All The Vehicles You Can Get In The Animal Crossing: New Horizons Update, Ranked

The latest — and final — update adds some wheeled flair to the game..

Animal Crossing: New Horizons , the Switch game that stole our hearts at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, sent out its final free update for the game on Nov. 4, 2021, and it includes a few things you’ve never been able to acquire before in the franchise: vehicles.

Related Content

Transportation items have been part of the Animal Crossing franchise since its start. Since the first game, your character begins their journey on a train (a 2-4-0 steam locomotive at first, which evolves to a self-propelled diesel railcar in later editions), where you strike up a conversation with a cat named Rover who allows you to pick your name and destination. The train is accessible throughout the game; you can hop on it to ride to other places.

In Animal Crossing: Wild World , instead of arriving on a train, you arrive via taxi, which will drop you off at the main plaza and never again appear. In City Folk , you’re dropped off in a bus, and you can later ride that bus to get to The City. In New Horizons , you can take a water plane to other islands to steal their resources.

But in terms of things we’d recognize as cars? They’re just not there. One character, the traveling fashionista giraffe named Gracie, initially started off as the only character with a vehicle. She’d roll into town in her convertible cabriolet, or her soft-top depending on the game, and you’d either wash her car for a prize, or she’d judge you on your fashion sense. New Leaf introduced the RV and Pocket Camp the camper.

To put it plainly, though, there has never been room for these vehicles in the game. Towns exist as isolated oases with their own self-contained economy, and the only transportation you use gets you from your town to a different area of the game or to another player’s island. Most of the time, the closest your character would get to owning a car was having a race car bed.

New Horizons has broken the mold in a lot of ways, though, so the fact that it provides vehicle options in this new update isn’t completely surprising — especially since they don’t look to be much more than décor. I haven’t personally stumbled across one in the game yet since the new update has only been available since Nov. 4, but they merely appear to be pieces of customizable furniture that you can use to decorate your home or your town. I’ve done some data mining to nab the photos, so the official names in the game could be different.

I never quite expected cars to be an option in my favorite game franchise in the world, though. And that is why I’m bringing you this blog.

13. Fair Train

The fair train, while beautiful, appears to be nothing more than a decoration or a ride at a carnival. It looks like it’s sitting on a platform that is not a rail, which means it’s a stationary train. I am aware that none of the vehicles on this list are actually maneuverable, but there’s nothing stopping me from imagining cruising around in my little expensive sedan. The fair train has a platform. It ranks last because of this.

12. Skateboard

Skateboards have existed in various forms in Animal Crossing for ages. Skateboards are fine. The ones in this game are fine. You can get either a board or a rack of skateboards that hang on the wall. But it is nothing new or exciting, and therefore it gets a low spot on the list.

11. Bicycle

A mountain bike already exists in New Horizons, but this cute bicycle has a retro look with a little metal basket on the front. It’s good, but it’s nothing revolutionary. I will craft one in pink.

10. Excavator

Now here’s where we start to dive into the good stuff. An excavator? Holy shit. I don’t exactly ever plan on using one for anything other than placing it next to an in-progress worksite for the few hours I play before the day changes over and my building is completed, so it’s not going to get a very high ranking, but it is a whole ass piece of construction equipment. I dig it.

9. Delivery Truck

Finally, I can pretend to ship my local goods out to spartan island nations in exchange for other local goods and services. A colonist’s dream. The delivery truck gets ninth.

I recently read Restoration Agriculture by Mark Shepard, which basically avers that widespread crop cultivation is killing our planet and that we should be creating perma-culture cropping systems that provide more nutrients per acre than, say, an acre of a monocrop like corn. I’m very into the idea and can’t wait to implement something similar at my own home. Tractors now make me cringe, even when they’re virtual. This tractor is cute in blue, though, so I give it an eight.

7. Steam Roller

The steam roller receives the same criticisms as the excavator, but because it is by nature a steam roller, I have the added flexibility of placing it next to things and pretending I am running them over. For that, it earns a respectable seventh place.

The Animal Crossing universe is the only space I frequently inhabit in which I am a rich and annoying benefactor to everyone around me. I live a life of gluttonous excess and both destroy and perfect my island in turns. I shower my favorite villagers in gifts and spend one million bells on that stupid-expensive crown again just because I can. This is the life I lead, and it is a perfect fit for this rich bitch yacht.

