WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

Unlike the Level 1 and 2 qualifications, the Intermediate Powerboat course requires previous powerboat experience. You may have completed the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course, or you may have an equivalent level of experience.

Many of our students also find that some of the theory courses help them to better understand some of the more technical elements of the course. If you have completed the RYA VHF, RYA First Aid or RYA Day Skipper theory course, you will find that you are able to put into practice some of the information that you have learned on the Intermediate Powerboat course.

Due to the more technical nature of this course compared to others, we have set a minimum age for students on the Intermediate Powerboat course of 16 years old.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

The RYA Intermediate Powerboat course will give you the opportunity to plan a cruise by daytime. You will have the opportunity to participate in two cruises – one by traditional methods of navigation and the other by GPS.

During this course you will have the opportunity to develop your existing safety and boat handling to the standard required for longer passages in more complex scenarios.

The RYA Powerboat scheme that we specialise in teaching has a series of logical steps or building blocks to it. However, when you start looking at the powerboat training courses that are available it can sometimes be unclear what you need to do. Here we will explain to you the benefits of doing each course so you can decide how far you want to take your training. You can click on any of the icons on this page and get the specific details of each course we offer.

Level 2 powerboat training courses

RYA Powerboat Level 2

The RYA powerboat training courses start with the Powerboat Level 2 course. There is a Level 1 course but this is really designed for children. It doesn’t get you a licence and just increases your costs. We don’t offer it.

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 is a two day course. Upon successful completion of this course you will be issued a UK licence to drive powerboats up to 10 metres in length. That’s a pretty big boat after just two days on the water!

During the course we will cover all the basics of seamanship and basic boat handling. We will teach you how to manoeuvre in the wind and tide and show you how to do various tasks. These will include anchoring, picking up a mooring buy for a lunch stop, recovering a person from the water and safe high speed driving and cornering. We also include a free VHF course. Not a bad bundle for £325 ?

The Powerboat licence can, if you wish, be converted into an ICC. That’s an International Certificate of Competence. This licence will allow you to drive powerboats while on holiday in the sun. Living the dream! In order to do this you simply need to send a form and a passport photo off to the RYA and for the princely sum of £45 they will issue your international licence. Alternatively, if you join the RYA for 1 year, they will issue the licence for free. Bargain!

Bear in mind though, most reputable places abroad will require you to have a VHF radio licence in order to legally charter a boat while you’re on holiday. That’s why we include it for free?️

Level 2 powerboat training courses

RYA Essential Navigation

An extremely sensible add on to the Powerboat Level 2 course is the Essential Navigation classroom course. At £125 it’s not an expensive course but it does mean another weekend training. The benefit of this is the safety knowledge it gives you to take on the water when you go boating.

A bit like the highway code for boats it will teach you how to interpret the maps, to avoid getting caught out by the tide and how to avoid hazards and plan a safe day on the water.

Most students tend to stop at this point to be honest. They have a ICC and a VHF radio licence so they can hire a boat on holiday. They also have just enough knowledge to be sensible and stay safe on the water. So at this point we have done enough high quality training for them to have the confidence they need as well as the skills.

RYA Intermediate Powerboat Training Courses

The intermediate powerboat training course is the next step in the journey. Again, it’s a two day course and people come back to it at different times. It’s an excellent course to do as we go off visiting new places. You will make a plan to enter a different harbour and then follow the plan on the water.

The intermediate powerboat training course teaches you to go further afield on even bigger adventures. That’s why people come back to it at different times. It depends how much boating you do after your Powerboat Level 2 course but eventually you will want to visit more places. It’s part of getting the best out of your new hobby. ?

Rather than focusing on boat handling, although this is still included, we will teach you to plan a coastal passage. From our base in Poole Harbour, this could mean navigating to a secluded cove on the Jurassic Coast. Visiting Christchurch for lunch at the Captain’s Club. Or a gentle river trip to a country village.

