, the whole area converts into a large balcony or bathing platform on the sea.

There is an option to install up to 3,400W of solar on this cruising catamaran.

Lagoon 60 (2024)

Lagoon announced a new model at the Cannes International Yachting Festival in 2023, the 60. The aft terraces open out, opening up the access from shore and increasing the living space at anchor.

Reviewed: Lagoon Sixty 7 Powercat

Oftentimes, powercats end up looking like wedding cakes. They start wide at the base and narrow with each successive level. Making them look good is a real challenge.

All credit, then, to Lagoon’s regular preferred creative partners, automotive-design legend Patrick Le Quément and VPLP, which respectively take the bows for exterior design and naval architecture on the Lagoon Sixty 7. It’s a catamaran that manages to unite elegance and functionality.

The Sixty 7 and its sailing sistership, the Sixty 5, replace the outgoing Lagoon 630 Motor Yacht and Lagoon 620. Around 80 of the 630s were built from 2012 through this past January, and around 170 of the 620s were delivered in the 10 years since its 2009 debut.

Usable space is the key evolution from old models to new. Lagoon says the new-generation cat designs deliver around 30 percent more floor area inside and outside. The flybridge alone adds about 40 square feet or so of alfresco lounge space below a hardtop with a sunroof. But check out the foredeck: A seating area connects to the salon via a 12-millimeter-thick glass door, making the forward end of the yacht an integral part of the living area.

A two-person sofa is just outside the salon door, and up three steps is an open deck for movable furniture, beanbag chairs and the like. Lagoon has an exclusive range of stand-alone items from the Belgian outdoor-furniture company Tribù, which is responsible for most of the other furniture aboard. And if music’s your thing, then make sure to tick the box for the optional Waterfall Audio sound system; the clarity is unbelievable.

Given the yacht’s volume, the Sixty 7 is surprisingly nimble in turns, and the driving ergonomics couldn’t be much better at the main console in the salon or up on the flybridge. The displays are all from Simrad. A leaning post is standard at the lower helm, and a seat is optional.

The biggest difference between the power and sail versions of this yacht are the diesels and fuel tanks. The sail version has twin 150 hp Volvo Penta D3s. The powercat has more than twice the oomph: either twin 340 hp Volvo Penta D6s or twin 440 hp Yanmar 6LYs. Cat buyers—whether opting for rigs or no rigs—mostly choose the most powerful engine option.

With the Yanmar diesels, 32 percent fuel, 40 percent water and nine people aboard, the Sixty 7 we ran in the Mediterranean topped 21 knots flat out, which means 3,350 rpm and a total fuel burn of almost 48 gph, or 30 hours’ worth of run time. Acceleration from rest to top speed took around 35 seconds. Not bad numbers for something moving through the water with space comparable to a $5 million, 3,000-square-foot Manhattan apartment.

Slow the yacht to a constant 2,000 rpm and 12 knots, and allowing for a 10 percent reserve, owners can plan on 1,200 nautical miles between fuel pumps. Speed up to a 14-knot fast cruise, and that range gets cut in half. Fuel capacity on the powercat version is 1,452 gallons across four tanks, two in each hull.

Generated from a three-piece mold tool, the Sixty 7′s hulls are slightly longer and flatter aft than those on the sail version because the extra weight of engines and fuel adds approximately 18,300 pounds to the yacht’s displacement. The Sixty 7 powercat draws less too: just 3 feet, 10 inches.

Nauta Design handled interiors. Three principal veneer choices are available: walnut, light oak and gray oak. Accommodations options are modular. Combinations from four to six staterooms are possible, although one sleeping space would normally be specified for crew.

The Lagoon Sixty 7 I got aboard had four double-berth staterooms, including a master in the after half of the starboard hull with a sofa, separate shower and head stalls, and a private entrance aft. The galley and crew mess were in the after half of the port hull. There’s also the option of a galley at main-deck level, but the first four Sixty 7s were sold with the galley down; the fifth will get the galley-up layout.

The Lagoon Sixty 7 has visual appeal, the volume of a house, and the range to cruise the Eastern Seaboard almost nonstop with accommodations for a large cruising family. Sometimes, you can have your cake and eat it too.

I believe that catamarans are the way to go, but which brand should you go with? Today I have chosen a little bit different perspective on how to evaluate the best catamaran brands.

Leopard, Nautitech, and Catana are some of the best cruising catamaran manufacturers. They offer safe and easy to handle cats with impressive speeds. Leopard boasts the best family-friendly vessels, Antares is environment friendly, and Nautitech offers impressive performance.

If you’re ready to buy yourself a high-end cruising catamaran, read on. Prepare yourself to spend some money and land the life of your dreams. Pack your sunscreen, lean back, and relax—adventure is on its way!

1. Best for Families: Leopard Catamarans

As a fine example of build quality, we have the Leopard 48 , which has an excellent design and great handling. The brand is also known for pushing the standards of catamarans well past industry norms.

Leopard catamarans are known for being very sturdy and great oceangoing vessels

This sturdiness and high build quality have made leopard a somewhat pricier alternative than, let’s say, lagoon. But as we have come to learn the recent years (with bulkhead problems on the Lagoons), this price increase is probably something that you will save in the long run anyway.

Looking at the Leopard 42 above, we can see that comfort and space are offered in plenty; there are also other versions, but the most common is for the owner to make their own modifications suiting their specific needs.

2. Best Racing-Cruising Experience: Outremer

Even though Outremers haven’t built nearly as many cats as Leopard they definitely have managed to build a reputation equally as strong. Outremer, even though low in production numbers, comes in 2nd place in this poll of the best catamaran brand.

When you first look at Outremer’s website , you’ll see the words:

For many this is true, for those of you who follow the youtube channel La Vagabond, they have an Outremer 45 and beautifully showcase how this vessel operates in all types of conditions.

