Those are the inflatable catamaran's specs, but what about that distinctive landing craft bow? It’s easy to get on and off the boat, whether you’re on the dock, on the beach or in your mothership. It’s as simple as stepping on board. There’s no high point to climb over, and you don’t have to worry about tipping over. Getting in and out of the boat is much easier than getting in and out of a traditional boat. Our customers tell us that no other inflatable ‘offers the same level of ease’ when they re-board after a swim or snorkel or dive.

IMPORTANT WARNING:  Please note that Mini Cat type of boats are not designed to be sport racers. They do not have sponsors or fiberglass wings as XCAT type of racing boats. Mini Cats are designed to be inexpensive budget solution watercraft that can go nice and easy with small gas outboard or affordable electric trolling motors. However, care has to be taken when going fast against the strong winds, as it may flip boat over if operated improperly with wrong weight distribution. As with any other watercrafts, always wear life jacket and use outboard lanyard kill switch when going fast.

Showcase: PVC Catamaran

The past few months were dedicated to planning a catamaran build out of PVC pipes which will be used for mapping lakes with a simple deeper pro plus Sonar.

Finally all parts arrived. And after testing some basic stuff it’s finally time to actually build something.

I’d like to share my progress to maybe get some last minute suggestions.

Yesterday I mounted everything on a “training board” to check if my concept works. Next step will be cutting some holes in the case and transfer everything to the actual boat.

Still on the to do list: integrating a BEC which powers a wifi router to repeat the sonar signal, calibrate the esc and tinker with the parameters.

20200915_193232

Interesting, thanks for sharing. A couple of questions:

what are the TP link antennas connected to ? I guess it has to do with sending sonar data to shore, right ?

I see 2 batteries: are they powering the motors individually ? Or are they connected in parallel and both powering both engines ? The latter would allow better use of the full capacity, otherwise which ever discharges first will prevent you to steer…

You’ve got some Hawkeyes mate. Those are indeed tp-link antennas.

They will be connected to a a tp-link WA901ND which will then repeat the sonar data to the shore. On shore will be a small base station with another tp-link. This is due to the deeper sonar only working via wifi and the original app. The tp links are flashed with OpenWRT firmware and have a range of over 600 meter.

The batteries (2 × 3s 10.000mAh) are in parallel. To prevent exactly what you said. I don’t want one thruster to shut down just because 1 battery is empty.

Are you implementing the possibility ti reverse the motor ? Which ESCs did you choose ?

The thrusters are totally able to go in to reverse. I’m using the ZTW Shark 50A ESC. They do have an option for water cooling. But I’m not planning on using that.

It’s a nice option to have however.

Here is my newest progress by the way. I had the idea to fully utilize all space that’s given. So I raised the wooden board by about 6cm and put all the ugly power stuff underneath. So the 2 ESCs, parallel adapter, pixhawk power module and a step down converter for the wifi router are hidden.

I also cut two battery bays, so they won’t jiggle and I don’t need to use any kind of tape.

Top floor is now nice and clean. There will be more leads for antennas, telemetry and gps and what not. But I’m trying to keep it clean.

20200928_222804(0)_compress75

Yesterday i mounted all the antennas, made an rail for the sma cables and mounted the IP67 connectors which will connect the thrusters. So I’ll be able to unmount the box without the thrusters. Or unplug the thrusters if needed.

20200929_210957_compress57

Unfortunately it was already too late yesterday to test it on the water. I’m really excited to see how it behaves on the water!

The thrusters will be on the bottom side in the water and I’ll make some prop guards for them.

What a great project! Thank you for sharing this!

I’ve been planning to do similar style boat, and it was amazing to stumble to your work.

Couple of questions:

What is the diameter of the pipe and other dimensions of the boat? I’ve been planning to use 160 mm pipe with 1000 mm length. This would provide plenty of buoyancy with low enough weight and small enough to fit in a car.

What are the specs of the motors and propellers? Have you tested what kind of speed and operating time you are getting? For me, this has been quite difficult to estimate as I would need hours of operating time but also decent performance.

What is the box containing the electronics? I’ve yet to find box with low enough profile to keep the center of gravity low enough.

But thanks again for sharing this and I’m hoping to see how you advance with the project!

Hi cramsey,

Glad i could spark some inspiration. I had the same problem when i started building. There are only a hand full of people in the internet who built something similar and willing to share their knowledge. Would be awesome if you’d share your project with us too.

