The voyage begins in Memphis, where passengers can visit the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, take in a show at one of the nightclubs along legendary Beale Street, or tour Elvis Presley's mansion, Graceland. After a day of cruising, the ship stops at Paducah, Kentucky, where you can admire the more than 50 murals on the floodwall along Water Street before exploring the National Quilt Museum. The next day, the ship travels through the Barkley Lock and past the stunning coves and limestone bluffs of the Cumberland River's Lake Barkley– a view best enjoyed from the balcony of your stateroom. In Dover, Tennessee, guests visit historic Fort Donelson National Park and learn about the garrison's role during the Civil War. There’s nothing quite so Americana as getting to know the many personalities of this 2,350-mile stretch, flowing from northern Minnesota’s Lake Itasca through 10 states until it reaches Louisiana , where the Mississippi River Delta gives way to the Gulf of Mexico.

The slow, meandering journeys of Mississippi River cruises have long proven an ideal way to discover the distinct stories of America’s heartland. In the words of Mark Twain (which no Mississippi River story would be complete without), the towns and cities located on the mighty river's shores are “cheering to the spirit” and “reposeful as a dreamland,” with “nothing to hang a fret or a worry upon.”

After American Queen Voyages shut down in February, only two Mississippi River cruise lines currently remain in operation.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, American Cruise Lines (ACL) has a fleet of more than 20 American-built ships sailing across the country and remains family-owned and American-crewed. ACL offers a Mississippi River fleet of three luxurious 180-passenger modern riverboats– American Melody , American Symphony , and American Serenade —plus two classic paddlewheel ships, the 180-passenger American Splendor and the 150-passenger American Heritage.

The new kid on the Mississippi is the Viking Mississippi, a 386-passenger, five-deck vessel that first set sail in September 2022. The cutting-edge cruise is Viking’s first foray in the US, adding to their fleet of more than 90 ocean, river, and expedition vessels navigating the world’s seven continents.

What is the average cost of a Mississippi River cruise?

For an 8- or 9-day cruise, the average cost of a Mississippi River cruise is around $4,000 per person in a stateroom. Although prices might seem high initially, many of these cruises include extras that aren’t always complimentary on ocean cruises such as free WiFi, at least one free shore excursion in every port, paid port taxes and fees, and a pre-cruise hotel stay. Viking offers complimentary beer, wine, and soft drinks with onboard lunch and dinner. Meanwhile, American Cruise Lines offers complimentary beer, wine, cocktails, and soft drinks. What is the best time of year to go on a river cruise?

Spring (late March through mid-June) and autumn (September through November) are the best times of year to go on a river cruise in the US. Spring blossoms add a colorful touch to the shoreline, and you can never go wrong with autumn foliage. The temperatures are mild, if not pleasantly cool, and passengers are eager to welcome a new spring travel season—or to enjoy one last autumn river adventure before winter arrives.

What month is best for a Mississippi River cruise?

If we had to pick just one, September is the best month for a Mississippi River cruise. The weather is usually mild with less likelihood of rain, and autumn colors are beginning to paint the shoreline. Keep in mind, however, that the Mississippi is the fourth largest river in the world—so temperatures any time of year are not going to be the same in warmer Louisiana as they are in cooler Minnesota.

22-day Mississippi River Odyssey: New Orleans to Red Wing, Minnesota

Enjoy the charms of America’s great river on a journey aboard the Viking Mississippi from New Orleans to Red Wing, departing September 20. Custom built to sail American waters, the vessel features river-facing staterooms with either French or step-out balconies.

With so many fascinating shore excursions to choose from, it’s well worth taking time to tour the St. Louis Arch . Opened in 1965, the monument to America’s westward expansion is far more than just a stunning photo by the riverside. Venture underground between the arch legs for a museum. Climb aboard a tram to be transported 630 feet up to the top of America’s tallest monument for some stunning views.

12-day Heart of the Delta: Memphis to New Orleans

The 386-guest Viking Mississippi spans five decks, making it one of the largest passenger vessels on the Mississippi. Inaugurated in 2022, the ship features a modern Scandinavian design with an infinity pool and a two-story Explorers’ Lounge observation area similar to its ocean ships. Directly in front of the Explorer’s Lounge is an expanded outdoor seating area known as The Bow. Three restaurants serve both Southern regional cuisine and international favorites.

The cruise starts in Memphis on November 14 and includes stops in Rosedale, Greenville, Vicksburg, and Natchez in Mississippi as well as St. Francisville, Baton Rouge, and Darrow in Louisiana, ending in New Orleans. It stretches 2,340 miles from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. Due to its popularity, there are plenty of options for overnight Mississippi River Cruises on the three major cruise lines that offer US river cruises. 

Their cruise options span five days to 22 days. Cruisers can choose to explore the lower Mississippi River, upper Mississippi River, or both. 

The Mississippi River flows through the following states: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana. 

Though these states may be less popular for tourism than California, New York, or Florida, a Mississippi River cruise excitingly brings them attention.

If you're a guest of a US river cruise on the Mississippi, you will discover the region as you visit places like the National Great Rivers Museum and Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site in Illinois. You may also stop by the Mississippi River Museum in Tennessee, and Natchez National Historical Park in Mississippi, just to name a few.

Some cruises span another river in addition to a stop or two along the Mississippi River. For example, this is the case with an Ohio River Cruise and Mississippi River Cruise or an Illinois River Cruise and Mississippi River Cruise .

Upper Mississippi River Cruise vs. Lower Mississippi River Cruise

Because there is so much to see along this great river, cruise lines often offer an Upper or Lower Mississippi River cruise or a long cruise that explores both. (To us, this just means more reasons to be a repeat cruiser!) 

