Pearson 27 (Triton 27)

Pearson 27 (Triton 27) is a 27 ′ 0 ″ / 8.2 m monohull sailboat designed by Doug Peterson (unauthorized) and built by Pearson Yachts starting in 1986.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

This version of the PEARSON 27 is the same as the TRITON 27 and similar to the earlier US 27 by US Yachts. In 1984-85 Pearson sold a line of sailboats that it called the Tritons. The molds for these yachts were actually purchased from US Yachts, a division of Bayliner Inc. (the Buccaneer series of sailboats). Shoal draft: 3.50’/1.07m. All are distantly related to the CHASER 29, an IOR 1/2 ton design by Doug Peterson (1975).

Hi, First time poster! I currently sail a 23 foot Precision and have been looking at moving up in the future. I like the look of the Pearson 27 at my marina. Any thoughts or opinions on the boat? TIA, John

Rich (P303)

Rich (P303)

Pearson is a great boat. I have a P303... it is perfect for me. Grab the owner of the boat at the Marina... I am sure he would like to take you for a spin. You can decide for yourself! You can't go wrong with a Pearson... it is a quality name. Rich

Pearson 27 keel Thanks for the replies. Does anyone know if the wing keel is bolted on or molded into the hull? TIA, John

Ariel

Pearson 27 keel John, The wing keel on the 27 is a bolt on and is lead. The 27 was designed by Bill Shaw as a family of boats from the 27 thru the 39. I'm not sure which size was the "mother" design, but think it was the 39. The sizes in the new family that duplicated previous size numbers have been dubed the -2 series (i.e P36-2). The family was designed in 1984 /1985 and the first models were introduced as 1985 models. There are some very characteristic manufacturing features on Pearson hulls that were carried over from previous hull families that can identify the Bill Shaw designs, including the main support structure, shroud loading points, mast loading, skegs, engine location, etc. We have a 27 in the marina with my boat and the owner loves it. It looks like new after twenty years. Dave

Pearson 27 keel Thanks Dave

SailorMitch

P-27 I owned a 1989 P-27 for 14 years and loved the boat. I moved up to a P-33-2 in part because the P-27 was so well made and sailed so well. Go for it. You won't be disappointed. Dave is most correct that the P-27 was designed by Bill Shaw. Bffatcat is right that Pearson bought some molds from U.S. Yachts, but those boats were marketed under the Pearson Triton line. Confusing yes, but they are very different boats, and not that many were made. While Pearson was having money troubles in the late '80's, they didn't lack funds to hire a naval architect since Bill Shaw was still there! Bill designed the boats right up to the end, with help from Bill Richards and some other employees no doubt, but Shaw was the man at the drafting table. Any other questions about the 27, let me know.
