Nantucket Yacht Club

The organization which was to become the Nantucket Yacht Club was first chartered in 1890 as the Nantucket Athletic Club. By the summer of 1906, a second group had come together, calling themselves the Nantucket Yacht Club, whose purpose was to provide sailing and racing for the summer residents of Nantucket, their families and friends. The leadership and membership have been able to hold a steady course – no easy matter with a seasonal operation – making changes as conditions have required and proving that yacht racing and sailing, tennis and social activity can all be kept lively and popular. The next hundred years will be exciting and are full of great promise.

Stories from Nantucket Yacht Club

The organization which was to become the Nantucket Yacht Club was first chartered in 1890 as the Nantucket Athletic Club. By the summer of 1906, a second group had come together, calling themselves the Nantucket Yacht Club headfirst into a burgeoning summer scene, when sailing enthusiasts led by H. Holton Wood assembled their boats off Brant Point and held organized races in Nantucket Sound. They met in houses built on Hulbert Avenue in 1900 by Henry Oliver Underwood, and had use of a nearby pier, complete with gazebo, owned by the neighboring Atkins Family.  Although still in its infancy, the new club acted as though it had been established for years. The first flag officers were H. Holton Wood, commodore; J.E.T. Rutter, vice commodore; Alice Underwood, secretary-treasurer; and Margaret Underwood, fleet captain. In mid-September, the yacht club held its first Commodore’s Cup Race to close the season. The new club was here to stay. Like no other institution of Nantucket, it is a place where traditions are honored, where the past is respected, and where families are celebrated – its history intertwined with that of the island it calls home.

How Much is a Yacht Club Membership? 3 Common Price Ranges

Dinner table set onboard a yacht with the text "how much is a yacht club membership?" superimposed over the image

The cost of an annual yacht club membership can vary widely depending on several factors, such as the location of the club, the amenities offered, the exclusivity of the membership, and the size of the yacht being accommodated. We’ve compiled a set of guidelines below to help you estimate what you can expect to pay for an annual yacht club membership.

Local or Less Exclusive Yacht Clubs

Afternoon party at a local yacht club

These clubs might offer basic amenities such as docking facilities, a clubhouse, and some social events. Annual fees can range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. Membership fees could be as low as $500 to $2,000 per year.

Mid-Range Yacht Clubs:

Mid-range yacht club facility

These clubs may offer more extensive amenities, including high-quality dining facilities, repair and maintenance services, fitness centers, and a busy calendar of social and boating activities. Annual fees for these clubs can range from $3,000 to $10,000 or more.

Prestigious or Exclusive Yacht Clubs

Yacht party during sunset among members of a prestigious yacht club in Miami

The most exclusive yacht clubs, often located in prime locations with extensive facilities and services, can have annual membership fees that are significantly higher. These can range from $10,000 to $30,000 or more per year, with some of the most elite clubs costing even more. Additionally, these clubs might have initiation fees that can range from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

It’s also important to note that many yacht clubs have additional costs beyond the annual membership dues. These can include initiation fees for new members, monthly minimum spending requirements at the club’s facilities, and additional fees for docking, storage, and maintenance services.

Additional Considerations

Some yacht clubs require yacht ownership as a prerequisite before being accepted into the club. Hence, while the yacht club membership itself might only be between $500 and $2,000, the true price of a yacht club membership might be tied to the cost of ownership of your yacht as well.

Bottom Line: Simply Ask If Interested

If you’re interested in joining a yacht club, make a list of yacht clubs that you might be interested in joining, and reach out to them via email or phone to get the most accurate and up-to-date information. Most yacht club members are quite friendly and are willing to help those who are interested in joining.

We wish you good luck in your yacht club search, and hope that you were able to find this article helpful.

Listing your boat with Yachtlify provides several unique benefits, including:

  • List once, post on multiple platforms (Yachtlify.com, Facebook Marketplace, Instagram, and others).
  • Schedule showings and sea trials with our calendar and reminders.
  • View listing engagement analytics across platforms.
  • eSign, state forms, and Coast Guard forms to manage closing documentation in once place.