The pipes i used have a 110mm diameter. Combined with a size of 97cm(L) x 65cm(W) x 45cm(H) this provides a pretty stable platform which is low enough to (hopefully) not capsize. The pipes provide a theoretical buoyancy of about 12-13KG. Being just shy of 10kg of weight, this is enough. But the boat is heavier than i had estimated. But just like you said; it fits nicely in pretty much any car.

The motors are some cheap china knock offs. I am planning on buying some better thrusters at some point, due to these propellers breaking very quickly. (Already shredded 3 of them). But they are able to provide around 6kg of thrust together at 100%. This means a power consumption of around 15A and thus draining the battery in about an hour.

However, since i don’t need the full speed of 10km/h for my mapping project i’m cruising along at about 25% throttle to reach 3km/h and a power consumption of 3-5A.

I eidn’t do any long range test until now. I’ll share any more detailed results here. But it seems that i can drive for about 4 hours at 3km/h. Anyway, i Need to test that.

By the way: the box is just a simple electronics/junction box with ip65 rating. They’re not cheap on the european market. Hence why i bought it in china.

How’s the project going? Did you process the deeper sonar logs in reefmaster? I’m doing a similar project using a boogie board and deeper sonar. I work for a golf course and we want an accurate water holding capacity for all of our irrigation lakes. We don’t have any vegetation or debris on the water surface so I don’t think my thrusters will have a problem. I finally got the shark ESCs working yesterday and I’ll mount everything today. Hope you can share more about the outcome of the project! Very exciting

I had the project on a hold for quite some time now, because I started a new job and was busy with my other hobby. I also was at a point where I was not quite satisfied with the deeper and looked for an alternative sonar.

However, the project itself does quite well. But I’m planning on getting rid of the WiFi connection. I bought a new lowrance elite 5 with Totalscan transducer and want to transmit the nmea sonar signal via some frequency other than WiFi.

Anyway: I do process the logged sonar data which I got with my deeper in reefmaster yes. If you got the hang of it it’s quite an easy process. But you will need to upload your deeper map to maps.deeper.com . there you will find an option to download the sonar data as a .CSV file which you can easily import into reefmaster.

Reefmaster than can calculate your total water volume. For what you’re looking for I think it will work really well. Since you don’t need a range greater than 150-200 meters (which is what I’m getting)

Hi Bastiaan,

Thanks for the info. I was able to map my first pond using the deeper pro+ and reefmaster. I too had issues with the wifi connection. instead if trolling behind the boat i think ill try to somehow mount it inside the foam with bottom half in the water and the top half exposed. Maybe that will give me a better signal. one motor got stuck in some debris, it still works but the boat now veers to one side. I’m going to get it replaced and keep mapping. I also need to figure out the best solution to keep the componants cool. there is no air circulation in the box. the ESCs have ports for water cooling. Anyways ill keep everyone updated on how its going. here is a link to a short video. Sorry about the quality.

James and Hanneke receiving an award

James Wharram: Lifetime Achievement Award

A special award was presented to James Wharram for a 'Lifetime Achievement' as Pioneer catamaran builder - sailor and multihull designer.

James Wharram - British pioneer of the modern catamaran

About James Wharram

In the mid 50's, based on his research into ancient Polynesian boat design, James Wharram built the first off-shore Catamaran in Britain and sailed it out into the Atlantic. While the world's yachting community still did not accept such a design as a worthy sea-going vessel, James was landing his 23'6" 'Double Canoe' called TANGAROA in Trinidad in the West Indies.

There he built a second 40' Polynesian style Catamaran, RONGO, and in 1959 sailed it up to New York and back to the UK accompanied by two German women - being the first to sail a catamaran West-to-East across the North Atlantic. These amazing Trans-Atlantic crossings and the follow up book ' Two Girls, Two Catamarans ' have etched the name 'James Wharram' into the annals of yachting history.

Since then, James Wharram has been designing, building and sailing offshore catamarans longer than any other multihull designer. James was a 'hands-on' designer having, over his lifetime, built personally many of the prototype designs. These prototypes were built in the open, in barns, workshops and all the range of building sites available to self-builders, in a variety of climate types from northern European to the Tropics. James was often referred to as a 'Living Legend' or as written in 'Yachting Monthly' in January 2006: "James Wharram is considered by many to be the father of modern multihull cruising."

