Billionaire's superyacht refit big boost for Auckland
Share this article

Australian billionaire James Packer has brought his 87.5-metre superyacht Arctic P to Auckland for a refit that could mean upwards of $10 million for the local economy.
The giant vessel - the 50th largest yacht in the world - is berthed at Wynyard Quarter where it is expected to stay for at least six months.
The arrival of Packer's yacht is a blessing for the Auckland marine industry after losing the $50 million refit of billionaire Graeme Hart's superyacht to Whangarei.
The Packer vessel, which has hosted celebrities such as Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in the past, has been hanging about Auckland ports since October.
Industry insiders confirmed this week it had been moved to Wynyard Quarter for a refit, its first since 2008.
Packer this week opened up in an emotional television interview about the last words from his father, Australian media mogul Kerry Packer, from who he inherited the yacht upon his death in 2005.
Details of the work to the vessel have been kept confidential but research on superyacht refits suggests Arctic P will result in a multimillion-dollar benefit for Auckland.
It is likely to be a smaller project than the refit of the 77-metre yacht Weta - known as U77 - owned by Hart, New Zealand's richest man.
Weta was towed to Port Nikau in Northland last week after local firm Culham Engineering was believed to have offered a better deal for what is reportedly the largest yacht refit the country has seen.
Hart's superyacht had been in Auckland for more than a year and those in the marine industry are keeping mum on the reasons behind his decision to have it finished in Whangarei, where the port has been dredged to accommodate the large vessel.
Whangarei councillor Brian McLachlan, who praised Culham Engineering for luring the Weta refit, said he understood Hart's decision to be based on where he could get the most cost-effective work.
Drury-based Nautical Contracting had been working on the Weta while it was in Auckland and last reported in February last year that its work was continuing.
The company's website said "2011 was a tough year in the global superyacht industry and for the boatbuilding scene in New Zealand. But we are pleased to say there are encouraging signs for the year ahead".
Nautical Contracting managers would not comment on the Weta's move north this week.
Refurbishing superyachts was a lucrative industry for Auckland, NZ Marine Industry Association executive director Peter Busfield said.
Research by NZ Marine has found a typical refit for a 40m yacht resulted in $5m spent in the industry and another $1m spent on tourism in the city hosting the owners, representatives, guests and crew.
Auckland has about a 90 per cent share of the superyacht refit business in New Zealand, and the cost of a refit can vary from $1m up to $30m.
Mr Busfield said there were efforts to double the number of superyacht refits being done in New Zealand over the next three years.
"Only cities that have a highly skilled marine industry workforce and special marine facilities such as we have in Auckland can hope to attract this international business," Mr Busfield said.
"Of the 7000 superyachts internationally we believe that 1000 of these are wishing for, or are due for, a refit.
"New Zealand attracts approximately 25 refits per year and with [New Zealand Trade and Enterprise] assistance we have a strategy ... to entice more than double this number over the next three years."
Mr Busfield said superyachts were normally attracted to New Zealand as a cruising destination and then later becoming aware of the world-class workmanship the local marine industry provides.

Superyachts allowed into New Zealand for refit and repair
A new provision allows for superyachts booked in for repair or refit work to apply to enter the country's maritime borders….
Previous SuperyachtNews coverage questioned whether the COVID-19 pandemic would have a significant impact on superyacht attendance for the 36th America’s Cup, set to take place from 6 to 21 March, 2021 in Auckland. With New Zealand's borders closed since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been concerns as to whether foreign vessels would be allowed entry into the country in time for the event.
The New Zealand government recently announced a new provision that allows for vessels, including superyachts, booked in for repair or refit works in the country to apply to enter the country’s maritime borders. “Currently the applications to enter through our maritime borders is for a compelling need for refit and repair,” explains Duthie Lidgard, managing director of Catalano Shipping Services NZ .
“We have been successful with the applications for five vessels to date and another eight applications are currently awaiting approval, which we are expecting in the coming weeks. Currently, we are fielding so many new requests from yachts looking at getting to New Zealand to escape Europe and we are working on their arrival plans and approval options.”
“Currently, we are fielding so many new requests from yachts looking at getting to New Zealand to escape Europe and we are working on their arrival plans and approval options.”
The refit and repair exemption was activated in July 2020, with the first superyacht making use of it S/Y Marie, for a scheduled refit approved on 27 July. The operative word in the provision is ‘compelling’ – the bar to qualify for an exemption has been set high to avoid creating an unwanted ‘back door’ into New Zealand as many yachts are still keen to visit the country in time for the America's Cup.
