Comparing the superyacht models leading the Princess fleet

Perhaps traditionally known for its sub-24-metre boats, British builder Princess Yachts has established itself in the luxury superyacht scene with striking yachts in its M Class series. But it was when Princess first unveiled a completely new design concept with the X Class and the X95 that the Plymouth builder truly created a stir within the 24-metre-plus segment.

The design of X95 was not just a departure from anything previously created by the British yard, it also allowed for volumes you might find on a 35-metre yacht – although it remained under the flag classification rules at 29 metres. 

Today, the X95 is joined by her sibling the Y95. Yet while the 29.1-metre yachts use the same hull structure and engineering platform, the layouts are dramatically different. The Y95, typified by a beautiful, but traditional raised-pilothouse design, has an open flybridge and hence plenty of exterior space. The X95, on the other hand, has been marketed as a "space age"-styled yacht with an enclosed flybridge and a single enclosed helm.

With that in mind, it can be hard to know which of the models is the right one for you. Will it be an open or enclosed flybridge? Will it be a master suite on the main deck or an open-plan "country kitchen"? An enclosed skylounge or more exterior space? BOAT   unpacks the defining features behind the builder's iconic superyacht range.

The X95 "Super Flybridge" and the Y95 open bridge

The key difference between the X95 Vista and Y95 is the flybridge. On the Y95, there is an open flybridge area featuring a flybridge helm and a raised pilot house. This differs from the X95 Vista, which has an enclosed flybridge and a single enclosed helm, freeing up space to allow the flybridge and main deck interior to cover almost the full length of the yacht. This creates the X Class's defining characteristic: the "Super Flybridge". This layout design provides 10 per cent more outdoor space and 40 per cent more indoor space than a traditional motor yacht, making the X95 Vista perfect for those who wish to spend extended time on board and voyage further afield.

Meanwhile, architectural innovations on the Y95 create a vast, asymmetric flybridge layout. To starboard you will find the upper helm with twin helm seats, while a forward-facing L-shaped seating area is to port. Aft of this, she offers a large deck area for free-standing furniture and a dining table that seats 10 along with a fully equipped bar with twin barbecue, hob, drawer refrigerator and a large pop-up outdoor TV.

Guests can enjoy superyacht space on the X95 Vista's main deck with a line of sight, on the standard configuration, through the forward windows and new open bow design which provides panoramic views. Accessed via an internal staircase, the upper deck is where the magic happens: the fully enclosed and climate-controlled sky lounge is the perfect place to soak up sea views while being sheltered from the elements. Outdoor dining and seating can be found on the aft section of the X95 Vista together with a second sundeck forward where a large seating area and sunpad or optional spa bath is situated.

Owners who opt for the X Class can choose between a main deck master suite or an open-plan "country kitchen". If this is the case, the full-beam master can be located on the lower deck, complemented by a forward stateroom with a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite bathroom. Further port and starboard guest cabins can also be found on the lower deck, all on a single level which helps to make the lower deck feel enormous.

On the Y95, the full-beam master suite is found on the main deck and bathes in natural light thanks to the addition of skylights. Below deck, four further beautifully appointed ensuite cabins host guests, whilst crew accommodation is situated aft of the machinery space and includes an ensuite captain’s cabin and bunk cabin. Numerous interior configurations are possible thanks to its innovative interior layout and increased volume afforded by the new hull design.

Owners also have the choice of a beach club on both models or a dedicated garage that provides storage for a Sea-Doo Spark (or equivalent), plus numerous other water toys.

Form and function

Speaking about the company's strategy, Princess Yachts' sales director, Simon Colebrooke, explains: “The X95 was designed to appeal to a whole new generation of Princess owners and to those that might want to extend their stays on board, such is the space the layout generates. The Y95 builds on the best attributes of the X Class, appealing to our heartland, with a strong focus on elegant design and modern boating life. The Y95’s design is a classic example of form and function that beautifully come together to create our largest Y Class yacht.”