James’ last achievement was his autobiography published in 2020 as ' People of the Sea ', which he wrote in conjunction with his design/life partner Hanneke Boon. James died in December 2021 at the age of 93. The design business is carried on by his co-designer Hanneke Boon .

This month of May in America is 'Pacific Islander History Month' and we at James Wharram Designs would like to join in and celebrate alongside them! As you may know, double canoes/catamarans are of ancient Polynesian origin. The modern day catamaran is a direct descendent of these original ocean-going vessels.

Catamarans gathered at a quay

On 23 July, a motley fleet of self-built catamarans gathered off Cornwall to give James and Ruth Wharram their final escort. It was a fitting farewell to a legend. The ashes of James and Ruth Wharram were consigned to the sea to be carried by the ebb current out to the open ocean.

Innovative inflatable catamarans + kayak

The catamaran inflatable boats from Takacat are ideal for divers, camping, caravans and motorhomes

Removable floor

It's hard to ignore the portability and comfort aspect of our fully removable inflatable floor system. Extremely rigid when inflated (10 psi), "standing on board is no problem", and both easy and quick to deflate and store for transport or storage. This is a big advantage over inflatable boats, which have a built-in floor or RIB, which can both hold water.

PVC or TPU (welded seams without plasticisers)

As standard, the boats are made of quality 5-Layer PVC (0,9mm - 1000 denier - 1100g/m²) fabric from  SIJIATEX,  which has a very strong UV protection. Optional boats are also available in TPU (1,2mm - welded seams without plasticisers). The 10PSI high pressure floor, including the additional 1mm thick PVC protective coating, is made exclusively of PVC with DropStitch technology. TPU is more abrasion-resistant than PVC and Hypalon/CSM, rafting boats or boats for extreme operating conditions (-70°C to +80°C) are made from TPU, for example. In contrast to PVC, TPU hoses do not contain any plasticisers, i.e. the welded seams remain supple even after welding and can withstand higher pressures than glued Hypalon/CSM seams.

Takacat - Takayak-395

pvc catamaran

Catamarans are much more tilt-resistant than monohulls, and this also applies to kayaks. Since TAKACAT exclusively develops boats in catamaran design, it was logical that the new kayak from TAKACAT will also be a catamaran => Takayak-395

Generous continuous load area

The number 395 describes the overall length of the Takayak. But much more interesting is the usable length of the inner high-pressure floor of 370cm, with a continuous width of 42cm. So the Takayak offers plenty of loading space for 2 people with luggage, parents with children or for one/two people with one or more dogs.

29cm drive hoses with protective strips on the undersides

The two driving hoses with their 29cm diameter are well proportioned for a maximum load of 260Kg and are powerfully supported by the large-surface high-pressure floor. The lower connecting floor between the two drive hoses additionally protects the inner high-pressure floor in case of ground contact and during landing.

10PSI "Drop-Stitch" high pressure floor

The 8cm thick high-pressure floor can be inflated with an operating pressure of up to 10PSI = 689mbar thanks to its drop-stitch technology. This creates a stable loading platform and shields the entire seating and loading area from the water surface.

3 air chambers + safety overpressure valves

Each driving hose is equipped with a Halkey-Roberts valve at the stern and an overpressure safety valve at the bow. Accidental over-pumping of the tubes is therefore impossible and harmful pressure increases due to strong sunlight are also avoided. The Takayak-395 has a total of 3 independent large-volume air chambers.

pvc catamaran

One-seam design + 5-layer PVC fabric skin

One-seam design means that each tube is made from a single piece of skin. The tubes have only one longitudinal seam on the outside, which is additionally covered with a resistant 1mm thick protective strip and thus doubly secured. At the bow and stern, the so-called bumpers (end pieces) are then glued in, also double-secured. The One-Seam design reduces the number of seams and seam intersections by over 50% compared to half-shell production and thus significantly reduces the possibility of possible leaks in the seam areas. The 5-ply fabric-reinforced PVC skin with 0.9mm thickness and 1000 dtex meets the standard of quality inflatable boats. Optionally, the Takayak-395 can also be manufactured in 1mm Hypalon/CSM.

Open bow and stern

The open bow and stern create a forced bilge. Water that penetrates the Takayak-395, e.g. due to an overflowing wave or heavy rain, immediately escapes again; no bilge valve can realise such a bilge capability. Another advantage is that it is easy to return out of the water. No time-consuming safety and re-entry training is necessary.