5. Shopping Cart

“But a shopping cart isn’t a form of transportation,” I hear you cry. “It’s not a vehicle!” I direct you to the documentary Carts of Darkness and ask you to expand your horizons.

4. Expensive Car

The expensive car is some Mercedes-ass looking shit. It’s fancy. It looks like something a terrible and rich old hag would drive. It looks like something my husband would drive. I hate it. It’s great. I want to build one in gold.

3. Covered Wagon

Never content to merely represent the modern age, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has provided us with a beautiful covered wagon for those among us who like to keep our islands machine-free. Try not to think too hard about the implications of placing a covered wagon on an island that features horse villagers.

Image for article titled All The Vehicles You Can Get In The Animal Crossing: New Horizons Update, Ranked

This little scooter is honestly the only form of transportation that I’d actually want to cruise around in because it is cute and harmless in the same way that all of Animal Crossing is cute and harmless. I would drive it on the beach and up a mountain and from Tom Nook’s nephews’ store to Hornsby’s house to deliver a gift. It’s great. I love it.

1. Compact Car

The compact car in Animal Crossing: New Horizons was the first vehicle I saw on the list of new items, and it made me gasp out loud because of how much I loved it. It comes with tons of different customizable options, and I truly cannot wait to put together my gorgeous pink compact machine to park outside of my gorgeous pink Animal Crossing home.

Kapp'n Boat Tours

Welcome to IGN's Animal Crossing: New Horizon's 2.0 Update guide! This section will tell you everything you need to know about the new Kapp'n Boat Tours, including where to find him, how to go on a boat tour and what kinds of islands you can travel to!

Who Is Kapp'n and What Are Boat Tours?

Kapp'n, a charming green turtle who loves to sing sea shanties, is a new addition found in the Animal Crossing: New Horizon's 2.0 update.

Kappn Boat Tour 1.jpg

Much like the Dodo Airlines Mystery Island Tours , you can hop aboard Kapp'n's boat and have him take you to a random mystery island where you can find fruits , vegetable crops , flowers , fish and special items like star fragments ! Mystery Tours are a great way to farm for items that you might not be able to find on your own island or that of your friends, and an even better way to recruit new villagers for your island.

You can find Kapp'n lounging on his boat by your island's pier. For a fee of 1,000 Nook Miles , he'll take you aboard his ship and serenade you as you both sail into the sea. Just be sure to make the most of your trip as Kapp'n Boat Tours are limited to one trip per day.

Boat Tour Mystery Islands

Much like the mystery islands that are accessed via Dodo Airlines, the Boat Tour mystery islands can each offer different types of fruits, flowers, fish, bugs that may not be native to your own island, making these trips a great opportunity to farm as many items as you can carry back home. You can even travel to mystery islands that are experiencing completely different weather than that of your home island - imagine being able to catch snowflakes in July!

As part of the 2.0 update, Boat Tour Islands offer a variety of crafting materials like vegetables , bamboo, and even season specific materials like cherry blossom petals and snowflakes on certain islands.

Gyroid Fragments

More importantly, when visting an island through Kapp'n's Boat Tour, you'll be able to find and dig up a Gyroid fragment. Each island includes only one Gyroid fragment so you'll need to make multiple trips if you're trying to grow your collection.

Be sure to check out our extensive Gyroid List and Guide for everything you need to know from how to find them to how to use them in your home!

List of Islands

Below you'll find a list of the different items and types of islands you can discover by braving the ocean with Kapp'n. Be sure to come back and check this page often as we continue to discover more about these new islands and update the list!

Vine & Glowing Moss Island

On this island, you'll be able to find coconunt trees, vines, glowing moss and two types of plumeria bushes: white and pink. While you can find coconut trees on other mystery islands , vines and glowing moss can currently only be found through Kapp'n's Boat Tour or by visiting the Happy Home Paradise resort .

The pink and white plumeria bushes, however, are exclusive to the boat tour mystery islands so be sure to pack a few for the ride home!

Kappn Boat Tour Vine Island.jpg

Vegetable Crop Island

If you find yourself eager to begin growing vegetable crops but haven't had Lief stop by your island with starters or have a pal who can gift you some crops, you can hop on board Kapp'n's boat and hopefully arrive on one of these islands. Vegetable crop islands can feature any of the following crops:

  • Pumpkins - orange, white, yellow and green

Be sure to check out our vegetable guide to find out more information on these new items!

