Sailing Through History: Unveiling the Rich Legacy of Yacht America

Yacht America History

In the world of sailing, certain vessels transcend the boundaries of time and become legends that leave an indelible mark on maritime history. Among these storied vessels, the sailing yacht “America” stands proudly as a symbol of innovation, speed, and the enduring spirit of adventure. Let’s embark on a journey through the annals of maritime lore as we explore the captivating tale of Yacht America.

The Birth of a Legend

Commissioned by a group of New York Yacht Club members in 1850, Yacht America was designed by George Steers and built by William H. Brown. The goal was clear – to build a vessel that could bring glory to the United States in the inaugural sailing competition against British vessels around the Isle of Wight.

The America’s Cup Victory

In 1851, Yacht America, under the command of Captain Richard Brown, crossed the Atlantic to participate in the Royal Yacht Squadron’s 100 Guinea Cup, a race that would later be known as the America’s Cup. America clinched victory with an 8-minute lead over the second boat, the British Aurora, securing the trophy originally established to commemorate the inaugural universal exhibition in London. Upon hearing of America’s triumph, Queen Victoria purportedly inquired about the second-place boat, receiving the response, “ There is no second, your Majesty, ” highlighting the substantial lead over the runner-up. This declaration is attributed to the inception of the competition’s motto, “ There’s No Second. ” Although the trophy lacked a specific name, being known as the “Hundred Guinea Cup” (the guinea, although no longer legally in circulation at the time, represented 21 shillings or £1.05, making 100 guineas equivalent to £105) or “Queen’s Cup,” it adopted the name of the victorious vessel and subsequently became the renowned “ America’s Cup. “

The Impact on Sailing

Yacht America’s triumph not only marked the inception of the America’s Cup but also left an enduring impact on yacht design and racing. The vessel’s sleek lines, innovative rigging, and overall performance set a new standard for sailing excellence. The schooner’s legacy paved the way for future generations of yacht designers and sailors, influencing the evolution of sailing vessels worldwide.

After the America’s Cup

In 1856, the vessel underwent a name change to Camilla. Subsequently, seized as a war prize in 1860 by the Confederate States of America, it was rechristened Memphis. Following the conclusion of the American Civil War, the ship was intentionally sunk in Jacksonville in 1862. Salvaged, refurbished, and reintegrated into service with the US Navy under the moniker America, it was equipped with three bronze Dahlgren cannons and played a role in the blockade of Southern ports. Its active service continued until 1873, when it was retired and sold to Benjamin Franklin Butler, a former general and politician. Butler maintained the vessel in operational condition and entered it in various races.

sailing

After his passing, it changed hands multiple times until it underwent restoration in 1921 through the America Restoration Fund. The restored ship was then gifted to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis , where, unfortunately, proper maintenance was lacking. On March 29, 1942, the structure housing the ship collapsed under the weight of a heavy snowfall, causing additional damage. Subsequently, both the wreckage of the structure and the vessel itself were incinerated in 1945.

Sailing Experience Aboard Yacht America

For those fortunate enough to experience sailing aboard a replica or participate in events commemorating Yacht America, the thrill is unparalleled. The vessel’s graceful lines and historical significance create an immersive experience that connects sailors with the roots of competitive yachting. Whether cruising along the coast or participating in regattas, sailing on a vessel inspired by Yacht America is a unique journey through maritime history. Conclusion: As we sail through the 21st century, the legacy of Yacht America endures as a beacon for sailors and enthusiasts alike. From its groundbreaking victory in 1851 to the continued reverence it commands today, Yacht America remains an iconic symbol of American maritime prowess and the timeless allure of sailing. So, raise the sails, catch the wind, and let the spirit of Yacht America carry you on a voyage through the pages of nautical history. Fair winds!

‘No kings in America’: Biden slams U.S. Supreme Court ruling granting Trump immunity

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

President Joe Biden delivers remarks at the White House on July 1, 2024, following the Supreme Court’s ruling on charges against former President Donald Trump that he sought to subvert the 2020 election. The highest court ruled 6-3 that presidents have some level of immunity from prosecution when operating within their “constitutional authority,” but do not have absolute immunity. (Photo by Andrew Harnik/Getty Images)

Monday’s U.S. Supreme Court decision granting the presumption of criminal immunity for official actions taken by a president fundamentally altered U.S. democracy, President Joe Biden said from the White House Monday evening.