Day Skipper Theory

The Day Skipper theory course is a thorough navigation course that will give you the knowledge to plan coastal passages and keep everybody safe too.

This course has a minimum of 40 hours classroom time. During the course we will teach you:

  • Position fixing and GPS navigation
  • Rules of the road
  • Weather forecasting
  • How to get into new harbours
  • Tidal calculations
  • Emergency and safety procedures

Day Skipper IRPCS Revision Sheet

Take Things Pro With These Powerboat Training Courses

After the intermediate course there are a range of courses and exams required so that you can go pro. Lets explore these options in more detail.

RYA Powerboat Instructor Course

Yachtmaster Theory and the Advanced Powerboat Course

The Advanced powerboat course is required training in order to take the commercial skipper exam. During the course we will take you out in the dead of night and teach you to navigate by the lights. You will be trained to the point that you can stop the boat in the middle of the ocean within 5 metres of an unmarked position. It’s pretty cool stuff.

In order to gain the knowledge and be capable to pass the course you will have to have recorded between 400 and 800 miles of experience on the water. You will also need to pass the Yachtmaster theory course to give you the knowledge needed at a professional level.

This is also a two day course but you can expect a very late night. We will teach you how to conduct search patterns, give safety briefs and give you the tools to take paying passengers to sea.

The Advanced Powerboat Exam

The advanced exam is conducted by an independent examiner from the RYA. He will expect you to have a thorough knowledge of everything in the syllabus and be a capable boat handler.

Successful completion of this exam will qualify you to drive power driven vessels, up to 24 metres in length, as a commercial skipper. ?️

Become an RYA Powerboat Level 2 Instructor

This is probably one of the most awesome ways to earn extra pennies there is. It’s also not that hard to achieve which is the good news.

In order to be eligible to become an instructor you need to hold a Level 2 certificate and have three seasons experience of driving powerboats. Having said that, if you drive boats as part of your job, this is cut down to one season.

If you meet that criteria you can attend a skills assessment day with an independent powerboat trainer. If you make the grade then you can attend the week long instructor course. During the course you will learn how t structure and deliver an RYA powerboat level 2 course. On a successful pass you can then teach the course. We pay £100 per day for powerboat instructors. Not bad over a two day course program. ?

Intermediate and Advanced Powerboat Instructor

To be able to teach at the top level of the powerboat scheme you have to have been a powerboat level 2 instructor for at least a year. You also have to hold the advanced course certificate and the COC exam qualification.

If you do then it’s the same again. Attend an instructor course conducted by an RYA trainer. If your successful you can then teach people to go further afield and take them on adventures in the dark.

However far you decide to take your hobby or professional qualifications, we have the right powerboat training courses and the right attitude to your learning. We will work with you and get you where you want to be. Wherever that may be. ?????

Why choose Powerboat Training UK for your Intermediate Powerboat course?

Our location and teaching facilities ~ Poole Harbour is a truly amazing teaching location – so much so that the RNLI and the Royal Marines base their training operations here. Our classrooms are well resourced, professional, clean and tidy.

Likewise our base in Lymington at Aquasafe Powerboat School is at Lymington Yacht Haven which like Cobbs Quay is a large marina with a huge range of craft. Our classrooms are well resourced, clean and professional.

Our Instructors ~ We ensure that our instructors are teaching 100% ‘Best Practice’ and have a process whereby we constantly review their sessions to ensure that you get the most productive experience from your time with us. All teach because they love boating and we work with them to constantly ‘upskill’ their qualifications and experience.

Our history ~ We started the school over ten years ago and have grown a reputation for delivering on our promises. Our clients range from individuals with their own craft to organisations such as Sunseeker, the RNLI and we were awarded the RYA Training contract by Dorset Police for the London 2012 Olympic events in Weymouth.

We are also very proud to have written the RYA Powerboat Handbook for the RYA and alsothe RYA Advanced Powerboat Handbook too.