“COVID-19 has impacted the globe – we have seen a drop off in yachts coming to New Zealand only because they have been unable to come via other islands as stopovers on the way,” adds Lidgard. “Since French Polynesia opened its borders to visiting yachts and owners, we have seen a surge of interest again due to the America’s Cup.”
But there are still barriers for superyacht owners and guests entering the country, with a mandatory 14-day isolation period on arrival in New Zealand. “There is a substantial effort from both the marine and tourism industries to create a watertight process for HNWI’s to enter New Zealand through private quarantine, which could include a controlled private residence, luxury accommodation or a yacht,” explains Ben Osborne, director of 37South . “We remain optimistic that this will become an option by the end of 2020, allowing sufficient time for travel prior to AC36 racing in January 2021.”
With the America’s Cup happening during New Zealand’s summer months, and with COVID-19 considerations, Lidgard expects superyacht owners and guests to arrive in New Zealand in mid-February 2021, in time to see the Prada Cup Finals finish on 21 February. The Mastercard Superyacht Regatta takes place 23 to 27 February, run by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, and then the America’s Cup begins on 6 March, 2021.
The inaugural edition of The Pacific Superyacht Forum will be taking place in June 2021 in Victoria, British Columbia, in partnership with Victoria International Marina. To find out more about the event, please click here.

By Rebecca Bradbury 14 November 2018
Currently undergoing a refit, Kingship's 35m/110ft luxury yacht RELENTLESS will return to the charter market this December and will be available in New Zealand until April before moving on to Fiji for the summer season.
Right now RELENTLESS is having a number of renovations completed at a shipyard in Queensland, Australia. Once finished, she will make her way to New Zealand to begin her winter charter season.
Boasting a free calendar over the festive period, she offers the rare opportunity to spend the holidays in the incredible country of New Zealand aboard a highly popular expedition yacht . Or, charterers could book a spring getaway on board and ensure an unforgettable start to the New Year.
Known for its sublime scenery, dynamic Maori culture and cutting-edge culinary scene, New Zealand is a bucket-list destination like no other and suits outdoor enthusiasts, beach bums and foodies alike.
Charter vacations to this far-flung country can encompass rugged black sand beaches, 140 beautiful sub-tropical islands, harbour-side cities and atmospheric, waterfall-laden fjords. There are then majestic mountains, epic forests and cosmopolitan lifestyles to explore further inland.
South Pacific archipelago Fiji , on the other hand, is all about unrushed island life. Sun-drenched beaches, turquoise lagoons brimming with fascinating marine life and swaying palm trees are all in store for those who venture to these far-flung waters for an off-the-beaten-track yacht charter next summer.
No matter where superyacht RELENTLESS cruises, those on board are guaranteed chic deck areas, modern entertainment facilities and elegant interior styling.
Sure to be the daytime hub of any yachting vacation is the multi-functional sundeck. Charterers can unwind in the spa pool, sip cocktails at the bar, bask in the sun on teak loungers and get together with loved ones in a plush seating area, all while taking in panoramic views of their cruising grounds.
Active guests will love trying out the exciting water toy collection. Easily accessed from the swim platform, the likes of high-speed jet-skis, kayaks and paddleboards offer hours of on-the-water fun. Diving equipment, game fishing gear and a beachside barbecue setup are also available.
In the evening, the entire charter party can catch up on the day’s activities on the spacious upper deck aft over a mouth-watering al fresco dinner cooked by the talented resident chef.
Opportunities for entertainment and relaxing continue into the interior. Rich wooden wall panels and a neutral colour palette create a timeless look which oozes laidback sophistication. Plus, large windows flood the surrounds with natural light and keep all in constant connection with the outdoors.
Comfortable sofas in the main salon form a sociable seating area, with a formal dining area further forward. Meanwhile, the cosy skylounge is the ideal place for family time and more laidback gatherings.
The Kingship yacht is able to sleep up to eight guests in four cabins, including a master suite, two double cabins and a twin cabin. There is a pullman berth in the skylounge too.

The biggest yachts to look out for at the 2024 St Barths Bucket
St Barths is the epicentre of superyacht racing during the Caribbean season, often with an impressive array of superyacht spectators in tow . In the final days leading up to the 2024 St Barths Bucket (21-24 March), BOAT rounds up the largest yachts seen pulling into Gustavia for the famed regatta, beginning with Lürssen's 138-metre Rising Sun ...
