What is yachting all about.

Super yachting is an industry where the rich and famous of the world come to play, and do business. As such, you will be required to offer top 5* service, work long hours in the department you choose (more about that in the info talk), and look good doing it!

To get into this industry you will need to get some basic courses done as a minimum, head over to Europe, and start looking for work – all of which is NOT guaranteed to result in a job!

Your reward for all the effort and money put in, is an amazing salary and experiences of a lifetime. SA Yachties is here to give you some sound advice and tell you all about the details of yachting – before you go book expensive courses, only to find out maybe its not for you!

We are offering a really great, in depth look at yachting for each department – Stewardess (waitress/cleaner/housekeeper), Chef (food slave 😉 ), Deckhand (think.. washing 100 cars a day, and you are almost there), engineer (works under the boat, isn’t so pretty, cleans the pipes (yuk!), makes sure the boat moves and gets paid a lot to do it!).

REQUIREMENTS TO GET IN

It is not easy to get onto Super Yachts and the requirements are a lot more strict and specific than to those on Cruise Ships. Here is a list of non-negotiable requirements as well as added skills that will make getting a Super Yacht Job that much easier…

Must have’s:

English First Language

Swimming ability

Money for courses, plane tickets and accommodation while looking for a job (+ – R100 000!!)

Valid Passport

Added Skills that will be beneficial (Any of these will help you in getting work on a Super Yacht):

EU Passport

Speaking another language (French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian)

Water sports (Diving, snorkeling, Jet Ski, Water skiing, Surfing, Kite Surfing, etc)

Qualified Chef

Please describe what your company does? What is your role in the staffing process?

If you want to work on a cruise ship in South Africa we are a good option.

How many vessels does your company operate?

Our fleet includes 3 motor cruises, the Sea Princess, the Condor, and the Southern Cross, 2 sailing charters, the Esperance and Spirit of Victoria, a small harbor ferry, the Dawn, and then our 2 jet boats, and Freestyle, which is our sloop rigged sail boat that we use for our Sailing Academy.

Describe a typical 'cruise' if there is such a thing. What would the shipboard experience be like for a typical employee?

Our cruises emphasize fun, and the experience on board for our employees is also fun, although they will be working hard.

What are some of the common job titles you advertise for?

We frequently require crew members to help operate the vessel, assist with rigging and mooring, and who need to be SAMSA and RYA licensed. We also need stewards and bar tenders for some cruises, as well as sales representatives and skippers from time to time.

Do you have a lot of college students working for you?

Yes, the seasonal aspect of the work is the main attraction, and the fact that they get to do fun work over their Christmas holidays.

Are there any common traits people should have in order to get hired, and then to succeed in the cruise industry?

The cruise industry is all about tourism. Most cruise companies around the world offer tours to foreigners and tourists from other areas, so you must be good with people, have a good grasp of the tourist market in your area and understand customer service.

What are the typical terms of employment offered?

For seasonal staff, you can expect shift work and to be paid by the hour. For sales reps and short based staff, hours are usually 11am to 9pm.   A lot of seasonal employers have trouble keeping staff for the whole 'season.' Do you encounter this, and do you give incentives to keep staff for the whole season?

No, our employees love their jobs!

What type of person gravitates towards these jobs?

Most applicants that come to us stay with us because we are the biggest company in the area. We normally attract people who are young and adventurous with a love of the ocean and who are free spirited. Those interested in tourism also come to us to get more experience in the marketing and sales side of things.