You can’t go wrong with either cruise, but in our humble opinion, a Lower Mississippi River Cruise is a bit more exciting. 

On the other hand, an Upper Mississippi River Cruise is more low-key in its ports and activities, drawing more on US History than the hustle and bustle of more major southern cities (like New Orleans).

Ohio River Cruise (Along with Mississippi River Stops) 

The Ohio River is 981 miles, travels from Pennsylvania to Illinois, and then flows into the Mississippi River. The river's path is along the border of a few additional states: West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky. 

“Ohio” is a Native American name that translates to “Good River.” And what could be better than a river cruise on its waters? 

American Queen Voyages has several cruises that sail the Ohio and Mississippi rivers . Here are a few options: 

• A nine-day river cruise that begins in Pittsburgh and ends in Louisville, Kentucky. Highlights include visiting the Rosemary Clooney museum in Augusta, Kentucky, and a visit to Cincinnati, Ohio, famous for its John A. Roebling Bridge. (Which we read about in The Great Bridge , thanks to its architect of the same name.) The reverse voyage, a nine-day sailing from Louisville to Pittsburgh, differs slightly only by one city. 
• Over nine days, sail from Louisville, Kentucky, to St. Louis, Missouri. Taste bourbon and the cuisine of this notable “Louisville Slugger” city, and end with a Hop On Hop Off bus tour of St. Louis, where you’ll catch photo-worthy glimpses of the city’s architecture, including the Gateway Arch.  

Illinois River Cruise (Along with Mississippi River Stops)

The Illinois River is entirely contained within the state and is relatively short at 273 miles. This small river meets up with the Mighty Mississippi close to St. Louis in Grafton, Illinois. 

An example of a journey that travels on both rivers is a nine-day American Queen Voyages Upper Mississippi and Illinois River itinerary. 

Start in Ottawa, Illinois, and visit the most popular park in the state, Starved Rock State Park. Days later, complete your river cruise in St. Louis after visiting Grafton – where the Illinois River meets the Mississippi – and enjoy a taste of this iconic city in Missouri before heading home. (You can also extend your trip and tack on an Upper Mississippi itinerary!)  

Whether you are a cruise lover or not, the East Coast is a fantastic area to explore by boat. The Atlantic region has a lot of great ports.

The typical timeframe of an east coast United States River Cruise is between eight and 11 days. If you’re cruising the northeast, you should plan for late spring, summer, or early fall. The opposite season (winter) may be best if you want to cruise Florida’s waterways.

Hudson River Cruises

The most beloved river in New York is the Hudson River. This body of water flows from the north to the south for 315 miles. It begins in the Adirondack Mountains at Lake Tear of Clouds and flows to New York City, and out to the Atlantic Ocean.

A river cruise in the US on the Hudson River usually lasts eight days, stopping along sought-after locations like Albany, Hyde Park, West Point, and of course, New York City. 

American Cruise Lines operates eight-day cruises on the Hudson River during September and October when it’s prime time for leaf-peeping. If you’re keen on photography, this could be a splendid time to capture the colors of the fall foliage in all their glory )if mother nature is kind enough to show off during your cruise). 

Stops along your journey will showcase amazing spots such as the Vanderbilt Mansion, Olana State Historic Site, Sleepy Hollow, and West Point Military Academy. 

Southern River Cruises

Head south for some palm trees, delicious southern cooking, and Civil War history. Traveling on waterways in the USA to experience this southeastern part of the country with a lot of heart is sure to be memorable. 

Cumberland and Tennessee River Cruises

The Cumberland River is 688 miles long and runs through Kentucky and Tennessee. The Tennessee River, a tributary to the Ohio River, is 653 miles long and runs through Tennessee, Alabama, and Kentucky.   

A Tennessee River Cruise itinerary with American Cruise Lines visits cities that are very appealing to us over the course of eight days. We loved sailing with American Cruise Lines for a Tennessee River Cruise from Chatanooga to Nashville and were wowed by the beauty of the river.

Highlights include visiting Nashville for a taste of country music, meandering through charming small towns with historical significance like Wheeling, West Virginia, and disembarking in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

St. Johns River Cruises

Florida’s St. Johns River is approximately 320 miles long. It travels from Jacksonville in northern Florida to Ocala National Forest, near Central Florida’s famous city of Orlando . 

You can book a closed-loop itinerary from Jacksonville with American Cruise Lines. Eight incredible days of discovery take you to exciting spots where you’ll learn more about Florida’s wildlife, its connection to golf, and see historic homes.  

Ports highlighted during a river cruise on the St. Johns River in Florida include Jacksonville, Green Cove Springs, Palatka, Lake George, Amelia Island, and St. Augustine. 

If you sign up for a St. Johns River cruise you can expect to travel on Mill Cove Lake near Jacksonville and onto the Tolomato River (part of the Intercoastal Waterway) near St. Augustine and Amelia Island. 

This is an exciting trip for wildlife lovers. You will have a chance to spot alligators, manatees, and bald eagles in their natural habitat. Don’t forget to pack travel binoculars and your telephoto camera lenses!

What Cruise Lines Operate River Cruises in the US? 

We’ve mentioned a few in this post and, if you noticed, repeat many of the same cruise line names for different itineraries. This is because there are not as many river cruise lines sailing in America as on other continents, like Europe. 

The rules and regulations cruise lines need to follow to operate in the United States are stringent. This means abiding by requirements like their vessels being built within the country and a certain percentage of the crew being US citizens. 