Mobile in a bag

The Takayak-395, together with the high pressure floor, the two paddles, the two kayak seats and the hand air pump can be stowed in a transport bag. The transport bag measures 120 x 40 x 40cm (length/width/height). The driving hoses and the high-pressure floor together weigh 20Kg, the completely parked carrying bag with all accessories weighs approx. 24Kg, depending on the model of the hand pump.

Assembly - quick and uncomplicated

Setting up the Takayak-395 is quick and uncomplicated:

  • Unroll the drive hoses and inflate to 250mbar (3.6PSI) at the stern using the Halkey-Roberts valves.
  • Insert the high-pressure floor, fix it to the underbody at the bow and stern using the tension straps and inflate to 689mbar (10PSI).
  • Insert the seats and tighten them using the side D-rings.
  • Assemble the paddles and adjust them to your personal style.

And the Takayak-395 is ready to go out. Depending on the number of people and the load, one or two seats can be clipped in.

Electric Engine connected with a FinBox adapter

Thanks to the straight-through connecting floor between the two tubes, the Takayak-395/300 offers the possibility of e.g. gluing a slide-in fin box from down against the connecting floor and thus using an electric motor as a supporting drive aid. There are many manufacturers on the market who offer slide-in electric motors with FinBox adapters, e.g. Vaquita from ePropulsion, the Scupajet from Austria or the new E-Finn from JAYKAY in Germany. The course is then steered with the help of the paddle. Depending on the drive, speeds of up to 10Km/h can be achieved.

Kayaking redesigned - Takayak-395 - the redesigned kayak from Takacat offers advantages for all those who do not want to do without comfort and unique functionality when kayaking. As a catamaran, a stable position in the water, a ride as if on two rails, boarding and disembarking via the open bow is effortless, even out of the water back into the kayak, plenty of space for dogs and luggage travelling with you and a unique forced bilge.

Takacat LXHD-Series - Heavy Duty Rescue Boats

pvc catamaran

The Takacat models 340LX-HD, 380LX-HD, 420LX-HD and 460LX-HD are available as heavy-duty versions for water rescue and other operations under difficult conditions. An ideal rapid intervention boat (SEB) for the fire brigade, water rescue and police. Due to their low immersion depth, TAKACAT catamaran inflatable boats are ideal for shallow water operations. The open bow makes it much easier to transfer people into the boat. The same applies to rescue divers and lifeguards. The open transom guarantees that the Takacats never fill up. Any water that is taken over flows straight back out of the boat.

In the heavy-duty version, the Takacats are made of 1.2mm/1450 weight RESC (red/dark blue) thick PVC fabric, alternatively 1.5mm/1750 weight MIL (black) thick PVC fabric or alternatively 1mm Hypalon/CSM. The top of the both tubes is double reinforced with a wide strip of PVC skin to protect against heavy uniforms.

The heavy-duty high-pressure floor has a full-surface and all-round PVC protective coating with an additional layer on the top (2mm) so that the boat can be walked on with heavy footwear without any problems and carrying heavy equipment is no problem.

The heavy-duty transom, made of 2mm stainless steel square tube plus 50mm thick PE1000 transom plates with additional stainless steel reinforcement, can be fitted with a maximum of a 15 or 20hp outboard motor, depending on the model. Thanks to the open bow, a transfer from the water into the boat can be carried out much more easily than with inflatable boats with a bow bulge. Divers can also return to the boat more easily. The open transom allows water that inevitably flows into the boat during a rescue operation to run off again immediately, and the same applies to wave action and heavy rain.

Due to the catamaran construction, the Takacat can also be used for ice rescue in winter, the same applies to the heavy-duty high-pressure floor. Optionally, a GRP floor can be used instead of the high-pressure floor.

The Takacat catamaran inflatable boats of the "Heavy-Duty" LX series are custom-made, i.e. special customer requests can be included in the production.

Takacat - LXRIB - RIB Catamaran with Aluminium Floor

pvc catamaran

Takacat-LXRIB - The special advantages of inflatable boats, rigid hull boats and catamarans are combined in the LXRIB from Takacat to create an interesting solution. A combination of hydrodynamic and aredynamic influences allow the Takacat LXRIB to float over the water instead of cutting through it, resulting in decent planing characteristics when using compact outboards and good fuel efficiency ..... Videos

With its large centre floor and integrated bow platform (460LXR) with anchor locker, the Takacat LXRIB offers more space than other inflatable boats in this size range.