Vegetable Island.jpg

Star Fragment Island

You'll find yourself transported to a nighttime island in the middle of a meteor shower. While walking the across the beach, you can find star fragments scattered across the shore and even a message bottle containing a DIY Recipe. Be sure to bring a shovel and pummel the rocks on the island to find even more star fragments!

Our Shooting Star Wishes, Star Pieces and Star Fragments guide is a great place to learn more about these special materials!

Star Island 1.jpg

Cherry Blossom Island

Taking a trip on board Kapp'n's boat can also mean landing on a special seasonal island like the Cherry Blossom Island. Cherry Blossoms normally only bloom in the Nothern Hemisphere from April 1-10 and in the Southern Hemisphere from October 1-10.

But no matter what season your island is in, you can find yourself arriving on mystery island that is currently experiencing cherry blossom season. Landing on this island means you'll be able to find materials like cherry blossom petals needed to craft specific cherry blossom themed DIY recipes .

Seasonal Island.jpg

Snow Island

Even if your island is in the middle of summer, you can find yourself sailing up to the shore of an island covered in snow. Like the Cherry Blossoms Island, arriving at the Snow Island means you'll be able to collect winter specific materials like snowflakes to be able to craft some DIY recipes .

Snow Island.jpg

Bamboo Island

Just like the bamboo island found through Dodo Airlines, this island will feature fully grown bamboo and plenty of bamboo shoots you can dig up and bring home to create your own bamboo forest right in your backyard.

Bamboo Island.jpg

Money Island

If you're lucky enough to land on this island, you'll find Money Trees containing multiple bags of 1,000 bells on each one.

How Kapp'n boat tours in Animal Crossing: New Horizons work and what are the perks

What to expect from these new random islands on Kapp'n boat tours

Kapp'n on his boat in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Kapp'n boat tours are here, and the lazy little turtle himself is ready to take you on some boat tours that can earn you some seriously good stuff. It's worth noting that you can only go on one Kapp'n boat tour a day, so make it count. Clear your pockets of anything unessential and make sure you've got plenty of time to make the most of what's on offer.

Here's everything you need to know about Animal Crossing: New Horizons Kapp'n boat tours, which have arrived as part of Animal Crossing: New Horizons Update 2.0 :

How Kapp'n boat tours work and the cost

Kapp'n on his boat in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Each Kapp'n boat tour costs 1000 Nook Miles, but it comes with the caveat of only being able to take one per day.

Kapp'n can be found on his boat at the pier on your island and will take you to remote islands that are similar to those you'll visit using Dodo Airlines. However, they're a little more exciting than those, which is why Kapp'n is rationing out visits.

Once you've paid your toll though, you'll zip off on Kapp'n speedboat to a random island, and all the way he'll sing you one of his famous sea shanties. If you press A, you can clap along with them too.

Kapp'n on his boat in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Clap away by all means, but also pay attention to the weather conditions of your boat trip as it may well hint at the island you're about to visit.

If you've flown via Dodo Airlines to any islands, there are some similarities here. If you need tools, for example, Kapp'n can sell you flimsy ones for Nook Miles, and there's always a workbench on every island for emergency crafting.

What makes Kapp'n boat tour islands special?

The magic thing about Animal Crossing: New Horizons Kapp'n boat tours is that the islands you'll visit may exist in a different time of day or season to your own island. That means the possibility of collecting any of the Animal Crossing: New Horizons fish , Animal Crossing: New Horizons bugs , or Animal Crossing: New Horizons sea creatures that you may have missed. They may also feature other unusual items, like flowers not native to your own island, different bushes that you can dig up and take home, and even brand new items like climbable vines. Here are some of the things you may find via a Kapp'n boat trip:

  • Money trees - Reap the financial benefits of multiple money trees each carrying 3000 bells each
  • Seasonal recipes - Message in a bottle recipes can be related to the season that island exists in, such as Cherry Blossom recipes or Mushroom recipes.
  • New 'Glowing Moss' recipes - Recipes linked to the new glowing moss flora that you can find on Kapp'n trips
  • Food recipes
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons Gyroids and Gyroid fragments
  • Star fragments - Can be found inside rocks

How to go on boat tours - Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Take a boat tour with Kapp'n in Animal Crossing: New Horizons so you can find some new resources.

