Meridian 459

For most yachts, the design process starts with the hull and deck, which are inked both for performance through the water and good looks by traditional standards, with the interior created later to fit that shell. In the case of the Meridian 459, I’d guess that the designers took the opposite route. First they assembled the features they wanted: two staterooms, a saloon, a galley, two large heads, a sundeck and a cockpit. Then they shrink-wrapped a boat around this package.

The 459 is the nautical version of the “cab forward” automobile that trades hood length for increased interior space. The 459 has interior volume in spades. This is a yacht that packs an incredible amount of living area and comfort into a surprisingly nimble package.

Dockside, the 459 is impressively tall, with side decks that loom far above head height amidships, drooping lower at the bow. The foredeck tilts forward, turning the usually horizontal sunpads into recliners, but putting the anchor roller at a reasonable height.

The 459 was developed from the year-old Meridian 408, an immensely popular two-stateroom/two-head motoryacht that will continue in production for the time being. In fact, all the likable features of the 408 remain untouched, with the 459 created by morphing on a large cockpit. Frankly, the cockpit is such a useful feature that it would be hard to live without it. First, it provides water-level access to the stern platform for swimming, boarding a tender or stepping onto a pier. It also allows a spacious under-deck compartment for the generator that, in turn, frees up space in the tight engineroom.

Most important, however, is that it creates a private patio for the master stateroom, complete with a sliding door. In the 408, the master stateroom is limited to a transom window, but the 459 has more light plus direct access to the cockpit. With a chair and table, it would be a pleasant place for 459 owners to start their day with coffee and croissants.

The saloon is expansive, with twin settees (the port couch includes two oh-so-comfortable Flexsteel recliners in stain-resistant Mirage leather) and a double row of windows that allows guests a wide-screen view of the scenery while seated. Though padded liners are used extensively, there is enough high-gloss cherry joinery and accents to warm the interior. Two hinged-up windows provide fresh air but could prove to be ankle-biters on the side decks.

Airflow throughout the 459 was carefully considered in the design process, and the overhead liner conceals the climate-control ducts and vents, with indirect airflow for draft-free cooling. The optional Marine Air air conditioning system has no exposed vents, and the standard Meridian 459 has an outside air ventilation system to refresh the cabin air.

Our test boat had the optional lower helm, which replaces the standard dinette in the forward corner of the saloon. Personally, I would save my money for options such as the master-stateroom entertainment system or the upgraded décor package. The flying bridge is so impeccably designed that it becomes an all-weather loft, negating the need for a lower station even in areas such as the Pacific Northwest. Completely protected by the optional soft enclosure, it remains open to the hardtop-covered afterdeck, which has its own enclosure. The result is airy and bright, and conversation can flow from deck to bridge.

The steps to the bridge are comfortably spaced, and the view from the helm is excellent in all directions, including the after corners when backing down or docking. Add the optional air conditioning/heating for the bridge, and you’ll never miss the lower helm.

The galley is down, but just barely, since the saloon sole is at knee height. In addition to touches such as the full upright refrigerator/freezer and convection/microwave oven, it has a clever pantry beneath the sole with twin bins for stowage. Lift the steps to the saloon, and you’ll find an immense stowage area, some of which can be used for the optional washer/dryer. Noticeable throughout the 459 but particularly a concern in the galley is the absence of sea rails or lips on counter surfaces.

Forward, the guest stateroom is pleasantly sized, with a double berth, two hanging lockers and a door to the large day head with shower.

The master stateroom is an absolute delight because of that slider to the cockpit. The queen innerspring berth is athwartships and, for once, rectangular, so store-bought linens will fit properly. The head is divided, with a toilet compartment aft and a separate enclosed shower forward, while a sink in a Karadon counter divides the two.

The only tight area on the 459 is the engineroom, which is reached via a lift-out panel in the saloon sole. The headroom is low, and access to the engines is improved by removing two additional sole panels, but it’s acceptable for the usual checks. With the generator absented to the under-cockpit compartment, there is both more space in the engineroom than in that of the 408 and excellent access to the sound-shielded genset.