Outremer is famous for continually improving and producing high-performance cruising catamarans in the ranges of 45 to 55ft. This can be seen by their after sales reputation which is said to be next to none.

Outremer also has an interesting perspective on being environmentally friendly, just read this quote from outremer’s commercial director:

“If you can sail at 5kts, you can sail 95% of the time” Matthieu Rougevin-Baville

Slow windspeed sailing is a priority for Outremer, this means less motoring, less noise, less pollution and opens up for better electric propulsion alternatives?

3. Best Customer Experience: Lagoon

Online shopping for catamarans can be complicated, but when it comes to Lagoon , they make sure you can easily navigate to find the right boat for you. The front page advertises their newest additions along with an educational blog.

When you go shopping, Lagoon reminds you that delivery may be difficult due to the recent pandemic. However, they are committed to making sure you’re still able to enjoy your experience. Their cat variety is nice, but the features are even better.

Lagoon even has something called Club Lagoon, which provides extra benefits, including privileged events and personalized meetings. The main goal of Lagoon is to establish a friendly experience with its buyers. It’s quite clear that Lagoon sees you as more than just a customer. 

Lagoon has come in some bad weather for the bulkhead issues of the L450, but to be fair this is only one model of many ever produced. Lagoon still stands as one of the top catamaran manufactures in the world.

They make sure that you feel comfortable and prove they care about you, not just your money. So, if you’re ready for a friendly experience, go with Lagoon!

4. Best Overall Experience: Fountaine Pajot

Fountaine Pajot states that their boats are designed for the best living space to provide comfort to help you enjoy the cruising experience the right way.

With features such as sunbathing areas, well-designed kitchens, comfortable cabins, Italian-style bathrooms, and more, this brand clearly focuses on making sure you get the best experience. So, if you’re looking to sit back and let the boat speak for itself, get a Fountaine Pajot. Remember that your comfort is their number one priority. 

5. Best Reviews: Catana Catamarans

Much like the Nautitech, Catana designs their cat with a somewhat more open and “unprotected” helm oftentimes seen in racing, this allows for great visibility but can be stressful on the crew during long passages.

Catana remains one of the fastest production catamarans out there and you got to love their slogan:

Everywhere you look, on Youtube, websites, or talking to owners, almost all of them love the Catana, some might not favor the helm position (but usually those are people who haven’t actually sailed a Catana) but all love the general feel and look of the boat.

The Catana is one the highest praised catamarans that I have researched but for some reason this doesn’t reflect in the poll.

6. Best Performance: Nautitech

Nautitech has a variety of catamarans such as the 40 Open, the 46 Open, the 46 Fly, the 54, and the 47 Power.

The 46 Open has a reputation for its unique experience with great safety and luxurious interiors. As for the 46 Fly, it’s best known for its revolutionary flybridge on a sailing cat.

According to their website , Nautitech is known as a brand that keeps in touch with the living at sea experience, all while providing immense comfort.

Nautitech was the first to create the idea of “open living” onboard by combining the saloon and cockpit into a large and functional living space. After all, their catchphrase on the opening page is “elevate your dreams.” 

While they focus on comfort, the might behind it all sets it apart from other companies. With 200 employees producing 80 boats per year, you would almost assume the quality wouldn’t be as good. That’s where you’d be wrong. It operates at the perfect speed so you and your friends or family can enjoy ocean life.

So, if you want a catamaran with comfort and exciting history, get ready to sail with Nautitech. 

7. Best Semi-Custom: Privilege Catamarans

Make no misstake these are not bad boats, but they are somewhat more rare to be seen and as such numbers will always lean towards the more common brands.

If you know what you want it’s a pretty high likelihood that privilege will be able to construct it for you, the brand is known as the midway between custom and production cats. Bringing benefits from both worlds into its own genre of boats.

The list of customizations is impressive and I would be surprised if you didn’t find what you were looking for, just remember, with custom boats comes custom problems , so maybe with semi-custom boats, you get semi-custom problems?

In some ways, this model is the opposite of let’s say Lagoon 380, which has hundreds of identical vessels and a large community of people around it.

Privileges are usually not the fastest cats out there, but if you are prepared to give up a little bit of speed you will most definitely enjoy sailing in great comfort on this masterpiece.

8. Best For Environment: Antares Catamarans

When it comes to vacations, you want to relax, but you still need to focus on safety, and Antares takes that cruising aspect seriously. If you decide to buy a catamaran from Antares (here´s a buyers guide ), you will find that they recommend you “get to know” your boat.

Antares is known for building blue-water capable vessels that are sturdy and excellent for liveaboards.

With a brand new design that focuses not only on space and comfort but also on bringing modern technology onboard and making it environmentally friendly, it’s clear that Antares wants the best experience for its cruisers and for the planet.

They redesigned the electrical system to create a diesel hybrid so you can cruise without having to worry about running low on battery power, all while doing your part in protecting the planet.

Something that is all too common on cruising cats is their poorly sized battery and electrical system making cruisers more often than necessary rely on the genset. With 1800w of solar panels, this is no longer an issue.

A few of their great features include a lightweight cherry wood interior, Corecell construction, and superior steering. This company clearly stands for comfort, relaxation, and safety.

Bonus Boat: Most Popular For Coastal Sailing, Gemini Catamarans

For nearly three decades, their Gemini 105mc has been the most popular catamaran ever built (measured by number of units sold).

According to the website , the Gemini 105mc surprises newcomers with its legendary performance. I would take this with a grain of salt, or two, or maybe a bucket full.

Although Geminis aren’t as beautiful or fast as the other cats on this list, they are much cheaper and smaller . Some Geminis even fit inside a regular monohull slip which will save you tons of money in marina fees.