Speaking for less than five minutes, Biden said the 6-3 decision contradicted the spirit of the country’s founding — set to be celebrated nationwide this week on the Fourth of July — that no one is above the law.

“This nation was founded on the principle that there are no kings in America,” Biden said. “Each of us is equal before the law. No one — no one — is above the law, not even the president of the United States.”

The immunity decision, written by Chief Justice John Roberts for the court’s conservative majority, undermined that principle, Biden said.

Biden added that the decision would almost certainly mean a jury would not decide the criminal case accusing former President Donald Trump of conspiring to illegally overturn his 2020 loss before November’s election, which Biden called a “disservice to the American people.”

Roberts opinion

The ruling tasked a federal trial court with determining which actions then-President Trump took seeking to overturn the 2020 presidential election were conducted as “official” acts of the president. Those actions are entitled to “the presumption of immunity,” Roberts wrote.

The ruling protected the power of an office that itself makes up an entire branch of government, Roberts said, and was consistent with the constitutional framers’ view that the president has broad powers and responsibilities.

“Accounting for that reality — and ensuring that the President may exercise those powers forcefully, as the Framers anticipated he would — does not place him above the law,” Roberts wrote. “It preserves the basic structure of the Constitution.”

But Biden called the decision “a dangerous precedent” that would give presidents nearly unrestrained power.

“The power of the president will no longer be constrained by the law, even by the Supreme Court of the United States,” he said. “The only limits will be self-imposed by the president alone.”

Biden invoked the example of George Washington, who he said restrained the power of the presidency, and pledged he would continue to “respect the limits of the presidential powers.”

But, he said, the ruling empowered future presidents, possibly including Trump, to ignore the law.

Jan. 6 attack

Biden said Trump was responsible for the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol that disrupted the certification of Biden’s defeat of Trump in the 2020 election. Trump’s efforts to undermine the election results, culminating in the Jan. 6 attack, are the subject of the federal indictment the former president challenged by asserting presidential immunity.

“Four years ago, my predecessor sent a violent mob to the U.S. Capitol to stop the peaceful transfer of power,” Biden said. “We all saw with our own eyes. We saw what happened that day … I think it’s fair to say it’s one of the darkest days in U.S. history. Now, the man who sent that mob to the U.S. Capitol is facing potential criminal conviction.”

Biden, whose reelection campaign was still reeling Monday from a debate performance against Trump last week described even by Democrats as poor , called on voters to “do what the court should have been willing to do but would not,” and reject Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, at the ballot box.

The president endorsed Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s forceful dissent in the case, quoting her phrase that the majority opinion fueled “fear for our democracy” and urging voters, too, to dissent.

CHAMPAGNE SAILING AT SPIRIT YACHTS’ OWNERS REGATTA

Spirit C72 Gwenhyfar II scooped the overall regatta trophy at this year’s Spirit Yachts owners’ regatta in Guernsey, Channel Islands. Modern classic 22m sloop Gwenhyfar II triumphed after a closely fought, six-race series, seeing off strong competition from Spirit R52 Happy Forever and Spirit C65 Chloe Giselle .

Hosted in partnership with Locate Guernsey , the bi-annual regatta was based at Guernsey Yacht Club in the heart of the Channel Islands. Despite stormy conditions making for challenging delivery trips to the island, the weather settled down for the regatta and the yachts enjoyed 15-20 knots and sunshine for most of the week.

Overseen by experienced race officer Peter Saxton and a team of volunteers from Guernsey Yacht Club, the racing programme delivered a series of windward leeward courses in the Little Russel Channel and longer passage races around Herm and Sark islands.

Spirit Yachts’ Managing Director Karen Underwood commented, “What a fantastic week! Champagne sailing in a beautiful location; the perfect conditions for our owners, crew and guests to enjoy these elegant yachts to their fullest, share stories, and make new friendships.”

Owner of the winning yacht, Spirit C72 Gwenhyfar II commented, “A great week on the water and ashore, Guernsey really was at its best. Spirit organised a fantastic programme, which was flawlessly executed, thank you to everyone involved for a truly memorable week.”

Gwenhyfar II also won Class 1 and Spirit R52 Happy Forever made it five class wins from six races to claim Class 2. Highest Placed Female helm went to Chloe Giselle and newly launched Spirit C72 Elvis picked up the “Spirit of the Regatta” prize for embracing the spirit of the event both on and off the water.