The Y95 offers spacious outdoor living spaces that are comparable to larger yachts and an interior more aligned with Princess Yachts' M Class boats. Thanks to side door access on the flybridge, the yacht feels more spacious than a typical 30-metre. It also provides guests with a simple transition to the foredeck area, the perfect place for soaking up the sun's rays.

Having an enclosed skybridge on the X95 Vista affords different benefits – including the enclosed and climate-controlled sky lounge on the X95 Vista, suitable for different weather conditions. Recently redesigned to align with Princess’ latest exterior styling, the X95 Vista also features a new single-piece hull window that stretches the length of her profile.

Also enhancing her exterior design is the redesigned bow structure, which has been opened up. Guests can now enjoy panoramic views from the forward windows of the main deck or from the sanctuary of the foredeck seating area, which provides the perfect haven to sit and take in the surroundings.

Powered by twin MAN V12-2000 engines, both models can reach top speeds of up to 23 knots.

Dragon Boat Festival takes place in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - The Dragon Boat Festival wrapped up at the Pioneer Valley Riverfront Club in Springfield, where hundreds came out to show their support and have some fun in the water.

By land, by sea, by Connecticut River, this weekend’s competition already made records just hours into its return.

“The Dragon Boat Festival, it’s really at the crossroads of three wonderful opportunities. It’s competition for teams that compete as Dragon Boat teams from around the country. There’s fun for the community, it’s a chance for people to see what this is all about and there’s outdoor opportunity,” Ben Quick, executive director of the Pioneer Valley Riverfront Club told us. “We have 28 teams who showed up today to compete which is wonderful number, it’s the most we’ve had post-COVID.”

Stanley Hilton was trying to grab the top spot with the Veterans Dragon Boat USA, a club that brings our nation’s heroes together with the power of the paddle.

“You bond with everybody, and you know you’ve been through the same thing even if you never met them before, you know they have a similar story as yours,” she said. “A lot of us, we work together, and we’ve done it enough times where we can launch a boat in the water without any verbal commands.”

They may not be verbal at times, but can it take them to victory?

“We can teach you how to Dragon Boat in about 30 seconds. It takes you a lifetime to get good at it, but 30 seconds to learn it,” Quick claimed.

“There’s health benefits, obviously, you’re physically exercising, there’s mental benefits too because unlike a lot of sports you’re in a gym and there’s all that noise around you, you just go out on the water,” Hilton added.

Lil Wayne Wins Best Response to President Biden's 'I'm Sick' Tweet by Turning It Into "A Milli" Lyric

Weezy is the latest rapper to make his presence felt during the 2024 Election campaign trail.

Lil Wayne had the best response to President Joe Biden 's "I'm sick" tweet thanks to a verse from one of his hit songs, "A Milli."

On Wednesday, Biden sent out a tweet from his personal page that read, "I'm sick," shortly after news got out that he tested positive for COVID-19. The tweet served as a punchline to his following tweet that highlighted Elon Musk and his "rich buddies" allegedly buying the election for Donald Trump .

It didn't take long for Biden's post to go viral, thanks to people adding their own twists in their retweets, and they continued his statement with random phrases. Wayne caught wind of what was going on in the X world and shared a tweet that used a popular lyric from his 2008 smash hit "A Milli."

"Muthafucka, I'm ill," Weezy wrote on top of Biden's original message.

The line comes from the end of the second verse of the New Orleans native's "A Milli." In the verse, Wayne rapped, "Motherfucker, I'm ill, not sick / And I'm okay, but my watch sick, yeah, my drop sick / Yeah, my Glock sick, and my knot thick — I'm it."

There were some other hilarious retweets from people who flipped Biden's tweet. One person mentioned Ne-Yo's distaste for love songs from his 2006 track "So Sick," while another used a still shot of the 2021 AFC Divisional playoff game where the Kansas City Chiefs forced overtime and took home the win after trailing the Buffalo Bills 36 to 33 with three seconds left in the fourth quarter.