The three major US river cruise lines are as follows: 

American Cruise Lines

• American Queen Voyages – no longer operating as of February 2024
• Viking 

Due to the increased popularity and demand for American river cruises in recent years, these cruise lines have upgraded the interiors of their existing river cruise boats. We are excited they have ordered new boats for the future! 

Let’s dive a little deeper into each cruise line.

American Cruise Lines has one of the largest United States river cruise portfolios. Across all their cruises, they operate nearly year-round. They offer cruises on the Mississippi River, in New England, the southeast United States, the Pacific Northwest, and even Alaska. 

Five different classes of cruise ships comprise their fleet; they vary in guest capacity from 90 to 180 passengers, as follows:

• American River Boats (180 guests)
• Eagle Class (109 guests)
• Constellation Class (170 guests)
• Authentic Paddlewheelers (180)
• Independence Class (90)

Seventeen American Cruise Lines vessels fall into one of the five categories of cruise ships above. They operate 35 itineraries that travel to 34 states. 

Their focus on sustainability makes our earth-loving hearts happy. They source local ingredients as much as possible and have upgraded their ships to reduce energy consumption. What's more is that American Cruise Lines is committed to reducing the use of single-use plastics, just like we are .

Viking Cruises

Though Viking has been around for decades on other continents, they’re the newest to the American market. They debuted their first US river cruise ship on the Mississippi River in 2022. 

Many people are loyal to the Viking brand for worldwide river cruise travel in Europe, Asia, and Africa. They offer an entry-level luxurious experience at an affordable price.

An investment with Viking for a US River Cruise will be money spent in confidence, knowing the product you’ll get for remaining loyal to the Viking brand. 

Their Viking ship that sails in the US is aptly named “Viking Mississippi.” Its guest capacity is 386, and they have 148 crew onboard. The river ship has five decks; three and a half of those decks are made up of guest cabins. 

American Queen Voyages

As of February 2024, American Queen Voyages has ceased operations .

American Queen Voyages (AQV) has three different classes of ships that indicate where they sail: 

• Lakes and Oceans

Their river cruise boats have the famous red paddlewheels that make them easy to identify. You may know the brand by its former company name, American Queen Steamboat Company.

The names of their vessels all begin with “American”: American Queen, American Countess, American Duchess, and American Empress. 

Their lakes and oceans boat names begin with “Ocean,” and they currently have two: Ocean Voyages and Ocean Navigator. These vessels do not offer balconies with their cabins, whereas the river cruise and expedition boats with AQV do.

Lastly is their expedition ship, Ocean Victory, which sails in Alaska. 

Cost of US River Cruises

If it’s your first time on a river cruise, you’ll be happy to learn that a lot is included in the cost. Things such as all meals, excursions, and gratuities are usually already worked into the price you’ll see when you browse options online. 

River cruises are one of the best ways to explore the world (including the United States). Some people think that river cruises are expensive, but to us, the value of a river cruise is noteworthy .  

Expect to pay anywhere from $1,000 to $14,000 per person for a river cruise in the United States. The range varies depending on the length of the sailing you pick, like whether you go on a river cruise for seven or 14 days, the time of year, and the cabin you select. For example, an interior cabin will likely cost less than an exterior cabin with a balcony. 

Some river cruises include beer and wine with lunch and dinner. Others have it as an optional upgrade along with the usual drinks packages you can add to any cruise.

United States and North American Small Ship Cruise Options, Beyond Rivers Cruises

The US is a massive country with many rivers and other water bodies. It means the options to cruise American waters are not limited to rivers. 

There are also lake cruises, cruises on bays, and ocean cruises. Cruise options are plentiful, and you can sail for nearly a week if that’s all your time and budget allows or for two to three weeks if you wish.

Perhaps river cruise boats that are 200 passengers or less aren’t for you, but you’d enjoy a ship with over 1,000 passengers with more entertainment options onboard, like multiple pools and thermal spas . If this is the case, you can cruise from many different ports along the coastal United States on bigger ships, as we did along the coast of California with Princess Cruises . 

While these ships cannot possibly sail small bodies of water, like rivers, it’s possible to get the feel of a small ship aboard larger cruise ships if you look for cruise lines offering ship-within-a-ship experiences . (Which we highly recommend for big cruise ships!)

Great Lakes Cruises in America

If you want to sail the northern part of the United States but don’t want to head west to the Columbia and Snake Rivers, Great Lakes Cruises are a terrific option. They take guests on massive, breathtaking lakes that sail between the United States and Canada. Read more about Great Lakes cruises and decide what's right for you.

Historic River Cruises from Baltimore (Sailing the Chesapeake Bay and Inland Passage)

You can sail on the Chesapeake Bay out of the Port of Baltimore. While this isn’t technically a river, it will give you a similar feel to river cruising. This is especially true because American Cruise Lines offers a cruise here on the same ships that sail rivers. 

Some cities visited during a six-day itinerary on the Chesapeake Bay with American Cruise Lines include Baltimore and Annapolis, Maryland, and Yorktown and Williamsburg, Virginia .  This cruise sails numerous times in late October, early November, and May. 

East Coast Inland Passage Cruise that Sails Through Charleston

Many people wonder how you can cruise on an overnight ship and visit Charleston, a highly sought after destination on the east coast, in South Carolina. In this case, American Cruise Lines has two itineraries that may be of interest to you. They travel through the East Coast Inland Passage .

One is their cruise that begins in Baltimore, Maryland, and ends at Amelia Island in Florida, just south of the Florida-Georgia border. This 15-day cruise sails in October, November, or April and allows passengers to see more of the southeast coast than any other option. 