These are no bluewater I-am-going-to-sail-the-world type of boats, but they are perfect for coastal and inshore cruising whether it be a weekend or full-on liveaboard.

When it comes to their new catamaran line-up, they have the Hull 1227, Hull 004, Hull 012, Hull 106, and the Hull 1223. While the prices may still be high, they offer discounts, and they recently announced they’d have price drops.

The popular Gemini 105mc that has been a legacy since 1981. It’s spacious, light, and airy .

Another interesting model is the Gemini Legacy 35 . While it’s not as popular as the Gemini 105mc, it still has some unique features.

They also have the Gemini Freestyle 37 , which is best known for its flexibility. It can be tailored as a basic family catamaran, day-charter boat, or for single-handed sailing . It also has a low starting price and can be tailored to suit all of your needs for the perfect cruising vacation.

In addition, they have the Gemini Freestyle 399 Power . It’s essentially a power version of the Gemini Freestyle 37. This new catamaran includes several storage areas, comfortable cabins, a vanity unit, a lounge area with seating for up to six people, and air conditioning. 

This would be the perfect catamaran for a group of friends or family on a weekend sail.

Bonus Boat: Best Affordability, Manta

This fantastic brand has eight different models that range from coastal to offshore cruising.

Mantas are one of my favorite boats, but as soon as they show up for sale, they are gone.

There is also a Manta owners club which doesn’t seem to be very active at the moment as far as I can tell.

Final Thoughts

As we’ve seen, the best cruising catamaran brands focus on comfort just as much as they focus on safety. With luxurious experiences and tons of opportunities to relax while also experiencing the adventure of a lifetime, who wouldn’t want to cruise away?

Best Catamarans Over 50 Feet

All kinds of high-end luxury sailing you could ever imagine can be experienced on Catamarans Over 50 Feet. It just depends on the boat at hand. Why spend your holiday cruising or liveaboard on a monohull when comfortable catamarans exist?

A catamaran is quite different from a regular monohull. Catamarans are typically designed with two equal-sized hulls and derive their stability from their wide beam; unlike a one-hulled boat deriving stability from a loaded undersurface.

The average catamaran is 38-47 feet in size. Usually, they are equipped with four large cabins with double or queen-sized beds, each cabin having an in-suite head. These vessels, originally designed for fishing, have, over the years, evolved and have become very popular in recent years. Lately, many boatbuilders are focusing more and more on building large catamarans over 50 feet as more and more people are starting to liveaboard and put more emphasis on comfort and luxury than their sailing performance.

In 2011, the biggest catamaran ever was built by Pendennis Shipyard in the UK, at 145 feet in length! It is equipped with a trampoline, a jacuzzi and can accommodate 12 guests in 5 cabins. This boat is designed to accommodate all the luxuries and adornments that can be found on a watercraft.

Here are the best sailing catamarans over 50 feet, in no particular order.

Price: From $500k to $1.5 Million USD On the Used Market

Back in 2019, the Lagoon 50 was awarded the best multihull of Sail Magazine. A product of the world’s largest boat manufacturer Lagoon, established in 1984, is majorly famous for the design and construction of cruising catamarans, which infuse top-notch designs, upscale comfort, and great sailing performances to one’s boating experience. Every detail is carefully thought out to establish novel and spacious architecture with a homely ambiance.

It’s a perfect balance between the model Lagoon 450 and the lofty 52. The Lagoon 50 has an encompassing view, generous volumes with a self-tacking jib, and a shorter mast for easily simplified maneuvers. It has two cockpits, one large one facing the sea and the other for seating at foredeck or on a deck chair. The hulls being large enough to contain more than 2 cabins, you can have up to six cabins. Italian agency Nauto Design Studio set a standard for their innovative interior designs every time. This vessel boasts of a unique brand signature, providing increased performance and a detailed wood finish to be fitted for the owner. Unconventional lines are linked with luxury, versatility, and a layout of technical options to cater to everyone’s needs.

Looking for something contemporary and luxurious? Lagoon 52 takes the cake in that way. This boat signified a new stage in the design of cruising catamarans. The Lagoon 52 is a product of the prolonged conversations between Lagoon’s customary VPLP, Nauto design agency, and the Lagoon design department. It comes in two versions: The Lagoon 52 FlyBridge, known as Lagoon 52F, and Lagoon 52 SporTop.

The combination of onboard comfort with its sailing performance is perfect and in sync. The wide side decks allow easy movement onboard. The cockpit and saloon also offer spacious living areas. The vertical bows of the boat have a diamond-shaped appearance with diagonal shaped hull and a lifting deck house.

The boat is easily accessible and safe thanks to the open rear skirts. Most of the features in this luxurious watercraft can be found in the aforementioned Lagoon 50. It has a perfect blend for its easy use, a comfy, elegant interior, amazing space, and lighting. You’re sure to get your money’s worth with the LAGOON 52.

Privilege Series 5

Price: Around $1-1.5 Million USD

At 50 feet, this boat is quite marvelous and a privilege to spend your time in as a cruiser or owner. The Privilège Series 5 is the world’s first 50 feet sailing catamaran. This vessel was built by Privilège Marine, a French company based in Les Sables-d’Olonne, France. They are famous for building premium luxury catamarans and designed by French Naval Architect Marc Lombard. The Privilège Series 5 is equipped with three or four double and a full-sized owner’s cabin located in the yacht’s center. It’s a lightweight boat at 48500 pounds and could go up to 52900 depending on the size.

It has great customization options, and it can be designed to suit the boat owner’s taste. The attention to detail on the boat is nothing short of perfection as the interior design, woodwork, safety measurements laid out by the boat’s design, aesthetics, ventilation, etc., was thought out good. The vessel’s finishing is really phenomenal as everything has a high level of craftsmanship.