The racing was complemented by a variety of social activities including a sunset BBQ on Herm Island, Nyetimber champagne bar on the dockside provided by Pantaenius Insurance , and charity Optimist racing on the regatta lay day to raise funds for Guernsey Sailing Trust .

Jo Stoddart, Director of Locate Guernsey added, “It was a pleasure to welcome the Spirit fleet and guests to Guernsey for such a fabulous week. They embraced Guernsey life to the full during their stay, both out on the water and on the island. We were delighted to give many local inhabitants the opportunity to step onboard these beautiful modern classic yachts and we look forward to seeing several of them back in Guernsey soon.”

The event was sponsored by a raft of well-known marine brands including WEST SYSTEM , Lewmar , OneSails , Pantaenius , and Oceanskies , with support from Hattiers Rum .

Under pressure on plane safety, Boeing is buying stressed supplier Spirit for $4.7 billion

ARLINGTON, Va. — Boeing announced plans to acquire key supplier Spirit AeroSystems for $4.7 billion, a move that it says will improve plane quality and safety amid increasing scrutiny by Congress, airlines and the Department of Justice.

Boeing previously owned Spirit, and the purchase would reverse a longtime Boeing strategy of outsourcing key work on its passenger planes. That approach has been criticized as problems at Spirit disrupted production and delivery of popular Boeing jetliners, including 737s and 787s.

“We believe this deal is in the best interest of the flying public, our airline customers, the employees of Spirit and Boeing, our shareholders and the country more broadly,” Boeing President and CEO Dave Calhoun said in a statement late Sunday.

Concerns about safety came to a head after the Jan. 5 blowout of a panel on an Alaska Airlines 737 Max 9 at 16,000 feet (4,876 meters) over Oregon. The Federal Aviation Administration soon after announced increased oversight of Boeing and Spirit, which supplied the fuselage for the plane.

No one was seriously injured in the Alaska Airlines door incident, which terrified passengers, but Boeing is under pressure from the U.S. Justice Department to plead guilty to criminal fraud in connection with two deadly plane crashes involving its 737 Max jetliners more than five years ago.

Boeing has until the end of the week to accept or reject the offer, which includes the giant aerospace company agreeing to an independent monitor who would oversee its compliance with anti-fraud laws, according to several people who heard federal prosecutors detail a proposed offer Sunday.

The Justice Department said in a May court filing that Boeing violated terms of a 2021 settlement allowing the company to avoid prosecution for actions leading up to the crashes in Ethiopia and Indonesia, which killed 346 people.

Those crashes were blamed on a faulty sensor in a flight-control system and the investigation is separate from the probe of the more recent Alaska Airlines blowout, which involved Spirit.

Boeing spun off Spirit, which is based in Wichita, Kansas, and not related to Spirit Airlines, in 2005. In recent years, quality problems have mounted, including fuselage panels that didn’t fit together precisely enough and holes that were improperly drilled.

Spirit removed its CEO in October and replaced him with Patrick Shanahan, a former Boeing executive who served as acting defense secretary in the Trump administration.

Things seemed to be going more smoothly until the Alaska Airlines incident. Investigators said a panel used in place of an extra emergency door had been removed at a Boeing factory to let Spirit workers fix damaged rivets, and bolts that help hold the panel in place were missing after the repair job. It is not clear who removed the bolts and failed to put them back.

Spirit said in May that it was laying off about 450 workers at its Wichita plant because of a production slowdown since the January incident. Its total workforce was just over 13,000 people.

“Bringing Spirit and Boeing together will enable greater integration of both companies’ manufacturing and engineering capabilities, including safety and quality systems,” Shanahan said.

The acquisition’s equity value of $4.7 billion is $37.25 per share, while the total value of the deal is around $8.3 billion, which includes Spirit’s last reported net debt, the aerospace company said.

Boeing common stock will be exchanged for Spirit shares according to a variable formula that depends on a weighted average of the share price over a 15-trading-day period ending on the second day before the deal closes, Boeing said.

The companies also announced an agreement with Airbus to negotiate the purchase of Spirit assets involved with programs operated by the European aerospace firm. The Airbus agreement is set to commence when Boeing’s acquisition of Spirit is completed, the two U.S. companies said.