Enjoy stops at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina (in the Outer Banks ), Hilton Head, South Carolina, and Savannah and Jekyll Island, Georgia , to name a few. 

If you’re looking for a shorter cruise that's something like eight days, consider a cruise that begins in Charleston and ends at Amelia Island. This essentially cuts the 15-day itinerary in half, but you still get to stop at key locations like Savannah, Hilton Head, St. Simons Island, and Jekyll Island .  

Sail Maine’s Coast

We embarked on a four-day summer sailing aboard the schooner American Eagle along coastal Maine. The trip was delightful and definitely a favorite vacation memory. 

As our trip report recalls , sailing on a schooner isn’t luxurious or fancy. It is, however, a unique experience where you bond with other guests and enjoy being on deck most of the time you’re on the water. You'll certainly quickly appreciate the beauty of Maine.

You can help with the sails if you want and enjoy being row-boated to the shore to explore Maine’s beautiful terrain on one of the many islands that are part of the state. The ship goes where the captain chooses – and there's really no area that isn't worthy of a stop in the captain's repertoire.

Puget Sound Cruises from Seattle

If Great Lakes Cruises and Chesapeake Bay cruises make your eyes perk up, then consider a Puget Sound Cruise on the west coast. 

American Cruise Lines offers two itineraries in this breathtaking area: one is a Grand Puget Sound cruise that lasts 11 days and the other is eight days. Both sail roundtrip from Seattle and visit the gorgeous city of Victoria, British Columbia, the only Canadian stop on the journey. 

They have scattered dates of availability; the longer Grand Puget Sound cruise is available throughout spring, summer and fall, while the shorter Puget Sound and San Juan Islands Cruise takes place throughout July.

Mega-Ship Cruise Itineraries Sailing from United States Ports 

If small ship cruising isn’t for you, or perhaps you’re desiring a change of scenery from the usual small-ship cruise you sign up for, a bigger cruise ship may be the solution.

There are more differences than similarities when it comes to river cruises vs. ocean cruises , but we can all agree their commonality is a love for traveling on the water with hospitality in mind. 

A mega-ship cruise out of a United States port doesn’t stay within the United States for the entire journey. But you can start in the country and travel to places like Bermuda, or the Caribbean, on these cruises. (Don’t forget your passport!) 

You can even sail to Disney’s island, Castaway Cay , from Florida. 

United States cruise ports of embarkation are all around the country, including the California coast, Seattle, Baltimore, Charleston, Galveston, New Jersey, and Florida.

First impressions of a US river cruise on American Queen

I've taken several river cruises in my time as a cruise writer, but until this summer, they were all on foreign rivers like the Rhine and the Mekong. I thought I knew what to expect on U.S.-based American Queen river cruises — I researched the ports, pored over facts about the boat and even looked up local attractions in advance — but nothing prepared me for the sheer splendor of seeing American Queen Voyages' most iconic vessel in person.

My first glimpse of the boat in the wild (or, rather, docked in Pittsburgh, on the Ohio River near Acrisure Stadium, where the Steelers play) left me impressed. Not only was it a lot bigger than I expected, but it immediately made me feel like I had stepped back in time — or, perhaps, onto a ride at Disney World.

A quintessential American paddlewheel steamboat, American Queen looks every bit the part. Its crisp white exterior, bright red paddlewheel and black smokestacks topped with festive crowns befitting a queen complete the picture of grandeur. Wherever the boat goes, it draws curious, awestruck stares, and locals line up along the riverbanks to greet it when it arrives and wave goodbye when it leaves.

From its lacy gingerbread trim to its shrill-but-wholesome calliope music, the boat evokes an air of southern Gilded Age luxury so strong I fully expected to bump into Mark Twain in one of the onboard lounges.

Here's what I loved and what I didn't during my voyage.

What I loved

The boat's size.

Designed to carry about 400 passengers, American Queen is the largest paddlewheeler in the U.S. river cruise industry. The fact that there were only about 250 cruisers on board during my sailing was an added bonus. The vessel's size means that it has some amenities — like a plunge pool, fitness center, spa, a navigational chart room and theater with a stage — not found on other riverboats. But the low capacity meant most areas didn't feel crowded.

Another pleasant result was that we frequently ran into the same people over and over again, which added to the jovial and somewhat familial onboard vibe.

The ports of call

While ocean vessels often focus on large cities or beachy destinations, the small towns found along American rivers are replete with charm and hospitality that are hard to come by elsewhere. The locals I met were exceptionally welcoming, and American Queen's daily tour schedule directed me to hidden-gem attractions I might have otherwise overlooked.

Free for the vessel's passengers in all ports, buses run along a predetermined route at regular 15- or 30-minute intervals. Designated stops along the way feature points of interest where passengers can hop off for a visit before catching the next bus to another attraction or back to the boat.

Highlights for me included the Schroeder Saddletree Factory Museum — where a local family spent two generations making the inner frames for horse saddles — and the historic mansions in Madison, Indiana, as well as the Augusta Distillery in Augusta, Kentucky. There, we deviated from the suggested activities and stopped in for an excellent tasting where we were allowed to draw or "thief" our own bourbon from barrels where it was aging.

The focus is largely on smaller stops, but that doesn't mean there aren't big cities on the list, too. The most powerful place I visited was the Underground Railroad Museum during our call on Cincinnati. Exhibits covered everything from the history of slavery to modern-day human trafficking and implicit bias. It was a sobering look at the amount of work we still have left to do.