Construction is to high standards, and the tight seams between panels are the result of mirror-smooth molds created by a computer-driven, state-of-the-art milling machine. Meridian strengthens the hull with a stringer system that extends from the stern to the bow strake and carries, via aluminum cross members, the weight and torque of the engines. Unlike builders who simply tab in the bulkheads, Meridian designed the 459 with load-bearing bulkheads that create a monocoque uni-body structure for added strength. The hull/deck joint is bonded chemically with urethane and mechanically with through-bolts every five to seven inches. With vinylester resins for blister protection, Meridian offers a 10-year hull and deck warranty.

When it comes to systems, Meridian has color-coded all the wiring for easy service. Connections are made with pin connectors, rather than crimped swages, to eliminate shorts. Because Meridian knows boat owners will add and update gear in the future, wiring buses have been provided on the flying bridge to simplify the addition of components.

Our test boat had the optional 330 hp Cummins diesel inboards (370s also are available), which replaced the standard 420 hp MerCruiser 8.1L Horizon gas motors. Though they give away 180 horsepower to the gas V-8s, the 459 still cruised at 18 to 19 knots.

Under way, handling was reassuringly predictable. Cranking the wheel hard over at full chat resulted in a calm and unruffled turn as the 459 bit solidly without cavitation, leaned over comfortably and even sliced through her own wake without fuss. Of particular note is the low sound level, which reached only 74 decibels at full throttle in the saloon and just 76 decibels in the master stateroom.

The test boat also had the Meridian-exclusive Docking On Command (D.O.C.) system, which takes the sweaty palms out of close-quarters maneuvering. Linking bow- and sternthrusters through a diamond-shape helm control, the skipper can use the D.O.C. system to spin the 459, operate either the forward or after thrusters independently or, by pushing the D.O.C. control to one side, move the 459 sideways into the tightest mooring. It’s a slick and worthwhile addition for novices and old pros alike, as long as they remember this: These are electric thrusters which, when used for extended periods, can overheat and shut down at an awkward moment. Nevertheless, it’s definitely an option I’d check off, if only for the increased resale value to a novice.

The Meridian 459 provides a comfortably spacious and thoughtfully designed interior that is sure to delight potential buyers.

Layout and Accomodations

Barefoot  is a perfect example of how a yacht can be both beautiful and functional. Her interior layout features two huge staterooms that are separated by the salon and galley, creating a very private layout for two couples on an extended getaway. Rich cherry wood cabinetry, designer fabrics and high quality carpet highlight her spacious interior.

Forward is the VIP stateroom, which truly has the amenities and space of most master staterooms. It features a centerline double berth, hanging locker, storage cabinet, opening hatch.  and private entry to a full-size head. The forward head has a separate stall shower, sink, vanity with mirror and a VacuFlush toilet.

The galley is just aft and to port with large Karadon solid surface countertops and ample storage. She has a large refrigerator with separate freezer, microwave, dishwasher, flush mount cooktop and large sink, which is perfect for entertaining family and friends over a long weekend. Under the steps and aft to the salon is a large “basement” which is great for storage. The salon is very spacious and is surrounded by full-length side windows that provide plenty of natural lighting. To starboard is an L-shaped settee with storage beneath and a beautiful  hi/lo table. To port is a long settee that converts to a sleeper. The entertainment center is aft with a large flat screen TV. Next to the entertainment system is a full-size master electrical distribution panel. Beneath the salon floor is a large engine access hatch, which leads to a very well laid out engine room.

The master stateroom entry is to port and aft of the salon and down a few steps. There is a well-designed walk around queen berth athwartships, two hanging lockers, storage lockers, and entertainment center. Another great feature is that there’s a separate shower and head entrance, separated by a vanity with a sink, mirror and storage between the two compartments. And finally, there’s a large sliding glass door aft that gives direct access to the cockpit- perfect for those cool evening sea breezes.

Moving up to the Flybridge, the seating layout features a centerline helm seat with excellent visibility. There is a companion seat to port and a large wraparound seating area to starboard and aft of the helm. Plenty of room for 7 or 8 of your closest friends. There’s also a refrigerator to keep the drinks cool on a cruise!