What is included in the course price? ~ When you undertake your Intermediate Course on your boat then the price you pay includes all RYA course materials, free use of waterproofs and other safety gear that you may need and it also includes VAT too – a common extra.

Does the course price represent good value? ~ Remember in life you pretty much get what you pay for. We don’t pretend to be the cheapest but the course will be run by instructors guaranteed to teach current best practice with real hands on experience of your type of boat. We have great facilities in large marinas offering a great all-round experience. Check out the other relevant pages on this website to see what we mean.

Some of the offers available when buying this course include…..

Special Offer No1!! Book and pay for your VHF Course at the same time as you book the Intermediate course and only pay £75 for the VHF course (including course pack). (Usual cost is £100, you also need to pay the RYA Fee which is £60). You can choose whether to undertake the course in the classroom or online. We run VHF Courses every two weeks so fitting you in will never be an issue – we run these courses  in Poole and Lymington.

Special Offer No2!! We also offer the opportunity to book the classroom based and online versions of the RYA Dayskipper Theory Course for significant discounts when booked alongside an Intermediate Powerboat course. The Dayskipper course is a great way to really develop on from the Intermediate course and the fact that you would undertake 5 days of theory rather than the one you get the time for on the Intermediate course explains the difference in depth this can be taught to. You will get a discounted rate of £280 for the online course and £330 for the classroom based course – great deals!

Intermediate Powerboat – on your boat - The Course

Reflecting a demand for a course to follow naturally on from Level 2 the RYA launched the Intermediate Powerboat course. This course is taught by Advanced Centres and is a great course for those with their own boat keen to go further afield. The course lasts 2 days and is a very popular course and naturally builds on the basic building blocks of skill created and developed in the Level 2 course.

Your instructor will cover the following topics with you during your time with him/her:

Theory subjects such as:

  • Bearing distance
  • Charts, symbols & use of charts
  • Use of almanacs
  • Use of marina locks
  • Latitude & longitude
  • Principals of GPS
  • Sources of forecast information & interpretation of them
  • Use of plotting instruments
  • Waypoint navigation
  • Emergency situations

Practical subjects including:

  • Boat preparation including kit
  • Crew preparation
  • Boat handling including effect of waves
  • Rougher conditions
  • Awareness of wind & tide
  • Passage making including application of subjects covered in theory section
  • Man overboard recovery techniques

Broadly speaking the course divides into i) developing the core navigation skills to be able to undertake coastal passages ii) Using these skills afloat to undertake a passage/entry to a port safely.

Day one will tend to start with a bit of a recap on the theory side to see where you are relative to the level that we need to achieve during the course. You then go afloat and spend some time practicing and enhancing your close quarter boat handling skills. Once back in the classroom the instructor will look in detail at the areas of passage planning and pilotage so that you have the skills to put it into practice.

Day two will spend lots of time learning new skills such as the ways to use GPS to create effective and rapid position fixes in small open craft. You’ll use the skills developed on day one to plan and execute pilotage plans setting you up well to be able to use these skills where ever you choose to go boating.

When we are training on your boat we can choose a passage to undertake with you. For example if you are in Poole then a passage to Yarmouth is a great trip but whatever passage you choose we will put the skills into practice we’ve covered during the course.

Our Instructors that will deliver the course are all highly experienced Advanced Powerboat Instructors holding current Commercially Endorsed Advanced Powerboat Certificates. These instructors know the areas where we run these courses very well but critically have real first hand experience of making passages so understand the practicalities and limitations of doing so.

Intermediate Powerboat – on your boat - This course is aimed at

Intermediate powerboat

Whereas Level 2 focuses on introducing boaters to short trips close to shore the Intermediate Course aims to take them further afield. The course perfectly suits:

  • Those who are quite new to boating and wish to build on the skills and knowledge gained in their Level 2 course. As a guide typically a 12 month gap is perfect however if after getting your Level 2 course you have got plenty of hours under your belt less than 12 months can be fine. Call to discuss if you are unsure.
  • The course is also perfect for those who have boated for years but want to expand their horizons. The Intermediate Course can ‘bolt on’ perfectly to many years of experience opening up new horizons and improving confidence and the enjoyment of exploring new places.
  • For those with their own boat the intermediate course is a fantastic way to gain experience travelling further away from your home base. Having an instructor on board when you undertake a coastal passage is both a great reassurance but of course a great way to make sure that you are doing it right.