Leopard 50L

Length: 50 Ft 6 In

Price: Around $1 Million USD

The Leopard 48, which was launched in 2012, was one of the most popular cruising cats ever designed. But the design was beginning to become dated, even as new orders kept coming in. So, Robertson & Caine, who build the Leopard cats, set out to improve on what was already great. The new 50 was their answer and comes with many innovations that will make owners happy. We test sailed the 50L last winter in Florida. The L version has the optional lounge on top of the hardtop over the cockpit. Unlike some cats with flying bridges and lounges up high, the 50L doesn’t feel like a layer wedding cake.

The steering station is a traditional raised helm to starboard, and the lounge is just up a few stairs from there. The helmsman is in contact with those in the main cockpit and those in the lounge. Out sailing, we got the 50L up to 10 knots in a good breeze, so the boat is fast. It is also commodious and will make a very comfortable home for a family or a charter party.

Length: 58 Feet

Price: From $450k To $1.5 Million on the Used Market

Leopard 58 is a superb layout from Leopard, skilfully modeled by award-winning designers Robertson & Caine. This extravagant catamaran is suited to the prolific and innovative catamarans that have made Leopard famous while still giving out fresh features and various design options.

This expansive FlyBridge takes space to a whole new dimension as it is larger than its siblings with their award-winning aspects. A Flybridge is basically a version of catamarans that affords you the luxury of outdoor space, come rain or shine. Leopard 58 is more about space, bragging about 750 square feet in just the saloon alone. It gives you amazing comfort and is naturally luminous. With an open plan layout, the galley available means the meal making and interaction will be easy. Highly recommended for a family outdoor gathering.

Price: Around $1 Million USD New ; Not many options on the used market since its a newer model

Popularly called the Seawind 52 because of its 52 feet size. The Seawind 52′ 1600 is designed by world-renowned architects Reichel Pugh. Like the Lagoon 52, it’s a perfect balance for onboard comfort and performance sailing and sea safety. Perfect for sailors or boat lovers who are looking for a little extra.

This catamaran sets a standard for offshore sailing because of its simple sailing methods, large open cockpit space, and twin protected helms. Equipped with a three or four-cabin design that affords the owner’s cabin expansive living space, great storage, high aspect riders, daggerboards, an elegant fit/finish, and infused carbon-reinforced construction.

Seawind 1600

Price: Around $1 Million USD New

The new Seawind 1600 has been in the works for a while and has finally arrived on the market. The Reichel Pugh design is a departure from the more conservative looks of the other Seawinds and embraces a very Euro-style with plumb bows, hard chines, a swept-back cabin, and a large open cockpit with helm stations on both sides. The boat is a pure performance cruiser that was conceived as a blue water voyaging boat for a family. At 52 feet, it falls within the size range that an experienced couple can handle, so it would make a great platform for a couple to explore the world. The 1600 like all of the Seawinds and Corsairs, are built in Vietnam.

Nautitech 542

Length: 54 Feet

Price: Around $1.2 Million USD New

Nautitech 542 is the typical example of offshore meeting first class. This boat has ideally tweaked fittings for smooth sailing under any circumstances. Furnished with a single wheel on its roof for perfect views of the boat and a comfy 2-person seat. The idea of this boat is mostly based on performance and quality. Asides from the positions of the helm, Nautitech 541 and 542 are very similar. Nautitech 542 is large and luxurious. The sail controls at the helm stations for easy sailing maneuvers and perfect for all weather conditions. The interior was designed by French designer Franck Darnet. Equipped with state of the art furniture and cabin experience, a sleek experience is assured.

Xquisite X5

Length: 51 Feet

Price: Around $1.5 Million USD

Once you have met your first Xquisite X5, you will never forget its absolute distinctive looks and almost space-traveling styling. The whole look of the boat, with its large reverse curving arches and cat’s eye windows, says right out loud that you need to pay attention. The boat itself is a very modern design with a classic and comfortable interior. It sails better than most of its peers in the 50-foot range and is set up cleverly so one watchstander can hand, reef, and steer all from the protected comfort of the raised steering station. Tomas and Sara, who build the boats in South Africa, are veteran cruisers and owned hull number one of the X5 line before taking over the company. Their attention to detail and the innovations they have incorporated into the boats all stem from their time living aboard and blue water sailing.

Privilege 615

Length: 61 Feet

Price: From $800k to $1.3 Million USD on the Used Market

When it comes to onboard luxury, Marc Lombard, who designed this catamaran, is an expert in that field. This lovely boat is in touch with the latest style, sporting a flybridge complete with two wheels and a broad sunbed suitable for the crew to relax the day away. The 615 is a combination of simplistic and superior design with an outstanding crew, results in the ultimate luxury Caribbean cruising experience. The impeccable elegance of the interior with a lavish owner’s suite and the boat’s perfect wood quality are two great reasons to make you get the boat. The freedom to choose a four or five-double cabin is another, depending on the size of the family.

Followed closely by its outstanding exterior, you’re sure to fall in love with it on sight, from the cockpit to the foredeck. With an impressive platform and lustrous profile, the Privilède 615 contradicts the volume and versatility of its interior. One wonders how they fit into the other, gives it a great ambiance.

Balance 526

Length: 52ft 6in

Price: From $1.3 to $1.6 Million USD New

Multihull impresario, dealer, and broker Phil Berman (The Multihull Company) has sold more multihulls over the last 30 years than just about anyone. His latest project has been the development of the Balance line of performance cruising cats. The queen of the line is the Balance 526 that was introduced a few years ago and has proven to be a very successful player in the 50-foot plus segment of the cat market. Built in South Africa by noted composite experts, the 526 offers a well-conceived combination of great sailing performance and luxury living in a boat that can be handled by an experienced couple.