Due to its catamaran-specific stability and gliding behaviour, the Takacat LXRIB is a very good boat for multiple uses such as diving, fishing, camping, water skiing and tubing. The robust Takacat LXRIB is also a very good choice as a safety and support boat for all types of water sports and for boat hire.

TPU (1.2mm - welded seams) is the standard material for the LXR tubes. In the marine environment, boats are constantly exposed to scratches and scrapes on rough surfaces such as sharp rocks. When designing RIB tubes, it is of utmost importance that they can withstand the extreme conditions. Here too, TPU offers advantages over CSM/Hypalon for inflatable boats. TPU is much more abrasion resistant than CSM/Hypalon. This is one of the main reasons why the US space agency NASA uses TPU instead of CSM coatings for most of its textile applications.

RIBs, and especially Extreme RIBs used as military and commercial sea rescue boats, are often used in harsh weather conditions. These include both scorching and sub-zero temperatures. It is vital that the coating of the hoses can withstand these extreme conditions. High temperatures are detrimental to some textile coatings as they increase oxidation of the coating and the underlying fabric. Low temperatures, on the other hand, can cause many materials to lose their flexibility and tear or fail. Both temperature extremes generally affect CSM coatings more than TPU coatings. TPU generally retains its performance properties at temperatures from -50°C to +70°C, meaning that Takacat-LXR can be used from the Arctic to the Caribbean.

Takacat 340LXRIB - Aluminium Floor

pvc catamaran

The new LXRIB from Takacat combines the aerodynamic design of the LX series with a robust connecting floor made of marine aluminium. The 340LXR will make its world debut at BOOT 2024 in Düsseldorf . The 340LXR and the 460LXR are currently available. Depending on the model, the LXRIB can be motorised with 50 hp. The LXRIB series has been consistently developed with recyclability in mind, i.e. the RIB floor is made of marine aluminium and the welded tubes are made of TPU. TPU can be welded like PVC but has no plasticisers that can evaporate, i.e. it remains elastic even after the seams have been welded. In addition, the softening temperature of TPU is considerably higher than that of PVC, which is a plus for hot regions and when the boat is transported on the davits. Unlike PVC, TPU can be recycled and is compostable. The LXRIB is optionally available with a bow stowage box. The 340LXR weighs 65kg and the 460LXR weighs 105kg. For a RIB, these values can be described as lightweight.

As an option, the LXRIB models can also be equipped with bench consoles, jockey seats and combination consoles, see examples above. Aluminium equipment carriers and electric jack plates are available as further options.

Glued Seams vs. Welded Seams

Welded seams are often used for RIBs as they are affordable, typically easy to do, and inflated most of the time. Glued seams are best for boats you intend to fold and unfold constantly.

Welded seams become brittle and will start to leak. Additionally, they are not totally repairable as you can only patch them up, which compromises your boat’s quality and performance.

You want to purchase glued seamed boats, which are more flexible and have higher holding power in complex shapes and sizes.

New catamarans: 2021’s most exciting launches

Yachting World

  • April 7, 2021

Fast cruising is the theme this year, say Toby Hodges and Sam Fortescue, who look at some of 2021's exciting new multihull launches

pvc catamaran

2021 looks set to be a bumper year for new catamarans as the trend for fast cruising yachts, which deliver plenty if living space continues. This year there are set to be several new catamarans on the market, here’s our selection of those about which we are most excited.

A group of wild enthusiasts in the landlocked Czech Republic are the force behind the new IC36 from Independent Catamaran. The debut model is a fully race-tuned cat that aims to appeal to speed freaks as well as performance cruisers. Oh, and it unbolts to fit inside a shipping container or on a trailer!

Perhaps closer in design terms to the Extreme 40 than a traditional cat, the IC36 has super narrow hulls, high displacement bows and an optional rotating carbon rig with composite stays.

A sporty-looking carbon beam braces the bows and doubles as a bowsprit for asymmetric sails. Deep daggerboards help windward performance, and there’s a racy dual carbon tiller providing direct rudder control.

“The first time I saw it, I just felt like it was from one of Jules Verne’s adventures,” says co-founder Jaromír Popek.

The boat has been optimised for electric propulsion with twin 6kW Oceanvolt saildrives and up to 15kWh of lithium-ion batteries giving a range of a couple of hours. Powerful hydrogeneration under sail keeps batteries topped up. For longer spells at anchor , there is also a decent 1.15kW array of Solbian solar panel s which folds away when not required.