Intermediate Powerboat – on your boat - Syllabus

Aim:  To teach powerboating up to the standard required to complete a short coastal passage by day.

Assumed knowledge:  Candidates should be competent to the standard of the National Powerboat Certificate (Level 2) with Coastal Endorsement.

Intermediate Powerboat – on your boat - Reviews

“Just wanted to drop you a line to thank you all hugely for the Intermediate course. When I got home Jo asked me what the best bit was and I really struggled to put into words all the great things we did. I really enjoyed the theory side and felt that I consolidated and built on what I had learned on Level 2, the passage to Yarmouth was awesome – being able to see the Needles up close was great – but I suppose it was the Instructors patience and knowledge that made it for me. Nye and Paul were always relaxed but totally in control but have such a huge amount of knowledge which they share in a really relaxed way. As Arnie said – I’ll be back!!. PS: Thanks to Viv – very smooth booking process” Johnnie
“Just to say thanks for a fantastic Intermediate Course at the weekend, good to refresh on some handling skills and also cover some of the stuff from the Dayskipper theory on top of the new stuff. However, the sojourn into the bay in a very lumpy sea was by far the best bit, had a great time and really enjoyed the experience. Congratulations on having Nye on your team – you seem to specialise in using really friendly people who know what they are doing and know how to put it across. I don’t think you could have found a better person to put me at ease, and the two other chaps on the course were good company too.” Steve
“Thanks for the weekend, we had a great time. Our aim was to be able to go to the solent safely and head out on the berth holders cruises and we feel we can do so. Thanks to Martin for his help.” David and Michelle on their Fairline 29
“Great course, great boats and great instruction – thanks” James
“Not a good result on Wednesday. Tom now wants a big RIB and says nothing less than Harrier will do!!!!!! Joking aside a really beneficial course and I feel far more confident now” Richard with his 16 year old son Tom
“And you call instructing a job?” Nikki

This course is the next level to Powerboat Level 2, and looks to increase your knowledge & give confidence to go further for longer. The course teaches over two days how to navigate by both electronic and traditional methods, plus a bit more in-depth chart work in order to put a passage plan together.

The Powerboat Intermediate course is designed to teach boat handling and seamanship skills. The course takes two days to complete and is open to experienced boaters and complete novices alike.

RYA Powerboat Advanced Professional Qualifications

RYA powerboat courses are primarily for those using small powered craft such as RIBs, dories and sportsboats that don't generally undertake long or offshore passages.

The types of commercial craft requiring this level of certification are typically: charter fishing boats, small passenger launches, thrill ride operators, harbour patrol launches, construction site safety boats etc. If you will be using larger boats with accommodation and the capacity to cruise or work further offshore you are likely to need a certificate within the motor cruising programme such as Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster Offshore. There are two types of Advanced certificate:

a)  A course completion certificate awarded by a training centre on successful completion of a two-day training course

b) A certificate of competence awarded by the RYA/MCA on successful completion of an exam

If you need a Powerboat Advanced certificate in order to work on board a commercial craft subject to the MCA's codes of practice, you will need to get it commercially endorsed. You can then work on commercial vessels up to 24m in length, operating in category 3, 4, 5 and 6 waters - that is up to 20 miles from a safe haven. Please note: it is only possible to commercially endorse an RYA/MCA Powerboat Advanced Certificate of Competence (option b above). The only exception to this is if you were awarded a course completion certificate (option a above) prior to 1 January 2005, in which case you may obtain a commercial endorsement without having to pass the exam.