The aft deck has a full-length seat and there’s a wet bar with sink, and storage cabinet. One will also notice the Plexiglas wing doors for entry onto the wide side decks and protection from the elements when necessary. The wide side decks provide safety and ease of line handling, another great design feature of the 459.

Moving down a few easy steps is the cockpit. The cockpit is ideal for any type of water sport or just makes it easy to board the boat from a dock or dinghy.

The separate throttle and transmission controls were replaced with an electronic Glendinning single throttle with sync and docking modes. Also added was a joystick control for docking. Given that the original electric bow and stern thrusters thermally shut off after 30 sec. of continuous run, this was not suitable for joystick maneuvering. Both bow and thruster stern thrusters were upgraded to 24-volt long run time (10 min continuous run) Vetus thrusters. The 24V battery system has its own 24V charging system. The original thruster controller was replaced with a dual joystick design for easier use. Mast Two KVH TV3 satellite domes are mounted on each side of the mast which provide 4K TV. A third dome is a KVH LTE1 which allows for up to 25 miles offshore internet connection. Also on the mast is the latest Garmin Fantom Doppler radar with 6’ open array antenna. GPS, Sirius weather and AIS equipment is also mast mounted. The mast can be illuminated at night with white, red or blue light. All electronics were replaced with two Garmin chart plotters and a Garmin Reactor autopilot with an electronic compass. Analog tachs were replaced with Aetna digital tachs. Analog engine gauges were replaced with digital LCD display screens. The radar is the latest Garmin 6' open array Fantom Doppler radar. A fully articulating FLIR night vision camera system has also been added. The original Bennett trim tabs were replaced with Zipwake interceptors which utilize a built-in GPS to set them for maximum performance, at the helm is the interceptor LCD controller. The vessel has a Garmin AIS with an emergency button. VHF Garmin radio is new. Sirius weather antenna is on the mast. For real-time weather (wind speed, direction, and other parameters) an Airmar solid-state weather station is on the top of the mast. Weather is displayed on an additional Garmin screen (GMI 20) which helps when docking in windy conditions. The spotlight has been replaced with a Jabsco wireless control on the helm for pan tilt and changes from the spotlight to floodlight modes. This vessel even has a Garmin forward-looking sonar to help in shallow waters.There is a pan/tilt aft-facing camera to assist in maneuvering, which can be displayed on either of the Garmin chart plotters or on the TV. Aft Cockpit The aft cockpit was professionally installed at Newport Shipyard in 2014. An engineering study was completed by Gurit (a Danish firm specializing in marine construction) relating to the attachment and construction of the project. Since 2014 the aft cockpit extension has performed flawlessly. The vessel underway with the extension is stable and performance is excellent. The extension includes a built-in curved couch with Sunbrella nautical-themed stripes which match throughout the vessel. All exterior cushions have closed cell foam for no water absorption. A teak custom inlaid epoxy coated table adorns the sitting area. A port-side refrigerator is built into the extension bearing the Meridian logo engraved upon the door. Above the fridge is a clever pull-out electric grill. Multiple storage areas are under the couches. At the stern of the platform is a large hydraulic hatch for additional storage. The rear of the extension has a swim platform with a hatch for stowing the flip-out telescopic ladder. Appropriate cleats are attached to the platform. Upper Cockpit The upper cockpit has a couch which was installed as this space on a standard 408 is vacant. It has upgraded Sunbrella fabric which matches all other cushions. The couch has storage under cushions and a storage compartment. The couch has stainless cupholders. Across from the couch is a sink with storage cabinets for liquor bottles and a full-size ice maker in the adjacent cabinet. The port and starboard clear curved windows were originally plastic and were easily scratched and were replaced with tempered glass. Also in front of the couch is a custom epoxy-coated teak table on a hi/low base. The 32" TV faces the couch and can be rotated to face the helm area for viewing there as well. Deck Equipment All exterior gunwales, bow as well as upper and lower cockpits and swim platform have Flexiteek installed. It looks just like new teak without the upkeep and maintenance teak requires. A clever design to hide the cable and water hose includes