Builder: Lürssen Length: 138.01m
If not for her sheer size, Rising Sun will be easy to spot from the shores of Gustavia thanks to her distinct glass panels running across the two upper decks. The yacht was the last ever design of Jon Bannenberg and boasts 8,000 square metres of living space that includes a wine cellar, double-height cinema and a basketball court. Rising Sun was originally commissioned by American business magnate Larry Ellison , who later sold the yacht to media mogul David Geffen.
Builder: Kleven Length: 116.15m
One of the largest explorer yachts in the world , Multiverse (ex Ulysses ) was commissioned by New Zealand's richest man, Graeme Hart. She is equipped with a heli-hangar on the top deck for a Bell 429 helicopter, as well as a large swimming pool, cinema and spa for the ultimate guest experience. Inside, the yacht's massive 18-metre beam provides accommodation for an owner's party of up to 66.
Maltese Falcon
Builder: Perini Navi Length: 88m
Fresh out of a full-scale refit, Maltese Falcon is undoubtedly one of the most unique and technologically innovative sailing superyachts in the world – kitted out with radical unstayed masts made of "weapons-grade" carbon fibre, a FalconRig and computerised sail and mast control system. Be sure to look out for the yacht's eponymous emblem on its middle sail, which also appears in the form of a bronze sculpture next to the indoor cinema.
Builder: Admiral – The Italian Sea Group Length: 74.85m
Instantly recognisable, Kenshō' 's flowing lines and metallic green-blue hull took six years to create with design from Dutch firm Azure Yacht Design and Naval Architecture and Berlin-based archineers.berlin . The Admiral flagship was awarded the coveted Motor Yacht of the Year title at the 2023 BOAT International World Superyacht Awards and picked up another Neptune at the 2023 BOAT International Design & Innovation Awards for Best Interior Design. Onboard highlights include a glass-fronted spa pool on the sundeck, a sunbed shaped in the image of a manta ray and a diesel-electric system based on five variable-speed generators that earned the yacht its Eco classification.
Builder: Heesen Yachts Length: 65m
The multiple award-winning Illusion (ex Galactica Star ) was delivered by Heesen in 2013, featuring the Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF) developed by Dutch naval architects Van Oossanen & Associates . Her streamlined appearance and generous guest amenities have made her a favourite on the charter scene, with Beyoncé and Jay Z among her list of returning clients . Illusion was also singled out by Dickie Bannenberg – who designed the yacht's interior – as one of his most memorable projects owing to its considerable onboard art collection.
Builder: Benetti Length: 60m
Another popular charter vessel, St David will once again appear on the hit reality TV show Below Deck , but this time with a new captain at the helm. The yacht is characterised by a classic Baroque theme with intricate marquetry made from satin woods, and a mosaic floor on the skylounge that draws inspiration from a "Tuscan palazzo". While St David is known to frequent high-profile events such as the Cannes Film Festival, she has also ventured to off-the-beaten-path locations including the Seychelles, Red Sea and Abu Dhabi.
Builder: Trinity Yachts Length: 58.83m
Launched in 2016, Imagine... is one of the largest yachts to be built in the United States . The tri-deck vessel was penned by long-time collaborator Geoff Van Aller , with both the hull and superstructure built from aluminium to AB classification. The yacht's primary social area is found on the sundeck, where guests can relax in the Jacuzzi, on multiple sun loungers or at the bar. Inside, Imagine... also has a bonus cabin that doubles as a massage room.
Builder: Feadship Length: 55.5m
This Feadship superyacht has sailed under a litany of names since her 2005 delivery, including Twizzile , Drizzle , Issana , Madsummer , Cynthia and most recently, Mary A . In 2018, her owner joined forces with American interior designer Claudette Bonville Associates to give Mary A an exhaustive makeover that included a top-to-bottom paint job, technical tweaks and a brand-new interior – all while carefully preserving the yacht's pedigree.
Builder: Benetti Length: 52m
Lady B (ex Latitude ) appears to be making the most of the winter cruising season, with back-and-forth trips between the British Virgin Islands and St Barths since early December 2023 according to BOATPro 's Global Fleet Tracker. Before that, the yacht spent the off-season touring fan-favourite destinations in the South Pacific, such as Fiji, the Cook Islands and French Polynesia. She is consistently ranked among the most popular charter vessels with amenities such as an outdoor cinema, a Jacuzzi and a recently updated dive centre.