The boat has plenty of innovations, among them a helm that can be tilted up so you can steer from the raised helm station or tilted down so you can steer from the protection of the cockpit. Very cool. The design does not take any particular element to the “extreme.” Instead, Berman and his crew have sought to provide a boat that is truly well balanced in all aspects. And, they’ve done it.

Length: 62 Feet

Price: From $700k to $1.7 Million USD on the Used Market

Manufactured in 2014, this luxury catamaran is ideal for those who enjoy watersports and healthy activities. It was designed by world-renowned designer Van Peteghem-Lauriot Prvost (VPLP) and built to top-notch quality with a focus on stability, performance, luxury, and spaciousness. The maximum capacity of this boat is 12 guests in 4-double and 2-twin cabins. The Sunreef 620 is the very first to feature a newly developed rig. From the large cabins, saloon, galley, and sail performance, the 620 is one boat you’d get a memorable experience on. As you can understand, this is a great catamaran over 50 feet to use as a liveaboard.

Outremer 5X

Length: 69 Feet

Price: From $1.3 to $1.8 Million USD on the Used Market

The Outremer 5X is unlike any other in the yacht market as it is fast, sturdy, but luxurious all at the same time. Also, it possesses finely finished cabinetwork, spacious accommodations, and an excellent payload carrying ability. Modeled great agility to make even a single person handle any maneuver, its retractable high aspect ratio daggerboards assure a shallower drift giving access to the most remote of harbors.

When it comes to the interior, every Outremer model is trying to outdo the last in elegance, neatness, and modernity. She offers an unrestricted view and functional comfort. The port hull suite includes a king-sized bed, superb sea view portlight, an office, and a separate private entrance from the rear. It’s a semi-custom interior designed by VPLP in conjunction with Patrick le Quement. It won the ‘European Yacht of the Year’ and Cruising World’s ‘Boat of the Year’ in 2013 and 2014. This catamaran is as affordable as a luxury catamaran over 50 feet can get. Beautiful isn’t she?

Length: 51 Feet

Price: From $450k to $550k On the Used Market

Aimed at Blue-water sailors looking to sail fast and far, Switch 51 has proved itself and regarded in this day as a remarkable ocean cruising catamaran. This classic high-performance voyage was designed by VPLP and is said to combine a level of comfort, performance, and safety. It was built by Sud Composites in France with high tech materials. Sud initially built about 18 of these classic catamarans from 2001 to 2007.

Switch 51 hulls are built with vinyl ester sandwiched with a Klegecelle PVC foam core, thereby creating a hull light enough to be real quick and heavy enough to handle the ocean waves and swells. The saloon and galley are huge, with the cockpit spacious. The layout and accommodation are perfect for a small family with classic amenities aimed at making your stay on board a memorable one. This also a pretty affordable option in this category with prices on the used market as low as 450k.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.

TRAILHEAD INFORMATION

The Richmond Marina provides access to the Richmond Shoreline and beyond, with sweeping views of the Bay Bridge, Brooks Island, San Francisco, and Angel Island in the distance. The Marina provides a protected launch and Marina Inner Harbor Basin provides an ideal location for paddling that is sheltered from the winds.

A concessionaire, 510 Waterline, offers SUP lessons and equipment rentals.

Boat Facilities

Boat launch facilities consist of an ADA low-freeboard dock with a kayak assist and two SUP handrails. The Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) constructed the ADA launch in 2018. This facility also includes a kayak staging area, ADA gangway, transition plates, and kayak roll-bars with a transfer system.

There is also a corrugated cement boat ramp and two high-freeboard docks for larger craft. The Marina offers public boat storage for $30/month for outside storage and $40/month for inside storage.

From I-580, take the Cutting Boulevard / Harbour Way South exit and turn onto Harbour Way South. Follow the round for approximately 1 mile then make a left onto Hall Avenue. The Marina is located at the end of Hall Avenue.

The 74 bus line stops at Regatta Boulevard and Marina Way, approximately 0.8 miles from the Marina.

Ample paid parking is available at the Marina. Currently parking is $10 for 24 hours or $20 for 48 hours, which can be paid at an electronic kiosk. There are also four free Public Shore parking spaces in the business park lot next to the marina.

ADA restrooms with running water are located near the top of the boat ramp.

Marina Bay provides a variety of nearby amenities including boat storage, a boat washdown area, restaurants, walking paths, benches, and restrooms.

Accessibility

The recently constructed kayak launch has been designed to meet ADA standards, with a wide gangway, transition plates, transfer seat, and paved path of  travel.

The shoreside facilities include a variety of accessible facilities, including a path of travel (not marked), sidewalks, restroom, and parking that all appear to be ADA accessible and well maintained.

Safety Tips

This launch is used primarily by motorized boats and can get crowded on weekends, so care needs to be taken to avoid user conflicts. Motorized boats and sailboats are regularly moving throughout the marina, particularly near the mouth of the marina. In addition, large ships utilize the Santa Fe Channel, located to the west of the Marina, so small non-motorized boats need to take caution to avoid these vessels.

There is a 300-foot security exclusion zone around the Chevron Long Wharf, located 3.5 miles northwest of the Marina.

The Harbormaster is onsite daily between 9AM and 5PM.

Wildlife Tips

Brooks Island is located approximately one mile offshore from the Marina. Brooks Island hosts 18 species of nesting birds, including herons, gulls, and terns. Brooks Island is also home to a secondary harbor seal haul-out site. Access to Brooks Island is only allowed seasonally on the western sandspit of the Island or as part of a scheduled East Bay Regional Park District naturalist tour. Trips to Brooks Island can be scheduled through EBRPD Reservations Department.