Shares of both companies rose by more than 3% Monday.

  • Boeing will buy Spirit AeroSystems, a subsidiary it spun off in 2009.
  • Spirit produces 737 fuselages for Boeing, and was partly responsible for the manufacturing of the Max 9 that lost a door plug during an Alaska Airlines flight in January.

The deal is still subject to regulatory approvals, and Boeing said it likely won't be fully closed until mid-2025.

Boeing will buy Spirit AeroSystems, a subsidiary it spun off in 2009, as the planemaker works to get a handle on its production quality.

Spirit produces 737 fuselages for Boeing and was partly responsible for the manufacturing of the Max 9 that lost a door plug during an Alaska Airlines flight in January.

Boeing agreed on Sunday to acquire Spirit AeroSystems for $37.25 per share in an all-stock deal that values the supplier at more than $4 billion, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

The $37.25 deal price values Spirit Aero at $4.7 billion, according to Boeing.

“We believe this deal is in the best interest of the flying public, our airline customers, the employees of Spirit and Boeing, our shareholders and the country more broadly,” Boeing President and CEO Dave Calhoun said in a statement. “By reintegrating Spirit, we can fully align our commercial production systems, including our Safety and Quality Management Systems, and our workforce to the same priorities, incentives and outcomes – centered on safety and quality.”

Spirit also produces some components for Airbus A220s and A350s, and Airbus will acquire some segments of the manufacturer's business for $1. Airbus will be compensated $559 million as part of the transaction.

Former UNA golfer leads Daikin Spirit of America after round two

DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — Through the first two rounds of the 58th Daikin Spirit of America golf tournament, we’ve seen two different young men with deep roots to the state of Alabama sit at the top of the leaderboard.

Hoover native and former UNA golfer Carter Goodwin finished round two sitting at ten under par after finishing with a 65 on Thursday. Goodwin heads into the third round with an impressive seven-stroke lead.

Like father, like son: Lakers select Bronny James in NBA Draft

There’s a lot of golf left to be played at Burningtree Country Club, so how is Goodwin keeping his head on straight and focusing mentally on the rest of the tournament?

“Fortunately in my career I’ve been in positions like this before so really drawing on that experience and really staying present. One shot at a time and not getting worried about the next hole or the next shot… it’s just focus on the shot that’s in front of you, give it the best effort you can, get the best shot you can at the moment, go find the next one and do it again,” Goodwin said.

Goodwin is a veteran of the Daikin Spirit of America tournament and he gave high praise to the tournament and the course.

“I’ve played this course a lot. I went to Wallace State Community College first and then I played at North Alabama as well so since I got to Wallace State I’ve been playing in this tournament. We played a lot of college tournaments out here as well and I’ve gotten to know this course really well. I love this place. I think it fits my game really well and when the putter gets hot it’s a lot of fun.”

News 19’s coverage of the Daikin Spirit of America continues with round three on Friday.

Do more complex yachts mean owners need to upskill?

Yachting World

  • July 2, 2024

Long considered one of the last bastions of freedom, sailing has an enduring Corinthian spirit, with yacht owners often taking great pride in learning from experience and working things out for themselves. But, with yachts becoming more complex than ever, is it time to invite the experts on board?

spirit of america yacht

What it takes to run a happy, safe – and hopefully fast – yacht demands a diverse range of skills, knowledge, and experience. As a baseline, RYA courses offer an excellent framework to build on, but first-time yacht owners tend to realise quickly how much is not covered, and particularly how much they need to know that is specific to the model of yacht they have bought.

With first time yacht owners increasingly ambitious in their plans, many planning bluewater adventures for their first yacht, the option of getting some expert tuition aboard your own boat is well worth exploring. Inherently flexible, shaped around the specific requirements of the owner, tuition at a one-to-one level is also far more intensive than the usual 1:4 – or more – students commonly found on a sailing course.

Knowledge download

Peter Sterling’s sailing CV is, by anyone’s standards, extensive; 400,000 miles at sea, including 39 Atlantic crossings and skippering two Clipper Round the World Race entries. The latter is perhaps the best indication of his skillset and temperament when it comes to helping others, with varying levels of experience, get the most out of their yacht Together with his wife Su, Peter formed PSA Prime Marine (psaprimemarine.com) on the south coast of England with the aim of making his experience available to others, seeing that many were struggling to find more than generic yacht training.