As I grow older, I've noticed I prefer to slow down a bit when I cruise. I'm no longer at an age where I want to see and do everything at a break-neck pace . Given that most U.S. river cruise passengers tend to be in their golden years, the pace of onboard life is as leisurely as a float down a river. I found plenty of ways to relax, from joining low-key hosted trivia and doing self-led puzzles during the day to listening to live music at night.

I spent many an evening on the boat's outer decks, taking in the sights from passing towns, riverside factories and locks, which often left mere inches on either side of the vessel during transit.

While ashore, I enjoyed leisurely strolls along the riverbank whenever I wasn't lazily making my way between points of interest.

The slower, more relaxed pace helped me to maximize my enjoyment because I felt like I was able to be in the moment instead of thinking about where I had to be next. Because I was traveling with my dad on our first father-daughter trip , that was especially important to me.

The historical elements

The entire American Queen experience — from the ship's exterior design and interior furnishings to the history of the places we visited — evokes the mid to late 1800s. Although it has backup engines that help with maneuvering, American Queen boasts a large wooden paddlewheel that's powered by a pair of 90-year-old steam engines rescued from a retired steamboat.

Elements like a steam-powered calliope (which one of the onboard musicians plays several times on each cruise, usually during sailaways) and the J.M. White Dining Room with its serious New Orleans ambiance add to the feeling of authenticity throughout.

Additionally, the lounges and cabins are largely furnished with antiques that fit with the time period the boat represents. My personal favorite is the Mark Twain Gallery, a rich, warm, dark lounge that's great for working, reading, lounging with a cup of coffee or anachronistically checking email at the provided bank of computers. Bonus: Display cases filled with antique oddities flank both sides of the lounge, and the windows in between offer both cozy seating alcoves and views into the dining room below.

A resident "riverlorian" — a historian who is well-versed in the history of the rivers on which the vessel sails — also gives several talks during each voyage. Ours provided lots of fun facts about the efficiency and capacity of cargo riverboats, which far exceed those of semi-trucks and trains.

The outdoor spaces

True to its name, the Front Porch — the boat's main outdoor lounge area — was just that but on a grand scale. Rocking chairs and swings often made me feel like I was on the covered front porch of a southern farmhouse as we glided past small towns and made our way through a fascinating system of locks along the way.

When we were underway, I spent a lot of time there, either writing or reading. Plus, with the Front Porch Cafe buffet attached, it was easy to enjoy alfresco lunch or dinner, weather permitting.

Other great areas included the River Bar, which affords spectacular views of the paddlewheel in action (but beware of the calliope, which is extremely loud and will startle you if you're not expecting it) and the boat's two sun deck areas — one near the plunge pool and one just outside the Chart Room.

Also, keep your eye out for hidden outdoor areas that will allow you to view the paddlewheel up-close.

The surprises

Hidden outdoor areas aren't the only surprises on American Queen sailings.

I thoroughly enjoyed poking around the vessel and discovering new areas, including The Theater, which is used only a few times per voyage to show movies.

I'm also a fan of the Engine Room Bar, where I enjoyed nightly music and views of the boat's paddlewheel. But the secret lies behind a door in the bar with a sign that's barely noticeable. Pop inside, and you can make your way down to the engine room, which is open to passengers interested in learning more about how the vessel operates.

Another surprise came when I stumbled on a series of doors in the same hallway that leads to the Engine Room Bar. On each was a list of cabin numbers, indicating that my cabin — 505, an open-veranda suite — had access to the Grand Saloon's private balcony boxes. As a result, my dad and I had fantastic views of the shows we saw there.

However, the quirkiest surprise was that, at least once during every voyage, passengers are allowed to play the calliope. Under the guidance of the boat's pianist — calliope keys are similar to keys you'd find on a piano — any cruiser who was able to play at least five notes would receive a certificate from the captain, declaring them official calliopists.

What needs work

The staffing issues.

I would be remiss if I didn't start this section by saying that every crew member I met on the sailing was friendly, helpful and eager to please. They always gave me passing smiles, waves and greetings, no matter how busy they were, and it was obvious they were all working hard.

Like the rest of the U.S. hospitality industry, American Queen Voyages acknowledged that it is experiencing staffing shortages. Most of the things that could have been improved on my American Queen sailing were likely caused by a lack of workers. With more crew, they are almost certain to disappear.

The day I boarded, I couldn't help but notice that the back of the boat was looking kind of dingy. I saw quite a bit of dirt and grime around the paddlewheel area, with the red paint on the wheel itself looking faded. That night, while I was outside watching the stars as we sailed, I noticed the outer decks were overrun by an alarming number of spiders and their webs.

It took several days, but during our call on Cincinnati, I returned to the boat to find a crew member hard at work scrubbing each of the decks and climbing up into the eaves to wipe down the cobwebs with rags. (I'm unsure if it was part of the regular schedule, but I suspect it might have had to do with the fact that John Waggoner, the line's founder and chairman, was booked on the next voyage.) The engine room crew also worked diligently to repair paddlewheel boards and power wash the structure to restore the wheel to its bright red color before our cruise was up.

Another place where the experience fell short was the onboard dining. Overall, the food was decent. I'm a picky eater, but on American Queen I was able to find something I enjoyed at every meal. However, on the second morning, during breakfast, I cut into my pancakes and was dismayed when raw batter oozed out.

Not wanting to make a big deal about it (particularly because we arrived 15 minutes prior to the closing time), I didn't say anything. Our waitress, who was experienced enough to see there was a problem without my saying a word, sent the head waiter over to ask what was wrong. I quietly told him, and he apologized, stressing that passengers should always speak up so the crew can do better next time.

That same head waiter sat us every night at dinner and always made sure we had what we needed. However, by the final night of the sailing, he looked frazzled and exhausted. All of the waitstaff did.