The Albany Mudflats Ecological Reserve / State Marine Park, an important feeding ground for a variety of shorebirds and waterfowl, is located approximately 2.5 miles to the southeast.  The Albany Mudflats are extremely shallow during high tides and large mudflats are  exposed at low tides. Due to the potential to get stranded and for sensitive habitat considerations, paddlers are not allowed to enter this area.

The Delta Marina Yacht Harbor was built in the late 1950’s by the Baumann family of Rio Vista, out of what used to be known as St. Joseph’s Cut along the Sacramento River.

The Marina can accommodate up to 250 boats. We have both covered and uncovered slips. Our slips range in size from 20 ft to 40 ft. We have one of the largest guest docks in the Delta, with nearly 800 ft of docking space for overnighters or yacht clubs.

We also have an RV Park with 25 sites. Thirteen of those sites are right on the Sacramento River, and others are tucked under mature trees with a view of the marina. Be sure to also check out THE POINT restaurant on the property, with great views, and even better food … 7 days a week!

You can find us at the south end of Second Street, just past Riverview Middle School. Groceries and restaurants are only a few blocks walk away. Rio Vista is a charming small town right along the Sacramento River in Solano County. We are proud to call it home. We get many visitors to our marina and RV park who say, “We never knew you were here! ~ What a great find!” Comments like these make our day! With harbor project dead, city seeks fee hikes for marina boat owners

After a proposal to build a yacht harbor in front of Marina Green was squashed by grassroots organizers, an effort is underway to raise the fees for berthing a vessel at the boatyard. The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department says the move will help make its operations there financially sustainable.

The department notified boat owners this week that it would like to bump berthing fees by a whopping 31.4% by summer 2025. If the fee increases are approved, it would affect about 600 vessels, the department said.

"It's to make the marina self-sufficient," department spokesperson Tamara Aparton told The Standard. "We can't subsidize it. We think our funding should go toward recreation, not for subsidizing the marina."

Keeping a boat at the marina currently costs $6,000 annually for the smallest, 25-foot slip and up to $30,600 for the largest, 100-foot slip.

The new proposal comes after the city tried to use part of a $160 million settlement with PG&E to redesign the entire harbor. The funds were intended to clean up pollution in the bay caused by a former coal gasification plant.

The department had proposed extending the harbor and adding a new breakwater, arguing that the project would have added funds to its coffers by allowing it to cut back on expensive dredging and bring in more customers with the additional docks. The plan was put forward as the city contends with a massive budget deficit that has led to orders by Mayor London Breed to cut department costs.

An analysis by city staff suggested that additional boats could make the marina profitable to the tune of $1 million a year. But the project was spiked in late January after an outcry from residents who argued that building anything in front of Marina Green would ruin a vital community space.

Members of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors' Land Use and Transportation Committee agreed with opponents and passed an ordinance blocking the plans from moving forward. The committee vote was unanimous, and the ordinance was ultimately approved by the full board and signed by Breed.

Now, the Recreation and Park Department is looking for other ways to keep the boatyard afloat.

The proposal for the fee increases will be heard at the Budget and Finance Committee on Wednesday.

"We understand that any increase in fees may impact you, and we assure you that these adjustments have been carefully considered in light of our operational needs and commitments to maintaining high-quality facilities and services," the he Recreation and Park Department said in a message to owners.

Joe Burn, who has been boating at the harbor since the 1970s and currently docks a 35-foot sailboat there, said he understands that the city needs to find funding somewhere. But he worries that the cost increases could end up driving boat owners elsewhere, noting that the current rates are already expensive.

"You’re going to lose them," Burn said. "It's too easy to go somewhere else. There are plenty of places to go to."

A California philanthropist allegedly threatened to kill a dock worker during a heated argument from his multimillion-dollar yacht, before dropping his pants and making several threatening gestures to the employee.

Ajay Thakore, a local entrepreneur in the San Diego area, attempted to dock his Lamborghini yacht at the private Marriot Marquis Marina to pick up one of his employees but was stopped by worker Joseph Holt on Sunday.

“I told him respectfully that he couldn’t be there, and I honestly was hoping to have a conversation with him about his cool boat,” Holt told CBS8. “But yeah, it completely went the other way.”

Thakore, who goes by his social media name, Ace Rogers, was riding on his rare $4.5 million Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 yacht at the time of the daytime dispute.

Holt claimed Thakore became hostile as soon as he was told off.

“It escalated immediately. It was 0 to 100 immediately,” the 21-year-old worker added.

Thakore, the CEO of medical advertising firm Doctor Multimedia, allegedly began to threaten Holt’s life as the luxury speedboat drove away from the docks.

“I will kill you, you know I will kill you, I will kill,” Thakore repeatedly yells, according to the video posted to YouTube.

Besides threatening to take Holt’s life, Thakore claimed to have the power to get the dock worker fired, ripping on the type of job he had.

“I’m a minimum wage worker, he was commenting on that, on my status just because of my job,” Holt said. “He was saying I’m nobody, I’m nothing, I work a silly job.”

“He said that he knows people, he has connections, he can change my life and ruin it,” he added.

During the heated discussion, Thakore allegedly pulled out his wallet and began throwing $100 bills at Holt and into the water, according to the outlet.

Holt said he tried to control himself during the incident and only gave Thakore the middle finger.

“I really didn’t know how to process it. I really was trying to restrain myself from getting fired from my job or stepping out of line. The only thing I did was give him the bird,” he said.

The dock hand blasted Thakore for his actions, especially in a public setting where he stripped nude and showed himself off.

“He had dropped his pants and started to make gestures to everybody watching and me. You can’t act that way in public. It’s just not OK. Especially threatening my life, at the very least. There were women and children there. That’s the most important part,” Holt said.

Thakore claims his outburst started because of a misunderstanding and was sorry for the people who saw it.