Sam Chandler

Animal Crossing: New Horizons now lets players go on boat tours. These tours, captained by a new critter called Kapp’n, are similar to the Dodo Airline experience. They allow you to visit new islands where you can find resources, bugs, fish, and even ingredients and other valuable items. For players that are wondering how to go on a boat tour, we’ve got you covered.

Go on a boat tour

Going on a boat tour in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a relaxing and useful experience. Before you can set off with Kapp’n for a faraway island, you must first ensure Animal Crossing: New Horizons is updated to at least Version 2.0.0. Once your console is up to date, you should log in and enter your island.

find kappn boat tour animal crossing new horizons

You can find Kapp’n in his little boat by your pier. Note that this is not the dock you use to get to Dodo Airlines – your pier will be on your island somewhere else. If you’re having trouble locating it, press ZL to open your NookPhone and then open your map app. Look for the tiny brown line – that’s your pier.

Go down to your pier and then speak with Kapp’n who should be sitting in his boat. It costs 1,000 Nook Miles to travel to a random, uncharted island, so make sure you’re continually getting more Nook Miles so you can visit as many as you want.

The bout tours that Kapp’n can take you on are a great way to discover new ingredients, which are needed in cooking and making meals . The boat tour is also how you will find Brewster so you can unlock the Roost .

Going on boat tours in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a great way to gather more resources. It might be a bit more expensive than a Dodo Airlines flight, but it’s a quicker process (plus, you get to hear Kapp’n sing). Stop by our Animal Crossing: New Horizons Guide for a wealth of helpful information.

The New Animal Crossing Game Rumors Explained

  • Rumors suggest a 2026 debut for the next Animal Crossing with exciting new features like a city, vehicles, and intricate multiplayer options.
  • The possibility of a giant shopping mall and a revamped multiplayer experience could potentially revolutionize the beloved game series, but these rumors should be taken lightly until an official confirmation is shared.

Nearly four years after the last Animal Crossing game, the community is eagerly awaiting news of a new installment. Though Nintendo has yet to confirm if another title is in development, after the runaway success of New Horizons, it seems likely. After all, the silence from Nintendo could be a strategic move towards building anticipation for a future announcement.

Interestingly, given the franchise's usual release schedule for mainline titles, it appears that such an announcement could be right around the corner. Typically, Nintendo introduces a fresh Animal Crossing game every three to four years. Notably, New Leaf and New Horizons were a staggering eight years apart with only apps and spin-offs such as Pocket Camp and Happy Home Designer released between.

The Next Animal Crossing Game Could Benefit From Untethering Milestones From Nook Miles

A new animal crossing could debut in 2026, the next animal crossing could be slated for a next-gen debut.

On March 13, 2024, rumors surfaced online claiming a new Animal Crossing game is developing . The source, Twitter user "NWeedle," is suggesting a 2026 release, which would mean the game is targeted to come out six years after New Horizons . Of course, Nintendo could be purposefully delaying the game into 2026 to release it on its rumored next-gen console, nicknamed the "Switch 2." According to the claims, the next game will feature the following:

  • A city complete with skyscrapers
  • Drivable vehicles
  • Adventure missions (including puzzles and mini-games)
  • More intensive multiplayer support

While mini-games aren't a new concept in the Animal Crossing universe, the more intensive puzzles introduced in New Leaf were enjoyable. As a result, similarly challenging mini-games in a future installment would be exciting. NWeedle has hinted that this will include cake throwing, vehicle races, birthday celebrations, and a game called "Mouse Hunt."

The Next Animal Crossing Could Have a Giant Shopping Mall

Theories surrounding the next Animal Crossing game are only continuing to grow, with whispers suggesting a brand-new monetary system. This could involve the introduction of a massive shopping center, potentially reminiscent of the bustling Main Street in New Leaf or The City found in both New Leaf and City Folk . Speculation points towards players owning and operating their own shops within the shopping center, similar to Nook's Cranny, which is managed by Timmy and Tommy in New Horizons.

A more robust multiplayer experience in Animal Crossing has always been a thrilling premise. The rumored shopping center, if implemented, could revolutionize how players interact with each other via vibrant shopping sprees while visiting friends' towns and fostering deeper connections. The Twitter rumors have even hinted at the possibility of purchasing vehicles within the center, which, if true, could significantly alter how players travel around their city.