In fact, we hardly saw our dinner waiter. Every night, he greeted us, took our orders and brought each course, but there was virtually no following up in between courses to see how we were doing. I expect he was too busy juggling a large number of tables to have time to check in routinely with any of them.

One of our last nights at dinner, about halfway through, we noticed broken glass on the table. It's obvious something broke before we sat down. It was cleaned up, but why the table setting wasn't changed is a mystery. We did alert our waiter before we left, just so he wouldn't cut himself while cleaning up.

I found little requests were often met with lackluster service, too. My dad loves a banana with his breakfast each morning. On days when they weren't immediately available at the buffet, he would ask for one. It wasn't a problem until one morning when a particularly haggard waiter went to grab one for us and came back a few minutes later with an apology that he "just can't find them right now."

There were other incidents, too. From our cabin, per instructions from the in-room literature, we called the front desk twice to request an ironing board, which never showed up. Neither did our room service breakfast order, despite our having put the menu card outside our door well before the deadline the previous night. We didn't pursue the ironing board further and instead simply wore rumpled clothes to dinner, but a call to the front desk about the breakfast meant food showed up at our door within 20 minutes.

These are, of course, small niggles that didn't greatly affect my enjoyment of the cruise overall. But, for such a luxurious ship, they were a bit unexpected and certainly not reflective of an experience that starts at about $3,000 per person for weeklong cruise.

It's impossible to talk about the heyday of riverboating without also broaching some painful subjects. While wealthy, white travelers were busy enjoying themselves on riverboats up and down U.S. waterways in the early part of the 1800s, enslaved people fought for freedom throughout the country — particularly in the pre-Civil War south.

With that in mind, the fact that — even on my recent 2022 sailing — American Queen's onboard guest population is predominantly white while the crew is predominantly Black struck me as particularly poignant.

When I asked about the line's demographics, a representative from American Queen Voyages told me that the company is actively looking to expand its customer reach.

"Like all cruise lines, we are always seeking guests new to cruise and new to U.S. river cruising," said Michael Hicks, a spokesperson for American Queen Voyages.

AQV also prides itself on hiring from the local communities along the rivers it travels. Given that American Queen usually sails the Mississippi and hires from the surrounding communities, many of its employees are Black.

"American Queen Voyages riverboat crew members come from across the United States," Hicks said. "An emphasis is placed on hiring from port partner cities, including St. Louis, Memphis, Cincinnati and New Orleans, as well as regional communities including Jackson, Mississippi; Metairie, Louisiana; and Owensboro, Kentucky."

Additionally, the line is working with local groups in the places it visits in order to make sure programming is historically accurate, even if it means telling stories that are sobering and difficult to hear.

"American Queen Voyages works with the ports [it visits] to select and curate experiences that tell the full history of destinations," said Hicks. "These include such rich and immersive experiences as the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati; the Hotel Metropolitan in Paducah, Kentucky; The B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center in Cleveland, Mississippi; the Mississippi Delta Chinese Heritage Museum in Terrene Landing, Mississippi; and the Natchez Museum of African American History and Culture in Natchez, Mississippi.

"We are continually working with convention and visitors bureaus and [using] these organizations' local expertise to improve, as well as provide new and diverse experiences for our guests."

For some reason, the boat's garbage is stored forward on the main deck, where it sits in open dumpsters outside. My cabin, which was four decks up, was almost directly above it. Whenever I wanted to enjoy the veranda outside my cabin, I was met with the overpowering smell of rotting refuse baking in the 80-degree heat. For that reason, I didn't utilize my room's outdoor space as much as I would have liked.

One suggestion for fixing this would be to store the trash below deck or move it to an outdoor area at the back of the boat, where the wind would blow the smell back over the wake instead of into passenger areas.

The environmental impacts

In general, cruises aren't known for being particularly environmentally friendly, but at a time when other lines are making a big deal of becoming more fuel efficient and cutting back on single-use products — particularly plastics — I was surprised by some of what I saw on American Queen.

First, it's important to acknowledge that paddlewheel vessels are less fuel efficient than boats that operate with more modern engines. Part of the charm of American Queen is the paddlewheel itself, so some allowances are made by default. A bit of fuel efficiency is sacrificed in the name of nostalgia.

However, the line could try harder to make some smaller things greener. These were most noticeable in the boat's Front Porch Cafe buffet area, where plastic spoons and paper bowls were the only options available next to the soft-serve ice cream machine, and paper cups with plastic lids were put out for beverages, rather than reusable cups, glasses or mugs that could be washed between uses.

The other experience that made me cringe was when I boarded one of the line's free charter buses for a ride to town during one of our port stops. I was one of five people on a bus built for 50. It struck me as super wasteful. It's likely the ship has no way of knowing how many people will need the buses later in the day, but perhaps smaller vehicles could be considered as alternatives after the initial passenger rush dies down.

Bottom line

American Queen is a beautiful boat that allows modern-day travelers to experience some of what life on the rivers might have been like 200 years ago. It's an impressive ode to history, complete with comfortable and richly furnished accommodations, great service, delicious food and visits to some of America's small towns. Although American Queen Voyages, like the rest of the domestic travel market, is still struggling with staffing issues, the experience was superior overall.

The cruise experience is largely geared toward older travelers, but that shouldn't stop younger vacationers from checking it out. Anyone who has an appreciation for relaxation, old-timey vibes and the Americana associated with tiny riverside towns will likely enjoy a sailing on American Queen.