What's Included in a Membership at the Wychmere Beach Club?

You'll have all kinds of water access when living in Harwich, Massachusetts , as Wychmere and Saquatucket harbors offer the slips, moorings, and fishing charters you'll need to get into Nantucket Sound on a regular basis. The downtown Harwich area also has plenty of beaches, so you can spend your summer days enjoying the Cape's sand and sun.

There's another option, though, for those looking for a premium beach experience that is sure to help you make the most of your summers from start to finish.

Harwich's Wychmere Beach Club is one of Cape Cod's premier private clubs, and those moving to the Cape are free to apply for membership upon arrival.

This club sits at the entrance to Wychmere Harbor and provides all the amenities you could ever desire when living on Cape Cod. Here's a look at what you can expect.

Private Beach and Pools

When arriving at the Wychmere Beach Club, the first thing you'll notice is its sandy area overlooking Nantucket Sound. This private beach enjoys a prime location on the water and features a cocktail service and on-site attendants to cater to your needs. The beach is manicured daily, too, so it's always in excellent condition.

That's not all, though, as the resort also features three heated outdoor swimming pools. First, there's an adult pool where you can relax in the sun and cool down with a quick dip. Next, you'll find a young adult pool, where users can play pool games like volleyball and basketball. Finally, there's a kiddie pool for young children four and under.

The club has a hot tub, as well, and there are private and group swimming lessons with a certified trainer available at various times throughout the summer.

Tennis Courts and Fitness Center

If you're in the mood for some activity while visiting the Wychmere Beach Club, you should know about their tennis courts. The facility has nine Har-Tru and two hardcourt surfaces, in addition to an on-site pro shop. The tennis club has competitive and recreational programs and a USPTA pro , as well.

In addition to the tennis, you can take advantage of the club's fitness center, which features all the cardio and strength training equipment you'd expect to find at a first-class gym in the city. Other wellness options include water aerobics, personal training, beach yoga, and a beach boot camp.

Children's Activities

Those with children are sure to love the Wychmere Beach Club because of the sheer volume of activities present throughout the summer. The Camp is the main program for kids, and it has seven different sessions in the summer from which to choose.

Each session is one week long and includes multiple activities like creating art projects, playing games, and learning about Cape Cod's unique beachfront landscape. Children are broken down into age-appropriate groups, ensuring all participants end up in a program that matches their current life stage.

Parents love The Camp , too, because it frees them up to lounge in the sun while their kids play all day long.

Your kids can also take advantage of the beachfront playground or participate in the many beach and lawn games that staff organize at various times. Overall, there's no better place for children on Cape Cod than the Wychmere Beach Club.

Dining Options

It wouldn't be a private club without some outstanding dining options , and, the Wychmere Beach Club has you covered.

First, there's the club's fine dining establishment, Coastal. This restaurant features the creations of chef David Blessing and offers new dinner menus every week. Most meals feature local ingredients but keep in mind you'll need reservations to attend.

Not to worry if you can't get reservations at Coastal, though, because you can still eat at the Beach Grill. This outdoor restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and features local favorites like lobster rolls, flatbread pizzas, and burgers. It's a casual eatery, but with the quality you'd expect at a luxury beach club.

Finally, there are multiple lounges and bars throughout the property, including the poolside bar and the Tiki Hut. Both facilities are open late on weekends, making them the perfect place to head for a few drinks or a quick bite.

Member's Only Events

There are member events held throughout the year at the Wychmere Beach Club, with most of them taking place in the summer. These events include dinners and parties that make use of the facility's various banquet halls.

Members can rent these halls for their own private functions, too. If you have a family member getting married or wish to celebrate your birthday or anniversary in style, booking a banquet room might be your best option. Catering and bartending are available as part of your package.

How to Apply

Applying for a membership at the Wychmere Beach Club is as simple as giving them a call or email inquiring about visiting.

