Diesel “Equivalency”
- Electric propulsion is very defined as it has a flat torque curve (torque is rotational power). When comparing electric to diesel, electric is superior at slow to medium and equal to diesel at higher RPMs.

FAQ - There is only one question! Will Electric Propulsion work for me?
Not for everone!
The typical electric boat will have the same range as if they left the dock with about 1.5 to 2 gallons of fuel. If you sailed 20 times and used less than 20gallons of fuel - it great. If you sailed 20 times and used 200 gallons of fuel, buy a powerboat.
Electric propulsion will give the sailor another tool to use when sailing. Add a little power and you can sail faster and point higher.Not for all.
In the marina and around the dock much safer - ultra speed control - forward to reverse and back - quiet to talk to the crew and those on the dock - quiet to help setting an anchor.

Brooklin Boatyard, Brooklin, ME
Design Comments:
The commission for Equipose came from a repeat customer of both this office and of Brooklin Boatyard. During the summers on the east coast he sails Dreadnought , the first of our three T49c designs, out of Southwest Harbor, Maine. In the winter on the west coast, he has been sailing a BBW 47 out of Marina del Rey that he decided to replace with a boat that is a lot faster and less challenging to maintain (via less brightwork) in the hot SoCal sun.
Dreadnought (along with her near sisters Blackfish and Rascal ) is long and lean and an upwind oriented boat. Equipoise is a foot longer on the water, a bit beamier (especially aft) and 3,500 pounds lighter, so she will be substantially faster cracked off, reaching, and running. The shape of her immersed volume forward is quite similar to that of Sforzando , an earlier 44 foot race boat that was a perennial winner in both IMS and IRC, but aft the new boat is considerably broader and more powerful. She will be club raced frequently, so the focus is on performance throughout, with hull, appendage, and rig detailing that is state of the art. However, she will also be daysailed routinely, and for ease of handling shorthanded, she features electrically driven main and headsail furling, as well as electric winches. Her styling is a lively mix of contemporary racer (with more stem rake forward and overhang aft) with a timeless Spirit of Tradition cabin house. We have been referring to her as a ‘performance day boat’.
The hull and deck are constructed with the cold molded wood/epoxy technique for which Brooklin Boatyard is justifiably famous. The hull features tongue and groove larch planking each side of diagonal paulonia veneers, while the deck is a sandwich of Okoume plywood over 5/8” thick CoreCell foam. The hull is overlaid with an e-glass finish layer. The stem, keelson, and ring frames are laminated Port Orford cedar. The keel loads are supported and distributed by a grid of laminated keel floors that are capped with unidirectional carbon fiber. Cold molded wood construction results in high strength and toughness relative to weight, and it is doubly attractive in that it also provides very impressive acoustic and thermal insulation. A noteworthy feature of Equipoise is her electric drive auxiliary, powered by lithium ion batteries that will be charged via solar cells and shore power. The interior is exquisitely detailed in a classic ‘Herreshoff’ style, with off-white painted surfaces trimmed with brightwork highlights that are a Brooklin Boatyard trademark.
The light weight construction of Equipose allows a high ballast/displacement ratio, that combined with a carbon rig, provides ample stability to support a generous sailplan. The large foretriangle is filled with a 106% overlap jib that is managed by an underdeck Selden electric furler . The main traveller is controlled by a Harken ‘Flatwinder 250’ line driver, and the hydraulic backstay pump is electrically driven as well. Downwind, asymmetricals and Code sails will be tacked to the end of a 3foot carbon fiber bowsprit.
Her unusual combination of eclectic style with contemporary performance will make her a stand out from the crowd, and ahead of the pack, in Southern California.
A 3-d surface model for the hull, deck, cabin house, cockpit and appendages is part of the design package, as well as 2-d drawings for the layout and structure. The Brooklin Boatyard design office then melds these together into one 3-d model that details virtually every component to be installed in the boat.
Each tongue and groove larch plank is bonded with epoxy resin to the next, as well as to the laminated keelson, the keel floors, many of the permanent internal panels, and some temporary forms where needed.
The off axis paulonia veneers are laid over, and bonded to, the tongue and groove inside skin. An outside skin of larch at 0-degree will follow.
The keel floors are capped with a thick layer of unidirectional carbon fiber.
Auxiliary power in a box! Two Electric Yacht motors are mounted to a Twin Disc strut drive, and are powered by lithium iron batteries that are charged via shore power and by solar panels located on the aft deck. Compared to a diesel, the equipment is more expensive, but the installation hours are much lower, so the installed costs are similar. The weight of the electric system with its batteries is less than that of the diesel engine with its fuel and exhaust systems, as well.
The footprint of the electric drive unit (note the orange supply lines) is impressively small. No fuel system and tank, no exhaust system. Also, no trips to the fuel dock, no smell, no emissions, and no noise. (There are a lot of batteries, of course!) Range is a constraint, just as it is with electric cars, but this will undoubtedly increase as battery technology continues to improve. Electric looks like the way of the future, both at sea and on the highway.
The keel went on early in this project, as raising the hull suited the multi-level layout of the Brooklin Boatyard shop. The leading edge strake and trailing edge fillet reduce interference drag around the keel root. The tapered laminate for the ‘box’ style bilge sump is evident, as is its opening in the hull.
The drawing showed a straight vertical inboard edge to the second bulkhead, but the crew thought it would look much better if it were cut away to match that of the main bulkhead. They drew their version with a marker, and they were right, of course. This is just one example of why it is so important (and so much fun!) to work with people that you know and respect, and that you trust to speak up when they have a better idea.
The bosses for the deck hardware are in place, and the bases for the lifeline stanchions are being fitted.
The next stop is the paint shop. Splashdown is getting closer every day.