As much fun as this boat should be to sail in its Raw racing variant, it is also available with more creature comforts.

The Pacer model has a coachroof, cockpit tent, more storage and cooking and freshwater systems. It can accommodate a reported eight people in the hulls, with a fridge and two-burner hob to port and a shower/heads to starboard. Or you can opt for a fridge and hob in the folding cockpit table.

Construction is in epoxy-glass composite with local Kevlar reinforcement and foam core, helping to keep weight down to less than 3 tonnes (key for trailering). And there are three buoyancy chambers in each hull, which underpin the claim that the boat is unsinkable.

For all the variants, the light weight and high-performance rig means you can sail in a breath of wind. In a blow, the sky should be the limit. Expect reaching speeds of 20 knots plus, particularly if you take the high-modulus carbon wing mast from Pauger.

This new launch from the world’s number one catamaran brand is the largest in the range of ‘regular’ boats, before entering the more luxurious world of the Lagoon 65.

It has been drawn by VPLP and Patrick le Quement, whose design nous has done much to make cats more mainstream. Many of the features, therefore, will be familiar from the smaller boats.

However, that extra length creates more volume below, so the Lagoon 55 can be arranged with up to six true double cabins with ensuite heads. “It’s the first time we have six cabins of the same size and function and a larger flybridge,” explains products developments manager Martina Torrini during a premiere virtual tour of the first model to launch in March.

Another first is the curving steps up from the transom skirt to the aft deck, dubbed ‘the stairway to heaven’. “The surfaces of the transom can be used differently,” adds Torrini. “Not just a way to access the boat, they become in themselves a living area.” This feature extends the size of the cockpit to 25m2, and even offers a plancha grill.

There’s more social space on the huge flybridge (with fridge and bar) and a movable sunpad on the forward part of the coachroof. The boat also features Lagoon’s first ever dedicated forward cockpit, connected to the saloon by a drop-down window.

A 107m2 fat-head main provides grunt, but is coupled with a self-tacking jib. As with all Lagoons, the emphasis is on comfort and ease of use rather than speed and windward pointing ability.

LOA: 16.56m / 54ft 4in Beam: 9.00m / 29ft 6in Draught: 1.55m / 5ft 1in Displacement: 26,500kg / 58,433lb Price: €tbc Builder: www.cata-lagoon.com

Fountaine Pajot Samana 59

Replacing the five-year-old Ipanema 58, this luxurious 59-footer integrates many of the new design features of the 45, which boasted longer, wider hulls that nevertheless showed 10% less drag. Chief among the new attractions is an enlarged cockpit, forward lounge and flybridge, for more socialising space.

“We wanted to emphasise her identity by optimising her interior and exterior spaces to make this 59ft catamaran the equivalent of a larger yacht,” explains designer Olivier Racoupeau.

“Whether it’s the flybridge, the cockpit or the saloon, we’ve worked hard to find harmony between all the living spaces on board, to gain every millimetre inside and outside.”

There’s a door forward out of the saloon, and the option of a hydraulic bathing platform, which doubles up for tender storage. Up to six cabins are offered, and the rare option of putting the galley up in the saloon or down to port. Hull number one is joining the World ARC .

Meanwhile, a new 51 is tipped for launch in 2022, which will focus on sustainability and have 2kW of flush solar panels built into the flybridge.

LOA: 18.21m / 59ft 9in Beam: 9.46m / 31ft 1in Draught: 1.40m / 4ft 7in Displacement: 25,500kg / 56,217lb Price ex VAT: €1,302,900 Builder: www.catamarans-fountaine-pajot.com

The new 42 replaces the Leopard 40, and it draws on the latest design thinking from the larger boats in the range. Like the award-winning Leopard 50, it has continuous hull windows, a hardtop, and contrasting coachroof accents. But it also goes further, with plumb bows and long horizontal chines.

That lounging space on the coachroof adds 65% to the exterior entertainment area. “By integrating the geometry of the lounge into the GRP hardtop, we were able to achieve a lightweight area that added less weight to the boat than one average sized crewmember,” explains Michael Robertson, chief designer at builder Robertson & Caine. It has been cleverly engineered so as not to steal headroom from the cockpit.