Eagle Preserve Rafting Float Adventure

Look for bald eagles soaring overhead as you raft down the gentle Chilkat River through the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve. Alaska's astounding beauty and vast wilderness are unlike any other destination in the U.S. – and even in the world. While you can plan land-based trips to the state, many of Alaska's majestic snowcapped mountains, pristine forests, glacial waterways and abundant wildlife are in remote locations, only reachable by plane or by boat. That's just one of the many reasons why Alaska is one of the most popular cruise destinations in the world.

If you're ready to stop dreaming and start planning a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to The Great Land, here are tips on the best times to cruise Alaska.

Best Overall Time: Shoulder Seasons

Best time for warmer weather, best time for wildlife viewing, best time for salmon fishing, best time for the northern lights, best time for shore excursions.

If you want to score a deal and have fewer crowds, travel during the shoulder seasons: May and September. In these months, cruise fares are typically lower and ships are not as full, offering more cabin availability. However, with changes in the global climate bringing more moderate temperatures to Alaska, and the cruise season now extending into April and October, cruisers can also expect to find deals in April and October. There will be fewer sailings to choose from, but you may find lower pricing and avoid the peak-season crowds on the ship and in the ports.

In addition, select shore excursions may be available at a discount in the spring and fall. If you're planning on exploring Alaska on your own before or after your cruise, you'll also find cheaper hotel rates at the beginning or end of the cruise season.

Alaska's weather can change dramatically, especially the further north you go, no matter the month or season. While the weather may not be as predictable in April as in the middle of summer, Alaska can be beautiful in springtime with temperatures in the mid-40s, according to Tyler Hickman, senior vice president of Icy Strait Point, an Alaska Native-owned port in Hoonah and a port of call in Southeast Alaska. Hickman says there are long stretches of sunny days and crisp, clear evenings, offering the opportunity for late-season viewing of the northern lights . He also adds that April is one of the favorite times of year for local Alaskans.

If you're interested in cruising to Alaska in April, Norwegian Cruise Line has a few options, including weekly sailings on Norwegian Bliss beginning April 6. The line also offers Alaska itineraries through the end of October. Other lines sailing the extended season in Alaska in late April include Princess Cruises , Holland America Line , Royal Caribbean International , Carnival Cruise Line , UnCruise Adventures and Lindblad Expeditions.

If you prefer to travel in the fall, early October temperatures are usually in the 50s, while the end of the month brings snow in the higher elevations. The days are longer and there are no crowds, so it may be an ideal time to visit if you're not interested in the summer outdoor experiences. Norwegian, Holland America and Seabourn Cruise Line offer sailings in October.

If you'd prefer warmer weather for your cruise, the summer season in Alaska runs from mid-May to mid-September. During that period, daytime temperatures typically range from 60 to 80 degrees, though they can drop into the 40s overnight. You can expect to have between 16 to 24 hours of daylight in the warmer season. May is considered the driest month, with around a 25% chance of precipitation, but the rain becomes more frequent throughout the summer.

Alaska.org, a website run by local Alaskans that provides travel information and recommendations, advises that the best time to visit in summer is from June 15 to July 15. This 30-day period is regarded as the peak season for warm, dry weather – and it's the perfect time for outdoor activities such as wildlife viewing, fishing and hiking. If you want to experience the most "midnight sun," plan to cruise a few weeks before or after the summer solstice – the longest day of the year – which falls on June 20 in 2024.

Come September, the days are generally shorter, rainier and cooler – but not always. You might get lucky with some unseasonably warm days amid the beautiful fall foliage ; as a bonus, September also means no bugs and fewer crowds.

If you have school-age children, you'll probably need to travel midsummer, during peak season. However, if you're flexible on dates, there's really no bad time to visit this magical destination. Mountain peaks shrouded in clouds or misty days cruising Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve in late April are as beautiful as sunny days hiking through Tongass National Forest or whale watching on an excursion out of Icy Strait Point in July.

According to Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, one of the top destinations on the Inside Passage itinerary, wildlife viewing is possible year-round, especially if you have your binoculars at hand. When you're not watching for turquoise ice calving in the bay from the glaciers, you might see humpback whales as long as 65 feet or black and brown bears up to 10 feet tall – as well as orcas, harbor and Dall's porpoises, sea otters, harbor seals, mountain goats, sea lions, seabirds, and bald eagles soaring overhead. And that's just what you can view from the ship.

During cruises through the park, rangers board the ships to offer commentary and information about the marine and terrestrial wildlife. They also help spot whales or other animals along the way. One of the highlights while cruising slowly through the park is to go outside on the bow of the ship – or even out onto your veranda – to listen to the incredible silence of this otherworldly place. You may hear nothing at all, or perhaps you'll be treated to the sounds of birds in the distance or the swoosh from a whale's blowhole before it dives down below the water's surface.

It's possible to view certain animals and marine life throughout the year, according to Hickman. "Whale sightings are consistent from May through September, with fewer occurring in April and October as they migrate from or to Hawaii for the winter," he says, adding: "Even on a foggy day when you can't see the whales, you can still hear them and feel their presence – and that's almost as incredible as seeing them from a ship or along the coastline."

If you're interested in spotting brown bears, here is Hickman's advice: "Bear sightings in the spring will depend on the snowpack and when they are leaving hibernation. This year we had very good bear viewing along the Spasski River starting in May when the coastal brown bears emerged from hibernation."

He adds, "They feed on the grass of the valley and eat skunk cabbage roots in May and early June. As the berries start to emerge in June, it holds many of the same bears, and as we get into mid-July, the salmon start heading upstream. There is a constant food source from May through September at Spasski. Many of the other bear viewing areas do not have the same features we have, and it leads to people thinking that bears are only around when fish are in the rivers."