“The interaction that occurred yesterday was regrettable. What started as a minor misunderstanding escalated into an argument, and I apologize for my actions and to those who witnessed the unfortunate exchange,” Thakore’s public relations team said in a statement, obtained by KFMB.

Port of San Diego Harbor Police were called to the Seaforth Boat rental dock for “a possible intoxicated vessel operator” but arrived at the marina 10 minutes after Thakore and his boat had left.

The employee who attempted to board the extravagant boat defended his boss’s actions, saying Holt was hostile toward Thakore, and the businessman was only defending his team.

“As I went to kindly step onto the Yacht, I was impeded by two members that work for Seaforth Boat Rental,” Thakore’s employee Jason said on a post to the CEO’s Instagram account.

Jason said he was told to “stand back” the first time he went to step on the boat, and claimed he was forearmed during his second attempt to board the yacht.

“They physically got in my way, the situation became fairly tense, there was a lot of screaming back and forth, extremely confrontational, I didn’t fully understand protocol, as I was going to step onto the boat.”

“As all of this happened, my boss flipped and he’s very protective of me, his fiancée, of his employees.” Jason added. “It was a confusing situation that became very tense and very confrontational.”

Thakore captioned the post saying “there are two sides to every story and it’s easy to paint a picture with edited video clips from cell phones.”

“My employee Jason was being restricted, restrained, and threatened while trying to board my yacht. As a leader, I defend my own fiercely with everything I have, and I will never apologize for that,” the caption read.

The Marina has, depending on boat lengths, 70 - 83 slips available on daily, weekly, monthly, or annual agreements. All slips provide guests with metered electricity and water, sewage pump out, Wi-Fi, and sales of unleaded and diesel fuel. The facility includes a boat ramp and dedicated parking area, as well as temporary courtesy daytime dockage for eight to ten Islamorada resident boats during special events. There is a tiki-style social pavilion with grills and an ample trailer parking area. Marina guests also have access to the facilities and activities at the adjacent Islamorada Founders Park. The Marina office and boat ramp are open every day from 8 am to 6 pm.

The Marina is also located in the fabulous Founders Park. Marina Residents have Free access to the Park which includes a pristine beach, tennis courts, dog park, nature walk, and fitness park. Founders Park features an Olympic-sized swimming pool, lap lanes, diving boards, and a slide available. Pool Fees apply.

Riviera Beach City Councilwoman Julia Botel said representatives of marina owner Safe Harbor told her last year that one of her colleagues, Douglas Lawson, tried to barter his vote on a development project.

Botel's complaint to the state Commission on Ethics, filed in October, was forwarded to The Palm Beach Post on Wednesday.

"At a recent (August 2023) Riviera Beach City Council meeting, the yacht manufacturing company Safe Harbor Marinas petitioned the City of Riviera Beach for formal land use and rezoning, abandonment of certain Right-of-Way segments and other items related to the development of their property," Botel wrote to the commission.

"Representatives from Safe Harbor told me that Councilperson Douglas Lawson offered the Safe Harbor Company to vote in favor of the proposed ordinances if Safe Harbor were willing to provide financial support for the candidacy for (Palm Beach) County Commision of Richard Ryles and if they were to hire Dale Holness as their attorney."

Botel noted that "this constitutes and abuse of public position. It is an attempt by Councilperson Lawson to use his official position to obtain a special privilege or benefit for himself or certain colleagues and friends (Richard Ryles and Dale Holness)."

The state Commission on Ethics does not confirm or deny the existence of a complaint until some disposition of it has been made.

Lawson was among three council members who voted down Safe Harbor's requests in September for zoning changes to facilitate expanded operations at the city waterfront. Botel and council member Shirley Lanier voted in favor of the requests.

Asked about the ethics complaint, a spokeswoman for Lawson said: "This is an ongoing investigation, and Mr. Lawson will comply with state law and will not comment until he is exonerated, which he intends to be. His focus has been, always will be his work for the residents of Riviera Beach."

Ryles, an attorney and former West Palm Beach City Commission member, is running for a seat on the Palm Beach County Commission. Holness, a real estate agent and mortgage broker, is a former Broward County Commission member who ran an unsuccessful race to succeed the late Congressman Alcee Hastings, a Democrat who represented portions of Palm Beach and Broward counties in the U.S. House.

Botel did not say who, specifically, told her Lawson tried to barter his vote.

"I suggest you check with the Ethics Commission," she texted Wednesday, March 13 when asked for comment.

Efforts to reach Holness and Safe Harbor were unsuccessful.

Ryles said he is "anxiously awaiting the conclusion of the investigation so that the community will know I had no hand in any wrongdoing."

News of the ethics complaint against Lawson is only the latest drama connected to Riviera Beach's City Council, rife with acrimony and subterranean grievances.

Lawson and another council member, Tradrick McCoy, were involved in a physical altercation after a meeting in January. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office found enough probable cause to seek battery charges against both men but did not pursue charges when both officials agreed not to move forward with the case.

The fight prompted McCoy's colleagues to ask Gov. Ron DeSantis to suspend or remove him.

Botel may be in her final days as a council member.

An appellate court found that she did not follow state law in qualifying as a candidate for re-election. She has said she plans to appeal that decision to the state Supreme Court, but a swearing-in date of March 20 has already been set for her opponent, Glen Spiritis.

A California yacht owner's vicious beef with a dock worker has reached death-threat levels -- and their exchange was caught on camera and included a nude, and very rude, gesture!

Check out the clip ... it all unfolds when San Diego entrepreneur Ajay Thakore swings by the swanky Marriott Marquis Marina in his rare $4.5M Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 yacht to pick up one of his employees -- but things boil over when dock worker Joseph Holt tells him he can't be there.