He explains: “Our biggest advantage is that we shape everything to what the owner needs. Sometimes I step on board as the yacht is leaving the yard brand new. I spend a good length of time with them getting used to the fundamentals, perhaps over the course of a week, then come back a few weeks later and undertake their first long passage with them after they have had some time to enjoy the boat on their own. By that time, they’ll have found what they want to tackle and work through. We’re not working to any fixed framework.”

Sterling recently did this for the owner of a new Hallberg-Rassy 50, sailing with the owner and his wife from the Hallberg-Rassy yard locally before bringing the boat back to the UK.

“A delivery like that is a great opportunity to really learn the yacht inside and out, in real world conditions, so it’s a huge confidence booster for the owner. They get to see that the boat can do what it was built to do, usually in less than perfect conditions.

“Unlike a normal delivery, we are prioritising the learning, rather than getting from A to B as quickly as possible. In a warranty period for a new boat we can also put together a comprehensive snags list which I can help ensure the owner is really well informed about when they take it back to the yacht builder.”

Helping hand

James Lawlor ordered a new Southerly 47 after sailing on the Clipper Round the World Race as crew in 2014, where he had got to know Pete as his skipper on a leg from Australia to China.

“I ordered the 47 while I was still finishing training for the Clipper Race, with a long-term view to sailing when I got back. Taking part in the Clipper was an adventure for me personally, while the Southerly was part of a broader retirement plan which very much included my wife. We wanted a comfortable and safe boat for Med cruising.

Second hand boats: Buying a yacht to upgrade

Among brokerage listings it’s rare to see a yacht openly advertised as ‘work needed’. After an initial conversation, the potential…

“In some ways we were part of what I believe is a wave of owners that buy one big boat rather than working up through ownership of increasingly large boats. With our decision though, came a very steep learning curve.” Lawlor, like many new owners, was looking to get to grips with his new yacht fast, so he could enjoy his purchase and feel confident. He found himself disappointed by the handover given by the manufacturer. “Southerly gave me a day on board, which, I thought, for a yacht I paid a lot for, was lacking. I engaged a couple of other skippers before Pete became available, but what he brought on board was much more; not just a breadth of knowledge, but a brilliant delivery of it – always, always, calm! My confidence grew so much and in such a short space of time.

“We tackled teething problems on the boat that needed fixing while moving the boat at the same time to a new cruising ground. As Southerly also went bust, Pete became even more invaluable. When sailing I learned by talking things through, he would nudge me to coming to the right conclusions myself, rather than saying outright that there was one way to do things.”

James found the experience and knowledge imparted by Pete Sterling invaluable, but questions why it’s not something engaged by more manufacturers as standard.

spirit of america yacht

Bringing an expert onboard can help with writing a detailed maintenance and snagging list, or setting up new gear such as sails. Photo: Richard Langdon

“I think my experience with a boatbuilder in financial difficulties at the time was particularly bad, but the reality is that there is so much to learn, you really need at least a week of handover from a builder. Ideally a manufacturer handover would involve an initial week on board, then additional input of a few days each week as the owner gets used to the boat on their own, being able to call on that support.

“In the long run it’s going to get you up to speed so much quicker if you start off right.”

Since engaging Pete, James has also brought him on board for Biscay crossings, in the Mediterranean, and when the yacht ended up in Sardinia due to Covid 19 lockdowns and needed work doing before she could be sailed away.

“While, to some, I might appear to have quite a bit of experience, the reality is that I want to really enjoy the sailing we do. Knowing Pete is on the end of the phone was invaluable when we were cruising the Med and in many ways that was a big part of the ongoing learning.

“That, of course, is the real reality of boat ownership. There’s no fixed course that covers it!” explains James.

Third-place finish is a start for refitted ‘spirit of america’.

After disappointments during the first two 1988 American Power Boat Association races, John Antonelli’s Spirit of America proved the third time was a charm.

Antonelli’s Open Division-rated powerboat, a 38-foot Cougar catamaran powered by twin 750 horsepower engines Antonelli said can reach speeds of more than 120 mph, finished third at the Popeye’s Grand Prix. It was its best finish of the season.

It was the only finish of the year for Antonelli and throttleman Craig Maudsley of Miami.

“It was a miracle we finished the race,” Antonelli said.