Unfortunately, while the source credited for these theories has a decent following on Twitter, they lack a track record of reliable leaks. Additionally, the source's post being in Spanish raises the possibility of mistranslation, which can lead to incorrect details being shared. However, given that New Horizons was announced two years before its launch, there's a possibility that Nintendo will unveil news about a new game in the near future.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the fifth major game in the Animal Crossing series. This slice-of-life simulation game tasks the player with developing an abandoned island into a small town for its resident villagers. The game was released at the start of worldwide lockdowns amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which catapulted it into massive success. It's currently the best selling game of all time in Japan.

After it came out in 2016, Stardew Valley set a new standard for the farming sim genre. It’s a game that can be as chill or as intense as each player wants, and the charming pixel art and iconic soundtrack really cement it as a quintessential “cozy game.”

But if you’re a little Stardew Valley -ed out after running through patch 1.6 , or simply looking for something with similar vibes but different gameplay, then we’ve got you covered. From relaxing games about the afterlife to Disney crossovers, here are 12 games with big Stardew Valley energy.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

A group of eight residents gathered around a picnic table in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Where to play: Nintendo Switch

What it is: The quintessential cozy game, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is right up there with Stardew Valley in terms of chill games where management and friendship are huge mechanics. Build up an island and invite adorable villagers to live there with you!

Why it’s like Stardew Valley : This is an obvious entry, but it bears repeating on the off chance a Stardew Valley fan in your life hasn’t yet tried New Horizons . Like Stardew Valley , New Horizons can be super chill and based on vibes — or you can really try to maximize everything and make a million bells, invest in the stalk market, and turn your bare-bones island into an intricate themed wonderland. It’s up to you! — Petrana Radulovic

Bear and Breakfast

In the game Bear and Breakfast, a beaver named Tony wearing a construction uniform says to the bear “Don’t mind me, just living the wood life.”

Where to play it: Nintendo Switch, Windows PC

What it is: Just what it says on the tin. You’re a bear named Hank, and you run a bed and breakfast with your forest friends. Renovate old buildings and deck them out with kitschy furnishings to attract guests, while decorating their rooms and cooking their favorite dishes to divorce them from as much cash as possible. Eventually you’ll expand your empire to include bigger lodgings and bring employees onto your crew to handle some of the day-to-day drudgery. Bottom line, Bear and Breakfast is a game with a charming art style and witty dialogue paired with a satisfying gameplay loop.

Why it’s like Stardew Valley : If you enjoy the satisfaction that comes from making something of worth from nothing, Bear and Breakfast has that in spades, allowing you to build your cozy empire from the ground up. Bear and Breakfast doesn’t gamify its relationships with other characters in the same way as Stardew Valley (you are a bear, after all), but your interactions with its diverse cast of characters are still a big part of the overall experience. — Alice Jovanée

Cozy items on Cozy Grove’s island

Where to play: Apple Arcade, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, Xbox One

What it is: An idle, ultra-casual life sim where you, a Spirit Scout, have to complete errands for an island full of ghosts to literally bring color back to this muted world and learn about their pasts. Unlike other games of its kind, you can complete your daily tasks in 20 to 30 minutes each day, and you’re encouraged to log off after.

Why it’s like Stardew Valley : It features some obvious similarities, like farming and quest-taking, but Cozy Grove is, most importantly, about connecting with the NPCs and improving their lives with small gestures. — Carli Velocci

Why it’s like Stardew Valley: Take the basic framework of Stardew Valley — fixing up a farm and helping a struggling community — but add a whole museum to renovate, a mermaid kingdom, and a theme of environmental restoration. Also, there’s a whole host of hot singles to date! And boy, they are — PR

Disney Dreamlight Valley

A Disney Dreamlight Valley avatar, wearing a red shirt and a skirt with a Monsters Inc. backpack, tells Scrooge McDuck she’s never heard of him.

Where to play: Mac, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X

What it is: Disney’s life simulation game combines iconic characters like Ariel, Mickey, and Scar with rebuilding a small town. Additionally, there’s a fun overarching plotline to get more characters back, which involves your player character reconciling with their inner child. Ah, that Disney magic!