two hatches on the cockpit floor which contain them for no tripping or unsightly cables in the cockpit. The Meridian name boards were originally plastic which during buffing were susceptible to damage and were replaced with highly polished solid stainless-steel. Anchor The anchor is the highly regarded Ultra Anchor with its optional swivel, so the anchor always comes up in the proper position. This famed Turkish stainless steel anchor's design holds ground better than any other anchor in it’s class. The first 5 feet of chain is polished stainless steel, so it looks great being visible up at the windless. The plastic anchor control covers on the bow have been replaced with polished stainless-steel covers. Additional Equipment​ Entertainment Equipment This vessel has a stereo system designed by a high-fidelity expert. It has a Fusion large screen LCD head unit at the helm and two remote LCD panels on the upper cockpit and one at the lower cockpit for full control. The Fusion remote units are on the NEMA network, so they can display any NEMA data, such as wind speed and direction. It has JL audio speakers through the exterior of the boat with two 12" subwoofers. Amplifiers power each of the speakers with clean power. Galley The Galley has a large Kenyon cooktop as well as a large refrigerator, freezer, and microwave. The galley also has plenty of counter space for enjoyable onboard cooking. Mechanical Equipment​ Engine Room All lighting in the engine room is LED. All maintenance is up to date, including the cleaning of the after coolers (port side aftercooler is new) and heat exchangers. Sherwood water pumps have been upgraded to the more dependable SMX pumps with easy-to-change impellers (not using splines or key way) but a special tool to make removal and insertion easy. The boat has a Reverso electric oil changer system. All seacocks have Groco valves which allow for pull-out plugs for easy winterization. The original float design for waste tank monitoring has been replaced by an ultrasonic device for accurate readings without the usual issues a float presents. Waste level are displayed on digital monitor. Air Conditioning All four A/C units have been replaced recently with new Cruisair units. These units have plastic pans which do not corrode or leave rust stains down the side of the boat on raw water outlets. The A/C pump is oversized and new as of 2020. Electrical Equipment Generator: Onan 9 kW Model 9MDKAV-2743 The interior electrical panel like the rest of the vessel has been fully upgraded with numerous LCD panels for all conditions of the boat and battery charging systems. Since some of the displays are on the NEMA network even all weather information including wind speed and direction can be shown as well as any other NEMA data. Underwater lighting i state-of-the-art. All lights are Lumishore with infinite color-changing capabilities. There are four large lights on the stern and two lights one on the port and one on the starboard side. A computer mainframe controls all the lighting with a DMX controller like those used at rock concerts for multiple effects. An LCD Lumishore light control panel is on the platform extension. Control can also be done with an iPad using custom software. The Custom stainless vessel name "Prime Time" also lights up and is interfaced with the DMX system and can be synced to follow the colors of the underwater lights as well as many other lighting modes. If the name of the boat changes, the existing wiring can be used for new vessel name. Even the horns have been upgraded to Khalenberg air horns loud enough to get the attention of any size vessel. Security systems The vessel has an alarm system with all exterior doors as well as a contact that sets off the alarm if the canvas cover for the helm electronics panel is removed. There are 4 blinking red LEDs at all entry points when the alarm is armed. A keyless wireless remote arms/disarms. Also there are port and stbd forward facing cameras and two aft facing cameras which record to a DVR. These cameras can also be displayed on chartplotter or helm TV for assistance when docking The Vessel has a new 2021 ACR full-size EPIRB. Salon The salon has two opposing couches with the port side couch having 3 pull-out footrests. Storage is under the starboard couch. All woodwork throughout the boat is cherry and in outstanding condition. All carpeting in the boat is excellent and stain-free. The salon has a 32" 4K HDTV with a Yamaha receiver and Dish Network equipment hidden in a cabinet. Four speakers are in the salon, with two subwoofers under the couch for surround sound. There is also a CD changer with AM/FM radio under the TV. Stairs leading to the galley and bow stateroom lift up where the washer/Dryer and central vac system is