Sortable/Searchable Table
At the bottom of the page is a table that can be searched if you know you are looking for a certain type of motor (i.e. pod or saildrive), a certain power range, or for a specific weight/length of boat. If you are going to use the table, the page is best viewed on a computer rather than mobile or tablet.
Illustrated Guide
The motors are organized in alphabetical order by manufacturer, then by style of motor, i.e. fixed pod, steerable pod, saildrive and then by power of motor within those listing. For many styles there are multiple powers of motor available and where that is the case we have made it as easy as possible to line up the motor with its specifications. i.e. if there are three power of motor with different weights, it will be noted as kW: 2kw, 2kw, 3kw • Weight: 10kg, 12kg, 15kg. For some manufacturers the variations are more complicated and we have done our best to make it simple and understandable.
There is a lot of variety in the way manufacturers detail the technical attributes of their products. We have tried to take the most common measurements and assemble an ‘apples to apples’ comparison. See the notes below in ‘Measurements’
The photographs and drawings are from the manufacturers’ websites and are not shown in any consistent scale.
kW • Voltage • Current • HP: Not all manufacturers list all of these specifications. We have included the specifications available and where not available have used the notation N/A.
kW is the kW rating provided by the manufacturer. Most websites do not indicate whether it is input or output kW. When it is indicated, we took the output.
Voltage is most often referred on the sites as ‘Voltage’. Some indicate nominal or peak, we have used nominal and indicated if peak is also referenced.
Current Is noted when the manufacturer supplies the information. Generally it is measured in amperes: A. In some cases the manufacturer uses Amp Hours: Ah and we have noted it where that is used.
HP : is ‘HorsePower equivalent’ so that you can get an idea of the power of the motor in comparison to a HP rating you might be more familiar with. Where available, these measurements come from the manufacturer’s website, and different manufacturers measure the HP in different ways. Some even use metric horsepower, which is slightly different from imperial horsepower. Again, we have tried to make it as apples to apples as possible. (For general guidance, 1kW is round one and a third HP 1kW=1.3HP, or the reverse is that 1HP is around three quarters of a kW: 1 HP = .75kW).
Static Thrust. Torque, Efficiency: This is probably the specification that has the most variability. We have simply given whatever information the manufacturer has published on their website, when available.
Range and Running Time : We have not included estimates of range or running time because it depends on too many factors: battery size (sometimes type also), water conditions, speed, etc. The exceptions are for the ePropulsion and Torqeedo models which have batteries from the manufacturers specifically matched to the motors and therefore provide estimates on their websites.
General : If a manufacturer publishes a specification, we have tried to include it here, even tough other manufacturers may not include the same type of measurement.

Bellmarine is a very well established electric boat motor company with a history going back to 1999. Along the way they merged with a battery accessory manufacturer and have now been purchased by Transfluid, a large scale industrial motor manufacturer. Kräutler is a long-established Austrian manufacturer of industrial electric motors. They began construction of electric boat motors in the 80’s mainly because they could not find a product that would live up to the standards of founder Oswald Kräutler. They make motors for industrial and ship use as well as recreational boats and probably offer the widest range of sailpods and saildrives on this page with everything from small .5kW steerable pods to electrically rotatable saildrives with power up to 30kW.
An explanation about the Kräutler section of this guide: The Kräutler fixed pods are available with AC motors (ACV) or DC motors (GPV). The AC are for smaller boats. Oceanvolt Servoprop Saildrive
The Oceanvolt ServoProp is a patented variable pitch sail drive that ‘combines a high efficiency sail drive with the most powerful hydro generator on the market’. Unique feature is the possibility to turn the propeller blades more than 180 degrees. The software controlled variable pitch sail drive adjusts the pitch of the propeller blades automatically so that the power generation and power output are optimal. SeaDrive is a Norwegian manufacturer that has an innovative approach to pods, saildrives and all electric boat motors for which they received a nomination for a 2019 DAME Award. The concept is that the basic motors can be configured: fixed pods, steerable pod, a saildrive or lift-up azimuth side pod – also with the ability to have the propellers arranged for push propulsion or pull propulsion. There are also regenerative versions available. The pod motor systems come in three power ratings: 7.5, 15 and 30.