In contrast to many modern cats, the Leopard 42 makes a virtue of the separate cockpit and saloon, whose seating is focused on the forward galley. There is lots of glazing and a full-height door out onto the foredeck. Every cabin has a third more floor space and twice the glazed area of the old Leopard 40. Each has an island berth and its own heads with shower.

But it’s not all about space. “Performance potential remains one of the top priorities,” says naval architect Alex Simonis of Simonis-Voogd Yacht Design. “We spend a lot of time refining the rig geometry and the sail layout to boost the efficiency of the rig plan. At the same time, the ongoing refinement in hull and appendage design allows us to create a yacht with better sea motion and more agility.

The new entry-level yacht from France’s Neel Trimarans is designed to bring the world of three hulls to a new clientele.

Building on the success of the larger Neel 47 and Neel 51, the 43 takes the fight to the catamaran, with a big superstructure that includes two double cabins as well as a galley and saloon.

There’s a further double cabin forward in the central nacelle, and cosy singles in either bow. A sliding door and window allows the saloon and the cockpit seating areas to be socially connected, although they remain two very different spaces.

The bulkhead helmstation to starboard has commanding views out over the huge coachroof. From the drawings, this appears to allow a tight sheeting angle for the genoa, but brings the mainsheet, which is fastened to the transom, close to the davits and skirt of the central hull.

The main is square-topped with two full battens and there is also a high-performance carbon spar option.

Though the lay-up is in standard foam-cored glassfibre, Neel says it is leaning towards more environmentally friendly construction. Interior joinery is from sustainable Alpi wood and recyclable material.

Marsaudon Composites has quietly built an enthusiastic following for its TS42 and TS50 catamarans since the smaller boat was launched six years ago.

That these have been the first boats to cross the Atlantic in the last two ARC s has also done its reputation no harm.

The yard is based at Lorient La Base, at the heart of the French offshore racing scene, so it’s perhaps no surprise these designs are lightweight and offer plenty of performance.

The direct tiller steering, which gives a responsive feel to the helm, is an example of the thinking that sets these boats apart from other multihulls and makes them sought after models. Yet they also have enough space both on deck and below to offer very comfortable living.

A 57-footer from the board of Marc Lombard will be the third design to join the stable. It shares the same hallmarks as the existing models, although a wheel steering option will also be offered.

In suitable conditions this is a cruising yacht that can be expected to hit speeds of well over 20 knots.

The hull shape is clearly a progression from the earlier models, while following the same light displacement principles with fine hull shapes. Lombard drew a new shape for the bows to increase efficiency and reduce the tendency for bow-down trim. He told us: “The bows are shaped so that, when the boat is powered up and starts to heel, the lee bow will generate extra lift to push the bow up.”

The additional size makes the interior spaces of this boat significantly larger than those of the 50-footer, especially in the hulls. Much thought has also gone into ergonomics and weight saving, stripping out and simplifying anything that is not essential. CEO Damien Cailliau likes to draw on a quote from Colin Chapman, founder of Lotus Cars: “Simplify, then add lightness.”

As an example, there are no hull linings, which saves weight and complication, but requires extremely neat moulding. “A core competency of Marsaudon Composites is that we produce excellent mouldings,” says Cailliau, “so we don’t need to hide our work.”

Seawind 1260: Lightweight catamaran making waves on both sides of the Atlantic

The Seawind 1260 has been well received in the States, where the brand has a strong following, but these multihulls…

As a low volume builder – only 28 of the smaller boats have been built in total – Marsaudon Composites can offer semi-custom interior arrangements, providing they don’t add unnecessary weight. The boat can also be built with varying amounts of carbon to reduce displacement further.

At the same time as announcing this design Marsaudon launched a rebranding of the range, which will now be known as Ocean Rider Catamarans (or ORC). The new name is a better fit with the qualities with which owners identify than the Très Simple concept that led to the original TS designation.

To underscore the difference between these boats and the majority of catamarans in this size range a tiller has been incorporated in the logo.

Tooling for the ORC 57 is under construction and the first boat is scheduled to be unveiled in September 2021.

Current Marine CM46 & CM52

The founder of RS Sailing , Martin Wadhams, is a racing sailor who now spends more and more time cruising.

Martin and his wife, Amanda, enjoy sailing fast boats and have spent some time looking to upgrade from their Pogo 12.50 to a multihull. Their search for a true performance cruising catamaran – and one that wouldn’t cost seven figures – turned out few viable options.