located. Accommodations​ Owner Stateroom: The owner's stateroom is a few steps down from the salon back aft. The stateroom provides ample hanging closet space, a large bed with easy access on both sides, a large window for plenty of light into the aft cockpit, a large head, and a separate shower space. VIP Stateroom: Forward of the galley is the VIP Stateroom with ensuite head, sink, and a separate enclosed stall shower. There is a separate door leading to the head from the salon for “day head” access. The aft-facing sleeping area has easy accessibility from port or starboard and plenty of storage lockers/closets. Helm Area: Above the salon is the helm area and lounge. Visibility is excellent and incorporates plenty of seating, a fridge, and a large flat screen TV on a movable hinge. The flat screen TV can be rotated to face either the helm or the upper cockpit. For ease of maneuvering, the TV, when facing the helm, can display port and starboard views of the sides of the vessel at the same time on a split screen. In the cockpit are port and starboard molded boarding steps that also act as storage for lines and fenders.  Access to the lazarette, Onan generator in a sound shield, batteries and stern thruster are through the cockpit sole.   You can also slide the patio style doors open and walk into the aft master stateroom from the cockpit. You walk up some molded step to the aft deck. The aft deck is covered with a fiberglass hardtop, you will see that there is an aft seat with a table, wing door son either side of the aft deck there is also a wet bar with an ice maker, sink and storage. At the upper bridge is an L-shape seat on the starboard side and on the opposite side of the bridge is a Norcold fridge with a jump seat in front of it . The Captain seat is a bucket style seat. At the helm is a tilt wheel, clean controls and throttles, the wood veneer dash is in good condition and so are the rocker switches and gauges. For electronics we have a Northstar 6000I a Northstar pilot and a Raymarine depth and a Horizon VHF and Danforth compass. The 459 also has the docking on command. This area is covered with a canvas top and all the eisenglass is in good condition.  She has a good walk around, there are sun pads for the bow area.  At the bow is a Lewmar windlass, foot controls and bow light. MASTER STATEROOMMater Stateroom has the sliding patio doors so you can step in and out of the cockpit into the stateroom.  The room has decent storage, with cupboards and pull out drawers. The head and the shower are split with a vanity and sink in the middle both the shower and the head have solid privacy doors.  The owners stateroom also has a solid door. The room has speakers, cabin lights, A/C panel and carpet through out. SALONThe salon is roomy and bright thanks to the large windows. The Cherry veneer finish looks good and the carpet look good. On the port side in the salon is a triple wide sofa, two of the seats convert into a bed and the other is a Lazyboy.  The electrical panel is on the aft bulkhead next to the TV and Samsung DVD. There are two salon air conditioning panels and on the starboard side in the salon is another small sofa with storage under it and a salon table. GALLEY AND DAY HEADThe galley has a wooden Teak and Holy veneer sole with storage under it.  In the galley is a sink a three burner cooktop an oven along with a Norcold fridge freezer and a Tappan convection oven. The two steps that lead down to the galley can be lifted and you then have access to the Splendide washer dryer combo. For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.

Rosatom obtained a license for the first land-based SMR in Russia

Rosatom Starts Production of Rare-Earth Magnets for Wind Power Generation

TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom has started gradual localization of rare-earth magnets manufacturing for wind power plants generators. The first sets of magnets have been manufactured and shipped to the customer.

In total, the contract between Elemash Magnit LLC (an enterprise of TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom in Elektrostal, Moscow region) and Red Wind B.V. (a joint venture of NovaWind JSC and the Dutch company Lagerwey) foresees manufacturing and supply over 200 sets of magnets. One set is designed to produce one power generator.

“The project includes gradual localization of magnets manufacturing in Russia, decreasing dependence on imports. We consider production of magnets as a promising sector for TVEL’s metallurgical business development. In this regard, our company does have the relevant research and technological expertise for creation of Russia’s first large-scale full cycle production of permanent rare-earth magnets,” commented Natalia Nikipelova, President of TVEL JSC.