You'll then show up at your appointment time for a private showing of the club. From there, you can fill out a membership application form, which will include the names of two personal references, and wait for a response.

Membership fees vary by type, but be aware that you'll have to pay an initiation fee with your application and annual dues every year. The good news is that the club is open all year-round, albeit with limited amenities in the offseason.

Living in the Harwich area comes with all kinds of benefits, not the least of which is its access to perhaps Cape Cod's most exclusive private association: The Wychmere Beach Club.

The Full Story

Nantucket Yacht Club (NYC) was one of the two original Yacht Clubs which were formed in Second Life in 2005 and a long time before the formation of the now well-known Blake Sea.  Amongst its Founder Members were Glida Pilote, Francois Jacques and Cory Copeland.  It was created in the Second Life New England (SLNE) group of just six sims, and with a New England theme.  Barb Carsen was the Estate owner and Tasha Costolany was an Estate Manager.  The New England Estate was taken over by Sudane Erato and about six months later NYC moved to a new sim, which back then was the new Bismark Sea.  RJ Kikuchiyo created the NYC Clubhouse in those early years, and the Sankaty Lighthouse which today still forms part of our Clubhouse.

One day, back in the very early 2000’s, Kanker Greenacre announced that he had designed a yacht which could sail on the water of Second Life by using scripts that he had developed, and so was born the grandfather of sailing, The Tako.  Racing as we now know it stemmed from the development of the Tako and sail-boat racing started with just a couple of Yacht Clubs, NYC being one of them.

In those “old” days we would hold our yacht races in the limited sims and around “Svars Island” in the Bismark sim; Svar Beckerstead.

In 2008 Linden Labs, together with several eminent yacht club officials of the day, worked together to create the Blake Sea. It took a lot of goodwill and planning to make the move as smooth as possible.  It felt surreal where one moment we were in one location then the next day we found ourselves in a new sim that Francois Jacques had taken on the Northern edge of the Blake Sea.  Also in 2008 The Madaket sim was offered to NYC and became part of the NYC estate, and thus was born the Nantucket Yacht Club as we know it today.  Past Officers, and members of NYC, included such names as the ever-hard working Jane Fossett , Chaos Mandelbrot well known for his cruises, the wacky Armchair Binder, also Hpathe Boucher & Quirky Toruk.  So many other names of the past that helped create NYC and fond memories.

Our then Commodore, Francois Jacques, worked tirelessly to bring sailing to ALL peoples and not just NYC Members.  As such she created Sailing Resource Centers throughout the Second Life Mainland to promote sailing.  Francois can be proud to know that many people took up sailing as a result of her efforts.  Sadly, Francois passed away in August 2012, but her legacy still lives on and we hold an annual Memorial Race in her name.  Francois’ famous motto is “Ladies & Gentlemen have you sailed today?” Gemma Vuckovic took the Commodore role after Francois' passing, and she's still the current NYC Commodore.

Following Francois’ passing, in September 2015 Nomad Zamini took over ownership of the NYC sims. However, in view of the increasing absence of Nomad from SL, the NYC Steering Committee decided that we needed a new owner for the estate.  Because of his experience of running the Sailors Cove sims we approached Patrick Leavitt to become the new owner of NYC, thankfully he agreed, and we appreciate all he has done for us.

Today NYC is proud to be one of the longest-established sailing clubs in Second Life and with a prime location and a full seven day a week calendar of races. We teach sailing and have a vast variety of yachts for sale in our shop, The Loft.  Our unique position in the history of Second Life sailing is something we are enormously proud of.  Recently, our Marina was re-designed which proved to be extremely popular, with much sought after berths rarely becoming available.  We have a new Clubhouse and surroundings.  Regular dances and parties are held in our purpose-built venue, The Park.

The Current Management Committee consists of:

Gemma Vuckovic - Commodore

Glida Pilote - Port Captain

Gin Blade - Fleet Captain

Justin Blade - Head Race Director

Heather Lane - Events Director

Fanny Vermont - Race Director

Nightingale Solo - Resident DJ