Australian-based designer Jeff Shionning put them onto some fresh designs he has done for Current Marine, a new South African brand formed from an experienced team of composites experts at Knysna, between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth on the south coast.

It has been set up to build the new CM46 and CM52 in low-volume semi-custom production. On visiting the yard a year ago, Wadhams was impressed enough with the high tech builds to order the second CM46.

He reports that the joinery is all laminated in, there is plenty of opportunity for layout customisation (in three or four cabins) and, owing to the lower labour costs in South Africa, pricing is keen.

Shionning’s CM designs are lightweight, efficient catamarans that should be able to sail well in light breeze and outrun weather systems in the open ocean.

Key features include daggerboards, fine bows, centralised weight of engines and tanks, and high bridgedeck clearance. The rig is also positioned amidships for optimum weight centralisation, while also helping to create a large foretriangle for flying a range of furling headsails. Aluminium or carbon spars and diesel or hybrid propulsion are offered.

Wadhams says there is good stowage space and payload capacity for comfortable liveaboard cruising. “They’re built using post-cured epoxy, carbon, E-Glass and PVC foam-cored laminates – a level above mainstream brands,” he insists. “This brings the construction found in a few larger, high-end boats into smaller-size catamarans.” The first CM46 is a full carbon racing version destined for an Auckland-based owner and is due to launch early 2021. The second boat (for Wadhams) has a more cruising-oriented spec.

Seawind 1370

Is this the most popular new design of 2021? Although the first of this new 45ft model is not due to launch until later in the autumn, there has already been a phenomenal uptake in orders.

Publicity has been helped by vloggers Sailing Ruby Rose ordering one of the first boats, but a staggering 55 have been sold already. This has led to the Australian/Vietnamese yard establishing a new technical department that is separate from the production department.

European sales manager Jay Nolan says this 13-strong team is tasked with working up every system on the boat and looking at hybrid solutions.

Outremer 55

A contemporary fast cat set up for short-handed world cruising, Outremer’s exciting new 55 launches this winter.

We previewed this VPLP design in our September issue and hope to test it during the spring. Much focus has been placed on weight and stiffness to help increase performance and ensure the boat can sail in the lightest breezes and therefore rarely need engine power.

DIY Build Your Own Roof Top Carrier

itstillruns article image

When the entire family wants to vacation and there's only the sedan to make the trip, where do we put all the luggage? Well, there's no one on the car roof so let's put it up there! A rooftop carrier is a great way to carry along additional suitcases, boxed up Christmas presents or that cumbersome purchase from the big-box store. Building a rooftop carrier will not only save money but also result in a platform fitted precisely to your car or van.

Wood or metal? Decide what to use to assemble the carrier. Metal is strong and durable but might be more demanding to work and shape in a home workshop. Wood is lightweight and easily cut and fastened together but can wither quickly over time in the weather. Sticking with wood, however, allows readily available hand tools to do the job. When the carrier is assembled, heavy coats of wood paint primer and a sturdy urethane wood deck paint will go a long way toward protecting the carrier from the elements.

The entire carrier will be fashioned from 2-inch by 2-inch square rails. Although pine lumber is inexpensive and abundant, consider using a harder wood such as oak for a quality project. Also needed are five rubber suction-cup feet large enough to fit on each wooden leg. These are available at most home supply stores in the hardware section. Finally, from an auto supply store, buy two adjustable nylon straps to secure the carrier to the car roof.

Using the wood rails, fashion a wide ladder design with each "step" 8 to 10 inches apart. Fasten each rail to three perpendicular rails to act as side frames and a center support. Lay the rail step on top of the side pieces and connect with 3-inch deck screws. At each corner attach a 5-inch "leg" and also one in the middle of the middle support, for a total of five legs. Attach a large suction cup to each leg. A good adhesive to secure the suction "feet" is Dap Weldwood glue. A contact glue, it will secure rubber to wood easily and quickly.

Installation

Place the carrier on top of the car. Just like a toy bow and arrow, moisten the suction cups for a good seal. Use the nylon strapping to further secure the carrier by hooking to the recesses above each car door window.

If an enclosed car carrier is needed, use the ladder frame as the "floor" and add vertical joists 18- to 30-inches high depending on the size you need and then wall with either plywood or aluminum sheeting (available from a building supply dealer). Remember, however, to angle the leading wall of the carrier for better aerodynamics when the car is on the road. Attach the top with hinges on the front edge to provide access to the car carrier.