Spirit of America, which underwent a complete refitting earlier this year, did not finish at New Orleans the past two years. In 1987, a tie bar (which holds the two outdrivers together so they can run as one unit) broke. In 1986, the boat’s lower unit (propulsion section) was dislodged.

Antonelli, 44, a real estate developer in Washington, D.C., and Fort Lauderdale, owns and drives the $500,000-plus Spirit of America. The powerboat averaged 89.33 mph at New Orleans.

“It wasn’t great, but we finished and that’s what was important,” Antonelli said.

There still is room for improvement. Antonelli and Maudsley finished behind Canada Homes Challenge, driven by Lorne Leibel of Toronto (102.63 mph), and Special Edition, skippered by John D’Elia of Cos Cob, Conn. (100.57).

Because of engine troubles at races in Marathon and Fort Myers, Spirit of America has earned only 379 points toward the national offshore high point standings. At Marathon, Spirit of America blew a piston. At Fort Myers, the engines would not fire.

“Both problems were caused by the same condition,” said Antonelli, 1987 Rookie of the Year. “We had problems with couplings on our fuel injector’s mechanical brain. We changed from aluminum to steel couplings since then and it appears to be working much better.

“Everything is totally new in the boat, and usually when you do that you have to take a solid year to work out all the kinks before you can be competitive. Hopefully, we’re a lot closer to where we want to be than we thought at this stage.”

Swiftsure Motor Yachts, which placed fifth in New Orleans under driver Bob Kaiser of Detroit and throttleman Errol Lanier of Fort Lauderdale, leads the national point standings (943). Kaiser and Lanier won the first two races, but only lead Canada Homes Challenge by one point.

The next APBA race is July 3 in Sarasota. Five more races are scheduled, including the Class I and II World Championships at Guernsey, England in September, before the World Cup Championships Nov. 8, 10 and 12 in Key West.

“We’ve been pointing toward Sarasota since last year when we won it,” Antonelli said. “We also have a surprise for everybody that should be ready by the first of July.”

Antonelli said he and his crew have developed a propulsion system that will enable Spirit of America’s two Kramer engines an additional 150 horsepower.

“Let’s just say it should make us competitive,” Antonelli said.

— Corbin and Mona Dyer of Enterprise won $600 for catching bass weighing 33 pounds, 13 ounces during the first C. Scott Driver Memorial Tournament at Okee-tantie State Park near Okeechobee.

Steve Porter and Jim Fowler of Okeechobee (27 pounds, 13 ounces) won $375 for second but donated the money to the fund-raising event. About $2,700 was raised for the Driver family from $75 entry fees during the catch-and-release tournament. Driver was a conservationist and hunting and fishing guide from Okeechobee who recently died of leukemia at 45.

“Scott was a true conservationist, and I know he would have enjoyed everyone enjoying a day in his honor on the lake,” said longtime friend Burt Crowell of Deerfield Beach.

Bill Morgan and Ray Davino of Okeechobee (27 pounds, 4 ounces) finished third, followed by John Walker and Bob Hoover of Miami (23-3); Dennis Simpson and Paul Michelz of Okeechobee (20-1); and Jack Eiche and Danny Stinnett of Okeechobee (18-11).

Russ Bringger of Pompano Beach and Joe Hubbard of Boca Raton tied for big fish with bass weighing 6 pounds, 2 ounces.

— French sailor Philippe Poupon’s 60-foot trimaran has slowed from 15 to 6.5 knots, but he can still break his 4-year-old record in this year’s Carlsberg Single Handed Transatlantic Yacht Race.

As of 4:42 a.m. Tuesday, Poupon, aboard the 60-foot trimaran Fleury Michon, was 348 miles away from the finish line in Newport, R.I., said race spokeswoman Betsy Holman. He had slowed considerably, probably because of diminishing winds, she said.

If Poupon continues at the same slow pace, he will arrive this afternoon or evening, she said.

But the later arrival will still break Poupon’s 1984 record of 16 1/2 days from Plymouth, England, to Newport in the 3,000-mile race, Holman said. If he arrives today, the trip will have taken him 10 days.

— Gentry Eagle, the 110-foot powerboat owned by Tom Gentry of Honolulu, delayed its departure once again due to inclement weather. Gentry is attempting to break the record from Miami to New York, which is 19 houurs and 31 minutes.