Thakore, the CEO of medical advertising firm Doctor Multimedia, flips out on Holt big time ... and starts spewing threats like, "I will kill you, you know I will kill you, I will kill."

And it doesn't stop there -- as Thakore's pulling out of the harbor, he drops trou to make a full frontal salute in Holt's direction. Stay classy, San Diego!

Holt's only retaliation was flipping the bird, and he later told CBS8 that was all he could do to keep his cool and avoid escalating the situation.

Holt says parts of the altercation were not captured on camera, and he adds ... Thakore not only threatened to kill him, but also claimed to have connections who could totally mess up his life.

Holt also says Thakore pulled out $100 bills and tossed them at him, even chucking some in the water.

BTW, Thakore's done some backpedaling since the ugly exchange -- he now says, "The interaction that occurred yesterday was regrettable. What started as a minor misunderstanding escalated into an argument, and I apologize for my actions and to those who witnessed the unfortunate exchange."

FWIW ... One of Thakore’s employees claims the whole thing began because other dock workers blocked him from boarding the yacht.

Who is Ajay Thakore? San Diego Lamborghini Yacht owner threatens dock worker in viral video

A n Indian-origin California business owner Ajay Thakore recently made headlines when he reportedly threatened a dockyard worker at San Diego's Marriott Marina after the latter refused to let the former park his $4.5 million Lamborghini Yacht, as per Times Now News.

The video of the incident has now gone viral online. While the face of the man threatening the dock employee saying "I will kill you!" multiple times remains unclear in the footage, many media outlets, including the New York Post confirmed it was Ajay Thakore, who has previously been part of similar confrontations.

Apart from threatening to kill the dock worker, the man in the video also flashed at the latter, as the yacht moved away from the marina. In the wake of this incident, here's looking at who Ajay Thakore is.

Ajay Thakore also goes by the name Ace Rogers

According to Daily Mail, Ajay Thakore also goes by the name Ace Rogers and he is a wealthy businessman and philanthropist based in San Diego, California. He is the CEO of Doctor Multimedia, a local medical marketing agency, and Gopher Media LLC.

He has previously faced similar controversy in 2021 when he was accused of harassing the employees of a La Jolla pizza joint called American Pizza Manufacturing. Its founder Andrew Melone alleged back then that it all started with Thakore defaming the take-and-bake pizza establishment on social media.

However, things escalated when the Indian-origin business owner reportedly parked two of his cars directly in front of the eatery, blocking its entrance, with texts, "Take N Bake Pizza Sucks" glaring on top of it.

Melone also claimed that an airplane flew over the locality with the banner reading, "Just Say No to Take N Bake Pizza." Not only that but Ajay Thakore reportedly involved another pizzeria in the area Carino's, with planes displaying messages like "Carino's Pizza is Better than Take N Bake."

Additionally, Thakore and his companies filed a $10 million lawsuit against Andrew Melone and his public accusations, claiming that they were "exercising their First Amendment Rights" and protesting against discrimination. The owner of the pizzeria countersued, alleging Thakore had persistently harassed him and his company. The two civil lawsuits are still underway.

Exploring the recent controversy surrounding Ajay Thakore

On the afternoon of March 10, 2024, Ajay Thakore's multimillion-dollar Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 yacht was not allowed to park in the Seaforth Boat Rental lot in San Diego's Marriott Marina. He was reportedly there to pick up an employee. The video of the incident has now gone viral.

It shows a man standing on the edge of the yacht threatening to "kill" the worker identified as Joseph Holt, as per CBS 8. Later, as the boat moved away from the dock, the former dropped his pants and made inappropriate gestures toward the 21-year-old employee. The harasser even threw $100 bills at the guy which fell into the water.

Holt told reporters that he "respectfully" told the driver not to park in the private space and was hoping to have a "conversation" with him about his "cool boat," when "it completely went the other way."

"I really didn't know how to process it. I really was trying to restrain myself from getting fired from my job or stepping out of line. The only thing I did was give him the bird," Holt stated.

The employee also mentioned how Thakore berated him for his minimum wage labor and called him a nobody who did nothing on a "silly job." The expensive boat owner allegedly threatened to have him fired using his "connections" and ruin his life.

The dock worker further continued,

"He had dropped his pants and started to make gestures to everybody watching and me. You can't act that way in public. It's just not okay. Especially threatening my life, at the very least. There were women and children there. That's the most important part."

In contrast, Ajay Thakore's public relations team told CBS 8 that the "interaction" was "regrettable."

"What started as a minor misunderstanding escalated into an argument, and I apologize for my actions and to those who witnessed the unfortunate exchange," the statement added.

Later, Ajay Thakore's employee Jason, whom the former was supposed to pick up during the fiasco, also issued a clarification via his boss' Instagram (@acerogersceo). He said that he was not allowed to get aboard, and was asked to "stand back" and even "forearmed" which is when Thakore allegedly "flipped" as he was protective of him, his fiancé, and his other employees, tagging it as a long-drawn misunderstanding.

In the caption of the post, it was Ajay Thakore who seemed to issue a statement:

"As a leader, I defend my own fiercely with everything I have, and I will never apologize for that. You can choose to believe that I just pulled up to the dock and started yelling, or you can realize that a lot happened before the cameras were rolling and that it takes two sides to escalate a situation."

Notably, in the aftermath of the incident, Port of San Diego Harbor Police were called in, who arrived 10 minutes after Ajay Thakore's boat left the marina. Joseph Holt told the news outlet that the officers didn't take his complaints seriously and were even laughing at him.

The department responded by telling CBS 8 that they were called in to deal with a "possible intoxicated vessel operator" who had departed the area before they got there and that they were unable to do anything with. The statement went on to say that a report had been made and that the police had spoken with the complainant and witnesses.