Rappers have made their presence felt during the campaign trails for the upcoming 2024 presidental election. Trump has already linked up with Sheff G and Sleepy Hallow while also inviting Azealia Banks to one of his rallies. In his interview with Speedy Morman for Complex's original series  360 With Speedy, President Biden downplayed the support Trump has been receiving from said rappers .

"Well, I'm not sure he has that allegiance, number one," Biden said. "Number two, if you look at his record in terms of African Americans and minorities, it's abysmal the way he handles everything. The answer is, I don't know if he has hip-hop artists that are supportive of him. But I know that I got started in politics because of the African American community.

Search for missing boater enters 4th day

FISH CREEK, Wis. (WBAY) - Search efforts for a missing boater continue on the Bay of Green Bay.

Law enforcement agencies are now on their fourth day of searching for 32-year-old Bill Salnik.

Crews found the bodies of two young children sailing with him. The chief deputy says the 3- and 5-year-old children were wearing lifejackets when they were found late Monday morning.

On Wednesday, the children were identified as 5-year-old Charlotte M. Salnik and 3-year-old Joshua F. Salnik. The children were found together.

Search efforts continue in an attempt to locate their father. Drone searches are being done Wednesday on the waters of Green Bay. Marine searches with K-9 assistance are planned for Thursday and there are no plans to suspend search operations at this time.

This incident remains under investigation.

“Statistically, from what I’m told, with the water temperature your survivability is up to 121 hours [about 5 days] and we’re still within that window. So, I mean, we’re not giving up hope until absolutely necessary,” Chief Deputy Patrick McCarty said.

As we’ve reported, Salnik went sailing from Oconto with his children Saturday in an 18-foot sailboat before storms hit the area.

A search of the Bay of Green Bay started Sunday afternoon after they never returned, phone calls went straight to voicemail, and their truck and trailer were found at the boat landing.

The sailboat was found south of Chambers Island. The children were found in that area five hours later.

McCarty said his team is in contact with Marinette and Oconto counties as the search of the Bay of Green Bay brings them into different areas.

McCarty added he’s grateful for the kindness some people are showing during this difficult situation.

“Our community support has been very positive. This is a difficult situation for everybody. A lot of the deputies involved in the search and recovery have young children, so it’s stressful for them as well, so we’re making sure we’re taking care of staff as well,” McCarty said.

At this time, searches will continue as long as weather and water conditions make it safe to do so.

Action 2 News will continue following these searches as crews hope to find Salnik as quickly as possible.

X-95 TM is a 30 ′ 3 ″ / 9.2 m monohull sailboat designed by Niels Jeppesen and built by X-Yachts starting in 1980.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

1 dead and 2 missing after boat capsizes off Oregon coast in ‘graveyard of the Pacific’

ASTORIA Ore. (KPTV) - A person is dead and a man and an 11-year-old boy are missing after a boat carrying five people capsized near Astoria on Saturday, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

At about 10:30 a.m., three Coast Guard boats and one helicopter responded to the area off the Columbia River Bar after call reporting a “pleasure boat” had capsized.

According to a USCG spokesperson, crews were able to rescue three of the five people and take them to a hospital.

On Sunday, the Coast Guard said one of the rescued people later died in the hospital. The condition of the other two rescued people is not known.

The final two people, a 54-year-old man and an 11-year-old boy, are still missing.

The USCG said an aircrew from Astoria and a boat crew from Cape Disappointment spent most of Saturday searching. Just after 9 p.m., they ended the search without finding either person.

Oregon State Parks reports about two thousand ships have sunk at the Columbia River Bar since record-keeping began.

Jeff Keightley has worked off the Oregon coast for 15 years running Astoria Fishing Charter and Guide Service, and estimates he’s crossed the bar thousands of times. He said that’s no easy feat.

“I think everybody knows it’s called the graveyard of the Pacific,” Keightley said. “Current rushes out and gets into that swell and it curls and breaks, and that’s a really bad place to put your boat.”

Keightley said a life jacket might mean the difference between life and death.

“Know your limits. And if you don’t know your limits you need to learn from someone who has experience crossing the bar.”