Chichagof Island – the location of Hoonah and Icy Strait Point – was given the nickname "Bear Island" by National Geographic. The island boasts one to two brown bears per square mile, making it one of the largest brown bear populations in the world. Hickman says you're nearly guaranteed to see bears on one of Icy Strait Point's bear-watching tours. Icy Point Strait also offers whale watching adventures and other treks into the wilderness.

Alaska.org points to May through September as the best time for wildlife viewing, though you can spot some animals year-round, like moose or orcas. The website also advises that fly-in bear viewing starts in May but is at its best in July.

If you are an avid angler – or just want to watch the bears fish for their supper – then visit Alaska during the peak salmon runs, from May to September. King salmon season begins in May and goes through the end of July. The silver salmon run lasts from July up until the end of November. Red salmon are available between mid-June and mid-August, while you can catch pink and chum salmon in the brief window from mid-July to mid-August.

If you prefer halibut or just want to get out on the ocean, the best time for this wild Pacific species is from May to September. You can also seek out many other river and ocean species, such as rainbow trout, arctic char and northern pike. Cruise lines offer fishing excursions, or you can arrange for a private or group charter in an Alaskan town like Ketchikan.

If you want to see brown bears during the salmon run, book a bear-viewing excursion in one of the ports, such as Icy Strait Point. Or, extend your trip by combining a visit to Katmai National Park and Preserve and the renowned Brooks River with a stay at Brooks Lodge. Brooks Falls is the site for iconic photos of bears catching salmon that are jumping over the falls, and you may be able to view the bears feasting in salmon season when the property is open, from June through mid-September. The lodge is accessible by floatplane from King Salmon. You can also add a flyover tour during your stay to see the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, an area in southern Alaska transformed by ash from the 1912 Novarupta-Katmai volcanic eruption.

Aurora season – the best time to see the northern lights in Alaska – runs from mid-August to mid-April. While some passengers cruising the Inside Passage may catch a glimpse of the phenomenon in late summer and early fall, it's not guaranteed. As southeast Alaska typically has more precipitation and clouds since it's a temperate rainforest, you likely won't find optimal conditions for aurora viewing here.

Your chances to see the lights are better the further north you go, so you may want to look at booking a cruisetour: a land and sea package that's usually offered by some of the major cruise lines from May through September. These combined trips generally include the cruise, overnight accommodations in lodges, railway journeys and motorcoach travel between destinations.

With these tours, you'll be able to visit the vast landscape of Alaska, where you can explore cities like Anchorage and Fairbanks or spend time in Denali National Park and Preserve – and you'll have a better chance to view the northern lights. Lines that offer cruisetours include Norwegian, Celebrity Cruises , Holland America, Princess and Royal Caribbean.

Since 2024 is projected to be one of the best years to view the aurora borealis in Alaska, you might want to extend your trip to venture above the Arctic Circle or into Alaska's interior for a prime viewing opportunity. Fairbanks and the Arctic region are under the auroral oval, which is where the northern lights activity is concentrated. Some of the excursions offered on an Alaskan cruise may be the most expensive tours you've seen on a ship, but they're also probably some of the coolest things you've ever thought about doing while on vacation.

Note that the probability of a tour being canceled for weather is almost the same for all tours offered between April and October, as the weather in Alaska can be unpredictable. Some of the more extreme tours, however, may not be available early or late in the season. If you want the best chance for optimal weather, consider the advice from Alaska.org and book your cruise between mid-June and mid-July.

If you're looking at splurging on a bucket list adventure while in Skagway – like Alaska Shore Tours' flightseeing helicopter adventure, which includes a dog-sledding experience on a glacier – you should check to make sure it's available the month you'll be cruising. This particular tour may not be open for booking before May or after September due to the conditions for the sled dogs.

Another over-the-top excursion dependent on optimal weather conditions is the Heli-Hike and Rail Adventure that begins in Skagway. This tour includes a helicopter ride from town that flies over glaciers and mountains, then drops you off for a roughly 5-mile guided hike to view Laughton Glacier and learn about the natural history of the area. After the hike, you'll board the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad at Glacier Station for the scenic journey through the mountains back to Skagway.

If you're interested in the Misty Fjords Flightseeing tour in Ketchikan, this thrilling ride is also best on a clear day. This Alaskan bush plane tour soars over the Misty Fjords National Monument, which has more than 2 million acres of pristine lakes, waterfalls, ancient forests and snowcapped mountains.

Tours that include activities like mountain climbing or navigating suspension bridges might also be best when done on a sunny day. The prime time for wildlife viewing and fishing, as mentioned above, will depend on what animals you're interested in seeing and which species of fish you want to catch.

The ship's excursion desk, local guides or tour providers can offer the best advice on how to plan your activities. No matter which tours you opt to take, be prepared for the ever-changing weather patterns by wearing layers – and make sure to bring a waterproof rain jacket. Before booking, you should check the individual tour operator's cancellation and refund policy.

The Bottom Line

If you're flexible as to when you can travel to Alaska, you may be able to take advantage of lower pricing, travel incentives and added perks in the shoulder seasons – and you'll have fewer crowds than in the busy summer months.

If your goal is to view wildlife, then most of the cruise season, especially from May to September, will offer ample opportunities to see bears, humpbacks whales, bald eagles and other amazing animals – depending on the itinerary and excursions you choose. You'll also be able to catch Alaska's prized salmon throughout much of the cruise season.

And if extreme adventures are going to be the highlight of your vacation, then be sure to check with the tour providers to make sure your top picks are offered when you're planning to travel. Not all tour providers operate the full seven months of the season.
