Hilton Head Plantation’s Oyster Reef Golf Club that opened in 1982, was immediately ranked as one of America’s top 25 new courses and Rees Jones’s challenging design keeps golfers coming back. The Harbour Town Golf Links course is located on the southern tip of Hilton Head in the Sea Pines Resort, a 5200-acre private residential gated community with four golf courses. A PGA Tour Golf Tournament (RBC Heritage) is played on the Harbour Town Links in April. The Shipyard Golf Club with a view of the beach, is located midway on the island, and features a Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. Other notable courses are Bear Creek Golf Club, Port Royal Planter’s Row Golf Course and Port Royal Robber’s Row Golf Course, and there are many more public and private courses on Hilton Head.

Of course, with some of the best beaches in the US, Hilton Head is a prime vacation destination and features many top-notch resorts and hotels. Beach House Resort is the island’s only oceanfront boutique resort, located on Coligny Beach. The resort’s legendary Tiki Hut features year-round live music and the Porch Southern Kitchen & Bar for lowcountry dining. Hilton Head offers so much more to visitors in the way of outdoor activities with inshore and offshore fishing, kayaking, bird-watching, dolphin tours, a zipline canopy tour, lowcountry wildlife and foliage exploring at the Audubon-Newhall Preserve and Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge—a salt marsh located between Hilton Head Island and the mainland, along with 60 miles of trails/paved pathways for hiking and biking.

Shelter Cove Marina located in Shelter Cove Harbour Shops and Restaurants which is in the center of the island across from Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort. Shelter Cove offers dining, shopping, entertainment venues and watersports year-round. The 15.5-acre award-winning deep-water marina offers 178 slip rentals for vessels up to 145’ length, on a daily, weekly, monthly and annual basis, along with comprehensive amenities. Shelter Cove offers visitors inshore or offshore fishing charters, crabbing, sailing, dolphin tors, sightseeing and nature tours.

Windmill Harbor Marina is a safe, tide-free haven protected by a lock (75’L x 19’W) system directly on the Atlantic Intercoastal Waterway (AICW) on the northwest coast of Hilton Head Island. The marina is on the Calibogue Bay/AICW, an unpolluted estuary, half-mile south of the Pinckney Island Bridge. The 15.5-acre harbor has 258 slips accommodating boats from 25’ to 70’ and available for monthly rental or for sale. Transient dockage is also available. Hilton Head Harbor RV Resort & Marina offers extensive resort amenities and facilities, along with a 5-star onsite restaurant. The marina has 101 slips for boats 20’ to 45’ length and easy access to open water. The slips are available for daily, weekly, monthly and annual contracts. Also featured is a 126’ transient and fuel dock, ship store and many other amenities.

The #1 attraction for visitors is the Pirates of Hilton Head, featuring “Black Dagger,” the first and only custom pirate ship on the island! Kids are transformed into pirate crew as they enjoy a pirate cruise to search for treasure and shoot a water cannon at “Stinky Pete” pirate for the treasure map key. Lots of fun! Hilton Head Island was named for Captain William Hilton, who identified the headland near the entrance to Port Royal Sound in 1663. Native Americans seasonally occupied the island along with European exploration over the years and the Sea Island Cotton trade activities. Hilton Head was the base of operations for the Union blockade of southern ports during the Civil War. Thousands of freed slaves flocked to Hilton Head when it fell to the Union forces.

Today, descendants of the former slaves, known as the Gullah or Geechee, still live on the island and retain their cultural heritage and ethnic identity. The town was incorporated in 1983 and is very careful to ensure eco-friendly development to conform buildings to the surrounding trees, preserving the island’s tree cover. It is notable that 70% of Hilton Head is within a gated community! The town maintains numerous access points to the public beaches to provide enjoyment of its beautiful beaches to all.