Why it’s like Stardew Valley : There’s farming, fishing, and mining — all with your favorite Disney characters. Unfortunately, you can’t marry them, but you can build up friendships and have them help you with your little tasks! This is especially fun with the villain characters, who will still be sassy and rude, but with a soft spot for you. — PR

Dredge and Strange Horticulture

A fishing boat heads toward a lighthouse while the sun rises over the horizon in a screenshot from Dredge

Where to play: Dredge is available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X; Strange Horticulture is available on Mac, Nintendo Switch, Windows PC, and Xbox One

What they are: Dredge is a horror fishing management game, and Strange Horticulture is a horror puzzle game centered around plants. They’re the perfect spooky double feature, with satisfying gameplay and eerie atmospheres.

Why they’re like Stardew Valley : At first glance, these two games don’t really evoke Stardew Valley … but there’s always been some creepier magic tones to Stardew , from the Skull Cavern to the sewer. Dredge and Strange Horticulture have the management aspects of Stardew , though each focuses on one particular element. Both slowly build up the scariness, lulling you in with satisfying simulation play as the horror and unease steadily build. It’s Stardew Valley , if you ever wanted your favorite cozy games to have a tinge of the macabre. — PR

Graveyard Keeper

A skull says “Nicely done!” in a graveyard in Graveyard Keeper

Where to play it: Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One

What it is: Manage the dead, exploit the living. Graveyard Keeper is a macabre twist on the usual plant-farm-craft-repeat mechanics from similar farming games. Clean up and decorate plots in your cemetery with different headstones, urns, and mausoleums by gathering resources in the wild. Remember, if things get too tough to handle on your own, you can always reanimate your would-be tenants into unwitting drones to assist with production and upkeep.

Why it’s like Stardew Valley : Graveyard Keeper hits the same satisfying notes of developing your own homestead and optimizing processes to help you turn a tidy profit. You’re just harvesting organs instead of crops. Graveyard Keeper even has a robust modding community that has developed an extensive suite of quality-of-life improvements. — AJ

The town square of Kilima Village, which has a cracked gold and orb mounted on marble central feature with flowers planted into the ruins. Villagers and players go about their business.

Where to play: Nintendo Switch, Windows PC

What it is: Palia is a free-to-play game set in the middle of a idyllic valley, where humanity has emerged after a long magical isolation into a vibrant valley of elves and golems.

Why it’s like Stardew Valley : Players meet neighbors who help them learn the skills of hunting, fishing, bug catching, furniture building, gardening, and cooking. A low-stakes story unfolds over new patches released by Singularity Six. — Cass Marshall

Potion Craft: Alchemist Simulator

A sepia-toned image with a lot of potion vials leading into each other in Potion Craft: Alchemist Simulator. It looks delightfully intricate and complicated

Where to play it: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X

What it is: Grow herbs, craft potions, and manage customers in a medieval, magical world. Most of the game takes place inside your shop, where you navigate and explore a map to unlock even more potions. You can make money by selling what NPCs ask for or you can choose not to provide service for a potentially evil customer — the choice is yours.

Why it’s like Stardew Valley : While other shop management games build up stress by throwing tons of customers at you, Potion Craft allows you to take your time. You can go about your day however you want, so it has a lot of the same chill vibes you’ll get in Stardew . — CV

The Sims 4: Cottage Living

A young girl hugs a llama on a farm

Where to play: Mac, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, Xbox One

What it is: The Sims 4 has many (arguably too many) expansion packs, but this one adds a quaint countryside town so that your Sims can live their best cottagecore life.

Why it’s like Stardew Valley : The base Sims 4 game already has gardening, fishing, and mining (without the combat), but Cottage Living takes it up a notch by introducing farm animals to take care of and a whole community errand aspect. Nothing says Stardew like a bulletin board of chores to perform for your neighbors! — PR

Spiritfarer

animated characters on a boat look at the sun setting in the distance in Spiritfarer

Where to play: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X; it’s also included in Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus Extra.

What it is: A life management sim where you play as a spiritfarer named Stella, whose new job is to shuttle spirits on a boat through the afterlife and all the magic it entails. You’ll have to help them fulfill their final wishes by completing tasks, feeding them delicious food, and upgrading their boat abodes for maximum comfort.

Why it’s like Stardew Valley : Put simply, Spiritfarer is like Stardew Valley but on a boat. You’ll have to tend to crops, build structures, cook, and do tasks for others to make them happy. Instead of maybe marrying an NPC, though, you’ll help them move on — and shed some tears in the process. — CV
