J/37C is a 37 ′ 6 ″ / 11.4 m monohull sailboat designed by Rod Johnstone and built by J Boats between 1989 and 1991.
Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
Based on the std. J/37 but a longer coach roof, modified interior (larger galley, etc.), larger anchor well and engine re-postioned aft. Also available with a winged ‘UFO’ keel. (Draft:5.2’)

J 37 vs J 37c
- Add to quote
There are a few other threads on here that discuss this, but does anyone have a good idea of all the differences between a J37 and 37c? I know engines are mounted in different places. Are there other material differences? Does the J37 have a larger cockpit? How much larger?
I am interested in these boats or at least the J37c. I would not pretend to be an expert on them, but I think the main differences are the engine placement, the draft, and a more 'lush' interior in the C version. The J37 is slightly faster but I suspect this would be going to weather only because of the deeper keel.
Thanks. Anyone else have comments?

Longer coach roof on the J37c probably translates into smaller cockpit. I wonder how much smaller..
I have only been on a J37c so can't make a direct comparison. We are looking for a boat for a couple with up to 6 people for daysails, the 37c seemed perfectly adequate for that.
The J37 and J37C are really two slightly different versions of the same boat. JBoats even merges the hull numbers of the two. See the bottom of this link to the JBoats website. J/37c Offshore Cruising Performance Sailboat
My neighbors looked at both last summer, and were surprised in thinking the 37 is better overall for a family. They just took delivery of a C&C 34++.

The J37c is a 37.5ft masthead sloop designed by Johnstone and built in fiberglass by J Boats between 1989 and 1991. The J37c is a light sailboat which is a high performer. It is stable / stiff and has a low righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a fast cruiser.
Divide this by one percent of the waterline cubed and you have the D/L ratio. For the J/37 this number is 183.92. In the normal range of D/L ratios, 100 is low, 250 medium and 400 is high. The J/37 is medium light. The midsection shows a narrow BWL (9.2 feet) and a deadrise angle of 9.5 percent. Just for fun I took the area of the midsection ...

We looked at a J37c in Annapolis and it was interesting. It is 5'3" and has a PHRF (for illustrative purposes) of 81. Our 45' Bristol is 117 so it would be quite a bit faster than what we are used to and way faster than most mid 30s cruising boats. There also are J35c and J34c models that are similar and slower than the 37.
